It's been a whirlwind of challenges and change for Presbyterian over the last two years. As we come out of the pandemic, our providers, staff, patients and members are getting ready for their comeback. That means ensuring that family and friends get vaccinated. It means fulfilling our commitment to help youth, families, colleagues and caregivers continue to heal, recover and focus on wellness after this long pandemic.

ONWARD AND UPWARD A joint message from Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation Despite the cloud of the pandemic, a silver lining of accomplishments is shining through as we look back on 2021.

Thanks to the support of our donors, who stepped up and helped us find new ways to fulfill our purpose in the past year, we continued to make strides in our commitment to elevating patient care.

Some of our bigger projects, including construction of the Presbyterian Robert Wertheim Hospice House and the Presbyterian Rehabilitation Services Duane and Barbara Trythall Aquatic Therapy Natatorium, are finished or nearing completion. The new Presbyterian Breast Care location at Rust Medical Center opened last summer and expansion of the Presbyterian Neuroscience program is underway.

A major gift from Julie Bowdich and her husband John Carey established Presbyterian’s first endowed chair, supporting Presbyterian’s growing Neuroscience program and helping to accelerate the impact of this high-priority program. We are grateful to our early donors like Duffy and Jean Ann Swan who have helped get this initiative off the ground.

Endowment Ensures Education for Neonatal Nurses

of Gratitude Kusum Prabhakar, MD, first arrived in Baltimore on a dark, cold, snowy winter day in 1970. Fresh out of medical school in India, she had come to the United States to complete her obstetrics and gynecology residency.

But as she began to think about having a family, Dr. Prabhakar worried that the demands of working in an OBGYN practice and having children of her own might be difficult to balance.

She switched her specialty to anesthesiology and completed her residency at Yale University in 1977.

That career change proved to be a wise decision. After completing her residency, Dr. Prabhakar took a position at Presbyterian Hospital as a dual-trained anesthesiologist in both anesthesiology and OB-GYN in New Mexico. She remained actively involved with the New Mexico Society of Anesthesiologists for the next 30 years, and served as a delegate to the American Society of Anesthesiology. Dr. Prabhakar recently retired after four decades of service as a practicing physician.

GIVING BACK Combined with her medical background in obstetrics, Dr. Prabhakar’s personal experience with her daughters heightened her interest in neonatal nursing. In 1991, she established the PrabhakarRusso Neonatal Nursing Education Endowment, which provides a growing and continuing resource to ensure neonatal nursing staff at Presbyterian Hospital can expand their skills as needed.

The endowment also funds the purchase of educational materials and helps to cover costs associated with attending conferences.

In 1987, Dr. Prabhakar gave birth to twin daughters Sonia and Shawna, born 12 weeks premature. In addition to the neonatal nursing endowment, Dr. Prabhakar has a long history of annual contributions to Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation, with contributions supporting the Employee CareFund, as well as cancer, heart and hospice funds.

We are eternally grateful for donors like Dr. Prabhakar whose gifts help improve access to healthcare throughout New Mexico.

CARING FOR THE CO M M U N I T Y

Fund Encourages Socorroans to Help Each Other

Socorro means “help” in Spanish, and the Socorroans Helping Each Other fund created by the generosity of residents Kay and Paul Krehbiel offers just that. Socorro is a community in need: as of 2021, 25% of Socorro County’s 16,000 residents were living in poverty, a number that could continue to grow as a result of the pandemic.

That’s where the Krehbiels come in. Since moving to Socorro in 1966, Kay and Paul have raised their family and played active roles in the community. Kay is a retired teacher and librarian. Paul retired from his career as a physics professor at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) but continues to research lightning and thunderstorms.

When the pandemic started and businesses began to close, the Krehbiels generously supported several local families and persons in need. With so many people coming to them for help, their son Derek and his wife Darlene suggested that Kay and Paul consider supporting the community in a more structured way.

The Krehbiels met with Elizabeth Beers, Director of CommunityBased Programs at SGH, and came up with a solution.

Socorroans Helping Each Other Fund (SHEO) supports the hiring, salary and benefits of a part-time community outreach worker who serves under Community-Based Programs at SGH. The three-year position focuses on addressing the disparity of resources across Socorro County by connecting patients and other community members in need with existing community programs and resources, as well as providing direct assistance such as gift cards, food vouchers and other necessities.

“Gaining access to resources is a daunting process, especially if you have limited English or limited education,” Elizabeth says.

“Having that person who genuinely cares, helps you navigate the system, and gets you plugged into resources is key. We’re not giving handouts, we’re giving hand ups, with the ultimate goal of moving people to independence so they can access their own resources.”

Presbyterian is currently looking to fill the outreach coordinator position, which will focus

on finding and working with individual clients who can benefit from the resources available, including housing approval, medical insurance, financial planning and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

Community outreach is also a priority.

SEEKING ADDITIONAL DONORS SHEO funds will also be leveraged to encourage additional donations and challenge grants. “The whole idea is that the fund will grow as others contribute. It could be a self-supporting program when people see the need, and there will always be people in need,” Kay says.

While the Krehbiels support many charities, their connection to Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation is SGH. “We think it’s a real benefit for our local hospital to be part of Presbyterian. Their presence here is a great statement of their faith in our community. We find it very heartwarming that Socorro is important to them,” Paul says.

“If you just look at pure data, Socorro is impoverished, but we are very wealthy when it comes to having people like the Krehbiels, who are committed to making a difference in the community. That’s the blessing of Socorro is that people who genuinely care are actively supporting our community.”

He also worked in the worldwide telecommunications community and served two different periods as director of development and president of the University of New Mexico Foundation. Throughout his professional life, Duffy has

always felt an obligation to help strengthen the community. His involvement in Albuquerque Economic Forum with former Presbyterian CEO Jim Hinton gave him deeper exposure to Presbyterian and its role in strengthening the community.

In making their gift to PHF late last year, the Swans wanted to make sure their contribution would help facilitate Albuquerque’s role as a hub for expanded access to specialized healthcare.

An avid exerciser, Duffy first gained appreciation for the importance and intricacies of neurology when he required surgery for lower back pain while living in Denver in the mid-80s.

PUTTING CHILDREN FIRST

Leaving a Legacy

In 2021, Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation (PHF) lost a friend and supporter whose life and generosity have been an integral part of Presbyterian’s history. Mary Helen Allburt (1920-2021) passed away in February at the age of 100. Throughout her life, she gave more than 36 gifts to PHF, reflecting her gratitude for the care she received as a pediatric patient. By designating the Foundation and the Child Life Program in her will, Mary Helen established a generous legacy gift that benefits future pediatric patients and their families.

Mary Helen was just nine years old when she was diagnosed with tuberculosis. She and her mother traveled from their home in Indiana to New Mexico to seek care at the Southwestern Presbyterian Sanatorium. “The San” was unprepared to meet the needs of children and didn’t accept anyone under 18, but when she and her mother showed up at the front door in 1931, Marion K. Van Devanter (“Mrs. Van”) made sure she was admitted. Mary Helen not only survived, but

also became a longtime friend of the organization, leaving behind an archive of letters she exchanged with members of the Foundation staff.

Vicki Macaulay, former longtime PHF staff member, developed a close relationship with Mary Helen. “She was always most focused on supporting the children in our hospitals because of her personal experience,” Vicki says. “I sensed that she wanted to ease their experience through disease and injury. She was a cheerful, generous donor and an inspiration to me and many others.”
