Community band performs at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor The Community Band, an organization founded by Buckskin Joe Hoyt in the spring of 1871, held a special performance for the residents and staff of Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor last month. Made up of about 50 members who are high school age and above, the band holds The Community Band, consisting of 50 members high school age and above, performed on our campus last month. special significance in the state of Kansas. “The band has had several names and various organizational models over the years, but it has been in continuous existence for 151 years—the longest in the state,” said Band Director Chris VanGilder. In addition to its performance at Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor, the Community Band performs at several other local venues including Wilson Park in an attempt to entertain audiences and keep the history of the group alive. “Our goals are to provide free entertainment for the community and preserve the historical significance of this type of music and performances,” said VanGilder. u

Joe and Jolene Thomson were living in Springfield, Mo. when they decided it was time to move closer to family. To help them find a place, the Thomson’s son, Eric, who is a doctor at South Central Kansas Clinic, began looking into assisted living communities which eventually led the couple to Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor. “Eric and our daughter-in-law, Wendy, took a tour of the Manor and then brought us along to take a look and we ended up really liking the place,” said Joe. While moving to a new state can often be difficult, the Thomson’s say that their transition was made easier thanks to the Thomson – continued on page 3
