Focus on Remembrance Day with first poppy purchase

Riders acknowledged during annual awards banquet The Etoimamie Valley Riders Club acknowledged its riders during its combined fall trail ride and annual banquet and awards hosted at the farm of Tom and Shirley Babchishin on October 26.

“We had 17 riders and one wagon driven by Rae Rosenkerr, who let our younger members ride along on the wagon with him. It was a windy day but everyone had fun on the 14-mile ride, stopping at the halfway point for hotdogs and juice,” said Ronda Palaniuk, club member.

This year the club combined the annual trail ride and awards night. “When we finished the trail ride we

gathered in Tom and Shirley Babchishin’s heated shop for a potluck supper followed by our awards,” stated Palaniuk.

Lisa Neilson, club president was mistress of ceremonies and introduced the event winners with acknowledgement to the sponsors.

“I want to thank everyone for coming on our trail,” said Neilson. “This is our sixth year for the trail ride and the first time for combining the awards portion and ride together,” she said.

In the weepee category, barrels, Jade Beatty won first place and received a camouflage hat and buff sponsored by Reiden Hodgetts.

Hockey players and figure skaters were joined by the community in kicking off the new hockey season at the Preeceville Arena on October 27.

Preeceville skaters celebrate first time on the ice this season with free skate The Preeceville Arena kicked off its season with welcoming all skaters to dust off their skates and join hockey players and figure skaters with a free general skate on October 27.

“Practice began on October 28 and continued through the week, for all hockey players,” said

Candace Kuta, representative of Minor Hockey.

There will be six hockey divisions. IP (Initial Players) will have Ashley Ward as coach.

Dean Serdachny will be the coach for both novice and atom.

bantams and Kirby Pankratz is the coach for midgets.

Jesse Nelson is the caretaker for the arena.

Preeceville Figure Skating will kick off its season with Heather Jaeb as coach. She will be responsible for instructing skaters in CanSkate and Star Skate programs.

Minor Hockey was to host a referee clinic on November 2. The hockey club will also be hosting two Adam Herold Camps with the first one held November 30 to December 1 and the second scheduled for January 4 and 5.

Other groups scheduled to use the rink include recreation hockey and

3 5 - a n d - o v e r h o c k e y. A House Hockey League instructed by Nathan Maier for players who want to play hockey without the commitment that can otherwise be associated with hockey is scheduled for Fridays, stated Maier.

The bantams will be the first to host a home

game on November 9 against Churchbridge and the midgets will play host to Ochap on November 9.

The midgets will host a home game against Melville on November 12; bantams will host Yorkton on November 16 and the peewees will host Yorkton in the home opener on November 19.

Moe and Saskatchewan Party best when leading with optimism The Saskatchewan Legislature is sitting again and one wouldn’t necessarily think the politicians returning to the place where they’re the most political would be welcomed.

But after a federal election that produced maddening results for Westerners and a whole lot of uncertainty about what lies ahead, it turns out that an upbeat Speech from the Throne is exactly what we needed.

The Saskatchewan Party government’s new plan contained a call for 200,000 more people and 100,000 more jobs by 2030; aggressive goals that will be tough to attain.

It took Saskatchewan 19 years, from 2000 until now, to create the last 100,000 jobs added to our workforce.

That period included the boom between 2007 and 2011, which is rather telling. While there are always years when we add 10,000 plus jobs to the work force, there are also bust years when we lose jobs. It’s always two steps forward, one step back.

S i m i l a r l y, a d d i n g a n o t h e r 2 2 5 , 5 3 8 p e o p l e t o Saskatchewan to reach 1.4 million (the total now is at 1,174,462) by 2030 will be exceedingly tough.

Yes, the province did meet the Sask. Party’s initial 2007 goal of growing the province by 100,000 people in its first decade in office. In fact, it met that target in less than half time.

However, that was during the record resource boom from 2007 to 2011. It seems unlikely to experience that kind of boom again any time soon.

But the issue isn’t meeting ambitious goals: it’s having

the courage to make them in the first place. That’s something not all governments are willing to do.

Moreover, the intangible side effect of all this is it affords the province a little optimism and faith in in itself.

And having a little optimism seems to be exactly what we could all use after a miserable election campaign that has resulted in a minority Liberal government that’s now frustrating so many.

That minority government has no Liberal representation in Alberta or Saskatchewan to serve at the cabinet table, but Premier Scott Moe has pointed out the problem is bigger than that.

It isn’t so much who is in the next Liberal minority government cabinet, but “what that cabinet actually does,” Moe said.

There is legitimacy to Moe’s frustrations about pipelines and the carbon tax and added fear that a Justin Trudeau minority federal government will not address them.

However, maybe it’s here that Moe needs to pump the brakes a little, or at least draw on the same hope and optimism his government demonstrated in its Throne Speech.

So frustrated are people out here with the federal election results that it’s given rise to talk of Saskatchewan and/ or Alberta becoming independent, or perhaps joining the United States.

There was a meeting in Lloydminster to explore ways to “deal with the situation Western Canada finds itself in after the election results.”

Obviously, Moe is not lending his support to the #Wexit movement that’s had 200,000 hits on its Facebook page.

He said his position is that “Saskatchewan should be in a strong and united Canada.”

However, Moe has also stopped short of outright condemning Western separation. Instead, he is using the threat posed by this anger and this movement as grounds for a “new deal” within the confederation.

The Saskatchewan Premier needs to be careful here. He needs to understand how this can add fuel to the prairie fire.

Moe is right to point out the frustrations and the need for Trudeau to address them.

But a far more effective way to accomplish this is a clear message that this can be best accomplished in a stable Canadian federation.

Moe and others need to draw on the optimism in their own Throne Speech.

Considerations for small nuclear reactors in Saskatchewan In the recent speech from the Throne, the Saskatchewan government announced it is seriously looking at small modular nuclear reactors for future power generation in this province.

It is readily apparent that any small nuclear reactor design is going to have its roots firmly anchored in the United States Navy’s nuclear submarine program. And from that, there is much to be learned.

In 1955, the USS Nautilus changed the world, setting sail under nuclear power. Her revolutionary new power plant allowed her to be the first to sail under the icecap to the north pole.

The U.S. Navy was soon putting nuclear reactors in everything it possibly could.

Eventually its entire fleet of submarines were nuclear powered, with about 200 nuclear submarines built.

For decades this was all done under the watchful eye of Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, father of the nuclear navy.

I don’t mention Rickover l i g h t l y. U n t i l t h e e a r l y

1980s, he personally interviewed every officer who had anything to do with nuclear reactors (which meant, basically every officer to serve on submarines), and instilled a culture of perfection that still likely permeates to this day. The U.S. Navy’s nuclear safety record is effectively perfect.

No sub or ship has been lost due to failure of its nuclear power plant.

The U.S. Navy also went heavy into nuclear reactors for its surface ships, to a point. It quickly realized that nuclear reactors were not practical for anything smaller than an aircraft carrier. They built nine cruisers with nuclear power plants, and that was that.

As for the carriers, the first was the USS Enterprise.

It was built with a whopping eight nuclear reactors, each one essentially replacing a conventional boiler from previous oil-fueled carrier designs. They only built one of her, before going with a two-reactor plan for the Nimitz and Ford classes.

Why is all of this significant to Saskatchewan?

First, we know that small

nuclear reactors are possible, functional, and repeatable. They have been at sea, in conditions where there is no backup, and no alternative, for 65 years.

But we also know that those entrusted with their operation, at least for the first three decades, did so in a culture that allowed zero mistakes, basically ever. You cannot talk about small nuclear power and not talk about Rickover’s overwhelming influence.

This could be achieved in a military environment, where a highly structured and disciplined culture can enforce this sort of culture. It was also a situation where the very lives of those who ran the reactors depended upon their safe operation every second they were on board.

They didn’t go home at the end of the day.

Can we expect the same

of civilians working for a Crown corporation? Perhaps so. Obviously large-scale nuclear power has been operated by civilians since the mid-1950s as well.

Then there are the endof-life issues. What do you do with these small nuclear reactors when they are done?

If you are the U.S. Navy, you dig a mammoth hole and bury them. Literally.

Smack dab in the middle of Washington State, on the shores of the Columbia R i v e r, i s t h e v e r y a r i d Hanford nuclear site. This is where the U.S. basically learned how to build nuclear reactors, and used them to create the material for tens of thousands of nuclear warheads. Its decommissioning is a decades-long process, and the immediate area will likely never be used for anything again, ever.

In the middle of this site, never to be used again, is Trench 94. You can find it by plopping this into Google: 46.5656006,-119.5201509.

There you will see 128 giant cylinders, painted white.

There’s a reason you don’t see many nuclear submarines as museum ships.

When they retire a nuclear submarine, they chop it up into three sections, the forward, the reactor, and the aft. The defueled reactor is then loaded on a barge, shipped up the Columbia river, and transported to Trench 94. Sealed up for eternity, there it will eventually be buried as low-level waste.

All this is a lot better than what the Russians used to do, which was simply dump them somewhere in the Arctic Ocean. Now they are apparently following a strategy similar to Hanford.

If Saskatchewan is to begin using small nuclear reactors, we need to have a plan for their eventual disposal, up front. Does that mean putting them in a big hole somewhere? There are lots of holes left over from

coal mining near Estevan, but unlike very dry Hanford, these tend to fill up with water. Water that would rust steel reactor sections.

So what are our other options? Former uranium mines up north? Do we bury them somewhere else? And will they remain dry?

Submarines are also relatively small, tidy packages. The aircraft carriers are not. It took four years from keel laying to maiden voyage for the Enterprise.

It’s going to take 10 years to take the Enterprise fully apart beyond what has already been done. They’re not even starting until 2034, 22 years after it was decommissioned. That means its disposal might take a total of 32 years, and billions of dollars.

Wi l l s m a l l n u c l e a r reactors for power generation be anywhere near as complicated? Not likely.

I’m guessing they will be much closer to the submarine. Whatever it will be, we need to get these issues sorted out from the get-go, and not be wondering what we will do further down the road.

Throne speech offers little in the way of new ideas Sometimes, probably without consciously trying to do it, politicians can end up parroting the rather obvious.

Such was the case when the Saskatchewan government delivered its latest Throne Speech.

Not surprisingly the Speech, delivered by Lt.Gov. Russ Mirasty, talks a lot about building toward the future.

It goes down the path of building for two rather obvious reasons.

The first being that we are only two months away from the start of a new decade and that is always a rather fitting time to establish some benchmarks and

goals for the years ahead.

The reality of politics is, of course, with a provincial election set for 2020 this is this edition of the government’s last Throne Speech before going to the polls, and so using the Speech to begin laying out its platform for re-election only makes sense.

The Speech naturally suggests the 2020s will be a decade of growth for the province.

Again not a startling position since no government is going to suggest decline is coming when they are in charge.

And, in the case of population the recent trend has been one of growth, and it is

hoped that continues.

Right now that might be questioned by some as job layoff notices across a range of industries; potash, electricians and others are all too common. However, a plan for growth over a decade is one that has to look beyond the periodic ups and downs of an economy. For example, the potash sector has faced layoffs in the past,

and then rebounded as the demand for the commodity bounces back.

So the government, through the Speech, is promising to unveil a plan for Saskatchewan to achieve a population of 1.4 million and 100,000 more jobs by 2030. There is no doubt the suggested growth itself will create economic activity, the new residents requiring

homes, clothing, food, and cars, so if achieved it is a definite positive.

The Speech also talks in the broadest terms about growth in agriculture.

“Increasing crop production and growing the percentage of primary agricultural production that is processed in our province will be part of our plan moving forward,” said the Speech. “Growth in the value of exports requires more value-added production. To ensure our province reaps the full benefit of our agricultural resources, my government will outline measures to increase agricultural value-added exports to $10 billion by 2030.”

Realistically there has never been a time when the farm sector has not looked to grow production. That is the essence of a business plan for most producers, grow more bushels on the same number of acres to improve the bottom line.

Value-added is a different thing. The idea of increasing that side of agriculture expends back decades now and the countryside is littered with failed hog barns, flax straw processors, dead alfalfa dehydrators, failed pea chip plants and more.

That side of the government’s plan will be far more interesting to view, but the core idea of value-added is far from new.

Western Canadian Wheat Growers message inconsistent As usual, comments from the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association (WCWGA) were all over the map recently.

Stephen Vandervalk, WCWGA vice-president, attacked the government for providing compensation to dairy farmers for damages to their marketing board inflicted b y O t t a w a . M e a n w h i l e , J e ff Nielsen, former WCWGA executive, was asking for the government to be a willing partner to grain farmers. So their message is,

“government bad, except when it is good for just us.”

Do they not see the contradiction?

The only expertise the WCWGA has to offer about supply management is they don’t like it. Why are they targeting one farm group versus others? Dairy guys probably grow wheat too!

The WCWGA’s main purpose was to kill the Crow Rate and the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB).

Those have been accomplished

and their friends in the big grain companies have decided that prairie farmers will only get $5.30/bu for #1CWRS with 13.5 per cent protein for export and feed wheat brings $5.50 per bushel domestically. The WCWGA should be happy!

Many farmers are still trying to get the federal government to fairly distribute farmers’ money taken when the CWB was transferred to the Government of Saudi Arabia and Bunge. That case is working

its way through the courts. The WCWGA certainly never supported this action. Farmers are losing billions of dollars to the middlemen in the grain trade since the loss of the CWB and the WCWGA is as quiet as a church mouse!

With a basis on wheat contracts of as much as $45, where is the price transparency?

It’s also ironic when the federal government gives money to the Canola Council of Canada, which royally offended the Chinese on

dockage over three years ago and lost that customer, there was never any outcry from the WCWGA. They even shamelessly took “contracts” from the Harper government to push their agenda and fund their so-called association.

The WCWGA message is inconsistent because it is not a farmer message but rather a message the prairie grain trade puts out through their mouths!

Managing winter feeding with alternative feed sources

By Murray Feist, M.Sc., P.Ag., Provincial Livestock Specialist, Livestock Branch; and Jenifer Heyden, M.Sc., P.Ag., Livestock & Feed Extension Specialist, Regional Services Branch Back-to-back years of cool springs and dry summers have reduced feed stockpiles and increased pressure on pasture and hay land. The resulting adverse growing conditions drive up the cost of forage and force producers to look at alternative feed and management options for winter, including screenings, salvage crops and use of lowerquality forages such as straw.

Winter rations will utilize a variety of alternative feed sources. High forage prices and reduced supply will force the use of cereal grains, screenings and other by-products such as canola meal and dried distiller grains to boost protein and energy levels. Increasing the protein provides an enriched opportunity for rumen bacteria to be more efficient in breaking down and degrading forage fibre.

Salvage cereal, legume or oilseed crops

may be used where available; later-seeded cereals can be used for grazing (standing corn) or swath grazing in the fall and winter.

Producers should be aware that if they graze canola (either as salvage crop or regrowth) or feed a canola or dried distiller grain byproduct (and/or kochia bales), the sulfur content of the feed can be high and should be tested.

When considering the use of straw, either for stubble grazing or baled for feed, rations must be supplemented with protein and energy from other forages or grains and fortified with minerals and vitamin supplements.

Producers should be vigilant, as rations designed around using straw as a base forage should include a supplemental source of Vitamin A to prevent deficiencies.

Bear in mind that by-products such as cereal or pulse screenings, used as supplemental feed for energy or partial forage replacement for ruminants, come in varying degrees of purity and fibre content, along with some concerns for weed seed level and fusarium or ergot contamination. Screenings and stockpiled products should be examined and tested

Mineral and vitamin supplementation cannot be overlooked. In dry years, a mineral or vitamin deficiency will manifest much more quickly and visibly than in years with more adequate moisture, forage and grazing conditions. It is more important than ever to provide adequate mineral and vitamin

supplements to young females (replacements or first-time mothers) or when livestock are consuming poor-quality feeds during the high-production periods of late trimester and lactation, growth during backgrounding and finishing, and flushing for breeding.

You have to be a bit more creative to manage your feeding programs when faced with a dry pasture, grazing and haying seasons, and continually explore new options. Protein and energy supplementation will be essential if feed stocks are low or if you are utilizing poor-quality forages as the base of your winter rations. Be aware of mineral content in salvage crops to prevent issues with sulphate toxicity and/or mineral deficiencies.

Kerrie Wilcox, Birds Canada, Canadian Leader for Project FeederWatch said: “Over its long lifetime, the survey has shown the increasing good fortunes of birds such as Cooper’s hawks. This was also reflected in the recent State of Canada’s Birds 2019 report that showed birds of prey such as Cooper’s hawks have benefitted from action taken to improve their outcome.”

Birds of prey populations in Canada have increased 110 per cent since the 1970s largely because the pesticide DDT was banned. Cooper’s hawks have gravitated to backyards possibly because they have learned that bird feeders create large groupings of prey.

shrubs and fruit bearing trees.

On the other hand, FeederWatch has identified some species of concern, including an alarming decline in evening grosbeaks, a species which has experienced a range contraction and population decrease in North America. Loss of nesting habitat and food sources may be affecting evening grosbeaks but it is still difficult to say for sure what is causing the decline.

“To have thousands of people across the country spend 15 minutes every few weeks looking at their feeders not only helps us answer questions and create a picture of how our resident winter feeder birds are doing, but it’s also a lot of fun!” says Wilcox.

Sturgis resident has good memories of military service Being paratrooper was the best time of his life and he would not have changed anything about his time that he served in the Army, stated Master Corporal (retired) Dave Whynot.

Dave Whynot grew-up in Halifax, Nova Scotia and retired to Sturgis. He enlisted in the Canadian Infantry in 1989. He left for CFB Cornwallis, D i g b y, N S b a s i c t r a i n ing shortly after his high school graduation.

MCpl Whynot was sent to CFB Petawawa, Ont. to the Royal Canadian Regiment Battle School where he was taught the basic soldiering skills expected of a Canadian soldier. Upon graduation from Battle School he was posted to the 2 nd Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment.

Upon arrival at Battalion MCpl Whynot would be taught the skills of a mechanized soldier. At that time, they used MII3 armored personnel carriers.

S h o r t l y a f t e r h i s a rrival at Battalion

(approximately 8 months) MCpl Whynot was deployed to Chateauguay, Que just outside of Montreal to enforce martial law and to conduct patrols and checkpoints in the area of Kahnawake and Tekakwitha Island during the Oka Crisis in Quebec, also known as the Mohawk Resistance, which was a 78-day standoff (July 11 to September 26, 1990) between Mohawk protesters, police, and army. At the heart of the crisis was the proposed expansion of a golf course and development of condominiums on disputed land that included a Mohawk burial group.

Soon after his return from his Oka deployment MCpl Whynot had requested several times to be placed on the Basic Parachutist Course. His persistence landed him in Edmonton for three weeks at the Canadian Airborne Parachute Center. There he completed six jumps with 130 pounds of equipment to receive his Basic

That following summer MCpl Whynot was posted to CFB Petawawa with 3 Airborne Commando, Canadian Airborne Regiment and never looked back. “I had always wanted to be a paratrooper growing up and I had always wanted to be part of an elite group of soldiers and be posted to 3 Airborne Commando, Canadian Airborne Regiment “ said Whynot. “I have travelled the world and enjoyed the camaraderie, the great times we had, the tough times we endured and those times in which you d o n ’t c o m e h o m e w i t h those whom you had departed with. Every soldier has a special bond with those for whom they have served with and that special relationship will last until each other ’s dying breath.�

He moved to Sturgis at a point in his life where he needed to relax and do what he enjoys and that is being outside hunting and fishing.

Whynot has received numerous medals and awards throughout his career which includes his German, American Army, Italian and British Parachute jump wings, Medals include: Somalia Mission, Bosnia ( f o r m e r Yu g o s l a v i a ) , UN Peacekeeping and a Canadian Forces Decoration for 12 years of service to the Country of Canada.

As a paratrooper he received many injuries as both of his legs were broken, and also separated his shoulders.

Upon his retirement in 2001, he furthered his education and attained his Advanced Care Paramedic status with spending 12 years before his retirement from that position in 2013.

He attained a job with CN rail as a freight train conductor but was laid off and then jumped on a job with Universal Rail.

Remembering Marvin Nels Sando and his ultimate sacrifice The family of Private Marvin Nels Sando assisted in researching and compiling information for a Sando tribute of Marvin’s life. Copies of the informational booklet are kept at the Preeceville and District Heritage and Sturgis Station House Museums.

The booklet depicts Sando’s life from childhood, when he enlisted and served, along with fond family memories of him.

Marvin Sando immigrated to Canada with his sister Evelyn and parents Martin and Emma in 1921 from Grafton, North Dakota.

They purchased one quarter section of land in the Sturgis area where they settled. Sando attended Waler School for eight years and in July 1985 a special cairn was erected in his honour.

Sando was a private in the Canadian Armed Forces when he was killed in action on September 16, 1944 at the age of 28 years in Bray Dunes Plage, France. He was buried at Coxyde Military Cemetery

He joined the South Saskatchewan Regiment R.C.I.C in the army Infantry 2nd Canadian Division 6th Infantry Brigade in January 13, 1943.

He completed basic training with the unit of the 3rd Brigade Edmonton Fusiliers from January 22, 1943 to June 11, 1943 at Prince George B.C. He was

trained in rifle company and took buffalo training at Wainwright, Alta. The unit disbanded and was taken on strength with Oxford Rifles. Sando was appointed to rank of Lance Corporal, platoon section leader. He completed Mountain Warfare at Field training at Terrace, B.C. and continued on to general service in Nanaimo and for

active enlistment and then he was assigned a new service to a Transit Camp and relinquished the rank of L/Cpl. He was taken to Canadian Basic Training Camp and shipped overseas on August 11, 1944 where he continued basic training in England until August 29.

He embarked to France and arrived on August 30 and was taken on Strength with 2nd Canadian Battalion and then taken on Strength with the South Saskatchewan Regiment on September 1, 1944 at Rouen France. He was killed in action at Bray Dunes Plage, France on September 16, 1944.

The Sando family received word from the National Defence on October 1, 1944 by telegraph informing them that their son Private Marvin Sando was officially reported killed in action.

Sacrifice and Legacy: Two amputees share a special bond Sean Borle, 24, recalls meeting Second World War veteran Lloyd Brown, 96, for the first time six years ago at a Remembrance Day ceremony. “We had this magical moment where I reached out my right hand and he put out his left, to shake hands,” he says.

Borle was born missing his left hand, and Brown lost his right arm on October 18, 1944 while serving with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment in Italy. “I was staked at a farmhouse which had a children’s treehouse located behind it,” says Brown. “In the treehouse was a sniper who kept shooting at our boys. A tank then came which shot out shells, the shrapnel hitting my right arm.”

When Brown arrived at the hospital, the doctors had to amputate his arm.

“Fortunately, I was in such shock that I didn’t feel a thing,” he recalls.

The ability to find the positive in a dark situation is one reason why Borle admires Brown. On Remembrance Day, the pair share a special tradition of laying a wreath on behalf of The War Amps, an organization entering its second century of service this year.

The War Amps was started by war amputee veterans returning from the First World War to help each other adapt to their new reality as amputees. They then welcomed amputee veterans following the Second World War, sharing all that they had learned.

Borle grew up in The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, which provides financial assistance

for the cost of artificial limbs, emotional support and regional seminars to young amputees across Canada. It was started by War Amps Members, like Brown, who realized their experiences of living with amputation could help others.

Through what they call “Operation Legacy,” Borle and his fellow members of CHAMP have now “taken up the torch” of remembrance to pay tribute to the veteran members of The War Amps, whose efforts have made a difference in the lives of thousands of amputees.

“I can’t overstate the impact that these programs have on young amputees and their futures,” said Borle. “Knowing that there are people like Lloyd who

understand what it’s like to be missing a limb, makes you feel like you’re not alone.”

When Brown attends the Remembrance Day ceremonies, he reflects on all those in his regiment who never came home. “It’s heartbreaking to think of all those who lost their lives and it’s important to remember them,” he says.

For Borle, it’s special to share Remembrance Day with Brown. “I would not be the person I am today had it not been for that decision more than 100 years ago to begin The War Amps,” says Borle. “It is our commitment as Champs that the legacy and sacrifices of Lloyd, and all the war amputee veterans, will be remembered and carried forward.”

ROSAASEN: Howard Alton Rosaasen, born on January 29, 1936 in Preeceville, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2019 at 12:36 a.m. at 83 years. He was surrounded by family as he slipped into eternity to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Howard suffered a massive stroke in April 2009. Life would be forever altered that day, but Howard persevered and built a new life and language with Audrey, they enjoyed 10 more wonderful years together. Howard is predeceased by his parents, Henry and Amanda; brothers, Harold (Grace), Spencer (Yolanda), Hilding (Verna), Lloyd (Hazel), Munro, Borden; sisters and brothers-in-law, Alice Holmes (Knut), Beatrice Hermanson (Alfred), Laurel Steiestol (Odd); daughter-in-law, Denise Rosaasen; niece, Eunice Koutny; nephews, Alvin Rosaasen and baby Randall Rosaasen. Howard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Audrey Rosaasen; sons, Arlen and Clayton (Tina Rosaasen); daughter, Charissa; grandchildren, Trevor, Ashley and Arajá; 2 great-grandchildren, Lyric and Hubert; sister-in-law, Eleanor Rosaasen (Borden); as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was a longtime board member of the Preeceville Evangel Tabernacle and a founding board member of the Living Faith Bible School in Caroline AB, as well as an instrumental voice in the beginning of what now is known as the Mackenzie Society in Preeceville, Saskatchewan. Funeral and celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. at Elim Tabernacle, 419 Slimmon Road, Saskatoon, SK. Interment will take place on Monday, November 4, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Preeceville Cemetery, Preeceville, SK. How to clean carrots “an easier way”

By Kaare Askildt Marion grew a great garden this year, and the other day she dug all the carrots.

She spent about a day cleaning the larger specimens, but those that were long and very skinny got shifted aside for another day.

When Marion went to babysit Casey, I tried brushing a few of them, but found that I was scrubbing the skin off my fingers more than cleaning the carrots.

I thought that there must be an easier way. We don’t have a dishwasher, but the washing machine came to my mind, so I decided to give it a try. I grabbed all the thin carrots and put them in the washing machine. I also tore up about half a roll of paper towels and wrapped the sheets around the carrot bunches, to dampen the banging noise from the carrots MOBILE/MANUFACTURED HOMES FOR SALE

hitting the side of the wash drum, and I added a bit of liquid detergent for good measure.

The carrots and paper towels barely covered the bottom, but I chose the medium water level to give the carrots a lot of water to bounce around in. The washing machine has an agitator in the middle, and the perforated metal drum is rotating opposite of the agitator. The washer and dryer are in our newly renovated en-suite bathroom off our main floor bedroom. The walk-in shower is at the opposite wall to the washer and dryer, and the sliding pocket door to the bathroom is located by the shower. I was sitting at my workstation on the main floor just outside our bedroom working on my next story, and I could hear the loading of the water stop, followed by the agitator kicking in.

it should, or so I thought.

The banging noise from the washer got louder and louder, which attracted the dogs, who investigated where this new noise was coming from. The pocket door was open for me to audibly monitor the carrot cleaning progress. The washing machine was now in the spin cycle, you know the cycle where all the excess water is forced out of the drum and into the drain hose. It wasn’t until the dogs came out of the bedroom that I realized something wasn’t as it should be.

Their paws were wet and had soap suds all over them.

As soon as I stepped into the bedroom heading for the en-suite, I saw the problem. There was sudsy water all over the bathroom floor, running into the floor heat duct and overflowing into our bedroom. I waded through the water and shut the washing machine off.

I opened the lid and found some clean carrot bits but

most of it was mashed carrots looking like baby food.

The paper towels had gotten soaked by the soap and water and some it had been forced through the small holes in the drum, only to be mixed with the carrot mash as pulp blocking the access to the drain hose which was then forced off the pipe, causing the sudsy water to drain out on the floor.

I removed the carrot and paper towel mess and cleaned the floor the best I could with mop and bucket.

Marion was neither impressed nor amused, and hinted about setting up a bed in the shed. I surmised that the shed bed would not be for her, but for me. We were facing the possibility of having to buy a new washing machine, but then Marion inspected the damage, and being the savvy do-it-yourself person that she is, she pulled the washer away from the wall, opened it up and removed the

blocking pulp, reattached the drain hose and tightened the hose clamp. What a gal!

The next root veggie to be dug were the beets, and I promised not to try out any more helpful ideas without running them by her first.

Sven had grown what he thought was a prizewinning pumpkin, and he wanted to show it to the newspaper. He called the local press who invited him to bring the pumpkin to their office. He proudly walked in with his pumpkin, and when the news staff saw the size, they all started to laugh. Dismayed, he left their office and went to the local TV station. The same thing happened, as soon as they saw the pumpkin they started to laugh. He didn’t like to be laughed at, so he left and went to see his good friend Ole. As soon as Ole saw the pumpkin, he also started to laugh. Sven left Ole’s place and went to see his parents. When he got to his parents’ house,

he left the pumpkin on the porch and went inside to have lunch. After lunch he brought the pumpkin in to show them. Both his mom and dad started to laugh, and Sven left rather depressed. He sat down on the bench by the bus stop with his pumpkin in his lap. An old lady sitting at the other end of the bench, looked at Sven and asked, “Why the long, sad face?”

“Well I thought I had a prize-winning pumpkin,” answered Sven, “but everybody I show it to starts to laugh.”

“There is an Internet cafe across the street,” said the old lady. “Why don’t you go in there and look up on the Internet as to what qualifies as a prize-winning pumpkin.”

Sven thanked her and headed across the street, only to be hit by a bus and die.

The moral of this story: look both ways before crossing a street.

Digital Health Week is November 11 to 17, and is an annual celebration and recognition of how digital health is transforming the delivery of care across Canada as more and more of our health care system becomes digital.

Launched in 2014, Digital Health Week is now a part of the ACCESS 2022 movement, which is bringing together Canadians, health care providers, government and industry to work towards a new day in health care, said a release from Canada Health Infoway.

A new website allows patients to see results of medical tests before returning to their doctor.

Saskatchewan residents are now able to search and view their own medical information online from the comfort of home through MySaskHealthRecord, the release said.

To take advantage of the service, which was unveiled

recently, residents need to be at least 18 years of age, have a Saskatchewan health card and valid photo identification from SGI. Registration can be completed using the eHealth website and once complete, a secure PIN will be mailed to the user.

“You go in [to see your doctor] and it’s proactive now. You’ve seen the results [of tests]. You go in there [and] whatever shock value, if there is any, has been eliminated,” Tyler Moss, a researcher and kidney patient, said about his appointments with a physician, in the release.

“You just go in and have a very detailed conversation and a proactive one, and you start moving forward with the treatment plan.”

This is a game changer, giving patients the information they need to play an active role in their health care.

The 1,200 people involved in the pilot for the website far surpassed the

anticipated demand for the service, Warren Kaeding, minister of rural and remote health, said in the release.

“More than 80 per cent of those involved in the original pilot program said their doctor’s appointments were more valuable because they had test results in advance,” Kaeding added.

Naomi Miller suffers from osteo-arthritis and a degenerative disc disease, which means she frequently needs access to her information and the health system in general.

“Being able to see my lab results from home saves time for both myself and my doctor since I can avoid some unnecessary doctor visits when the purpose of the visit was just to find out what the results were,” said Miller in the release.

If the results are concerning in some way, then she can then go ahead and book an appointment with her physician.

“This is a game changer,

giving patients the information they need to play an active role in their health care,” Kaeding said.

“Some provinces that offer similar programs have delays built in so that people have to wait to see their own personal health information, and some provinces only provide limited lab results or require people to have a family physician in order to sign up.”

Patients will be able to track data like blood pressure if they choose or set reminders for appointments.

Immunization history and prescription information will be added at a later date, Kaeding concluded.

Once registered on eHealth’s website, people can view their personal health information, lab test results, medical imaging reports and other options.

The website will also lend a helping hand by letting patients know whether their test results are in the normal range.

Saskatchewan’s population still growing More people are living in Saskatchewan than ever before, as the province’s population grew to 1,174,462 as of July 1, according to new figures released by Statistics Canada.

Saskatchewan’s population has now grown in 53 consecutive quarters, increasing by more than

183,000 people during that time, according to the release.

Jeremy Harrison, immigration and career training minister, said a growing province creates opportunities for Saskatchewan people and provides the resources needed to support important government services.

“As we get ready to enter the 2020s, our government is planning for another decade of strong growth in Saskatchewan,” said Harrison. “This fall, we will release a new growth plan for the new decade, with new growth targets and actions we will take to achieve those targets.”

Saskatchewan grew by 3,435 people in the second quarter of 2019. A net increase of 4,510 people from international migration and a natural increase (births minus deaths) of 1,644 people was partially offset by net interprovincial outmigration of 2,719 people, concluded the release.

•Block heater: check it with a block-heater tester before frigid conditions set in. Make sure you don’t have any cracks or tears in the cord. Always plug your vehicle in when the temperature falls below -15°C. • B atter y : th e b atter y is your vehicle’s lifeline.

Cold conditions can weaken it and cause it to fail.

Check it often and have it charged or changed if necessary.

•Battery Tender: when leaving your vehicle parked for an extended period, a

battery tender will keep it charged at the proper storage voltage.

•All-weather, three season and winter tires: three season (a.k.a. all-season) tires work well in spring, summer and fall. But allweather or winter tires are best for driving on snow and ice as the rubber designed for snowy and icy conditions will perform better than all-seasons. The deep tread design provides up to 50 per cent better traction on winter roads.

Rubber in all-seasons start to lose elasticity and harden at around 7°C, reducing its ability to grip the road.

•Tire pressure: when the thermometer goes down, so does your tire pressure.

Even though most vehicles have a Temperature Pressure Monitoring S y s t e m ( T P M S ) , i t ’s a good idea to check the tires at least monthly (don’t forget the spare) or more often during the colder temperatures.

If one is not sure if one’s vehicle is winterready, have it checked by a professional.

For drivers: •Check weather and road conditions. If conditions are poor, stay off the roads and make alternate plans.

•Plan your route in

advance. Allow extra time for travel and let others know your rotes and ETA. •Snow and ice can triple your stopping distance.

Leave more-than-normal space between your vehicle and the one ahead of you and use turn signals well in advance to alert drivers behind.

•Focus on smooth braking and steering in slippery conditions. If you jerk the wheel or slam the brakes, your tire treads could lose traction with the road and start sliding.

When you encounter a snow plow on the highway, your visibility may be limited. Slow down and drive with caution. Legislation requires that motorists

•Carry a fully charged mobile phone and portable phone battery charger. This is a ‘must have’ for emergency use or if you need to call for roadside assistance.

A properly charged phone could be your lifeline in an emergency.

•Pack a roadside assistance kit, ncluding a

flashlight, battery booster cables, shovel, snow brush and ice scraper.

•Drive with caution in school zones and residential areas. Pedestrians will need extra time to cross streets due to snow and ice which also means you will need extra time to stop safely.

If one does become stranded, here are some rules to follow: •Don’t panic. Keep calm.

•Stay with your vehicle.

It will make it easier for rescuers or tow operators to find you. Know where you are so you can identify your location.

•The fully charged mobile phone you have with you, will come in handy to call for help.

•Make an SOS. Place a bright scarf or blanket in a rolled-up window to signal distress.

•Don’t overexert yourself. Pushing or digging out will just make you cold and tired.

•Stay warm. Run the engine just long enough to remove the chill, then turn it off to conserve fuel.

Clear snow and ice from the exhaust pipe to prevent carbon monoxide leaking into the vehicle.

Preeceville Panthers conclude football season at provincial play The Preeceville Panthers football team ended its season with falling short by a 16 to 0 score during the quarter-finals in the provincial run in Raymore on October 26.

“The Panthers team traveled to Raymore for a quarter-final matchup but was faced with horrible weather conditions.

Our players were going up against a team which won its conference with no recorded losses,” said Jeremy Mattison, coach.

“We got possession of the ball in the first and it was a very back-and forth game.

The first quarter ended with nobody scoring. The second quarter saw us turning over the ball on downs and Ryan Young getting injured. There was a delay of game and

Raymore came back with scoring a 71-yard touchdow n that s et our boys back a little. In the fourth quarter Raymore scored again, resulting in the 16 to 0 final score,” he said.

“The boys left it all on field and the coaching staff is very proud of the 11 players who worked tirelessly on and off the field.”

Mattison said the team had a great overall season.

“It was a tough loss but we had a blast with all of our players being very talented in being able to play any position on the field. We are losing three players to graduation, James Lagrove, Ryan Young and Willen Paligan but we have a good core of guys coming back to play next season,” concluded Mattison.
