ABOUT PHOENIX FLIES Atlanta’s historic built environment of buildings, landscapes and neighborhoods is an integral part of the city’s culture and economy. Phoenix Flies: A Celebration of Atlanta’s Historic Sites provides an opportunity to learn about, celebrate and strengthen Atlanta’s historic and cultural assets. The celebration was created in 2003 by the Atlanta Preservation Center as a way to celebrate the anniversary of the dramatic rescue of the Fox Theatre, an event that changed Atlanta’s preservation perspective forever. Phoenix Flies 2024 is the 21st year that the APC has brought together organizations and individuals from around the community to demonstrate the value of Atlanta’s historic built environment. The celebration has grown from 16 preservation partners and 40 events to an average of 100 partners offering over 200 events each year.

Welcome to Phoenix Flies 2024 Louis Henry Sullivan said, “Architecture is the mother of the arts.” He affirms the established role architecture serves in influencing all artistic expressions. This clarifies that architecture serves as the foundation upon which multiple other art forms are built. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution published an editorial on January 10, 2001 to support the demolition of the Glenn Hotel. It opined that, “the choice between the city’s history and its future is seldom an easy call. Beginning the process of enlivening Marietta Street and doing it in a big way promises to benefit the community more than trying to rescue the architecturally insignificant and economically problematic Glenn Building.” Yet, the National Register of Historic Places / Statement of Significance for the Glenn Building clearly states, “The Glenn Building is significant in the area of architecture because it is an excellent example of the Neoclassical Revival style in Atlanta in the first decades of the 20th century. The Glenn Building is especially important because its ornate exterior elevations remain virtually unaltered and because it is among the few tall office buildings from the early to mid-20th century that survive in downtown Atlanta.” After a major redevelopment and renovation, the Glenn Building became the Glenn Hotel, the first boutique hotel in Downtown Atlanta. Last year the Glenn Hotel celebrated 100 years serving Atlanta, and is a fixed anchor of our Downtown. Without Historic Preservation, and the courage of those who defend it, we would have lost this amazing building and now have a 20-year-old, empty, high-rise office building. The Atlanta Preservation Center has been fortunate to be a part of many projects in recent years, and to grow relationships across varied opinions and platforms. Atlanta’s architectural and cultural significance represents our shared past. It informs our future generations of the stories that strengthened the diverse communities and people that provided leadership and support to this city. It can only continue doing so if what remains is preserved and their integrity maintained. Historic Preservation is the paramount way to ensure we do this with everyone and arguably for everyone. Phoenix Flies is the example of how we can — and have — used our better judgment and common interest to make sure that we are fair and honest in memory. We will be just moving forward to include those that were marginalized because their spaces were not extended equal and visible standing out of fear - or the losses incurred by short-term transactions. In summary, THANK YOU! Thank you to our partners, our friends, our contributors, those that we represent and those who have ensured that we are still here. Thank you especially to everyone who participates in Phoenix Flies. Most of all, THANK YOU, Atlanta, for giving us something so special and for being our home. We would have no other. David Y. Mitchell Executive Director, Atlanta Preservation Center

About Atlanta Atlanta was sited in 1837 to serve as a railroad transportation hub and, therefore, was assured to be a place of growth and expansion. At the end of the Civil War in 1865, over half of the city had been burned and its infrastructure destroyed. Nonetheless, in 1868, it became the Georgia state capital and by the end of Reconstruction in 1877 was physically much larger than its pre-war boundaries. The city now features well over 150 years of buildings, neighborhoods and landscapes which are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places—all worthy of preservation and celebration. Look for the National Register (NR) designation beneath the event listing description.

ATLANTA PRESERVATION CENTER

About the Cover One of the most architecturally outstanding buildings of the business district of Auburn Avenue is the Odd Fellows Building Tower. At the time of construction in 1912, many shops were located in the building. This six-story brick building preserves a real sense of pride with the terre-cotta figureheads on the building. These figures are located on opposite sides of the entrance and are clearly visible to the passerby or visitor. The recessed entrance portico has an arch above it. The first level of the building is fashioned of stone while the upper levels are brick. It is currently being preserved for future generations and for Georgia Works housing program for chronically homeless men to find hope and solace.

Into the Stacks Saturday, March 2 at 3pm

Preserving a City Block Monday, March 4 at 11 am

While Kenan Research Center is free and open to the public by appointment, our storage areas (stacks) are not often seen by the public. This tour will go into the stacks where we will talk about what, why, and how we collect, as well as the measures of preventive conservation that we take to ensure that the materials in our stewardship are around for generations to come. We’ll also see some staff favorites, as we talk about the conservation, preservation, and digitization of archival materials, and how to adapt what we do to your own archival treasures at home.

Atlanta History Center Midtown occupies nearly the entire block bordered by 10th Street and Peachtree Street on the northeast corner and Crescent Avenue and Peachtree Place on the southwest corner. In the 1920’s, this block was part of the vibrant Atlanta shopping scene. Over time, it has housed people, retail, and restaurants. Tour this block and the historic buildings that remain there, the Crescent Apartments and Commercial Row, to learn about their preservation stories and how the block will continue to impact Midtown for years to come. Atlanta History Center Midtown is also the site of Margaret Mitchell House, where Margaret Mitchell wrote most of Gone With the Wind.

The first building was built in 1896, and subsequent buildings in the next decade, but the complex was only used as a prison for 30 years. Built by the prisoners, the buildings feature unique concrete and stone construction. In 2020, all three buildings (the Stockade, the Stables, and the Forge) were fully renovated in a partnership of Urban Realty Partners/Tecton, with tenants ranging from an event space to creative tech offices. Come along to learn about the layers of the building’s history and materials, and the challenges of the renovation, with neighbor and architect Sarah Butler of Praxis3 Architecture. Tour is about 1.5 hours. Street parking is available. Registration required. For more information and to register, go to preserveatl.eventbrite.com. MISSION STATEMENT: Praxis3 is an architecture and multidisciplinary design firm founded in

1997. Our goal is to foster design excellence and create exceptional places for our clients and end users. The places we design often represent one of the largest investments our clients will ever make. Those places should enhance our client’s enterprise, no matter what it is. Good design means more than just listening to our clients. It means actively engaging in an ongoing dialogue seeking design solutions to support our client’s needs.

2024 PHOENIX FLIES

IN DEPTH

The Odd Fellows Building This prominent building on Auburn Avenue which once housed the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows will now be the home of Georgia Works, a nonprofit dedicated to helping homeless men find self-sufficiency. The Odd Fellows building was the idea of Benjamin J. Davis (1870-1945), the editor of the black owned newspaper, The Atlanta Independent. Davis used this newspaper to promote the construction of the building and so is credited with its successful completion. The building itself was designed by Atlanta architect William A. Edwards (1866-1939) and built by Robert A. Pharrow (1890-1930), owner of a prominent African American contracting firm. This is especially notable as a rare example of Jim Crow-era solidarity: the pair worked closely together despite the fact that Edwards was White and Pharrow was Black. Construction lasted from 1912 to 1913, when it was dedicated by Booker T. Washington. The building housed the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, a fraternal organization with primarily AfricanAmerican members. It held not only offices for the order, but lodge rooms and African-American owned businesses. Because of this significance in the areas of commerce, architecture, and social history, it was individually listed by the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, just prior to the Sweet Auburn National Historic Landmark (NHL) designation.

Unique Architecture

The brick and terracotta building comprises the entire northern side of Auburn Avenue between Jesse Hill Jr. Drive and Bell Street. The building has a two-story

classes, and other life skill courses. Their rehabilitation of the Odd Fellows building is a shining example of adaptive reuse. Sweet Auburn is synonymous with Black entrepreneurialism and urban prosperity; the Odd Fellows building was a community anchor, visually and symbolically, as well as a generative neighbor. This beacon needs to be celebrated as a milestone to Black achievement in the era of racial segregation, taking its place as one of the most significant structures in American architectural and urban history.

Welborn Victor Jenkins, an Atlantabased AfricanAmerican poet active between 1900 and 1950, Jenkins styled himself as a public poet in Walt Whitman’s image, a visionary who spoke both to and for America with prophetic urgency. His work joins other African-American appropriations of Whitman that simultaneously reference Whitman as a validating forefather and critically revise his legacy as the definitively “American” voice. For Jenkins, this act of self-assertion both prepares a rhetorical space for his vatic long poems and becomes a vital part of their jeremiadic argument: in appealing to an envisioned ideal of American democracy — its promise of life, liberty, and self-determination — he derives prophetic authority to protest America’s denial of that promise to African-Americans. Jenkins published an ode to the Odd Fellows Building in Davis’s weekly African American newspaper, The Atlanta Independent, in 1914:

At length this dream of strength and beauty stood. An answer, argument, and challenge bold. A landmark and milestone for the race, To which posterity shall point with pride.

Little 5 Points: A History of Atlanta’s Original, Off-Beat Community Wednesday, March 6 at 4pm Self-Guided Tour Saturday, March 2 to Saturday, March 23 www.l5pbiz.com INFORMATION

Little 5 Points (L5P) was one of the first commercial districts outside of downtown Atlanta. Built in 1908, L5P grew into an avant-grade arts and shopping district. By 1930, L5P’s successful businesses included three movie theaters, three grocery stores, four drug stores, and three barber shops. In the 1960’s L5P was struggling economically. In the 1970’s, the City of Atlanta awarded community grants to L5P which were used for public improvements. These improvements triggered the start of eclectic businesses that are still around today such as 7Stages, Variety Playhouse, Sevananda Natural Foods, Bond Credit Union, WRFG Community Radio station, and many more. These grants and the entrepreneurial spirit of these community-based businesses helped spur the revitalization of L5P. On our tour we will explore the unique businesses, characters and architecture that made L5P the colorful, free-spirited community that it is today. Registration required. Hale County, Alabama, and the Visual Rhetoric of Sharecropping Tuesday, March 19 at 5:30pm INFORMATION

Join us for a lecture by David A. Davis, author of Driven to the Field: Sharecropping and Southern Literature. As mechanical cotton pickers displaced manual laborers, sharecropping came to an end by the 1960s, but the end of sharecropping did not lead to social progress in the rural South. Millions of southerners migrated into cities, and rural areas were left to decline. Over the past century, Hale County, Alabama, has attracted documentarians and visual artists who have recorded the end of sharecropping and the county’s socioeconomic decline. Walker Evans and James Agee based Let Us Now Praise Famous Men on sharecroppers in Hale County, and Dale Maharidge and Michael Williamson documented the sharecroppers’ descendants in And Their Children After Them. William Christenberry, inspired by Walker Evans, photographed the county over a period of decades, and RaMell Ross filmed Hale County This Morning, This Evening there. These documentaries project an aesthetic of poverty that depicts the visual decline of the landscape and people of the rural South. Registration required. Plus Ultra - Further Beyond: Innovation, Discovery, and Change in the Early Modern Period Saturday, March 16 at 11am INFORMATION

Join us for a tour of Pitts Theology Library. Plus Ultra — literally, “further beyond”— was the motto chosen by Charles V (1500-1558). It is a direct allusion to the phrase Non Plus Ultra (“nothing further beyond”) allegedly inscribed on the Pillars of Hercules (the classical name for the Strait of Gilbraltar) and used on some medieval maps to indicate that there was no land to the West of the Mediterranean Sea. The explorations of Christopher Columbus negated this claim, and the literary discoveries of the Renaissance denied the broader implication that it was unsafe to stray beyond the confines of what is traditionally known and accepted. Plus Ultra exemplifies the spirit of the Early Modern Period, a spirit that prompted discoveries and often rapid developments and changes in science, art, politics, and religion and other facets of life and civilization. Registration required. For more information and to register, go to preserveatl.eventbrite.com. MISSION STATEMENT: The mission of the Pitts Theology Library is to acquire, organize,

Originally built in 1904 by Pratt Engineering, this location was used for the production of fertilizer bombs during WWI. Later it was used to develop and patent liquid carbonated gases, which was then purchased by the Coca-Cola company while it was still a startup. The Pullman company purchased the property in 1926, expanded it and gave it its iconic name. Pullam was renowned for luxurious rail travel across the country and used the site to repair passenger and cargo cars. The Pullman company was also one of the largest employers of African-American men during segregation. As travel by rails died down, the site was abandoned, becoming a popular destination not only among local street artists, but as a filming location. This has ushered in a new era for the site with film and television productions such as “Hunger Games”, “Fast and Furious”, “Baby Driver” and “Bad Boys 3”. Join us for an exhibit tour! This exhibition by the Stuart A. Walker also responded to O’Connor’s work through an essay, “Beyond the Peacock,” and a short story, “Convergence.” Using rare archival photos, journals, letters, original manuscripts and artwork, and personal artifacts, “At the Crossroads” examines how Andrews, O’Connor and Walker overlap geographically, chronologically, and creatively through their work. The stained glass in St. Luke’s Church was designed and fabricated over a period of nearly 60 years by some of the world’s leading firms, including the Franz Mayer Studios of Munich, Germany; Heaton, Butler & Bayne of London, England; and the Willet Stained Glass Studios of Philadelphia. The large windows portray the Life of Christ from Birth to Ascension, with a corresponding story taken from the Old Testament in the smaller aisle windows. Through the years, thousands of visitors have been inspired by the beauty of these windows. We would be pleased to share with your group the stories portrayed in this Gospel of Glass. MISSION STATEMENT: St. Luke’s story is

one of vision, rebirth, and service. The church was founded in the 19th century as a refuge for those fleeing war. Today, the “little refugee church” remains in downtown Atlanta even as other churches headed for the suburbs. These two “births” are vital to the DNA of the community that continues to worship and serve to this day.

Whittier Mills @whittiermillvillage INFORMATION

Whittier Mill Village is a Historic District in the City of Atlanta. Nestled along the Chattahoochee River, the former cotton mill site is now a 17-acre city park. The surrounding mill village is a lovely Atlanta neighborhood of restored homes and cottages with a few newer homes built to Historical Architectural Guidelines. The village and Whittier Mill Park’s history go hand-in-hand, dating back to 1895 when the Atlanta neighborhood sprang up to house Whittier Textile Mill workers after the Lowell, MA-based Whittier Cotton Mills expanded to the South. Workers could rent the neighborhood’s homes for about $1 per week. When the mill expanded in 1925, more homes were built. Today, the park is a testament to that community resolve and offers area residents and their families a remarkably pastoral green space in the middle of Atlanta’s hustling city. Though Whittier Mill Park is a city park — dedicated as such in 2003, much of the maintenance and ongoing restoration of the original mill structures is assumed by the Atlanta neighbors and northwest Atlanta local residents.

Homeowners Erik Lavalle and Tom Klein 178 15th Street, Atlanta, GA 30309 INFORMATION

178 15th Street sits on the first lot sold in the new Ansley Park development. Constructed from 1906 to 1907, the home was built by William Oliver Jones, who owned the livery in what is now Underground Atlanta and served as police commissioner. Designed by Bruce & Everett, the Italian Renaissance Revival design echoes many of Bruce’s other renowned designs, including Tech Tower, Emory at Oxford and Agnes Scott, the entrance to Oakland Cemetery, and numerous buildings throughout the southeast. This is the only known surviving private home by Bruce. There were two major fires in the house, after which the house was considered a total loss. However, Jones chose to rebuild the home, which debuted in January 1912. In 1919, they sold to J.P. Allen, and in the 1950s, the house was divided into 4 apartments. In December 1961, the house was purchased by Patricia Nolan, who reduced the apartments to two and lived there until Fall 2018. The current owners completed a renovation in 2021, readying the house for the next hundred years.
