here are so many beautiful projects for us to create that patchwork “tests our creativity, ability, and ingenuity to
combine colours and fabric patches. Bedcovers for grownups or babies are the favourites among patchwork fans for, as they blend well with home décor in our bedrooms, they empower the warmth of our homes”, states Cristina Alves. Soft, feminine style Liberty floral prints, cottage prints, tiny flowers…what are the recommended prints? “In order to follow the romantic spirit the best will be delicate dots, stripes, Vichy or geometrical shapes, combined with flowers. For it is all reminiscent of the Vintage touch, and the most suitable colours will be peach, pink, pastel green ,lemon yellow, light blue, cherry red, chocolate, white or cream”. We ask our interviewee about designers signing these fabrics by Coats and she explains, “Our FreeSpirit range designed by Heather Bailey finds inspiration in fruit, flowers, animals and pastries while Dena Fishbein, an awarded illustrator of children’s books, uses soft pastel colours in her creations. Tanya Whelan loves romantic roses and Valori Wells uses a main ingredient: her imagination. Verna Mosquera’s work is filled with matching flowers, dots and stripes and Amy Butler brings the fresh, bright floral patterns that are perfect for that romantic look we seek”. Patchwork and geography “Patchwork is popular all around Spain. Some old texts from La Rioja reveal the technique was already here in the XVIIth century. In Europe, patchwork is most popular in Holland and England. Patchwork awakens a passion that makes you unstoppable, and major textile factories continue to innovate while specialized magazines and books continue to maintain alive the interest of patchwork fans, so enthusiastic about learning new techniques”, Cristina Alves comments at the end of our interview.
