Family, friends making moving a more pleasant experience When Ann Church made the move from her home in Lawrence to a cottage at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor, she expected a difficult transition.

Celebrating the New Year

As we come into the new year we wonder what its days will hold for us.

We know that life is filled with change, some good and some not, so let’s move into this new year with a hope that is placed in our faith in the one that knows what each of our days will hold.

Our loving God has made a promise to be working all these things together for our good, this doesn’t mean we won't have difficult times, but even when we do He is able to bring His purpose to each situation.

“Of course, moving is difficult, but the manor has made it quite smooth,” Ann said. “I have new carpet and appliances. It’s always difficult to move, but they’ve made it very pleasant.”

I found a wonderful prayer on the iBelieve website that said this:

Ann, who loves to read and is a self-proclaimed Anglophile, has already found a number of activities she’s enjoying in her new home.

“I go to the exercise sessions on Monday and Wednesday morning,” she said. “I’ve signed up to play bridge, and join the bridge group. I also go to the library on Wednesday where I can go in and put in an order for the books I want.”

Her favorite genres are British Literature, along with mysteries.

When I am uncertain, afraid, or needing encouragement, remind me of Your faithfulness in the past. Your Word reminds me that You will provide all my needs according to Your riches in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).

Moving– continued from page 1 Before her husband, James, passed away several years ago, the couple had taken several trips to England to explore their love of all things British.

“We enjoyed visiting cathedrals, museums, especially art museums, and the theater,” Ann said. “We had a lot of fun.”

For more than 40 years, James worked as a professor at the University of Kansas. Ann taught high school in Lawrence for more than 25 years. The couple moved to Lawrence in 1967, after meeting in Wisconsin.

“They helped me, and I was very fortunate to have that much help,” Ann said. “They worked in shifts and would come help when they could.

It really helped. The staff and residents have been very welcoming, and positive. I knew some people before coming. I couldn’t ask for better warmth and welcome. It’s been very pleasant.”

Now that she’s pretty well settled, Ann has an eye toward the future

and what else she might find to enjoy in her new home.

“I’m an avid reader, and I have a book club outside of the manor,” Ann said. “I’ll continue with the book club. I enjoy gardening. I won’t get to do that as much here. But I’ll find plenty of things to do. There are plenty of lovely people here - and I’ll look forward to getting out to do things and going to the theater with people from the manor.” u

“James grew up in Nebraska. He was a midwestern kid,” Ann said.

“I grew up in South Carolina. He was finishing up his doctorate, and I was teaching. We met on a blind date. We were married for 55 years.”

Along with help from the staff and community at LPM, Ann has had the help of her family - a son, daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren who all live in Lawrence.

This helps us look at the new year before us with a true anticipation of what He has in store for us, that we can see the working of His grace and mercy on our behalf and for His glory. We can look to the care of a Loving Father that knows what is best for us even more than we could ask for, we simply put out trust in Him. u

Find Epiphany in this traditional cake recipe In honor of Epiphany on January 6 ((also known as Three Kings’ Day as the Three Kings or Wise Men visited the baby Jesus), here is a delicious recipe for a French cake, the Galette Des Rois. As part of French tradition, a bean or small china feve (favor) is hidden in the cake. The person who finds the feve in his or her slice becomes king or queen for the day u

Servings: 16

¼ cup almond paste ¼ cup white sugar 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened 1 egg ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon almond extract 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 pinch salt 1 (17.25 ounce) package frozen puff pastry, thawed 1 dry kidney bean 1 egg, beaten 1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar for dusting

Directions 1. Place the almond paste into a food processor or blender with about half of the sugar, and process until well blended.

Add the butter and remaining sugar using and process until smooth, then blend in 1 egg, vanilla extract, almond extract, flour and salt. Set aside.

4. Mound the almond filling onto the center of the pastry that is on the baking sheet. Leave about 1 1/2 inch margin at the edges. Press the bean or feve down into the filling. Place the second sheet of pastry on top, and press down the edges to seal. Beat the remaining egg with a fork, and lightly brush onto the top of the galette. Use a knife to make a crisscross pattern in the egg wash, and then prick several small slits in the top to vent steam while baking.

5. Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Do not open the oven until the time is up, as the pastry will not fully puff. Remove from the oven, and dust with confectioners' sugar. Return to the oven, and cook for an additional 12 to 15 minutes, or until the top is a deep golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

6. Lay a golden paper crown gently on top of the cake. This will be used to crown the person who finds the bean or feve. Serve warm or cold.

Make sure to tell everyone about the bean or feve.

2. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Butter a baking sheet or line with parchment paper, and set aside.

3. Roll out one sheet of the puff pastry into an 11-inch square.

New Year’s Resolutions….Did you know?

You may think making New Year’s Resolution is a modern tradition, but it actually goes back more than 4,000 years to the ancient Babylonians. According to history.com, the Babylonians are said to be the first people to make resolutions, mostly making promises to the gods to pay their debts and return any objects they had borrow.

For Christians, the beginning of the new year was an occasion to think about one’s mistakes and resolving to do better in the future.

Today, New Year’s resolutions are no longer a religious tradition. About 45% of Americans make resolutions every year but the odds aren’t in their favor. Here’s why: • 22% of resolutions fail after about a week • 40% of resolutions fail after a month • Only 8% of people will achieve their resolution (according to a study by the University of Scranton in 2021)

The most common resolutions are about selfimprovement: • 23% to live healthier lives • 21% to get happy • 20% to lose weight • 11% to improve their relationships.
