Reading of the Best Christmas Pageant Ever recited to packed church The heartwarming message behind the reading of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever was played and shared by local readers when they urged audience members to listen and use their imaginations. The book reading was held at the Trinity United Church in Preeceville on December 12.

Sheila Ivanochko, Sheila Klebeck and Mikes Russell told the story in a relaxed setting set in front of the Christmas tree. “The evening was excellent,” said Ivanochko, who also directed.

“The audience really enjoyed themselves listening to the tales of the Herdman children. The evening was filled with

laughter, tears and experiencing the feeling of what Christmas really means as they followed the children in the book. The reading was a little different approach but it was a very successful and fun evening,” she said.

“The evening had audience members sitting back, relaxing and listening to the funny shenanigans that the children featured in the book get into and how they end up believing in Christmas.”

The play replaced the traditional reading of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol just for this year as way to switch things up and offer a quiet heartwarming evening filled with laughter, Ivanochko

stated.

The combined United Church children’s choir was accompanied by Bonnie Lisitza on piano as the children sang, Getting Nothing for Christmas; Away in the Manager; March of three Kings; Zumba, Zumba and Silent Night. The audience joined in the singing of Silent Night in the last two verses. The choir was directed by Carla Olson. Members of the choir were Olivia, Maggie and Elizabeth Ivanochko, Nevaeh Rudachyk, Sarah and Claire Masko, Franz and Fiona Pinaroc and Savannah Olson, The evening concluded with hot apple cider and goodies.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever follows the outrageous shenanigans of the Herdman siblings, or “the worst kids in the history of the world.” The siblings take over the annual Christmas pageant in a hilarious yet heart-warming tale involving the Three Wise Men, a ham, scared shepherds, and six rowdy kids.

Ralph, Imogene, Leroy, Claude, Ollie,

and Gladys Herdman are an awful bunch.

They set fire to Fred Shoemaker’s toolshed, blackmailed Wanda Pierce to get her charm bracelet, and smacked Alice Wendelken across the head. And that’s just the start. When the Herdmans show up at church for the free snacks and suddenly take over the Christmas pageant, the other kids are shocked. It’s obvious that they’re up to no good. But Christmas magic is all around and the Herdmans, who have never heard the Christmas story before, start to re-imagine it in their own way.

The building that housed the Sturgis Elementary School was purchased by the Town of Sturgis and renamed the Sturgis Multi-Complex.

The building that previously had been known as the Sturgis Elementary School has a new lease on life. The Town of Sturgis took over the ownership of the building a few months after the school amalgamated with the high school in June 2017.

Multi-Complex after suggestions and art work were submitted by elementary school children.

Town council selected the winning name from the entries.

“The Town took over the building with a vision of ensuring the 1 2 3 Care For Me Daycare remains in the community,” said

Mayor Alan Holmberg. “ The daycare plays a vital role in our community.

Spaces in other rooms are available to rent out as office space. We currently have the Sturgis Kinette nursery school, the Family Resource Centre and Ukrainian dance club utilizing some of the rooms,” he said.

Appointments made by RM of Hazel Dell council The Rural Municipality of Hazel Dell announced the 2019 committee and board appointments at the December 12th meeting of council, according to Christina Sorgen assistant administrator.

The reeve, division councilor and one other councillor plus grader operator for said division, if necessary, were all appointed to the road committee.

Appointed as fire rangers for the area north of the most southerly four miles of municipality to the North, East and West boundaries were Greg Smith, Fire Chief of the Lintlaw Fire Department (or active fire chief.) Appointed to area within the most southerly four miles of the municipality was Mark Eskra, Fire Chief of the Invermay Fire Department (or active fire chief.)

The council as a whole was appointed to the finance committee and to the Lintlaw and District Firefighting Association.

Endeavour Curling Rink faced with changes The Endeavour Recreation Board held its startup meeting on November 26.

“After much discussion it was decided that the curling rink is no longer viable due to the lack of interest and participation within the curling community,” said Brad Romanchuk, Mayor of the

Village of Endeavour.

The decision was not an easy one to make, stated Romanchuk.

It was decided that one of the ice surfaces of the curling rink be turned into a skating area for the young children to enjoy. The rink will also have some heat during the season.

Preparations for flooding of

the ice have begun.

“Wing nights will continue on Friday evenings and a potluck supper is being planned at the rink on December 28. The potluck supper is one of the fundraising events put on by the recreation board. Dates and times will be posted,” concluded Romanchuk.

A Decade Ago

The Preeceville School Students Against Drinking and Driving (SADD) chapter conducted a Red Ribbon campaign aimed at raising public awareness against drinking and driving, said Larissa Kowalchuk, teacher supervisor. ***** The Community Access Plan, developed to provide the general public with free computer and Internet access, was a success in Preeceville, according to Samantha Harris, site educator. ***** The Christmas plant known as a poinsettia has gained popularity throughout the years with customers asking for more and more of them, said Anne Nielsen of Country Lane Florist Plus in Preeceville. ***** The Sunday School children and teachers of the St. John North Prairie Lutheran Church were kept busy packing boxes with a variety of new items to be sent to children overseas during Operation Christmas Child, said Kim Dyky, co-ordinator. ***** The Sturgis and District Community Hall committee wound up its fundraising functions with a Winter Wonderland Day at the Hall. ***** Judy Bjornstad of Preeceville was a guest painter at the Girls on the Move program held in Preeceville. ***** The Preeceville Ukrainian Catholic Ladies Club members took on a shoe box project that helps support orphans in Ukraine, said Lorna Brodziak, spokesperson.

Quebec hypocritical on western oil When you break down who has gotten what from federal equalization since it came into existence in 1957, you come up with some interesting things.

For starters, total all the money withdrawn from the program in 61 years and you find that the west has received slightly over $57 billion or 14.4 per cent of the total doled out from this federal program designed to ensure all Canadians can enjoy a similar quality of living.

H o w e v e r, y o u m i g h t be amazed how massively disproportionate this money has been handed out to Western provinces.

While B.C. has received $3 billion (.6 per cent) and Saskatchewan has received $8 billion (2.1 per cent), Alberta has received $92 million (zero per cent, rounded off) reflective of

how seldom these “have provinces” have qualified because of their non-renewable fossil fuel resources.

In fact, Manitoba has received 80.7 per cent of all Western equalization money. Because it has less non-renewable oil and gas money and a lot of hydroelectric revenue not counted in the formula, Manitobans have received $46 billion or 11.7 per cent of Canada’s equalization payments throughout history.

In contrast to the West, equalization payments have been the lifeblood of Atlantic Provinces; $125 billion or 30.8 per cent of all equalization money doled out.

It breaks down as follows: Nova Scotia, $ 4 4 b i l l i o n o r 11 . 1 p e r cent; New Brunswick, $43 billion or 10.9 per cent, Newfoundland and

Labrador, $25 billion or 6.4 per cent, and; Prince Edward Island, $9 billion or 2.4 per cent.

Ontario, that has mostly been a “have province,” has received $17 billion or 4.2 per cent. However, its numbers are inflated because it is our largest province and equalization payments are partly doled out on a per capita basis.

But what will amaze many is how much Quebec has received; $198 billion or 50.5 per cent of all the equalization money.

And guess what? Quebec

is due for a whopping $1.3 billion more in 2019 for a total $14.1 billion.

Like all statistics, this one is best accompanied by a little perspective.

Quebec has a larger population than the entire Atlantic region, somewhat accounting for why it has received more money than those four provinces, combined.

It should also be noted that Quebec has been a legitimately poor province for much of Canada’s modern history. Fortunes have clearly smiled on la Belle

Province in recent years, but as recently as 2012 stories talked about Quebec being the poorest province in Canada.

Finally, it should again be noted that hydroelectric power is excluded from equalization calculations.

But it’s also in this fact where one begins to wonder why Quebec is so very oblivious as to how it benefits from Confederation.

One of those benefits is equalization that, essentially, winds up sharing Western oil riches with the rest of the nation.

Consider Quebec Premier Francois Legault’s comment that is there “no social acceptability for oil in Quebec”.

Well, Quebec’s behaviour doesn’t reflect its own rhetoric.

An increasingly affluent Quebec is now buying

more light and heavy trucks and SUVs than ever, so oil seems somewhat socially acceptable.

Up until 2016 when Quebec discovered the benefit of Enbridge’s pipeline that now allows Alberta oil into Quebec, 85 per cent of Quebec oil was imported from North African and Middle Eastern nations.

That it would rather have Middle Eastern oil than western oil is one thing.

But that it would turn around and accept equalization money, largely derived from the fact that western provinces are penalized for their oil to the direct benefit of Quebec through equalization, is quite another.

If this country is going to work, perhaps it should begin with certain parts of the country appreciating the west and realizing how lucky they are.

Reader disagrees with Ritz induction into Ag Hall of Fame Around November 9 many western newspapers contained a letter by Ian Robson of Manitoba, which pointed out the fallacy of former Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz being inducted to the Agriculture Hall of Fame.

The next issue contained a letter

by Kevin Bender, chair of Alberta Wheat Commission, strongly disagreeing with Robson’s analysis of why Ritz is a very poor selection.

Sorry Kevin, I agree with Robson’s analysis. Ritz was the head honcho in the attack to get rid of the farmer-owned Canadian Wheat Board (CWB), and in reality plundered and sold cheaply CWB assets owned by farmers.

Those assets included hopper cars, office buildings, grain ships, plus cash. These assets were practically given to a foreign entity.

Ritz also killed the community

pasture program, the shelterbelt program, the Indian Head Tree Nursery and cut Agri-stability programs. The port of Churchill along with the rail line was pretty much given to foreign-owned OmniTRAX. He gutted the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and cut $3 billion from Agriculture Canada. Spending cuts in the agriculture sector under Ritz in 2012-13 alone were nearly $15

million.

He not only threw farmers to the corporate wolves, but also endorsed the trade deals to weaken Canada’s supply management.

To add insult to injury, during the 2008 listeriosis crisis which had already killed 17 people, Ritz’s comment was “This is like death by a thousand cuts, or should I say cold cuts.” When informed that another death had

occurred in PEI, Ritz’s comment was “please tell me it’s Wayne Easter” who was the Liberal Ag critic at the time.

Does Kevin Bender or for t h a t m a t t e r To r o n t o ’s R o y a l Agriculture Winter Fair really think Ritz should be named to the Agriculture Hall of Fame? I do not.

How do you charge your electric truck when the power goes down?

I was just listening to British Columbia Premier John Horgan talk on December 5 about CleanBC, his governm e n t ’s c l i m a t e c h a n g e plan. Of particular interest was his reference to mandating zero emissions vehicles by 2040, in just 21 years. He’s aiming at electric and hydrogen fuelcell vehicles.

And then I thought back to December 4, when Saskatchewan had one of its greatest power outages ever. The most recent one of that scale was in the early 1980s, although we did have a big one in June.

Estevan was fortunate. Our power was out for about 25 minutes.

That’s probably because if Estevan doesn’t have power, pretty much no one will have power, due to the two nearby coal-fired power plants. Both of them, Shand and Boundary Dam Power Stations, and the Poplar River Power Station at Coronach, went down due to heavy frost taking down transmission l i n e s . Wi t h n o w h e r e t o

send power, they tripped o ff . We s o o n s a w w h a t happens in Saskatchewan without coal-fired power.

We lose almost half of our power generating capacity, and a huge chunk of the province goes dark.

A heroic effort by SaskPower workers, some of whom are my neighbours, got those power plants up again, and found ways to patch together the grid after hundreds of thousands of people spent a good chunk of a winter’s day in the dark.

I then thought of Horgan’s initiative to rid us, or at least B.C., of gasoline and diesel-powered light vehicles. If they go, so too will the gas station infrastructure that supports them.

After all, “Just over 20 years from now, all new light-duty cars and trucks sold in British Columbia will run on clean electricity from batteries or hydrogen fuel cells,” according to the CleanBC full report.

Now what happens if you end up with a scenario like Saskatchewan just

endured? How do the linemen, in their pickups, go out and fix the grid if their batteries are running low?

Where do the superchargers get the juice to charge these absolutely critical vehicles? And how do you recharge vehicles in the field working 16 or more hours straight, with heat going and motors running?

It’s not like you can top them up with a tidy tank.

And what if it’s not -12 C, but -43 C? How do you fix the grid?

You don’t. Now we’re in an apocalyptic death spiral where nothing works. You can’t charge th e v e h ic le s o n c e th ei r batteries die. You can’t fix the grid without vehicles.

Do you cue the zombies next? Call in reinforcements from a neighbouring

jurisdiction? How do they fuel their fleet, with no gas stations?

What did hospitals in t h e r e g i o n t u r n t o d u ring the blackout? Diesel generators. Okay, maybe diesel might be around still (for the transport trucks.) But how many people, on December 4, pulled out their gasolinepowered generators when the blackout started to get uncomfortable?

And if our electrical grid is so fragile that twice in six months, most of southeast Saskatchewan went dark, and all three coal-fired power plants tripped off and went down due to weather, how will it cope when each and every garage has a battery charger in it? Will we have to double our grid’s capacity?

Triple it?

Let’s do a thought experiment. The Regina Refinery Complex is capable of processing 135,000 barrels per day of oil, the bulk of which is consumed in Saskatchewan, but also in Alberta and Manitoba.

Wherever it is consumed, if we were to replace that energy with electrical energy, we would need, get this, 219,807,000 kilowatt hours of electrical power, per day. That would be 9,158 megawatts of electrical generating capacity required to replace the energy of 135,000 bpd of oil. SaskPower currently has 4,493 megawatts of capacity, and that would have to be running at 100 per cent capacity, since the consumption of 135,000 bpd is 100 per cent.

So we would need three times more power generating capacity then we have r i g h t n o w. P u t a n o t h e r way, we would have to build nine 1,000 megawatt nuclear power stations to replace that much oil consumption with electrical energy. Or we could just

build the eight-unit Bruce Nuclear Station (6,234 megawatts) one and a half times, and hope it never goes down. Ever.

All of this is to replace the energy output of just one refinery, in Regina.

How many more nukes will you need to replace Edmonton’s refinery row?

B u t l e t ’s g e t b a c k to more practical considerations.

I never thought of this before; how do people who do not own their own parking spot, charge their vehicles? What if they must park on the street? Or in an apartment parking lot?

Where will they charge their SUVs and pickups?

Since GM and Ford don’t plan on making many cars anymore, how much juice is going to be needed to charge all these electric pickups?

Even if a miracle occurs in the next few years in battery capacity, there will be no miracles on the grid and electrical capacity side.

Horgan’s 2040 plan will never work.

World Soil Day highlights importance of this resource When it comes to food production there are two crucial elements, water and soil.

While we tend to understand there is a threat to water in terms of pollution and how the resource is ultimately used, we perhaps forget that soil is a fragile resource.

“Even though we can see many of the changes we have made to our planet, some of our impacts are virtually invisible, and soil pollution is a good example,” notes www.un.org.

With that in mind it is not surprising that Be the Solution to Soil Pollution was the campaign for World

Soil Day 2018, which was marked on December 5.

World Soil Day is celebrated annually on the fifth day of December at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations headquarters in Rome.

According to the website the situation is worse than most would think, living in Saskatchewan or on the Canadian Prairies.

“One third of our global soils are already degraded,” suggests the site. “Yet we risk losing more due to this hidden danger. Soil pollution can be invisible and seem far away but everyone, everywhere is affected.

With a growing population expected to reach 9 billion by 2050, soil pollution is a worldwide problem which degrades our soils, poisons the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe.”

But, perhaps that is because farm producers here have been ahead of the curve in terms of protecting the soil resource by practices such as zero-till which greatly lessens the impact of wind and water erosion on soils.

There is also increased awareness of how water flows not just over a single field, but through a much larger watershed, and the need to balance that drainage with the needs of farm production.

Still, the day has its merits, simply as a reminder that we need continued diligence in terms of preserving our soil resource.

Reader disagrees with Ritz induction into Ag Hall of Fame Around November 9 many western newspapers contained a letter by Ian Robson of Manitoba, which pointed out the fallacy of former Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz being inducted to the Agriculture Hall of Fame.

The next issue contained a letter

by Kevin Bender, chair of Alberta Wheat Commission, strongly disagreeing with Robson’s analysis of why Ritz is a very poor selection.

Sorry Kevin, I agree with Robson’s analysis. Ritz was the head honcho in the attack to get rid of the farmer-owned Canadian Wheat Board (CWB), and in reality plundered and sold cheaply CWB assets owned by farmers.

Those assets included hopper cars, office buildings, grain ships, plus cash. These assets were practically given to a foreign entity.

Ritz also killed the community

pasture program, the shelterbelt program, the Indian Head Tree Nursery and cut Agri-stability programs. The port of Churchill along with the rail line was pretty much given to foreign-owned OmniTRAX. He gutted the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and cut $3 billion from Agriculture Canada. Spending cuts in the agriculture sector under Ritz in 2012-13 alone were nearly $15

million.

He not only threw farmers to the corporate wolves, but also endorsed the trade deals to weaken Canada’s supply management.

To add insult to injury, during the 2008 listeriosis crisis which had already killed 17 people, Ritz’s comment was “This is like death by a thousand cuts, or should I say cold cuts.” When informed that another death had

occurred in PEI, Ritz’s comment was “please tell me it’s Wayne Easter” who was the Liberal Ag critic at the time.

How do you charge your electric truck when the power goes down?

I was just listening to British Columbia Premier John Horgan talk on December 5 about CleanBC, his governm e n t ’s c l i m a t e c h a n g e plan. Of particular interest was his reference to mandating zero emissions vehicles by 2040, in just 21 years. He’s aiming at electric and hydrogen fuelcell vehicles.

And then I thought back to December 4, when Saskatchewan had one of its greatest power outages ever. The most recent one of that scale was in the early 1980s, although we did have a big one in June.

Estevan was fortunate. Our power was out for about 25 minutes.

That’s probably because if Estevan doesn’t have power, pretty much no one will have power, due to the two nearby coal-fired power plants. Both of them, Shand and Boundary Dam Power Stations, and the Poplar River Power Station at Coronach, went down due to heavy frost taking down transmission l i n e s . Wi t h n o w h e r e t o

send power, they tripped o ff . We s o o n s a w w h a t happens in Saskatchewan without coal-fired power.

We lose almost half of our power generating capacity, and a huge chunk of the province goes dark.

A heroic effort by SaskPower workers, some of whom are my neighbours, got those power plants up again, and found ways to patch together the grid after hundreds of thousands of people spent a good chunk of a winter’s day in the dark.

I then thought of Horgan’s initiative to rid us, or at least B.C., of gasoline and diesel-powered light vehicles. If they go, so too will the gas station infrastructure that supports them.

After all, “Just over 20 years from now, all new light-duty cars and trucks sold in British Columbia will run on clean electricity from batteries or hydrogen fuel cells,” according to the CleanBC full report.

Now what happens if you end up with a scenario like Saskatchewan just

endured? How do the linemen, in their pickups, go out and fix the grid if their batteries are running low?

Where do the superchargers get the juice to charge these absolutely critical vehicles? And how do you recharge vehicles in the field working 16 or more hours straight, with heat going and motors running?

It’s not like you can top them up with a tidy tank.

And what if it’s not -12 C, but -43 C? How do you fix the grid?

You don’t. Now we’re in an apocalyptic death spiral where nothing works. You can’t charge th e v e h ic le s o n c e th ei r batteries die. You can’t fix the grid without vehicles.

Do you cue the zombies next? Call in reinforcements from a neighbouring

jurisdiction? How do they fuel their fleet, with no gas stations?

What did hospitals in t h e r e g i o n t u r n t o d u ring the blackout? Diesel generators. Okay, maybe diesel might be around still (for the transport trucks.) But how many people, on December 4, pulled out their gasolinepowered generators when the blackout started to get uncomfortable?

And if our electrical grid is so fragile that twice in six months, most of southeast Saskatchewan went dark, and all three coal-fired power plants tripped off and went down due to weather, how will it cope when each and every garage has a battery charger in it? Will we have to double our grid’s capacity?

Triple it?

Let’s do a thought experiment. The Regina Refinery Complex is capable of processing 135,000 barrels per day of oil, the bulk of which is consumed in Saskatchewan, but also in Alberta and Manitoba.

Wherever it is consumed, if we were to replace that energy with electrical energy, we would need, get this, 219,807,000 kilowatt hours of electrical power, per day. That would be 9,158 megawatts of electrical generating capacity required to replace the energy of 135,000 bpd of oil. SaskPower currently has 4,493 megawatts of capacity, and that would have to be running at 100 per cent capacity, since the consumption of 135,000 bpd is 100 per cent.

So we would need three times more power generating capacity then we have r i g h t n o w. P u t a n o t h e r way, we would have to build nine 1,000 megawatt nuclear power stations to replace that much oil consumption with electrical energy. Or we could just

build the eight-unit Bruce Nuclear Station (6,234 megawatts) one and a half times, and hope it never goes down. Ever.

All of this is to replace the energy output of just one refinery, in Regina.

How many more nukes will you need to replace Edmonton’s refinery row?

B u t l e t ’s g e t b a c k to more practical considerations.

I never thought of this before; how do people who do not own their own parking spot, charge their vehicles? What if they must park on the street? Or in an apartment parking lot?

Where will they charge their SUVs and pickups?

Since GM and Ford don’t plan on making many cars anymore, how much juice is going to be needed to charge all these electric pickups?

Even if a miracle occurs in the next few years in battery capacity, there will be no miracles on the grid and electrical capacity side.

Horgan’s 2040 plan will never work.

World Soil Day highlights importance of this resource When it comes to food production there are two crucial elements, water and soil.

While we tend to understand there is a threat to water in terms of pollution and how the resource is ultimately used, we perhaps forget that soil is a fragile resource.

“Even though we can see many of the changes we have made to our planet, some of our impacts are virtually invisible, and soil pollution is a good example,” notes www.un.org.

With that in mind it is not surprising that Be the Solution to Soil Pollution was the campaign for World

Soil Day 2018, which was marked on December 5.

World Soil Day is celebrated annually on the fifth day of December at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations headquarters in Rome.

According to the website the situation is worse than most would think, living in Saskatchewan or on the Canadian Prairies.

“One third of our global soils are already degraded,” suggests the site. “Yet we risk losing more due to this hidden danger. Soil pollution can be invisible and seem far away but everyone, everywhere is affected.

Sturgis Students perform Christmas concert T h e S t u rg i s Elementary students performed their Christmas concert in the Sturgis Composite School to a full gymnasium on December 13.

Brad Cameron, principal, was the master of ceremonies for the evening.

“The staff and students have been working hard and are pleased to bring you a little bit of Christmas,” Cameron said.

Val Hallick was the pianist who accompanied the students in their musical performances.

The Grade 5 school band performed, All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth.

The kindergarten class under the direction of L i s a S e r d a c h n y p e rformed the poems, Five Little Gingerbread and Jingle Bells.

The Grade 1 and 2 class performed the Jingle Bells song.

The Grade 3 and 4 class performed a song, instrumental and choral

reading to ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.

The Grade 1 class performed two songs, Bake Little Gingerbread and Gingerbread Rock.

The Grade 5 class performed a play titled The Santa Interviews.

Santa interviews famous holiday characters for the job of Lead Cookie Supervisor. With his assistant and two favourite elves, Santa makes his way through one failed interview after another.

Prancer wants the job because she’s tired of pulling the sleigh. Frosty the Snowman melts before he is even interviewed. A creepy elf who is running from the law applies, and even Scrooge wants the position.

Kindergarten, Grade 1 and 2 students performed a dance to Santa Claus is Coming to Town.

The kindergarten to Grade 5 students concluded the evening by singing, We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

Sturgis students acknowledged for improving attendance record The Good Spirit School Division acknowledged s t u d e n t s i n t h e S t u rg i s Composite School for achieving an increase in attendance.

“The school division had a goal that by June 2020 that students would achieve at least a five percent increase in attendance,” said Robertson.”

“What we discovered when we looked at the attendance for the Sturgis Composite School was that students in this school have exceptional attendance. In fact, there were five grades (Grades 4,6,7,8 and 9) that had every student within the class miss less than 10 percent of school from September to the end of November. We also determined that there were many students who had perfect attendance so far this year,” The division drew names from each grade among students who were perfect attendees.

DEMUCHA - Mrs. Rosilda Demucha of Preeceville, beloved wife of Hilary Demucha, passed away November 29, 2018 in Preeceville, SK at the age of 88 years. Rosilda was born January 7, 1930 in Doremy, SK to parents Romuald and Elida (nee Langlois). She is survived by her loving husband Hilary Demucha; her brother Jean (Simone) LeBlanc; sisters Francoise Langlois, Madeleine Mockford, Adele (Roger) Bertrand and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents Romuald and Elida (nee Langlois) LeBlanc; brothers Louis (Elizabeth) LeBlanc and Monseigneur Martial LeBlanc; sisters Sister Marie Jeanne (Filles de la Providence), Helene (Alphonse) Tousignant and Priscilla (Maurice) Haudegand; brothers-in-law Alex Mockford and Rosaire Langlois; nephew Bernard LeBlanc and great-niece Katrina LeBlanc. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Patrick’s Church, Sturgis, Sask. with Reverend Father Michal Pajak, OMI and Reverend Father Andrew Sowa, OMI officiating. The interment followed in the Canora Town Cemetery with James Ball, Thomas Smud, Ben Musey, Bert Suknasky, Dale Lisoway and Dalven Sopel serving as pallbearers. Memorials in memory of Rosilda may be made to the Preeceville Long Term Care Auxiliary. Condolences to the family can be at www.preecevillefuneralhome.com.

LTC auxiliary plays vital roll in lives of residents Preeceville and District Long Term Auxiliary continues to play an active roll in the enriching the residents’ care through numerous events held throughout the year, stated Hope Luciw, president of the auxiliary.

“This past year has seen the auxiliary

purchase numerous items that help to enlighten the lives of our residents. Through bake sales, teas, and donations we are able to purchase extra things for the residents. said Luciw.

Some of the items purchased by the auxiliary include: two banquet tables;

two special air mattresses; 12 stacking chairs; two lawn chairs; gifts of a quilt for Mother ’s Day and Father ’s Day; Christmas gifts for each resident; appreciation gifts for the individuals who have provided musical entertainment for the residents; fall and Christmas

tablecloths; catheter bag covers; a memorial tree and subscription to the Preeceville Progress.

The auxiliary has also helped to provide lunch and cake for the January birthday month and lunch on the monthly meeting day.

Agriculture scholarship program now accepting applications

Students wishing to submit an application for the 2019 Saskatchewan Agriculture Scholarship program can now do so, according to a release from the Saskatchewan government.

“Our government is proud to support a strong

participation of young Canadians in the agriculture and food industry which is essential to the future and growth of our sector,” said Lawrence MacAulay, minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. “Through scholarships like these,

we’re giving students the knowledge, skills and tools they need to succeed in an industry that’s growing our economy and creating wellpaying jobs.”

Tearful memorial tree lighting ceremony held Community members gathered in the cold to pay tribute to loved ones who died throughout the years in a special Christmas bulb lighting ceremony.

The ceremony was held in Preeceville at the end of Main Street where the memorial tree was located on December 6.

Reverend Miles Russell gave a prayer and spoke of the Christmas season.

“At Christmas time in Canada, it is a religious

and spiritual celebration for some: a family occasion for most, and a season of goodwill and giving for others in the community for many, across our land, regardless of their religion or culture,” said Russell.

For many of us Christmas brings back many fond memories of times past that speak about how we celebrate this season and with whom we celebrated. When we think back, we often experience deeply held and felt feelings and emotions that fill us.

Russell continued as he recited some personal memories of how his family celebrated Christmas.

“There are many ways in which families celebrate Christmas throughout the generations. Each of us have fond memories of those special ways but the way we celebrate changes over time, as families grow and families change.

“But as this season we not only celebrate in the present, but it seems that it brings up the special memories of celebrating in the past and more than that it reminds us and draws close to our hearts the ones we have celebrated with in the past, but who are also no longer with us,” he stated.

Christmas Message recalled

He was sent to a virgin. The girl was engaged to a man named Joseph. He came from the family line o f D a v i d . T h e v i rg i n ’s name was Mary. The angel greeted her and said, “The Lord has given you

special favor. He is with you.” Mary was very upset because of his words. She wondered what kind of greeting this could be.

But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary. God is very pleased with you. You will become pregnant and give birth to a son. You must name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High God. The Lord God will make Him a king like his father David of long ago. He will rule forever

“How can this happen?”

Mary asked the angel. “I am a virgin.”

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come to you. The power of the Most High God will cover you. So the holy one that is born will be called the Son of God.” (Luke 1:26-35 NIRV) The Christmas story is full of God doing the impossible. Mary became pregnant while she was still a virgin.

Even as I type that, my mind thinks of how impossible that was. Then, the fact that her fiancé stayed

with her was a miracle.

Can you imagine his predicament? He knew just how impossible it was for her to be pregnant, but he believed the angel just like Mary did.

I’m sure he knew the prophecy of God giving them a sign of a virgin conceiving. Then, when it was time to give birth, finding a place to stay and have the baby proved seemingly impossible. They went from family member to family member, then from hotel to hotel looking for a place to stay.

I’m sure they prayed for God to do the impossible and find them a place to stay. God answered their

Yes, the Christmas story is full of God doing the impossible. It’s His way of reminding you and I that there is nothing we face that He can’t resolve. The angel in Luke 1:37 said it best, “For there is nothing that God cannot do” (GNT.) God is the same yesterday, today and forever. If He did the impossible back then, He’s still doing it today and will keep doing it tomorrow. I believe God delights in doing the impossible just to show us He hears us and loves us. Don’t be afraid to ask God to do the impossible. He’s pretty good at making it happen.

Tonight with the memories you bring of those who brought light into your lives, symbolized by the bulbs on this Christmas tree, and with the promise of God’s light of life in Jesus, to guide us tonight and always, we can know the peace and love at the heart of this season this year. So fill your hearts with the light and love of Christ, God’s most precious gifts and continue to share the light of love and hope, compassion and generosity this Christmas time and into this coming New Year,” concluded Russell.

Christmas celebrations were indeed a thing of wonder

by Rev. Miles J. Russell of the Preeceville-Sturgis United Church Pastoral Charge When I was a child, Christmas celebrations were indeed a thing of wonder.

The excitement of going to bed on Christmas Eve and trying to sleep before Santa Claus would arrive with the Christmas presents was almost more than I could bear.

And the morning was an early rise (about 6 a.m.) when as a family, we turned on some Christmas music to play, while we opened gifts. Then, after breakfast, while we children played with our toys, our parents began the work of preparing for the company who were coming for Christmas Day and our special Christmas meal.

It was exciting and a day of wonder.

For many people Christmas does not bring “wonder” or “excitement.”

There are too many stresses for some, as they rush t o g e t t h i n g s r e a d y, a s they worry about paying the bills and extra spending, at this time of year. And still for others, Christmas is a reminder of

the many losses in life; the empty places around the Christmas table. For many of us it can be a lonely time as we think about those family or friends who have moved away, or those who have died and no longer share this special day with us.

There are many Christmas movies at this time of year. They are often about sentimental or even romantic love. They are often about so-called “miracles” of Christmas where everything turns out right in the end. They do not reflect the reality of life or Christmas for most people.

The idea of excitement and wonder in a Christmas movie or for myself as a young child long ago, is not true for many adults or children amongst our extended families and communities.

But if we stop for a moment to remember the spiritual and religious basis for this celebration, we might just discover “wonder” and “excitement” again.

The “wonder” of Christmas is that “God is love,” and has come as a baby, a real, flesh and blood child, to share our

life with us. Remember the birth of Jesus is about a real person: Jesus of Nazareth. We know where He lived. We know a lot about what He taught. We know many of the names o f H i s f a m i l y, l i k e H i s mother Mary and father Joseph. We know He was crucified by the Romans when He was a young man.

And we know that His followers believe that God raised Him to life after His death.

The meaning of this birth we celebrate at Christmas is that God reaches to us in love through this child. This is the “wonder” of this celebration; God does love this world and has acted in this child to heal the brokenness and suffering experienced on the earth.

And the “wonder” of this love is particularly relevant for people of the modern world. Many modern people believe they are “on their own” in life.

Many feel forgotten and irrelevant in a big, often harsh world. Many believe that the brokenness, injustice, suffering, and sorrow they see is all there is in life. But the spiritual basis of Jesus’ birth shows us

the “wonder”, that we are not alone, but live in God’s world, and that we are beloved by God. The meaning of Christ’s birth, life and death is that nothing will separate us from God’s love in Jesus. This Child of Bethlehem will grow and reveal the vision and dream of God for life and world made whole. This means that what we see in this life is not all there is to see or

hope for. But the possibility of a world of peace, justice, love, healing, wholeness and new life is there because God offers this vision and dream through the Child of Bethlehem.

And so the “excitement” of Christmas is not so much for that bicycle or toy dump truck I received from Santa those many years ago, but it is for the hope and the truth that you

and I are deeply loved by God. The “excitement” and “wonder” of this season of faith is that life can be full, when we follow in the way and spirit of this Child of Bethlehem, who shows us the power of compassion, healing, and new life.

Merry Christmas, and may the “wonder” and “excitement” of the birth of Jesus fill your heart and life today and always.

Important to keep Christmas traditions

By Reverend Barbara Forsyth St. James Anglican, Endeavour Have you noticed that tradition is very important at this time of the year?

We sing the same carols and songs and eat the same food. Every once in awhile someone sneaks something different into the Christmas tradition but for the most part we stick with our favourite things.

classics on TV every year.

Everyone has their particular favourite, whether it is one of the movies, It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street or Scrooge.

One of my favourites is A Charlie Brown Christmas TV special, which was first broadcast in 1965. In the special, lead character Charlie Brown finds himself depressed despite the start of the cheerful Christmas season. Lucy suggests he direct a school Christmas play, but he

is both ignored and mocked by his classmates. During the direction of the school play Charlie Brown loudly asks if anybody really knows what Christmas is all about. Linus, standing alone on the stage, states he can tell him, and recites the annunciation to the shepherds from the Gospel of Luke.

“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. The angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. The angel said unto them, Fear not; for, behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. This shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling

clothes, lying in a manger.

Suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and goodwill towards men. “ “That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown,” Linus declared.

I suspect that most of us, like Linus, have this familiar passage practically memorized. But, that is the beauty of tradition and ritual. We celebrate and remember this beautiful account every year.

There is no need to produce something new and clever, we just have to remind ourselves of the truth of the story that God came into human history as a completely helpless newborn and was laid in a manger. God became “one of us.” God has not forgotten us or abandoned us.

God is with us.

Christmas Carol Festival enjoyed by many The Christmas season kicked off with the Preeceville and District Ministerial Inter-Community Carol Festival which included many Christmas musical selections. The festival was held at the Preeceville Community Legion Hall on December 2.

Kathleen Pitt was the master of ceremonies.

Doreen and Evan Bochniuk were door greeters.

Hein Bertram kicked off the program by singing Ukrainian Caro.

The Woodland Chorus o f J a c k J a q u e s , Wi l l i e Jakubowski and Ray Scarth thrilled the audience with their rendition of Who Do You Think and Children Go Where I Send You. The St. John Lutheran Church youth performed Christmas is Jesus. Reneye Scheller and Angela Scheller were the directors and Maicey Scheller was the pianist. Erik Sandager, Harry Bartel and Kent Scheller were the guitarists.

Barb Forsyth recited a scripture reading.

The audience participated in a sing-a-long of Joy to the World and Silent Night, accompanied by the Good Spirit School Division senior

band.

The combined Grace and Trinity United Church choir performed In a Lowly Cattle Stall and Good Will to All, under the direction of Laura Davis and accompanied by Karolyn Kosheluk, pianist.

The trio of Hein Bertram, Cathy Meyer and Welma Bartel sang two Christmas carols in Afrikaans language, The Saviour Was Born and Come Children Sing.

The Good Spirit School Division Intermediate and Sophomore band played, Christmas Concerto #3 and All I Want for Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth.)

Rachel Honig and Simon Hanson performed a duet, Preparing His Bed. Cassandra Danyluk of Canora performed a guitar solo to Santa Baby.

Cathy Meyer and Hein Bertram performed a duet, There Came a Little Child to Earth.

The Good Spirit Division senior band concluded the program by performing December Sky and 20 Carols in 2 minutes.

All the proceeds from the free will offering will go towards Funding the Preeceville and District More Photos and story on Pages B6 and B7

The Trinity and Grace United Churches combined choir under the direction of Leanne McDonald performed and Karolyn Kosheluk accompanied on the piano.

The St. John Lutheran Church youth choir under the guidance of Reneye and Becky Scheller entertained the audience.

As we celebrate this special season, I am pleased to extend greetings on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada.

This has been a remarkable year for me, as I had the honour of becoming S a s k a t c h e w a n ’s 2 2 n d Lieutenant Governor in March. As I have travelled across our beautiful province, I have been very impressed by our outstanding volunteers. I am grateful to everyone who donates their time to improve the lives of others.

I also want to thank the many Indigenous communities who have invited me to visit and have given me a warm welcome. I have had the privilege of taking

part in pow wows, treaty gatherings, a sweat lodge, flag-raisings, declaration signings, and many other celebrations. At each of these meaningful events, I have witnessed both a respect for cultural traditions and creative innovation. I wish to express my gratitude to everyone who is exploring how we can achieve reconciliation together.

This year I have met many inspiring young people. The youth of our province are providing leadership in many areas, including mental health, overcoming racism, and welcoming new Canadians.

Our impressive young leaders are reason for great hope for our future.

This has been a year of

Lieut.-Gov. W. Thomas Molloy sadness for many. 2018 will long be remembered as the year of the Humboldt Broncos accident. The crash claimed the lives of 16 people who were deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Others in our province have also experienced personal hardship this year.

I have been inspired by those who face challenges with courage and resilience.

Many see adversity as an opportunity not only to find solutions for themselves, but to help others. This is the Saskatchewan way.

For me, this season is an opportunity to spend time with family and friends, and also to give thanks for my many blessings. I am truly grateful to call Saskatchewan home. My experiences in this role have filled me with hope for all that we can accomplish together.

Concert captures spirit of Christmas The spirit of Christmas echoed through the church during the Evangel Tabernacle Christmas concert on December 9.

Rachel Honig and her brother Simon Hanson opened the concert by performing a Christmas duet.

Ben Karcha followed next on the program with numerous Christmas solo performances.

Hudson, Levi and Isaiah Maier performed Jingle Bells on piano. Megan and Nathan Maier sang Holy Night.

Christmas message from Premier Scott Moe Roughly 2000 years ago, a group of people were out on the night shift, somewhere in the countryside.

It was likely the same group of people who worked the day shift. There was no limit to the hours they put in.

And there was no overtime pay either.

Nobody in charge cared about their stress level or their benefits, because they were shepherds. And shepherds were at the bottom of the Judean social ladder.

The fact that those lowly shepherds were the first ones

to hear the Christmas message was unexpected.

But Someone thought they were worthy. Someone was unconcerned about their social status. Maybe Someone did it on purpose.

It’s part of the Christmas story that shows us, year after year, that everyone deserves to hear a message of love, no matter their station in life.

Those shepherds must have been filled with total fear and awe.

Imagine, you’re out in the pasture, probably half-asleep.

Nothing around you but the

nighttime and the smell of sheep.

And suddenly the sky lights up and angels, yes angels, are singing: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, good will toward men.”

The fragile little baby in this Christmas story comes to brings us peace and love.

And reminds us every year to spread His love to those around us.

Christmas is a time of joy.

But it’s also a time of sorrow for many, and we all know someone who could use a kind word or a helping hand.

It might be the family who just lost their mother and grandmother in a sudden accident, or a young man waiting desperately for a heart transplant.

It might be a family going through a financial setback, or a young woman fighting addiction, feeling lost and alone. Or the families of a hockey team who have lost so much but won the hearts of the world.

George Matthew Adams said, “Let us remember that a Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide-open heart that thinks of others first”.

Standing up for Saskatchewan means we look out for each other.

As you go from city, to small town, to countryside in this great province, it amazes me how people do just that: look out for one another.

And they do it in so many ways: through volunteering, fundraising, helping refugee families and supporting those

Premier Scott Moe in crisis.

Saskatchewan people, we reach out to others, always, without question, extending the hand of friendship to those in need.

Around the world and right here at home, our province continues to be a shining example, and I am so proud to call Saskatchewan my home.

So from my wife Krista and I, and our family, and

on behalf of my colleagues in the Government of Saskatchewan: May the wondrous spirit of Christmas fill your heart with peace and love.

of good news, of hope; a message of love for all, and in particular, love for the least among us.

Saskatchewan has been

blessed with great people and great natural wealth.

Yet, amidst that plenty, we know there are too many who go without. There are too many in our province today who will struggle through the holidays.

Struggle with depression or anxiety. Struggle with caring for aging loved ones or worries of the

future of their children and grandchildren. There will be people who struggle with poverty and hunger and with loneliness and grief.

Our acts of charity and philanthropy matter. The gifts we give of our time, our hard-earned money, of ourselves, that generosity makes a difference.

And that spirit of generosity must go beyond acts of service to acts of public service. The work we do here in the legislature, the work of government can and should be a powerful force for good. There is so

much we can do to make our communities better, to help those in need today and to grow our prosperity so that fewer find themselves struggling in the years to come.

So, however you may celebrate, let us be good and kind to e a c h o t h e r, l e t ’s e n j o y this holiday season. Let’s make the most of special times with family and friends, and let’s commit to extending the spirit of the season all through the year ahead.

For me Christmas was always a special time of traveling with my family by horse drawn sleigh to grandma’s for a big dinner with all my favourite dishes.

Christmas time was a busy time of year for my family. We would eat a big special meal at grandma’s before attending midnight mass on Christmas eve and then go to my other grandma’s for lunch the next day.

My favourite Christmas memory was visiting with family. I also remember a Christmas where we all had our stockings set out and all received special treats except for one year where my dad received a piece of wood in his stocking.

Nisse Christmas in Canada

By Kaare Askildt A nisse is a small elf, and some reside on the north Pole as Santa’s helpers.

Nisse also live in all the forests around the world. They have been known to help the farmers and they also tend to all animals, both domestic and wild. Santa Claus is the biggest nisse both in size, stature and social ranking, and also in charge of all nisse world wide.

It was the year 2018, and Christmas was fast approaching. Santa Claus had called on Eskel to arrange for a meeting with all the Canadian nisse, to discuss how to effectively handle the distribution of Christmas gifts in Canada. The meeting was convened on the first of November deep in the Saskatchewan boreal forest and protected with a circle of cougars, wolves and bears.

Santa Clause had arrived from the North Pole on his special sleigh drawn by two of his trusted reindeer, Comet and Blitzen. Eskel and Astrid were the hosts, and Terje with his wife Ingrid had travelled on the backs of magic flying elks from the Rocky Mountains.

Geir and Asta arrived by a caribou drawn sleigh from Prince George, B.C. and Gudbrand with his wife Åse were transported by moose from Peterborough, Ont. Eskel called the meeting to order and introduced Santa.

Santa told them that there is too much space debris floating around as well as increased numbers of satellites, and that unmanned drones both armed and unarmed were becoming a dangerous problem for him.

In addition to that, Santa felt that he was getting too old to keep travelling around the world distributing presents to each and every household in one night.

He was wanting to implement the plan in Canada first, as the North Pole is situated in Canada, and

then make arrangements with Scandinavia and the rest of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, all the Asian countries as well as the U.S. and Latin America during the next four years. His plan was to deliver all the Canadian presents to Eskel, and that Eskel would enlist the other Canadian nisse for distribution.

Santa would arrange for another 20 nisse to travel from the N orth P ole to assist with the work. As compensation for taking on the distribution task, Santa would provide the Canadian nisse with all the magic animal healing potions they required. They all agreed to help out, and the traditional heel toe nisse bumps were done to seal the deal.

Eskel and Terje drew up a plan of action where each nisse was assigned a certain area of Canada for gift distribution. Santa would deliver the gifts to Eskel in the middle of December.

Astrid and Ingrid would sort the gifts.

On Christmas Eve, Geir and Asta with the help of five nisse from the North Pole, would distribute the gifts in Saskatchewan and westward to and including Vancouver Island. Gudbrand and Åse, with the assistance of the rest of the North Pole nisse would take care of Manitoba and the rest of the eastern provinces, which left the Northern Territories to be split between Eskel and Terje, assisted by their wives Astrid and Ingrid.

The distribution was a nightmare of epic proportions. Each nisse had a sleigh loaded with presents and pulled by a reindeer.

Where there was a fireplace the nisse would park on the roof and slide down the chimney with the presents. Some of the nisse had forgotten to make sure the embers were out in the fireplaces and had gotten their butts singed.

Parking on the peaked

roofs with the sleighs proved to be very tricky, and many of the sleighs slid off the rooves, dragging the reindeer with them and crashing on the back decks or front stoops, waking up everybody in the household.

A couple of nisse had been arrested by the police for causing damage to private property. Where there were no fireplaces, the nisse would magically and quietly open the back door and tippy toe to where the decorated tree sat in the corner. The nisse were dressed in their traditional red and white festive clothing while distributing the gifts, instead of wearing the drab grey outfits that made them invisible.

Some parents were up late still decorating the tree when the nisse walked in through the back door. They would freak out and call the police who arrested the nisse for breaking and entering. Santa had to come from the North Pole to post bail and get all his nisse out of the various provincial jails.

One nisse was almost c a u g h t b y s i x - y e a r- o l d Casey, and he had to twinkle his nose to put Casey to sleep with some nice dreams about reindeer and Santa Claus. In spite of the confusion and mayhem the nisse were able to visit all the Canadian households and deliver the presents, but only just in time for Christmas morning.

However, rather than milk with the cookies, many of the nisse found a potent eggnog instead which was liberally infused with rum.

The rum eggnog caused them to almost lose control of their reindeer and confuse the Canadian air traffic controllers with their erratic flight patterns created on their way back to Eskel’s place.

After the gift distribution they all gathered in the large barn at Eskel and Astrid’s acreage. The women took

command of the kitchen, while the men tended to all the animals. Then they all had a nap and rested up to be ready for the evening festivities.

The barn had been cleared out and set up with an extra long table and wooden chairs. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived to take part in the Christmas feast.

They were seated at the head of the table as honored guests. Eskel and Astrid were seated at the other end of the table, close to the kitchen. The nisse ladies served the main course of steaming rømmegrøt (sour cream porridge), individually served on Eskel and Astrid’s best deep-dish china, complete with an eye

of butter in the centre and sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon.

The men hurried to pour the homemade mead from a wooden cask into special wooden tankards, to go with the porridge. The dessert was caramel pudding (caramel custard) drenched in syrup and accompanied by a special and slightly intoxicating sweet tasting libation called mossavitt, distilled from a mash of reindeer moss, chilled and served in small hand-made wooden cups.

After the delicious meal, gifts were exchanged around the table followed by hugs and nose rubbing. Rubbing noses is the nisse way of showing affection. Then

some of the nisse took out their musical instruments which they had brought along, consisting of a mouth harp, a hardanger fiddle, a lure (a long trumpet-like horn made out of wood) and timpani drums made from reindeer hide. They made merry, enjoyed themselves and danced the night away to their traditional tunes.

It was the first of a traditional Canadian nisse Christmas celebration.

You won’t be able to ever see them during the year, because they dress in camo clothing that makes them blend into the scenery.

But you should know that the nisse are tending to your animals when they need it.

Take the 21-Day Challenge Driving is a task that requires complete attention to the road.

Inclement weather, unexpected actions from fellow drivers and challenging situations can all arise at a moment’s notice, making it crucial for Canadians to keep their eyes on the road at all times. Unfortunately, however, distracted driving continues to be a significant issue on roads across Canada, according to a Canada Safety Council release.

“It is a hard habit to break,” said Ottawa Police Constable Philip Kane, “but they say that it takes 21 days to break a bad habit.”

Why not make today day one? To mark this year’s National Safe Driving Week, the Canada Safety Council and TELUS invite you to take the 21-day challenge and make a concerted effort to leave the phone alone while driving, said the release.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, distracted driving factors into approximately four million collisions annually in North America. And while

public opinion seems to be that distracted driving is unacceptable, it still creeps into a driver’s day-to-day habits.

Kane sees the impact of distraction on a daily basis. And according to him, the impact reaches far beyond any potential financial punishment.

“We’re seeing far too many collisions where lives are lost because of that text or that Facebook post or checking Twitter,” said Kane. “It’s not necessarily the fine itself. You could be leaving someone you love, and they’ve got to pick up the pieces.”

The solution, of course, is fairly simple. Don’t use your phone while driving. But as we all know, it’s never as simple as that.

The phone buzzes in your pocket and you’re innately curious; after all, it’s human nature. But Kane offers a quick and easy solution to this dilemma.

“Keep your phone on silent,” he said. “Put it in your purse or in your pocket. It’s where I keep mine so I’m not tempted to answer it.”

The lack of a tactile or

visual cues makes it much easier to ignore an incoming message, but that’s only half the solution. Nimtaz Kanji, Director of TELUS Wise, a free digital safety education program, adds, “let people in your life know that if you’re driving, you won’t answer messages. Let them know you want to get home safely.”

“We have a responsibility not only to ourselves but to everyone else on the road; whether that’s other drivers, pedestrians or cyclists; that everybody has to get home safely,” said Kane.

Holodomor and Ukrainian Culture highlight gathering in Rama A commemoration of the Holodomor and the Preservation of the Ukrainian Culture was held at St. Anthony’s Parish Hall in Rama on November 10, hosted by the Rama Golden Jets.

Jennifer Fedun, from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC)- Yorkton branch, spoke to the gathering about the theme, Preservation of the Ukrainian Culture.

C a t h a y Wa g a n t a l l , Yo r k t o n - M e l v i l l e M P, brought greetings on behalf of the Government of Canada and shared a reflection on The Preservation of the Ukrainian Culture and Holodomor.

A banner of the 1932-33 genocide was unveiled and a Holodomor ceremony was held. All those present lit their candles in commemoration of this event and sang Eternal Memory in Ukrainian.

Wagantall was joined for the unveiling and the ceremony by the Opanasiuk family from the Ukraine.

The lighting of the Holodomor candle was performed by Cathay Wagantall, Yorkton-Melville MP and the Opanasiuk family, recent immigrants from the Ukraine, who also did the official unveiling of the 85th Anniversary banner of The Ukrainian Genocide of 1932-33. All those present lit their candles in commemoration of this event and sang Eternal Memory in Ukrainian.
