Sterling Presbyterian Manor received a certificate of recognition from Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America for reaching goals in fiscal year 2016, July 1, 2015, through June 30, 2016.

The recognition came through PMMA’s Emerald Awards Program, designed to encourage its 17 locations to achieve high levels of resident and employee satisfaction, meet financial goals, build philanthropic support for the organization’s mission and meet marketing goals. There are 11 areas measured for the Emerald Awards.

Mmm Mmm Good!

It is getting cold outside, so pull out the scarves, gloves, winter coats and cans of soup! Soup is on our “always available” menu, but this time of year we like to make some specialty soups to warm the soul. On a quick survey of favorite soups, we found that our residents enjoy a variety of ingredients in their one-stop meals.

vegetable beef and oyster with real fresh oysters that is definitely not out of a can. Some popular favorites were chicken noodle, cream of mushroom, chili, and chicken and dumplings.

The second most popular soup request was actually not homemade.

Instead, it is simply poured out of a can that is familiar to families worldwide. Campbell’s Tomato Soup is the favorite pick of several residents, who each prepare it differently. Many enjoy it paired with a grilled cheese sandwich, but some of our residents preferred it alone, mixed with milk, topped with cheese, or dipped with crackers.

The No. 1 soup request was potato and onion soup. One-fourth of our residents said that they love our potato and onion soup. The recipe we use is actually that of a

resident who died a few years ago.

She was a fantastic cook, and her husband still resides at the manor.

He, as well as several other residents, often request his wife’s signature recipe. Well, as Beethoven said, “Only the pure in heart can make a good soup!”

Sterling Presbyterian Manor on U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Home list

Sterling Presbyterian Manor has been named to the US News and World Report Best Nursing Homes list.

Sterling Presbyterian Manor is on the U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Homes 2016-17 list. The senior living community received the highest score of a five-star rating system to make the list, available today at usnews.com/nursinghomes.

The U.S. News and World Report list uses information from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the government agency that sets and enforces standards for nursing homes.

CMS assigns one to fie stars to each community for how well it performs in health inspections, nurse staffing and level of quality care.

employees continue to focus their efforts on delivering quality care every day,” said PMMA President and CEO Bruce Shogren. “The five-star ratings confirm their good work.”

This is the sixth consecutive year

Survey teams from the state conduct inspections in each community every 12 to 15 months. The surveys cover a checklist of about 180 items such as medication management, food preparation and delivery, proper paperwork, and resident enrichment activities.

In addition to Sterling Presbyterian Manor, five PMMA locations are on the honoree list with five-star ratings: Clay Center, Emporia, Lawrence, and Wichita in Kansas, and Kirkwood (Aberdeen Heights) in Missouri.

Residents and friends of Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America’s Art is Ageless program are proving that art, in any form, is an ageless ambition, whether you picked up a brush for the first time before reaching 20 or completed your first drawing after turning 80.

Sterling Presbyterian Manor is accepting entries for its Art is Ageless competition until March 17. Art will be on display from March 20 through March 24 in the Chapel from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, with a reception at 3:30 p.m. on March 24.

To receive an emerald, a community has to meet its goals in all 11 areas. Certificates of recognition were given out to communities that reached their goals in one or more category.

Sterling was recognized for achieving a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and meeting professional employee growth and safety goals.
