The last six months have been a busy period for Community Housing Ltd (CHL) with various projects under development across the country. It was an exciting time particularly because we launched our National Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and hosted a series of events across our various state offices. It is an important step forward for CHL as it reinforces our commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.

In the last 15 years of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People, we have forged deep relationships with our Indigenous partners and communities around the country on the strong foundation of mutual trust and respect. Today 14.4% of our Australian housing portfolio houses Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tenants – and we are proud of that.

We are embarking on a Reflect RAP to be implemented over the coming 12 months. This provides the foundation for CHL to further build trust and strengthen existing and new relationships, both internally and externally; deepen our understanding and respect for our First Peoples’ rich history, cultures and achievements; and promote sustainable opportunities for employment and training to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the provision of housing.

CHL Launches Reconciliation Action Plan We celebrated National Reconciliation Week 2019 by launching our REFLECT Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) – endorsed by Reconciliation Australia.

Our RAP is a strategic document that provides a framework for us to support national reconciliation and to achieve our vision for a just, equitable and productive organisation.

It is a practical plan of action and outlines how CHL undertake a reflection of its existing practice and service delivery over the next 12 months and its active contribution to the journey of reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across the nation.

We are also pleased to share that CHL is in the process of registering an Aboriginal housing organisation, Aboriginal Community Housing Limited (ACHL) that will provide culturally appropriate housing to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. Supported by CHL in its early years, ACHL is set to become the first independent national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander led and managed provider of long-term affordable housing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

In various locations across the country CHL staff, local community and guests gathered to celebrate the launch of RAP with traditional performances, Welcome to Country, and the sharing of stories and good grub.

We are thrilled to formalise what has been a more than 15 year commitment to supporting the provision of long-term affordable housing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the sustainable development of their communities.

Dash With a Splash & a Twist 2019 Dash with a Splash & a Twist was held in Kempsey in April and, as always, was a very colourful event.

Approximately 1000 participants laughed their way around the track, through colour stations and negotiating obstacles, which provided the twist this year for all levels of mobility. Kempsey Healing Together Committee, community sponsors and supporters held the exciting event which was hosted by Burrun Dalai Aboriginal Corporation. This year saw CHL become a silver sponsor. Booroongen Djugun Ltd was this year’s major sponsor.

The Deadly Ninja spurred participants along; the Deadly Black Warrior ‘menaced’ the crowds; skydivers landed from the heavens; and the last dance off ensured everyone was colour soaked.

Tenants get Involved in the Housing 4 Health Project CHL has partnered with NSW Health to deliver the Housing for Health project to 129 CHL properties in the Kempsey area. The project focuses on improving the safety and health in home. So far, eleven CHL tenants have been employed on a casual basis to be part of the survey teams. It’s fantastic to hear that this work has led to some long-term employment opportunities. We’ve caught up with two of our wonderful employees below:

How did you get to be involved in the H4H project?

How did you get to be involved in the H4H project?

By word of mouth through my tenancy worker Kirsten and I was immediately interested, as I like anything to do with community.

What did you like best about being involved in the H4H project?

Meeting new people and making new friends. I like new experiences.

One of the girls from CHL approached me and asked if I’d like to be involved in the project.

What did you like best about being involved in the H4H project?

I enjoyed getting some work and being out in the community meeting people.

How did this project lead to what you are doing now?

H4H introduced me to Shane Moore & then he referred me to Gai Southwell, which led to some paid part time work at the south Kempsey neighbourhood centre.

After the H4H project, Rob Barnett offered me more work on another project called Clean Country.

Then I applied for Aged Care work and was able to use the people organizing these projects as my referees. Since then I’ve been told I have gained casual work in the Aged Care industry, however I have not begun yet.

Tell us about what you are doing now?

Tell us about what you are doing now?

I’m still helping youth out of the love and kindness of my heart in my home, or wherever I find an opportunity.

I’m now anxiously waiting for the call to start work!

What advice would you give to others contemplating this type of short term work?

It was great, so I’d tell people to accept the opportunity. Not only do you have a chance to get out and about to meet people in the community, you get paid plus you feel good getting involved in doing something worthwhile.

How did this project lead to what you are doing now?

Just be very open and respectful to people and don’t judge them.

“I absolutely love working with community. I love the fact of helping others as my grandparents are known for it also. I’ve joined the COGS (Community Organized Group Service) to benefit our beautiful community and try to make a better future for our youth.”

What advice would you give to others contemplating this type of short term work?

UPDATE: Caroline has now received the good news that she could start her casual work in May and that there should be lots of shifts! She is very happy about this.

International Elders Visit Jubullum Late last year the Jubullum community, in northern NSW, came together with a group of visiting international elders, ambassadors and musiciansall of who made the special journey to the small community to pay tribute to Poppy Harry Mundine Walker and the Wahlubul people. CHL team members Rebekah Elsley and Leon Anderson were honoured to be invited by the community and described the event as “amazing”.

Tenant Story – Jack Bamford, Bush Poet Jack has been a tenant with Community Housing (VIC) Ltd (CHVL) for many years and has overcome many struggles in his life. By engaging with local support he is now managing extremely well and is exploring his love of music and poetry. Jack has been successful in getting a book of his bush poetry published and, following on from the success of this, founded a band called Redgum and Lost Souls. They describe their music as original poems and songs representing the essence of Australia.

The band were invited to perform at the Blades of Glencoe, an event held at the historic Glencoe Woolshed in South Australia, to support Beyond Blue and raise awareness about mental health and suicide

Red Gum Soul The hot Australian bush and the people that live within, many a hardship they face together just like “Red Gum and the Lost Souls”.

The lucky country and our Red Gum, stand high and strong upon the Murray River.

The summer sun and leaves standing so still in the heat, the lost one wonders and sits at the base. The same as he has done for many a year, gathering his thoughts and the Red Gum’s wisdom of 100 years or so.

In times of war when the world screams for the digger to come running, as his lady sleeps alone, fearless as the bayonet sinks deep into his enemy’s heart.

No fear they say, but in his mind he thinks of old man Red Gum standing high upon the banks, and the secret times of war to him and the land we love Australia.

A poem by Jack Bamford prevention. Jack and Redgum and Lost Souls are very passionate about the cause and wrote a song specifically for the event. They played for a total of 6 hours, helping to raise over $25,000 for Beyond Blue.

To raise money for the trip Jack and his bandmates performed many fundraising activities in their community. CHVL donated $200 to help them get there and support mental health awareneness.

Meet Jamie Hutchinson, CHVL’s New Community Development Officer Hi! It’s great to be part of the CHVL team! I’m super excited about this role.

I’ve spent the last 13 years working in the community housing sector and I’m incredibly passionate about community development.

When I’m not at work you could find me anywhere in the world. Literally I’m addicted to travel. I’m also a sports nut - AFL, soccer, you name it.

I’ll be based out of the Box Hill office, but will be making my way around the state. I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can and learning more about you and your communities. See you soon!

Queens Road Residents Get Connected Residents at the Queens Road Rooming House are enjoying and utilising the recently installed WiFi. “The residents are just thrilled and have excitedly embraced the WiFi connection, wholeheartedly, there is a real buzz around. It has opened up a whole new world for our residents, one they have been largely disconnected from for too long, so it’s a tremendously exciting development,” says Queens Road Manager Michael Psalios.

The Queens Road Rooming House was established over 13 years ago and is operated by the Rooming House Plus Program (RHPP) - a partnership between CHL and support services provider Sacred Heart Mission Ltd. The Queens Road program provides accommodation and 24/7 support services for people with histories of chronic homelessness.

An Inspirational CHVL Team Member Wins 2019 AHI Award CHVL’s Sherrill Southon has won the AHI Victoria ‘Inspirational Team Member’ 2019 Award.

Sherrill received the well-deserved award for her significant role in CHVL’s increased provision of housing for Aboriginal people, people escaping domestic violence, those with disabilities and aged-care accommodation needs. CHL Common Grounds Work – A Community Development Approach Building a better Community Space – What do our tenants want and need?

Our Assets Maintenance team is charged with bringing all the common ground spaces into compliance with CHL guidelines. This includes things like paths, access, safety, planting and mulching.

Before and after of garden at Oakden units incorporated their suggestions and schedule of works. Once the works were completed a luncheon was held to celebrate.

Feedback from tenants has been overwhelmingly positive and we have started the same approach on a group of cottages in Enfield.

We have been taking this opportunity to work closely with our tenants and consult them on their ideas and insight to what they would like their common grounds areas to be.

Our first group was a set of units in Oakden.

We invited all tenants to a meeting to share our plan for the area, asked for feedback and ideas then reported back to tenants with the final plan which 10

CHL in SA is very pleased to welcome our new partner OATES who is providing us with product for our new ‘Happy Home’ starter kit.

Oates have provided us with an assortment of 12 household items – cloths/sponges/ brushes/mop/broom/bucket/dust pan etc.

The ‘Happy Home’ kit, will be given to new tenants when they receive their keys to their new home. With this partnership we are working to assist our tenants to have pride in their homes and help create good spaces to be in.

OATES goodies at the CHL Prospect office

SA Tenant Advisory Group CHL values and seeks input from our tenants to help us provide the best service we can, we invited all interested tenants to nominate for the Tenant Advisory Group (TAG).

We now have an active team of 8 tenants from across our houses, who meet bi-monthly to; • Provide advice on processes and communications relating to tenants.

• Give insight into what’s working and what’s not working with tenancy and property management.

• Advise on tenant needs e.g. amenities and services.

• Advise on community needs, wants, updates, initiatives, and aspirations.

• Help develop Health and Wellbeing ideas and initiatives.

Guda Guda Community Building Together Community members at Guda Guda in Wyndham, East Kimberley, WA, have come together to successfully complete another project.

Nine Mile Aboriginal Corporation, who represent the needs of people at Guda Guda, identified the need for recreational activities in community, and worked with us to secure funds to build a playground and half basketball court.

Funding for the project was supplied by the WA State Government |Sport and Recreation, Lottery West, FRRR, and Commonwealth funding from PM&C. 12

The new basketball half-court The basketball court enables young people to engage in healthy activities with each other and their families as well as providing a space for evening discos and community events.

The playground will be used by Wella, a Commonwealth early childhood program.

It also provides an opportunity for children to improve their gross

motor skills, develop social skills, and provides a space for free play which is essential to child development.

CHL and Nine Mile Aboriginal Corporation are committed to creating a safe community where children and young people can play and engage in positive activities alongside family.

CHL PERTH OFFICE GETS NEW SIGNAGE

Signage at the Perth office has recently been updated making the office much easier to locate for visitors.

Located on busy Fitzgerald Street in Perth, many tenants and clients had told us that they could never locate our office as it wasn’t well signed. Now we are hard to miss!

Fitzgerald Street Complex Sparkles Tenants of the Fitzgerald Street apartment complex in Perth have seen a lot of activity recently with a cleaning team giving the complex common areas a clean.

The building is now 5 years old so a major clean like this was well overdue.

“Kylie Ingram, our Senior Housing Officer has done an amazing job driving this project and it has resulted in the complex being a much nicer place for our tenants to live” said CHL WA State Manager, James Butterworth.

“So many tenants have thanked us for the work that has been done” said Kylie. “I love doing this work and it is so rewarding when we can get something like this done for our tenants. We have such a lovely

There is now a planned cleaning schedule for the complex to ensure that the building continues to be maintained to a standard.

Home Sweet Home for Lizzie

New Faces in Kununurra

Last winter Lizzie couch surfed or tried to stay dry sleeping in a park.

We have a few new faces in the Housing Team at our Kununurra office. Welcome to Jenna, Sam, Jacqui Jacqui and Kailum who join us as Housing and Property Services Officers and to our new Customer Service Officer Joanne.

Thanks to the 50 Lives 50 Homes Program and CHL, Lizzie will be warm and dry in her own home this winter and hopefully for many more winters to come. This lovely lady will be spending winter in her own home for the first time in many years.

“Lizzie has really made this unit her home” said Judy Malaspina, Lizzie’s Housing Officer. “She has already established a garden and now has her gorgeous grandchildren to come and visit. I love coming to visit Lizzie and seeing her so happy”.

Welcome to the CHL family Lizzie. We hope you are very happy in your new home.

Jenna, Jacqui and Kailum will be busy visiting our remote communities in the East Kimberley and Sam is based in Kalamburu.

TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PROGRAM The Transitional Housing Program in Kununurra has had some special new additions in the last few months. Brand new properties have been built for this program with the first few tenants moving in over April 2019. Co-designed with community input these beautiful new homes are well designed for the challenging Kimberley climate.

Beautiful colour in Desley and Tony’s garden

Desley and Tony’s Garden Oasis Desley and her husband Tony have been tenant’s with CHL since 2013. Since commencing their tenancy in Tinana, Desley has continually added to her garden ensuring it remains fresh and vibrant all year round.

Their beautiful garden has been the focal point of the Gympie road complex for many years and has only improved and become more extravagant over time. It’s the first thing that you notice when you visit - with all the colours that are on display you really don’t know where to look first.

The couple are very house proud and share a love for the outdoors and gardening. Desley and Tony haven’t stopped at their own garden either they generously share their time and knowledge with other tenants often planting new plants in the common areas and in their neighbours gardens.

Although Desley constantly struggles with physically debilitating health issues, she makes a point of saying “It’s all in the mind” and has never let her health issues get between her and the garden.

We would like to acknowledge Desley and Tony’s fantastic contribution to the complex and thank them for their efforts in beautifying the place they call home.

Tenant Story Angeline experienced homelessness for many years, spending time in refuges and couch surfing. The CHL QLD tenancy team, along with The Family Accommodation team, were able to assist Angeline through CHL’s accommodation and support programs.

Throughout the duration of her 12-month tenancy, Angeline was supported in gaining appropriate skills to be able to manage a tenancy along and build a rental reference history.

In 2018, Angeline was successful in securing private rental accommodation. We are so proud of Angeline!! During her time with CHL, her confidence and independence flourished and she is proud to share her story in the hope that she may be able to inspire others in similar situations and provide hope.

New Report Examines the Housing Needs of Older Australians The housing needs of older people living in rural areas are often not well understood with limited research and data available nationally. To better understand the specific needs of those living and ageing in small communities, a new report from leading community housing provider Horizon Housing – part of the CHL Group of Companies, was released earlier this year and is shining a light on lack of provision of appropriate housing in rural areas.

The My Home, My Place Report, funded by the Queensland Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors, is the first of its kind to examine the housing needs of older people living in key rural communities.

The study was initiated in Roma, 480km west of Brisbane where 19% of residents are over 65.

The report is designed to better understand the housing needs of older people in rural areas.

In June 2019, a summary of this report and the findings were delivered to local service providers in Roma during an event focused on Ageing and hosted by the Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors.

Rise and Thrive on the Fraser Coast On Friday 7th June Hervey Bay hosted the first Rise and Thrive Festival.

The free event was organised by Department of Housing and Public Works held at The Community Centre in Hervey Bay. The festival was set up to provide an opportunity

There were ample free activities and food for all who attended. Guest speakers who attended

CHL’s Karen Goodfellow and Debbie Marxon with Samuel Johnson at Rise and Thrive Festival included Samuel Johnson from Love Your Sister and Dan and Steph from My Kitchen Rules. A great

day was had by all and we hope that it becomes an annual event.

MAKING A FORMAL COMPLAINT

We take your feedback seriously. Here are some examples of what you can provide feedback about:

You do not need to make your complaint in writing, if you are speaking to a CHL employee and inform them that it is a formal complaint they will treat it the same as if it were in writing.

ADVISING US OF A CONCERN Many issues can be sorted out quickly and easily by speaking to the employee who is dealing with the matter. We would encourage you to use this approach first however if this does not resolve the matter you can always make a formal complaint.

Easy Ways to Pay Your Rent 1. Centrepay

2. Direct Debit

The BEST and EASIEST way to pay your rent and water bill. Using your Tenancy ID number you can use Centrepay to arrange regular deductions from your Centrelink payments. It’s a free service and it’s easy to use – we can help you set up weekly or fortnightly deductions at NO COST to you.

CHL can organise this for you.

With Centrepay, you also have the option of allocating a small amount each week or fortnight to cover your water account. So when your water bill is invoiced it will already have been paid.

If you would like to organise Centrepay payments please contact your CHL Tenancy worker.

You can have your rent and/or water bill amount paid automatically from your bank account. You can cancel it at any time if you don’t want to use it.

7 Quick Tips for Staying Healthy Over Winter Whether you’re seeking winter sun in the north, or (trying to!) stay warm in the south; it’s important to keep up your healthy eating habits and get your 30 minutes of physical activity a day.

So, keep your heart healthy with these 7 healthy tips for winter.

1. Enjoy winter seasonal vegetables and fruit

Grapefruit, kiwifruit, mandarins and oranges are all delicious and in season over winter. Try involving fruit in your breakfast if you’re not already and add an extra serve of vegetables to each main meal. Broccoli, carrots and cauliflower are great winter vegetables, particularly for soups and stir fries. While fresh is best, don’t be afraid to stock the freezer up with cheap and easy additions to any meal.

A great winter warmer! Make your casseroles and stews with lots of vegetables to boost your meals with heart healthy foods. When cooking stews and casseroles remember to trim fat off meat before cooking.

Making extra means lunch is sorted too. For winter desserts, stew some fruit and save some for breakfast for the next day.

2. Take time for tea Drinking tea dates back to ancient China, and in recent years the spotlight has been on its health benefits. Black and green tea are rich in plant chemicals, which have antioxidant effects. In studies of people who drink tea regularly, their blood vessels were healthier and their risk of heart disease lower.

4. Perfect your portions Winter is a great time to re-think the size of your meal, especially with foods such as rice, pasta and potatoes which, while delicious, can be easy to over-serve. Choosing a healthy amount for you can help to manage your weight, and free up space on your plate for more vegetables! Try using smaller plates when dishing up and waiting 20 minutes before heading back for seconds.

5. Get active indoors Join a team or a physical activity program. There’s lots of indoor activities to embrace over winter, such as yoga, bowling, dancing, soccer and so on. The key is making your winter activity enjoyable and social. Try out your local indoor swimming pool; if you’re not a great swimmer try some simple aerobic moves in the shallow end.

6. Sit less Get active around the house. Don’t want to miss your favourite show?

Try jogging or skipping on the spot or even just stretching while you watch.

Try getting active gardening, cleaning, washing the dog or dancing. Have fun getting physical in the comfort of your warm home.

7. Rug up Keep an eye on the weather and if it’s not raining, get out outside and go for it. Once you get moving you’ll warm up. When you’re out and about look for incidental ways to exercise walk or cycle to the local shops instead of driving the car. Use the stairs instead of the lift or escalator.

Join a walking group and get active with friends to keep you motivated.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Classic one-pot beef stew Serves 6 ingredients

METHOD

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

Step 1

• 1kg beef chuck steak, cut into 4cm chunks

Heat half the olive oil in a large saucepan and cook beef over high heat in 3 batches until well browned.

Transfer to a plate. Reduce heat to medium and add remaining oil and onion. Cook for 5 mins, until soft.

Add tomato paste and paprika and sprinkle flour over. Cook, stirring, for 1 min. Gradually add stock, stirring constantly.

• 1 brown onion, chopped • 3 tablespoons tomato paste • 2 teaspoons sweet paprika • 1 tablespoon plain flour • 1 1/2 cups beef stock • 150g button mushrooms, quartered • 2 carrots, peeled and thickly sliced • 1kg Sebago potatoes, peeled, cut into 4cm chunks • 200g green beans, trimmed, cut to 4cm • 1/2 cup lite sour cream, to serve (optional)

Step 2 Return meat to the pan, cover and bring just to the boil. Reduce heat to very low and cook gently, covered, for 1 hour. Add mushrooms, carrot and potato. Replace lid and cook for 45 mins then add beans and cook a further 15 mins.

Step 3 Serve topped with a dollop of lite sour cream (optional).
