Eine Schlange verführte bekanntlich schon Adam und Eva und auch im Engadin können Besucher seit jeher dieser Faszination erliegen. Gewissermassen einer Engadiner Nessie, der Maloja­schlange nämlich. In dieser Ausgabe lesen Sie über dieses seltene Wetterphänomen, das zum einzig­artigen Klima in der Region beiträgt.

Nicht mit Schlangen und auch nicht mit Cleopatra befasst sich unser Artikel über Ägypten.

Wir berichten von Anton Robert Badrutt, dem einst jungen Direktor des weltberühmten Hotel Palace in Luxor. In den Goldenen Zwanzigern logierte die gesamte archäologische Gesellschaft inklusive Lord Carnarvon in diesem geschichtsträchtigen Hotel. Die legendäre Gastfreundschaft der Familie Badrutt hinterliess folglich nicht nur in St. Moritz, sondern auch im exotischen Ägypten ihre Spuren. Sie wurde somit gewissermassen «a family for all seasons». A propos Saison: Die vergangene Wintersaison konnten wir mit einer erfreulichen Auszeichnung ab­schliessen. Der begehrte «Condé Nast Traveller Readersʼ Choice Award» in der Kategorie «Best Ski-Hotel» ging an das Badruttʼs Palace Hotel.

Wir sind sehr stolz auf diese neue Auszeichnung, welche aber ohne Sie, unsere Gäste, und ohne unser motiviertes Personal nicht möglich geworden wäre. Wir danken Ihnen ganz herzlich hierfür und hoffen schon jetzt, dass wir Sie auch in der kommenden Wintersaison wieder für uns begeistern können.

Nun heisst es aber erst einmal, den Sommer in vollen Zügen zu geniessen.

Anche d’estate, un soggiorno al Badrutt’s Palace Hotel è sinonimo di divertimento, relax e variegati piaceri. Accolti con un’ospitalità divenuta proverbiale e circondati dalle attenzioni di collaboratori attenti, i nostri ospiti sono stimolati ogni giorno a scoprire qualche cosa di nuovo. Qui, l’aria frizzante di montagna – divenuta famosa come »aria di champagne« – la invita ai piaceri semplici della vita, al riposo o – semplicemente – al dolce far niente. Chi passeggia tre le vie di Sankt Moritz e le sue eleganti boutique non ha che l’imbarazzo della scelta in tema di shopping. Del resto, forse già sfogliando le prossime pagine troverà l’oggetto del suo prossimo acquisto in via Serlas.

Everyone knows about the serpent which once tempted Adam and Eve and here in the Engadin, visitors have always been able to succumb to this fascination too. The Engadin has its own Nessie – not a serpent or monster hidden in the lake, but instead a rare weather phenomenon, namely the Maloja serpent. In this issue you can read about this weather condition which contributes to the exceptional climate in this region.

Al fascino del Nessie engadinese, comunemente detto »Serpente del Maloja«. In questo numero la informiamo su questo singolare fenomeno meteorologico, che rende unico il clima della nostra regione.

Our feature on Egypt may not be about serpents or even Cleopatra but rather a report on Anton Robert Badrutt, once the young Director of the world famous Hotel Palace in Luxor. During the Roaring Twenties, the whole archaeological community stayed in this hotel steeped in history, including Lord Carnarvon. The legendary hospitality of the Badrutt family has left its mark not only in St. Moritz but also in exotic Egypt. They were in a way »a family for all seasons«. On the subject of seasons, last winter season we gained a very pleasing award. The coveted »Condé Nast Traveller Readersʼ Choice Award« in the category »Best Ski Hotel« went to Badruttʼs Palace Hotel.

Il nostro articolo sull’Egitto non parla né di Cleopatra né di serpenti, bensì di Anton Robert Badrutt, a suo tempo Junior Director del Palace Hotel di Luxor, famoso nel mondo. In questo hotel ricco di storia, nei dorati anni venti soggiornò l’intera associazione archeologica, compreso Lord Carnarvon. La leggendaria ospitalità della famiglia Badrutt non ha quindi lasciato tracce solo a Sankt Moritz, ma anche nell’esotico Egitto – »una famiglia per tutte le stagioni«, come si suol dire. A proposito di stagioni: alla fine dello scorso inverno abbiamo ricevuto un’ importante onoreficenza: l’ambito »Condé Nast Traveller Readersʼ Choice Award« per la categoria »Best Ski Hotel« è stato assegnato al Badruttʼs Palace Hotel.

T h e L u x u ry o f N at u r e S i m p ly L u x u r y Zeit haben, mit der Natur eng verbunden sein, zu sich selbst finden und die Elektrizität weitestgehend ausschalten – das bedeutet für die meisten Menschen heutzutage LUXUS. Das Badrutt’s Palace Hotel greift diesen Gedanken während der Sommersaison 2014 auf und bietet seinen Gästen die Möglichkeit, sich während Ihres Aufenthalts für eine Nacht in die abgelegene Varusch-Hütte zu verabschieden. Idyllisch am Eingang des Schweizer Nationalparks gelegen, welcher 2014 sein 100-jähriges Jubiläum feiert, bietet die urige Unterkunft verschiedene Möglichkeiten.

Ganz nach diesem Leitsatz begleiten sie den Küchenchef der ‹Chesa Veglia›, Andrea Panatti, um 6.00 Uhr in der Früh beim Fischfang und erfahren so Einiges an fachlichem Insider-Wissen. Nach zahlreichen Tipps und einem erlebnisreichen Vormittag schlüpft Panatti anschliessend in die Koch-Uniform und überrascht seine Angelfreunde am Abend mit einer schmackhaften Zubereitung des gemeinsamen Fischfangs.

This traditional accommodation is located at the entrance to the Swiss National Park, which is celebrating its 100 year anniversary in 2014 and as such offers a range of possibilities. The hut is only accessible on foot and its remote location and simple way of life make it ideal for a short stay to enjoy some self-reflection and relaxed walks in the surrounding area. Children will also find it exciting to sit on the terrace, sample some regional culinary treats and watch the magnificent animals of Graubünden in the wild. If you are lucky, you might even see a marmot, ibex or deer!

»The early fisherman catches the fish« is the ideal motto for those guests who do not fancy isolating themselves completely during their summer holidays but want to experience the seemingly untouched mountain lakes of the Engadin in the morning. Based on this motto, the chef of the ›Chesa Veglia‹ Andrea Panatti will accompany guests for some early morning fishing at 6.00 am, providing some expert insider knowledge. After sharing his tips and enjoying an adventure-packed morning with guests, Panatti slips back into his chef’s uniform to impress his angling friends in the evening with some delicious fish from their joint fishing session.

» D ownton Pa l ac e « D ER V ER B OTENE AFTERNOON TEA & EINE FAS H ION S H O W MIT MO D E , D IE « OUT» IST Es war einmal das späte 19. Jahrhundert … und wie war es damals im Badrutt’s Palace? Wie haben sich die Gäste gekleidet? Was haben sie gegessen und wie haben sie ihren Nachmittag verbracht?

Am 5. Juli 2014 wird das Badruttʼs Palace Hotel zurück in die Vergangenheit wandeln und seine Gäste einladen zu einem «verbotenen Absinth-Afternoon Tea». Absinth galt im späten 19. Jahrhundert als alkoholisches Getränk des «niederen Volks» und war keineswegs für die Adelsgesellschaft bestimmt. Als Einstimmung in die Zeit von damals findet auf dem «Catwalk» der ‹Le Grand Hall› eine Modenshow der Belle Epoque statt – inklusive unterhaltsamer Erläuterungen der, heute etwas ungewöhnlich wirkenden, Unterbekleidung.

Einige der anwesenden Gäste haben zudem die Möglichkeit, sich als Highlight mit einem der handgeschneiderten Outfits der frühen Jahre einzukleiden und dieses am Abend zum «Downton Palace Historical Dinner» auszuführen. Bei der nicht ganz alltäglichen Anprobe erhalten die weiblichen Gäste beim Anlegen des Korsetts hilfreiche Tipps, wie sich die jeweilige Dame mit den entsprechenden Accessoires zu bewegen und verhalten hat.

Durchgeführt wird der Workshop am Vormittag unter dem fachmännischen Blick der aus dem Fernsehen bekannten Society- und Königshof-Expertin Liz Brewer. Ausgewählte Gäste des «Absinth-Afternoon Teas» werden die Gelegenheit haben am Abend die handgeschneiderten Kleider der Belle Epoque zum «Downton Palace Historical Dinner» auszuführen.

How did the guests dress? What did they eat and how did they spend the afternoon?

On 5th July 2014, Badruttʼs Palace Hotel will be taking a trip back into the past and inviting guests to a »prohibited Absinthe Afternoon Tea«.

During the late 19th century, Absinthe was regarded as a »lower class« alcoholic drink and something not meant for the aristocracy. To get guests in the mood, a fashion show from the Belle Époque era will be held on the »catwalk« in ›Le Grand Hall‹, including some entertaining explanations of the undergarments which appear rather unusual today!

Il 5 luglio 2014 il Badrutt’s Palace Hotel farà un viaggio nel passato e inviterà i suoi ospiti a un »proibito Absinthe-Afternoon Tea«.

L’assenzio nel tardo diciannovesimo secolo era considerata la bevanda del »popolo inferiore« e non era in alcuno caso destinata all’alta società. Per entrare nell’atmosfera di allora sul »Catwalk« del ›Le Grand Hall‹ si terrà uno spettacolo sulla Belle Epoque – che sarà accompagnato da divertenti spiegazioni sulla biancheria intima che veniva indossata all’epoca e che oggi è divenuta un po’ inusuale.

Some of the guests will have the chance to try on the hand-made outfits of the past and wear them to the »Downton Palace Historical Dinner« in the evening as a special highlight. While receiving assistance with doing up their corsets, female guests will be provided with helpful tips as to how women should wear the various accessories and conduct themselves.

Qualcuno degli ospiti presenti ha inoltre la possibilità di diventare l’attrazione indossando uno degli abiti tipici fatti a mano di quegli anni e di esibirlo la sera in occasione del »Downton Palace Historical Dinner«.

The idea for this exceptional »Downton Palace« is based on the popular »Downton Abbey« TV series, the script for which was written

by Oscar winner Julian Fellowes. This internationally successful series always starts with the Downton Abbey property which is owned by the aristocratic English family, the Crawleys and offers plenty of scope for power, intrigue and relationships. Unlike modern-day soap operas, the series also highlights unusual aspects relating to the historic events of the early 20th century.

L’inusuale evento »Downton Palace« è stato creato prendendo spunto dall’amata serie televisiva »Downton Abbey« messa in scena dal vincitore dell’Oscar Julian Fellowes. Il punto di partenza della serie di successo è sempre il podere Downton Abbey, che fa parte del patrimonio familiare della famiglia nobile inglese Crawley e offre argomenti per giochi di potere, intrighi e storie di rapporti.

In addition to the many rules governing style and conduct, participants will also hear some amusing anecdotes from everyday life in the royal household. The crowning finale of this educational morning is a culinary premiere by Executive Chef Mauro Taufer: to mark the historic »Downton Palace« event, he and his team will be preparing a traditional palace menu from 1902 in the kitchens.

The dishes will be presented on original crockery from the late 19th century which was recently discovered in the hotel archives.

The world’s largest reptile … and a bizarre wind Weltgrösstes Reptil und skurriler Wind Das Engadin, das grösste und längste ganzjährig besiedelte Alpen-Hochtal, gilt als Vorgarten zum Paradies. Seine Naturschönheiten sind weltberühmt und medial omnipräsent. Doch auch bei einem solchem Füllhorn voller Naturpretiosen gehen zwei Phänomene beinahe vergessen: Die Malojaschlange und der Malojawind.

Das Vorkommen von Drachen in den Alpen hat sich bereits vor Jahrhunderten als völlige Fantasievorstellung erwiesen.

Trotzdem existiert im Engadin heute noch ein Mammutreptil, nämlich die grösste Riesenschlange der ganzen Welt. Es erstaunt, dass keiner der Kurdirektoren jemals auf die Idee gekommen ist, sie ins Guinnessbuch der Rekorde eintragen zu lassen.

The Engadin is the largest and longest high Alpine valley to be populated all year round and is regarded as the front garden of paradise. Its natural beauty is renowned throughout the world and frequently featured in the media. However two phenomena should not be forgotten in this cornucopia of natural treasures: the Maloja serpent and Maloja wind.

The existence of dragons in the Alps was proven to be pure figment of the imagination many centuries ago. However Engadin is still home to a mammoth reptile which is the largest giant snake in the world. It is astonishing that none of the destination managers have ever tried to enter it in the Guinness Book of Records!

Il serpente più grande del mondo e il vento più scurrile del mondo L’Engadina, la più grande e lunga valle alpina di alta quota abitata tutto l’anno, è considerata il giardino alle porte del Paradiso. Le sue bellezze della natura sono famose in tutto il mondo e presenti in tutti i media. Però due fenomeni vengono quasi dimenticati anche in una tale abbondanza di meraviglie della natura: Il serpente del Maloja e il vento del Maloja.

Già secoli fa è stato provato che la presenza di draghi sulle Alpi non è che il frutto di pura fantasia. Ciononostante in Engadina esiste ancora un rettile di Mammut, cioè il serpente gigante più grande di tutto il mondo. È sorprendente che nessun direttore di casa di cura abbia mai avuto l’idea di farlo inserire nel Guinnes dei primati.

Die Rede ist von der Malojaschlange, einem – neben dem Malojawind – spektakulären Naturphänomen im Engadiner Luftraum. Es handelt sich dabei um extrem langgezogene Wolkenbänke in Form einer überdimensionalen, kilometerlangen albinotischen Boa constrictor, die im Zeitlupentempo die Talhänge entlang, oder – falls das Kondensationsniveau unterhalb von Maloja liegt –, über den Talboden hinweg talauswärts gleitet.

The reptile in question is the Maloja serpent, a spectacular natural phenomenon of the Engadin’s lofty heights, alongside the Maloja wind. The serpent is formed of very long banks of cloud in the shape of an over-sized and kilometre-long albino boa constrictor, weaving its way along the sides of the valleys in slow-motion or sliding out of the valley bottom when the condensation level falls below Maloja.

Stiamo parlando del Serpente del Maloja, che insieme al Vento del Maloja è uno spettacolare fenomeno naturale nello spazio aereo engadinese. Si tratta di un banco di nebbia molto allungato dalla forma di un gigantesco Boa Costrictor albino lungo chilometri, che striscia al rallentatore lungo i pendii della valle, oppure, se il livello di condensazione si trova sotto il Maloja, sopra il fondo della valle.

Im Gegensatz zum Malojawind, der nur in der warmen Jahreszeit und bei schönem Wetter in Erscheinung tritt, kann die Malojaschlange im Sommer und im Winter, bei Schön- und Schlechtwetter, beobachtet werden. Typische Schlangenwitterung sind grossräumige Schlechtwetterlagen mit Südwestwind. Im oberen Talabschnitt macht sich die Malojaschlange aber auch häufig gegen Abend bei Malojawind bemerkbar.

Unlike the Maloja wind, which only makes an appearance in good weather and during the warm seasons, the Maloja serpent can be observed in summer and winter and both in good and bad weather. Typical serpent weather includes extensive adverse weather conditions with a south-westerly wind. In the evening, the Maloja serpent often makes itself known in the upper part of the valley in the form of the Maloja wind.

Contrariamente al vento del Maloja che si alza solamente durante la bella stagione e con il bel tempo, il Serpente del Maloja può essere ammirato sia d’estate sia d’inverno, con il bello e il brutto tempo. Il serpente si manifesta principalmente in condizioni di brutto tempo con vento da sud ovest. Nella parte superiore della valle il Serpente del Maloja è però spesso visibile verso sera con il vento del Maloja.

Riesenschlangen sind bekanntlich nicht giftig, aber unheimlich kräftig im Würgegriff. So brachte es 1974 eine Malojaschlange zustande, die Herrenabfahrt der Ski­weltmeisterschaften von St. Moritz nachhaltig zu stören und das hochkarätige Organisationskomitee schachmatt zu setzen.

In 1974, the Maloja serpent caused lasting disruption to the men’s Downhill Ski World Championships in St. Moritz and declared checkmate on the high-calibre organisational committee.

È risaputo che i serpenti giganti non sono velenosi ma che possiedono una morsa estremamente forte. Il Serpente del Maloja nel 1974 riuscì a disturbare continuamente i campionati mondiali di sci di Sankt Moritz, mettendo fuori combattimento il famoso comitato organizzatorio.

Die Einheimischen kennen die Malojaschlange bestens. Trotzdem scheinen sie ihre zoologischen Kenntnisse etwas anpassen zu müssen: Die Engadiner Wetterregel «La serp da Malögia porta plövgia» (Die Malojaschlange bringt Regen) muss nicht immer zutreffen, da das Maloja-Riesenreptil Regen und Sonne liebt.

Sie gehört somit in die Kategorie jener Bauern­ regeln, die sich unter dem Schmunzel­prinzip «Das Wetter bleibt schön – ausser es regnet …» subsummieren lassen.

Despite this, they seem to have to adapt their zoological knowledge from time to time: the Engadin rule-of-thumb for weather is »La serp da Malögia porta plövgia« (the Maloja serpent brings rain) but this does not always apply because the Maloja serpent loves rain and sunshine. The saying is therefore similar to those tongue-in-cheek farming rules such as »The weather will stay fine – except for when it rains …«

Gli indigeni conoscono benissimo il Serpente del Maloja. Ciononostante sembra che debbano adattare un po’ le loro conoscenze zoologiche: La regola meteorologica engadinese »La serp da Malögia porta plövgia« (Il Serpente del Maloja porta pioggia) non necessariamente è sempre giusta, visto che il gigantesco rettile del Maloja ama la piogga e il sole. Quindi appartiene alla categoria di regole contadine riassumibili nel divertente detto »Il tempo rimane bello – a meno che non piova …«

Ein typisches Merkmal grösserer Alpentäler sind an sonnigen Tagen die Berg- und Talwinde, von denen es schon in der Schule hiess: «Tagsüber streichen sie bergwärts, nachts dagegen talwärts.» Motor solch tageszeitlich wehender Winde ist die Sonne.

Bescheint sie die Talflanken, steigt die erwärmte Luft. Die das Tal himmelwärts in Form von Hangwinden verlassenden Luftmassen werden vom Tal­ausgang her durch horizontal nachs­trömende Luft ersetzt.

Diesen Nachschub besorgt der Talwind. Nachts ist es umgekehrt. Die abgekühlte Tal­luft sinkt und fliesst als Bergwind tal­auswärts.

On sunny days, one typical feature of the larger Alpine valleys are the mountain and valley winds. At school, children are taught: »They blow uphill during the day and downhill during the night«. The sun is the driving force behind this ever-shifting wind pattern. When the sun shines on the sides of the valleys, the warm air rises. These masses of air rise up from the valleys in the form of slope winds and are then replaced by air moving in horizontally from the end of the valley. This replenishment of the air creates the uphill valley wind. At night, the process is reversed. The cooled valley air falls and flows back out of the valley as a downhill mountain wind.

Una caratteristica tipica delle valli alpine più grandi è il vento montano e il vento a valle, di cui già scuola si imparava che: »Di giorno soffia verso montagna, ma di notte verso valle« a mettere in moto questi venti diurni è il sole. Se splende sui fianchi della valle, l’aria riscaldata sale. Le masse di aria che si alzano verso il cielo dalla valle sotto forma di vento sui pendii una volta usciti dalla valle vengono sostituiti da aria che fluisce orizzontalmente. Quest’aria provoca il vento da valle. Di notte si assiste all’effetto contrario. L’aria fresca della valle scende ed esce dalla valle sotto forma di vento montano.

Man nennt das auch die Atmung des Gebirges – mit täglich einem Atemzug, einatmen tagsüber, ausatmen nachts.

Zwischen Tag- und Nachtwind vollzieht sich der Richtungswechsel gewöhnlich einige Stunden nach Sonnenaufgang beziehungsweise nach Sonnenuntergang.

Der tagsüber aktive Talwind nimmt an Stärke rasch zu und erreicht sein Maximum am frühen Nachmittag. Der nächtliche Bergwind ist deutlich schwächer und weht weniger regelmässig als der Talwind.

Doch keine Regel ohne Ausnahme! Das Wetter­phänomen des Oberengadins, der Malojawind, ist solch eine magische Spielerei der Natur. Denn er streicht nicht wie andere Talwinde bergwärts, sondern bläst tal­ auswärts, weht also sozusagen in die falsche Richtung. Analoge Sonderlinge gibt es unter anderem am Berninapass, im Davoser Hochtal und am Arlberg.

This process is also referred to as the respiration of the mountain – inhaling by day and exhaling at night. The wind changes direction between day and night, usually a few hours after sunrise or sunset. The daytime valley wind suddenly increases in strength and reaches its peak in the early afternoon. The night-time mountain wind is considerably less strong and fluctuates less regularly than the valley wind.

But all rules have an exception! And the Upper Engadin weather phenomenon, the Maloja wind, is a truly magical showcase of nature. Unlike other valley winds, it does not blow uphill instead flows downhill, i.e. in the wrong direction! Other such strange phenomena can be found at the Bernina Pass, Davos mountain valley and on the Arlberg.

Questo fenomeno è anche denominato »respiro della montagna« – con un respiro al giorno, inspirando di giorno ed espirando di notte. Il cambiamento di direzione da vento diurno a vento notturno avviene normalmente qualche ora dopo l’alba e il tramonto. Il vento da valle diurno aumenta velocemente e raggiunge il massimo di primo pomeriggio. Il vento notturno è molto più debole e soffia con meno regolarità rispetto al vento dalla valle.

Ma ogni regola ha la sua eccezione! Il fenomeno meteorologico dell’Alta Engadina, il Vento del Maloja è una tale magia della natura. Esso non soffia infatti verso montagna come altri venti dalla valle, bensì fuori dalla valle, e quindi per così dire nella direzione sbagliata. Questi fenomeni speciali sono visibili tra l’altro anche sul passo del Bernina, nella valle di Davos e all’Arlberg.

Himmlisches S c hö n w e t t e r k i n d Die Andersartigkeit des Malojawindes, einem der stärksten Lokalwinde der Alpen, fiel bereits 1879 Julius von Hann auf.

Er stellte fest, dass sich dieser Wind ganz abweichend von dem gewöhnlichen Verhalten manifestiere. Noch früher, exakt im Jahre 1877, hatte der Engadiner Arzt J. M. Ludwig vermerkt, dass im Sommer der sogenannte Talwind bläst. Dies sei ein lokaler Wind, welcher bei der Flussrichtung von Maloja nach S-chanf mitunter recht lebhaft wehe.

Er fehle am Morgen, blase am stärksten in den warmen Mittagstunden und verliere sich gegen Abend allmählich.

Schon damals waren zwei Südwestwinde bekannt, der der als Schlechtwetterwind im Sommer Regen und im Winter Schnee bringt, und der andere von Ludwig beschriebene Malojawind, welcher in der warmen Jahreszeit als Schönwetterkind auftritt. Er setzt, wie Windmessungen in Sils ergaben, um etwa 10 Uhr ein, erreicht sein Maximum mit einer mittleren Windgeschwindigkeit von 25 km / h am Nachmittag, um im Laufe des Abends abzuflauen. Nach Mitternacht setzt bei Sils dann meist der talaufwärts wehende, viel weniger starke Gegenwind ein.

Der bekannteste und wohl eigenwilligste dieser Talwinde ist jedoch derjenige von Maloja. Er ist zugleich auch einer der stärksten Lokalwinde der Alpen schlechthin.

The unusual nature of the Maloja wind, one of the strongest local winds in the Alps, was noticed by Julius von Hann in 1879. He realised that this wind behaved differently to normal.

Before this, in 1877, the Engadin doctor J. M. Ludwig noticed that the so-called valley wind blows in summer. He realised that this localised wind occasionally becomes very strong when blowing in the direction of the river from Maloja to S-chanf. It is absent in the morning, strongest over the warm midday period and then gradually dies down over the evening.

At that time, two south-westerly winds were identified: a bad weather wind which brings rain in summer and snow in winter and the Maloja wind described by Ludwig which emerges in the warm season as a fair weather wind. Wind measurements taken in Sils reveal that it picks up at around 10.00 am, reaches its peak in the afternoon with an average wind speed of 25 km / h and drops off over the course of the evening. After midnight, a less strong counter-wind takes its place, blowing up the valley.

Je nach Heilfaktoren werden die Klima­ kurorte der Schweiz in verschiedene Reizstufen eingeteilt. Dabei spielen Reiz­ faktoren wie Höhenlage, Besonnung und Strahlung, aber auch Schonfaktoren wie relative Stabilität der Witterung oder Schutz vor stärkeren Winden eine Rolle.

Deshalb verwundert es nicht, dass sich der Malojawind aktiv auf das klimatologische Rating der Kurorte auswirkt.

Climate health spas in Switzerland are divided into different climatic appeal levels depending on the healing factors involved.

These include appealing factors such as altitude, sunshine and radiation and protective factors such as relative stability of the weather or protection from stronger winds. It is no wonder then that the Maloja wind has an active impact on the climatological rating of health spa resorts!

I centri di cura svizzeri vengono suddivisi in diversi livelli di stimolazione. Per la suddivisione sono considerati fattori di stimolazione come altitudine, soleggiamento e raggi, ma anche fattori di protezione come un tempo relativamente stabile o luoghi protetti da forti venti. Non sorprende quindi che il vento del Maloja influisca sul rating climatologico dei centri di cura.

Je nach Gewichtsverteilung in den beiden Waagschalen für Reiz- und Schonfaktoren werden die Kurorte in vier Reizstufen eingeteilt. Die dem Malojawind ausgesetzten Ortschaften St. Moritz, Silvaplana und Sils werden der höchsten Reizstufe zugeordnet, Pontresina dagegen, das vom Malojawind kaum tangiert wird, findet sich eine Stufe unter dem Reizmaximum. Solche Unterschiede können sogar von Vorteil sein, da sie den Gästen eine echte Auswahl bieten.

Spa resorts are divided into four appeal categories depending on the ratio of climatic appeal and protective factors. Resorts affected by the Maloja wind such as St. Moritz, Silvaplana and Sils are allocated to the highest climatic appeal level whereas Pontresina, which is barely touched by the Maloja wind, is in the category below the maximum. These differences can be advantageous in that they offer guests a genuine choice.

Deshalb hat er seit jeher etliche Meteorologen aus dem In- und Ausland beschäftigt, die verschiedene Theorien aufstellten. Die älteste besagt, dass die Luftmassen auf der Alpen­ südseite durch Erwärmung über die Maloja­ passhöhe gehoben werden und sich so ins Engadin ergiessen. Eine zweite Theorie betrachtet den Malojawind als Fortsetzung des Bergeller Talwindes, welcher übers Ziel hinausschiesst, weil eine wirksame Talscheide fehlt, und sich so den Weg durchs Engadin bahnt.

Die dritte, neuere Theorie sieht die Ursache der Entstehung des Malojawindes im Engadin selber. Die starke Erwärmung tagsüber lässt die Luft in Form von Hangwinden aufsteigen, was eine horizontale Nachschubströmung auslöst. Warum diese im Engadin aus der falschen Richtung erfolgt, geht aus der Topografie hervor: Der Nachschubweg aus dem Bergell ist viel kürzer als derjenige durch das ganze Inntal, das zudem durch seinen Knick unterhalb von Zernez noch sog­m indernd wirken würde.

Queste differenze possono essere addirittura vantaggiose perchè offrono all’ospite una vera e propria scelta.

As a result, endless meteorologists from Switzerland and abroad have come up with various theories over time. The oldest theory claims that the masses of air on the southern side of the Alps are warmed and then rise above the level of the Maloja Pass before pouring into the Engadin. A second theory considers the Maloja wind to be a continuation of the Bergell valley wind which overshoots its mark because there is no effective valley wall acting as a barrier, therefore leaving the pathway to the Engadin open.

È dunque sempre stato oggetto d’interesse di diversi meteorologi, i quali hanno sviluppato le diverse teorie. La più vecchia di esse dice che le masse d’aria al di sopra della parte meridionale delle Alpi si riscaldano e vengono spinte sopra la cima del passo del Maloja, raggiungendo così l’Engadina. Un’altra teoria considera il vento del Maloja l’estensione del vento a valle della Bregaglia che oltrepassa il traguardo per la mancanza di un’efficace barriera all’estremità della valle, raggiungendo quindi l’Engadina.

A third and more recent theory traces the development of the Maloja wind back to the Engadin itself. The strong warming effect throughout the day causes the air to rise in the form of slope winds which then triggers a horizontal influx of new air to take its place.

This process occurs in the wrong direction in the Engadin due to the local topography: the air from Bergell can move in much more quickly than it can from across the entire Inntal valley. The Inntal air would have a reduced flow in any case due to the turning point below Zernez.

La terza e la più nuova delle teorie sostiene che il vento abbia avuto origine quando si è formata l’Engadina stessa. Il forte riscaldamento durante il giorno fa salire l’aria sotto forma di venti sui pendii, e questi venti vengono quindi alimentati orizzontalmente. Weil dem Oberengadin in Richtung Bergell ein Talabschluss fehlt, wird das Engadin für den Wind aus dem Süden zum Schengenraum frei.

Julius von Hann lag somit schon 1879 richtig, wenn er argumentierte, dass kein Zweifel bestehe, wenn das Oberengadin den gewöhnlichen Talabschluss durch höhere Berge (oder einen höheren Pass) hätte, dass es dann auch seinen aufsteigenden Talwind haben würde.

Meteorologists agree on one thing: the unusual wind conditions reflect the unusual layout of the land. Since there is no end to the Upper Engadin valley in the direction of Bergell, the Engadin is left open to wind blowing in from the south to the Schengen area. Julius von Hann was therefore correct in 1879 when he argued that the usual uphill valley wind patterns would be established if the Upper Engadin had the normal end of the valley formation with higher mountains (or a higher mountain pass).

Siccome in alta Engadina in direzione della Bregaglia manca uno sbarramento all’estremità della valle, l’Engadina diventa una sorta di spazio Schengen per il vento da sud.

Julius von Hann aveva dunque ragione già nel 1879, sostenendo che se all’estremità dell’Engadina ci fosse un usuale sbarramento formato da alte montagne (o da un alto passo) L’Engadina avrebbe senza dubbi anche il proprio vento a valle.

Doch lustigerweise spielt das Prinzip keine Regel ohne Ausnahme selbst innerhalb der Ausnahme: Neben dem abnormalen Talwind weht im Engadin auch ein normaler Wind aus Nordost talaufwärts, die «Brüscha», allerdings mehr im Unter- als im Oberengadin, und nur dann, wenn über den Alpen eine kräftige Nordostströmung dominiert.

The theory of air being sucked in from the wrong direction is also confirmed by upper wind measurements which show that the valley wind in Bergell is composed of two layers with a maximum speed close to the ground and a different speed higher up which coincides with that of the Maloja wind, i.e. it is caused by the suction effect of the Maloja wind.

Funnily enough, the principle of there being an exception to every rule also has its own exception: in addition to the abnormal valley wind patterns, there is also a normal wind in the Engadin which blows from the north-east up into the valley. This is known as the »Brüscha« and is present more in the Lower than in the Upper Engadin but only when there is a powerful north-easterly wind direction.

Der Malojawind manifestiert sich vor allem in den Sommer- und Herbstmonaten. Denn bereits 1933 schrieb Bäderarzt Paul Gut: «Wäre der sommerliche SchönwetterMalojawind, in der warmen Jahreszeit ein erwünschter, kühlender Reizfaktor, auch im Winter aktiv, was er zum Glück nicht ist, könnte man das Oberengadin als Winter­ destination vergessen.» Als stärkster Talwind der Alpen hat er in der warmen Jahreszeit einen grossen Einfluss auf das Klima.

The Maloja wind manifests itself during the summer and autumn months in particular.

Spa physician Paul Gut wrote in 1933: »If the good weather Maloja wind in summer, a desirable cooling factor during the warm seasons, was also active in winter (which fortunately it isn’t), we would have to forget the Upper Engadin as a winter destination«.

As the strongest valley wind in the Alps, it also has a significant influence on the climate during the warm season.

Empfunden wird er als kühl, was weniger auf die Lufttemperatur, als auf die Wind­ geschwindigkeit zurückzuführen ist.

Solche Abkühlung ist in der Tagesmitte willkommen. Heiss geliebt wird der Maloja­ wind von den Seglern; sie haben, wenn im Unterland an heissen Sommertagen kein Lüftchen weht, auf den Engadiner Seen pralle Segel. Auch Segelflieger nutzen im Engadin den Malojawind.

It feels cold but this is more due to the wind speed than the air temperature. This cooling effect is welcome in the middle of the day.

The Maloja wind is very popular with sailors in particular. When there is not a breeze of air on hot summer days in the lowlands, sails billow with air on the Engadin lakes. Gliders also make use of the Maloja wind in the Engadin.

Eine weitere positive Eigenschaft dieses regelmässigen Schönwetterwindes wissen die Bauern zu schätzen. Dank viel Sonnenschein und wenig Luftfeuchtigkeit wird aus dem am Morgen geschnittenen Gras bis am Abend trockenes Heu. Der Malojawind ist sozusagen ihre biologische und zudem kostenfreie Grastrocknungsanlage. Das Haar in der Suppe der Malojawind-Positivmeldungen sind gewisse Wuchsdeformationen an Bäumen, die man dem himmlischen Kind zuschreibt.

Another positive effect of this regular good weather wind is appreciated by the local farmers. The high levels of sunshine and low air humidity mean that grass cut in the morning is transformed into dry hay by the evening. The Maloja wind is like an organic and free grass drying system. The only downside to these positive Maloja wind reports is the fact that the wind can cause deformed growth in trees which is often said to be due to the hand of God.

Le misurazioni del vento in altitudine confermano la teoria dell’aria che soffia dalla direzione sbagliata, dimostrando che il vento a valle della Bregaglia è formato da due strati con una velocità massima vicino al suolo e un’altra velocità massima in altitudine, che coincide con quella del vento del Maloja e quindi viene determinata dal suo effetto risucchio. La cosa buffa è che il fatto che c’è sempre un’eccezione alla regola è in questo caso esso stesso è un’eccezione. Oltre all’inconsueto vento a valle in Engadina soffia anche un vento normale, denominato »Brüscha«, un vento proveniente da nord-ovest che soffia verso la parte superiore della valle, in ogni caso più nella bassa Engadina che nell’alta Engadina, e solamente quando sopra le Alpi le correnti spingono con forza l’aria verso nord-ovest.

Poichè già nel 1933 il medico termale Paul Gut scrisse: »Se il vento del Maloja, che d’estate è un apprezzato per la sua azione rinfrescante, fosse attivo anche d’inverno, e per fortuna non lo è, l’alta Engadina non sarebbe mai diventata una meta turistica invernale.« Essendo il vento a valle più forte di tutto l’arco alpino d’estate influisce molto sul clima.

Provoca un effetto di rinfresco più per la velocità del vento che per la temperatura dell’aria. Un tale rinfresco è molto gradito nelle ore attorno il mezzogiorno. Il vento del Maloja è molto amato dai velisti, che sui laghetti engadinesi hanno la vela spiegata mentre in piano non circola un filo d’aria.

Anche coloro che praticano il volo a vela utilizzano il vento del Maloja in Engadina.

Anche i contadini hanno un motivo per apprezzare questo regolare vento da bel tempo. Grazie al vento il sole splende per molte ore e l’erba tagliata la mattina si trasforma in fieno asciutto entro sera. Il vento del Maloja è per così dire la loro apparecchiatura biologica gratuita per l’essiccazione dell’erba. Tra le molte caratteristiche positive il vento del Maloja un punto debole comunque ce l’ha: sugli alberi si formano degli strati di cera che vengono attribuiti al »bambino celeste«.

100 Jahre Eleganz Seit der Erfindung des Automobils durch Carl Benz und Gottlieb Daimler im Jahre 1885 gibt es nur eine Handvoll Automobilmarken, welche ihr 100-jähriges Bestehen feiern können, so z. B. Daimler-Benz (Mercedes), Chevrolet, Aston Martin und dieses Jahr auch Maserati. Was die 5 rennverrückten Brüder, Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ernesto und Ettore Maserati aus Bologna seit 1914 auf die Räder stellten, gebar die schönsten, und teilweise auch erfolgreichsten Rennwagen der 50er Jahre (z. B. A6GCS, 300S, 450S und den schönsten Formel 1 überhaupt, den Maserati 250F). Der dem Neptunbrunnen in Bologna entliehene Dreizack wurde deren Markenzeichen, unter welchem ab den 50er Jahren auch fabulöse Gran Turismos den betuchten Besitzern strahlende Gesichter schenkten. What started out with five racing enthusiast brothers (Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ernesto and Ettore Maserati) from Bologna building a car in 1914 gave rise to the most attractive racing cars of the 50s (e.g. A6GCS, 300S, 450S and the most beautiful Formula 1 vehicle of all, the Maserati 250F). The company logo was based on the trident from the Neptune fountain in Bologna and it was under this logo that the fabulous Gran Turismos brought smiles to the faces of the well-to-do owners. Before the war, the brothers concentrated almost exclusively on the construction of racing cars in various international categories and secured the Formula 1 World Championship title in 1957 through Fangio.

Da quando nel 1885 Carl Benz e Gottlieb Daimler inventarono l’automobile, ci sono solo un pugno di marchi automobilistici che possono festeggiare i loro 100 anni d’esistenza, ad esempio la Daimler-Benz (Mercedes), Chevrolet, Aston Martin e quest’anno anche la Maserati. Quello che hanno messo in piedi i 5 fratelli appassionati di corsa Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ernesto ed Ettore Maserati di Bologna a partire dal 1914, ha fatto nascere le automobili da corsa più belle e più coronate da successo degli anni 50 (ad esempio A6GCS, 300S, e l’automobile da formula la più bella in assoluto: la Maserati 250F). Il tridente copiato dalla fontana di Nettuno di Bologna è diventato il marchio, sotto il quale anche le favolose Gran Turismo facevano sorridere le facce ricoperte da fazzoletti dei proprietari. Prima della guerra i fratelli si concentrarono quasi esclusivamente sulla costruzione di automobili da corsa per le diverse categorie internazionali, per poi vincere anche il titolo mondiale nella Formula 1 con Fangio nel 1957.

01 Schon 1926 holte Guerrino Bertocchi mit dem Tipo 26 den Klassen­ s­ ieg bei der anspruchsvollen Targa Florio (Sizilien). Ein wunderbarer Reihen-8-Zylinder mit 2 Litern erwies sich als unschlagbar. Auf den Geschmack gekommen, fügten sie nun 2 Motoren zu einem veritablen V-16 mit 4 Litern und Doppel­kompressoren zusammen, mit welchem die damals so populären Geschwindigkeits­rekorde angegriffen wurden.

Da es dafür auch echte Kerle brauchte, setzte sich Alfieri Maserati gleich selbst hinter das Lenkrad, um die 305 PS zu bändigen.

Baconin Borzacchini erreichte damit 1929 beachtliche 244 km / h und gewann 1930 auch den Grand Prix Tripoli (Libanon). Ein gleich motorisierter Sportwagen für Herren­fahrer wurde von der nicht minder legendären Carrozzeria Zagato eingekleidet. Auch das Modell 8C-2500 reüssierte 1929 mit Ernesto Maserati und Bertocchi an der Targa Florio.

01 In 1926, Guerrino Bertocchi achieved a class victory with the Tipo 26 in the challenging Targa Florio (Sicily). The magnificent 2 litre, 8-cylinder car proved unbeatable. Building on this experience, the company went on to combine two engines to create the 4 litre V-16 with dual compressors which attempted to break the popular speed records of the day. Since this feat required a courageous driver sitting behind the wheel, Alfieri Maserati decided to take on the role himself to control the 305 HP engine. Baconin Borzacchini achieved a considerable 244 km / h with the model in 1929 and in 1930 won the Grand Prix Tripoli (Lebanon). A similar motorised sports car for male racing drivers was designed by the equally legendary Carrozzeria Zagato. The 8C-2500 model achieved success at the Targa Florio in 1929 with Ernesto Maserati and Bertocchi.

02 Der 3-Liter GP-Monoposto 8CM mit Kompressor bereicherte 1935 mit dem deutschen Superstar Bernd Rosemeyer den Grand Prix Schweiz in Bern, und 1936 kämpfte Fifi Etancelin (immer mit umgekehrter Schirmmütze) mit dem ersten V-8 mit 4,8 Liter, aber weniger Glück, gegen die Konkurrenz von Alfa Romeo, Auto Union oder Mercedes.

Es würde den Rahmen dieses Rückblickes sprengen, wenn wir all die herrlichen 6- und 8-Zylinder der Vorkriegsjahre, und deren zahllose Einsätze, aufzählen würden, weshalb hier nur einige wenige Meilen­ steine erwähnt sein sollen.

02 The 3 litre GP-Monoposto 8CM with compressors was an attractive new addition to the Swiss Grand Prix in Berne in 1935 driven by German superstar Bernd Rosemeyer and in 1936, Fifi Etancelin (with his peaked cap back-to-front) battled it out against competition from Alfa Romeo, Auto Union and Mercedes in the first V-8 with a 4.8 litre engine, albeit less successfully. Unfortunately space constraints make it impossible to mention all of the magnificent 6 and 8 cylinder engines of the pre-war years and their countless missions and therefore we will stick to just a few key milestones here.

03 1937 mussten die Maseratis – in finanzielle Schwierigkeiten geraten – die Hilfe von Adolfo Orsi in Anspruch nehmen und nur 3 Brüder blieben weiter an Bord. Nach dem Krieg begann man alsbald mit einem kleinen Reihen-6-Zylinder mit 1 500 ccm im A6G, welchen auch gleich die namhaftesten italienischen «Carrozzerie» einkleideten. Die Nachkriegs­ jahre brachten weitere wunderschöne Rennwagen wie den 2-Liter A6GCS von 1953 / 54 mit Fantuzzi-Karrosserie und den A6GCS von Zagato, hervor. An der Mille Miglia, einem damals heissumkämpften und prestigeträchtigen Wettbewerb, kämpften Asse wie Stirling Moss um den Klassen­sieg. Auch Pininfarina und Frua bescherten den leichten Sportlern äusserst sehenswerte Kleider.

03 In 1937, the Maseratis had to enlist the help of Adolfo Orsi due to financial difficulty and only three of the brothers remained on board.

After the war, they immediately began working on a small 1 500 ccm, 6 cylinder A6G which was then immediately enclosed within the famous Italian »Carrozzerie«. The post-war years brought various other magnificent racing cars such as the 2 litre A6GCS from 1953/54 with a Fantuzzi body and the A6GCS by Zagato. Racing maestros such as Stirling Moss battled it out for class victory in the Mille Miglia, a hotly contested and prestigious competition of the day. Pininfarina and Frua also provided the light-weight sportsmen with some attractive vehicles.

04 1953 schlug die Geburtsstunde des wohl schönsten Formel 1 der Geschichte, dem 250F, welcher bis zum Weltmeistertitel 1957 mit Juan Manuel Fangio und weiteren Fahrern wie Prinz Bira von Siam oder Stirling Moss, zahlreiche Rennen für sich entscheiden durfte. Es galt Alfa Romeo und Mercedes zu besiegen, und der 250F mit seinem Reihen-6-Zylinder mit 2,5 Litern Hubraum und den unvergleichlich harmonischen Proportionen der Fantuzzi-Karrosserie erwies sich als (zu) harte Nuss für die Konkurrenz.

04 1953 marked the launch of the most attractive Formula 1 vehicle in history, the 250F, which won many races such as the World Champion­ ship title in 1957 with Juan Manuel Fangio as well as being driven by numerous other drivers such as Prince Bira of Siam and Stirling Moss.

The opponents to be defeated included Alfa Romeo and Mercedes and with its 2.5 litre capacity, 6 cylinder engine and the unrivalled balanced proportions of the Fantuzzi body, the 250F proved (too) hard to beat.

07 Das Werk hatte sich aber bereits 1957, nach dem Gewinn der Weltmeisterschaft, von Werkseinsätzen zurückgezogen und konzentrierte sich fortan auf die Entwicklung und den Bau von Kundenfahrzeugen und zahlreichen edlen GTs, heute allesamt gesuchte Sammler-Pretiosen. So kleidete Touring 1957 das erste Serien-Modell des 3500 GT ein, welches vom sehr bewährten und lange gebauten 3,5 Liter Reihen-6-Zylinder motiviert wurde.

07 By 1957, after winning the World Championships, the company had withdrawn from factory production and began to concentrate on developing and building customer vehicles and numerous exquisite GTs, today all sought-after collector’s items. Touring supplied the body for the first series model of the 3500 GT which was powered by the tried-and-trusted 3.5 litre 6 cylinder engine which had been produced for a number of years.

07 La fabbrica già nel 1957 dopo aver vinto il campionato mondiale si era già ritirata dalle competizioni e da allora si concentrava sullo sviluppo e sulla costruzione di veicoli per clienti e di molte preziose GT, che oggigiorno sono oggetti preziosi ricercati dai collezionisti. 09 1959 wurde das Geburtsjahr eines weiteren einmaligen und inzwischen ebenfalls hochdotierten Rennwagens, des un­ver­gleichlichen Tipo 60 / 61 «Birdcage». Sein aus dünnen Stahlrohren konzipiertes, filigranes Chassis hatte grosse Ähnlichkeiten mit einem Vogelkäfig.

Mit seinen kraftvollen 3-Litern und 4-Zylindern wurde dieser Sport­ wagen zu einem sehr beliebten und erfolgreichen Konkurrenten, welcher u. a. von Stirling Moss oder Caroll Shelby auch in den USA eingesetzt wurde.

08 Einige wenige Modelle des brutalen 5000 GT (V8) wurden von Frua, Michelotti, Ghia und Pininfarina eingekleidet und liessen u. a. den Schah von Persien oder auch Gianni Agnelli von Fiat blendend aussehen. Da man sich in Modena auf die Konstruktion leistungs­ fähiger Motoren verstand, wurden die grossen V8 auf bis zu 6,2 Liter aufgebohrt und schon früh für den Einsatz in der damals ebenfalls sehr populären Powerboat-Klasse erfolgreich modifiziert.

08 A few models of the brutal 5000 GTs (V8) were fitted with bodywork by Frua, Michelotti, Ghia and Pininfarina and created a sensational look for the Shah of Persia and Gianni Agnelli of Fiat, among others. Modena was well-versed in the construction of high-performance engines and the large V8 was increased to a 6.2 litre capacity and successfully modified at an early stage for use in the very popular powerboat class of the day.

09 1959 saw the launch of another unique and generously endowed racing car, the unsurpassed Tipo 60 / 61 »Birdcage«. The filigree body bore similarities to a birdcage with its thin steel tubes. Due to its powerful 3 litre capacity and 4 cylinder design, this sports car became a very popular and successful competitor driven by the likes of Stirling Moss and Caroll Shelby in the USA.

08 Pochi modelli della brutale 5000 GT (V8) sono stati rivestiti da Frua, Michelotti, Ghia e Pininfarina e fecero risplendere tra l’altro lo scià di Persia oppure Gianni Agnelli della Fiat. Siccome a Modena si sapeva come costruire motori potenti, i grossi V8 furono ampliati a 6,2 litri e subito modificati con successo per essere impiegati nell’altrettanto popolare categoria Powerboat.

09 Nel 1959 fu costruita un’altra automobile da corsa unica e nel frattempo divenuta molto potente: l’incomparabile Tipo 60 / 61 »Birdcage«. Il suo telaio filigranato fatto di sottili tubi d’acciaio sembrava molto ad una gabbia per uccelli. Con i sui potenti 3 litri e 4 cilindri questa automobile sportiva diventò un amato concorrente ed ebbe molto successo. Fu utilizzata tra l’altro da Stirling Moss o Caroll Shelby anche negli USA.

10 Die Produktion von hocheleganten GT’s fand 1963 im «Mistral» mit Frua-Karrosserie (4 Liter, 6-Zylinder in Reihe) eine sehr gelungene Fortsetzung und begleitete die Präsentation des ersten «Quattroporte» im gleichen Jahr. Der englische Konkurrent Aston Martin hatte 1961 seinen Lagonda Rapide mit 4 Türen vorgestellt, worauf in Modena die Idee entstand, ebenfalls einen Gentleman-Express zu lancieren.

Dessen 4,2 Liter V8 ermöglichte eine Spitze von 230 km / h, was ihn zum schnellsten 4-Türer gemacht haben dürfte.

10 The production of ultra-elegant GTs continued in 1963 as part of the »Mistral« series using Frua bodywork (4 litres, 6 cylinders) and accompanied presentation of the first »Quattroporte« the same year.

The first English competitor, Aston Martin, introduced its 4-door Lagonda Rapide in 1961 which gave rise to the idea of launching a similar »gentleman express« in Modena. The 4.2 litre V8 engine enabled a top speed of 230 km / h, making it the fastest 4 door of its time.

11 Etwas später folgte eine 4,7-Liter-Version, womit dieser Motor einer der erfolg­reichsten Aggregate der Marke wurde. Dieser Business-Express legte den Grundstein für die aktuelle, sehr populäre ­Quattroporte-Reihe. Über den maskulinen «3500 GT Sebring» von 1964 und den zurückhaltend gestylten «Mexico», beide von Vignale, führte die Entwicklung hin zum unvergleichlichen «Ghibli», welcher noch heute träumen lässt. Dieser von Giugiaro (damals bei Ghia) gezeichnete, ultra­flache 2-Sitzer, welcher dem Ferrari Daytona Paroli bot, gilt noch heute als Design-Ikone und erzielt weltweit hohe Sammler­preise. Mit 270 km / h war er mindestens so schnell wie der gleichnamige Wüstenwind und wurde mit 1 274 gebauten Modellen (1 149 Coupés und 125 Spyder) auch ein kommerzieller Erfolg.

This business express laid the foundations for the latest, highly popular Quattroporte series. The development led to the masculine »3500 GT Sebring« of 1964 and the more reserved »Mexico«, both produced by Vignale as well as the unrivalled »Ghibli« which is still desirable today. This ultra-flat 2-seater designed by Giugiaro (then Ghia), competed with the Ferrari Daytona and is still regarded as a design icon today, achieving high collector’s prices across the world.

Reaching speeds of up to 270 km / h, it was at least as fast as the desert wind of the same name and was a real commercial success with 1 274 models built (1 149 coupés and 125 spyders).

12 Die heissen Winde hatten es Maserati offen­sichtlich angetan, weshalb das Mittel­ motor-Coupé «Bora», und Ghiblis nicht minder eleganter Nachfolger «Khamsin» getauft wurden. Dennoch blies ein eher eisiger Wind durch das Werk in Modena, weshalb man sich 1968 mit Citroёn ins Bett legen musste. Citroёns komplexe HochdruckHydraulik wurde in den Khamsin, Bora und den kleineren Merak verbaut, fielen aber bald durch Probleme auf, welche den Betrieb nicht immer problemlos gestalteten. Citroёn übernahm den kleinen Maserati-Motor des Merak (3 Liter V6) und lancierte den eher exzentrischen «SM». Durch kostspielige Garantieleistungen verlor man aber bald die gegenseitige Zuneigung und 1976 übernahm Alejandro DeTomaso die Marke mit dem Dreizack und lancierte 1981 die kleinen aber äusserst flotten «Biturbo»-Modelle. Die mit aufgeladenen V6-Motoren bestückten, zurück­ haltend gestylten Biturbos bescherten, dank sehr guter Fahreigenschaften, neue Kunden.

Mangelnde Zuverlässigkeit gab aber bald erneut Grund zur Sorge. Das Modell erlaubte zwar das Überleben der Marke, doch blieb die finanzielle Situation weiter instabil.

Despite this, a rather icy wind began to blow through the Modena plant which is why the company had to enter into collaboration with Citroёn in 1968. Citroёn’s complex high pressure hydraulics were incorporated into the Khamsin, Bora and smaller Merak, but problems soon emerged which had an impact on operations. Citroёn took over the small Maserati Merak engine (3 litre V6) and launched the somewhat more eccentric »SM«. However, costly guarantee services led to a loss of mutual respect and in 1976, Alejandro DeTomaso took over the tridentlogo brand and in 1981 launched the small but extremely nifty »Biturbo« model. The reserved style of the Biturbo, equipped with a V6 engine, secured the company new customers thanks to its excellent driving characteristics. However a lack of reliability soon caused renewed cause for concern. The model secured the brand’s survival but the financial situation remained unstable.

12 Indubbiamente alla Maserati piacevano i venti caldi, visto che furono creati la Coupé »Bora« a motore medio e il »Khamsin«, non meno elegante successore del Ghibli. Però nella fabbrica di Modena soffiava un vento gelido, perciò la Maserati nel 1968 dovette unirsi a Citroёn. La Khamsin, La Bora e la più piccola Merak furono dotate della complessa idraulica ad alta pressione di Citroёn.

Queste automobili avevano però sempre qualche problema, che la fabbrica non sempre era in grado di risolvere senza problemi.

Citroёn prese a carico il piccolo motore Maserati della Merak (motore V6 da 3 litri) e lanciò l’eccentrica »SM«. Le costose prestazioni di garanzia fecero però perdere subito l’affetto reciproco e nel 1976 Alejandro DeTomaso prese a carico il marchio con il tridente e nel 1981 lanciò i piccoli ma estremamente veloci modelli »Biturbo«. Le qualità di guida delle discrete Biturbo apportarono nuovi clienti ma non erano sempre affidabili e questo causò presto nuove preoccupazioni. Il modello permise alla marca di sopravvivere ma la situazione finanziaria rimase instabile.

13 Eine glückliche Fügung rief 1993 Fiat auf den Plan und Maserati wurde schliesslich 1997 vollständig unter das Dach der Fiat-Gruppe geholt, wo bereits Alfa Romeo und Ferrari auf die hübsche Schwester warteten. Professionelles Management und gesicherte Finanzierung durch die Mutter erlaubten die Entwicklung von neuen Modellen wie den von Italdesign gestalteten 3200 GT’s oder die Neuauflage des legendären Quattroporte, welcher von Pininfarina in einen überaus eleganten Massanzug gesteckt wurde. Die Synergien mit Ferrari erlaubten alsbald auch die Anpassung der Ferrari-Motoren, wobei man hier etwas mehr Wert auf üppiges Drehmoment als auf absolute Höchstleistung legte. Das erste damit ausgerüstete Modell war der 4200 GT, welcher aus dem 3200 GT entstand und in Coupé und Spider-Versionen vorgestellt wurde. 13 A stroke of good fortune prompted Fiat to act in 1993 and Maserati was finally integrated under the umbrella of the Fiat group in 1997 where Alfa Romeo and Ferrari were already waiting in the wings as beautiful sisters. Professional management and secure financing from the parent company permitted the development of new models such as the 3200 GTs designed by Italdesign and a new edition of the legendary Quattroporte which was incorporated into an elegant custom-made design by Pininfarina. Synergy with Ferrari enabled adaptation of the Ferrari engines to add greater emphasis on the substantial torque rather than maximum performance. The first model equipped with these features was the 4200 GT which developed from the 3200 GT and featured in the form of a coupé and spider version. This GT designed

by Giugiaro also formed the basis for a brand cup launched by Maserati which provided an opportunity for racing enthusiast gentlemen to compete with one another. The adaptation of the magnificently sonorous Ferrari V8 could also be described as a genuine success. In 2004, Maserati Corse also launched the mid-engine super sports car MC12 based on the Ferrari Enzo for the FIA-GT championship which he was indeed able to win in 2005 thanks to the powerful V12 with 632 HP.

La Ferrari a motore V8 con il suo motore sonoro può essere considerata un’adattazione perfettamente riuscita. Es wirkt manchmal, als ob eine kleine Brigade von fleissigen Heinzel­ männchen und -frauen fast unbemerkt – und rund um die Uhr – für das Wohlbefinden der Gäste sorgen. In unserer hauseigenen Wäscherei, der ‹Lingerie›, fallen täglich zwischen 1 600 und 3 300 Kilogramm Wäsche an, welche es Tag für Tag sorgfältig zu waschen, flicken und bügeln gilt. Diese praktisch unsichtbaren guten Geister unseres Hauses, 26 Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter in der ‹Lingerie› und 58 im House­ keeping, liefern jeden Tag die fachmännisch gepflegte Bettwäsche für 301 Betten und die Frottéewäsche für die dazugehörenden Badezimmer.

Nicht nur das: Auf Wunsch kümmern sie sich auch genauso auf­merksam um die persönliche Wäsche der Gäste. Diese liebevolle Pflege erfahren natürlich auch all unsere flauschigen Bademäntel, unsere Servietten oder die Kinderlätzchen unserer jüngsten Gäste.

Um alle diese Arbeiten rasch und sorgfältig ausführen zu können, steht unseren Mitarbeitern / guten Geistern eine Vielzahl professioneller Geräte der neuesten Generation zur Verfügung, welche umwelt­schonendes Waschen garantieren. Die Summe dieser Schritte wird von einer fach­k undigen «Dirigentin» beaufsichtigt und orchestriert, damit alle Instrumente im Takt die gewünschte Melodie spielen können. So trifft dieses Orchester auch Tag für Tag, jahrein jahraus, den richtigen Ton und bringt unsere Wäsche und unsere Gäste gleichermassen zum Strahlen.

It sometimes seems as though a small brigade of diligent little creatures is busy working away behind the scene almost unnoticed, ensuring the well-being of guests around the clock. Our in-house laundry, the ›Lingerie‹, deals with some 1 600 to 3 300 kg of washing every day, all of which is carefully washed, repaired and ironed as required. These almost invisible hard-working people at the hotel include 26 employees at the ›Lingerie‹ and 58 housekeeping staff who provide professionally maintained bed linen for 301 beds and towels for the corresponding bathrooms every single day. And not just that: they also wash guests’ own laundry, on request. This careful service is applied to all of our fleecy dressing gowns, serviettes and bibs for our younger guests too.

A volte si ha l’impressione che sia presente un gruppetto di gnomi che si dà da fare 24 ore su 24 quasi inosservato per garantire il benessere degli ospiti. The renowned wine trading company Landolt at Brand‑ schenkestrasse in Zurich had been producing noble wines for 170 years. Then the company moved to another place some years ago. Grand Cru, this is not just the neighbourhood in a sought-after and trendy residential area within Zurich’s District 2. Grand Cru, this is also the building project itself. Six architecture firms had been invited by the land owner, Agruna AG, to develop a building concept for this lot of around 6 000 square metres. The winning project of the renowned Zurich firm Bünzli & Courvoisier Architekten AG envisages a building with seven individual structural bodies set to one side of the other. To the north-west, it opens up directly to the green space along the river Sihl.

Zu einer Zeit, in welcher ein ägyptischer Unternehmer Hotels in den Schweizer Alpen baut, erinnert ein ledernes Gästebuch an die Epoche, als ein Schweizer Hotelier seine Gäste am Ufer des Nils betreute.

Die Rede ist von Anton Robert Badrutt (1888 – 1967), genannt Toni, damaliger Direktor des Winter Palace Hotels in Luxor, von dessen beiden Gästebüchern das Badrutt’s Palace Hotel im Juni 2013 eines an einer Versteigerung erwerben konnte.

Anton Robert war ein Enkel des Hotelpioniers Johannes Badrutt und Sohn von Peter Robert, der als vierter von elf Kindern, als dritter Sohn und jüngerer Bruder von Caspar, dem Erbauer des Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, 1850 zur Welt kam. Anton Robert wurde 1888 geboren und übernahm 1920 als 32-jähriger Jungspund das legendäre Winter Palace in Luxor. Als im November 1922 Howard Carter im Tal der Könige das Grab von Tutanchamun entdeckte, logierte die gesamte archäologische Gesellschaft inklusive Lord Carnarvon im Winter Palace und wurde von Hotelier Toni Badrutt betreut. Das ältere der beiden Gästebücher enthält zahlreiche Unterschriften und Widmungen, die von der grössten Entdeckung der ägyptischen Geschichte zeugen.

Das jüngere Gästebuch, das am 25. Dezember 1927 beginnt, bezieht sich auf Tonis letzte Jahre in Ägypten und beinhaltet einige interessante Dankesbriefe von Gästen, unter anderem auch Briefe, die auf die Hotels in St. Moritz Bezug nehmen oder die wohlbekannte Gastfreundlichkeit der Hoteliers namens Badrutt rühmen.

1935 kehrte Toni Badrutt ins Engadin zurück. Dem letzten Eintrag im Gästebuch von März 1935 folgt ein Zeitungsartikel mit einer sensationellen Nachricht: Der Bündner Hotelier führte am 21. Dezember 1933 das erste Telefongespräch zwischen Ägypten und London! Das Gästebuch endet mit einer Bleistiftzeichnung des bekannten schiefen Kirchturms von St. Moritz. Und ein Brief mit dem Logo des Kulm Hotels erinnert daran, dass Toni Badrutt, zurück in der Heimat, die Leitung des Engadiner Kulm Hotels übernahm, währenddessen sein Cousin Hans und später dessen Sohn Andrea das Palace Hotel führten.

Die Geschichte der Hotelierfamilie Badrutt ist bedeutsam und von vielfältigen Wechselbeziehungen geprägt. Während es Johannes Badrutt vor 150 Jahren verstand, englische Touristen im Winter in das kalte, aber sonnige St. Moritz zu locken, zog dessen Nachkomme Anton die europäischen Touristen im Winter nach Ägypten. So schrieben die verschiedenen Mitglieder der Familie Badrutt unterschiedliche Seiten im grossen Buch der Hotelgeschichte.

Ziel und Vision des Badrutt’s Palace Hotel ist es heute, das in alle Winde zerstreute historische Erbe der Familie Badrutt hier an seinem Ursprungs­ ort zusammenzutragen und unter professioneller Betreuung ein Archiv als Ort der Erinnerung für künftige Generationen zu schaffen.

Das Gästebuch aus Ägypten wird in der Sommersaison 2014 am Eingang zum ‹Embassy Ballroom› ausgestellt.

In 1935, Toni Badrutt returned to the Engadin. After the last entry in the guestbook in March 1935, a newspaper article has been added with the sensational news: on 21st December 1933, the hotelier from Graubünden held the very first telephone call between Egypt and London! The guest book ends with a pencil drawing of the famous leaning church tower of St. Moritz. And a letter featuring the logo of the Kulm Hotel recalls that once back in his homeland, Toni Badrutt took over the Kulm Hotel in the Engadin as manager while his cousin Hans and later his son Andrea managed the Palace Hotel.

At a time when an Egyptian hotelier was building hotels in the Swiss Alps, a leather guestbook recalls the era when a Swiss hotelier was also looking after guests on the banks of the Nile.

The person in question is Anton Robert Badrutt (1888 – 1967), known as Toni, the former director of the Winter Palace Hotel in Luxor. Of his two guestbooks, Badrutt’s Palace Hotel acquired one at auction in June 2013.

Anton Robert was the grandson of hotel pioneer Johannes Badrutt and son of Peter Robert who was born in 1850 as the fourth of eleven children, the third son and the younger brother of Caspar who built the Badrutt’s Palace Hotel. Anton Robert was born in 1888 and in 1920 took over the legendary Winter Palace in Luxor at the youthful age of 32. When Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of Kings in November 1922, the entire archaeological team including Lord Carnarvon stayed at the Winter Palace and were looked after by hotelier Toni Badrutt. The older of the two guest books contains numerous signatures and dedications which make reference to this greatest discovery in Egyptian history.

The history of the Badrutt hotelier family is significant and characterised by various interrelationships. Even 150 years ago, Johannes Badrutt knew how to attract English tourists to the cold but sunny St. Moritz while his descendant Anton attracted European tourists to Egypt in winter. And so the various members of the Badrutt family have written numerous pages in the extensive history book of the hotel industry.

Today, the aim and vision of Badrutt’s Palace Hotel is to bring together the widely scattered historical heritage of the Badrutt family here where it all began and to create an archive as a memento for future generations, under professional supervision.

The more recent guest book starts on 25th December 1927 and refers to Toni’s last years in Egypt, containing some interesting thank you letters from guests as well as letters which refer to the hotels in St. Moritz and the renowned hospitality of the hotelier by the name of Badrutt.

The guestbook from Egypt will be on display during summer 2014 at the entrance to the ›Embassy Ballroom‹.

In un epoca nella quale un imprenditore egiziano sta costruendo alberghi sulle alpi svizzere, un libro degli ospiti in cuoio ci riporta all’epoca nella quale un’albergatore svizzero assisteva i suoi ospiti sulle rive del Nilo.

Questo albergatore è Robert Badrutt (1888 – 1967), detto Toni, a quell’epoca direttore del Winter Palace Hotel di Luxor. Il Badrutt’s Palace Hotel è riuscito ad acquistare uno dei suoi due libri degli ospiti ad un’asta nel giugno del 2013.

Anton Robert era nipote dell’albergatore pioniere Johannes Badrutt e il figlio di Peter Robert, che era il quarto di undici bambini, il terzo figlio e il fratello minore di Caspar, che ha costruito il Badrutt’s Palace Hotel nel 1850. Anton Robert è nato nel 1888 e a soli 32 anni ha preso in mano le redini del leggendario Winter Palace di Luxor.

Quando nel Novembre del 1922 Howard Carter scoprì la tomba di Tutankhamon nella Valle dei Re, l’intera associazione archeologica era alloggiata al Winter Palace, compreso Lord Carnarvon e veniva assistita dall’albergatore Toni Badrutt. Il più vecchio dei libri degli ospiti contiene molte firme e dediche, che testimoniano la più grande scoperta della storia d’Egitto.

Il più nuovo dei libri degli ospiti che inizia il 25 dicembre 1927, si riferisce agli ultimi anni che toni trascorse in Egitto e comprende alcune interessanti lettere di ringraziamento scritte da ospiti, tra l’altro anche lettere che si riferiscono agli alberghi di Sankt Moritz o alla nota ospitalità degli albergatori di nome Badrutt.

Nel 1935 Toni Badrutt torno in Engadina. All’ultima voce del libro degli ospiti che risale al marzo del 1935, fa seguito un articolo di giornale con una notizia sensazionale. Il 21 dicembre del 1933 l’albergatore grigionese fu il primo a chiamare Londra dall’Egitto! Il libro degli ospiti finisce con un disegno in matita raffigurante l’inclinato campanile della chiesa di Sankt Moritz. E una lettera provvista del logo dell’Hotel Kulm ricorda che una volta tornato in patria Toni Badrutt prese in mano le redini dell’Hotel Kulm engadinese, mentre suo cugino Hans e più tardi il figlio di quest’ultimo di nome Andrea assunsero la direzione del Palace Hotel.

La storia della famiglia di albergatori Badrutt è significativa e caratterizzata di molte correlazioni. Mentre Johannes Badrutt 150 anni fa riusciva ad attirare i turisti inglesi in inverno nella fredda ma soleggiata Sankt Moritz, suo figlio Anton attirava i turisti europei d’inverno in Egitto. E fu così che i diversi membri della famiglia Badrutt scrissero pagine diverse nel grande libro della storia degli alberghi.

Lo scopo e l’intenzione del Badrutt’s Palace Hotel è oggigiorno quello di riunire il patrimonio storico della famiglia Badrutt qui nel proprio luogo d’origine e di creare un archivio che funga da luogo di ricordo per le generazioni future.

Il libro degli ospiti proveniente dall’Egitto rimarrà esposto durante la stagione estiva del 2014 all’entrata dell’ ›Embassy Ballroom‹.
