They distribute his products in Hungary, so we had to mix some elements from this relationship into the interior. The main plans for the brief were to be industrial but cozy, and let the customers feel the sense of their community built around this coffee. This is their second cafe in the city, so some of the elements were determined before. As a focus point, we planned a shelf - resembling a living room - it presents the products, creates a place for objects and pictures connected to the family. The top of the shelf displays the most important sentence by the plantation owner, “old people say that God’s hand is on the valleys of Lourdes”.

HOUSE EXTENSION ZEBEGÉNY

The existing house was built in the 70s in Zebegény, with a fantastic view to the Danube. The new owners would like to convert it from a holiday house to a home, so the original living area isn’t enough anymore. Our goal was to save as much part of the existing structure as we can, and find a secondary material for the facades, which does not compete with the original limestone blocks. The additional structures are made of CLT panels, with a burned slat facade /shou sugi ban/. Following the original building forms with the CLT walls, we had the opportunity to add a terrace in the direction of the breathtaking view.

BALATONFÜRED

The Hungarian OTP bank owns a hotel in Balatonfüred, located in the center of the northern shore of lake Balaton, but he building has become obsolete. The owners would like to replace it with a contemporary building that contains only rooms with panoramic view of the lake, a small wellness section, a wing for conferences, and a hangar for sailing moths with a small workshop in a separate building. Near the lake the natural environment is unique, so it is important to keep the green space untouched. Therefore the building gets an L-shape. To make the rooms equal in sight, the rooms’ axis is not right-angled to the structure.

SUMMER HOUSE BALATONFÜRED

The site, located to the north from Balatonfüred was used for harvesting grapes. The sloping southern hillside was modified, plane parcells were shaped with local limestone walls. In the 60s, two prefabricated summer houses were built here, but by now, they have lost their comfort. A new building was erected instead, with strong connections to the existing limestone walls. It seems as if it was always part of the walls, but with the turn of the axis it shows separation too. The shelter is enough for one resident, who can enjoy the amazing view of Balaton and Tihany directly from the living room.

OLD TOWN - COMPETITION

ÉRD

The competition to develop the Danube bank of Érd included the entire district of the old town from industrial areas to the abandoned brick factory. According to the functional needs, the area could be sliced into several action sites. The northern parts are optimal for industrial and entertaining investments. In connection with the latter, the existing sport courts could grow into a sports center providing various possibilities for the inhabitants. Along the dam, there are many abandoned objects in different scales, such as the Turkish minaret, the dam guard house, the cellar system of the destroyed palace, and the remaining buildings of the old brick factory. These could become great attractions of Érd. The holm in the middle is a natural gift giving the chance to explore the local ecosystem.

SAXLEHNER PALACE

BUDAPEST

Andrássy street is the most representative part of Budapest, however some of the palaces were abandoned for years. The eclectic-styled palace under number 3 was built for András Saxlehner, the most successful alkaline water producer of the 19th century. The interior design was made for a competition. We used a copper frame to enclose the storage furniture and to create a new ceiling with panels displaying contemporary blueprints of the most famous Hungarian buildings from the age of the construction of the palace. The shower and the washbasin were placed into the room, the shower was covered by a copper wall with an opening that could enlarge and separate the “bathroom”.

Urban Design Research for Children’s Mobility

BUDAPEST

„The intersectoral research project on children’s mobi- lity with the use of social design tools aims to discover how to make urban mobility for children safer and more attractive through placemaking. The research tackles how social design might facilitate children’s (age 8-13) physical and mental safety and visibility regarding the inclusivity of public places and mobility formats in order to mitigate traffic and along with the climate crisis. The research among others uses co-creational data collection, action and observatory research, and a design prototype as a tool to focus on the specific challenges raised by the target group.”

BLAVATO KHER FINAL DIPLOMA PROJECT 2019

In the first year of university, we had the opportunity to join a social project organized by MOME Ecolab, a sustainability focused workshop. We manufactured small-scaled wooden structures in the yard of the elementary school of Bódvaszilas, which is located in one of the poorest and most disadvantaged areas of Hungary. I have participated in this workshop for five years - three years of building and workshops with the kids, and another two with the same class focusing on their future with different creative exercises. Unfortunately, the pandemic cut our ways to Bódvaszilas, but by now, our children have left the elementary school, and I hope that we could help them think a little bit wider and braver about their skills and abilities.

Year by year I was more interested in the circumstances of these children as they opened and spoke about the situation they live in.

The Hungarian kindergartens and elementary schools are not able to compensate for the disadvantages caused by different cultural backgrounds. Religious organizations have more success since the NGOs were jeopardized.

In my thesis I examined the children’s relationship with their environment using their mind maps of their village. The drawings visualize the social network around the children, make the forms of use clear, and assign feelings to places. The resource showed the possible locations for a new community center established for children and their families to open a way for resilience.

elements of the village that show importance on the mind maps

The shape of the building is based on square houses, the most common house form in the rural areas of Hungary. The ground floor contains separable workshop spaces, while the first floor is a free playing space for the children, and if necessary a temporary accommodation for a family. The structure is made of timber lattice beams covered by HDF sheets. Everybody is able to build them on the ground with a screwdriver and manual saw. Storage parts are placed between the vertical beams making the structure stronger.

typical Hungarian village sight transformation

The insulation is air injected, made from wood fiber for sustainability. The entrance facade could function as a gallery, showing the work inside, using the steel cover’s characteristics.

In the exterior, the HDF sheets remain naked to give users the opportunity to decorate and color it the way they want.

In the best case scenario, the community and the building could be the stepping stone to a resilient and successful life full of possibilities and confidence for the children, while they keep the origins of gypsy culture.
