Guests at the 17th Annual PVM Gala danced the night away on November 8th at The Mint in Lathrup Village. They were greeted by a champagne wall which was the first clue that a new and energized take on a long-standing tradition was in store for them. Dancers from the Mitchell Finke Dance Troupe added to the flair for the evening. However, attendees of all ages joined in the fun for the entire evening. A more informal afterglow took place with bowling available and welcomed. No one seemed to want to go home, a sign of a great party! Thanks to our donors and sponsors $276,260 was raised.

Why You’re Needed... Thanks to generous donors like YOU, we’ve been able to raise over $2.1 million for a state-of-the-art Health & Wellness Center at the Village of East Harbor in Chesterfield. That’s great news for residents like Pat, who turned to East Harbor’s in-house therapy team after falling and breaking her arm nearly three years ago. “The range of motion the therapists helped me to achieve exceeded what my surgeon thought I’d be able to do,” Pat says. All this, she says, despite the limited space and equipment staff had to work with. “Think of what I could have achieved in a larger space,” Pat says. “I could have been the next pitcher for the Tigers!” Thankfully, East Harbor’s new Health & Wellness Center will soon become a reality for Pat and her fellow seniors. The first phase of the project – a state-of-the-art rehab center – is already open,

with construction on the Health & Wellness Center slated to wrap in 2021. Touring West Michigan A whirlwind tour of our beautiful Villages in West Michigan was enjoyed by PVM board members and staff this summer. It offered a great opportunity to get to know the residents and staff a bit more at The Village of Sage Grove in Kalamazoo, The Village of Mill Creek in Battle Creek, and The Village of Spring Meadows in Jackson. We then concluded our tour at our newest West Michigan location, Vista Grande Villa, in Jackson with a reception and board meeting. All who joined the tour remarked that we have much to be proud of when it comes to the quality of our Villages. Many thanks to our dedicated staff who make PVM what we are every single day.

Summer Village Celebrations!
The Village of Redford celebrated its new renovations with a ribbon cutting event. President & CEO Roger Myers, Redford board members and PVM board members were in attendance to celebrate with residents and staff. This will be followed next year with a grand celebration as PVM will be celebrating our 75th Anniversary; and The Village of Redford was our first location. The include apartments and the new community room/dining room. These renovations are also part of a bigger strategic initiative to reposition our campuses into the next several decades.

Village of Rosebush Manor 15th Anniversary Celebration The Village of Rosebush Manor had a 15th Anniversary celebration event on Thursday, October 17th. Residents past and present, family members, board members and staff who have been a part of Rosebush Manor since its inception were invited to attend.“The rich history of Rosebush Manor as a vibrant member of the community has been achieved through the leadership and service of all involved,” says Lynn Swindlehurst, board chair. Six area churches (Catholic, Methodist and Presbyterian) founded Rosebush Manor with a vision and a commitment to enable seniors to continue residing in their local community. The Village of Rosebush Manor is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is locally owned and managed by PVM. It offers residents the independent lifestyle they seek while providing an array of amenities and community engagement. PVM has provided services to more than 6,000 seniors across Michigan of all faiths for 74 years. It operates over thirty senior residences and an array of home and community-based services.
The Village of St. Martha’s The Village of St. Martha’s celebrated its tenth anniversary with a Hollywood-style celebration. A little bit of magic was infused into the event with stylish dressing by participants and gilded decorations. Presenters were Kern Tomlin, president of the St. Martha’s Board, and Andrea Felice, long-time administrator. Many board members and other PVM stakeholders were in attendance to join in the celebration. Several residents at The Village of St. Martha’s have lived at this community since it opened. It is a Veterans Preference location which allows for priority move-in.

The Village of Oakland Woods Anniversary Celebration Yet another great anniversary celebration took place at The Village of Oakland Woods. This time instead of wearing Village Victory Cup attire they celebrated with luau themed dress and decorations. Professional luau dancers performed and added adventure to the festivities. The residents are all in when it comes to celebrating and catching up with friends and neighbors. A sense of community abounds!

Caregivers Best Friend Informal caregivers (families and friends) play a critical role in our society. Grantmakers in Aging estimate that over 34 million Americans provided unpaid care to an adult loved one over the age of 50 last year. And chances are, if you are a caregiver, you spend about 30 hours per week providing that care. One advantage of having a loved one living at PVM is that there is a support system which can help to reduce responsibilities and time needed to keep our loved ones as independent as possible. Or, in the case of long-term care an even greater sharing of duties is available. For example, service coordinators, care managers and other staff can access needed resources. A new resource has been launched by PVM to go beyond traditional ways of helping seniors. This was made possible by a grant from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund.
Our new blog and website, Caregivers BestFriend.org, is teaching caregivers and their loved ones how to utilize the latest technology to save time and reduce stress. On this site you can learn how to use services such as Shipt, Lyft, Uber, Tackle and others to make your life just a bit easier. As of this writing we are finalists in a national contest for our video showcasing how CAREGIVERS BEST FRIEND can be of help. Please share this information with family and friends. Chances are you can benefit from this regardless of your situation. Feel free to let us know what you like about the site and give any recommendations you may have.

Annual PVM Leadership Advance Our annual leadership advance was held at Marygrove Campus in Detroit. Amidst beautiful surroundings major best practices and innovations took center stage. This session also allowed leaders in the organization and at the board level to understand more in-depth the inner workings of PVM and how all parts of the organization intersect. Topics included budgeting, reporting and compliance; quality, risk management and compliance; organizational structure, governance system, strategic planning, and fund raising, technology, facilities advancement, culture, human resources and organizational development; marketing, sales and communications, advocacy and public policy; and operations, housing and facilities. Many participants expressed that this was very helpful in understanding how their work is integrated with the entire organization. PVM hosts this leadership advance on an annual basis.

Seventy Over 70 Award Our extraordinary volunteer Jo-Ann Hale was recently honored by the Hannan Center with an award at their Seventy Over 70 gala. These awards represent the human potential that continues and in many cases increases with age. Awardees reflect the diverse interests, accomplishments and lifestyles of older people in Michigan. Jo-Ann’s award category was “Unsung Hero”. She is a hero to us every day and brightens the day of everyone she touches. Congratulations Jo-Ann!

Alumni Achievement Award Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer for PVM, Lynn Alexander was recently awarded an Alumni Achievement Award from her Alma Mater, Defiance College of Defiance, Ohio. The Award “brings to the attention of the College community, in a dignified and meaningful way, Alumnae of the Defiance College who have made outstanding achievements in their fields of endeavor. The nominees must have demonstrated exemplary service to their community and society”. Ms. Alexander, a 1973 Defiance College graduate, is currently Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Presbyterian Villages of Michigan. She also serves on the Board of Visitors of the Institute of Gerontology at Wayne State University and as Vice Chair of the Michigan Health Endowment Fund. From 1997-2002 she served as a member of Governor John Engler’s Cabinet, in the position of Director of the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging. She is the author of “Caregiving Tsunami” a guide for caregivers. In accepting the Award, Ms. Alexander talked of the inspirations she received at Defiance which led to her successful career.
Paul Miller, President of the PVM Foundation was awarded the Dr. John S. Lore Award for Outstanding Fundraising Executive by the Association of Fundraising Professionals for Greater Detroit. Each year the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) celebrates and honors the passion, commitment and leadership of Southeastern Michigan's philanthropists, distinguished volunteers and those in the fundraising profession. AFP is the only association representing the entire fundraising profession. It exists to foster the development and growth of fundraising professionals, to preserve and enhance philanthropy and volunteerism, and to promote the highest ethical standards in the fundraising profession worldwide. Paul J. Miller, CFRE, President of the PVM Foundation, joined PVM in 2006 as the Director of Major and Planned Giving. A professional development officer with over 20 years of experience in fundraising, he previously served as Manager of Corporate Partnerships and Major Gifts for Special Olympics Michigan (1998-2006), and Marketing and Promotion Manager for Metro Trading Association (1991-1998). Miller holds an undergraduate degree from Heidelberg University and a Master in Business Administration from Central Michigan University. He served as the past President of the Greater Detroit Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. He also is a member of the Council of Michigan Foundations, Planned Giving Roundtable of Southeast Michigan and Grant Makers in Aging.

New Victors Capture The Village Victory Cup The Village of Oakland Woods snatched the chance from The Village of Westland to become the winner for the 5th time in a row! Competition was fierce; but in the end Oakland Woods was victorious. Village of Oakman Manor captured the Spirit Award. Regardless of the outcome, all participants had a great time and are already in gear to return next year. This annual event has morphed into a year long quest for Wellness. Teams can often be seen working out throughout the year to keep their minds and bodies in good shape and have quality of life via good health.
