Special birthday present for 89 year-old local legend Marge Reynolds of Preeceville was no stranger to working with a team of horses in her younger years but has not had the opportunity to drive a team of horses in approximately 50 years.

She got her wish when her family surprised her with the opportunity on October 19.

“She has always talked about the past when she was a kid and she had to transport her siblings to school with a team of horses and a wagon,” said Arlee Thideman, son.

The family secretly told her they were going on a road trip to buy a harness from Walter Hughes who lives approximately 10 miles southwest of Preeceville.

Reynolds was excited when they arrived and she noticed a team of horses hooked up to a wagon.

When she realized she was going to get the opportunity to relive some childhood memories she was extremely excited and leaped onto the wagon.

“Throughout the entire trip with

After the trip the family was invited into the Hughes home for

coffee and refreshments.

“It sure was a huge surprise for me to get to drive a team of horses again. It has been 50 years since I last had the opportunity and

the best part was that my family managed to pull off the surprise right up to the last minute before I realized what they were up to,” laughed Reynolds.

Reynolds will be celebrating her 89th birthday on November 24 and her family has already presented her with a dishwasher for her home. The previous dishwasher had stopped working and she needed a new one for her busy life. She resides on a farm 12 miles north and one mile west of Preeceville, farms 100 head of cattle in the summer but only retains 50 head for the winter months.

She also keeps busy with a large garden, flowers, and loves to bake her own bread, buns and meals for herself, family and her hired hand who helps her on the farm.

“I have done a lot of things in my life,” said Reynolds. “I grew up in the Hazel Dell area where I was the oldest of 10 children.

I was my father’s helper in the farming business. We used horses for lots of things from cleaning out the barn, for field work and riding.

When I got older I got married and we farmed mink and some cattle

Canola field fundraiser is in the bin Continued from Page 1 The Preeceville Arena canola fundraiser harvest was finished on October 18.

The canola field was located approximately one mile west of Preeceville and was a volunteer effort.

“A big thank you goes out to so many people and organizations for another successful arena crop fundraising project,” said Andrea Tonn, Town of Preeceville recreation director and project organizer.

The fundraiser effort started off with the donation of the land by John and Carol Hoterra of Hoterra Farms. This year ’s crop of Nexera Canola yielded 42.5 bushels per acre and was harvested in less than four hours by Pattison Agriculture employees with Pattison Ag donating the use of the equipment.

was posing some challenges for all,” said Tonn. “A huge shout out to Boyd Ellis at Dow Agro Science for the seed which Sheldon Wallin was very helpful in getting to us. We applied a fungicide which was donated

by Derek Stykalo of Bayer Crop Science.”

“Spraying of the crop was donated by Colin Mastrachuk. We were very grateful to Peniuk Farms for donating swathing in this year’s fundraiser. Tyler Peniuk and Steven Mclean started the swathing by 6 a.m. to avoid further shelling of the crop and were very quick in getting the canola swathed,” she added.

The crop was seeded and harvested by Pattison Ag. Wes Jaeb was acknowledged for helping organize these efforts, along with Tim Olson, who has been in the operations side of things since the beginning of this fundraising project. Jason Anaka also helped the harvest by operating a combine.

“Another huge part of this fundraiser was trucking the canola to Yorkton Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC.) Highway 16 Transport once again helped us with the trucking which was greatly appreciated,” stated Tonn, “This was such a busy time of year for everyone but Highway 16 owners

“There were many private and corporate donations from the beginning and we are extremely grateful for all of this. Some of the funds have been used in upgrades

of the Preeceville Arena, a new sound system, score clock and we are currently in the process of washroom renovations. None of this would have been possible without everyone’s help in the past and in this year’s effort.

“We are extremely grateful and lucky for what we have in this community.

People and organizations pull together to help each other out. I hope everyone knows how much it is all appreciated,” concluded Tonn.

Ducks Unlimited banquet and auction held at Sturgis Ducks Unlimited Canada hosted its annual East Central Flyway fall banquet and fundraising auction on November 2 at the Sturgis Community Hall. The event included many raffles, and silent and live auction prizes.

Travis Behning of Regina, fundraising manager for Ducks Unlimited, welcomed everyone to a fun night of games and fundraising.

“The goal and focus for tonight is to raise funds and awareness for conservation of wetlands, water, wildlife and the ecosystem,” Behning said. “The mission of Ducks Unlimited is to conserve, restore and manage wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s waterfowl.

“These habitats benefit other wildlife, people and our environment,” he said. “We partner with government,

industry, non-profit organizations and landowners to get our work done so we can connect people to nature and make a healthier world for future generations.

“Volunteer support is what makes Ducks Unlimited such a success. Last year the Sturgis event was the best fall banquet with raising the highest amount in history.

All funds raised completely stay in the province and are used to help fund local organizations. Tonight’s proceeds go to Sturgis Minor Ball,” said Behning.

Province and pharmacists reach one-year agreement The provincial government and the Pharmacy Association of Saskatchewan (PAS) have reached a new one-year agreement.

“Pharmacists play an important role in providing better access to appropriate patient care and improving the patient experience,” J i m R e i t e r, m i n i s t e r o f health, said in a release.

“This agreement recognizes that we value pharmacists’ significant contributions to

the Saskatchewan health system.”

As of October 22, pharmacists are being funded to give flu shots to children ages five to eight as well as to people living in settings such as personal care homes and assisted living apartments. Previously under the province’s publicly- funded influenza vaccination program, pharmacists gave flu shots to people aged nine and older at pharmacies only.

In recent years, the Ministry of Health has supported a number of significant initiatives and programs, including additional pharmacist-prescribing services, to help pharmacists work toward their full scope of practice and to provide important medication management services for Saskatchewan residents.

Other highlights of the new agreement that take effect November 1, include: • Expanding the

ministry’s Minor Ailment Program to include pharmacist prescribing for 10 new minor ailments and self-care conditions. These include uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women, hormonal contraceptives, emergency contraceptives, conjunctivitis (pink eye), shingles, onychomycosis (fungal nail infection), influenza, obesity, erectile dysfunction, and smoking cessation. “The agreement will help community pharmacies maintain outstanding

LOOKING BACK...

A Decade Ago

Preeceville Hospital construction was nearly complete but progress was being held up due to lack of available contractors, said Joanne Bodnar, Preeceville Hospital administrator. ***** Parents, students and visitors were introduced to the various school goals in math and reading by Principal Brad Cameron at the Sturgis Elementary School open house during Education Week. ***** Kim Dyky and her niece Chloe Chornomitz looked over all the books for sale at the Preeceville School book fair held during Education Week. ***** Preeceville School students Kerrie Craske, Brooke Strand, Hillary Ivanochko and Meagan Barabash got into the Halloween spirit as they dressed up as Rice Krispies, Snap, Crackle and Pop. ***** The Preeceville Hospital building fund committee made a special presentation to Mary Petrowski for all her hard work, dedication and volunteerism for the hospital during a fall supper. ***** The Preeceville Panthers senior football team came a step closer to becoming provincial champions with a 38 to 33 semifinal victory over Biggar thanks to a last-minute game-winning touchdown pass from Rodney Serhan to Cameron Kennedy. ***** Stella Holmes, Scott Krekawetz, JJ Guy and June Jakubowski supplied musical entertainment for the Preeceville Hospital Building Fund fall supper.

Ford may not be a great Moe ally When you think about it, the Saskatchewan Party should be “Standing up for Saskatchewan.”

After all, the reason for their very existence is pretty much spelled out in their name.

Of course, the NDP have always taken umbrage with the fact that the conservative-based party chose to title itself after the province.

But this is a rather conservative province, or at least, it’s been more conservative than not.

Since the 20-year, post-Depression, post-Second World War run of Tommy Douglas’s CCF, a different political party for a different era, ended in 1964, Saskatchewan has seen more days with non-NDP governments than with NDP governments.

And should current opinion polls showing the Sask.

Party substantially ahead hold up until the 2020 vote, the Sask. Party will have a run of majority governments in Saskatchewan only exceeded by the Douglas government.

Moreover, it’s now been 30 years since Saskatchewan has sent a majority of NDP MPs to Ottawa. Since 2000, this province has only elected three NDP MPs. Standing up for Saskatchewan and its rather conservative outlook should be a natural thing for Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe. So one can only wonder why Moe feels the need to stand up for Saskatchewan alongside Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

opposition to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax for a considerable time.

As Moe pointed out after returning from his second press conference with Ford in two weeks, Ford was elected with a solid majority earlier this year to fight the carbon tax.

But there’s another of way of looking at this, especially in the context of what’s worked well for the Sask. Party in its long run in office and what it needs to avoid.

As you well know, the Sask. Party was formed as a coalition of Progressive Conservatives, Reformers and Liberals as a means of ending the vote split by parties in Saskatchewan right of the NDP. (Really, old Liberals and Progressive Conservatives splitting the vote in this province was the biggest reason why the runs of the CCF-NDP Douglas, Allan Blakeney and Roy Romanow-Lorne Calvert governments were extended as long as they were.)

As such, it would seem advisable for the Sask. Party to stay on that coalition track and focus on its successful Saskatchewan-first approach.

That clearly worked well in former premier Brad Wall’s 2010 national campaign that lobbied the Conservative government to stop the BHP Billiton takeover of PotashCorp.

Certainly, one can argue that Moe is still doing the same thing in his “Standing up for Saskatchewan” campaign, the theme of the throne speech that was all about the carbon tax fight.

But if you are making a solid argument that this carbon tax fight is all about what’s good for Saskatchewan people and not just a political fight with Trudeau to the benefit Andrew Scheer’s federal Conservatives, there is a better way to go about it than simply aligning yourself with Doug Ford.

While Ford did defeat what seemed to be a very bad Ontario Liberal government under Kathleen Wynne, he also came to office with substantial political baggage of his own.

And Moe’s strategist might also be a little wary of attaching the Sask. Party to a new Ontario government already running into its fair share of problems because of controversial policies.

Maybe it can be argued that Moe can’t fight this carbon tax alone.

But recruiting economists and even environmentalists (some of whom say the carbon tax won’t work) would be more productive for Moe. Opposition to the carbon tax has to be about what’s good for Saskatchewan, not what’s good for conservatives.

A 100th anniversary with much meaning This November marks the 100th anniversary of the end of one of the bloodiest and most horrific conflicts of the 20th century. The First World War was particularly significant for Canada as by its conclusion our country would have proven her worth as a valuable ally, thereby gaining global recognition and more autonomy as a nation.

In August 1914 Canadians found themselves automatically involved when Great Britain declared war on Germany. As a member of the British Empire, Canada had no say in the matter. And so it was that young men from Saskatchewan found themselves enthusiastically enlisting for a war that they believed would end successfully

and quickly. In fact, many believed that they would be back home by Christmas and that their participation was no more than a grand adventure.

They had no idea of what horrors lay ahead.

The Second Battle of Ypres saw the first major engagement of Canadian troops.

It was here on April 22, 1915, that Germans waited until the wind blew in the right direction and then released chlorine gas. When the sickly greenish-yellow cloud wafted over the Allied line, the French contingent broke and ran, leaving a huge hole in the middle.

Canadian troops quickly moved in to defend the exposed gap in the defensive line. They stayed strong even

while enduring another hit of the deadly gas. Men soaked their handkerchiefs in muddy water or even their own urine to avoid breathing the deadly air. The Canucks held the line until British reinforcements were able to assist. Many believe, had the Germans broken through and advanced, the war might have come to a quick end.

From then on, Canadian forces would be regarded as storm troopers, tough and formidable on the battlefield. But that reputation would come at a high cost; 6,000 dead, missing, or wounded within the space of a few short days.

Canadian troops would go on to distinguish themselves many more times; at the Battle of the Somme,

Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, and the final breakthrough at Amiens. British Prime M in is ter Llo y d G e o rg e would note, “Whenever the Germans found the Canadian Corps coming into the line, they prepared for the worst.”

The four divisions of the Canadian Corps had earned this high regard by defeating 47 German divisions, which was one quarter of the German army. As they fought, they liberated more than 200 cities and towns and captured more than 30,000 enemy soldiers.

But the price Canadians paid in the process was high.

Almost 620,000 men served.

More than 66,000 died and more than 172,000 were wounded, often horribly so.

The culmination of the First World War brought an end to one of the nastiest, most horrific, and terrible conflicts fought under inhumane conditions, but 1918 also signified the beginning of a new era for Canada.

Historians generally agree that Canada, through bloodshed, had won its rightful autonomy.

A new attitude prevailed where public admiration and support for old school imperialism had faded and lost its appeal. The toll of the war forever tarnished the allure of fighting for glory. But on a more positive note, Canada’s image at home and her status abroad were enhanced.

At Prime Minister Robert Borden’s insistence, Canada

signed the Treaty of Versailles independently.

Thus began our journey to assuming our rightful place as an autonomous nation on the world stage. No longer would Canada be content to be treated as a subordinate nation.

According to historian Arthur Lower, “Canada entered the war a colony, she emerged from it close to an independent nation.”

On this 100th anniversary, let us remember the sacrifices that were made not only to end the First World War, but also to firmly establish our nationhood.

100 years since the end the Great War, and what do we really know?

This November 11 will mark the 100th anniversary of the guns falling silent; at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month. The Great War, which has since become known as the First World War, was over.

In recent years, I’ve used the reference of the Great War more often than not, because that is what it was known as by those who fought it. Most people today wouldn’t even know that.

And that’s why, instead of talking about the impact, or the horrors of war, this time I’m going to suggest some ways people can better educate themselves about the War to End All Wars, that didn’t end wars in the slightest. Instead, it led to the biggest one of all.

Several audiobooks (and, correspondingly, their hardcopy versions, if you prefer) have opened my eyes.

The Great War very much led to the Second World War. The early parts of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany, by William L. Shirer, an American journalist in Berlin during the rise of Hitler who often saw him in action, first hand, from 1933 until 1940.

He goes into this in great length, following how Adolf Hitler was affected by the Great War, and how its outcome was an enormous motivator for his later actions.

Hitler’s nemesis in the Second World War was Winston Churchill, a man who was an instrumental player, at least in the early years, on the British side during the Great War as First Lord of the Admiralty. He was the guy who came up with the Gallipoli campaign to seize the Dardanelles. It was an inspirational stroke that all went to naught due to the British admirals flubbing their element of surprise. The Gallipoli disaster had a huge impact on Churchill, who gave

up his cabinet seat and went and fought in the trenches.

Churchill also was the one who came up with the idea for the tank, something that has changed war ever since.

The most significant book, for me, is A World Undone: The Story of the Great War, 1914 to 1918, by G. J. Meyer.

I thought I knew something about this war before. I found out I knew squat. While this book is very difficult to get into, with the lengthy explanations of how various countries came to mobilize, once the guns start firing, it picks up from there.

For those who aren’t into audiobooks or reading, there is a remarkable YouTube series I’ve just discovered in recent weeks.

It’s called The Great War, and can be found at www. youtube.com/user/TheGreatWar. The channel’s description notes, “The Great War covers the events exactly 100 years ago: The story of World War I in real time. Featuring: The unique archive material of British Pathé. Indy Neidell takes

you on a journey into the past to show you what really happened and how it all could spiral into more than four years of dire war.”

It’s an absolutely fascinating body of work. Taking over four years, the video series, each a little over 10 minutes, goes week-by-week explaining what happened during that week of the war. It wraps up this week, and as a result, it is possible to binge-watch the entire series.

(They started doing the same treatment to the Second World War this fall. Look up World War Two on YouTube.

It’s also great to watch.)

In addition to the weekly episodes of The Great War, they have done an enormous number of snippets, profiling everything from tank tactics to mountain combat. Many individuals are profiled.

While the name of Canadian Billy Bishop is well known as our premier flying ace, have you ever heard of Francis Pegahmagabow? Me neither. But the series says he, First Nations man, was the most successful sniper of the whole war, credited with killing 378 Germans and capturing another 300 more. He was born on what is now known as Shawanaga First Nation in Ontario.

Let’s put this into perspective: Vasily Zaytsev, the hero of Stalingrad, who has had a Hollywood movie, Enemy at the Gates, made after him, is credited with 225 kills. Yet no one has heard of the Canadian sniper Francis Pegahmagabow.

And that’s my point. I’ve studied the Great War a bit, and there is so much that most people don’t know about the conflict that, today, still shapes our lives.

All of these are well worth a read, a listen or a watch, because the War to End All Wars certainty didn’t.

The carbon tax and what it means for prairie farmers Few things are more concerning in business than the possible impact of something new and unknown.

And that is exactly what the agriculture sector is facing as the Canadian government remains steadfast in its commitment to implement a carbon tax.

On October 23, the federal government announced it will be applying its federal carbon pricing system to Saskatchewan as well as to Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick in 2019. The carbon policy will add a tax to fossil fuel production and distribution and for industrial emitters.

The federal government

also announced that farmers will receive an exemption for on-farm use of fuel for farm machinery and rural residents would receive a supplement.

The Saskatchewan government has balked at the tax from day one, and is initiating a court challenge, although that effort seems rather hypocritical when you consider they blocked municipalities in the province from turning to the courts when the province tore up long-standing grantsin-lieu agreements in 2017.

F o r t h o s e f o rg e t t i n g that effort, SaskPower and SaskEnergy took a flat percentage of utility sales within a municipality. In the case of SaskPower, the payments

in lieu were provided to 13 cities.

In the case of SaskEnergy, there are 97 municipalities, including those 13 cities, which received the payments. The program dated back to the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s, when SaskPower was amalgamating electrical distribution systems in the province. Municipalities

also gave up their right to establish any natural gas distribution systems. A number of agreements were entered into for the Crowns to provide payments to compensate municipalities for lost revenue.

But apparently the federal initiative is worth fighting in the courts, even if municipal governments weren’t afforded that same right for grants in

lieu.

Agriculture producer groups are also fearful of the carbon tax. The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association came out recently suggesting it is “unconvinced that a carbon pricing policy would make any meaningful reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions looking at the experience of other provinces and countries because it is economically inefficient,” according to an SSGA release.

“Despite these rebates and exemptions, producers will still be facing higher costs to run their operations,” said SSGA President Bill Huber in the release.

In addition to fuel,

producers use goods and services like feed and inputs from other sectors which are expected to pass down their added expenses onto cattle producers, detailed the release.

“Getting Saskatchewan cattle to domestic and world markets will also become more expensive because there are few fuel-efficient transport options. As a result, Canadian beef, which is produced sustainably, efficiently and with one of the smallest carbon footprints in the world, will become less competitive in the global market,” it stated.

But will it work? The answer next week.

Tribute to First World War veteran Arnold Sofus Petersen Arnold Sofus Petersen, had many titles in his life: Danish immigrant, farmer/ h o m e s t e a d e r, s o l d i e r, veteran, husband, father, grandfather and greatgrandfather, stated Agnes Murrin of Preeceville, his granddaughter.

Petersen was born on December 18, 1891 in Horsens, Jutland Denmark; one of eight children. He served two years in the Jutland rifles prior to immigrating to Canada in 1912 at the age of 20.

“The story told in the family is that he was in Southampton, England and had a ticket on the Titanic but turned it in for a cheaper fare on the Ascania sailing the same month,” said Murrin.

“We are really glad for his Danish frugality or we may not all be here.”

As he was away and could not improve the homestead land, it had to be forfeited.

Like many soldiers he did not speak of the war to his family.

“As a child I can seldom remember him ever speaking of the war except to say that war was horrible and hoped we would never have another,” said Murrin.

Because of his training in the Jutland rifles he was considered a good shot and was assigned sniper duties.

Peterson sustained a shell concussion in September of 1916. He suffered a severe headache for four days and damage to his ear but returned to duty. On Christmas Day, December 25, 1916 while serving in Arras, France he was severely injured Continued on Page 10

The northern town of Arras had a secret military city underground where 25,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers lived just yards beneath an unsuspecting German army.

“The staircase of the tunnel led to fresh air and sunlight but was also a stairway to hell,” Murrin said.

“The tunnels were wide enough for the soldiers to march in one direction and pass the stretcher parties coming the other way.

My grandfather was lying on one of those stretchers severely wounded and suffering loss of blood as an artery had been damaged,” stated Murrin.

He was transported to the field dressing station at Rocling Court a n d t h e n t o t h e 4 2 nd Casualty Clearing Station

at Aubigny France. He was operated on there.

Aubigny is a village about 15 kilometres northwest of Arras. There is a large local cemetery with 2,771 Commonwealth burials.

“Thankfully my grandfather was not one of them,” said Murrin.

He survived the surgery and on December 27 was moved to the Canadian Hospital in the port town of La Treporte, France, stabilized some more and

then on January 8, 1917 arrived at Bagthorpe Hospital in Nottingham, England.

“As a nurse, the thought of all those moves, the pain and exposure to unsanitary conditions makes me cringe,” said Murrin.

“Needless to say he had an infection in the wound.

He spent two months at that hospital before being moved to Westcliffe Hospital in Folkestone Continued on Page 11

He never spoke of any of this while he was alive.

Murrin was able to get his military record from the archives in Ottawa.

“The good news in all this is that while convalescing he met Agnes Emily Ford; a young English lady working in the hospital. After getting permission from the army to marry (yes you had to

He spent the remainder of the war in England serving in various capacities. He returned to Canada on January 1919 by ship, Empress of Britain. His wife also came by ship in 1919 as a war bride. He was honorably discharged from the military in Winnipeg on February 12, 1919.

The family has his medals (Victory Medal and British War Medal) and some of his story but unfortunately not all of it.

His leg never really healed properly and caused him a lot of pain.

He was able to walk only after regular cortisone injections to the area.

After the war Peterson returned to farming, initially to a home on the shore of Lake Lomond but this house burnt down.

They moved eight miles west of Preeceville to the Noor place.

Arnold and Agnes had seven children who attended Beaver Falls

School. He was very active in the Saskatchewan Co-op Creamery, Poplar Grove Lutheran Church, and Ketchen Cemetery Board. Agnes was active in the Ketchen community. They had many Ladies Aid gatherings at the Petersen home.

They retired and moved to Preeceville in 1956 and operated the Farmers Cafe for a couple of years (where Paul’s Drugs is located.)

Agnes passed away at a fairly young age in 1959.

In 1970, only Arnold and his friend Ernest K e i g h l e y o f Wi n n i p e g were the remaining survivors of 60 men of the “C” Company of No.9 Platoon o f t h e 5 3 rd B a t t a l i o n .

Arnold passed away in 1973. Peterson has one surviving daughter. One of his sons was Murrin’s late father, Ernie Petersen.

Arnold was proud of his children and grandchildren and took an active interest in their education.

He was a firm believer in getting a good education.

Arnold Sofus Petersen of Preeceville received the Victory Medal and British War Medal while he was enlisted in the army.

“He served his country and we are all proud of him and his sacrifices,” said Murrin.

“On November 11 please wear a poppy and take time to remember

my grandfather, all the Preeceville veterans and all the soldiers who sacrificed so much to provide us all the freedoms we enjoy. I know I will remember. Thank-you Grandpa.”

by Maureen Johnson of P re e c e v i l l e . T h e l e t t e r was written to Johnson’s mother Laura Logan of Sheho by her cousin Eileen Warwick of Leeds England and was dated June 24, 1940. It explained much of what they faced in England during the war.

“It was a great surprise to discover this very old letter and after reading it a few times it has left a considerable impression on me, especially with the war raging on at the time,” said Johnson.

George (Eileen’s husband) and Donald (Eileen’s 6-year-old son) went in but I sat and watched. There were hundreds of soldiers in the water. They can go in for free. We have thousands billeted in Leeds and the suburbs in private houses.

They are men of the British Empire Forces who took part in the Evacuation from Dunkirk, poor devils.

Everybody is doing all they can to make them forget what they have

seen and gone through.

They are grand lads. We watched hundreds of them drilled in the park this morning. They look so well and brown.

We are having a marvellous summer after a most terrible winter. We have had no rain for weeks but could do with some.

You have should have seen the bluebells in the woods a few weeks ago, but they are all gone now and also the fruit blossoms have dried away. The roses are all out now and we are getting all the soft fruits and green peas and new potatoes.

I am attending war-time cookery classes at Donald’s school every Thursday.

They are to teach us to make the best of the foods we are able to obtain and to make

things without sugar, eggs or butter.

Please don’t think we are starving, far from it, but lots of things are rationed and some things are too dear

(expensive) for working people to buy.

Paying tribute to Canadian Armed Forces members Every Remembrance Day, Canadians honour our Canadian Armed Forces members and veterans, including police officers, who have served and are currently serving our country.

Canada has marked several important anniversaries this year. In August we commemorated the 76th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid, the 75th anniversary of the invasion of Sicily and the beginning of the Italian Campaign in the Second World War. This year we recognize the 65th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice and the 10th anniversary of National

Peacekeepers’ Day. 2018 is the 100th anniversary of the Armistice and the final one hundred days of the Great War that preceded it. In celebration of the end of the First World War, bells will ring at sundown in communities across Canada and in the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill, as they did a century ago. On November 11, 1918, bells also rang in the churches of Mons, Belgium, the final town liberated by the Canadian Corps.

The Bells of Peace will chime in honour of those who served Canada, past

and present; pealing across our land as a symbol of peace, victory, relief and joy on the 100th anniversary of the Armistice.

The courage and valour of those who served in the first half of the 20th century is reflected in the continued tradition of service by today’s Canadian Armed Forces. Numerous people from this area served as uniformed officers and many from the riding of Yorkton-Melville serve today. If you have had or currently have a family member in the forces, you realize that when someone serves in Canada’s forces,

their whole family serves with them.

Often the formerly enlisted prefer not to speak about their experiences.

The sacrifices made were and are too great, often unspeakably horrific. Friends lost friends and much more on those early battlefields.

I n t h e F i r s t Wo r l d Wa r alone, 61,000 Canadians were killed and even more wounded. Of those who survived, 3,461 men and one woman lost limbs.

The tally of physical injuries sustained in any war doesn’t begin to address the invisible wounds that may include a loss of innocence,

sanity and mental health.

P T S D ( P o s t - Tr a u m a t i c Stress Disorder) remains an ongoing and for some, never-ending, battle. This is as true today as it was a century ago.

How vital it is to recognize and honour the immeasurable contributions of thousands of our brave Canadians in uniform since the First World War. Their battle was and still is to preserve the freedom we enjoy today. On several fronts, those very freedoms are increasingly in jeopardy.

I join you in gratitude for our peaceful, free country,

and for those responsible for guarding that peace and freedom throughout our history. I also join the rest of Canada in prayer for all our enlisted service-people and their families, who risk so much to keep our land glorious and free.

Thank you to all who work hard to keep this vital Remembrance Day observance alive in your communities. And on November 11th at sundown, ring a bell. Lest we forget.

The Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission announced the appointment of Mr. Barry Wilcox, Q.C., as its new deputy chief commissioner.

The Government of Saskatchewan made the 5-year term appointment on September through an order in council, sais a release.

“Mr. Wilcox has been a commissioner with the SHRC for the past seven years, and in that time has worked diligently to promote and protect human rights in this province,” said David Arnot, chief commissioner. “I know that Barry’s commitment to inclusion and his experience will enable him to excel in his new role as deputy chief commissioner.”

Born and raised in Prince Albert, Wilcox has spent his entire career in the city. He is a senior member of Prince Albert’s legal community and is a partner with Novus Law

OBITUARIES

POPOWICH - Andrew Popowich of the Sturgis district died on October 30, 2018 in his sleep at Preeceville and District Health Centre at the age of sixty nine years. Andrew was born on November 30, 1948 on a farm near Sturgis to George and Mary (nee Kalenchuk) Popowich, where he grew up with thirteen siblings. Andrew was the baby of the family. Farming was Andrew’s passion along with fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed playing cards and was always interested in knowing what other people were doing. Andrew was associated with the Sturgis congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He was baptized on April 20, 1968. Andrew is survived by his siblings, Mike, Rose Frederickson, Elizabeth Powlousky and Metro as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Nellie, John, Steve, Bill, Tom, Anne, Ellen, Dorothy and Nick. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, November 3rd at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Sturgis with Pat Popowich officiating. Interment followed in the family plot in the Sturgis Community Cemetery with Jamin Popowich, James Prekaski, Heath Popowich, Dan Popowich, Kevin Frederickson & Ernest Scebenski served as casket bearers.

Memorial donations may be made to the Preeceville Hospital Axillary or to the charity of one’s choice as gifts of remembrance. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.preecevillefuneralhome.com. Arrangements were entrusted to Preeceville Funeral Home.

Today, I am going to discuss the rules around hunting from a boat and hunting from a road. There are some restrictions and differences between hunting big game and waterfowl.

legally carry a loaded firearm in a boat. Even though it is legal to carry loaded firearms and shoot from a boat, you need to consider the size of the boat and the safety of the other occupants. A good practice is to turn off the motor and wait until the boat is still prior to firing.

Remember that if you are hunting big game from a boat, do not fire your rifle within 500 metres of an occupied cabin or building. Make sure your shot is taken safely with care to what is beyond the target.

You can legally have multiple firearms in the boat and they can all be loaded.

There are other considerations while hunting big game from a boat. If you harvest your animal from a boat, wait until it gets to shore. Shooting your harvest while it is swimming is not a good idea, as it makes retrieval very difficult. Keep in mind that The Wildlife Act prohibits the wasting or abandonment of game.

Hunting from a boat

LINDSEY LEKO is whether or not you are chasing, worrying or harassing the animal with the boat. Legally, you are not allowed to chase wildlife with a boat. You can hunt big game from a boat, but you cannot chase it or drive it towards other hunters.

While hunting waterfowl, having a boat or some other means of retrieval is important and mandatory. If you have a dog that does not mind getting wet, that is great.

Otherwise it is waders, a boat or you are getting wet.

After you pull the trigger and the ducks hit the water, they are not going to swim

to you.

You can legally shoot waterfowl from a boat, but the motor must be shut off and there can be no forward movement as a result of the boat’s propulsion equipment. As is the case with big game, you are not allowed to chase waterfowl with a boat. If the wind blows, that is OK, but movement of the boat cannot be generated by the motor.

Many hunters have a blind in the boat.

Remember that you can only have one operational gun in your blind, so if you have a second gun it must be unloaded and encased or dismantled so it is inoperable.

There are no motor or size restrictions for hunting wildlife from a boat.

After reading some of the comments on social media about hunting from roads, I felt that I should address this again.

Many people know that it is unlawful to shoot across or down any provincial highway or road

(provincial and municipal.)

H o w e v e r, m a n y p e o p l e don’t realize that it is also unlawful to shoot from any provincial highway, provincial road or municipal road.

This means shooting from a trail on a quarter section of land that you have legal access to is legal. The same is true if you are shooting from a road allowance without a road.

Q: Is a bow considered a firearm under the Saskatchewan Wildlife Act? Yes, a firearm is any device from which any shot, bullet or missile is propelled from, including a rifle, shotgun, pellet gun, air gun, pistol, revolver, spring gun, long bow or crossbow.

Q: Is it legal to use a rifle or a bow to hunt waterfowl?

In Saskatchewan, it is unlawful to hunt waterfowl with a rifle, but it is legal to hunt waterfowl with a recurve bow or compound bow.

Q: Can I have a digital

copy of my migratory game bird permit rather than a printed copy?

No. Federal regulations require that you print and sign your migratory game bird permit while hunting waterfowl. A digital copy does not meet the regulatory requirements. However, you can have a digital copy of your Saskatchewan game bird hunting licence, which is also required to hunt migratory birds in Saskatchewan.

Second World War veteran reflects on War Amps 100 Years of “Amputees Helping Amputees” On November 11, Second World War veteran Charlie Jefferson will not only be thinking of all those who have served and continue to serve on behalf of Canada, he will also be reflecting on the 100th anniversary of The War Amps, an organization which has supported him and generations of amputees.

In March 1945, Jefferson was serving as a Lieutenant with the Q u e e n ’s O w n R i f l e s Regiment in the Rhine Valley, Germany. He was injured by an anti-personnel mine explosion, resulting in the loss of his left leg below the knee. When he returned to Canada, he was greeted by a war

amputee veteran who reassured him that living with an amputation would not be a barrier to a successful life and that The War Amps would be there to support him.

T h e Wa r A m p s w a s started in 1918 by amputee veterans returning from the First World War to help each other in adapting to their new reality as amputees. They then welcomed amputee veterans following the Second World War, like Jefferson, sharing all that they had learned, as well as starting the Key Tag Service to allow these new members to gain meaningful employment and provide a service to the public.

gained practical advice from fellow amputee veterans, like how to protect the skin on his stump from blisters. He added that the moral support he received was just as important because it made him feel like he was not alone.

“It became easier to accept your amputation and helped make the most of what you’ve got left,” says Jefferson.

Over the years, he “paid it forward” by visiting new amputees in hospitals and at their homes to provide the same guidance that he had been given. “I would tell them what success I had and what was working for me, so there was a camaraderie and information transfer,” he says.

This peer support was then passed on to a new generation. In 1975, war amputee veterans recognized that their knowledge and experience could help others so they started The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, which provides financial assistance for the cost of artificial limbs and re gional seminars to young amputees.

“On Remembrance Day, I think of the incredible legacy these First and Second World War ‘amps’, like Mr. Jefferson, have created for all amputees in this country,” says Larman.

“I’m proud to, in turn, help the younger amputees who have come after me.”

veterans started The War Amps, they could not have predicted that their founding principle of “amputees helping amputees” would still be going strong 100 years later. Thanks to the public’s continuing support of the Key Tag Service, The War Amps vital programs for amputees across Canada will carry on long into its second century.

The air cadet program is open to youths between 12 and 18 years and there is no registration fee.

“There are 46 cadets registered to the program this year,” said Capt. Troy Rogowski. “New cadets to the squadron receive a complete uniform. The new cadets are taught rules and routine drill manoeuvres throughout the year by leaders as well as older cadets.”

The purpose of cadets is to develop in youths the attributes of leadership and engage in active citizenship and physical fitness within an environment that stimulates an interest in the Canadian Forces, a release said. The cadets are funded by the Department of National Defense, the Air Cadet League (a civilian non-profit organization), Navy League and the Army League. The motto of the air cadets is “To Learn, To Serve, To Advance.”

Cadets are given the opportunity to travel, go to Camp Saskadet and do a variety of monthly activities, Rogowski said.

They also play a part in the community with their attendance and participation in the Preeceville School Remembrance Day Service and the annual Remembrance Day Service.

The cadets will be sponsoring a weekly bingo every Thursday at the Preeceville Club 60.
