Preceptor Newsletter October 8, 2021 “In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn.”

At the end of your rotation, have your student write a letter to the next student. The letter can include: How to be successful on the rotation Tips, tricks and pearls for the students (everything from parking advice and where the best coffee is to tips on working up and presenting patients) Time management information Information about any ongoing projects that were initiated There is usually time during the first couple days that the student is left alone and has time to review the letter.

Preceptor can prepare the student that everything may not make sense today. The student is advised to read the letter again after the first week.

My favorite rotation of my pharmacy school career so far was my first APPE rotation. It was at an independent retail and compounding pharmacy. My preceptor was Dr. Russell. On day one, she, as well as other pharmacists and technicians in the pharmacy, welcomed me with open arms. I immediately felt that I was part of the family at the pharmacy. She wanted my experience on rotation to develop my pharmacy skills, develop my role as a team player, and challenge me like no rotation had before. This rotation did exactly that. During my month at the pharmacy, I compounded medications for an abundance of patients, both humans and animals. I worked in the retail workflow, administered vaccinations, worked on MTMs with patients, called patients to set goals for their medical care, and worked on multiple projects. Each day of rotation had purpose, and Dr. Russell ensured me that every day as a pharmacist is important in making sure patients are getting the care that they need.

Dr. Russell looked at every experience as a learning opportunity, and encouraged me to do the same. She took every opportunity to interact with and teach patients. She teaches wellness classes on Fridays to provide education to patients of the pharmacy. I was able to teach one of these classes with one of my fellow students on rotation. She gave us unique opportunities to engage patients, and was always eager to explore new areas. She included all of her students in meetings and phone calls, so that we could experience what she does on a daily basis. She was open to answering any questions that we had, and wanted to make sure that we left the rotation with a firm understanding of her experiences. She told us that “as a pharmacist, there is a lot that you bring to the table, and you should be confident in that fact.” This statement has stuck with me since that rotation, and it is a reminder to me to be confident in myself as a professional. She is the best preceptor I have had to this point, and she is a big reason why I enjoyed my time on her rotation so much.

I do have a few tips for preceptors on how to make a rotation enjoyable and beneficial from a student perspective. Engage your students. As a student, it is sometimes difficult to pinpoint exactly where to fit in each day. On some rotations, I have felt like more of a burden than a helping hand, and this has limited my ability to learn on these rotations. Encourage questions, and answer them with a conversation. And finally, set expectations early. As a student, it is much easier to navigate a rotation and put forward my best effort when I know exactly what my preceptor was expecting. These three things will greatly improve students’ experiences on rotation, and will help us develop into better pharmacists down the road.

Early identification of at-risk students was accomplished through midpoint evaluations and referral to the office of experiential education (OEE) for development in the following areas: Professionalism Time management Drug information Communication Therapeutic/drug knowledge The experiential director helped the student create a personalized, individualized plan for success. Over 3 academic years, 36 students were referred and 35 students were able to graduate on time.

Examples of success plans: Oral and written quizzes for Top 200 drugs Mock counseling sessions Drug information questions Oral and written assessments on therapeutics topics Simulated "mini" cases with complex patients A referral and monitoring program by the OEE assisted preceptors in developing students and helping on-time graduation rates.

National Association of Boards of Pharmacy Meeting ​Dr. Talisha Ratliff recently presented at the NABP District 3 Meeting in Hilton Head Island, SC. Her presentation was titled "MAT, Naloxone, and Me" and included information about the academic detailing used over the past year with students teaching preceptors about naloxone use.

APPE Updates Availability for the 2022-2023 academic year was sent on 9/20/21.

If your IPPE or APPE student plans to participate, our office considers these excused absences (as well as other state and national conferences); however, excusing the student from any amount of time from your

IPPE Updates Fall Break is October 11-12. This will affect P2 students on IPPEs. Students on Fall-2 IPPE will end on 11/16/21, with this off week built in to the schedule. This is the information that was shared with students on 10/8: Taking the Break: If you’ve planned to honor the break, that’s great too!! However, preceptors don’t typically consider our academic calendar in their planning so they may not be aware of the holiday. Unless you are absolutely certain that your preceptor is NOT expecting you on Tuesday, please send him/her a reminder TODAY! Your Fall-2 session will end November 16 as indicated on your IPPE schedule.

Upcoming Important Dates October 8 - Deadline for APPE Availability for May 2022-April 2023 October 12 - Capstone Presentations ALL P4 students are required to return to campus for their capstone presentations.

This is a scheduled absence; therefore, the student is not required to make up the actual hours missed. However, he/she is responsible for completion of all activities and objectives of the rotation.

October 12 - Women Pharmacist Day October 17-23 - National Pharmacy Week October 19 - National Pharmacy Technician Day November 1 - Master Preceptor Applications Due Many of the preceptors at PCSP go above and beyond what is required of them and we want to recognize their efforts. PCSP has a credentialing process to increase the recognition of our exceptional preceptors.

To become eligible for the Master Preceptor level, the preceptor should submit all materials and CV to the OEE by November 1 each year. Master Preceptors are recommended for adjunct faculty status in January and recognized at the White Coat Ceremony in August. More details here.

ASHP Preceptors Conference

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists will hold the annual National Pharmacy Preceptors Conference virtually on October 21-22.

The sessions include creating a positive learning environment, strategies for helping unmotivated students, utilizing the enneagram personality test with students and learners, and tools to help students build critical thinking.
