Local veterinarian acknowledged for his 50 years of service Richard Krauss of Preeceville was recently acknowledged for his hard work, dedication and passion as a veterinarian for 50 years.

He was presented the Western Canada Association of Bovine Practitioners (WCABP) - Honorary Life Membership for Outstanding Contribution in March 2019 and previously acknowledged with The Saskatchewan Veterinary Medicine Association (SVMA) - J. J. Murison Distinguished Veterinarian Aw a r d i n N o v e m b e r o f 2018.

“I am very honoured to be honoured with both these awards,” stated Dr. Krauss.

The J.J. Murison Distinguished Veterinarian award is the highest level of recognition the SVMA

can bestow on a member and is presented annually, stated the SVMA newsletter.

The criteria for selection include: service to the SVMA, the profession and the public as well as competency, personality and character.

This year ’s J.J. Murison Distinguished Veterinarian award was presented to Dr. Krauss in recognition of his outstanding service and dedication to his clients and patients, stated nominator Dr Clarence Bischop, rabies risk assessment veterinarian with Saskatchewan Agriculture.

“I’ve had the opportunity to speak with many of his clients, and I can tell you they were consistently effusive in their descriptions of Dr Krauss’ tireless work ethic, his veterinary skills and his obvious care

Life Membership can be awarded to someone over 65 who has made an outstanding contribution to either the association or the

veterinary profession. To nominate a potential recipient, members must forward a letter that outlines the nominee’s achievements and why the person is worthy of an Honorary Life membership.

Dr. Krauss was presented the Honorary Lifetime membership by his nominator Dr. Carmen Millham, Outlook Veterinary. The plaque acknowledged Krauss’ many years and long standing commitment to veterinary practice in Western Canada.

Krauss was a graduate member of the first class of vet students that were educated at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) at the University of Saskatchewan in 1969.

“I think I speak for many farm producers and

pet owners when I say that we are all very proud of Dr. Krauss and grateful for his unending dedication to all creatures great and small.

His service and support over the years will always be appreciated together with his kind nature and humorous personality,” stated Donna Parkin of Preeceville.

The family farmed in Parry, south of Regina and he attended high school in Parry. He went on to work at a veterinary clinic in Burnaby B.C. with Dr. John Maclain for five months and at the Weyburn veterinary clinic under the mentorship of Dr. Wally Nicholson for one year before moving to Preeceville to open his own clinic, The Preeceville Veterinary Clinic on July 15, 1970.

Krauss and his wife Ivy of 50 years have enjoyed being part of the community and raising the couple’s two children in a small community environment.

“I saw the opportunity to set out on my own when Preeceville and area did not have a veterinary,” said Krauss. “I have a strong passion for all animals and would never turn away any animal. There have been many challenges and changes in the veterinary

Over the past years we have had 25 veterinary students at the clinic and I am very proud to say that all are now located all over as successful veterinarians,” he said.

“I am now 75 years old

and have dedicated my live to helping care for all animals but the time has come for me to retire and step away. I have been trying to seek a replacement but it is very difficult and the clinic has been for sale for the past four years. The clinic

has changed throughout the years and can accommodate small and large animals, laboratory testing and x-rays. I have enjoyed my many years in practice and attribute my success where other clinics have folded to my huge client bases,” he concluded.

RCMP highlight new legislation and police policies The Canora and Sturgis RCMP detachment invited the Sturgis community and surrounding area communities to a town-wide meeting held at the Sturgis Community Hall on May 16.

Members of the detachment who were in attendance discussing a variety of topics were: Corporal Dallyn Holmstrom, Constable Kari Pettinger and Constable Adam Huber.

Topics covered featured: new legislation and policies for drinking, cannabis and the Saskatchewan Crime Watch.

Holmstrom gave an overview on the detachment boundaries which extend to north of Usherville including the Porcupine Plain Forest; south of Ebenezer; east of Mikado and west of Invermay.

“We cover a large area, which can sometimes be frustrating for residents but we make every effort to be at all service calls as quickly as possible,” said Holmstrom. “From January 2018 to January 2019 we received 2,500 calls; 1,300 service calls were received just from January 2019 to the present. We usually see

The RCMP members work as school liaisons,

working with schools on safe lock down and hold and secure procedures through

mock scenarios. They also work with schools on issues dealing with bullying, cyber bullying and impaired driving through social media awareness.

Holmstrom covered topics relating to community policing and the frustrations of government cutbacks. He commented on Mark Fisher’s role as a Commission Commanding Officer of the F Division.

Other topics featured focused on road safety, crime prevention, protecting your property guidelines, fraud prevention, Saskatchewan Cannabis Control Act and

the new impaired driving laws.

Holmstrom spoke briefly about the Saskatchewan C r i m e Wa t c h A d v i s o r y program and encouraged individuals to sign up to help contribute to community safety “which is most effective if everyone works together to help prevent crime.”

At the conclusion of the meeting the members of the detachment fielded a few questions from the public that included road safety, the utilizing of conservation officers and some fraud questions.

Whitehawk Arts Council announce 2019 concert series The Whitehawk Arts Council has announced its set of three concerts for the Stars of Saskatchewan series for the 2019-2020 season.

The first concert scheduled will feature Over the Moon in Preeceville on October 24. The acoustic roots and country act consists

of a husband and wife team of award winning musicians and vocalists. Their music focuses on acoustic instrumentals and the blending of vocals. Their songs are written about the sometimes hard and unforgiving land but their music focuses on funny stories of being a husband

and wife team of musicians living on a 10,000-acre ranch in Alberta., stated the band’s website.

The next concert will feature The Johnny McCuaig Band in Sturgis on November 27. The Johnny McCuaig Band is a fivepiece Canadian rock band

that draws on Canada’s rich, cultural mosaic to create a super fun blend of hard rock, pop, new wave, folk, and blues combined with bagpipes. The band exemplifies the honest, hard-working, and proud (yet humble) spirit of Canada. Live, their brand of melodic ear candy

becomes a feast for the senses. Bagpipes, a kilt, crunching guitars, a hip-shaking rhythm section, and boundless energy makes for one hell of a show, stated the band’s website.

Since the band’s inception in 2003 the group has solidified its reputation. With more than 400 concerts in various venues and festivals, including numerous appearances in major events and tours across Canada and France, the members have cultivated the adoration and loyalty of an ever growing fan base. Fundraiser Crop in the ground for another year The Preeceville Recreation board once again arranged for a field west of Preeceville to be used as fundraiser crop.

The 70 acres was seeded to wheat, with the funds from the harvest going towards the bike and skate park committee. Last year the land was seeded into canola for the fundraiser crop for the Arena.

The wheat seeded was a surplus that the Arena had left over from a previous year. “Thank you goes out to Hoterra Farms for supplying the land and Pattison Ag for supplying

equipment and manpower which consisted of Wes Jaeb, Tim Olson, Evan Steppan, Jason Anaka and Conrad Peterson,” said Andrea Tonn, recreation director, Town of Preeceville. “Nutrien Ag Solutions helped with the fertilizer needs and the Town of Preeceville shop employees also pitched in.

There were many others who helped behind the scene.

“We are hoping for this to be a successful fundraiser to help us get closer to our fundraising goals for the bike and skate park,” concluded Tonn.

Seeding progressing well after slow start Seeding is just over half completed for the majority of farmers in the Canora/Kamsack/Norquay/ Preeceville region, said Liam O’Halloran of Prairie Soils on Thursday. He said this is about average for the middle of May. Approximately 90 to 95 per cent of peas and wheat

are in the ground, while most producers just started putting in canola a few days ago, said O’Halloran.

After cool weather kept soil temperatures unusually low in early May, the recent warm up has those temperatures up to around 8 to 9C, which is much better for plant establishment, he said.

The rain total on Wednesday was about three tenths of an inch across most of the region. It came at just the right time, since soil conditions were getting to be quite dry.

Most farmers had to shut down seeding operations for a day or so, before things dried enough to get back out

in the field.

O’Halloran said some wheat crops seeded in early May have started to emerge, and things are looking good for the most part.

He said farmers should be scouting their fields as much as possible to check on emergence and to see how much weed pressure is present, and

if there are any pest problems to keep an eye on.

Canola crops should begin to emerge soon, and scouting will be important for flea beetles, in addition to other pest and weeds.

Most farmers hope the weather warms up in the next week or two in order to help crop development, along with

timely rains as needed.

O’Halloran said seeding has been completed at the Prairie Soils Field of Dreams site with a new canola planter. He said farmers have shown considerable interest in this machine, which has an improved level of precision for seed spacing, compared to conventional air drills.

Dry conditions in area concern for farmers A routine trip to a field south of Kamsack to do some spring baling ended in a near tragedy on May 9 for a local farmer.

A baler owned by Paul and June Chernoff caught fire in the field around three miles south of Kamsack, and was engulfed in flames. “It was lucky the fire was contained

and didn’t spread, and no one was injured in the incident,” Paul said.

“The individual who was operating the tractor at the time noticed smoke coming from the baler at one point when it was time to eject a bale, and reacted quickly by pulling the pin and driving the tractor away just in time

before flames shot out and the baler was a flaming ball.

“The Kamsack Fire Department attended the scene and was able to keep the blaze from spreading too far.”

The baler had been thoroughly inspected and fully serviced prior to being sent

out in the field, Paul said.

Unfortunately, the John Deere 567 round baler with net wrap is a total loss.

The Chernoff’s believe the fire was caused when the baler picked up a foreign object, most likely a rock, which jammed the pick-up and caused heat build-up and

the resultant fire.

“The conditions in the area are very dry right now,” Paul said. “ It doesn’t take much to spark a blaze under these conditions,” he stated, saying that this incident is a real “headsup” to other farmer’s in the

area right now doing field work, adding extra caution might be needed while working in such dry conditions.

The Chernoff’s are very grateful that no one was injured in the incident and that the fire was contained.

A Decade Ago

Rural Saskatchewan left out of good job news The Saskatchewan Party has just received some outstanding job news, the kind of news that it might very well ride to an election win in October 2020.

There is, however a bit of ironic, bad news contained within this very good news.

What is very good news for the Sask. Party government and province as a whole is not the best news for rural Saskatchewan that may still be bearing the brunt of our changing economy.

The very good news is that the month of April saw 14,200 more jobs, overall; 18,000 of which were full-time jobs. That we seem to have lost part-time jobs might normally be seen as bad news, but with the rise in full-time employment it likely means we are seeing some part-time jobs converted into full-time ones.

And that is just the beginning of the good job news in the Saskatchewan job numbers that we have seen of late.

April represented the ninth consecutive month where Saskatchewan has seen more jobs than the same month 12 months ago.

What this strongly suggests is that the Saskatchewan economy is recovering and is on a bit of a roll, which bodes well for a governing party headed to polls next year.

The economy is a bit like a train that takes awhile to get to top speed and awhile to slow down. Historically speaking, 14,200 new jobs in a month (including 18,000 full-time ones) is nearing top speed, so it’s rather unlikely

that it won’t slow down anytime soon.

It’s also noteworthy that the economy in April saw 12,100 jobs created by the private sector. There was also a healthy number of additional jobs in educational services, health care and social assistance where the Sask. Party government has been criticized for not doing enough.

Finally, there were 7,100 jobs created in Saskatoon and 2,800 jobs in Regina, where the Sask. Party is expected to struggle the most in the October 2020 general election.

But while this is all good news overall, the news is not as good for rural Saskatchewan.

Although jobs in agriculture were higher than a year ago, there were 2,200 fewer people working in the natural resources sector.

That’s bad news for rural Saskatchewan where virtually all of the energy jobs exist. This means good-paying jobs in the oil patch have not come back.

Instead, we are seeing 2,500 more jobs in the accommodation and food services industries that more often are minimum-wage level jobs.

But the real problem is that the bulk of the new jobs are being created in the two big cities, while the smaller cities, towns and farms generally continue to lose jobs.

This does not mean the Sask. Party has a political problem because it already has most of the 29 rural seats sewn up.

Except for the occasional seat where we see a retiring incumbent like Lyle Stewart or Dan D’Autremont, the Sask. Party already has a veteran MLA in place to seek re-election. And given that the bulk of those rural MLAs won with 65-per-cent-or-better of the popular vote, there is certainly no reason to suspect that Premier Scott Moe is going to lose many (or perhaps even any) rural caucus members to Ryan Meili’s NDP. But it is a bit of double-edged sword in that overwhelming success in the rural seats means there is less political incentive for the government to address rural problems, especially long-standing rural problems like jobs that everyone believes the government can’t do much about anyway.

As good as the overall job news is, it very much seems that the government does have to turn its attention to doing what ever it can to help rural Saskatchewan in this area.

Low impact gardening, as in, I don’t do much these days Today, at plus 24C, it seems like spring finally arrived. The green thumbs must be in their glory. A bit of rain last night, warm weather today, ah! What more could a person ask for?

In my case, someone else to do the yard work.

I’m sure my late grandparents would not be impressed, but several years ago I gave up on gardening.

Oh, we used to plant a garden. In North Battleford.

When we first bought a house in 2001, I was all over that like a fat kid on a Smartie. I even built a little chicken wire protector for my pathetic little strawberry patch.

But I think that buying several bags of sheep manure resulted in several years of a losing war with Portulaca.

It was like the war on terror.

There is no end. And there was none in the Portulaca war, either, until we sold the house.

Perhaps you could consider

that a surrender. I believe the current owners do not have a garden there anymore, so perhaps in the intervening years one of the owners of that place conquered the weed, or surrendered and laid sod.

We tried to have a garden in Estevan for a few years.

But when planting the garden resulted in one of the worst arguments of our soon-to-be 20-year marriage, I gave up and let it grown in as grass.

Thankfully, we are still married. Better to buy frozen vegetables than pay for a divorce lawyer.

These days, most of my efforts have been repeatedly asking our daughter to cut the grass. Eventually, she does.

Eventually.

Today I saw two of my former boss’ weed control trucks driving around Estevan.

He used to be my publisher, but a few years ago, he and his brother-in-law went into the weed control business,

principally in the oilpatch.

They bought out an established outfit, spending their summers going from lease to lease, spraying noxious weeds. You want to lose a lot of weight? Forget the keto diet. Buy a spraying business.

Last year I glommed onto the fact that they also do weed control in town on days when its too windy to go out in the field. So I hired them. And my lawn looked much better.

And today, I walked in the backyard, and the eastern half is no longer 50 per cent dandelions, as it had been for years. Indeed, I didn’t see one, despite seeing several

yards down the road covered in yellow. And thus, my lawn continues to look better, and I’m less likely to pollute my neighbours with yellow flowers. I phoned up said former boss to ensure I’m on the list for this year. It made a hell of a difference.

In previous years, I had spent many an hour on my hands and knees, using the old-fashioned dandelion fork.

Then I got a fancier one, and it worked marginally better, but still required getting low.

Then I got one of those stand up things that you step on and four claws would grab the root. You’d then tilt it

over, lift it up, and release the claws. However, after a while it didn’t release perfectly, and despite many hours of combing over the front grass, it never seemed to be making much of a difference.

I tried spraying, but maybe my technique sucks. Or maybe I wasn’t using enough.

I don’t know. Whatever I did, it did not work.

Thus, hiring the professionals has been a worthy investment. Indeed, I think it actually cost me less than what I was spending on chemicals doing it myself. It also saved me hours on my knees, or bending over in a futile battle I couldn’t win.

Another labour-saving concept hit me last year, too.

Ever since I was a kid, using my mom’s lawnmower to cut the neighbour’s grass, I bagged the clippings. And ever since we first bought a house, we bagged the clippings. In dry years, when you

cut the lawn once in all of August, no big deal. But when it’s been a wet year, oy.

Then this concept struck me; who has the nicest grass around? Golf course. And do they bag their clippings? Hell no. Maybe they do something on the greens. I don’t know.

But they sure don’t do the fairways. The leave all the clippings there, nicely mulched, where it turns into, get this, grass.

And so it seems that our mower, too, has a mulch function. Insert the mulch plug, and voila, no more bagging grass. Much easier on our daughter, much easier on me, and we actually have room in our garbage can. Even better, the grass seems to have improved, too.

In a nutshell, when it comes to yard work, my life has become much less stressful the less that I do. It only took me 18 years to figure it out.

Influence of government policy on farm commodity prices It appears agriculture could once again be headed to a time when government policy determines the market for commodities with little consideration given to supply and demand.

It was not that long ago Canadian producers were nearly crushed as this country fought for market share with the coffers of the United States and the European Union literally buying market share via subsidies to buyers, and dollars to their producers.

The world had seemed to evolve past such craziness with numerous free trade deals inked between countries, most notably in Canada the initial North American Free Trade Agreement.

The basic premise of free trade is simple at its heart; countries that excel at the production of an agricultural product should have access to markets without mounds of tariffs impeding such trade.

For a country such as Canada that is an important concept because producers here are good at production, and exporting product is essential.

But governments are again starting to muddy the waters

of such trade with policies that are purely political in nature.

In part, no doubt, the change is being fostered by a more protectionist attitude, which we see south of the 49th parallel under American President Donald Trump.

And of course there is the startling decision by the United Kingdom to leave the European Union, a decision that will have effects rippling well into the future regarding trade, including in agricultural products.

Canola prices declined for days in a row recently following a tweet from Trump. Trump tweeted he would hike tariffs on imports from China, accusing China of dragging

out trade negotiations. The tariffs were threatened as a way to speed up the trade talks, in other words impeding the usual movement in trade as a hammer to get what the American president wants.

Perhaps because of its importance, agricultural trade has always been an area that is dealt with differently than the trade in other commodities.

Take for example the European Union’s decision to exclude agriculture from current free trade talks with the United States. European Union members have given the European Commission the go-ahead to start free trade negotiations recently, but only on eliminating tariffs on industrial products.

There is significance in that tactic by the EU that reflects back to a European desire to control farm production after the starvation that occurred through two World Wars, and of course with farm products outside the framework of a larger agreement, there is still the ability to use it as a political chip.

Most things are cyclical and we can only hope for a return to an atmosphere of freer trade soon for the good of the farm sector.

Liberals caught again in SNCLavalin scandal On April 2, Jody WilsonRaybould and Jane Philpot were removed from the Liberal Caucus by the Prime Minister of Canada.

A scandal had been growing like cancer in the Liberal Party of Canada since January.

It was a growing drama with a new twist almost every day. Even the presentation of the budget after their firing failed to change the political focus. The media has spent much energy on the topic, but how thorough have they been? There have been many allegations, but there are still more questions than there are answers.

Despite the amount of time spent on the scandal, I wonder if there is not another story that needs telling before the affair can be given closure.

It is significant to know that Export Development Canada (EDC), the country’s export credit agency, was created in 1944 to promote Canadian business overseas. It has 12 offices across Canada and 19 regional offices around the world.

It is obvious to note that the central figure in this scandal is SNC-Lavalin, which has borrowed billions of dollars since the mid 1990’s (CBC.) SNCLavalin resulted from a m e r g e r o f S u r v e y o r, Nenniger, Chenevert and Lavalin, all based in Quebec in 1991, instantly becoming one of the five largest engineering/construction companies in the world.

They have been doing work in countries where bribery and corruption are common practice. They conform to the culture of the country and perform with their own unquestionable behavior. SNC-Lavalin has been working on a slippery and shady slope. Even when applying for loans, they allegedly insert contingencies to be used to bribe their way around hurdles.

Their worsening reputation worldwide was highlighted in 2011 and 2012 with high profile executives being arrested and jailed for work being done in Mexico, Switzerland and Libya.

Based on a corruption probe into SNC-Lavalin, the World Bank suspended a $1.2 billion loan that it had offered for a project in Bangladesh. In April, 2012 the World Bank suspended SNC- Lavalin from bidding on any other bank projects.

It would be interesting to see a complete list of their legal allegations.

There are also

consequences in Canada.

The Quebec government has offered its provincial pension plan as security to aid the operations of SNCLavalin. Sask Power has over $700 million in contracts with SNC-Lavalin, some of which have resulted in legal challenges.

SNC-Lavalin, as strong supporters of the Liberal Party of Canada, has also enjoyed easy access to the Liberal government of Justin Trudeau. A former clerk of the privy council was named as chairman of the board of directors of SNC-Lavalin in Dec., 2017 making access to Michael Wernick, the past clerk of the privy council very convenient. Was this former relationship a factor in Michael Wernick’s recent retirement?

So with SNC-Lavalin in mind, the government introduced the deferred prosecution agreement (DPA) in June, 2018. DPA’s can be negotiated between f ed er al p r o s ecu tin g at torneys and a corporation under the supervision of a judge. The purpose is to protect a corporation from consequences which might result from troubling allegations. Why do governments entertain slippery slope situations or worse yet, why do they create legislation to enable them?

Where was the news media when government legislation was being passed? The company began seeking a remediation agreement to avoid criminal proceedings related to charges linked to contracts in Libya.

It is necessary to note that in 2006, following the Sponsorship Scandal, Stephen Harper, as the newly elected Prime Minister, initiated on the passing of the Director of Public Prosecutions Act. It was meant to create an independent body to prevent criminal interference in political matters. It was this Conservative-created body which in September 2018 rejected the application by the troubled corporation.

How much background information did they have on SNC-Lavalin and what was the rational for their decision? Was that ever included in the news coverage in early 2019? The attorney general at the time, Jody Wilson-Raybould, accepted their decision to reject the application. However, the lobbying from the PMO and the undue pressure continued until the story broke in early January.

JWR faced three more months of harassment before being kicked out of the caucus. It is commonly accepted that the government was secretly supporting and promoting a DPA for SNC-Lavalin. As a matter of fact, according to JWR, Jerry Butts had told her that the Prime Minister didn’t like that legislation. She asserted that it was the law.

This of course has been denied by the prime minister. This is the price JWR paid for wanting to be honest and not being willing to join the “old boys club” of the Liberal party. After all, Trudeau had promised that things were going to be done differently, but somehow it resembles the Sponsorship Scandal of the Chretien-Martin era in the early 2000’s.

It was only in late March, that EDC announced it was going to begin investigating the many allegations that have been laid against SNCLavalin on an international scale. In addition to that and posted April 3 in a CBC article titled SNC-Lavalin insiders bribery allegations...

An insider has alleged that billions of taxpayer dollars have been loaned to SNC-Lavalin to use at their discretion which would include bribery in dealing with contracts. Is it possible that SNC-Lavalin have been manipulating our EDC at

our expense for years?

It was reported by the insider that prior to 2012 the EDC was supporting many SNC-Lavalin projects which were known to have slush funds to support bribes. So what is the real story? Is it about an attorney general doing her job in an honest manner or is the story much deeper and about powerful corporations and their influential control of government and their stripping of our taxpayer dollars? As the opposition parties are requesting, there are enough unanswered questions to justify a public inquiry or even an RCMP investigation. So far the Liberals with their majority have been able to keep the real story covered up.

There seems to be a break in the coverage, but there is so much more to come. It will be interesting to see when/if the new attorney general will attempt to activate the DPA. It’s a guarantee that if the Liberals stay in power they will trigger it but probably not until after they get re-elected. It would be political suicide to apply for a DPA before the election. They can’t afford to betray SNC-Lavalin and we can’t afford to let them!

Corruption has no place in our justice system. It is a lesson that the Liberals did not learn and so they are caught again!

Melville RCMP investigates report of Nazi and Confederate flags On May 9, Melville RCMP was made aware of Nazi and Confederate flags flying on an old television receiver tower attached to a residence in the community of Kelliher, according to a release.

An RCMP officer went to the residence the next day and spoke with the occupant of the home and then the owner of the home to make them both aware that the community had voiced concerns about these symbols being flown within the community. The home owner and the occupant were also told that it was not illegal to fly these flags and that the RCMP was not acting in an enforcement roll, but rather as a voice for the community, said the

release.

The owner of the residence had verbally agreed to removing the flags as soon as the rain had stopped as they stated it was dangerous to climb the tower when it was wet. RCMP officers were confident the matter was in the process of being resolved without further incident. Local representatives were notified of the results of those conversations.

O n M a y 11 , a v i d e o was posted to social media showing someone who claimed to have removed the flags and then set them on fire. The RCMP is investigating this latest development and will be meeting with the occupant of the home, concluded the release.

OBITUARIES

LOZINSKI, Gloria - Gloria Lozinski, beloved wife of the late Adolph Lozinski, passed away at the Norquay Health Centre on May 7, 2019, at the age of 84 years. Gloria was born on September 7, 1934 to Metro and Nita (Koroluk) Yaginski in the Hyas District, SK. She was united in marriage to Adolph Lozinski in October 1950. Together, Gloria and Adolph built a family and farm, until Adolph’s unexpected passing in the fall of 1982. It was then that Gloria held the reigns, taking over as the head of the homestead with grace. Gloria spent her life enjoying what her and Adolph began; raising several animals, working the fields and of course tending to her plentiful garden and extraordinary flower beds. A skilled baker and cook, Gloria would host hoards of family and friends packed inside her farm home with ease. This matriarch will be dearly missed but fondly remembered with each spring ahead. Gloria was predeceased by her parents, Metro and Nita Yaginski; cherished husband, Adolph Lozinski; sister, Lorraine Mirva; brother-in-law, Harry Sowa and nephew, Lonnie Sowa. Left to celebrate her memory are her companion and friend, Mike Kardynal; children: Cynthia (Randy) Batty, Dale (Arlene) Lozinski and Lyndon Lozinski (Elaine Dobson); grandchildren: Leigh (Chandelle) Batty, Kelly (Christelle) Batty, Nancy (Jeremy) Seidlitz, Britney (Randy) Ashton, Breanne (Landon) Beckie, Colby and Derek Lozinski; 11 great-grandchildren and her sister, Sonia Sowa; as well as many members of her close knit extended family. As a dedicated member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, a service in Gloria’s honour was held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 17, 2019, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Rev. Fr. Michael Faryna officiating. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. Volunteers needed to observe and report on loon populations FEED & SEED

The Canadian Lakes Loon Survey has been undertaken annually by volunteers coordinated by Bird Studies Canada since 1981.

Monitoring this iconic bird provides important information regarding the species as well as the environment, said a release.

Marlies and Dieter Schoenefeld joined Bird Studies Canada in 1986 because they value their experience on Canadian lakes and they are concerned for bird and environmental health.

“We wanted to be part of an important survey, paddle

our canoe, watch loons and have our observations included in research about bioindicators. What a pleasure that was. Paddle with a purpose,” they said.

“More volunteers are needed to survey these birds at lakes across Canada. This data will be vital to determine if loons are in decline, holding steady or making gains,” says Kathy Jones, Canadian Lakes Loon Survey volunteer co-ordinator, Bird Studies Canada.

No experience is needed to observe and report on the loon chicks at a nearby local

lake as a citizen scientist. The information collected will become part of the upcoming 40-year Loon Survey Report and is needed to give a true picture of the status of the common loon and the health of Canada’s lakes.

“If you will be at a lake in Canada at least one day in each of June, July and August please sign up for the Canadian Lakes Loon Survey,” stated the release.

“Bird Studies Canada will provide you with a kit and will help you get started.”

Spring tea at Club 60 in Preeceville “a fun afternoon” Children and adults enjoyed a special spring tea hosted by the members of the St. John Lutheran Church youth group in Preeceville at the Club 60 on May 5.

“Individuals in attendance were requested to wear their special spring dress up clothing,” said Kim Sandager, organizer.

The afternoon kicked off with a welcome by Reneye Scheller.

“We would like to welcome you on this not so spring-like day to our third annual spring tea,” said Scheller.

The idea for the spring tea orginated just over three years ago with a group of moms visiting. It was during this visit that one of the moms expressed how much her grandma enjoyed going to Regina for tea at the Hotel Saskatchewan.

“It was the moment that an idea took root,” stated Scheller.

“We decided to host our own tea here in Preeceville. The hope was that this tea would be a time for grandmas to come with grandchildren, aunties with nieces, and moms with their children to enjoy a fancy afternoon out. Thank you for joining us today as we watch our plans come to life.”

The Lutheran Church youth provided entertainment througho u t t h e p r o g r a m . Yo u t h m e mbers were: Luke Sandager, Kent Scheller, Erik Sandager, Harry Bartel, Macey Scheller, Anebeth Bartel, Maggie Bartel, Graison Belesky, Abby Scheller, Allie Scheller, Kyla Scheller and Freya Sandager.

Hoop Dancer to share his tradition in Preeceville and Sturgis The Preeceville Recreation Board along with the Good Spirit School Division will be presenting Terrance Littletent, hoop dancer in a special presentation in Preeceville and Sturgis on June 7.

Born in Regina, Littletent is from the Kawacatoose

Cree Nation where he inherited much of his traditional teachings through family and elders, singers and dancers, storytellers and academics, stated information from the Littletent website.

Terrance has traveled across Canada, the United States, and overseas,

Continued investment in career training for people with disabilities The Government of Saskatchewan announced its continued commitment to career training by investing $491,000 for the Saskatchewan Association of Rehabilitation Centres (SARC) to administer the Supported Employment Transition Initiative (SETI).

SETI provides community-based organizations across the province with funding to develop programs to help people with disabilities find employment, said a release. This funding for SARC will help up to 175 individuals with disabilities through 12 to 15 innovative projects over

the next year.

“Our government is proud to partner with organizations such as SARC to provide programs and services that help Saskatchewan people with disabilities access employment opportunities,” said Jeremy Harrison, immigration and career training minister, in the release. “SETI supports Saskatchewan’s Disability Strategy, with a goal to make Saskatchewan the best place in Canada for people with disabilities to live.”

“Every Saskatchewan citizen has the right to achieve meaningful and

competitive employment,” said Amy McNeil, SARC executive director.

“Innovative initiatives, like SETI, help people experiencing disability reach their goal of employment and living inclusive lives.

Companies that evolve their hiring practices quickly realize the many benefits of an inclusive workforce, including gaining great employees and seeing staff and customer loyalty rise.”

Projects in SETI primarily focus on skill enhancement and job search, which implement new and innovative ways to support individuals with disabilities access the labour market.
