ARCHITECTURE

Prerna Shrestha

Being someone who was interested in arts and designwork, architecture has always been a part of me. The ability to bring your imagination to reality is what I enjoy the most, especially when the designs actually serves the people its intended use. I vividly enjoy my time in rendering and trying out digital illustrations.

Zoo Design

The project is related to the redevelopment of the only zoo in Nepal, the Central Zoo, Jawalakhel, Lalitpur. The zoo lies in the center of the city covering an area of about 118 ropani. This redevelopment is based on the improvement of the artificial habitats of the animals to make them feel like home. It mainly focuses on the welfare of the animals with proper caring and also to make them more active by introducing recreational activities.

The current enclosures provided to the animals were not even of minimum standard. Hence, the redevelopment provides enclosures designed specifically to the particular animals with standard enclosure size. The concept for the arrangement of the animal enclosures is mainly based on the human interest and their psychology. Along with the enclosures also stands some refreshment and children play area to engage them more.

In toady’s urban context, apartments are a great resolution in reducing urban sprawl. Located in Sitapaila chowk, this apartment accomodates about 200 compartments with all the required facilities and services.

The design features a terraced roofing that provides a personal terrace for the compartment on each floor generating a sense of connectivity among the proplr as well as maintaining the visual privacy, creating a buffer between two adjacent terraces

The Concept is derived from the sense of connectiveness. Living in the city has made people more self oriented whereas apartments are a medium to socialize many groups of people to live together. Hence the staggered form helps in allowing the natural light to seggregate reducing the rigidness of the structure.

FORM DEVELOPMENT

Landscape Design

This landscape project features the designing of a neglected open space in a traditional town of Bhuikhel, Swayambhu. The ground was previously used as a football ground with no proper facilities and little to no visitors, Here, the design encourages the involvement of people from every age group with facilities like outdoor gym, basketball court, dedicated footsal ground and relaxing green spaces.

The creation of this urban oasis also expresses the need of permeable ground surfaces to recharge the ground water and the importance of green open spaces for relaxation and recreational activities.

This interior project was actually the redevelopment of our college library. The design is the influence of the Industrial Style that is characterised by the use of materials in their natural state. it mainly embraces exposed architectural elements such as pipes, wood and metal infused together, concrete face and raw brick faced walls. Here, the industrial style helps the student to give a sense of calmness and purity. the true form of the materials give theor own aesthetic that can atract many students to visit the library.

The chair used in the design are the popular Eames Shell chairs and customized study tables. For the efficient use of the limited space, the reception is infused with a built in book shelf that also acts as a boundary of the reception.

This convention center is located in tahachal, Kathmandu. The figure above is the abstract sketch of how the convention center is to rest on the divine contours. The design is inspired from the flexibilty of a snakes body so in turn to preserve the land contours, hence the whole structure is supported on pitotis which also creates a public realm below it. As it is a commercial complex, equal importnace is also given to the design of public spaces inside the complex as well as the outside. The parametric roof on the top also gives a dynamic character to the organic structure allowing the light into the complex via a skylight at the center.

Residence Design Studio

With the environmental and financial constraints that we face today, residence design has come a long way. This project focuses on putting together efficient and innovative design enhancing the workability of the spaces and comfort of living. The site is situated in the up growinh residential area, Sainbu, Baisipati, Lalitpur. The site is in the midst of residential area surrounded by bungalows with a 5m access road on the east. The design of the house is in reflection to the profession of the owners, a basketball player and an architect. The circular windows and semi-circular openings help create a unique yet sophisticated design.

The concrete finish on the exterior provides a sense of calmness and the enhances the identity of the material itself. The contrast between the concrete and the oak wood textures is something i was inspired by one of the Master architect Louis I. Kahn, whose salient feature was the use of teak wood and concrete as a contrasting material.
