emalia’s proposal came about in 2005, when a young entrepreneur from Bilbao, María Ángeles Martínez, moved
to Mexico for professional reasons. There she got to know the costume jewellery and gemstone market in depth. Interested in this market, she decided to train with Mexican craftspeople in the world of designing and hand-crafting necklaces, bracelets, rings and pendants. And in 2006, back home in the Basque Country, she decided to start up a retail business to subsequently, in the summer of 2007, founding Gemalia, the first wholesaler of costume jewellery components in the Basque Countryo, concentrating primarily on leather (over 500 references) European produced silver plated zamak (more than 1,000 references), amongst them the presence of round or flat cords stands out, also those of liquorice, braided, of hide and snakeskin, of suede from Cancun and kangaroo.
