Home health nurse brings decades of experience to new role In her new role at Salina Presbyterian Manor, Jerri Phillips helps coordinate medical care for independent living residents. She administers medication, processes doctor’s orders, schedules appointments, and takes vital signs, among other duties. The services she provides help residents live independently for as long as possible. “Anything they need from a health standpoint, I help them navigate,” Jerri said. She began working in the part-time position in March, but Jerri was already familiar with the Jerri Phillips community. She worked with Presbyterian Manor during her tenure as a health-care consultant, and a member of her family moved into the community recently. After graduating from the Asbury Hospital School of Nursing in 1977, Jerri worked in acute care for 30 years. She provided health-care consulting services for 12 years before moving into long-term care. Jerri earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Kansas Wesleyan University and also holds a Master of Business Administration. She holds multiple certifications, including in infection control and dementia. Raised in Geneseo, Kan., a small town on the border of Rice and Ellsworth Counties, Jerri moved to Salina to attend college. She has lived here ever since and raised her family here. She is an avid quilter and enjoys traveling. She also has “eclectic” reading tastes, including books about history. She reads for work, too: A nurse for 45 years, Jerri keeps abreast of the latest advances in the field by reading professional journals. Although her focus is on independent living residents, Jerri is willing to lend her expertise wherever it’s needed. “I’m here to serve the whole building,” she said. u
Congratulations to Virgil Windholz, our April employee of the month. Virgil has served our community as a maintenance tech for almost a year and a half, and he has already received this honor twice! Virgil is from Salina but went to school in Ness City. He has one daughter and three grandchildren. When Virgil joined the Presbyterian Manor team last year, he was looking for a change of pace from his 45-year career in the construction industry. He was already familiar with our community, as he has friends and family members who are residents here. Virgil is a big fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas Jayhawks. He has a hidden talent as an amateur astronomer, and his other hobbies include woodworking and golf. One thing you might not know about Virgil is that he has hit four holesin-one in his lifetime. We feel lucky to have Virgil on our team. Please congratulate him when you see him.u

Salina Presbyterian Manor shares customer service survey responses Salina Presbyterian Manor continues to seek customer feedback through monthly telephone surveys. Each month, residents and their representatives are randomly selected to participate in telephone satisfaction surveys conducted by Pinnacle Quality Insight. The graphic highlights some of the survey results. All scores are given on a 5-point scale, with 5 being the highest score and 1 the lowest score. Between March 2021 and February 2022, Salina Presbyterian Manor residents and their families gave the community high scores for demonstrating dignity and respect, providing safety and security, and addressing personal needs. “We have been very happy with the employees,” said one resident. “They’re friendly, happy to assist us.” “Safety is most important,” said another resident. “This is a safe place to be.” We greatly value the opinions of our residents and their representatives about the care and services we provide, and we encourage them to participate honestly when contacted by Pinnacle Quality Insight. All state and federal confidentiality laws are met in Pinnacle’s service. u

‘Hearts for Hope’ provides encouragement to Presbyterian Manor staff, residents Chaplain Mary Bridges wanted to bless the team at Salina Presbyterian Manor, so she turned to the community for help. Scores of people responded to Mary’s call for “Hearts for Hope” - small enough to slip into a pocket. Made from wood, glass, yarn, and fabric, each heart is meant to remind Presbyterian Manor employees of the support they have from the wider Salina community. “The last couple of years have been tough for our team,” Mary said. “I wanted to do something encouraging.” Her goal was to gather about 150 small hearts, but she ended up with nearly one thousand. The Silver Needles Quilt Guild donated stuffed fabric hearts, and students in the after-school program at First United Methodist Church contributed some, too. One gentleman gave Mary 350 wooden hearts he made with his laser cutter. “It just shows that people care,” Mary said. “They want to help, but

sometimes they don’t know what to do.” At the beginning of the pandemic, volunteers delivered handmade masks. Not only did the masks serve an important purpose, but it felt good to know that people wanted to help, Mary said. She hopes the hearts, which she has distributed to each team member, will perform the same function. Carried in a pocket or purse, they can be squeezed whenever someone needs a reminder to stay hopeful. “The staff seems to like them,” Mary said. “I’ve had several say, ‘I had to use my heart today.’”
The response to the Hearts for Hope project was so overwhelming, it has grown to include more than just staff. When residents are discharged from the PATH (Post-Acute to Home) program, they’ll be sent home with a heart. Mary has given them to members of the grief support group she facilitates, and hearts will be included in welcome bags for new residents. Mary chose a heart for herself, too. It’s lime-green and crocheted by the daughter of a Presbyterian Manor employee. “I like to imagine all of those hearts out in the world,” Mary said. “They represent material gifts from one heart to another.” u
