The Theme of the National Sustainability Summit Conference & Exhibition is

“Securing Ireland’s Future” Dear Delegate, It’s clear that sustainability is no longer an optional add-on for business. In a commercial world of 5 and 10 year plans, adapting to climate change is now an imperative. Companies need to know that their supply chain is both secure AND sustainable. Shareholders and customers are increasingly demanding to know where their products are coming from. Market advantage will flow to those companies which can prove it.

EU emissions reduction targets are already influencing business planning in all sectors of the Irish economy: construction, manufacturing, IT, food, aviation, energy, water, retail, hospitality, logistics and supply chain. Innovations and entrepreneurial skills have already begun to create a more sustainable Ireland, and this will be reflected in the National Sustainability Summit.

The purpose of the National Sustainability Summit is to create a forum where business leaders, innovators, regulators and government can examine both the commercial opportunities in the emerging green economy as well as the challenges in achieving sustainability goals. Our aim is to create an annual event which will chart how industry is progressing and how Ireland Inc can secure competitive advantage.

This is not just a social call-to-action but a wake-up call for Irish business – something which will only become more apparent in the event of an international deal in Paris. A collaborative approach to sustainability is called for. Key stakeholders need to work together to achieve very challenging targets, including those already set by the European Union. There will be significant penalties for government and losses for business in the event of failure.

The speaker line up is drawn from senior management from the largest and most influential Irish and international companies who have delivered quantifiable eco results. Speakers come from areas such as pharmaceutical, food, aviation, retail, hospitality, food, construction, manufacturing, IT, logistics and supply chain and energy sectors. It will deliver compelling case studies that will help you create a sustainable business of your own or adapt your current business model.

Paul Cunningham is an Irish journalist and author. He is currently Europe Correspondent for RTÉ News and Current Affairs. He has regularly reported on conflicts, natural disasters and other matters outside the EU. Most recently he reported from Iran, Ukraine and Iraq. He has won multiple awards for his work. Cunningham has also written two books, including Ireland’s Burning.

Throughout my time in the European Parliament, sustainability has been a common theme in all policy areas. This is particularly true for the Committee on Industry Research and Energy (ITRE) where we routinely debate the sustainability of industrial processes and the energy mixes of Europe. This year, however, the debate has gathered pace as we approach December and the UNFCCC COP21, at which we expect to see a global agreement reached to ensure we meet our 2oC objective.

Over the past few months I have led discussions in the ITRE Committee as we look to put forward the Parliament’s position ahead of the conference.

I am also honoured to have been appointed as a European Parliament representative ahead of it. Discussions were tough at times – there is certainly a balance to be struck between showing the highest level of ambition possible and ensuring a fair deal for our industries – but I believe we found a good balance in the end. I, and likely most others in attendance in Paris, will be keen to see an ambitious, effective and binding global agreement in December – the ambition must be global, otherwise we put the competitiveness of some of our key growth sectors at risk.

In my work this year, I encouraged colleagues to call for the adoption of an ambitious and fair agreement that recognises the parallel challenges of combatting climate change, and ensuring global food security.

I look forward to sharing my experiences from all of this work at the Sustainability Summit and hope to get important views and feedback from home as COP21 fast approaches.

“Michael joined the Carbon Trust in 2002 as Director of Strategy, responsible for developing existing and new services to reduce carbon emissions and develop low carbon technologies.

He has carried out a number of strategic and operational roles at the Carbon Trust, including Director of Technology Development and his current role of Chief Operating Officer.

Previously, Michael was at McKinsey & Co where he specialised both in corporate & business unit strategy and performance improvement. Prior to that Michael worked at Procter and Gamble in product supply.

Michael Rea is a graduate of University College Dublin where he completed a BEng (Mech) in 1991. He was awarded the faculty gold medal in his final year. He also completed an MBA at INSEAD, Paris in 1996.”

Joe Power VP & Site Director GSK Cork

Joe is Site Director of GSK’s Cork site since December 2013. Joe joined GSK in 1988 as an Engineer at Cork, where he held various roles including Engineering Director and Operations Director. He then held a number of senior global roles at GSK before being appointed to his current role. Joe is a Chartered Engineer (UCD), holds an MBA (Warwick) and a Masters in studies in Manufacturing Leadership (Cambridge).

Brian Handcock Head of Sustainability John Sisk and Son Ltd

Brian is Head of Sustainability for John Sisk & Sons Ltd and has over 25 years’ experience of environmental and sustainability issues in a range of industries including construction, waste management, consultancy and manufacturing sectors. He is also active in a range of construction industry sustainability initiatives as current chair of CIRIA Environment Advisory Panel, Chair of CECA Environment Committee and contributor to CIP Environmental Manual as well as contributing to the development of a number of British Standards.

Geoff Mackey – Sustainable Development & Communications Director, BASF Europe North

Geoff is responsible for a service portfolio in Europe North including Sustainable Development, Advocacy & Communications.

Padraig Brennan Senior Business Analyst Origin Green, Bord Bia

Padraig Brennan holds the position of Manager, Sustainability Development in Bord Bia.

Over recent years Padraig has led a number of Bord Bia research programmes examining Sustainability and its implications for the Irish food and drink industry. He has been part of the team involved in the development and implementation of Bord Bia’s Origin Green Sustainability programme, which aims to demonstrate the commitment of the Irish food and drink industry at both farm and manufacturing level to producing in a sustainable manner and highlight the targets being set by the industry to deliver further improvements over time.

Padraig is from a farming background in Kilkenny and holds a Bachelor of Agricultural Science from UCD and a Masters in Marketing from the University of Western Australia.

Olga Grant Research Fellow UCD Forestry

Olga Grant is a plant scientist with a particular interest in the water use and requirements of both crop plants and natural vegetation. She has a PhD from the University of Leeds and has worked in universities and research institutes in the UK, Portugal, and Ireland.

She is currently a Research Fellow in the School of Agriculture and Food Science, UCD with many scientific publications relating to plantenvironment interactions. She also has abundant experience of transferring technological solutions to stakeholders – particularly in the horticultural sector.

These solutions include sensors for detecting crop water requirements and aid irrigation scheduling, and approaches to manipulate crop growth and improve crop quality by controlling water availability.

Vikram received his doctorate from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland specialising in the field of health monitoring of structures employing dynamic responses and associated vibration control methods. He carried out his postdoctoral

research in structural reliability analysis at Trinity College Dublin. Vikram worked as a Chartered Consulting Engineer subsequently and was involved with multiple infrastructure-related projects relevant at a national level in Ireland.

Vikram is the founder of Engineers Without Borders (EWB)– Ireland: UCC Chapter and is the Head of Learning, EWB-Ireland. He is also a senior committee member of Engineers Ireland, Cork Region. Dr. Diarmuid Grimes Senior Postdoctoral Researcher Insight Centre for Data Analytics, UCC

Dr. Diarmuid Grimes is a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics (UCC), which is a Science Foundation Ireland research centre and is a joint initiative primarily between researchers at four universities: DCU, NUI Galway, UCC and UCD. The primary expertise of the Insight group at University College Cork is in the area of Optimisation and Decision Analytics. Dr. Grimes is currently involved in the EU funded project “GENiC: Globally Optimised Energy Efficient Data Centres”.

Dr. Grimes has worked on a number of projects whose focus was energy efficiency and sustainability. Some sample projects include automating energy usage in the residential sector (in partnership with Intel Research Labs Europe), real-time electricity price prediction for the Irish market (for use by energy-cost aware scheduling end-systems), energy-efficient train timetabling for urban rail transport networks, and optimising energy usage in large scale data centers.

Dr. Karol Sikora, PhD, MA, MSc, BSc, is an Adjunct Lecturer and a Postdoctoral Researcher at the National University of Ireland, Galway and is involved in the €0.5 million international project: ‘Innovation in Irish Timber Usage’, funded by the Irish Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine.

He also acts as a co-supervisor of PhD Walsh Fellow carrying out the project: ’The influence of silvicultural practice on the structural properties of Irish timber’, funded by Teagasc.

Gary is currently a business development manager and product manager for Integrated Environmental Solutions Ltd. Gary holds an Honours Bachelor degree in Building Services Engineering from the Dublin Institute of Technology and is a member of the Institute of Engineers Ireland. Gary has been working for IES since 2007.

Gary progressed from a technical role as a project consultant to a business development manager role in 2011. In the business development role Gary has worked and is active in the Irish, UK, USA, European, South African and Australian Markets predominantly on the software side of the IES business.

Dr. O’Hogain has been lecturing on the Engineering degree course for 30 years, specialising in water and wastewater analysis.

Research topics have included Reed beds, design construction and monitoring and Rainwater Harvesting, design construction and monitoring.

Research projects included TECSPAR, an EU funded collaboration between three European Institutions and three Latin American Institutions.

Liam McCarton is a Chartered Engineer, with over 20 years’ experience in International Development, Environmental Engineering & Project Management of water, sanitation, education & health infrastructure projects. Liam has project managed major infrastructure projects in Ireland, Asia and Africa.

Liam leads the Development Technology Research Group within the Water Innovation Research Centre (WIRC) at DIT (www.dit.ie/dtc). Liam is also a director of Engineers Without Borders – Ireland.

Kieran Nolan Head of School of Chemical Sciences Dublin City University

Kieran Nolan carried out his PhD at York University, Toronto Canada. After completing his PhD in 1996 Kieran worked in both the pharmaceutical and packaging industry until 1998 when he joined the NCSR at DCU. In 2001 Kieran became a Lecturer

Speakers in the School of Chemical Sciences at DCU and Senior Lecturer in 2012. Kieran was a founding member of the DCU UDRI Environtech, that was established in February 2011, which is now part of the Dublin City University Water Institute. In October 2014 Kieran became the Head of School of Chemical Sciences at DCU. Expertise The Nolan research group has been intensively involved in the area of environmental sciences since its inception in 2001. In the past, Dr Nolan’s group has specialised in the development of new chemoreceptors for application in environmental sensing and extraction of heavy metals from waste streams.

More recently, the Nolan group has turned its attention to the development of new ‘Green’ synthetic technologies, with particular emphasis on the development of new energy and water efficient microflow photochemical reactors.

He is a Director of the UCD Centre of Sustainable Development Solutions and co-ordinates the UCD Ph.D. in Global Sustainable Development. He chairs the Academic Steering Committee of the Global Association of Masters of Development Practice that is based at the Earth Institute at Columbia University.

Rebecca completed her undergraduate (B.Comm) and master’s (M.Acc) level education at UCD. She is also a member of the Chartered Accountants in Ireland (CAI), having qualified with Arthur Andersen and KPMG. Prior to her appointment in UCD, she was a lecturer at School of Business, Dublin Institute of Technology.

Rebecca’s research interests are qualitative in nature and span a range of disciplines including: corporate sustainability practices and reporting, corporate governance, organizational identity and accountability in family firms, accounting education and qualitative methods. Her research work is currently focused on two main projects: the first is in the area of sustainability, identity and accountability in a family firm and the second focuses on the governance process in Irish semi-state bodies.

Dr Michael Millane is a Research Officer in Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) working on the conservation

and sustainability of the Atlantic salmon fisheries resource in Ireland. He has experience in experimental design, data management, risk analyses, field surveying and statistical modelling and analyses related to inland fisheries and associated freshwater environments. In addition, he has been involved in fisheries policy development and related stakeholder engagement and education and awareness initiatives.

Previous to his salmonid brief, Dr Millane worked extensively in IFI in the area of aquatic invasive species, primarily under the EU LIFE+ and NPWSfunded CAISIE project and the Non-native Species Risk Assessment project. He has been employed as a Research Officer by IFI since 2009, with previous periods working for its predecessor, the Irish Central and Regional Fisheries Boards, in both 2001 and 2004. He has also worked in environmental consultancies with a focus on fisheries and aquatic ecological assessments in both inland and coastal waters.
