NASHI Fundraiser for Ukraine Maple Leaf House Everyone is following the news and the awful war taking place in Ukraine which is touching many lives close to home with Ukrainian ancestry, stated Heather Gawrelitza.

On March 4, the Global News televised a news report featuring NASHI vice-president Andrew Allsopp from Saskatoon. The news report talked about the Saskatoonbased charity NASHI that opened the Maple Leaf House in Lviv, Ukraine in 2015 as a home for girls escaping poor living conditions, abuse, and

human trafficking. The news report told about the 17 girls that were evacuating Ukraine and have since safely arrived in Poland.

Heather Gawrelitza from Preeceville reported that Andrew Allsopp and Marjorie Biccum are her uncle and aunt, and along with Theresa Petrowski of Preeceville and many others from Saskatchewan have been to the Maple Leaf House and know the good work being done by the NASHI charity.

“This charity is near and dear

to many of our family including our Baba Mary Petrowski, of Preeceville who has visited the Ukraine and still has family there.” If you would like to give support to our fellow Ukrainians, donations can be made through Gawrelitza and dropped off at Preeceville Agencies.

Gawrelitza also organized a fundraiser that was held on March 17 at the Golden West Hotel in Preeceville that sold 50/50 tickets, raffle tickets and featured fun game trivia.

“It was a great night with

approximately $1,500 being raised for the NASHI organization,” said Gawrelitza.

The community where the girls from Maple Leaf House in Ukraine had lived had not been attacked but the girls had been spending many nights in the dark, away from the windows with sounds of airraid sirens blaring. Allsopp described the anxieties of the girls as, “You take kids who have already been traumatized in life who are just starting to heal and you throw war at them.” The current goal was

for the girls to cross the border into Poland. Maple Leaf House is only 60 kilometres from the Polish border but the girls’ bus had been caught in long lineups of people trying to escape.

There has since been an update on the March 6 NASHI Our Children Facebook page that the girls have arrived safely in Poland and have been warmly welcomed. The situation on what happens next depends on the status and duration of the war, reports the NASHI Facebook page.

The girls consider the Maple Leaf House their home and that all of them are sisters even though most are not related.

The hope is for them to be able to return home to the Maple Leaf House in Ukraine but NASHI is prepared to provide the support to keep the girls together and move them to the Saskatoon area if the need arises. The girls are familiar with many people from the NASHI charity who have visited them in the Ukraine and kept in contact over the years.

Sturgis students acknowledged for winning Legion entries Students at the Sturgis Composite School from grades 1 to 12 were acknowledged with a certificate and prizes for their winning entries in the Norquay Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day poster, poems and essay contest.

The school presented

the winning entries with prizes on March 14. Over $450 in prize money was given out this year from the Norquay Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Winners in the elementary and high school divisions were presented prizes in the colour, black and white contest, and for

essay and poem entries.

In grades 4 to 6, colour poster contest, Makayla Johnson placed first and Lilly Kinneard placed second. In the black and white category, Bostin Smith placed first and Zaiden Rudachyk placed second. Jesse Beatty placed first in the

Real estate boom hits small town Saskatchewan As Canadians navigate uncertain times and soaring inflation, pressures from the economic turmoil have become a heavy burden on the nation.

Despite this, there are a few industries that seem to have dodged much of the national stress. With an array of personal reasons driving real estate sales, small town Saskatchewan realtors in particular are reporting a substantial increase in business.

Jodie Kowalyshyn of Community Insurance in Canora has been a licensed realtor since 2006. She said that 2021 was the busiest season she has ever seen over the span of her 15 years in the industry. “ N o r m a l l y, w e h a v e close to 40 properties

on the market,” said Kowalyshyn. “Currently we’re down to just 15 – and the demand is showing no signs of slowing down.

We’re expecting sales to take off even more once the weather changes and the snow melts.”

With a focus on Canora real estate, Kowalyshyn said the fastest selling homes are definitely those listed under $100,000.

“Just last week, we listed a smaller house in town. We posted a sign in the front yard, and by the next day – it was sold.”

Kowalyshyn said that while her clients are looking to Canora for a variety of reasons – the most popular are affordability and proximity to Yorkton.

“Many of our clients

are first-time home buyers who want to live in a small town, but still enjoy all of the city amenities within a short commute,” said Kowalyshyn. “We have a great little town with so many events and community development projects on the go that will serve residents – especially families with children.

We are also well-known for our high rate of senior citizens, and we are seeing quite a few properties come up for sale – like estate sales, or people who want to downsize to live with family or move into senior housing. Older people often tell us they have grown tired of the work involved with maintaining a house – like cutting grass or shovelling snow.

There are also a number of farmers in the area looking to retire and either sell all of their land or subdivide and sell parts they don’t want to manage anymore.

Unless a property is priced way too high, it won’t last long on our listings. It’s definitely a seller’s market right now.”

Another established l o c a l r e a l t o r, G l a d y s Secondiak of RE/MAX Bridge City Realty, said her properties are selling so fast, she can hardly keep up with the paperwork.

“I’ve been running s t e a d y. I w o r k s e v e n days a week. You’d think COVID-19 would have slowed things down, but actually, it has stirred buyers up. In all my years in this industry, 2021 was the busiest year yet.”

Secondiak said that a good portion of her buyers are out-of-province and it’s not uncommon for properties to be purchased sight unseen.

“I’ve seen a huge increase in impulse buyers,” said Secondiak. “A lot of people are telling me that they want to escape. They

are watching the news and they are frightened.

They are worried about economic depression and it has put them in survival mode. They want to be self-sustaining, so they are looking for ways they can live off the land. Acreages are the most in demand.

People are saying they want to plant their own vegetables and even look to buy full quarters of land so they can hunt and provide their own food.”

In a strange twist, Secondiak reported that small town Saskatchewan was also affected by the Ottawa “trucker freedom convoy.” “ We l l , w h e n p e o p l e started talking about the idea of Trudeau freezing bank accounts, they really began scrambling to put their cash and assets into real estate. When they looked across the country, they discovered the best prices were right here in Saskatchewan. These days, land is typically gone the minute it comes up – but only if it is priced right.”

commercial real estate hasn’t been quite as dramatic, she has observed a new trend emerging with young professionals.

“I’ve spoken with a number of real motivated and really skilled professionals who are looking to live the life of their dreams by owning their own commercial business. It seems as though the pandemic gave many people the time to reflect on their personal goals and ambitions. People are discovering that small town Saskatchewan has viable commercial venture opportunities that are otherwise completely unaffordable in larger cities. It’s so exciting for me to help support those folks that are no longer fulfilled by their employer or jobs and want to ‘be their own boss’.”

Secondiak added that S a s k a t c h e w a n ’s s m a l l town real estate market has seen its share of booms and busts, and there is no telling how long this hot market will last.

“The way things are going right now – I think this is great for our small communities. I would say for anyone considering selling a small house under $100,000 or more so $50,000 – the time to list is now. Of course, there are always unknowns – like the potential for interest rates to go up. But I do not see things slowing down at all throughout the summer.”

Canora/Sturgis RCMP activity report

By Sgt. Derek Friesen Canora RCMP Detachment The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 26 calls from March 10 to March 17, some of which included: three traffic collisions, two 911 Act, two failing to comply with conditions, one criminal harassment, six traffic offenses, one false alarm, three impaired operation, one Fire Prevention Act, three traffic offences and four other incidents.

Moose on the loose On March 10, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a report of a young moose on the loose in the downtown area of Canora.

A short time later the Canora Junior Elementary School reported the moose was on the south side of the school yard munching on some bushes. Police attended and assisted with scaring the moose off and patrolling the area to ensure children got home safe

after school.

Bedroom fire The Canora RCMP were dispatched on March 11 to assist the Canora Fire Department with a structure fire in Canora. The fire was contained to a bedroom and extinguished by the Fire Department. The cause of the fire is not suspicious.

Impaired driver The Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a report of an impaired driver all over the road on Highway No. 9 south of Canora on March 11. Police located the vehicle and arrested the female driver for impaired operation of a motor vehicle and for lying to police to conceal her identity. A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of methamphetamine and cannabis. The driver was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle by drug, driving while prohibited, obstructing a police officer, possession

of a methamphetamine, and identity fraud. The driver was remanded into custody.

Moose hanging out On March 14, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were called to assist with a moose taking a break on the porch of a house in Preeceville after nibbling on the bushes.

Eventually the moose left on its own accord and further police involvement was not required.

Officers assaulted At approximately 1:20 p.m. on March 16, Canora RCMP received a report of a possible impaired driver in an SUV on Highway No. 9.

Officers began searching for the driver.

Approximately 90 minutes later, an officer with Yorkton Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan located a vehicle matching the description of the SUV near the intersection of Highway No. 9 and Second Avenue East in Canora. The

officer stopped the vehicle and observed that the adult male driver was showing signs of impairment. The officer informed the driver he was under arrest. While attempting to handcuff him, the male assaulted the officer and attempted to disarm them.

Officers from the Canora RCMP arrived to assist. The male continued to threaten and assault the officers, even after they deployed intervention equipment, including a conducted energy weapon. With the assistance of six police officers and several Town of Canora employees, the scene was secured and the male was taken into custody. Two of the police officers received minor injuries. Some of the officers’ duty equipment was damaged by the male during the struggle.

The Canora Junior Elementary school enacted its hold and secure procedures during the arrest.

As a result of investigation, charges have been laid against the male for: assaulting a police officer, disarming a police officer, uttering threats, resisting/ obstructing a peace officer, operating a vehicle while impaired, and mischief under $5,000.

He was scheduled to appear in Yorkton Provincial Court on March 18.

Impaired and stuck On March 16, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a report of an impaired driver in the town of Buchanan. Police located the vehicle stuck in the snow. The driver of the vehicle was identified and police continue to investigate.

Wandering in traffic The Canora RCMP were dispatched to a complaint on March 17 of a male dressed in black walking into oncoming cars on Norway Road in Canora.

Police located the male on Fourth Street and arrested

him for being intoxicated in a public place. The male was held in cells until sober.

Threat On March 17, the Canora/Sturgis RCMP were dispatched to a complaint of a male threatening to kill their neighbour following a dispute in Canora. Police attended and arrested a male for uttering threats. Police continue to investigate.

Government policy sometimes makes little sense

LOOKING BACK...

A Decade Ago The Preeceville branch of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation paid tribute to avid hunters and fishermen at the annual awards banquet. ***** Members of the Studio Dance One Club attended the fifth annual Wadena Dance Kraze Invitational Dance competition in Wadena. Numerous groups who participated in the competition brought home medals for their performances. ***** The Sturgis Composite senior boy’s basketball team hosted Region 1A playoffs which they won and advanced to provincials to be held in Regina. ***** The Sturgis Curling Rink hosted its final curling bonspiel of the season. The Matt’s bonspiel had 21 rinks entered with the rink of Brian Peterson, Ivan Peterson, Elaine Meachem and Gail Peterson winning the spiel. ***** The Sturgis branch of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation organized and coordinated its second annual ice fishing derby at Crystal Lake. There were 81 participants who caught a total of 11 fish. Tom Babchishin caught the largest fish, a 6.02-pound pike. ***** The Family Resource Centre announced the winners of its family activity challenge. Karolyn Kosheluk, the coordinator for the centre, presented the winners with their winning prizes. ***** The wheelchair accessible playground equipment concept would become a reality later in the summer of 2012. ***** After the resignation of Saskatchewan Liberal Party leader Ryan Bater, Greg Gallagher, a long-time Liberal activist, was announced as the interim party leader.

It would be nice if there was consistency in the approach of government on issues.

You will not always agree with, or support a p o l i t i c a l v i e w, b u t those who do more than rail against a party they d o n ’t s u p p o r t , w i l l a t least recognize we elect those who tend to do what they feel is best for the future of the country. And that vision can be quite different from party-to-party, which is why we have such heated debates.

At present the federal Liberal party has its political eye set rather firmly on the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Canada moving forward in hopes of addressing what they see as the human impact causing climate change.

Of course many readers here will be shaking their heads that climate change is a false reading of data at best, and a flat out conspiracy

having been created for some nefarious reason, but there is mounting science that something is going on. Since we d o n ’t e x a c t l y h a v e a n alternative to living on this planet we probably should be looking at how best we might help nature on this one.

The Liberals have hung their hats on the carbon tax as a way to get people to undertake better practices to reduce emissions. People do tend to react when something hits them in the pocketbook, so the idea has some merit that if they are taxed they’ll make better decisions in terms of what they use and do in terms of things

creating greenhouse gases.

But, anything with the word tax is never particularly popular, and the carbon tax is much-hated by many Canadians.

That said, it is an effort on behalf of the Liberals.

But, then turn the page to another day and the system in another area is stalling science being available in Canada.

In late February, the European Union approved use of a feed additive which can reduce methane emissions from cattle by 30 per cent or more.

Livestock, in particular cattle are definitely methane emitters, and

anything that can help agriculture be less of an issue in that regard should be applauded.

But, here in Canada, the product may not be on the market for years because Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency have classified the additive as a veterinary drug.

This is one of those stumbling blocks that has long escaped me, why the science in one country is basically ignored in another. In this case the EU is not somewhere with questionable regulations. In fact, generally they are more stringent in regulating farming.

And in Canada we have a government clearly wanting this country to be ‘greener.’ It seems a perfect opportunity for some gentle persuasion or legislation if needed, to provide livestock producers access to have less impact in terms of methane emissions.

The joy of starting seeds By now, some of you may have started some seeds.

What a lift for the soul to see those tender little shoots opening! I remember how my Mom loved starting her seedlings, especially tomatoes. She planted them in cutdown milk cartons, each labelled and all recorded with variety and date planted. They began their lives in a cozy spot under the bed in our spare room and were checked daily or even twice a day. When they sprouted, they were moved onto the windowsills. Mom lovingly checked these babies every day, turning them around so that they would all get equal sun. If you have ever started tomatoes, you will know about their fresh, distinct aroma.

Whenever I smell that delicious smell of tomato plants, I am instantly back at my Mom’s side, and can see her beautiful smile of excitement as a new season began!

One concern was damping off. Damping off is a fungal disease that causes the seedling to rot at the base of the plant or in the root. This is a disappointing sight for gardeners! There can be several culprits to damping off: soil that is too wet, soil that is cold, planting our seeds too deep, or if humidity is very high. The spores of the dastardly fungi that cause damping off live in the soil, and once they have affected the plant, there is nothing that can be done.

But we can still do our best to save our plants from damping off. We must be sure to use good potting soil

The Garden Grapevine that drains well. We should try to plant our seeds close to the top of the container, (that means we should fill the container with soil almost to the top) so that when the seedlings come up, air is moving around them. We shouldn’t crowd our seedlings. We must take care not to overwater the seedlings, and should water early in the day so that they are dry by evening when temperatures in our homes cool down. And, very important, we should be sure there is good air circulation. A small fan placed a safe distance away from the plants will keep air currents moving. There are also fungicides available, but remember, these can do nothing to revive a plant that has already succumbed to damping off.

And of course, whatever you plant, record the data in your gardener’s notebook. The other day I found one of Mom’s garden notebooks. What a delight! How special

and interesting it was to read through, seeing her neat handwriting listing how many tomatoes were planted on a certain day, and when they came up. I made a cup of tea and savored reading the notebook, and once again Mom was with me. Our notebooks are great records for every season, because even though we think we’ll remember gardening details, it’s easy to forget!

When Mom had tomatoes that did exceptionally well, she often saved the seeds. This was done by picking ripe fruit, at its peak or even a bit beyond when it was starting to get soft, and ‘fermenting’ the seed. What does this mean? It is the method of cleaning and separating the seed from the gel sac that surrounds it. Mom always used to do this by cutting the tomato and carefully removing the seedy pulp. She would spread it on a paper towel on a plate and leave it on the counter. In time the gel sac rots and dries up, leaving behind the tomato seed.

When the tomato seeds were dry, Mom would carefully scrape up the seeds, put them in an envelope, label it, and store the seeds in a dark, dry space until next spring.

I have read about this process being done in a jar, but I am familiar with Mom’s method, and it always worked just fine. Gardeners always have a favorite way to do things!

War breaks out in Ukraine and there MAY be an oil shortage, gas prices soar. The working poor can’t afford to

put gas in their vehicles to go to work, oil companies make billions.

This causes inflation and the working poor struggle

to put food on their tables, corporate business makes billions.

The government puts up interest rates to curb inflation

and the working poor struggle to keep a roof over their heads, banks and rich people make billions.

Am I the only one who

thinks this ultra-capitalist system is not working for us?

Roadside assistance lacks in providing assistance If you think having Roadside Assistance means that you will have someone come out to help you in case of an emergency IT DOES NOT. The evening of March 8, 2022, I was travelling home just before 9 p.m.

There had been wind that day and there were some drifts on the roads, but they were manageable, until just over a mile from my house I hit a larger drift where the heavier snow pulled me to the right. Since the road just

behind the drift was icy, I was unable to recover, and I gently slid into the ditch.

I pay for OnStar roadside assistance, so I pressed the button and called for help. After getting information the operator said that they would text with the tow truck arrival time. At 9:20 pm. I got a message that due to a labour shortage it was taking longer to find a rescuer. Just before 10, OnStar called and said the closest tow truck operator declined and the other

ones called said that I was too far away. I asked if they had called a local towing company, thinking that they had overlooked a local business and the operator said “Yes, they declined the job.”

OnStar said that they only thing that they could do now was call the authorities for me. I declined saying that I first would phone local farmers and if I got nowhere that I would call the police.

I made several calls to farmers and did not get

an answer so I called a local towing company to see why they would leave someone stranded in the middle of the countryside during winter in freezing weather. I got the answer that he did not know the circumstances of the job and he had some things to do that night for himself and that he had a couple of jobs in the morning, so it was up to GM to find someone else.

The other business owners took similar attitudes that my safety was

someone else’s responsibility and that it was too far. I would think that a tow truck driver gets paid for their time as well as their gas so how far is too far when a life is in jeopardy. It was only -15 C at that time but by morning it was minus -27 C. I did manage to contact a wonderful local farmer who got up and came out to help me. The actual time it took to pull me out was about 5 minutes but the farmer had to drive many miles and took up

time which he would not let me reimburse him for.

Because of the generosity of a neighbour, I got home safe. I always thought of towing services as an emergency service and treated them with the same respect as fire departments and police services. Yet apparently the local towing services do not have the same respect for people in emergency situations.

By Wes Bloom Like most people in the world, I was totally stunned a couple of weeks ago to hear of the recent Russian invasion of the Ukraine. To be perfectly honest, I never really thought it would happen.

Like so many folks, I threw my hands up in the air in absolute shock and utter disbelief. How could this even happen in 2022?

Unbelievable. And impossible. Or so I thought. Yet it happened, nonetheless.

And there didn’t seem to be much the world could do to stop it, at the time.

It made us all realize how helpless and vulnerable we are, and how inadequate we were in the moment.

What’s most disturbing to me is that there is

yet another ‘World-Bully’ alive and living on the planet today - Vladimir Putin - the likes of which have not been seen since Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi dictator, who was ultimately captured, convicted of unbelievable war crimes, and finally hung on December 30, 2006.

Perhaps, like me, you’re left standing there, scratching your head trying to understand how one single, power hungry bully, could cause so much pain and suffering for so many people in the world today. It’s not possible for him to justify such blatant disrespect and disregard for human life and suffering.

As a result of this unprovoked Russian

invasion, things have become so unbearable for the Ukrainian people, that nearly 3 million souls have fled to neighboring towns and countries for refuge. Before February 24, 2022, when Russia invaded, the Ukraine was home to more than 43 m i l l i o n p e o p l e . To d a y, terrified men, women, children, and seniors are fleeing for their very lives - many, with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. Imagine, if you will, having to run for your very life. Leaving behind everything that you worked so hard for all of your life. Heading into a dark, uncertain future.

All because of one sick, demented, and crazy man.

How is it possible, that a dictator - a tyrant really, and a monster - could even think that such behavior would be acceptable in the eyes of the world?

Thank goodness that the Ukrainian people - at least those who are able - are standing up to the terrorist Putin and are determined, against incredible odds, to never give up. Ukrainian p r e s i d e n t , Vo l o d y m y r Zelensky, stands tall and defiant in the face of such a formidable enemy - the Russian ‘Bear.’ He, and his courageous countrymen have become heroes in the midst of this devastating nightmare they find themselves in.

And in so doing, they have become an inspiration to those of us who

fear bullies, dictators, confrontation, and war.

What they have taught us is, that no matter the cost, i t ’s b e s t t o s t a n d u p t o the bullies of this world.

What Russian president Vladimir Putin failed to understand was the resolve, determination, and incredible strength of the Ukrainian people who are not about to lie down and die without a fight. What he failed also to recognize was that the world, even in the midst of a paralyzing and crushing pandemic, would rise up to stand beside the Ukrainian people and offer them much needed help and support.

I was ‘taken aback’ a short time ago as I viewed a somewhat concerning Internet meme. It showed

a photo of the elder Clint Eastwood sitting quietly on his front porch in the cool of the evening, drinking a beer. The photo was taken from one of his most recent films called Gran Torino, and warned: “Wait until the people who just want to be left alone get involved.”

The world is now involved - reluctantly - in this tragic, senseless battle a g a i n s t t y r a n n y. I f t h e Ukrainian struggle and people have taught us anything about this war against their freedom, it would be that it’s time to send a message to the bullies of this world: “We’re DONE. So be warned. And beware!”

That’s how I see it at least. From where I stand.

Busted! SGI’s top five insurance fraud cases SGI’s Special Investigation Unit investigates wild and wacky insurance claims, many of which turn out not to be true. Insurance is there when you need it, but some people try to get it even when they don’t.

Unfortunately some people try to defraud insurance providers, according to a release. That’s w h e r e S G I ’s S p e c i a l Investigation Unit (SIU) comes in. In 2021, SIU busted hundreds of people

attempting to make fraudulent claims, saving the company around $6 million. This important work helps keep insurance rates low for honest customers.

With that said, here are some of the top insurance frauds from 2021.

1. Running into an old friend A claimant (let’s call him Jacob*) said his vehicle was broadsided after Deb* drove her vehicle through a stop sign. Deb and Jacob both claimed

t h e y d i d n ’t k n o w e a c h o t h e r. P o l i c e i n i t i a l l y charged Deb, but further investigation by police revealed the crash may have been staged. SIU obtained video of the crash which showed Jacob slowed to a stop, giving Deb enough time to speed up and crash into the side of his vehicle. The video evidence, along with downloaded vehicle data, showed the crash was indeed set up.

The investigation also revealed Deb and Jacob

knew each other.

The claim was denied, saving SGI $7,000.

2. Technology to the rescue Sheila* claimed her brand new 2021 Camaro was stolen. Police worked with OnStar to locate the vehicle, which was found with a banged-up front end. Sheila filed a claim with SGI, but her story got a bit murky when she admitted she still had both key fobs, since the vehicle couldn’t be started

without them. Once Sheila was told SGI would collect technical information from OnStar, she decided to withdraw her claim.

Total savings? $13,000.

3. Into the drink Barb* said her daughter Amanda* borrowed her vehicle when Amanda got into a collision. Barb claimed it was raining at the time of the crash, and when Amanda swerved to avoid hitting a deer on a gravel road, she slid into the ditch and into a

nearby dugout. The story seemed plausible at first.

But an SIU investigator went to see the scene for themselves. As it turns out, the gravel road wasn’t gravel, and the dugout was actually a town reservoir hundreds of feet from the paved roadway.

The vehicle would have had to have been driven through a town park before entering the reservoir.

Ukrainian Dance pays tribute to culture Members of the Barveenok Ukrainian Dance Club are proud of its heritage and honour the ancestors by keeping the tradition of Ukrainian heritage dance going in the local communities.

Eric Sliva is the club’s instructor and teaches classes every Tuesday at the Sturgis Multi-Complex with 18 students. Out of the 18 dancers seven are beginners, five are returning dancers and six are adult dancers.

Eva Romanchuk performed a solo dance to a Volyn during the Tavria 30th annual Dance Festival in Regina.

Some of those students performed at the Tavria 30th annual Dance Festival in Regina on March 1113 at the Performing Arts C e n t e r. M e m b e r s w e r e judged on their performances and a score was given the groups.

Maycee Johnson, Lily Beatty and Lindy Romanchuk performed a Transcarpathian dance which scored them 89 per cent and silver medals. They also danced a Poltava dance where they were scored 84, good enough for bronze medals.

Allie Babiuk and Eva Romanchuk danced a Hutzul for an 89 per cent, earning silver medals.

The duet also performed a Bukovina dance where they scored 85 and received silver medals for that performance.

Eva Romanchuk danced a solo to a Volyn dance that scored an 85 per cent and a silver medal.

The club will be hosting its spring dance on A p r i l 2 4 a t t h e S t u rg i s Composite School. This will be the first time for the event after a two-year break due to COVID-19.

“The dancers and parents are all really excited

to be able to get back to performing in front of an audience,” said Sandra Johnson, club president.

“Throughout the break, the dancers had still been able to attend classes with video performances recorded for competitions. We currently have 12 children and six adults enrolled in the club. Twoyears ago would have been the club’s 40 th anniversary but we were unable to host any event in acknowledgement. We are hoping this year to acknowledge this milestone.”

Lillian Steranko was the original founding member of the Stenen Barveenok Ukrainian Dance Club. In 1980, the dance school was formed with Steranko as chairperson; Maureen Lisoway, secretary and treasurer; Sharon Secundiak as costume coordinator and Lorna Brodziak as advisor.

As the years went by the dance club performed at the Mother’s Day concert but also participated in dance competitions and even sang Ukrainian songs and danced at a local talent show.

Steranko, and to enhance the language program other traditional Ukrainian customs were introduced that included Ukrainian dancing. It started out with small enrolment but proved very popular and led to the organization being formed.

Formal Ukrainian dancing began in 1979 with the assistance of Lorna

Brodziak, Steranko and Marianne Washburn. The dancers performed for the Stenen Christmas concert a n d a t a M o t h e r ’s D a y program in the spring.

The club still performs

at local senior homes, local events, competitions and at the annual spring concert where they pay tribute to founding members and Ukrainian culture.

On March 14, Federal Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit announced the 2022 Crop Insurance enrolment deadline is extended to April 14, 2022. Due to logistical challenges because of the ongoing supply-chain issues posed by the pandemic, there was a delay in the delivery of the 2022 Crop Insurance packages to producers’ addresses.

These challenges occurred after the packages left the Saskatchewan Crop

Insurance Corporation (SCIC) on February 25, 2022.

“Prairie producers continue to inspire us with their resiliency and ability to rise to the challenges of the past year,” said MarieClaude Bibeau, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “Risk management programs like crop insurance are essential to help producers prepare for the future, and we want to ensure they have the time they need to make decisions that are right for their business.”

4. Car of his dreams For many people, it’s a dream to own a vintage muscle car, and for this would-be fraudster, it will s t a y t h a t w a y. J a m e s * claimed his classic car was stolen but wasn’t able

to produce any receipts or financial information related to the vehicle. He also couldn’t supply any photos of the vehicle from the past 15 years. The only photo James did share with SGI turned out to be a stock image from a vehicle in the U.S. Not to mention - neighbours and the autobody shop staff who had supposedly worked on the

car had no recollection of the vehicle (and it’s not the kind of car you forget!).

That busted claim saved SGI more than $20,000.

5. Doesn’t add up Julie* filed a claim, saying her rental property had been robbed, and tens of thousands of dollars worth of property was stolen. There were a few red flags right off the bat. Julie

had only bought insurance two weeks prior to the alleged theft. She also didn’t have any receipts or documents to prove she ever owned the stolen items. A financial assessment was done, proving Julie didn’t have the income to support the large purchases.

SIU also visited the rental property and determined it wasn’t big enough to

house everything that was reported stolen. The evidence stacked up quickly a g a i n s t J u l i e ’s c l a i m , which ultimately was denied.

Busted.

This investigation saved SGI $70,000.

Senior boys have successful basketball season The Preeceville Panther senior boys basketball team members have faced an uphill battle to the get to regionals and possibly HOOPLA. The team faced many challenges through its season but quickly came together as a team and gained value experience on and off the floor with each game they played during the season,

stated Jeremy Mattison, head coach.

Going into the conference playoffs held in Porcupine they were ranked number four in the league. The first game they took on Kelvington and easily defeated them with a 95-35 score. The win set up Preeceville to face off against Porcupine o n t h e f o l l o w i n g d a y.

“The game was fast and well played on both ends and took a lot out of the team to come up with a win of 67-63 final score,” said Mattison.

After the win the team got a well earned rest for a few hours before the final matchup that was against a strong Norquay/Sturgis combination team.

“The boys were still

exhausted from giving it their all in the previous game but played hard and left it all on the floor.

Norquay/Sturgis got off to an early start in the first period but after three quick three-point shots we

were back in the game and it pumped up the boys. We were tied at halftime and the third period saw us up by 11 points. In the fourth period we just ran out of gas late in the period and they skirted past us for a

75-70 win,” said Mattison.

The Panthers were scheduled to host Regionals on March 18 and 19 with the opportunity to move on to provincials. The results were not available at press time.

Prairie Ice wins two playoff rounds with team effort The Prairie Ice Female U15A girls hockey team has started the playoffs in the Sask Female Hockey League on a roll, winning four straight games to sweep the first two rounds.

But the Ice knew right from the first game in Canora against Estevan on February 27 that they were in for a battle, according to head coach Ryan Hauber.

“They had a great goalie,” said Hauber. “We outshot them double in the first game but they still took us to triple overtime.”

Marlee Sedor of Yorkton scored the winner for the ice about five minutes into the third overtime period for a 3-2 victory.

“As a coach, you get more grey hairs in a game like that,” admitted Hauber.

“I just try to keep the girls on an even keel even if they’re tired, focus on getting the next shot on goal.”

Winning a game like that

The teams split four minor penalties.

“Balcarres has a really strong defence,” said Hauber. “In game one we started really well, but they fought back and tied it. We were fortunate enough to score the winner.”

While game one had it’s first goal in the first minute of the first period, game two went scoreless for better than 56 minutes.

But just when it was looking like overtime was inevitable, Jessee Kopelchuk of Canora scored on a shot from the point with just over three minutes left. Camryn Nelson of Preeceville added a valuable insurance goal just over a minute later for a 2-0 final score. Assists came from: Alaina Roebuck of Buchanan, Jessica Madsen of Theodore and Marlee Sedor of Yorkton.

Hauber was not entirely pleased with his team’s performance in the early part of the game.

“There could have been goals for us sooner. We didn’t move the puck like we can in the first two periods, but we did much better in the third.”

“We’re getting goals from just about all the girls, someone different seems to be contributing every night.

against The Parkland Fire, based out of Melville, who finished first in the division ahead of the Ice. “They have really strong forwards and a big defence, their goaltending can be weak,” said Hauber.

“They’re a tough team to play against.”

BROWN - Mrs. Anne Brown, wife of the late Walter Brown of Canora, formerly of Preeceville and the Endeavour district passed away on March 9, 2022, at the Theodore Health Centre. She was 93 years of age. Anne Brown was born on March 11, 1928, at Lestock, Saskatchewan. She was the second child of Steve and Elizabeth (nee Veresh) Kovacs. She moved to the Endeavour area with her parents at 3 years of age and attended Veterans School. Anne went to work at an early age doing housework and farm chores. She was also busy helping her dad at the sawmill, cutting cords of wood. She later worked at the Golden West Hotel in Preeceville. Anne married Walter Brown on October 25, 1946. They lived and worked together on the family farm for 46 years. During this time, they had two children, Earl and Janice. Anne enjoyed baking, cooking, gardening, tending her flowers and she stayed busy with these things as well as the chores that needed to be done on the farm. Anne and Walter took in foster children and over time had 19 children come to live with them. Anne always enjoyed having the children around. After retiring, Anne was a member of the Golden Age Club in Endeavour where she was secretary and later, president. She was a member for 27 years. Anne moved to Preeceville on August 29, 1992. Anne stayed busy spending time with family and friends. She loved reciting poetry and would take part in many functions by reciting an appropriate poem. She loved attending church and would travel to Rockford and Endeavour to attend. On July 9, 2014, Anne moved to Canora where she made new friends and memories. Anne was predeceased by her husband, Walter; mother, Elizabeth Kovacs; father, Steve Kovacs; sister, Goldina; brothers, Steve and Ernie Kovacs. SCHUTTE - Orville Schutte passed away peacefully on March 3, 2022, at the age of 87 years in the Preeceville Personal Care Home. Orville was born March 15, 1934, to parents Leander and Florence (Guy) Schutte of Rockford. He was raised on the family farm and schooled in Rockford School to grade 8. After his parents passed on, he continued to live on the farm. Orville worked full time caring for his herd of cattle, which he had great pride in and also his love for horses, he always had a team around. His trucks were always kept spotless. Over the years, he could be seen with his brother going for an afternoon drive around the country. Friday was a must for mail and groceries and a visit around town. Family was important by keeping in touch by phone, certain days for different ones, they could expect a call. In earlier years he was always ready to help anyone, family or neighbours, to push their yards after a snowfall. Orville was predeceased by his Mom and Dad; sister Doreen and brother-in-law Stanley Buchinski; brother Ronald Schutte; brother-in-law Darryl Holms. He is survived by brothers: Lawrence (Dora) Schutte, Morris (Sylvia) Schutte; sisters: Myrtle (Ervin) Lindholm, Ethel (Steve) Holmes; sister-in-law Vera Schutte, plus numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

The Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at the Chapel of Preeceville Funeral Home with Crystal Bailey, Certified Celebrant officiating. A eulogy and poem were shared

by Katey Darr and Kelsey Kaban. The interment followed in the Rockford Community Cemetery with Barry Lindholm, Garry Schutte, Kal Schutte, Lyle Schutte, Larry Buchinski and Blair Ochitwa serving as the casket bearers. Spring and its many blessings

By Kaare Askildt Spring was able to come out for a couple of hours to tease us before Father Wi n t e r c a l l e d M o t h e r Nature to cancel spring.

Father Winter told Mother Nature that he wasn’t ready for spring yet as he still had lots of snow, a couple of blizzards and some black ice to get rid of. Mother Nature reluctantly agreed to put spring on hold for now, CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

When we had the farm we had cows, sheep, pigs, in an effort to be self sufficient regarding meat. We also had a few horses for riding.

While on the farm I read an article about an ignorant, self proclaimed protector of cattle. He suggested that the grocery stores should grow (I’m not kidding) the meat in the back of the store instead of slaughtering live animals.

Mother Nature always provides spring with plenty of sunshine to make our gardens grow. Spring is also the time of the year for newborn calves, lambs and piglets. We used to get busy at springtime on the farm, raising turkeys, geese, broilers and laying hens for eggs. Of course, we would grow our own vegetables including a lot of potatoes and tomatoes. Marion and I have already made a pact that we will come back as farmers in our next life, and I would learn how to properly ride a horse. When we were riding together, she would always try to remind me that I should make sure that I synchronize my body movement with the rising up and down of the horse’s back, instead of lowering my butt when the horse’s back comes up, causing a painful “midair” collision.

Ole and Sven were discussing the good old times

while enjoying their hamburgers at Moe’s Bottoms Up Bar and Grille accompanied by Moe’s lager.

“My grandfather told me a funny story about when he was a farmer,” said Ole. “Would you like to hear it?”

“Go ahead,” said Sven, “it better be good!”

“It was a beautiful spring day, and my grandfather had found one of his cows drinking water from a small stream by a lush green meadow not far from the barn. Grandpa had brought his milking stool and a pail and started to milk her while she was guzzling water. Two engineering buddies were hiking on the path alongside the stream and stopped to look at grandpa.

They asked him what he was doing, and grandpa told them that he had grabbed the opportunity to milk his cow while she was drinking water.

The engineers had a puzzled look on their faces, so grandpa asked them if they were from the city, which they confirmed and said that they were engineers and just amazed at what grandpa was doing. They had heard of milking cows but did not know how it worked.

Grandpa was an enterprising kind of guy and asked them if they wanted to try a cup each of fresh warm milk for a quarter each, as he produced a couple of tin cups. Both engineers

produced a quarter and really enjoyed the fresh milk, saying that they had never tasted milk like that before in their lives.

They told him that they were engineers, and while looking at the cow, they said they would like to get a more thorough understanding of how this milk production worked. One engineer said that they had already perceived that water goes in the front, and milk comes out of the bottom spouts shortly after, and what they would like to learn is what happens in between. Grandpa looked at them and suggested for $200 he would sell them the cow, and then they could do all the research they wanted.

The engineers had gladly given him the money and walked away leading the cow.

Grandpa followed at a distance behind them. It was a hot spring day, and after having walked for a couple of hours, they decided to stop by the stream and quench their thirst with some more of that delicious milk. One of them led the cow to the stream and she started to drink at once. The other one knelt and started pulling on the udder, but no milk was coming out.

He yelled at the other one that was by the head of the cow and suggested to him that the water intake was obviously not sufficient

to produce any milk and suggested that the head man should put the cow’s head deeper in the water.

He dunked the cow’s head deep into the water covering her mouth, nose, and all. The cow panicked and some diarrhea shot out from her rear end. The udder engineer shouted to the head man not to go so deep as the cow was drawing up mud…!”

There was a brewer ’s convention in town, and four the CEOs from different companies ventured into Moe’s Bottoms Up Bar and Grille. They all sat at the bar and Moe asked them what they would like to drink.

“I’ll have a Budweiser, the King of Beers!” said the Anheuser Busch CEO. “Please bring me a Coors, which is brewed with pure Rocky Mountain Spring Water!” said the Coors CEO. “I’ll have a Heineken,” said the Heineken CEO, “Heineken is Lager at its best!”

“And I’ll just have a glass of water,” said The Guinness CEO. The other three looked with puzzlement at The Guinness CEO, and one of them asked, “ Yo u ’ r e d r i n k i n g water??”

“Yes indeed,” said The Guinness CEO, “if you three aren’t drinking beer, then neither am I!”

This is the time of year when truckers and shippers must begin reducing loads on secondary highways in Saskatchewan. All secondary highways return to regulation weights, which will help prevent damage to these roads this spring.

“At various times of the year, weight restrictions are put in place on some

highways as a measure to prevent damage to the surface and roadbeds,” Highways Minister Fred Bradshaw said in a release.

“As the warmer weather rolls in, some roads can become susceptible to soft spots and surface cracks.”

When the mild temperatures arrive, winter weights are removed. Effective at 12:01 a.m., Tuesday, March 15, any existing winter weights were to be removed and revert to regulation weight.

2022 Spring Road Bans Spring road restrictions are used by the province and rural municipalities (RM) to mitigate damage to infrastructure. Typically, these road restrictions start in March in the southwest and move in an east and northern direction. These restrictions remain in place for approximately six weeks or 42 days.

The road bans reduce allowable weights on RM roads and secondary weight provincial highways by 10 to 15 per cent and typically last about six weeks.

Nine month primary weights Saskatchewan is unique because of its nine-month primary weight highways. As a large province with considerable difference in climate in the north and

the south, there are different dates for when nine-month primary weights are in effect.

In the north of the province, the annual weight increase on the nine-month primary highways is from July 1 to March 31 of the following year. In the south of the province, the annual weight increase on the ninemonth primary highways will occur earlier, from June 15 to March 15 of the following year. This helps sustain road conditions in the south, where spring thaw occurs earlier.
