LEADERSHIP MESSAGE

Greetings Friends and Stakeholders of PVM! Senior living and services have undergone massive change and challenges. Yet the time is right for being transformational. PVM endeavors to emerge vibrant and stronger. In 2021 we made great strides in doing so. Among the many accomplishments were: Effective and timely communication of numerous public health and regulatory orders/guidelines.

Vaccine clinics with high participation by residents and staff that were among the first in the county.

Major improvements in overall cyber protection.

Innovative uses of technology with smart homes, Google nests and other devices.

Stable supplies of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).

Increased assistance financially for staff via increased cost share of some benefits and an emergency fund during the pandemic for staff and their families as needed.

Effective advocacy at all levels of government.

Increased the PVM public profile via earned media, social media and digital marketing.

Solid progress with eight major development projects underway.

Significant progress in securing major funding.

Accomplishing the directions and initiatives in the 2019-2021 strategic plan.

Expanded collaborations with universities and colleges.

This important work was made possible by the contributions of all of you - giving of your time, talent and treasure in such a generous fashion. We at PVM hold you in the highest regard and look forward to our future accomplishments. As one of our board members stated: “That sure is what it is all about!”

Presbyterian Villages of Michigan is comprised of diverse and dedicated individuals who share a common bond: our chance to make a difference. A difference that touches the lives of residents and their families, seniors and communities. In 2021 we made great strides with “transforming senior living and services”.

This 2021 PVM Annual Report highlights some key events that represent the individuals and teams that are making a difference every day in the lives of others. There are hundreds of these stories that blend together to create the rich tapestry that is PVM. NATALIE BROTHERS CELEBRATED 100 YEARS PVM Board Member Emeritus Ms. Brothers has inspired others for decades: in education, community development and with the growth of PVM. She continues to be stalwart in her dedication to the PVM Board. She has been influential in PVM’s commitment to senior housing in Detroit. At her birthday celebration she was interviewed by the media and asked what her secret was to attaining her amazing longevity. She replied that enjoying whatever you like in moderation is a key to success. She went on to say that she enjoys a White Castle hamburger from time to time due to her deep seated roots in Detroit. Several leaders from White Castle heard the interview with Charlie Langton of Fox News and delivered 100 of their hamburgers to her celebration as a surprise gift. This added a special touch to the heartfelt best wishes of many family and friends who joined in via Zoom.

SPRING MEADOWS MADE A DIFFERENCE The Village of Spring Meadows in Jackson exemplified what we like to portray in that PVM residents are always finding ways to give back to their communities. It is a Give-and -Take, not a one-way street. This team of talented knitters answered a Call to Action by the surrounding community. While they were setting up their annual participation in the Toys for Tots Program they asked if there was anything else they could do to help out. The answer was that there were 4000 hats needed for 0-14 year old children. Six residents joined forces and in just seven weeks were able to create 68 hats to help. One of the residents, Bee Daniel, is 96 years of age. This group continues to meet weekly; they are already up to 49 hats to contribute for 2022. We bet they will definitely top last year’s contribution.

THE HUMANA VILLAGE VICTORY CUP Enthusiasm remained high for the 2021 Humana Village Victory cup even though it had to be held remotely. The competition continued to be fierce to capture the Cup. The Village of Westland was victorious in the end. The Village of Oakland Woods captured the Spirit Award. Many thanks to HUMANA for sponsoring this important event.

Due to successful advocacy in partnership with LeadingAge, PVM was one of the first organizations in the country to be able to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to any residents, staff and board members who wanted to take advantage of this life-saving initiative.

Delta Manor was founded as the first national senior affordable living complex sponsored by a sorority.

VISIT FROM HUD SECRETARY MARCIA FUDGE In her first visit to Detroit HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge toured Delta Manor and Thome Rivertown. She was impressed with the quality of these communities and stated that this is the way housing and services should be provided. Madam Secretary Fudge has ties to both communities. As a sorority sister of many board members at Delta Manor (founded by Delta Sigma Theta) she was pleased to accept their invitation to visit. She has personal ties as well to a resident at Thome Rivertown. She pledged support for more affordable housing and services to provide quality of life for a growing demographic.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION & JUSTICE HIGHLIGHTS

Increasing Diversity, One Intern At A Time PVM is committed to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice. Related to our continuous journey of education, awareness, recognition, self-discovery, and celebration, in 2021 we built upon the previous work of building a business case for DEI that had been approved by the PVM Board of Directors. Leaders and employees participated in Diversity and Inclusion training; and an Intercultural Development Inventory was provided for the Executive Team and Diversity & Inclusion Council members. The PVM Board has developed a framework and focus for DEIJ. This framework will be cascaded to local boards, leaders, employees and residents.
