Chaplains learning and team-building SEPTEMBER 2022

Wichita Presbyterian Manor welcomes new executive director Last month, Jenna Beilman took the helm of Wichita Presbyterian Manor as its new executive director.

Jenna is a highly respected and motivated professional who has 11 years of experience in health care, with an emphasis on marketing, sales and customer service. Most recently, she served as the executive director of The Ensign Group Healthcare Resort in Leawood, Kan. Her responsibilities have included working hand-inhand with department heads to revamp and streamline operations to be more efficient and effective. She also focused on building relationships with area medical directors and community referral systems to successfully improve census.

For the first time, chaplains from across our PMMA communities gathered together in August for learning, and team-building.

The chaplains came to Wichita to participate in the Global Leadership Summit, a worldwide event simulcast out of Chicago, that focused not only on leadership but on personal growth as well.

“The variety of teachers used the accomplishments in their lives to inspire and motivate each of us to continue to develop in our own lives,” said Wichita Presbyterian Manor Chaplain Greg Spring. “Together our chaplains learned, were inspired and motivated.”

Lawrence Presbyterian Manor Chaplain Rev. Dinah Dutta agrees. “I was reassured, and uplifted by the talks, and blessed to meet the other chaplains,” she said.

Prior to her current role, Jenna held the positions of general manager and director of admissions at Ignite Medical Resorts in partnership with the University of Kansas Health System, using her talents to oversee and manage 20 department heads.

The chaplains did spend some time away from the summit for meals and a group activity. PMMA CEO Bruce Shogren joined the chaplains, offering uplifting words about the importance of the chaplains’ work in each of our PMMA communities, which

Jenna has a bachelor’s degree in business marketing from the University of Northern Iowa. She received her administrator license from the State of Kansas in June 2018. Jenna, her husband, Turner, and their daughter, Emilia, are excited to relocate to the Wichita area where they can be closer to family.

Resident, granddaughter enjoy their time together “She’s so witty and funny that we usually end up laughing a lot,” says Jessica Hardy of visits with her grandmother, Mary Lou Kenworthy.

“Usually we laugh about how we know a lot of things or a lot of nothing,” Jessica said. “Or a lot of things about nothing.”

Grandparents Day is on September 11, meant to celebrate the special connection between grandparents and grandchildren. But Jessica doesn’t need a special day. She drops in on Mary Lou, a memory care resident at Wichita Presbyterian Manor, three of four times a week.

“We always have a good time, and over the past few years we’ve gotten closer than we’ve ever been,” Jessica said. “In a weird sort of way, COVID brought us together because I wasn’t doing much and she wasn’t doing much, so we talked on the phone a lot.”

But the bond between grandmother and granddaughter goes back to Jessica’s childhood, when Mary Lou lived a ten-minute walk away from her family’s home in Manhattan, Kansas.

Mary Lou is the reason she drinks coffee, Jessica says, and she has influenced Jessica’s taste in movies and music, too.

“I’ve probably got a lot of my

personality from her and from my mom,” Jessica said.

For many years, they lived in different cities. But when Jessica got a job teaching at Truesdell Middle School in Wichita, she convinced Mary Lou to relocate, too. The two women both moved within a week of each other.

Now Jessica is a 15-minute drive from Presbyterian Manor. The two will often stop at Braum’s for a milkshake, then cruise around listening to 40’s Junction on SiriusXM satellite radio.

They also enjoy watching movies together, just as they did when

Jessica was a child. Mary Lou particularly enjoys the films of Jimmy Stewart and Gene Kelly.

They recently watched “Singin’ in the Rain,” and Jessica and Mary Lou have watched “The Sound of Music” more times than Jessica can count.

“We have a great time and I enjoy hanging out with her and all the folks she lives with as well,” she said.

“Everyone who works here is so nice,” said Jessica, who is on a firstname basis with the Presbyterian Manor staff. “I feel really fortunate that she’s here.” u

New housekeeping supervisor grateful for the opportunity to advance her career In August, Leah Martin was promoted to the role of housekeeping supervisor at Wichita Presbyterian Manor.

Leah joined the community as a member of the housekeeping staff in 2015. Aside from the time she took to care for her son during his treatment for cancer in 2018 and 2019, she has been here ever since.

At first, Leah’s role at Presbyterian Manor was just a job, but it turned out that “It was exactly what I needed,” she said.

“I had never worked at a community like this before,” she said.

Her previous experience was in cleaning private homes. At Presbyterian Manor, Leah got her start in the independent living neighborhood.

“Once everyone started moving into the Westerly, I got to know

everyone,” she said. “I’ve just loved the place ever since.”

The housekeeping staff is blessed to provide a service the residents are always glad to receive, Leah said.

Health care visits aren’t always fun, but everyone appreciates the transformative nature of a freshly cleaned room.

She feels fortunate to have the opportunity to advance Leah Martin in her career, because she couldn’t see herself leaving Presbyterian Manor for another opportunity.

And the best part of her job is the opportunity to continually renew the relationships she has with members of the Presbyterian Manor community.

“A lot of them are my friends now,” she said. “You develop a bond. And over the years, I’ve seen a lot of them move through different levels of care.”

Leah has three sons and three daughters, including a set of 18-yearold triplets who are entering their senior year of high school. Her oldest is 22 years old and her youngest is 9.

In her new role, Leah supervises a staff of about 15 workers, which includes three laundry attendants.

Needless to say, life is “never boring,” Leah reports.

“I’m excited,” she said. “I feel like it’s time because I can work in every

The chaplains say they were grateful for the opportunity to keep growing.

Wichita Presbyterian Manor shares customer service survey responses Wichita Presbyterian Manor continues to seek customer feedback through monthly telephone surveys.

Each month, residents and their representatives are randomly selected to participate in telephone satisfaction surveys conducted by Pinnacle Quality Insight.

The graphic highlights some of the survey results. All scores are given on a 5-point scale, with 5 being the highest score and 1 the lowest score. Between July 2021 and June 2022, Wichita Presbyterian Manor residents and their families gave the community high scores for demonstrating dignity and respect, providing safety and security, as well as good activities.

“I’m happy here,” said one resident,

adding they would recommend the community to others. “I would tell them we have a lot of wonderful people here. The staff does care for us and it’s a nice place to live.”
