Even before COVID-19, the state of our mental health as a nation was on the decline, especially among young people. According to Mental Health America’s 2021 report, the proportion of youth between 11 and 17 who sought mental health screenings in 2020 was 9% higher than the 2019 average. Combine that with the fact that New Mexico’s 2018 suicide rate ranks No. 1 in the nation1 and access to behavioral health services is extremely limited, and you’ve got an epidemic on your hands. 1
