Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year!

It’s hard to believe, but the first day of school is just weeks away. This newsletter will help you and your daughter get ready for the year. Please read everything in this packet closely. You will have everything you need to be informed, prepared and ready to go in August.

Also, please watch your inbox this month for an important email containing back-to-school forms that will be due Monday, Aug. 3. We look forward to seeing you soon!

RETURN TO REGULAR HOURS Wednesday, Aug. 5 Presentation will resume regular hours of 7 a.m.-4 p.m.

Please note that the school cannot be responsible for the safety or welfare of your daughters outside of these hours unless she is involved in an organized event such as athletics, dance or music. Please arrange carpools to accommodate these hours.

FROSH ORIENTATION Freshmen leave their books at home and wear free dress during this mandatory two-day orientation.

Tuesday, Aug. 11 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

(Check in begins at 8 a.m.)

Students will visit their classrooms, find their lockers and– most importantly–meet their classmates! They will also be introduced to counseling services and student activities.

Lunch is included.

As soon as students are dropped off in the morning, parents are invited to an informal, fun meet-and-greet in the library at 8:30 a.m., hosted by the Presentation Lantern League. Enjoy coffee and pastries as you get to know other incoming parents!

Students will learn about Campus Ministry, Community Involvement and Homeroom. Students should bring a lunch or plan to purchase one at school.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL Thursday, Aug. 13 Students should bring their schedules, iPads and books and report to their mentoring class by 7:40 a.m.

OPENING LITURGY Thursday, Aug. 13 The Opening Liturgy will begin at 11:05. Students must wear their formal uniforms. If you have not yet purchased the uniform, you may do so at The Merry Mart online store by going to www.presentationhs.org. Click on the Panther’s Den button on the bottom right and then click PresWear.

STUDENT ID PHOTOS Monday, Aug. 17 Tuesday, Aug. 18 ID photos will be taken during English class. Students must wear their white Presentation High School polo shirts.

INCOMING PARENT MEETING Wednesday, August 19, 6 p.m.

All parents of new students must attend an orientation meeting in the Marian Stuckey Center. We will finish around 8:30 p.m. Appetizers and beverages will be provided.

Updated and New Attendance Policies Each year, school policies are updated and revised. All school policies and procedures are contained in the Student-Parent Handbook, which will be distributed to students during the first several days of school. Below are some policy highlights that parents and students need to be aware of.

ATTENDANCE POLICY Class attendance is an essential part of the educational process at Presentation High School. A student who is absent from class misses a significant portion of academic discussion and personal interaction with other students and the teacher that cannot be replicated. Every effort should be made to schedule medical, dental and other appointments after school to avoid missing class.

However, if a student is ill, she should stay home to rest and recover. Students can miss up to five classes per course each semester without penalty. If a student misses between six to eight class periods in any one class, she will need to earn back a unit of credit by completing a make-up unit. A make-up unit is an independent unit of study equivalent to the number of class hours missed. The make-up unit fee is $100.00 per class. At nine absences in a class, the student will lose all units of credit.

If a student’s absence is due to a chronic, ongoing illness, a doctor’s note specifying the illness is required to be given to the Absentee Counselor. Please do not submit a doctor's notes for colds and flus as these are not considered chronic illnesses.

ACADEMICS & PARTICIPATION IN SCHOOL-SPONSORED ACTIVITIES Participation in school-sponsored activities, travel and service opportunities at Presentation High School is a privilege. To be eligible for participation, a student must be in good academic standing, free of major disciplinary infractions, and be medically and emotionally healthy. If there are concerns in any of these areas–at the discretion of the Administration and in consultation with the Dean of Students, Academic Dean and/or the Counseling Department Chair–a student may not be allowed to participate in an activity or travel.

A student must have at least a 2.0 GPA (during the semester prior) to participate in any interscholastic sport, forensics, theater or robotics. If a student is below a 2.0 GPA, she may request a meeting with the Vice Principal of Academics in order to receive a probationary status for a limited time.

A student must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA to participate in any school-sponsored trip or travel (including summer travel). Failure to achieve passing grades in classes or turn in major projects and critical research papers will result in removal from the trip. Any costs associated with the trip and its cancellation are the sole responsibility of the student’s parents or guardians. Presentation High School will not be held responsible for any non-refundable costs.

Second semester seniors who are in jeopardy of not graduating, have D’s or F’s in graduation requirements, and/ or fail to turn in a critical research paper, will not be allowed to attend the Prom and/or Senior Lock-in.

Uniform Policy The Pres Skirt Uniform skirts must be worn appropriately at all times. This includes length and size of skirt. Skirts must be large enough to be fully zipped and fastened at the waist. They may be no shorter than four inches above the middle of the kneecap or knee joint fold line. Skirts must be properly hemmed, cleaned and pressed. If your daughter is in need of a new skirt, please purchase one this summer.

Hair Color & Style If students experimented with hair color this summer, please be aware Presentation has a policy about acceptable hair color and style. No extreme hair color, tipping or color blocking is permitted. If the color is not a natural color it needs to be corrected before school begins Thursday, Aug. 13. Additionally, no extreme haircuts, such as shaving one side of the head, is allowed. Thank you for your support of this policy.

Parent Volunteer Policy Parents must be fingerprinted to serve in most on-campus volunteer roles. The Verify Group will be on campus the following dates to fingerprint parents: • Wednesday, August 19 (before Incoming Parent Night) from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Reception Room.

• Wednesday, August 26 (before Back to School Night) from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Reception Room.

The cost is $67 and can be paid by cash, check or credit.

Unfortunately, fingerprinting is non-transferable between schools, so all parents must be fingerprinted at Presentation even if they have already been fingerprinted by their elementary or middle schools. But, parents only need to be fingerprinted once during their four years at Presentation.

Parking and Car Information

PARKING DO’S FOR PARENTS

Car Registration Students who drive to school must register all cars they may drive, regardless of where they park. The registration form will be included in an email you’ll get this month from Presentation High School. School-issued parking stickers must be displayed on the back window of any car they drive to school.

• Register all vehicles students drive to school.

Driver Courtesy Please be sensitive to our neighbors and other drivers. You should allow an additional 10 minutes for dropping off a student in the morning. Please pay attention to Presentation staff members who direct the flow of traffic in the mornings and afternoons.

• Be courteous to our neighbors at all times.

• Move your car if requested to do so.

• Report any collisions or damaged vehicles to the main office. If you cannot locate the owner of the other vehicle, leave a note with your name, phone and insurance information.

• Practice safe, slow and courteous driving at all times.

PARKING DON’TS FOR PARENTS

Parking Information Students must check the parking lot for open spaces before parking in the neighborhood. If a student must park on the street, they are expected to be courteous to our neighbors by parking legally. Failure to obey parking laws will result in a minimum of a one-hour detention and possibly having their car towed at their expense.

• Don’t block driveways.

Summer Reading

• Don’t pull into numbered faculty parking spaces, even for a few minutes.

Parents of juniors and seniors are encouraged to read one of the summer reading books that is assigned for your daughters. Frank Bruni’s Where You Go is Not Who You'll Be, is an excellent read that puts college admissions into perspective.

We hope all parents will take the time to read the book and in August share their thoughts and comments on our new parent book blog. Stay tuned for more details next month!

Campus Ministry Retreats Mark your family calendars for your daughter’s class level retreat! All students are welcome to attend these fantastic, faith-filled, free and fun experiences sponsored by Campus Ministry. During retreat, students participate in group discussions and enjoy community-building activities, with plenty of free time to reflect and relax. All retreats are open to–and enriched by–students of all faith traditions.

There, you will find a link to a form that you can download and print. Please mail the form to Presentation High School, attention: Claire Foley.

Food Service by The Pasta Market Here is some information about The Pasta Market’s hot lunch program at Presentation High School.

At the beginning of the school year, parents will be asked to pre-pay a certain dollar amount that will allow the student to buy meals and snacks. Each student will be issued her own Pre-Pay account. The amount you pay will depend on how many days you believe your child will participate throughout the period; suggested initial amounts are $150-$200. The menu is a la carte, which allows students to choose the menu items of their choice.

The Pasta Market does not accept checks or cash for PrePay accounts at school. Deposits must be paid using an online service. With this system, parents log on and make payments electronically. To set up an account, log on to www.thepastamarket.net, and the password is pres62.

The Pasta Market will still accept cash at the lunch counter, but note that Pre-Pay accounts do speed up the checkout process.

Parents will receive a monthly email statement with your daughter’s account balance. This will give you an opportunity to recharge the account. If your child spends more than her balance, she will be allowed to buy lunch only for that day. If the account continues to have a balance due, she will not be allowed to purchase meals.

Any outstanding balances from the 2014-15 school year must be paid before participation in this year’s program will be allowed.

Pasta Market has established a 24-hour message line (650949-3239) and an email address (hotlunch@pastamarket. com). Please feel free to contact them with concerns or comments. Thank you and Pasta Market looks forward to serving your daughter!

From the Athletic Department Thank you to all of our Panther supporters for a great school year! It’s been fun to reflect on the success of our teams this year. Our cross country runners and golfers represented us in CCS; our basketball team played in the CCS championship game–finishing as one of the top 8 teams in California; our swimmers qualified for the state meet; our triple jumper competed in CCS, and our pole vaulter qualified for state for the second year in a row. It’s been a very fun, successful and exciting year!

All of our students are invited to participate in our strength and conditioning program, which runs all summer long.

All workouts are led by our strength and conditioning coach, Shaun Eagen. The schedule is posted on the Athletic Department web page: www.presentationhs.org/athletics.

Fall sports tryouts for sophomores, juniors and seniors begin on August 14; for Freshman, tryouts begin on August 21.

All student-athletes planning to try out must complete the participation packet. You can download and print the packet by clicking on the tab on the right-hand side of the Athletics web page.

Don’t forget to save the date for the Athletic Fundraiser– Game of Throws 2.0! It will be held on Friday, Sept. 18 in the Miller Athletic Complex on campus. Mark your calendars; this will sure be a fun night!

Athletics Tryouts | Fall 2015 All students trying out for a school sport are required to turn in a participation packet prior to the start of each school year. Students will not be permitted to participate in any conditioning program, tryout, practice, scrimmage or game until the participation packet is complete and on file with the Athletic Department by Aug. 3, 2015. We hope you have found time to relax and enjoy a restful summer break. Here at Pres, we have been anticipating the new school year and the wonderful possibilities ahead!

The Office of Advancement strives to make sure your daughters get the best of everything, including the best coaches, clubs, teams and co-curricular activities. But, tuition only goes so far to cover these costs. As a result, we dream big and raise money for what many people call “the gap.” To us, this word has always seemed like a huge leap of faith because we rely on you, the parents of our current students, to fill it. It is our hope, and expectation, that all Presentation families contribute in some way to the Annual Fund this year.

Last year, we proved all things are possible with participation from the entire community. The Class of 2018 shone brightly as they led the Annual Fund as the class with the highest percentage of participation. This year, we are sure the classes of 2017, 2016 and 2019 won’t be left behind!

The Presentation campus has a great deal to offer, especially for parents. Please join our community and make your own memories. Volunteering is a great way to meet other parents while joining in a common goal–helping your daughter’s school. Because of you, we are a success.
