Ireland’s Largest Technology Event

Dear Delegate, Firstly may I take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to attend the inaugural TechConnect-Live Conference & Exhibition. The timing of the event could not be more opportune with a new Government now in place, concerns over Brexit and the implications Ireland and a rapidly changing political landscape globally including one of our key trading allies the United States of America.

ICT now accounts for €60 billion or 35 per cent of total Irish exports. Nine of the top 10 software companies in the world have substantial operations here and the £100m of software and services in 1987 has grown to €50 billion today.

Over 82,000 people work in ICT, and – in the face of the worst recession we have ever seen – employment in the sector continues to grow. In fact, somewhat ironically at a time of high general unemployment, we still have significant numbers of hi-tech job vacancies unfilled due to skills shortages.

The challenge for government now is to develop solutions that will rapidly address skills shortages and employment needs. We must also stimulate indigenous enterprise for the next wave of ICT, which is already being driven by a pervasive internet sector, mobile technologies, IOT, social media platforms, data analytics and information and cloud services in every economic sector of a globally connected marketplace. We must do all we can to ensure Ireland retains its place as a global leader in ICT. This event has been designed to stimulate conversations between fledgling start-ups, seasoned entrepreneurs, investors, established enterprises and support agencies. Over 200 speakers, 90 exhibitors and 3,000 + delegates will make this the largest Tech based occasion in Ireland this year.

Speakers Brian Caulfield Partner Draper Esprit Brian Caulfield is an entrepreneur and venture capitalist.

He is a Partner at Draper Esprit, the leading European venture capital firm, and is based in Dublin, Ireland.

Prior to joining Draper Esprit, Brian was a partner at Trinity Venture Capital where he sat on the boards of or led investments in AePONA (sold to Intel – NASDAQ: INTC), ChangingWorlds (Amdocs – NYSE: DOX), CR2, SteelTrace (Compuware – NASDAQ: CPWR) and APT (CSR – LSE:CSR.L).

Previously, Brian co-founded both Exceptis Technologies – sold to Trintech Group (NASDAQ: TTPA) in November 2000 and Similarity Systems, a business focused data quality management software company that was acquired by Informatica (NASDAQ: INFA) in January 2006.

Brian’s Draper Esprit investments include Movidius, Datahug, RhodeCode and Mobile Travel Technologies (sold to Travelport – NYSE: TVPT). He also sits on the boards of Clavis Technology and the Irish Times, Ireland’s leading daily newspaper. He is a private investor/advisor to a number of early stage technology companies.

Brian is a Computer Engineering graduate of Trinity College Dublin. He was the 2007 recipient of the Irish Software Association’s “Technology Person of the Year” award. In 2010 he also received the Halo Business Angel Network’s “Business Angel of the Year” award and is the current Chairman of the Irish Venture Capital Association.

Louise Phelan Vice President of Global Operations for EMEA PayPal Louise Phelan is Vice President of Global Operations for Europe, Middle East and Africa, PayPal. She leads 2,600 teammates in Dublin, Dundalk and Berlin, working together in a culture of collaboration, respect and innovation.

Louise joined PayPal in 2006, when the company had 200 employees in Ireland. Prior to this, she was a member of the senior management team of GE Money, a division of General Electric.

In addition to her PayPal role, Louise is a non-executive Director at Ryanair, sits on the Board of Directors of Voxpro and is a member of the Action Plan for Jobs Implementation Group. She was the 2014 President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ireland.

Louise’s leadership achievements have seen her win numerous awards. She won Ireland’s ‘Most Trusted Leader’ at the Great Place to Work awards and ‘Irish Innovation Champion’ at the 2014 Innovation Luminary awards.

In 2012, Louise was awarded the Sir Michael Smurfit Achievement Award by The Ireland Chamber of Commerce – United States. In the same year, she was presented with an Outstanding Contribution to Irish Industry Award by the CCMA. In 2013 she received the Women Mean Business Person of the Year and Business Woman of the Year by InBusiness Magazine.

Louise is an advocate for Focus Ireland and participated in their ‘Shine a Light’ campaign in October 2013 and 2015 when she slept out in Dublin’s city center.

Liao is a social networking pioneer,author,speaker and is engaged in not for profit work. Among his non-profit endeavours he is a CoderDojo mentor and he has participated as an investor and volunteer in The Hunger Project in Uganda, New York and Mexico.

He has also been appointed as a special diplomatic envoy for St Kitts and Nevis for sustainable development and the environment. Liao has contributed to the St Kitts and Nevis recovery fund for the sugar cane industry there.

In 2009, he founded WeForest.org, an organisation promoting reforestation as a way to combat global warming. WeForest.org continues, with a stated goal of planting two trillion trees by 2020 and is run from Belgium by its current CEO Marie-Noelle Keijzer. Liao is still involved with WeForest and spoke at TED Long Beach 2011 about it.

He was an official part of the delegation of St Kitts and Nevis to the COP15 UN climate change summit in Copenhagen where he also promoted the science and concepts behind WeForest.org.

The Saoirse Foundation is a registered non-profit charity which, when originally established in March 2010, by Tony and Mary Heffernan, was initially dedicated to just Battens Disease. It got its name from their daughter, Saoirse, who suffered from this ultra rare disease. In January 2011 this fatal disease claimed Saoirse’s life, then just 5 years of age.

Since TSSG’s foundation in 1996, it has become an important catalyst for driving economic change in the South East Region of Ireland, transforming brilliant research ideas into start-up companies. TSSG, ICT centre of excellence, currently consists of over 100 research scientists and engineers, and manages an active international network in excess of 450 partners from industry, academic and research institutes spread across 35 countries worldwide.

While the charity continues to focus on Battens Disease, under its first initiativeBeeForBattens, since then we have evolved to encompass the support of many more sick children to meet the huge need of those affected by rare disease generally, which affect between 6-8% or the Irish population, that’s up-to 366,000 indivudals.

As the various pressing needs of children with rare and genetic diseases were identified, The Saoirse Foundation established two more initiatives to help make positive life impacts for sick children. Hence, Liam’s Lodge and BUMBLEance were born.

TSSG’s four key prioritised technical research areas include Mobile Platforms and Services, Security Privacy and Identity, Data Analytics and Social Computing, and Adaptive Networks and Services.
