ABOUT ME PREETHI CHITHARANJAN Architect A graduate student currently pursuing Master’s degree in Architecture (M.Arch) at Savannah College of Art and Design(SCAD). As part of my undergraduate program, I worked as an Intern for a year which helped me to gain professional knowledge and experiences in various �ields such as Designing, Building construction, Client relationship and others. SITE DETAILS LOCATION

T

he selected site for the design is located over 1,334 hectares (Ha), located at latitude 28’09” N and longitude 77’35” E, north of Jewar Village in Gautam Buddha District, Uttar Pradesh state, India. This is a live project undertaken by the Uttar Pradesh State Government. The site chosen is a second International Airport apart from existing Indira Gandhi International (IGIA) Airport, Delhi. The purpose of second airport is to divert the overflowing passenger traffic in IGI airport. Also the location of the new airport will be an easier connectivity to the internationally famous tourist place Taj Mahal in Agra city and closer to Yamuna Express way.

WHY JEWAR?

J

ewar city is considered as a fast growing satellite city of Delhi with several other infrastructure developments. Jewar city is geographically connects two main cities Delhi and Agra. This new Jewar international airport will be a key enabler for the development of an Industrial region (includes urban centers) and it will create a significant impact in the economy. Also this airport will be a nodal point for the passengers and tourists to travel central and northern parts of India conveniently.

CONNECTIVITY T

he selected site is well connected with NCR as well as various districts in western part of Uttar Pradash state. The site is about 30 km from the State Highway SH-22A which connects the two developing corridors (Palwal and Aligarh). The location of the airport will be connected to the proposed Palwal Khurja expressway. The site is well connected with the Industrial city Noida via Greater Noida by an National Highway (130 meter wide road).

ENHANCEMENT OF THE CONNECTIVITY BETWEEN THE TWO AIRPORTS The planned Rapid Rail Transit system is a high-speed transport system which is aimed to cater passengers looking to travel relatively long distances with fewer stops and at a higher speed. It is proposed to be connected to Delhi Metro via the Noida Metro route and via the Delhi-FaridabadBalramgarh–Palwal-Jewar route. Rail route proposal from the southern part of Jewar which runs from Kanpur.

Eastern Peripheral Expressway - Linking Palwal with Ghaziabad and Kundli running on the eastern side of Delhi, completes the ring system around Delhi.

Palwal-Khurja Expressway - Palwal is connected to Jewar via Palwal Aligarh road.

Eastern Peripheral Expressway - Connectivity from Manesar to Palwal and from Palwal to Jewar would connect the airport to the industrial region of NCR.

he passenger’s flow inside the airport has evolved in terms of its functions and securities has always been placed above the passenger comfort which has resulted in inconvenience and long halts for the passengers. Over the years, the evolution of lounges and duty free shops has improved the passenger comfort and increased the revenue for the airport authorities. Using the technological advancement, the security for the passengers has advanced tremendously.

Due to reduction in the passengers and luggage movement time, the airport authority has increased more airlines movements.

he passenger footfall has three main folds from access through the multi modal hub, relaxation and the technology for the passenger experiences. The access shall be through multiple modes. The main transport focus for the airport design would be metro and car. By adopting latest technologies, the passengers movement has become easier and faster.

CONCEPT

T

he form is inspired by the Lotus flower.

The main element inspired for the form is the scaled petal which is replicated in the roof structures. This gives an aesthetic beauty to the structure and also enhances the interior spaces.

he aircraft accommodation is constrained due to reduced number of aprons and hangers. The aircraft movement is restricted to the airside. The control tower is the heart of the airport, which controls the movement of the aircraft.

he flow of the baggage and the site level services to the building have distinct segregation.

Both in terms of the entry and space allocations, there is distinct separation and freedom of movement.

The main remote parking passenger core is zoned at the corner of the terminal closer to the idle parking, for time efficiency.

The main service lines from the basement core begin its distribution all through the floors from the ground level.

The baggage distribution is segregated with ample spaces for the movement of baggage and the movement of the baggage distribution units.

There is a clear separation for the transit passengers to move to the transit halls.

he airline level of the domestic terminal is at +10.5 level above the ground level.

The main segregation of the airline administration offices, baggage from the departure to the arrival floors, gate lounges, and transit lounges is designed with accuracy.

The double-height of the arrival level makes the interior space more lavish and extravagant.

The baggage flow from the departure to the ground service zone is isolated.

he ground floor is designed for the services of the terminal building.

The segregation of the arrival and departure baggage is allocated with separate entrances.

The ground handling systems and the service equipments are allocated with respective spaces.

The remote parking gate lounges are allocated at one end of the terminal to avoid the overlap of baggage units.

The catering services for the lounges have sufficient areas for their movement and distribution.

he departure floor is the floor with the maximum footfall all through.

The flow of the passengers follows the structure of the terminal in a cohesive manner.

Each of the core is segregated for three gate lounges to avoid stagnation of passengers at a single core.

The passengers to the remote parking gates move to the core at the end of the terminal to move to the ground level.

The large allocation of the dutyfree shops serves as the major revenue for the airline authority.

The displays of artworks are placed at the passage to the respective cores which distracts the people of the time.

he gate lounge is a part of the flow of the departure passengers and is the connection to the lower departure levels.

The unique elements of the interior include the massiveness of the gate lounges.

They and for

overlook the departure floor the large space allocation revenue duty-free shops.

The major revenue for the airports is from the duty-free and restaurants in the terminal and the gate lounge floor has a major contribution towards this revenue.

The double-height spaces bring massiveness to the spaces with stagnant passenger movement in the departure flow.

STRUCTURE ROOF TRUSS

T

he design of layers is being implemented in the roof structure which provides volume to the interior passengers. The height variations depend on the movement of the passengers and the spaces which the roof covers. The composite columns are larger in radius and span for the roofing. (25 X 25m). The grid followed for the international terminal varies depending on the spaces and counter arrangements.

The gutters run on the edges of the roof structures which help in the draining of the rainwater. The material used for the roof is the Kalzip aluminum panels which help in reducing high levels of noise and prevent the high gain of heat to the structure.

The eastern wing of the terminal is considered the tallest with a maximum height of 42m from the ground level.

T

he site allocated for the design of the school is 3 acres of land adjacent to the backwaters. The backwaters are an added element for the design. The point of attraction for the students can also be the natural element.

There are two adjacent roads to the site, which makes the site a corner plot and adds ease to transportation.

CONCEPT - INFINITY T

here is a flow at the site level with a sense of continuity. The comma shape from the top depicts this flow in its physical form. From the planning and interior flow, the classrooms are also arranged similarly to make the children have the same flow and to put them at ease.

The flow in the interior is also continuous with interruptions for the students and the staff. The atrium open green space gives a connection to nature from the interiors.

he classrooms are clustered around the central courtyard for the children to feel at ease in the corridor with natural ventilation. The clustering of three classrooms and a common play area allows little children to interact with each other. The common central landscape entertains children of all grades to interact.

he primary school campus accommodates five classes with three classroom clusters. The library is designed at the ground level for the access of staff members from the kinder-garden block. The classrooms are located facing the creek running in the back of the site, which lets students have direct interaction with nature.

he basic concept followed in the design is the contrasting sense of converging and diverging feeling for the customers.

Planning in a strategic manner where the people feel the convergence at the entrance and the divergence as the flow into the interior. The atrium is used as a common space for numerous common activities to take place. This atrium is not only experienced by the people present on the ground level but can be viewed by all the walk-ins in the mall. The major footfall spaces in the mall are the theatre, supermarket and large retail stores which are placed on the rear ends of the floor in the mall.

Primary roads

he Medical District of Savannah, is anchored by the two major hospitals, memorial health university, and St. Josephâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hospital spread at 118 acres. The goal was to create a healing environment for the patients and a lively neighborhood for the employers of the hospitals.

This analysis led to the proposal for the clustering of the smaller medical units into a single unit.

A

medical arts district is a culmination of medical institutions, research centers, individual health units and businesses supporting the whole. The function of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;chakraâ&#x20AC;? is to spin and draw in the energy to keep the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical health of the body in balance.

With respect to the modern physiology, we can see that these seven chakras corresponds exactly to the seven main nerve ganglia which emanate from the spine. The district is a culmination of medical institutions, research centers, individual health units and businesses that support the whole.

Receiving the inform of footfall sunlight and water. Diffusing these energies though accessible commute and sustainable interventions. Transmuting the urban fabric by clustering individual medical units into one thereby reducing the carbon footprint and energy bills. Redistributing of excess energy back to the grid.

SITE STUDY T

he areas at the site which needed to be the main focus of change to make the paths to the two anchored hospitals have been identified for design from the site analysis at the micro level. The main focus of the design is to cluster the fragmented smaller medical units to a main block which will ultimately reduce the consumption of resources and serve as a prototype for the later neighborhood.

aulsen street has a proposed pedestrian walkway with dual materials - synthetic paver and pebbled path, which provides a therapeutic experience for the pedestrians. The street acts as the spine connecting the Columbus dr. and derenne ave.

F

redrick street with the dominant pedestrian pathway has a linear park on one side, with a meditation space which can be accessed by the people at the counseling center in the adjacent plots as well. The landscape forms a natural seater for the pedestrian. This space provides a sense of healing which blends with our vision.

urther to the meditation patch is an open landscaped library with vertical gardening. This library is adjacent to the landmark hospital which makes it conveniently accessible to the employers and provides a sense of community well being.

DESIGN EVOLUTION STREET VIEWS

T

he redesign of the roads leading up to the two anchored hospitals and the clusters are designed to be pedestrian friendly and new incorporation of the cycle tracks. The tracks have a glow rubber material pedestrian flooring for the cyclists to ride even in the dark. The pedestrian path has numerous trees which by itself forms a natural shade for pedestrian.

he pedestrian pathway has two designed pockets of land which has shaded play area and resting stop for the passers and a community reading space for the employers of the hospital.

These two spaces make the Fredrick road the spine of the whole design and develops a communal spirit for the whole neighborhood.

lanning of the residence is done considering the circulation of spaces and the requirements of the client. There is a single car porch, large living room for gatherings, kitchen, dining, common restroom spaces. Two bedrooms and a guest bedroom with attached toilets is placed. The guest bedroom can be accessed directly from the outside. The kitchen has a semi open utility space.

The two bedrooms has a walk in closet. The living room has a semi open private garden space.

Keeping in mind for a future development there is a rear entry to the staircase leading to the staircase which in turn leads to a bedroom with attached toilet in the first level and the terrace.
