Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Volair Park for today’s match in the Evo-Stik League Division One North. The warmest of welcomes is extended to the players, officials and supporters of Kendal Town FC, as well as to the match officials.

Welcome, also, to our own players and supporters and any neutrals in the crowd for this afternoon’s fixture. A special greeting is extended to today’s mascots, MHS Juventus, our match sponsors who have dedicated it to the memory of David Rose and to our Matchball Sponsor, David Quinn. Thanks to all of our sponsors for their fantastic support of the club.

Today’s match is the first in a sequence of four in succession here at Volair Park which see both of the clubs presently occupying the relegation places visit Prescot. Our home form has been outstanding since the turn of the year, with our last four matches here all being won and 14 goals scored into the bargain. However, our guests this afternoon ran out 3-1 winners at the Pye Motors Stadium in November and will be tough opposition once again. With the backing of our fantastic support, our players can certainly approach the match with confidence and hope. Brian Richardson and the players will also have taken positives from the narrow defeat at promotion-chasing Farsley Celtic last Saturday. In addition to a spectacular goal by Dominc Marie, Cables enjoyed a strong end to the match and might have come away from Throstle Nest with a vital point. As the players seek to climb the League Table, such encouraging displays can only help the cause.

It is not only the First Team who are performing with great credit.

Last weekend, the Reserve Team reached the Final of the West Cheshire League’s Hawarth & Gallagher Bowl, thanks to a 1-0 win at Maghull Reserves. They will face the winners of the second semifinal, which is between Bootle Reserves and Heswall Reserves and takes place next Saturday. Congratulations to all of the squad on this achievement, which is made all the more remarkable by the youthful nature of the group, which featured nine former members of the club’s Under-18 side. Having such a promising group of players challenging the First Team can only be positive.

The present club was originally formed as Netherfield AFC in 1919 when employees at K Shoes Netherfield factory were encouraged to form a football team. They were provided with land near to the factory at Parkside and began to compete in local leagues. In 1925 the team achieved its first notable success winning the Westmorland County Cup. The Golden Era In 1945 the club joined the semi-professional ranks becoming a member of the Lancashire Combination League and for the first time in its history Netherfield AFC played against Football League opposition that year when nearly 10,000 people watched the two FA Cup ties against local rivals Barrow.

Netherfield AFC was soon established as a major non-league club by taking the Lancashire Combination Championship in 1949 and again qualifying to meet a football league side, Gateshead in the FA Cup. Cup success was quickly becoming a tradition as in the following year, 1950, after defeating North Shields at Parkside in the 1st round the team traveled to Watford where over 15,000 people watched Netherfield AFC take on Watford in the 2nd round. Unfortunately for the traveling fans the home side ran out 6-0 winners.

1952-53 again saw Netherfield in the 1st round of the FA Cup, this time against Gainsborough Trinity where a draw at Parkside was followed with a disappointing loss at Gainsborough. The clubs reputation was further enhanced when, in the 1954-55 FA Cup Wrexham were the 1st round visitors to Parkside Road and had to settle for a 3-3 draw. By the time Grimsby Town visited in 1956 it had been the 5th time in 8 years that Netherfield AFC had reached the first round stage of the FA Cup. Over 5,000 people packed Parkside Road to watch the Third Division leaders beat Netherfield 5-1, a record crowd and more than 500 more than the previous year’s tie against Wrexham.

The following year, 1956, Netherfield won the Combination Cup, a trophy they won again five years later in 1961.

In 1963 Parkside Road again saw 2nd round FA Cup action as Netherfield held Football League side Chesterfield to a draw.

The 1963-64 season saw Netherfield finish runners up to Chorley in the Lancashire Combination, striker Tom Brownlee scoring an incredible season total of 76 goals. In January of the following year Brownlee was sold to Bradford City, however Netherfield still managed to win the the Combination Championship Division 1 title that year. It was the first time they had won it since 1949 and as a bonus the reserve team won the Division 2 Championship in the same year.

New Challenges In 1968 the Club accepted the challenge of becoming a founder member of the Northern Premier League. However, the 1970’s were not kind to Netherfield as they languished around the bottom of the Northern Premier League for most of the decade.

In 1980 Netherfield and Bridlington Trinity set a record for cup tie replays that will likely never be broken, when they played each other seven times in the first round of the FA Trophy. After a total of thirteen and a half hours matchplay Netherfield won 2-0 to go through to the second round. However the cost to both clubs was dear, a total of £1,800 and it depleted the finances of Netherfield causing the Club to move down into the North West Counties League Division 1 in 1982.

In 1987 the Northern Premier League expanded into a new division, League Division 1 which provided a route back for the Club to play at a higher level as they joined the new Division and in 1998 the Club changed its name to Netherfield Kendal.

The New Millennium In 2000 with the demise of shoe making in the town, and with the Netherfield site now a shopping complex, K Village, the club decided to re brand itself as Kendal Town to reflect it’s relationship with the town. Although in recent years times have not been easy for Kendal Town there has been some success on the field, in 2003 they reached the final of the Marsden Cup and over 400 fans travelled to Accrington to watch them lose 2-0 to Conference side Leigh RMI. New state of the art floodlights began a slow process of gradual ground redevelopment in 2004 and 2,500 fans turned up to watch the lights switched on for a visiting Manchester United XI squad.

Tony Hesketh returned to the club for a second spell as Manager in 2004-05, steering them to fifth place in the league. In the ensuing play-off final the club travelled to AFC Telford as underdogs. Although Kendal could not overhaul the favourites they won much respect from the 4,250 Telford fans watching as they narrowly lost 2-1. Later that year the club entered into partnership with The Westmorland FA and Bolton Wanderers in an effort to improve youth football and coaching.

The club achieved Charter Standard status from the FA shortly afterwards and subsequently formed a new youth club in conjunction with local club Wattsfield FC and achieved full Community Charter Standard status in an effort to improve football for boys and girls in the area.

2005-06 was Kendal’s most successful season for 40 years as they achieved a promotion for the first time in their history to the Unibond League Premier Division. The run-in to the end of the season was a nail-biting one and Kendal missed automatic promotion on the last day of the season by a single goal difference. score the winning goal against Gresley Rovers to seal a famous promotion resulting in one of the biggest pitch invasions witnessed in Kendal!

The highpoint of the 2006-07 season was off the field, when a long-standing friend of Kendal Town, John Richardson persuaded Preston and England football legend Sir Tom Finney, to come to a home game.

After a fine start to the 2006-07 season in the Unibond League Premier Division, reality kicked in for Kendal Town. After a series of poor results, both in the league and in cup competitions,manager Tony Hesketh resigned and was replaced by club captain Lee Ashcroft.

The club hovered around the relegation zone for some time but managed to avoid relegation.

The highpoint of the season was when Preston and England legend Sir Tom Finney OBE was persuaded to become Club President: Sir Tom recounted he had as a teenager been turned down by Netherfield as a player by the club.

The 2007-08 season saw the club finish in mid table. The following two seasons were Town’s best in the Unibond League Premier Division where they secured two play-off places in a row losing in the semi-finals each time.

Longstanding Chairman David Willan was replaced by Haydon Munslow in 2010. Manager Lee Ashcroft left to join Northwich Victoria half way through the 2012-13 season taking many of the players with him. Steve Edmondson took over as Manager but despite winning many of the remaining games with a new hastily formed squad was unable to prevent the club being relegated.

In 2013, the club house which had been in private ownership was taken back by the club and renamed by supporters as Finney’s (after Sir Tom). In the same year Kendal Town Ladies was formed and a local Youth Development Centre established.

The 2013-14 season was one of consolidation in the Evo Stik League First Division North.

Former club striker David Foster replaced Steve Edmondson as Manager. The season opened with hopes of a play-off place, but after a series of indifferent results David Foster departed and his assistant Michael Stringfellow stepped up as replacement. He was able to produce a number of exciting home wins against highly rated clubs but couldn’t find a consistent run of results.

The 2014-15 season started well for Michael Stringfellow with good results. A troubled period then followed with an outside Lancashire based business consortium trying hard to take over the club. Internal friction amongst the club’s members was mirrored by increasingly poor results on the pitch. Chairman Haydon Munslow resigned and was replaced by George Gudgeon.Michael Stringfellow resigned and was replaced by a new coaching team led by Gary Fawcett and returning David Foster. The consortium withdrew. Results started to again improve,leading to a mid-table finish.

WILL KITCHEN - Goalkeeper, D.O.B - 31/1/1991 Will is enjoying his second season with Kendal Town. Some outstanding performances saw him take over the number one jersey last season. Will is more than six feet tall and a product of the Morecambe FC Academy.

MIKE ASPEN, D.O.B - 20/10/1989 Mike has joined the Mintcakes having previously played for FC Halifax Town and Farsley Celtic.

DAN TOWERS - Defender, D.O.B - 29/12/1996 Dan is a young, strong utility player in his second season with the club and seeking to establish himself in the First Team. A product of the Morecambe FC Academy DANNY McGAHON - Defender, D.O.B - 27/1/1989 Danny has re-joined the Mintcakes for his second spell with the club. A right back with bags of energy who delivers some quality crosses higher up the pitch, Danny has also turned out for Ambleside and Milnthorpe Corinthians.

JOSH WARDLE - Defender, D.O.B - 23/12/1996 A tall and commanding central defender, Josh is very competitive and has become a pivotal member of Kendal Town’s defence this season. He has also played for Slyne with Hest and Lancaster City.

ADAM FREELAND - Defender, D.O.B - 22/10/1992 An imposing central defender who was previously with Lancaster City, Adam is a leader on the pitch and the coaching staff are confident will be a big player for Kendal Town this season.

CALLUM HOCTOR - Defender, D.O.B - 18/9/1992 Callum is a left sided player who missed the end of last season due to a serious knee injury.

Callum is excellent going forward and provides competition for places on the left hand side. He was previously with AFC Darwen.

BEN THOMAS - Defender, D.O.B -7/12/1996 Ben hails from Liverpool and undoubtedly has some real quality. “Thomo” is a tough tackling, nononsense former Morecambe left back, who has made that position his own.

SAM BAILEY - Midfield, D.O.B - 6/9/1995 Sam is a former Bolton Wanderers and Lancaster City player who is in his third season with Kendal Town. He is a right sided midfielder that was Kendal’s leading goalscorer last season. His range of passing and vision is second to none.

CHARLIE BAILEY - Midfield, D.O.B - 12/6/1997 Charlie a returning hero who has signed for Kendal Town after numerous approaches from bigger clubs. “Chas” is the brother of Sam and a fans’ favourite, who starred for Kendal on loan from Morecambe FC last season. His ability and quality in front of goal are vital to the team.

JOSH DRAYCOTT, D.O.B -3/11/1992 Josh spent a long period out of the game and has joined the Mintcakes having previously played for Morecambe and Lancaster City.

DANNY FORBES - Midfield, D.O.B - 5/7/1995 Danny is a former Preston North End player in his third season at Kendal Town. He is a creative linchpin in midfield whose skill and his ability to glide past players make him an integral part of the Mintcakes team. “Forbsey” is a firm favorite with the supporters.

MARTIN GRUNDY - Midfield, D.O.B - 1/10/1990 Martin has returned from Lancaster City for his second spell with the club.”Grunds” is a midfielder who retains the ball very well and has a complete range of passes. A box to box midfielder with plenty of energy.

STUART McDONALD - Midfield (Captain), D.O.B - 12/9/1990 Stu is a local lad who signed for his hometown club in December 2015, having previously played for Gretna and Bolton Wanderers. Aa a midfielder or defender he has been outstanding since arriving at Kendal Town. Undoubtably the fittest player at the club, his ability on the ball makes him a key man for the Mintcakes.

ANTHONY LYNCH - Midfield, D.O.B - 31/1/1991 Anthony signed earlier this season from AFC Darwen. A very tricky left sided player with an eye for goal .His excellent technical ability will also give the coaches options in other positions.

CALLUM FAWCETT - Midfield, D.O.B - 1/09/1998 At 17 years old and over six feet tall, Callum is a young player with a promising future at Kendal Town. He is a classy central midfielder who is comfortable in a number of positions and has been part of the youth sections of Burnley and Carlise United..

MATT DUDLEY - Striker, D.O.B - 30/09/1993 Matt joined the Mintcakes from AFC Fylde earlier this season MATTHEW POOLE - Striker, D.O.B - 22/10/1990 A striker pushing hard for a starting spot, “Matty” picked up a slight knee injury after impressive hold up play during preseason at Dunston UTS. He returned to action against Workington netting the second goa and has previously played for Lancaster City and Garstang.

CHARLIE BOWMAN - Striker, D.O.B - 12/7/1992 Charlie is in his first season at the club having previously played for Gretna, and Carlisle United. He runs the channels well and has excellent movement in the box.

STEVEN YARNSON - Striker, Steven is a second-year scholar at Morecambe FC, who signed for Kendal in January 2017 and scored five goals in his first five appearances. He is with the Mintcakes on a work-experience loan.

The Early Years of Prescot FC Part Two: Some Matches and Players

Neville Walker’s account of Prescot FC’s early years includes some bizarre matches – like the occasion in 1889-90 when all the balls burst and the game had to be abandoned; and a home match the following season when visitors Earlestown were trailing 2-0 at half-time, ‘went into a collective sulk and refused to continue’. In one match at Bootle at this time the home club’s tactics were spearheaded by ‘an array of female beauty’ – lovely young Bootle ‘cheerleaders’ aimed at turning the heads of the Prescot players while their team made advances of a different kind on the Prescot goal!

It was an era when football was still in its infancy and anything could happen. This ran the full gamut from players entertaining the crowd with a little half-time dancing, the light fantastic tripped by Jack Barlow and Joe Foster, versus Horwich, 1894-95, to the full-scale riot that broke out during a match at Whiston a year earlier. On this occasion Prescot’s Jack Woodward put the ball in the Whiston net. Unfortunately, the Whiston goalkeeper was still holding it at the time. (Shades of Prescot’s Billy Mercer playing for Huddersfield in the 1928 FA Cup Final and Manchester United’s Harry Gregg in 1958.) The goal was disallowed but pretty soon all twenty-two players were embroiled in a punch-up. Then the 2,000 crowd joined in. Officials and police were unable to quell the riot and the match was abandoned.

At a home match on Boxing Day 1892 the referee was attacked following an 11-2 defeat against Liverpool Reserves and the Warrington Road ground closed by the Liverpool FA for a short period in early 1893. (I’m beginning to understand Prescot Cricket Club’s reservations about developing that sloping pitch next to Slacky Brow!) But the most bizarre match during this early period occurred in 1893-94 in the form of a friendly match between Prescot FC and the ‘Prescot Darkies’, a local minstrel troupe. Minstrel shows, in which white men coloured their faces with black boot polish and sang songs from the American Deep South, are unthinkable these days, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries they were extremely popular – among white audiences, at least. BBC TV’s Black and White Minstrel Show ran from 1958 to 1978, by the way. Writing decades before the era of political correctness, the Prescot Reporter announced that ‘the niggers’ won 11-5. In the evening they put on a show at the Assembly Rooms (close to the old Royal Hotel).

Despite the valiant efforts of Neville Walker, we still know very little about Prescot’s earliest players compared with the Roscoes, Whalleys, Jellys, Rainfords, Grisedales and Watkinsons of the 1930-60 period. All we know for sure about Gatley H. (‘Gat’) Lyon is that he was an accomplished right-back who captained Prescot FC in the late 1880s and early 1890s and at some point in his career enjoyed a short spell with Liverpool Caledonians at their ground in Wavertree. He may have been part of the Caledonians team that won the Liverpool Senior Shield and played in the Lancashire League 1892-93. An unusual name like ‘Gatley’ is a God-send for genealogists. According to public records Gatley Henry Lyon was born sometime between April and June 1867 and according to the 1871 Census was the eldest child of William and Catherine Lyon of Irwell Lane, Runcorn, Cheshire. By the time of the 1891 Census Gat was a lodger living in St Helens Road, Eccleston and

working as a Watch Barrel Maker. Three years later, in the summer of 1894, he married the twenty-year-old Emily Lyon with whom he fathered sons Cecil Henry (born 1897) and William Herbert (1898). Sadly, it’s likely that Emily died giving birth to her second child. By the time of the 1901 Census Gat, the two boys and his sister Wilhelmina Margaretta (listed as ‘Housekeeper Not Domestic’) were living at 13 Lancaster Terrace (off Scotchbarn Lane), Prescot. Gat’s profession is now described as ‘Watchmaker Enamel Dial Maker’. The last available Census, published in 1911, reveals that Gat was working as an Electrical Fittings Inspector and living with his family a few doors along at 17 Lancaster Terrace. He died between April and June 1914 aged about 46. Wilhelmina Margaretta outlived her brother by 22 years, dying in Prescot aged 69 in 1936. The fate of Gat’s two sons is unknown.

‘Hobbins’ is another unusual name welcomed by genealogists. One of Prescot’s early goalkeepers was called ‘J. Hobbins’. We don’t know precisely when or for how long he played, but he did distinguish himself by scoring the 20th out of 23 goals against Liverpool Wanderers – Prescot’s all-time highest score. I have traced what must have been this player’s family back to the 1841 Census, when the widowed Mary Hobbins and her two sons John and William (aged nine and six respectively) were living with Mary’s brother James Alcock in Houghton Street, Prescot. John was born c1833. If he was the ‘J. Hobbins’ who later played for Prescot he would have been in his early fifties when Prescot FC was formed. A more likely candidate might be found in three other members of the family. The first is James Hobbins, son of John’s brother William, born c1861. Next comes another John Hobbins, James’s brother and William’s second son, born c1863. To make matters even more complicated a further John Hobbins appeared on the scene in 1868 – the son of John Hobbins I and his wife Mary. William’s family remained in Prescot, living at different times at 4 Houghton Street (probably the house occupied by the Alcock family in 1841) and both 53 and 93 Kemble Street. Earlier in life they’d lived in Kemble Street when it was still called Hillock Street. Like Gat Lyon, the men in William’s family were mostly connected with Prescot’s watch-making industry: William and James as Watch Frame Makers and his brother John as ‘Fusee’ or ‘Fuzee’ (spindle) Makers.

William’s brother John was also a ‘Fuzee’ Maker.

At the time of the 1881 Census he and his family lived at 42 Houghton Street, just nineteen doors or so away from William’s brood, but spent most of their lives elsewhere. In earlier days they’d lived in Eccleston Street, Fall Lane (later Derby Street) and Plumb’s Yard, Whiston, but by 1891 John and his family had moved to Oldham and the Lancashire cotton and iron industries.

The most successful Prescot player from this period was probably Bill Robinson. I have made several references in the past to the photograph hanging in the Cables directors’ lounge of players and officials gathered outside the Hope and Anchor Hotel during the 1913-14 season. (A version of this picture is shown to the left.) I have also pointed out that the tall man on the rear right of the picture, wearing a flat cap and standing with his back to the drainpipe, was Bill Robinson ‘Scout from Hull City’ (Walker).

The Yorkshire club had been formed in June 1904 and in the ensuing years adopted the

The Early Years of Prescot FC Part Two: Some Matches and Players

newly re-constituted Prescot Athletic as a sort of nursery club. As early as 1906 Prescotborn Walter Dagnall was playing for Hull City and in the two years prior to World War One Sam and Jack Lyon (no relation to Gat as far as I know), Jimmy Middlehurst, Tommy Burns and goalkeeper Bill Mercer had followed suit. It is now clear that the connection between the two clubs was forged by Bill Robinson, who made 119 appearances for Hull (Football League Division 2) and scored six goals between 1905 and 1908 (Michael Joyce, Football League Players’ Records 1888-1939). He also had spells at Manchester City (just one match, 1903), Bolton Wanderers (31 appearances, 1908-10) and Accrington Stanley (no details). It cannot have been pure coincidence that Hull City and the Prescot club were both nicknamed ‘The Tigers’ and played in yellow-and-black stripes.

William Samuel (‘Bill’) Robinson was born in Prescot sometime between July and September 1880. He was the seventh child of William Samuel Senior (c1845-99) and Esther nee Green (c1845-1917). They had been married in Eccleston on 16 February 1867 and at the time of the 1881 Census were living at 36 Eccleston Street, Prescot. William Senior is listed as a Joiner. By 1891 the family had moved to 37 Kemble Street and accumulated three more children, the ten of them ranging from three to 24 years old. Bill’s father William died aged about 44 in 1899. In 1901 widower Esther Robinson and her family were living at 37 Kemble Street and Bill was listed as a Joiner’s Apprentice. He was also a half-back with Prescot FC by this stage. By 1911 he’d completed his apprenticeship, risen to ‘House Joiner Journeyman’ and was living with his wife Margaret and six-year-old daughter Edna May at 41 Kemble Street. He’d married Margaret towards the end of 1903. Who was she?

None other than Margaret nee Dagnall, daughter of William and Mary Dagnall of 16 Duke Street and sister of Prescot players Bill, Joe and Arthur (‘Tat’) Dagnall. Bill Robinson died in Prescot in the early months of 1926 aged about 45.

After nearly four seasons in the cold, Prescot FC rose like a Phoenix from the ashes in time for the 1906-07 season. It also sported a new name (Prescot Athletic) and a brand new stadium at the bottom end of Hope Street that accommodated not only the footballers but those cyclists and athletes thwarted by the dispute with Prescot Cricket Club in 1902. Fittingly, the land had been acquired through the influence of the Hon. Arthur Stanley (pictured, right). The Cricket Club continued to play at the Warrington Road ground until it was acquired for building purposes by British Insulated Cables in 1938, after which it moved to its present ground on Burrows Lane. In doing so it had exchanged what was probably an unattractive urban location for a rural idyll. The football club, on the other hand, had secured a ground close to the hustle and bustle of a busy industrial town centre. I suspect both clubs are still happy with this arrangement.

Evo-Stik League Division One North News DOLLY BLUES STAY NINE POINTS CLEAR Lancaster City maintained their nine-point lead at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League First Division North table after a 3-1 away win at fourth-placed Ossett Town last Saturday.

Tom Kilifin gave the Dolly Blues a 21st minute lead at the 4G Voice & Data Stadium that Jacob Gregory doubled after 34 minutes. A Jordan Connerton penalty three minutes after the break effectively killed the game off as a contest although Town did grab a late consolation from Steve Ridley.

Second-placed Farsley Celtic ground out another crucial three points to keep the pressure on the leaders, as they defeated third-bottom Prescot Cables 2-1.

Goals from James Walshaw after just eight minutes and Adam Clayton in the 53rd minute were enough for The Celts, despite Dominic Marie’s reply just shy of the hour-mark providing a scare.

Third-placed Trafford were held to a 1-1 home draw by fourth-bottom Mossley AFC, whose Tom Dean gave them a 37th minute lead.

The hosts, who haven`t won at home this year to date, rescued a point through Andy Langford on 63 minutes.

Colne moved level on points with fifth-placed Clitheroe, who were inactive after four weatherhit fixtures on Saturday, after sharing a 2-2 draw over the Pennines at fellow play-off chasers Brighouse Town.

Luke Parkin gave the hosts a great start with a goal inside the opening two minutes but the Lancastrians recovered and eventually led 2-1 with goals from Jason Hart after 57 minutes and Oliver Wood 20 minutes later. A penalty converted by Parkin earned Town a point to keep them within reasonable distance of the top five.

Glossop North End are seventh and just a point behind Colne after winning 2-1 late on at Llanellian Road against inconsistent Colwyn Bay. The home side led at the break, thanks to a Danny Bartle effort right on the whistle. Max Leonard equalised 11 minutes from time and then Dale Johnson won it for the Hillmen with less than three minutes to go.

Second-bottom Goole AFC gave themselves hope with a 2-0 win against Droylsden at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds that moves the Vikings to within five points of third-bottom Prescot, Devonte Morton after 20 minutes and Derry Robson 16 minutes later the Goole marksmen.

Bottom side Burscough, however, are six points adrift of Goole after losing by the same scoreline at the Victoria Ground against Hyde United, whose Matty Beadle after 18 minutes and new signing Chris Sutherland nine minutes from time, were on the mark.

Non-League Newsround HITCHIN TOWN DIG DEEP FOR CHARITY EVO-STIK League Southern Hitchin Town have handed over a cheque for £1000 to national stillbirth and neonatal death charity Sands. The compassionate Canaries presented a giant cheque for the funds to the charity on Saturday before drawing 2-2 with Frome Town at Top Field in the EVO-STIK League Southern’s top flight.

Fans raised nearly half - £480 - when the club’s officials staged a ‘pay what you want’ fixture earlier this month for their 2-0 win over Kings Langley. The total was topped up with a further £100 from the Hitchin Town Supporters Club, another £120 from the club itself and a £300 donation from Canaries sponsors Mastercars Hitchin.

Originally planned for their game against Cirencester Town at the end of January before it was frozen off, the fundraising initiative was re-scheduled to help bring a positive end to the unfortunate Alfie Barker Twitter episode when the former dual-registered player mocked AFC Bournemouth’s Premier League footballer Harry Arter over his still-born daughter.

Hitchin Town and EVO-STIK League Southern chairman Terry Barratt thanked supporters and everyone else involved in the fundraising effort. He said: “Its fantastic news that the total donated to Sands is now £1,000. We are very grateful for your support, it is greatly appreciated.”

Sands chief executive Dr Clea Harmer added: “We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone at Hitchin Town Football Club. The funds raised will allow us to support parents whose babies have been stillborn or have died neonatally.

“As a charity we rely on the wonderful generosity of our supporters to continue our work.

Sands operates throughout the UK supporting anyone affected by the death of a baby and promotes research to reduce the loss of babies’ lives.”

Barker has since apologised for his “moment of madness” after being banned by the FA until August. The Canaries and Codicote FC, who both held his registration before cancelling it for the offence he’d caused, are now planning to turn out against each other in a future fundraising friendly for Sands.

Last season’s Hellenic League champions have confirmed that contracts are in place to start on a range of stadium improvements to meet the March 31 deadline to pass Football Association and EVO-STIK League Southern ground grading standards to play at Step 4 of the National League System.

EX-CANARY CULVERHOUSE TAKES THE REIGNS AT KING’S LYNN Former Norwich City star Ian Culverhouse is the new manager of EVO-STIK League Southern King’s Lynn Town.

The 52-year-old was named as the successor to Gary Setchell on Wednesday following the departure of the longserving Linnets boss 24 hours earlier on Tuesday. Appointed in 2010, Setchell was sacked following the club’s goalless draw at Cambridge City in the EVO-STIK League Southern’s top flight on Monday night, his side’s 16th draw of the season.

Culverhouse, who made almost 300 appearances for Norwich City over a nine-year spell and almost 100 appearances for Swindon Town, will take charge for the first time on Saturday at Hitchin Town after standing down as assistant manager of Dagenham & Redbridge to take the post.

Former defender Culverhouse cut his teeth in management as number two at Colchester United, Norwich City and Aston Villa before moving to the Daggers after hanging up his playing boots He is set to be introduced to the local media by the club on Thursday.

Lynn-based Setchell spent seven years in the hot-seat at The Walks after the club reformed in 2010 and became King’s Lynn Town. During his tenure, he guided the club to promotion from the United Counties League in 2012 before sweeping to the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League’s First Division South title in style the following season.

The Linnets paid tribute to Setchell is a statement on their website before unveiling former Canaries legend Culverhouse as his successor. The club said: “Stephen Cleeve, chairman of King’s Lynn Town FC, would like to place on record his thanks to Gary for his years of service both before and since his arrival at the club.

“Stephen Cleeve called the decision “the hardest that he has ever had to make” but felt that it was necessary to take stock as the end of season approaches. It is important to Stephen that the club is challenging for the play-offs, sadly this season we have fallen short in our agreed target and whilst the blame for this does not lie by any means solely at Gary’s door, it is imperative that the club moves forward next season and are genuinely involved in the promotion race.

“League football is still very much the aim of the club, and after weeks of thought the chairman felt it was in the club’s interest to act swiftly. The club would like to wish Gary well for the future and he will be assured a warm welcome whenever he visits The Walks Stadium.”

Farsley Celtic ground out another crucial three points to keep the pressure on leaders Lancaster City, as they defeated Prescot Cables 2-1. Goals from James Walshaw and Adam Clayton were enough forThe Celts, despite Dominic Marie’s reply providing a scare.

Farsley took the lead with the first clear cut opportunity of the game, with Jordan Deacey’s corner from the left hand side swung in towards the back post where James Walshaw rose highest to head home.

Ryan Watson had an excellent opportunity to double The Celts’ lead minutes later. James Walshaw headed down towards Jordan Deacey who fed Paul Walker, his pass finding the feet of Ryan Watson who fired wide of the upright from ten yards out.

Watson continued to be the centre of the action, as his cross picked out Paul Walker at the far post who controlled the ball before firing back across goal and just wide.

Farsley continued to press and had two fabulous chances in the space of a minute.

First Paul Walker played in Ryan Watson, however he was denied by Prescot ‘keeper Marcus Burgess. From the resulting corner Burgess got a fist to Deacey’s delivery but could only pick out Peter Davidson in space who blazed his effort over the bar.

As the second half began Prescot went searching for an equaliser and they came close through Dominic Marie. Joe Feux swung in a cross towards Marie who’s header struck the inside of the post before Farsley hooked the ball away to safety.

Within minutes Farsley had doubled their lead. Paul Walker played in Aiden Savory who was still up after a corner and his shot was saved by Burgess, but straight onto the head of Adam Clayton who nodded home the rebound.

Just before the hour mark Dominic Marie hauled Prescot back into the game. Receiving the ball 30 yards from goal, Marie bent the ball into the top corner past the outstretched hand of Graeme McKibbin in the Farsley goal.

But back came Farsley, intent on finding a third goal to secure the points. James Walshaw was played in by Ryan Watson but he failed to hit the target, before Watson then played in Paul Walker, who cut in before unleashing a shot which was well saved by Burgess.

With time running out Prescot started to pile on the pressure as they searched for a valuable point away from home. James Edgar fired just wide from the edge of the box, before Cables came incredibly close. Harry Cain hit the woodwork with his low effort before Prescot recycled the ball towards Dominic Marie, who’s rasping shot was superbly pushed away by Graeme McKibbin, and Farsley held on for the three points.

From The Archives The after-match playing (on the amplifier) of Joe Loss’ popular recording of “In The Mood” appropriately reflected Prescot Cables’ pleasing display against Wigan Athletic at Hope Street on Saturday. Remembering their FA Cup exit forced by Wigan three weeks ago, Cables were certainly in the right mood to begrudge their visitors the chance of repeating the performance in the Lancashire Junior Cup clash.

Inspired by a first minute goal Prescot played admirably form the first to last whistle. The three goal victory did not flatter their superiority but rather the contrary for Wigan as they were often made to look a poor team. The whole victorious team played a game which pleased even the sternest of critics.

From the whole ninety minutes Prescot were in their most imperious mood. Their mastery was even more pronounced in the second half when they had their opponents completely “moth-eaten”.

Indeed, Wigan were lucky that the score was not doubled.

Most attractive feature of the match was the brilliant footwork and scheming of the two home men Freddy Kilshaw and Sandy Lyon. Both produced some textbook touches that completely outwitted the visitors defenders.

Stanley Johns, after missing the Accrington match, was more industrious at centre forward than he has been for some time and fully contributed his share to a grand exhibition of football.

The visiting attack failed to make much impression against the masterly Prescot defence. In the main they were overwhelmed by the sparkle of a good all round eleven and rarely looked likely to score. Ron Lewis had an easy afternoon in the Prescot goal. He had only one difficult shot to handle.

Amid Prescot’s defensive work against which the visitors advances petered out. Albert Jelly could always be seen performing solidly. He successfully shadowed Ron Baker the usually lively centre forward and granted him little opportunity to augment his scoring records.

Bill Jordan and Tommy McMahon afforded Jelly good support while Rainford and Grainger were much surer of themselves. Grainger especially showed improved clearances.

As far as Prescot supporters were concerned the game opened in pleasing fashion with the home side taking an unexpected lead within the first two minutes of play. Sandy Lyon was the marksman with a well placed shot, but credit must also go to Johns for it was he who initiated the movement by delivering a through pass.

This was the only scoring of the opening half, but generally Cables looked the more dangerous.

The nearest Athletic came to scoring was after neat play between Oakes and Taylor. Barker being only just wide with a header off the former’s centre.

Prospects of play becoming coarse were dangerously high at one spell. Referee Leigh of Football League status, wisely administering friendly advice. The second half was played in more admirable fashion.

Prescot performed even better on the resumption. There was no slackening and the increase of the lead was fully merited. Rogers sent in a perfectly paced centre which Johns met to head inot the net, giving Cooper no chance to save.

Next came number three. Howcroft fouled Rogers on the edge of the penalty box. Jordan took the free kick and Howcroft intercepted but the ball rebounded to Jordan who unerringly beat Cooper all ends up with his opportune shot - a ‘picture’ goal.

Cooper was constantly in the thick of the fray, and was fortunate not to be beaten more than thrice.

Harry Higham almost broke the crossbar with a terrific shot which had him beaten and Rogers was unluckly with a ground shot which just turned the wrong side of the post. And these were but two of the many “let offs”.

Well played Prescot Cables. You pleased us all.

A Brief History of Prescot Cables FC Prescot Football Club was formed in 1884 and the first organised game of Association Football ever played in Prescot took place against the second team of a local St Helens side, St Thomas. Prescot lost 3-1.

After playing friendly games for the first five years, Prescot entered the Liverpool & District League in 1889. Prescot’s highest finishing position in that league was third in 1891-92, the year in which Prescot entered the FA Cup for the first time. A home game against Crewe Alexandra attracted 3,000 spectators to Prescot’s ‘Slacky Brow’ ground, where Prescot were beaten 7-1.

Prescot joined the Lancashire Alliance in 1895 and were champions in 1899-1900. The club finished bottom the following year but joined the higher standard Lancashire League for 1901-02. A ground dispute resulted in Prescot dropping out of the league in 190203 and Prescot FC was dormant until 1906 when an athletic and football ground was opened at Hope Street and Prescot Athletic FC, was formed. Prescot Athletic started in the St Helens & District League and won the championship in the first year, after which they joined the Liverpool League for four seasons. The Liverpool County Combination became the Prescot club’s sixth league, in 1911-12.

Leagues were suspended in 1914 for the Great War and the post-war Prescot club dropped ‘Athletic’ from its name and joined the Lancashire Combination Liverpool Section. In their first season, 1918-19, Prescot finished runners-up to Tranmere Rovers but did not fare too well the following season and the club returned to the more locallybased Liverpool County Combination for the 1920-21 season and spent a further seven years in that league.

In 1928, the local expanding cable giants, BICC, donated a magnificent 1,000-seater stand (which was destroyed by fire in 1960) to the club. In what was clearly an early form of commercial sponsorship, the club’s name was changed to Prescot Cables and the team colours became black and amber to commemorate a bit of local industrial history, as the first successful insulated cable drawn at Prescot was covered with black and amber paper. Prescot Cables joined the Lancashire Combination In 1928-29 and, in 1929, applied to join the Football League Third Division (North), along with four other hopefuls. All the applicants failed, although one, Mansfield Town, was successful two years later.

Prescot Cables changed its name to Prescot Town in 1964 but the club struggled and in 1975, it was voted out of the Lancashire Combination. Prescot Town joined the MidCheshire League and won it at the first attempt. In 1978-79 they returned to the Cheshire County League, in Division Two, after an absence of 42 years. Prescot were Division Two champions the following season, with Accrington Stanley as runners-up.

In 1980, the name of Prescot Cables was re-taken and in 1982, Cables became a member of the newly formed North West Counties League where they remained for 20 years. Prescot finished in the top 10 in NWCL Division One in all but one season since 1990 and, in 2001-02, the club had its most successful season for over two decades, winning the Worthington Challenge Trophy (League Cup) and finishing as Division One runners-up, narrowly missing out on promotion to UniBond League Division One. However, Prescot went one better in 2002-03 and finished as champions of NWCL Division One to win promotion to the UniBond League Division One. Ground improvements were carried out at Valerie Park (formerly known as Hope Street) to meet the ground standard and ensure that Prescot could take their place in the higher league.

For the season 2004-05, Prescot found themselves playing at the highest level in their history. Due to a suitable finishing position, and the re-organisation of the football pyramid, Prescot took their place in the Unibond Premier Division. As a result of a team unable to forfill their fixtures, and after the controversial intervention of the FA, Cables were elevated to 5th position in the league. Cables had the opportunity to gain promotion to the Conference North, however, defeat at Workington in the first play-off game ended that dream - for now !

For the season 2005-06, it was a case of consolidation with a new football committee being formed from the Supporters Club. The previous football club, Prescot Cables, was transferred over to another organisation, namely Prescot Football Club Ltd (although trading as Prescot Cables Football Club).

The club produced another mid-table finish in the following season to avoid becoming involved in another non-league ‘shake-up’ that saw two Unibond First Divisions being created for the 2007/08 season.

On the final game of the 2007/08 campaign, Prescot was 15 minutes from relegation.

Two late goals secured a win at Lincoln United and survival. Due to the tightness of points and goal difference, Cables eventually finished in 13th place ! Shortly after the season’s end, the ground was purchased by Triman Developments Ltd from Mr Mercer’s company (the former Chairman of the club, Prescot Cables AFC). The current football club are working on ground improvements in order to provide the team and supporters with an opportunity to move forward.

A lacklustre 2008/09 season saw Prescot propping up the Premier Division. Manager Andy Gray departed for Burscough. He was replaced by Joe Gibiliru who embarked on a fresh start with player personnel.

Joe managed to bring some much needed stability to the club as the team finished in mid table. 2010 saw some of Cables regular performers leave for pastures new and several fresh faces arrive.

Gibiliru was relieved of his duties around the time of the big freeze in December 2010 and assistant Dave Ridler took over. He managed to secure Cables Evo-Stik league status for another season.

The 2011-12 season was a tale of five managers. Dave Ridler (who left for Australia in January 2012), Karl Bell, Karl Connolly all took charge for at least one match. Following the controversial departure of Shaun Reid to Warrington Town in March, Joe Gibiliru took over for the remaining games. The team and club re-grouped after the Reid fiasco to finish the season strongly to defy the odds and remain part of the Evo-Stik League.

David Powell was the new man in charge for the 2012-13 season. A virtually new squad assembled with inconsistent performances and results as a consequence. The playing surface and weather conditions forced many postponements. When matches finally began in earnest in the new year, Cables produced one of their most successful periods since the 2003 North West Counties campaign. A scheme asking donators to sponsor a pitch square in order to afford the much needed renovation the pitch, took on a life of its own. In the end the scheme became over subscribed.

Circumstances arose that led to David Powell leaving the club. In his place for the 201415 season came Neil Prince, who at 31, must be the youngest manager in Cables history and probably in the current Evo-Stik League. With limited resources the team managed to secure their Evo-Stik status.

The 2015-16 campaign began disastrously that led to Neil Prince being relieved of his duties. In came Andy Paxton, and with the same playing staff, managed to haul the team out of danger and finish the league season in their highest position for some time. Cables also reached the Final of the Liverpool Senior Cup. With the club attracting new and increased sponsorship, the club approached 2016-17 in more confident fashion.

However, due to work commitments Andy Paxton had to step down from the role of First Team Manager. The club moved swiftly to appoint Brian Richardson. Andy remained in close contact with the club and at the AGM was appointed on to the Board.
