“When I was the director of activities, Pat ran circles around everyone,” said Cathy Boos, who currently serves as sales and marketing director at Presbyterian Manor. “She’s the hardest worker I’ve ever met. Residents and staff just love her.” Pat grew up southwest of Salina in Herington, Kan. At the age of 18, she got her first job in a senior living community in Topeka. Her first day coincided with the 1966 tornado, one of the deadliest and most destructive tornadoes in Kansas history. Nevertheless, Pat stuck with the job, and she’s worked in the senior living field ever since. “I’ve worked at almost all the communities in Salina, and there’s not a whole lot that compare to Presbyterian Manor,” Pat reports. “I fell in love with the Manor when I started, and these people are my family.” PIPER - continued on page 3

Employee of the Month: Alondra Escamilla Congratulations to Alondra Escamilla, Employee of the Month for May. She has worked for Salina Presbyterian Manor for nine months as a dining services assistant. Alondra was nominated for her compassionate demeanor with both residents and staff of Presbyterian Manor. She has a habit of taking great care with each conversation she has, truly providing quality senior services to fulfill our mission. In her free time, Alondra likes to
read, bake and spend time with her family. When asked what most people would not know about her, she said that she is the youth leader for her church, Nueva Esperanza Hispanic Church. One of her biggest and most important life goals is to live in Seattle. She loves the cloudy and rainy weather Seattle has yearround, and the nature surrounding the city is beautiful. ◆

John O’Donohue was an Irish poet, priest and philosopher. He was a proponent of a specific kind of Celtic spirituality, which informed his philosophy.
O’Donohue then describes particular styles of vision: “To the fearful eye, all is threatening. To the judgmental eye, everything is closed in definitive frames. To the resentful eye, everything is begrudged. To the indifferent eye, nothing calls or awakens. To the inferior eye, everyone else is greater, more beautiful, brilliant and gifted than you. To the loving eye, everything is real. Love is the light in which we see light. If we could look at the world in a loving way, then the world would rise before us full of invitation, possibility and depth. To recognize
In Celtic, “anam cara” translates to “soul friend.” In the early Celtic church, this could be a person who acted as a teacher, companion or spiritual guide. In his book “Anam Cara,” O’Donohue writes, “It is a startling truth that how you see and what you see determines how and who you will be.” O’Donohue encourages his readers “to explore your own particular
how you see things can bring you self-knowledge and enable you to glimpse the treasurers your life secretly holds.” I challenge each of you to spend some time sitting in nature and reflecting on these questions from Sister Joyce Rupp, O.S.M., a Roman Catholic author and speaker: “What kind of ‘eye’ do you have? How do you see others? Are you looking in a fixed manner? Are you open to surprise? If you focused on looking for the presence of the Risen Christ, would that change your perception? What might you discover?” ◆
