LGBTQ+ WEDDINGS celebrate yours in extra-special ways As an LGBTQ+ couple, not everything about a traditional wedding translates well. At the end of the day, it’s about creating a ceremony and celebration that reflect you and your love story. So forget what you think a wedding should be, and go and make it your own! That said, there are many ways to take traditional elements and update them. Some of these updates aren’t even unique to LGBTQ+ weddings — they’re relevant to anyone. Let’s start with who’s paying. While this traditionally fell to the bride’s family, it’s now much more about who can afford it. What to wear? Whatever your heart desires! Don a couple of killer suits or stunning gowns — or one of each. As long as you feel like a million bucks, anything goes. When it’s time to walk down the aisle, you can do so together, or escorted

by a parent, dear friend, or mentor. Infuse the ceremony with gender-neutral language and choose readings that speak to your relationship. When picking your wedding party, go ahead and mix it up. Include anyone who has supported you, regardless of gender. In finding your vendors, look for LGBTQ+ -friendly businesses, like the ones featured in Premier Bride. Keep an eye out for diversity as you view vendor portfolios. Choosing vendors who share your vision of weddings and the world will ensure a celebration that exceeds your wildest dreams. With the right people by your side, a little imagination, and the confidence to show up as your truest selves, your day is sure to be an unforgettable.

MICRO WEDDINGS intimate and unforgettable Whether you’ve always dreamed of an intimate wedding or have come around to the idea due to the state of the world, micro weddings are a trend that seems poised to stand the test of time. So what is a micro wedding? It’s every bit as significant and special as a traditional wedding, but the guest count only ranges from about 5 to 50 people. Micro weddings are popular for a number of reasons. On the heels of Covid, a smaller wedding may be a necessity for some. For others, a micro wedding may mean less spotlight and attention. It can also mean less stress, as planning an event for fewer people inevitably means

less to keep track of and worry about. Budget also comes into play, as some brides and grooms would rather not spend their dollars on a big wedding. Opting for a courthouse ceremony followed by a meal at home or at their favorite restaurant with just those nearest and dearest greatly lowers the cost. On the flip side, some couples opt for a micro wedding so they can go all-out. Think about it: If you have a set budget, consider if you spent it on a party of 200 vs. a party of 50. The smaller party allows you to allocate more budget to doing every inch to the nines, giving those 50 lucky people an experience

MICRO WEDDINGS

they’ll never forget. The elements of a micro wedding will differ from couple to couple. There’s always a smaller guest list, but like we said, the price may vary — and so, too, may the experiences and vendors involved. Although a reception is optional, micro weddings will always need an officiant, witnesses, and a location for the ceremony. This could be someone’s backyard, the courthouse, a park or garden — the list goes on. Almost always, micro-wedding couples still spring for a photographer.

THE RIVERSIDE HOUSE

There are even vendors taking the micro wedding and really running with it. Some venues offer packages for a set price that include use of their space, an officiant, a photographer, seasonal floral, and more. The idea with these micro wedding packages is to keep it simple. The vendors have done the legwork of coordinating a beautiful little wedding — all the couple has to do is show up! In the end, one of the best things about a micro wedding is the intimacy. With fewer people to make small talk with, you’re able to get actual quality time with your guests. After all, these are the people that mean the most and the ones you can’t imagine your wedding day without.

A historic 1920s event venue that hosts wedding ceremonies, receptions and special events for small and large occasions.

At a micro wedding, you can enjoy their company — and your new spouse’s company! — without the sense of distraction that can sometimes come with a traditional wedding. Sound pretty heavenly? We think so too.

GETTING MARRIED AGAIN the second time around It’s no secret that men and women are getting married more than once nowadays. However, with the decision to wed a second or a third time, there are also the common worries about tradition and proper etiquette. Brides who are walking down the aisle for at least the second time tend to be more mature and ready to take on the world in a more sophisticated manner. Often, they are busy career women barely able to fit a wedding into their schedule. With commitments such as work, children and a personal life, it can be a tricky balancing act to plan a wedding during the prime of your life. WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN Many couples nowadays are choosing to have their children be part of the ceremony. For example, sons might play the part of an usher or even a ring bearer. Depending on the age of the children, the daughter can also take part in the ceremony as a flower girl or even as a bride’s maid. The bride’s son or daughter might stand next to the bride in a show that the groom is not only marrying the mother, but is also acknowledging he is taking the child as his own. THE RIGHT DRESS AND STYLE FOR YOU AND THE WEDDING PARTY Veils are not a good choice for second time brides as it reflects the innocence of the first time. However, white dresses are no longer taboo. The most important thing is to pick a dress, 22 • PREMIER BRIDE • WINTER/SPRING 2022

regardless of the color, that brings out the beauty of the bride. Hemlines are shorter and the colors are often soft and pastel. Overall, dresses tend to be less ornamental with better quality silk or silk satin and the train is not as long. Another trend for a second time bride is a hairstyle donning fresh flowers. Wedding parties also tend to be pared down and attendants are usually allowed to pick their favorite cocktail dress that is within the brides color scheme or theme.

WEDDING TRENDS Smaller, intimate weddings are definitely the norm for second time couples. Simple dinner parties or cocktail receptions are preferred over full-blown affairs and the bouquet and garter toss are absent and replaced by having the longest married couple in the room be awarded these items. PARTY TIME a guide to pre-wedding events When you get engaged, you’re not the only one excited to celebrate. Everyone from moms and aunts to friends old and new are standing by to help toast to your happiness. Let’s take a look at some of the ways brides and grooms are partying before the biggest party of them all. ENGAGEMENT PARTY After popping the question, pop the champagne! Engagement parties can be a fun, more-casual chance to get together with those nearest and dearest to celebrate the start of a new chapter in your life. You or a close family member or friend might host a little party, or you could meet out at a favorite bar or restaurant. Regale those gathered with your engagement story and get ready to start casually brainstorming your wedding.

26 • PREMIER BRIDE • WINTER/SPRING 2022

Consider this the kick-off to all the parties and planning yet to come. BRIDAL OR COUPLE’S SHOWER Traditionally, a bridal shower is meant solely for the ladies. Begin by consulting your wedding guest list. A bridal shower should involve all important women in your life, including extended family, friends, and wives of close friends. Minor acquaintances can remain off the bridal shower guest list. Showers are typically hosted by the mother of the bride or groom, an aunt, or member(s) of the bridal party. If possible, avoid hosting the shower yourself. Giftgiving is a bridal shower cornerstone, so it doesn’t send the right message to throw your own party.

In appreciation for everyone’s presents and presence, a meal or heavy appetizers are always served. Want to get modern with it? Consider hosting a couple’s shower, where the groom is present along with the most important men in your lives. You can also give any shower a modern twist by hosting it at a restaurant, brewery, or other public event space. Tip: Make sure to have enough items on your registry before sending invites to your shower, and make sure to include the registry link on the invitations. When it’s over, prompt thank-you notes are a must. BACHELORETTE PARTY Now’s your chance to let loose! Most bachelorette parties are friends-only affairs, so everyone feels free to let their hair down. You might spend a crazy night dancing on top of the nearest bar, but brides are also branching out. If you’re close with your mom, aunts, and your future mother-in-law, you can always extend the invite if so inclined. Instead of a night of drinking, a bachelorette party might involve a spa day, a trip to wine country, boating, theme parks, drag shows, shopping destinations, live music or theater, and the list goes on. Work with your Maid of Honor, or whoever is planning your party, to make it something that’s fun for not only yourself but the people who come out to celebrate with you. REHEARSAL DINNER With just one more sleep until the big day, the rehearsal dinner is, naturally, a chance to rehearse the ceremony and then enjoy a celebratory meal. Invite all immediate family, members of the wedding party and their dates, and any close extended family, such as grandparents. This is a chance to get up and say a few thankful words

to those people who matter most to you, and maybe hear some speeches by any family members or friends who aren’t speaking at the actual wedding. Typically, a rehearsal dinner is a bit more elegant, but it doesn’t have to be fussy. Nice-casual is a good vibe to aim for, so everyone feels comfortable. In the past, the groom’s family has been known to pick up the tab for the rehearsal dinner, but times and trends are changing. There are no hard and fast rules. BONUS PARTIES Some brides consider dress shopping a party. If you’re traveling to another city to shop, or if you’re inviting bridesmaids, aunts, and moms, the act of browsing dresses can suddenly become an allday affair. Lean into it and make the day feel festive! Enjoy mimosas and light appetizers while you shop, or plan a luncheon after a morning spent in bridal salons. This is something you, the bride, should plan and execute, since you will be the point of contact with any bridal shops you’re visiting and can coordinate timing from there. Another mini party that some brides plan is a bridesmaid brunch or luncheon. If all of your bridesmaids are in town a day or two prior to your wedding, get the girls together for some quality time and yummy food. This is a great way to gather under one roof and get on the same page about the wedding day timeline and field any final questions. Lastly, when the wedding is over, there’s still a chance for one final party: the post-wedding gift opening. Many couples and their families opt to meet the day after the wedding to share a meal, relive last night’s events, and watch the happy couple unwrap any presents. Having a gift-opening is by no means mandatory. PremierBrideFlorida.com

UNCOMPLICATE CATERING a few tips Planning the wedding feast doesn’t have to be complicated. A good caterer will deliver an excellent meal and impeccable service within the specifications of your contract and budget.

Then add an additional 10 percent to cover overage and approximately 18 to 25 percent for gratuities. Don’t forget to add your local applicable taxes and any extras that aren’t included in the price.

A professional caterer should share your enthusiasm for pleasing each guest, but that’s not the only qualifier. You’ll want to address budget, service, the meal itself, and a variety of details with your caterer to make sure that the qualifications match the enthusiasm. FINDING PROFESSIONAL SERVICE There is no substitute for professionalism and experience. When selecting your caterer, get sound referrals and observe the professionalism of the staff. Extremely attentive service for a sit-down meal or cocktail party would require one server for every 10 guests. For a buffet the number is significantly less with one server per every 50 guests. Service is still quite good with one server for every 15 to 20 guests for a sit-down dinner. Your caterer will be able to explain these ratios and make suggestions for the best service style and the appropriate number of servers for your budget. A MEAL TO REMEMBER To ensure a quality meal, schedule a meeting with the chef who will prepare it. It is also appropriate to request a private dinner sampling for you and your groom. Remember, your enjoyment there will be the measure of your guest’s enjoyment at your wedding reception. CATERING BUDGET The best way to determine the catering budget is to decide how much you will spend on each guest. Multiply that dollar amount by the number of guests expected. 32 • PREMIER BRIDE • WINTER/SPRING 2022

DOWN TO DETAILS Once you’ve decided on a caterer, take the time to determine as many additional details as possible. Have a firm agreement, and thoroughly examine your contract. Make sure it clearly states dates, costs and when deposits are due. Your contract should also specify the food and beverages to be served and stipulate the number of servers needed. Check to see that all the services you requested are listed in the contract such as centerpieces, the wedding cake, decorations for the room and head table and other labor intensive additions such as ice sculptures or any other additional needs. Carefully review postponement policies and cancellation policies. If you have any questions or concerns, this is the time to openly discuss them with your caterer. PremierBrideFlorida.com

MAKE YOUR DAY UNIQUE make your wedding your own By adding a couple of personal touches to your wedding, you’ll offer guests an inside look into your love story and the chance to be part of a meaningful, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Start with the invitations. A picture of you two or a personalized map of the city that includes your favorite hot spots are great ways to set an intimate tone for the big day. For the ceremony, consider writing your own vows. Think of your favorite romantic song lyrics or poetry to express your commitment. As your guests file into the reception, seat them at tables with names, not numbers. If you met in a Literature class, send everyone to tables named after authors you read together. It will provide them with a conversation

piece and a little insight into an interest you share or how you met. After the toasts, surprise the guests by raising your glasses to them. Thank them for being there and share your appreciation for all their support. Everyone will love being addressed as an integral part of your day. Don’t forget about the dancing! For your first dance as a married couple, take tango or ballroom classes and relish the opportunity to show off your new moves with a choreographed number. If you’re really brave, invite your whole bridal party in on the action! Personalizing your wedding simply means bringing a little bit of “YOU” into the day.

CATERING

FEASTS WITH FLAIR saying “I do” to cuisine and a caterer As couples get more adventurous with their cuisines, caterers are offering more bold flavors, meaningful meals, and interactive experiences. From grazing tables to lite bits to gourmet tacos, caterers are doing it all with extra faire and presentation. While staying true to the feel and theme of your wedding, there are so many options for creativity and personalization Ethnic cuisine is a great way to bring a little flavor to your reception. Take your guests around the world with a variety of food stations. Think about hosting each of your favorite meals. The more you embrace what makes you unique, the more memorable your wedding will be. Food trucks are another popular way to up the fun factor, and late-night snacks like popcorn, pizza, or grilled cheese sliders are a huge hit with guests. Add Mocktails to the Menu. Planners are recognizing trends of attendees cutting back on cocktails. Serving zero-proof drinks that have the same fizz, color and flavor lets your guests still feel like they’re drinking something festive. It can reduce the risk of attendees becoming intoxicated and as a bonus are typically less expensive. In recent years, there’s also been an emphasis not only on unique meals, but locally sourced, quality ingredients. Couples like to support local purveyors, since hosting a locally harvested meal means they’re not only building up their own community, but also enjoying the freshness of a farm-totable feast. 7 STEPS TO HIRING A CATERER From research to getting it in writing, we’ll walk you through it. PremierBrideFlorida.com

STEP 1: START THE SEARCH Once you secure a reception site, your catering search can begin. Some reception locations require that you use their in-house caterer or banquet services, which makes your choice simple. This usually applies to venues like hotels and country clubs. If your reception location allows you to bring in an independent caterer, you still might have to choose from a pre-approved list. If you’re able to choose your own caterer, try to narrow down your options to no more than three. Otherwise, after a month of tastings, all the flavors will blur together. As you call caterers to inquire after their services, make sure to have as much information on hand as possible. They’ll want to know your wedding date, time, approximate number of guests, and whether you’d like a sit-down, family-style, food stations or buffet-style meal. If you already have some ideas for your menu or any specific limitations (think vegetarian or gluten free), let the caterer know so they can better prepare for the initial meeting. Ask to see sample wedding menus and references. STEP 2: DECIDE ON YOUR STYLE With all the general specifics such as serving style in place, it’s time to factor in your wedding’s style and degree of formality. Right off the bat, caterers will want to talk about your personal tastes (and budget!). Don’t be afraid to disclose your food budget as it will make the process easier. Think about the vibe your wedding — is it a classic ballroom affair or a rustic outdoor bash? Such details will help a caterer determine what they can offer that falls in line with your budget and vision. WINTER/SPRING 2022 • PREMIER BRIDE • 39

FEASTS WITH FLAIR

STEP 3: SCHEDULE A TASTING When you finally narrow down your list of prospective caterers, it’s time for the fun part — tastings! Speak up during your tastings and don’t be afraid to ask if they can tweak something to your tastes. This is your day and your meal, and any good caterer will be pleased to work with your wishes as much as they can. STEP 4: FINALIZE THE MENU Gather inspiration from magazines, websites, and bridal shows to clarify what you like and dislike in a wedding meal. Think about weddings you’ve attended or ask friends for favorites and failures. Your caterer will also be a great resource to bounce ideas around and finally craft a menu that’s perfect for you. When in doubt, ask your caterer and trust them. They’ve seen lots of weddings and know what works best for the number of people, time of day, and location, so take their professional advice to heart.

STEP 5: CALCULATE THE COST Finalizing the menu and calculating the cost might happen somewhat simultaneously, since your budget will surely affect the direction of your wedding meal. Here’s a bit about what you can expect in terms of pricing: Facilities with in-house catering departments may have a minimum charge or set-up fee, while an independent caterer will usually work within any reasonable, agreed-upon budget. Keep in mind that buffets are usually priced higher since they’ll have to account for a little more per person. Caterers usually require your final guest count one week before the wedding. This is the number of people you’ll actually be charged for, though most caterers will factor in a few last-minute guests, too. Include any wedding-related personnel, such as the DJ, musicians, photographer, and

on-site coordinator. If cost is an issue, ask your caterer about more casual meals for vendors. Finally, make sure to ask what extras are included in the catering cost. Find out if your caterer will provide table linens, plates, glasses, crystal, silverware, and serving pieces — otherwise you’ll need ample time to make other arrangements. STEP 6: HIRE THE SERVERS With a finalized menu all priced out and good to go, it’s time to determine how many wait staff you’ll need to serve the feast and keep the reception running smoothly. Your caterer will give you their expert opinion, but a safe bet is one server for every 10 to 12 guests for a sitdown dinner, and two servers for every 50 guests for a buffet-style dinner. If you’re

having a full open bar, that will require one bartender for every 60 guests. Make sure to talk with your caterer ahead of time to make sure that the servers’ style of dress works with the style of your wedding. STEP 7: GET IT IN WRITING Sign a contract with your caterer only after you have all the details spelled out: date, time, address of site, food items by course, beverages and bar guidelines, number of guests covered, provisions for special meals, time of cocktail hour, time meal is served, contact people, number of wait staff and bartenders, linens, terms of payment, and liability insurance. There will probably be an advance deposit when you sign the contract — and don’t forget to check the cancellation policy.

THE PLACE SETTING elevate your reception tables within your budget Do you have a budget for place settings? No? You are probably not alone. Many couples don’t think about “place settings” but we hope this pictorial will help you change the way you think about your table décor! Amplified place settings are not a necessary part of the wedding….but they are an aspect of your design that will “wow” your guests and leave them with a lasting impression. This pictorial is going to lead you through a succession of price points per place setting and themes. They were allowed to create these looks with an unlimited budget per table setting. When planning your place setting look, make sure you find out what is included by your catering company and/or venue with your rental. Tips on creating budget friendly place settings: • Use a patterned or unique napkin. Simply having another color or texture on the table can give your table look an augmented look.

• Chargers create a look of depth by layering your place setting. Different types of charges have different price points but typically range from $0.75 to $6 per piece. • Adding a colored water glass can give a fun look to your table with a multi-dimensional colored element on your table. • Flat wear. Selecting a gold or black flat wear can definitely change the entire look of your table. • Keep in mind that other elements also play a huge factor in the overall look of your table; flowers and centerpieces, name cards, menu cards and other paper goods. • If your budget does not allow you to provide a customized place setting for every guest, focus on the sweetheart table and/or the head table with your wedding party. • We encourage everyone to work with their professional wedding vendors. For centuries churches and synagogues have been the traditional choice for the sacred act of exchanging vows. Lending an air of reverence and dignity to even the most casual of ceremonies, these holy places have created the perfect setting for the formal commitment of marriage. There are many unique options for couples who, for whatever reason, would prefer an alternate location. These locations usually have fewer rules and guidelines than other formal houses of worship, yet still provide a spiritual setting. Have the ceremony at the reception venue. Couples often choose this option as a convenience for their guests, minimizing the distance one must travel from ceremony to reception. Facilities that provide this option normally have separate areas for each event, or a plan for quickly converting the room. Sometimes places with the most personal significance make the best ceremony locations. For example, a park you walked through on your first date, the backyard where one of you grew up or a relative’s home where you enjoy spending time are all good choices. If you love the outdoors, consider holding your ceremony at a city park, the beach, a zoo, or even at the foot of a national landmark.f you’re a little on the daring and outrageous side, you might consider exchanging vows while sky diving from a plane, scuba diving, or in a hot air balloon. Whatever your preference, there is no right or wrong way to say “I do.” PremierBrideFlorida.com

CAKES + SWEETS

YOUR WEDDING CAKE a sweet ending to your special day DESSERT DECISIONS When deciding on your wedding cake or dessert, start by considering the rest of your wedding. The look and feel of your sweet treat should match your day, whether that’s classic elegance, rustic romance, whimsical fun, or megawatt glam. For a black-tie wedding, a traditional cake is probably the way to go. If your wedding is outdoors or in a rustic barn, a traditional cake, bunt cake or latticetopped pies are a charming choice. A candy buffet, ice cream sundaes or everyone’s favorite boost, a coffee bar, are fitting additions to any celebration. As you style your dessert, think about what speaks to you as a couple. Are you both big movie buffs? Work your love of cinema into the cake with fondant rolls of film and famous characters perched on each tier. Did the groom propose in Paris? Find a baker who can craft a veritable Eiffel Tower of cupcakes, brimming with French romance. If you have a uniquely sweet idea, seek out a professional who can bring your vision to life. TIERED STYLE Tiered cakes are a timeless choice for a reason — they’re impressive, eyecatching, and make for a very pretty picture. There’s no end to the myriad of styles you can apply to this classic design. Tiers might be adorned with textural elements or ruffles for a cake with lots of delightful dimension. Metallic luster or edible sequins and gold leafing bring the glam. For more colorful weddings, consider a painted, illustrative, or ombre cake that draws out the color story of your wedding. Watercolor, geode, sculptural, or tile-inspired designs are modern PremierBrideFlorida.com

showstoppers, while painted or fondant monogramming and lace details are a classic, elegant way to go. DECORATIVE DISPLAYS While a lone tiered cake can be a stunner, there are lots of ways to feature your dessert table as décor. Instead of just one large wedding cake, consider three to five smaller tiered cakes displayed at staggered heights. Cupcakes are another way to expand your wedding cake’s presence: Try showcasing the central cake surrounded by towers of matching cupcakes. You can even place a small cake at the center of each dinner table so the dessert can double as a centerpiece. A LITTLE VARIETY Wedding dessert doesn’t have to stop at cake. In fact, many couples are embracing variety these days, to the delight of their guests. It’s not uncommon to see a traditional cake paired with other sweets like cookies, truffles, or whole tables chock full of candy. Candy also makes a great favor, as you can give each guest a cute bag for filling with candies of their choice. You can even think further outside the box to make your dessert experience an exceptionally memorable one. Having an outdoor wedding? Invite guests to roast marshmallows and stack their own s’mores, or build their own sundaes, complete with a well-stocked toppings bar. You could even serve your all-time favorite sweets. Do you share a donut or chocolate chip cookie obsession? A display brimming with deep-fried confections or loads of cookies can be fun and whimsical. WINTER/SPRING 2022 • PREMIER BRIDE • 63

YOUR WEDDING CAKE

SWEETS TO SIP Who says dessert must be merely edible — why not drinkable, too? For winter weddings, hot chocolate bars are a cozy way for guests to warm up. Have helpyourself hot cocoa dispensers with an array of toppings: marshmallows, fresh whipped cream, chocolate drizzle, and peppermint stirring sticks. Consider hiring a barista for a portion of the evening to whip up lattes, cappuccinos, and espresso drinks to compliment pastries, biscotti, and specialty chocolates. FINDING A BAKERY Whatever you decide on, take advantage of all food tastings. That shouldn’t be hard to do when desserts on the tasting menu! Go with your gut and choose the dessert you deem the tastiest, but also factor in the bakery’s efficiency and professionalism. The baker should return your calls and emails in a timely manner, be flexible with

your needs, have some familiarity with your reception venue, and guarantee ontime delivery, set-up, serving, and cleanup (if needed). PRICING Wedding cakes are typically priced by the slice, depending on the style, ingredients, size, and embellishments. Your reception site might also charge a plating fee, often per person, to cut and serve the cake. THE FIRST BITE If you’re planning on a traditional cake cutting, make sure you have a knife and lifter set to go; these might be engraved with your initials or decorated with ribbons in your wedding colors. Traditionally, the bride grasps the knife with her right hand and the groom covers her hand with his as they cut the cake together — and the crowd goes wild!

DAY OF A LIFETIME trust the professionals After months of fittings, tastings, and planning down to the very last detail, the day you’ve always dreamed of will seem to come and go in a blur. That’s why quality photography is a must! You want to be able to preserve the day and look back on everything that happened. Through pictures captured in a style that speaks to you, you can remember, relive, and cherish each moment for the rest of your lives. From falling in love with a dreamy online portfolio to the nitty gritty of contracts, let’s look at the process of finding a photographer that’s your perfect match. DEFINE YOUR STYLE Wedding photography is more than just documenting the event. The right photographer for you will capture the spirit of you as a couple, as well as your day. While other factors come into play when choosing a photographer, determining a style that speaks to you is the first order of business. Below are a few styles you might encounter as you start your search. Documentary: Candid, spontaneous, not styled or posed. Capturing moments as they happen; shots of decorative details, action, and people. This style is currently trending, as couples gravitate toward the effortless, unforced feel of documentarystyle photos. Portrait: Classic and posed. Poses can be staged with traditional backdrops, such as a church alter, or more creative, holding hands in front of a vibrant city mural. Portrait doesn’t mean dull or dated, it just means the scenery and composition are thoughtfully arranged. Fine Art or Edgy & Bold: Dramatic and dreamlike, with interesting angles and framing. Might use more muted tones 66 • PREMIER BRIDE • WINTER/SPRING 2022

for a film-like effect. These photos will represent the photographer’s vision, so if you love an artist’s unique style, fine art photography could be a great fit. Many photographers can do a blend of these styles, so don’t worry so much about being pigeon-holed into one or another. In the end, worry less about what a photographer calls their style and more about whether or not their work makes you happy. SHOP AROUND Once you’ve established your target style, it’s time to shop around. Collect referrals from friends, review local wedding magazines and websites, and check out bridal shows near you. Browsing local photographers’ websites, blogs, Facebook pages, and Instagram feeds is the quickest way to get a feel for the talent in your area. But beware of amateur photographers with limited real-world experience. Just because someone takes pretty iPhone photos, launches a website, and has a business card, that doesn’t make them a professional photographer. Choose someone with a strong portfolio of quality work, testimonials from happy clients, the right gear, well-thought-out contingency plans, and a professional attitude. MEET IN PERSON Once you’ve made a shortlist of potential photographers that seem to check all your boxes, it’s time to meet. Don’t underestimate this step! Even if your artistic visions align, it’s just as important that your personalities click. Remember, this person is shadowing you on your wedding day! PremierBrideFlorida.com

DAY OF A LIFETIME

Ask yourself how this person will mesh with your friends and family, too. They should be professional, respectful, and know when to hang back, while also being bold enough to go after great shots and draw natural expressions from your guests. QUESTION & EVALUATE Only meet with photographers within your budget. It’s disappointing to fall in love with a photographer’s work only to later discover their rates exceed your spending allowance. At these meetings, ask to see a complete album of a wedding shot in a similar venue or with a style similar to yours. If you’re only gauging a photographer’s work off their online portfolio, you might be seeing a highlight reel. It’s best to get the whole picture. Have a critical eye when assessing wedding albums: Did they capture all the shots you’re hoping for? Are the images clear? How’s the composition? Is the lighting blown out, too dark, or just right? Some photographers are more skilled at capturing low-light images, so consider the time, season, and location of your wedding and chose a professional whose talents suit your needs. GET IT IN WRITING Photography packages vary from one professional to the next, so it’s critical to find out what’s included, as well as the cost of any add-ons. A photography package may or may not include the following: second shooters, additional hours, highres jpgs, photo albums, or engagement sessions. Some photographers offer such services a-la-carte, so you can choose only what’s of value to you. Speaking of files, ask any potential photographers how they back up your photos; if their answer doesn’t come 68 • PREMIER BRIDE • WINTER/SPRING 2022

swiftly and confidently, that can indicate a lack of professionalism. Also ask about their typical timeline for delivering proofs and final photos, and how you’ll receive them (small printed photos, an album, an online gallery, etc). Bear in mind that faster isn’t always better. Some professionals shoot weddings nonstop during the high season, then spend the next six months of the low season processing photos flawlessly. When you finally make your decision, get everything in writing. When is payment due? What’s the contingency plan should your photographer fall ill or have a family emergency? When will proofs be ready to view? Answering all of these questions up front will ease your mind and manage your expectations. DO A TRIAL RUN Nearly all photographers offer engagement shoots, either included in their wedding package prices or a-la-carte. If you’re on the fence about engagement photos, our advice is to go for it. An engagement session is a chance to get comfortable both with your photographer and together in front of the camera. CAPTURE MOMENTS THAT MATTER If there are friends and family that you want to be sure to snap a photo with or a particular time in the ceremony or reception that you want captured, it helps to put that in writing as well to help keep you and your photographer on track. Download our Ultimate Planner online at premierbride.com/planning where you’ll find a list of questions to ask your photographer and a checklist of can’t-miss moments. PremierBrideFlorida.com

PHOTOGRAPHY

A PICTURE PERFECT DAY finding a photographer that fits your style Wedding photography is more than just documenting the event – it’s about capturing the spirit of the couple and their day. Choose a photographer whose style matches yours. Formal or traditional: Posed, color photos of you, the groom, your respective families, and the wedding party; all the classic moments will be captured. Photojournalistic: Shot like a news event, capturing hundreds of candid moments and real emotions; more black and white photos for a timeless feel. Artistic: Special effects used to create dramatic, one-of-a-kind pieces of art. Many photographers offer a mix of these styles, so browse friends’ wedding albums, and surf professionals’ websites and blogs to find what speaks to you.

RESEARCH PHOTOGRAPHERS Once you’ve established your style, it’s time to shop around. Collect referrals from friends, review wedding resources like Premier Bride, and scope out local photographers’ websites and blogs. Make a short list of potential photographers that specialize in the style you desire and that suits your budget. Then set up a consultation. EVALUATE YOUR OPTIONS Do I like their work? Make sure you see examples of individual photos and complete wedding albums so you know what to expect in the end. Some larger studios employ more than one photographer; find out exactly who will be shooting your wedding. PremierBrideFlorida.com

A PICTURE PERFECT DAY

Do our personalities mesh? Of all your wedding vendors, the photographer is the one you’ll be working with most closely on your big day; it’s important that your personalities click. Am I staying within my budget? It’s disappointing to fall in love with a photographer’s work only to later discover their rates exceed your spending allowance. Do your best to meet only with photographers you can afford. WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE PACKAGE Most photographers offer “a la carte” or custom packages to meet your individual needs – just be sure to ask for specifics. Here are some examples of items that might interest you.

Prints: Don’t underestimate how many extra prints you might want, as this will definitely impact your budget. Proofs: Ask your photographer how many proofs you will get and in what format. WEDDING ALBUMS holding onto memories The entrance of the bride, the vows at the altar, your first married kiss, first dance, cake-cutting, joyful smiles and a champagne toast: your photographer will capture these and other memorable images on your wedding day. Your wedding album will hold these cherished family keepsakes, preserving and showing the memories of that special day.

So make sure it is as special as the photographs it preserves. You should make the decision on what style of wedding album you want when you first make arrangements to retain a photographer. Most wedding photographers include the cost of both your and your parent’s wedding albums in their overall package and samples should be on hand for your review. There are a variety of pre-made album styles to accommodate every budget. You can also customize a wedding album from a manufacturer or engage the services of a bookbinder to create a hand-made wedding album. Wedding album manufacturers offer thousands of choices of covers, spine sizes, and mounting configurations that will enable you and your photographer to construct a unique wedding album. If you want to preserve your wedding pictures, they can be put in a librarybound album and permanently sealed for better archival quality.

medieval tapestries to the wavy iridescence of silk moiré, as well as other durable man-made materials. By having your wedding album painstakingly produced by a bookbinder using hand-made papers and handstitched covers and spines, your choices increase according to your imagination. The art of custom bookbindery uses the age-old techniques of hand stitching, hand turning and embossing using such materials as strong, hard-wearing calfskin or hand-tooled silk to produce beautiful and enduring wedding albums. A skilled bookbinder can create an original design destined to become a highly prized family possession. Whether your wedding album is manufactured or handmade, acidfree pages and tissues rather than conventional matting are a must. Some matting production processes use acid in their paper, and such matting will degrade over time and chemically damage photographs. Acid-free pages and tissues can guarantee the durability of your memories. PremierBrideFlorida.com

Some time after your nuptials your photographer will send you the proofs or enlarged contact sheets of your wedding photos. Although these copies may not be perfectly printed or color-corrected, they will be clear enough for you to begin to choose the photos you want to include in your wedding album. Remember, you’re telling a story in pictures. Keep your album interesting with multi-size picture presentation, matching a large picture on one page with a facing page of smaller photos. You could try pairing tight shots with wide perspectives, or mixing and matching black and whites with color photographs. Some couples choose to have two wedding albums, one for more formal portraits and one for candid shots. Once you have assembled the pictures in a meaningful order, store them elegantly and request album boxes from your manufacturer or a custom box from your bookmaker.

HAVING FUN WITH PHOTOS unique ideas for your wedding Even though weddings are a testament of very personal love, sometimes the whole day can seem like a cookie-cutter type deal. But there’s almost nothing more personal than a photo, so use those to make your day one of a kind. For a couple of your photos at the wedding or reception, add a little personality by wearing fun sunglasses, a hat from your favorite sports team, or a very trendy item that might look hideous when you look back on the photo 15 years from now. The idea is to incorporate your personalities, and have some fun! Surround your engagement photo with a large, smooth, white mat, and display it with nice pens at the reception for people to sign.

You’ll have a personal touch around a beautiful photo of the day. Especially at huge reception halls and banquet rooms, the place can seem large and impersonal. By adding pictures from your parents and grandparents weddings framed nicely throughout the room, the room will become a little more intimate. It’s also a nice way to honor deceased relatives or long-standing marriages. Here’s a fun, crowd-pleasing, partyenhancing idea: rent a photo booth to have at the reception. Your guests will have a great time entering the booth, posing for photos both lovely and silly.

Know what you want. Are you looking for image files? A photo album? Most women don’t choose to display the images on the wall so there are less options; check with your photographer to see what they offer. Choose the Right Outfits. There’s no right and wrong here; choose outfits that have the most meaning to you and your husband-to-be. Consider wearing his work clothes or incorporating hobbies. Pairing sexy and sporty gives you a great combination. Accessorize. This is the fun part. Bring hats, scarves, shawls, jewelry, sunglasses, feathers, umbrellas or even his power tools! The options are endless, but choose items you enjoy most.

HIRE A PROFESSIONAL new on the horizon If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video must be worth a million. With a professional videographer by your side, you can relive the sights and sounds of your wedding day for years to come. These memories in motion are priceless, and it’s worthwhile to have it done right. PROFESSIONALS & ARTISTS Professional videographers have dramatically improved the quality of wedding videos in recent years. They have the technology, talent, and time necessary to produce videos with excellent quality, clear audio, crisp visuals, and sharp editing. A good videographer is an artist who will remain inconspicuous throughout the day, yet find a way to capture intimate, uninhibited moments of you and your guests.

These days, creativity knows no bounds. The art of videography has experienced a sort of revolution in recent years, with professionals dedicating their time and talents strictly to video. Today’s filmmakers use the latest technology and storytelling techniques to create stunning and highly-personalized wedding films. Choose a videographer with a style that speaks to you, whether it’s classic and even-paced, quick and contemporary, or even a little edgy. DRONE ON There are all kinds of tools available to videographers that offer Hollywoodstyle special effects, but drones certainly offer some of the most exciting opportunities to get creative. They can offer a sweeping, cinematic

VIDEOGRAPHY mood and breathtaking aerial views. While drone technology can be thrilling, it’s not without its boundaries. Make sure your videographer is licensed for drone flight. A drone pilot’s license is required by the FAA. If your videographer has a drone, make sure they’re aware of the rules before you hire them!

Pay close attention to make sure the film meets your expectations in terms of video detail and quality. Things to consider when viewing a sample video include the clarity and stability of the picture, as well as the videographer’s ability to smoothly edit and transition the material. Other things to keep in mind: audio, color, and emotional connections.

SPECIALS & SERVICES In addition to the final wedding video, some videographers offer sameday services such as rush editing of wedding day highlights or photo and video montages to show at your reception. Projectors for these shows are recommended and may also be available through your videographer. These upgradeable video services are especially fun and could add an extraspecial touch to your celebration.

VIDEOGRAPHY BUDGET Quality videography services can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $8,000. While that sounds like quite a sum, remember that your videographer will spend six to ten hours editing each hour of film. If they’re filming during the entire wedding day on multiple cameras, do the math. Why does it take so long? The process includes color matching, audio syncing, setting music, syncing footage from multiple angles, editing periods of silence, and adding transitions. Taking into account all of the professional equipment, experience, and time spent.

If you’re a high-tech couple, put your videographer to work before the wedding. Work together to create a video save-the-date for the folks on your guest list. You can save money by uploading this video to your wedding website, then sending friends and family an online invitation to view it. Video invites are modern, fun, personal, and, if worked in to your videography package, a potential money-saver. CHOOSING A VIDEOGRAPHER When researching videographers in your area, scope out their websites and social media accounts to get a taste of their style. If you can only find a short sample, ask the videographer if you can see a full-length version. This is critical, since short snippets shown on a videographer’s website tend to be more of a highlight reel. Have you ever seen a terrible movie that had an awesome trailer? It’s just like that. What really matters is the finished product, so make sure to base your decision on a final video rather than a teaser. PremierBrideFlorida.com

BUDGET TIP If your budget doesn’t allow for much now, it’s still worthwhile to invest in a quality videographer’s bare-bones package. You can always upgrade your package later, but securing great videography talent for your wedding date and time is a crucial first step. MEMORIES IN MOTION We all know the one big reason to invest in a wedding day video: You’ll have it forever to enjoy as a couple. So too will any guests who couldn’t make it to the celebration; having a video to share with family and friends who weren’t present on your wedding day will be a wonderful treat. And should there be kids in your future, think what a kick they’ll get out of watching your video. A once-in-a-lifetime day deserves the once-in-a-lifetime movie treatment to be preserved forever. Music is used throughout the years as a form of celebration, and will serve as getting the party going, and keeping it going for the entire night. MUSIC

FACE THE MUSIC the soundtrack to your wedding day Imagine a wedding without a soundtrack. Sounds crazy, right? From moving songs at the ceremony to classy cocktail hour tunes to the late-night dance jams, music does so much to set the tone at a wedding. Here are the many ways you might incorporate music into your wedding day, and some helpful tips for ensuring that your soundtrack goes off without a hitch. CEREMONY MUSIC What have you always envisioned for the soundtrack to your ceremony? A vocalist? String quartet? Solo pianist? When weighing your options for ceremony musicians, consider your vision, but also look to your wedding’s style and venue; make sure there is harmony between the location and the music you choose. Think back to past weddings you’ve attended. What did you like about the music for each ceremony? What didn’t work so well? Did you cry like a baby when friends of bride played a charming, acoustic tune? Did you cringe when the groom’s cousin, even with the best of intentions, sang entirely off-key? Your guests could likely react the same way, so choose wisely! Once you and your fiancé have some ideas in mind, check out local musicians.

PremierBrideFlorida.com

Visit bridal shows, review bridal publications and online sources like premierbride.com, or ask for referrals from recently married friends or from your ceremony officiant. You could also work with an experienced talent or booking agency that offers convenient, one-stop-shopping for all your wedding music needs. Narrow down your options, and arrange meetings to hear your musicians and singers in person before signing any contracts. After you’ve secured musicians for your ceremony, they can help you decide on what songs to include. Most musicians who specialize in weddings have a lot of valuable experience and will be a great resource for song suggestions. Your ceremony officiant will also be helpful in guiding your musical selections. Also, you may have to have the music approved by the officiant, depending on your ceremony location. COCKTAILS AND DINNER MUSIC Background music is a must for bringing romance to the latter part of your wedding day. Conversation is key during cocktails and dinner, so the tunes should set the mood, but not intrude. You have three main options: use the musicians that played during your ceremony, use

the band or DJ that will be playing at your reception, or hire entirely different musicians. If you decide to have live music, some solid options include chamber music, classical or acoustic guitar, or a jazz ensemble. Each of these offers subtle entertainment without overpowering the scene of mixing and mingling. A seasoned pianist can also be a fun choice if he or she can play a wide range of musical styles and take requests!

and with the tips included here, you’ll be able to confidently select an excellent entertainer and selection of dance tunes for your big day. First and foremost, ask yourself: live band or DJ? While there are pros and cons to each, it always comes down to personal taste and budget. Start researching musicians early in the wedding planning process. This way, once you find someone you like, availability is less likely to be an issue.

If you go with your reception’s DJ or band, make sure they keep it on the softer side. You might even want to make a list of songs to be played during this time to keep the soundtrack on, well, track.

Live music gives the evening a sort of festive energy and is a wonderful option if your budget allows. The key is finding a band that caters to weddings. These musicians offer versatility and will appeal to guests of all ages. Keep in mind that any live entertainment will require breaks, so find a solution that ensures music is always playing. If the band is large enough, it’s possible the band members can stagger their breaks so that someone is always playing. Or you can always configure a portable music-streaming and speaker hook-up to play some of your favorites that the band might not attempt. In terms of expense, a live band will almost always cost more than a DJ. Keep this rule in mind: if you can’t afford a good wedding band, hire a DJ. A DJ will be more cost-effective and can offer an almost infinite variety of music – truly something for everyone. Bonus: no breaks! Some keys to finding happiness in a DJ:

RECEPTION AND DANCING MUSIC Dinner and dessert are over — it’s time to hit the dance floor! Let’s face it, this is one critical decision that can make or break an entire wedding. Fortunately, most musicians who specialize in weddings are talented professionals, 82 • PREMIER BRIDE • WINTER/SPRING 2022

• If possible, see them live before booking. • Consider personality. Are you looking for a crazy-fun, “put a ring on it” party animal or an upscale, keep-it-classy entertainer? Ask for, and follow up on, several references. • Clarify what songs and events (first PremierBrideFlorida.com

dance, father & bride dance, bouquet & garter toss, etc.) you do or do not wish to include. Decide on the details ahead of time; make a “do not play” list of any songs you simply can’t stand and a “must play” list of songs you don’t want to miss. All things considered, whether you go for a band or a DJ, your dance party will be a guaranteed success as long as you treat your guests to a wide variety of music. From Frank Sinatra to Whitney Houston to Béyonce, diversity is key in playing a little something for everyone. THE NITTY GRITTY Consider your ceremony and reception site and how this might impact your choice of music and entertainment. Communicate with your site manager so you’re aware of any restrictions and so that he/she is aware of your plans ahead of time. If your entertainment has never performed at your chosen ceremony or reception site before, ask the site manager when they can visit the venue to make sure it meets their needs in terms of space, electricity, and lighting. As with other wedding vendors, make sure the ins and outs of your agreement with your musicians is very clear and in writing. This includes payment, start and end times, fees for playing overtime, alternate plans if a musician is sick the day of your wedding, etc. If any of your vendors don’t use a contract, put all the details into a document and send one to the vendor and keep one for your records. Confirm all the details with your musicians about one week prior to your celebration. Once you’ve done your homework, hired musicians for each stage of your wedding day, and worked out the details, you can rest easy. That is, until it’s time to start practicing your dance moves. OF YOUR DRE AMS Through decades of evolving wedding traditions and styles, certain things remain constant like a bride’s white dress and gorgeous flowers to adorn the day. FLOWERS AND MORE

WHERE TO START Without even knowing it, your floral research has probably already begun. Any time you admire a blooming centerpiece, dreamily eye flowers at the local farmers’ market, or pin a stunning bouquet to your wedding Pinterest board, you’re developing your own taste in flowers. Keep doing this as you prepare to meet your florist. Create a flowers-only Pinterest board to gather images that you love, and maybe some that you don’t. It helps to have lots to show your potential florist. It’s also critical to have a set budget. FINDING A FLORIST If possible, book a florist 8 to 10 months before your wedding. Select up to four florists to meet with in-person as any more would be overwhelming. Your goal is to find someone who is organized, professional, and whose style and personality meshes with your own. Have a budget in mind. Know your wedding colors and ceremony and reception locations. If you have a picture of your wedding dress and any fabric swatches from the bridesmaid dresses, bring those along as well. The right florist will take all of these elements (your style, venue, and budget) and create something special just for you. Florists know which flowers will and won’t wilt in the sun, which are best for indoors, and which will work better in a centerpiece rather than in a bouquet. Foster open communication from the start and hire someone you can trust. FOR YOU AND YOUR WEDDING PARTY You’ll first want to determine the look of your bridal bouquet. All other floral pieces will take their cue from this piece. This is the perfect opportunity to bring your style and personality to the forefront. Full, rounded bouquets are gorgeous, as are cascading bouquets which are a classic choice making a modern comeback. 86 • PREMIER BRIDE • WINTER/SPRING 2022

Today’s cascades are a loose, more natural style of bouquet. Also on trend are dried floral elements combined with fresh blooms for gorgeous texture and dimension. Then there’s the wedding party flowers: Just as bridesmaids might mix-andmatch dresses, you can also mix-andmatch bouquets and boutonnieres. Remember to also consider corsages and boutonnieres for parents, grandparents, and other important people. These miniature arrangements have been updated in recent years. Corsages often take shape on metal cuff bracelets, while a spray of small flowers makes an easy pocket boutonniere. FOR THE CEREMONY If you’re having your ceremony in a place of worship, check with your officiant for any restrictions before finalizing the flowers. Consider aisle adornments and arrangements — such as an arch, swag, or spray — to frame your vows. Oftentimes ceremony flowers can play double duty by adorning the ceremony as well as the reception hall. FOR THE RECEPTION There’s an endless array of options for floral reception centerpieces: elegant vases filled with cut flowers, footed pedestals brimming with blooms, glorious bunches of wildflowers, assorted small vases with single stems, nature-inspired elements, and so much more. You may even think beyond the tabletops themselves in favor of hanging floral installations. Use your imagination to incorporate flowers into one-of-a-kind centerpieces and scenesetters that reflect your style and your wedding’s theme. Keep in mind that the height of the arrangements shouldn’t get in the PremierBrideFlorida.com

FLOWERS

way of conversation. Florists can create centerpieces at a variety of heights: all high, all low, or half and half, usually with three different styles. The key is to either make the arrangements low enough to talk over or high enough to talk under. A riser or vase that is about 24 to 32 inches will elevate above the conversation as long as the vase is narrow enough to talk around. If your bridal party bouquets are doubling as decoration at the reception, equally spacing the bouquets at the head table is a lovely way to go. Finish off the table with a garland of greenery laced with flowers for a gorgeous effect. If your budget allows, consider adding floral flourishes throughout the reception hall to tie everything together. Thinking big, a gorgeous floral backdrop certainly makes for a fabulous photo-op.

A ceremony arch could even double as a sort of floral photo booth during the reception. On a smaller scale, your florist might sprinkle flower petals on serving trays or trim the dessert table with an extra flourish. Simple greenery placed throughout the venue is also a lovely way to bring the outdoors in. Run any and all ideas past your florist so they can help you refine your vision, stay within your budget, and create a beautiful, memorable ambiance. FLOWERS IN ALL SEASONS Everything has its season, and flowers are no exception. In fact, seasonality plays an even bigger role when it comes to florals. One of the most important things for you and your florist to factor into your choice of flowers is the season in which your wedding falls. You’ll find flowers that bloom during the month of your wedding will be more affordable and will last longer

KEEPING IT CLASSIC No doubt roses are the most widely used flower in wedding arrangements. These timeless blooms are available in three grades: fancy, extra fancy, and select. Florists rarely deal with fancy roses. These are most commonly found in supermarkets and they tend to wilt rapidly. Roses that are of top quality will last the longest. Traditional bouquets are all white and can combine an array of blossoms that are unique in shape and size. It’s also possible to have a vibrantly colored bouquet that still reflects classic styles and shapes. Whatever your wedding’s theme and style, by collaborating with a professional florist, you’re sure to have the flowers of your dreams. Work together, but always remember to trust your florist’s expertise. In doing so, your wedding flowers will be the envy of all. PremierBrideFlorida.com

INVITATIONS

WEDDING INVITATIONS the first impression

GETTING STARTED Traditional wedding invitations include so many tiny etiquette details from how to address each envelope to arranging the many parts and pieces. To keep all the invitation details straight, it’s best to find a qualified local professional to act as your go-to person for all paper goods and etiquette questions. Or if you choose to purchase online, give yourself some extra time in case there are any problems that require shipping back and forth. It’s also smart to test-drive an online retailer before committing (ask for paper samples, etc.). The sooner you start on invitations, the better. Before you choose a style of invitation, it’s crucial to know some of the broad themes of your wedding: casual vs. formal, bold colors vs. soft hues, rustic vs. black tie, etc. Knowing these key details will help you find or create invitations to reflect the style of your day.

If possible, order invitations and other wedding stationery six or more months before the big day to give yourself plenty of time for proofreading, printing, addressing and envelope stuffing. Formal invitations should be sent six to eight weeks before the wedding with save-the-dates going out months in advance. Save-the-date cards, or even an in-formal conversation with your guests, are especially important for out-of-town guests. Plenty of advance notice gives traveling guests enough time to book flights and lodging with some flexibility. PremierBrideFlorida.com

INVITATIONS CREATIVE THINKING While formal invitations, complete with calligraphy and foil-lined envelopes are never out of style, the breadth of invite design options has grown immensely. The use of watercolor and illustrated elements is also growing to such an extent that many stationery companies now have a resident artist to accommodate those personalized, handmade touches. Beyond formal calligraphy, you might choose whimsical hand-lettering or even white ink on dark envelopes. Dress up your invites with a belt or sash wrapped around the middle. Hand-drawn embellishments, a chalkboard look, and vintage-inspired designs are also lovely if they work with the style of your wedding. PAPER PARTS & PIECES Wedding invitation suites typically consist of several parts: a ceremony card with the details of the ceremony, a reception card explaining reception details, a response card with its stamped/addressed envelope (yes, it’s proper etiquette to provide return postage), a map or some other card with directions to the ceremony/reception and hotel information for out-of-town guests, and an inner and outer envelope. The rules aren’t hard and fast, however, you can combine information on a single card, omit the tissue paper, or really think outside the box with your design if that suits the style of your wedding day. INVITATION WORDING Traditionally, whoever is hosting (read: paying for) the wedding will be listed first on the invitation. But it’s best to work this out on a case-by-case basis with open communication between the couple, the bride’s parents, and the groom’s parents. Some couples today who are paying for the majority of their wedding say “Mary Bride and John Groom, together with their families, request the honor of your presence at their marriage.” PremierBrideFlorida.com

ADDRESSING ADVICE To address the envelopes, you can run them through your printer in a beautiful font, hand-write them yourself, or hire a hand-letterer to do the job for you. Hand lettering gives a beautiful first impression and can even act as a sort of frameable gift to your guests. Avoid using labels at all costs, even clear ones as they just don’t convey an elegance or special-ness that a wedding deserves. If you want to keep things formal/classic, here are some tips for the etiquette of addresses. Street names, cities, and states should be written out completely (no abbreviations). To address a married couple, use “Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smith.” For an unmarried couple living together, use “Mr. Tom Smith and Miss Judy Jones.” If every member of the family is invited, use “Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smith & Family.” If you don’t want young children at your reception, then politely say “adults only” somewhere in the invite. Include your return address on the back of the envelope. Placing it on the back is less crowded and leaves room for the guest’s address to shine on the front. You’ll also want to make sure that the return address matches the primary host. Is it Mary Bride and John Groom, or Mary’s parents? WINTER/SPRING 2022 • PREMIER BRIDE • 91

TR ANSPORTATION

LIMOS, TROLLEYS AND MORE Here are some tips to make your transport as fun, affordable and memorable as the rest of your day. First decide how many you’re moving. Do you want just the bride and groom in a car, or the entire wedding party? Once you make those decisions, start shopping around based on size. Whatever you decide on, keep safety in mind for when revelers are bouncing from place to place.

LIMOS A limo can be booked for a day, so you could get a ride to pick you up at the house and deliver you to the ceremony and reception. Most companies have a minimum for their services, so think about the most cost-effective way to go if you want something for before and after the reception. Many options exist for limos. A formal seats four, but a stretch can seat as many as 10. For larger parties, sport utility models like the Hummer and Explorer are popular and flashy. Larger models are often posh, with decorative interiors.

CATCH THE COACH For larger parties, a party bus or luxury coach is a great way to travel. It’s got all the amenities of a luxury limousine, but they’ll seat up to 10 people comfortably. Or, for bigger parties, a passenger coach or party bus can seat 21-49 people. The size and type of coach will determine the hourly rate. Depending on the size of your party it may make sense to hire two coaches. PremierBrideFlorida.com

TRANSPORTATION TAKING THE TROLLEY A picturesque alternative is a trolley. They’ll generally accommodate between 20 and 35 people, so it’s great for larger parties. With their old world charm, they’ll send a lovely, elegant touch to this wedding day detail. Since most have outdoor decks, these are especially fun if small towns so you can take a peek outside and watch onlookers wave at newlyweds.

Congratulations

UNIQUE ALTERNATIVES Some new couples might opt for something more personal or creative. A horse-drawn carriage is a romantic, vintage option, especially if you can decorate it with your wedding colors. Vintage cars are also great photo ops. An antique Rolls Royce or a ’69 Mustang are chic. Ride in style like the royal couple did in a decorated navy soft-top Aston Martin Volante. Or, as with everything else in the wedding, make sure the transportation connects to YOU. Maybe you met at a Harley rally – ride off on your twin Hogs! Or maybe you share a love of mountain biking – don’t be afraid to wheel over on a tandem together.

DOWN TO DETAILS Make sure to confirm booking well in advance of your wedding dates. And don’t be afraid to ask for a test drive! Look for these in a written contract: • Name and contact information for you and the company • Date, time and address of all pick-up and drop-off locations • Type and number of vehicles rented, and amenities supplied with each • Exact hours of vehicle rental • Total cost, including gas, mileage, tip and overtime fees • Deposit amount, balance, due date and cancellation policy PremierBrideFlorida.com

LUXURY COACHES alternate transportation Usually when you think wedding transportation, you think limousine. Limousine service has been a bridal standard for years and still continues to be a wonderful option. Depending on the location and size of your wedding, however, you may choose the newest alternative in wedding transportation--a luxury coach. Comfortable, mobile and spacious, it’s the ultimate in luxury.

A luxury coach has a lot more going for it than luxury, though. It’s the perfect solution to a ceremony site without a changing room. You and your attendants can enjoy your time together as you get ready in the plush surroundings. After the ceremony the bridal party can enjoy a private celebration with the bride and groom on the way to the reception. Parking is another obstacle that the luxury coach easily overcomes. If the only downside to your dream reception is the price your guests will pay to park, eliminate the problem. Transport them from the ceremony to the reception in a passenger coach. These coaches generally seat 21-49 passengers. If you hire more than one transport you can accommodate those guests who need to leave at an early hour. Coaches are also a great solution for remote locations or those with limited access. As do the majority of limousine companies, passenger and luxury coach companies require a minimum number of hours. The size and type of coach determine the hourly rate, which is generally comparable to that of a limousine. PremierBrideFlorida.com

BRING YOUR CALENDAR If interested, make an appointment for a follow-up consultation after the show. Vendors want to talk to you but they also need to respond to other couples at the show as well. You probably won’t get their full attention at the show unless there are multiple people working the booth, so be sure to make an appointment to get some one on one time. READY TO MAKE DECISIONS If you’re comfortable and ready to make a decision, show specials can really make it worth your while! Many vendors determine if it’s a good show for them based on how many signed agreements they get. ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE Relax and enjoy the experience. These wedding professionals spend time and money to display their work and services. Take your time and don’t be afraid to “enter” the booth area. Look, touch and really see what is offered or get ideas. Vendors love brides in their booths. TALK TO THE VENDORS If a vendor catches your eye, don’t be shy! Just say hello to break the ice, followed by, “are you available for my wedding date?”, and the vendor will usually know how to get the ball rolling from there. MATERIAL HANDED OUT If a vendor is offering handout information you’re at all interested in, take one. You can review this information at your leisure once you get home. DON’T BE AFRAID TO MOVE ON Follow your gut instinct. If you’re put off by a service or certain vendor, move along.

HELLO GORGEOUS

BE AUT Y

beauty tips, makeup musts & more On your wedding day, it’s all eyes on the bride. From makeup to hair to nails, every blushing bride, mother-of-the bride/groom and bridesmaid wants to look their absolute best on the day of the wedding. We’ve got tips for the day itself and beautification plans to implement months before the big day. BEAUTY 101 What’s the difference between a makeup artist, cosmetologist, and esthetician? A makeup artist is the person a bride turns to on the day of her wedding, enhancing her own natural beauty. Cosmetologists do makeup, as well as, sometimes, skincare, nail care, and hair styling. Manicures and facials fall in the realm of cosmetology. Estheticians take things one step further. They perform services such as skincare treatments and hair removal that makeup artists and cosmetologists may not be licensed to. Each of these beauty professionals — whether in the weeks and months leading up to your wedding, or on the wedding day itself — can help you look your best.

scan me 98 • PREMIER BRIDE • WINTER/SPRING 2022

These pros can also provide you with great information, advice, and tips that will last a lifetime — a beauty investment! And when it comes to hair, a great hairstylist can help you create a look that complements your facial features, headpiece, and veil — and do so in a way designed to stay set through the last dance. When you go pro, the end result is a relaxed, picture-perfect bride. PremierBrideFlorida.com

BEAUTY GET GLOWING A great time to focus on healthy, glowing skin is when your wedding is still months away. If you’re concerned about the health and appearance of your skin, consider a visit to a dermatologist, for bigger problems, or an esthetician, for minor issues. Facials are a must for all skin types. Regular treatments result in refined pores, smoother facial lines, healed blemishes, and a more radiant complexion. For full-body beautification, body waxing is a good place to start. This is one of the longest-lasting forms of hair removal. Your legs will be smooth and free of razor stubble. If you’re of the opinion that a white gown’s best accessory is sun-kissed skin, you’re not alone. But before hitting the tanning beds or getting a spray-tan, consider that it’s so easy to come away from the tanning salon looking either beet red or pumpkin orange. Proceed with caution. HAIR DO’S AND DON’TS When choosing a hairstyle, consider your gown, the formality of your wedding, your personal style, your hair type and texture, and your face shape. Generally speaking, if your gown is elaborate, opt for a simpler hairstyle to avoid looking overdone. An updo is a classic way to go and is ideal for showing off a dramatic neckline. If you’re a trendy girl, try braids, hair extensions, or a tousled bohemian look. Just be cautious of overly-trendy styles, as you risk looking back at your photos and saying “What was I thinking?!” If you’re considering any drastic changes to your hairstyle, make the change at least a couple of months before the wedding. That way, if you don’t like it, you have plenty of time to make changes or figure out how to style it to your best PremierBrideFlorida.com

advantage. Consult your hair stylist four to six weeks before the wedding to find the right look for you, and be sure to show the stylist a photo of your gown. MAKEUP MUSTS Whether you hire a pro to do your makeup, have a friend do it, or do it yourself, do a trial run before the wedding. Now is the time to practice, not on the day of your wedding! Keep the makeup on throughout the trial day and see how it lasts. How does it look at two, five, and even eight hours later? Is it easy enough to touch up? The key to wedding makeup isn’t caking it on, but rather looking like a more polished version of yourself. Define your eyebrows with a pencil and try fake eyelashes so that your eyes really pop in photos. Try highlighting key places, a bold lip color, or using a primer under your foundation, lipstick, and eyeshadow so that it lasts longer. Waterproof mascara recommended! NAILS AND BROWS Regular manicures in the one or two months before your wedding day will get your nails in perfect shape. As a rule, it’s best to avoid really trendy nail polish colors. Play it safe and go with a classic, neutral color, so you’ll have no regrets years down the road. Have your eyebrows professionally shaped at least two weeks before the wedding. If you’ve never done this before, you’ll be amazed at how different you look with well-groomed brows! Some people may experience a red, rashlike reaction, so doing this early enough gives you time to recover if it happens to you. In the end, always remember that a bride’s best beauty secret is her smile!

YOUR DREAM DRESS making it a reality Even from a very young age, most girls daydream about their wedding dress. We’re constantly bombarded with movies, TV, and photos of pictureperfect, iconic brides. And what makes these brides iconic? The dress! Although finding the right dress for your wedding day isn’t as easy as daydreaming, we’re here to help with these bridal gown basics. GOWN STYLES Bridal attire ranges from extravagant princess gowns to tailored suits. There’s no rule saying a bride must wear a fancy gown. This is the age when brides dress for their own comfort level and personal style, but more polished. Even so, most brides stick with a dress. The strapless style is always a favorite, but the market has expanded in recent years to include gowns with all manner of straps, sleeves, and accessories. You’ll see many dresses that are modest in the front and dramatic in the back. Dresses are also belted, have convertible or removable cap sleeves, and come in an array of bold and muted colors in addition to just white. Some brides even wear more than one dress. They might choose a traditional gown for the ceremony and a short dress for the reception, so they can comfortably dance the night away. FABRIC & AFFORDABILITY Satin, tulle, and lace are the most common fabrics for wedding gowns, and the type of fabric you choose will greatly affect the price. If you’re dreaming of intricate, hand-stitched, Italian lace with delicate beading, the cost will rise, not to mention the price of alterations. But these days, it’s entirely possible to find designers that create gorgeous gowns with price PremierBrideFlorida.com

points that suit the mainstream bride. The professionals at your local bridal salon

will be able to help you determine which fabric and details fit within your budget. STARTING THE SEARCH Start by gathering ideas. Bridal magazines, designer websites, and Pinterest are a great source as you start the hunt for your wedding dress. Compile the styles you like that suit the mood of your wedding. Is your wedding venue a rustic lodge, classic ballroom, or ultramodern loft? Ask yourself, “What kind of dress makes sense for the activities of the day?” Also think about what kind of dress makes sense for you. Weddings are no longer strictly adhering to tradition, and brides are embracing this new mainstream by crafting weddings that are a true reflection of themselves, and that goes for bridal style, too. If you’re not into princess gowns, wear a white jumpsuit and sassy heels. If your wedding’s on a beach, don WINTER/SPRING 2022 • PREMIER BRIDE • 101

YOUR DREAM DRESS

a knee-length sheath and comfy sandals. Keep your vision of your true self in mind as you search for ideas. Then, make an appointment at your local bridal salon. Salons give you more bang for your buck and a better overall experience and value than an online retailer. At a salon, you can try on multiple styles free of charge, and you’re guaranteed to work with a consultant who has seen countless brides before you and can help discern the right style of dress for your body type. A local salon may also offer, or can at least refer you to, someone who can make alterations to the dress you choose.
When you go, invite a trusted team of family and friends to join you. You don’t need an army, just a few close people you can count on to tell you the truth. Ideally you should start visiting salons anywhere from nine months to a year before your wedding to allow enough time. If you’re in a rush, 6 months or less, tell your consultant immediately. SHAPES & SIZES Remember that no two brides are shaped alike, therefore, no dress will ever accent your silhouette exactly the same way it does another bride’s body. When the time comes to try on gowns, explore a myriad of styles and cuts to figure out what works for you. Keep an open mind; you might be

surprised! Note that bridal salons often carry only one sample size of each gown. Try on these gowns even if they’re not your size. Consultants are there to help you get in and out of sample sizes. If you’re nervous about the sizes available at your local bridal salon, give them a call. Talking to a representative will ease your mind, and you’ll find that whether you’re full-figured or very petite, there have never been more options to accommodate brides of all shapes and sizes. TRYING ON DRESSES Don’t be afraid to try on dresses that aren’t necessarily in your comfort zone. You never know what a gown will really look like until you try it on, and lots of brides end up choosing a style of gown they never even dreamed of. Remember that the gowns at salons are just samples, so the size won’t be tailored to you, and most dresses can be ordered in various shades of white. So just because you’re not crazy about that big blush dress on the hanger, try it anyway! What do you have to lose?

3520-4 Blanding Blvd. | 904.779.9000 | frenchnovelty.com

WORKING WITH A CONSULTANT While at the salon, make sure to take advantage of your professional consultant’s knowledge and expertise. A good bridal consultant should steer you in the right direction so communicate your likes, dislikes, wants, and needs as much as possible. It’s the consultant’s job to handle every step of your salon experience including showing you every option within your price range. They can also coordinate alterations and other practical matters once you’ve found “the one.” If you’re not in sync with the consultant you’ve been dealt, don’t hesitate to ask to work with a different representative. Every bridal salon’s goal is to give you an enjoyable experience.

ALTERATIONS & FITTINGS Deciding on a gown is a major hurdle, but that’s not the end of the wedding dress “to do” list. There are usually as many as four fittings that follow saying “yes” to the dress. Here are some tips for making this process run as smoothly as possible. First, give yourself and the seamstress sufficient time. If you’re in a rush, this is when working with a bridal salon can really help. It’s usually their job to make sure alterations run smoothly and on time. Second, choose a dress that’s very close to your actual size. Most gowns can’t be changed by more than two sizes, up or down. Buy a dress that fits the biggest part of you, not the smallest part. It’s easier to take a dress in to hug your figure PremierBrideFlorida.com

than it is to let it out. If you’re not working with a salon and have to find your own seamstress, choose one that has a great reputation, not the lowest rate. When the time comes for your first fitting, make sure you’re sporting the same undergarments and shoes that you’ll be wearing on your wedding day. Even the slightest tweak in bra padding or heel height can change the way a dress hangs and where the hem falls. As you’re working with the seamstress, trust that they know what they’re doing. You may ask them to make one alteration, and they might suggest an alternate way to achieve that look, or advise against it altogether. Know when to take a deep breath and have some faith in the professionals. WINTER/SPRING 2022 • PREMIER BRIDE • 103

WEDDING DAY STYLE quirky, elegant and unforgettable So you’ve found the dress, but you really want your bridal look to scream YOU!? Consider adding one or all of the following suggestions into your bridal look on your wedding day. Personalize it: Have a piece of the gown embroidered with a custom monogram with your new initials and wedding day on it. Make the embroidery blue, so that you have the “something blue” covered. You can also add an image, instead of a monogram, like a heart or other picture that is special to you. Have a patch or other insignia added to the inside of your gown, this will be something that you will see, but it adds that extra touch of you. Wearing a veil? Consider having the bottom of the veil embroidered with white or ivory thread, it is simply unforgettable. 104 • PREMIER BRIDE • WINTER/SPRING 2022

Have a Surprise: You might want to think about adding a fun layer of fabric under your gown. Have the fabric sewn on the inside of the gown, and get ready for a photo op! If your gown isn’t full enough, you might consider having a crinoline dyed to your favorite color. Your Shoes: Gone are the days of plain ivory heels, and enter a whole new world of shoes for your wedding day! From cowboy boots to bridal sandals, brides are finding shoes that appeal to them, and express their personality. Not Just White: You might be in love with the color pink, why don’t you wear a pink wedding gown? Color is very in style right now, and you might consider wearing a dress in your favorite color. RINGS

amazing ITS

the power of a piece of jewelry to convey so much meaning… Engagement rings and wedding bands represent the never-ending love you have for each other, and let the whole world know you are married! Besides the exquisite beauty of wedding rings, there is a lot to know about metals, diamonds, and the care involved.

RINGS

THE CIRCLE OF LOVE understanding the basics RING TRENDS Reflection of your personal flair is what it’s about. Whether you adore traditional or lean toward trendy, you won’t be at a loss of eye candy to choose from. Newer Trends include the vintage inspired halo ring (a setting that encircles a center gemstone in a collection of smaller stones) to fashion-forward two-stone rings (two central gemstones either the same or mixed). Colorful diamonds or gemstones like sapphires, emeralds, and rubies are very popular. Choose a shade and setting that speaks to your personal style because the choices are endless. We’re seeing bold standalone bands as well as matching bands. Diamondencrusted, luxe signet rings and sparkly eternity or infinity bands (with its endless circle of stones) that symbolizes neverending love. If you can’t decide between an elaborate band or engagement ring with a center stone, we love the idea of both, wearing your engagement ring and wedding band for different occasions. Consider including meaningful details, like a favorite quote or your wedding date engraved into the band. KNOW YOUR METALS 14-karat yellow gold is classic, popular, durable enough for daily wear, and can be polished easily. Rose gold is gaining popularity. White gold is made by mixing pure gold with other white metals such as nickel, palladium, or zinc, and can be a less-expensive alternative to platinum. Extremely popular in the last decade or so, platinum is a very white, heavy, and durable metal, ideal for engraving. A sister metal to platinum, palladium is a naturally white metal (whiter than white PremierBrideFlorida.com

gold), and like platinum, it is strong, nontarnishing, and hypoallergenic. It’s also less expensive than platinum, making it a good metal to consider if you like the white metal look. Titanium and tungsten carbide have become popular for men’s wedding bands, and both metals are 100% hypoallergenic and relatively inexpensive. Titanium can be oxidized to create some brilliant accent colors, creating a unique look. Tungsten carbide is twice as hard as steel and almost impossible to scratch, making it a great metal for active men. These metals cannot be resized once the ring is made, so order the size carefully. KNOW YOUR DIAMOND You will quickly be introduced to the “Four Cs” - cut, color, clarity, and carat. All four make a dramatic impact on quality and price of a diamond. Cut. Cut really refers to the proportions of a diamond and its facets, as opposed to its shape, which includes round (brilliant), oval, pear, marquise, emerald, square (princess or radiant), heart, and triangle. Regardless of shape, a diamond gets its brilliancy from the cutting and maximizing the reflection of light. Color. Color refers to the lack of color in a diamond. White diamonds are graded on a D–Z scale, D being the most colorless and Z having a distinct body color. Clarity. Clarity is defined by the number, color, nature, size, and position of natural marks (called inclusions) contained in the gem. Inclusions occur naturally during the process of crystallization, when minute traces of minerals are trapped in the diamond. Excellent clarity means light can pass unimpeded through the stone, WINTER/SPRING 2022 • PREMIER BRIDE • 131

Know Your Metals 14-KARAT YELLOW GOLD CLASSIC Durable for daily wear, polishes easily. WHITE GOLD Made by mixing pure gold with white metals; can be a less-expensive; alternative to platinum. PLATINUM Very white; heavy, durable metal; ideal for engraving. PALLADIUM Sister metal to platinum; naturally white metal; strong, non-tarnishing and hypo-allergenic.

Know Your Diamond Diamonds are measured by the “Four Cs.” A L L F O U R F E AT U R E S C A N M A K E A D R A M AT I C I M PA C T ON T H E Q U A L I T Y , & T H E R E F O R E P R I C E , O F A D I A M ON D .

CUT Proportions of a diamond and its facets, as opposed to its shape. A diamond gets its brilliancy from the cutting which maximizes the reflection of light. COLOR White diamonds are graded on a D–Z scale, D being the most colorless. CLARITY The presence of natural marks, called inclusions, in the gem. The Gemological Institute of America judges clarity based on a standard 11-point scale from “Flawless” through “Imperfect 3.” CARATS Diamonds are weighed in carats, which may also be expressed as “points,” where one carat equals 100 points.

THE WEDDING RING GOES ON THE LEFT RING FINGER BECAUSE IT’S THE ONLY FINGER WITH A VEIN THAT CONNECTS DIRECTLY TO THE HEART. 132 • PREMIER BRIDE • WINTER/SPRING 2022

increasing its value. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) judges’ clarity based on a standard 11-point scale from “Flawless” through “Imperfect 3” (see clarity scale below). Carat. Diamonds are weighed in carats, which may also be expressed as “points,” where one carat equals 100 points. A diamond of 50 points, for example, equals .5 carat. Diamonds of more than one carat are extremely rare (one in a thousand), and therefore very valuable. But remember that carat weight is only one factor in determining value. Two diamonds of the same size can vary considerably in value depending on the other three factors – cut, color, and clarity. APPRAISE IT Request a written estimate of the value of your jewelry, which should include specific indications of the four Cs. Immediately after purchase, photograph your jewelry for insurance purposes, and make sure your current policy has adequate coverage, including “mysterious disappearance.” TAKE GOOD CARE Although diamonds are the hardest natural substance known to man, a hard blow could still chip one, so don’t wear your ring when doing rough work. You should also avoid direct contact with chlorine bleach and chlorinated pool water, which could pit and discolor the mounting. Have your rings checked annually by your jeweler for loose prongs or settings. Just one broken prong could cause you to lose your stone. These precautions and gentle care will pay you back with years of enjoyment and pride in this precious symbol of your union. PremierBrideFlorida.com

GROOMS

THE WELL-SUITED GROOM

GROOMS

everything you need to know THE LEVEL OF FORMALITY The first order of business is to evaluate how formal your wedding will be. This depends on the time and location of the wedding, along with the level of formality the two of you settle on. Just make sure whatever level of formality you settle on, make sure you’re consistent throughout — invitations, décor, food, location, and wedding attire should all match in terms of formality. In warm weather and for beachy destination weddings, lighter colors (tan, light grey, white) look effortlessly handsome. Though in all climates, darker colors (navy, charcoal, black) always look sharp. Ties, and vests can match or compliment (neutral tones) the wedding colors. If the wedding gown is ivory, don’t wear a white shirt. Wear ivory to compliment the dress. Combining two suite accessories into one is the pocket boutonniere. This chic and modern cluster of florals adds a unique element to your wedding day look with the bonus of no pins. DISTINGUISHING THE GROOM It’s nice to have some way of setting the groom apart. One way to distinguish the groom is to give him a different, but complimentary, boutonniere to wear. Another idea is for the groom to wear a white jacket while his groomsmen are in black. Or the groom could wear a white, ivory, or silver vest and/or tie while his groomsmen wear vests scan and/or ties in black, or a color PremierBrideFlorida.com

THE WELL-SUITED GROOM

that matches the bridesmaids’ dresses. Semiformal weddings have plenty of options: a high quality, single- or doublebreasted suit in black, charcoal, or navy with a Windsor knotted tie in ivory, navy, silver, or black is a less formal option. For a more formal look, consider a tuxedo with a single- or double-breasted jacket, a white or ivory pointed-collar shirt, a vest and either a bow tie or a four-in-hand tie. A very formal wedding, called “white tie,” calls for the traditional black tuxedo with tails, a vest, a white winged-collar shirt, and a bow tie. SHOPPING TIPS When visiting the formalwear shop, have a firm idea of the women’s wedding attire and bring fabric or color swatches from the bridesmaids’ gowns. Pictures of preferred formalwear styles would also be helpful in the decision-making process. Reserve rentals at least three months in advance of the wedding (although the earlier, the better, especially during the busy season). Final measurements should be taken about three weeks before the ceremony; however, be sure to come back a few days before the wedding for last-minute alterations. Out-of-town groomsmen can get measured at any formalwear store or local tailors near them and send their measurements to the groom or to your formalwear store. Someone should be designated to return all formalwear to the store on time to avoid late fees, which can get quite expensive adding up the per day, per outfit costs. THE PERFECT FIT There are a few key points to keep in mind regarding fit when ordering formalwear. Shirts should fit well around the neck. The bottom hem of the pants should just touch the top of the shoes. Jackets should be fitted, with some room at the 134 • PREMIER BRIDE • WINTER/SPRING 2022

waist. Sleeves should end at the wrist bone with the same number of shirt buttons showing. Vents on the side of the jacket should lie smoothly and follow the lines of the body. The collar should hug the neck comfortably, and the lapels shouldn’t buckle. GROOMING THE GROOM An important detail that is sometimes overlooked is the groom’s hair. Men are generally more casual about haircuts than women, but they should ideally get their hair trimmed two weeks before the wedding to add the finishing touch to their wedding finery. Pass this helpful tip on to the groomsmen as well! If you plan to take photos of the bride’s hand and the groom’s hand with the new rings, it would be a great idea for the groom to get a manicure just before the wedding. CURRENT TRENDS IN FORMALWEAR Black is classic. But navy blue, grey, or tan suits are handsome and on-trend. Vests & ties. Vests and dressy standard neckties (called four-in-hand ties or Windsor knotted ties) are popular, but bow ties are also making a comeback. Both are available in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Lapels & pleats. Notched lapels on coats are the most common, though peak lapels and shawl collars are increasing in popularity. Current fashion trends opt for flat fronts on pants and smooth fronts on shirts — no pleats. Be stylish, have fun. Groomsmen accessories that complement the groom instead of matching the bridesmaids’ dresses are another alternative. Adding colored socks or suspenders is a fun way to tie in the wedding colors and show some personality. PremierBrideFlorida.com

YOU CAN STILL BE EXCITED about planning your honeymoon or destination wedding Weddings have resumed and many couples are ready to enjoy the honeymoon they envisioned. Some concerns loom and should be taken into consideration. We strongly recommend using a travel agent for their expertise and experience to help navigate any restrictions or special issues you need to be aware of. Requirements can be fluid and change depending on COVID rates. Most countries are requiring proof of vaccination and/or a negative COVID PCR test within a certain time prior to travel. Please note that compliancy is the client’s responsibility regarding testing and filling out forms per destination prior to arrival. The cost of using a travel agent is generally zero and an experienced agent will save time and greatly reduce your stress. If anything goes wrong (cancelled flight, lost reservation, etc.), your travel agent is just a phone call away. What should couples consider when planning and booking their honeymoon? If you do plan to travel internationally and don’t have an up-to-date passport we highly recommend doing so as soon as possible. With more countries opening for travel and cruise lines sailing again, the demand for passports will be high and there could be delays. If the country you really want to visit is not open, consider planning something smaller and keep planning the trip you have always wanted for a later date. As for countries that you should avoid, we suggest visiting the U.S. Dept. of State’s website (travel.state.gov) for current travel conditions along with updates and 136 • PREMIER BRIDE • WINTER/SPRING 2022

travel advisories on the horizon. Hotels and Resorts in tourist areas have really stepped up their cleaning and sanitizing to help assure safety of guests. You’ll see table spacing in restaurants and staff wearing masks throughout resorts. Go tropical. For the most active of couples, your honeymoon is one time when it’s okay to sit back and be pampered. If you choose a tropical destination, an all-inclusive resort is a most relaxing way to go, and most places offer a honeymoon package. All abroad! If you’ve never been abroad before, make sure this is an experience you’re both fully committed to. Planning an international trip for the first time can be stressful. But if you’re up to the challenge, the result can be a most romantic, unforgettable experience. Staying local. If you don’t have the funds for a plane ticket abroad or can’t get away for a long trip, consider what’s close to home. You’ll probably be surprised to learn that there’s a quaint bed & breakfast just a few miles away. Turn off your cell phones and focus on each other. It will seem as if you’re lightyears away. Take a cruise. If you can’t decide on a destination, a cruise might be for you. If you want to see Europe, try a Mediterranean cruise. If you know you want to go tropical but can’t decide on a spot, island hop on a Caribbean cruise. And if you can’t decide whether you want to relax or be active, a cruise will give the chance to do both. PremierBrideFlorida.com

ARUBA

Aruba is literally a desert island in the Caribbean, meaning much of its landscape resembles the Southwest, right down to the cacti. The coastline, on the other hand, makes way for sprawling, palm-lined beaches and aqua-blue water. For lovers of nature and diverse landscapes, there’s much to love about Aruba. GETTING THERE Aruba is easy to get to from the U.S. All you need to have handy is your passport — and, on the heels of Covid, any health documentation required at the time of your trip. When you pack, plan for beach vibes and casual fun in the sun. Formalwear really isn’t needed when you’re on island time. Whatever you do, don’t forget your sunscreen!

many people are looking to escape the cold. Over these months, hotel rooms go quickly and prices are higher, so be sure to book well in advance. Low season starts in mid-April and lasts until December. WHERE TO STAY Aruba is host to a ton of fun options for lodgings. As you might imagine, there are ample resorts and all-inclusive options. There are also timeshares, apartments for rent, and boutique hotels ranging from the adorable to the height of luxury. Whatever vibe you’re hoping for, you’ll find it here.

WEATHER FORECAST When it comes to weather, Aruba truly enjoys near-perfect weather in all seasons. The island is located outside of the Hurricane Belt, keeping it far away from any storms. Most rainfall happens between October and January in Aruba — but even on days with some rain, there’s also ample sunshine.

ARUBA ON THE BEACH After the stress of wedding planning, maybe all you want to do is lay in the sun, soak up some rays, and cool off in that stunning sea. If you stay along one of the pristine beaches, your itinerary may take you from beach to pool to cocktails and back again. If you’re looking for a resort with a luxurious spa experience, you’ll find it in Aruba. Consider Palm Beach, consistently rated one of the best beaches in the world.

WHEN TO VISIT ARUBA If traveling during the high season of midDecember through mid-April, know that the island tends to be more crowded since

ARUBA ON THE WATER From champagne brunch cruises to happy hour sunset sails to moonlit dinner and dancing excursions, there’s

no shortage of nautical experiences to be had by boat. The water is so clear around the island, you can enjoy great views of coral formations, marine life, and even shipwrecks without ever making a splash. You can find everything from a snorkeling or scuba diving cruise to a swim-with-thedolphins adventure to deep-sea fishing. Skim the sea with wind and kite surfing — a popular activity because of Aruba’s steady stream of trade winds and calm pockets of water, making it perfect for beginners. ADVENTUROUS ARUBA BY LAND On dry land, animal lovers can horseback ride either through the exciting desert terrain or along an easy-breezy stretch of coastline. Horses not your thing? Rent bikes or mountain bikes to give yourselves a tour of the island. About 20% of Aruba is made up of Arikok National Park, filled with endless trails, caves, natural pools, flora, wildlife and more. Feeling sporty? Golfers can swing away at one of Aruba’s three golf courses. PremierBrideFlorida.com

SIGHTS TO SEE & THINGS TO DO Some tourist favorites include the scenic California Lighthouse, first constructed in 1910, with its 360-degree views of the island. The Alto Vista Chapel, known as “Pilgrims Church” stands in the hills with a breathtaking view of the Caribbean below. Built in 1750 and reconstructed in 1953, this chapel is a sacred place of peace for the locals. If you’re an art lover, the Aruba Art Fair in San Nicolas is not to be missed. This is a yearly festival where both international and local artists create incredible street art. To accompany the visual art, the threeday festival also includes music, dancing, and other live entertainment. Looking for a little nightlife? There’s a tour for that. In addition to ATV tours, hiking tours, historic walking tours, and food tours, Aruba boasts bar-hopping tours as well. Sounds like a great way to really let loose and celebrate for an evening. And the great thing? After the last island cocktail, the beach will still be there to welcome you back for some romantic R&R. WINTER/SPRING 2022 • PREMIER BRIDE • 139
