The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) recently updated the guidance for reporting race and ethnicity in medical and science journals (August 2021). This information updates the language and terminology used in research, education and practice. Some examples include: using racial and ethnic terms as adjectives instead of nouns (Black patients vs Blacks), using "person-first" language (diabetic patients vs diabetics), and avoiding interchanging the terms African American and Black for studies with US patient populations.
