Voters make voices heard across region in election Voters across the area spoke loudly for change when they voted in this year’s November 9 rural and urban elections.

In the Town of Preeceville, Ralph Ager unseated incumbent Garth Harris by a vote of 205 (Ager) to 80 (Harris) in the mayor race. There were a total of 287 votes cast for mayor.

Councillors who kept their seats were: Darin Newton (225 votes), Sheldon Luciw and Stacey Strykowski each received 212 votes, and Welma Bartel with 159 votes.

Newcomers to council will

be Florian Balawyder (236) and Jesse Nelson (202).

There were 287 votes cast for council.

Lorelei Karcha, Town administrator, was the returning officer. Council members will take their oath to office at the first meeting in November.

In the Town of Sturgis, Don Olson was elected mayor by acclamation prior to the election.

Councillors who kept their seats were: Daniel Wasylenchuk (131 votes), Jennifer Bayer (129), Perry Keller (125) and

Dale Bashforth (120).

New to council are Aileen Lubiniecki (137) and Randy Sommerville (112). There were 195 ballets cast with Amanda Masley as returning officer. Council will take its oath to office at the first meeting held in November.

In the Rural Municipality of Preeceville, newcomer Johnny Petryshyn unseated incumbent Reeve Rick Pristie by a vote of 215 (Petryshyn) to 197 (Pristie). There were 419 ballets cast for reeve and councillor positions.

In Division 2, Dale Parkin received 61 votes to defeat Peter Ivanochko who received 39 votes.

In Division 3, Linda Blender received 36 voters to squeak out a win over Lawrence Hamilton, who received 34 votes.

In Division 5, Reg Yaremchuk received 47 votes to defeat Merle Mastrachuk who received 13 votes.

Lisa Peterson, administrator, was the returning officer for the election. Council will take its oath to office

at the first meeting held in November.

Voting for councillors took place at different locations, Div. 1 and 3 was held in Sturgis. Div. 2 and 4 was held in Preeceville and Div. 5 and 6 was held in Endeavour.

Voting for the reeve position was held at all three locations.

Division 4 and 6 councillors were not up for election.

Reg Strand is the Division 4 councillor and Gabe Goodsman is the Division 6 councillor.

In the Rural Municipality of Hazel Dell, Don

Holowachuk defeated Randy Harriman for the reeve position by a vote of 117 to 99.

All councillors were elected by acclamation, Allan Kreshewski in Div. 2, Keith Galbraith, Div. 4 and Brent Elmy, Div. 6.

Councillors not up for election were, Dallas Chornomitz in Div.1. and Colin Redman, Div, 3.

Voting took place at the Hazel Dell Community Hall and council will take its oath to office at the first meeting held in November.

COVID-19: additional Public Health measures announced The expansion of mandatory masking in indoor public spaces and a curfew on alcohol sales in licensed establishments will be in effect as of November 16 for 28 days, then subject to review by Saskatchewan’s chief medical health officer, in an effort to return to basics to prevent transmission, according to a release.

“New measures announced this week and those to be considered in the weeks to come will still be based on the fundamentals of physical distancing, staying home when you are sick and masking to protect yourself and others,” said Paul Merriman, health minister. “Now is the time for all residents, businesses and organizations to get back to basics. Re-commit to proven public health measures and return to the standards shown to work in the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan.”

Back to basics While COVID-19 has shown that it will take advantage of any opportunity, the fundamentals of personal protective measures and the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan guidelines based on those measures have been demonstrated to work in preventing transmission. Every Saskatchewan resident has

a personal responsibility to make public spaces safe from COVID-19 transmission, so that essential services including health care and school, can continue.

“Over the past nine months, we have seen periods of extremely low transmission and periods of unacceptably high transmission here in Saskatchewan,” said Dr. Saqib Shahab, Saskatchewan chief medical health officer.

“This has not been determined by the virus; it has been determined by the actions of individuals making conscious decisions to follow best public health practices.”

All businesses and organizations must review the ReOpen Saskatchewan Plan for their respective sector guidelines and make any required changes in order to abide by them completely. These guidelines are enforceable under the public health order.

In the event that the public health order applies a more stringent standard (ie. masking), the public health order supersedes the guidance document.

All residents are required to abide by the basics of COVID-19 prevention, “Maintain physical distancing and wear a mask when you are outside the home; wash your hands frequently;

stay home if you are sick.” A significant number of cases in the province are as a result of people going to school, work and participating in activities when they have been symptomatic.

Mandatory masking extended Mandatory masking in indoor public places will be extended to all Saskatchewan communities with populations of 5,000 people or greater, including Yorkton.

This includes the censuses metropolitan areas, the neighbouring communities or municipalities, situated around the largest urban centres of Saskatoon, Regina and Prince Albert. Due to their proximity to the urban centres and high rate of retail, workplace and service integration, they will be included even if their independent populations are less than 5,000 residents.

The list of the 59 communities and what is deemed an indoor public space is at http://www.saskatchewan.ca/ masks. This is in addition to Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert.

The list of public indoor spaces may be amended for clarity; however, “if you are in a community with a mandatory mask order and are unsure if any location qualifies as an indoor public

space, defer to wearing the mask, choose the option that promotes public safety.”

These are non-medical masks. Information on masks and how to use them properly is at http://www.saskatchewan.ca/masks.

• Masking in school settings is described in the back to school plans as set out by the respective school divisions.

Health officials continue to strongly recommend all residents wear a non-medical mask anywhere outside the home as an additional measure to reduce the transmission of COVID-19, continued the release.

Enforcement of mandatory masking is permitted under The Public Health Act, 1994; however, compliance through education is the primary preference of public health. Public health will closely monitor compliance and encourage all individuals, businesses and organizations to abide by the masking order to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

Enforcement options will be considered based on observed

compliance with the order.

Alcohol service curfew All Saskatchewan restaurants and licensed establishments (bars, taverns, nightclubs) will be required to stop serving alcohol by 10 p.m. and consumption must end by 11 p.m. There are no exceptions for private events or outdoor serving spaces.

Safe Schools Plan – Level 3 While transmission within school settings has been limited, it is recommended that all school divisions move to level three in their back to school plans for high schools with 600 students or more. Under the Safe Schools Plan, level three is to reduce in-class learning at www.saskatchewan.ca/ government/health-careadministration-and-provider-resources/treatmentprocedures-and-guidelines/ emerging-public-healthissues/2019-novel-coronavirus/safe-schools-plan.

Updates to for fitness, hookah Fitness facilities may continue to operate under the Re-Open Saskatchewan guidelines but all aerobic group fitness activities (ie spin classes, class circuit training, aquasize) are limited to a maximum of eight participants.

Group aerobic activities

are permitted only if participants can be three metres apart throughout the duration of the activity, as required by the current Re-Open Saskatchewan guideline.

Individual aerobic activities (ie treadmill, stationary bike, lane swimming) are permitted if all required equipment is properly distanced according to the Re-Open Saskatchewan guidelines.

As an activity of increased transmission risk, all hookah and waterpipe services are now disallowed. Hookah/waterpipe locations may also be licensed establishments and restaurants. They may continue to act as licensed establishments and restaurants, according to the guidelines for those respective businesses.

Also added to the ReOpen Saskatchewan Plan are Arena Facility Guidelines, and updates to the Sports and Activity, Performing Arts, and Transportation guidelines.

Former Norquay resident launches first book at 93 They say it’s never too late to make a dream come true. That is certainly the case with 93 year-old former Norquay resident, William (Bill) Shymkiw who has recently published his first volume of short stories entitled The Sun Will Rise Tomorrow.

During a phone interview from his current home in Olds, Alberta, Shymkiw explained, “All of the stories are based on my own personal belief system…that there is always hope in a new day, we must keep looking forward, and we must trust that tomorrow will be good.”

As a one-room schoolhouse teacher turned high

school principal, family man, and farmer, Shymkiw enjoyed the first 70 years of his life in the Norquay area. In 1995, he and his wife moved to Alberta to slow down and enjoy the quiet life. In time, his rural Saskatchewan roots would serve as a backdrop for many of what have been called his tender and relatable narratives. Shymkiw’s collection dives into locations all around the world, along with many set in and around his hometown.

William (Bill) Shymkiw c e l e b ra t e d h i s 9 3 rd birthday at his home in Olds, Alberta. explained Shymkiw, describing the story as a tragedy that evolves to a deepening of the relationship with his grandfather through the gift of a bicycle.

“Who Am I?” offers Shymkiw “is a love

story featuring a Jewish girl who graduates from high school and boards a train to Winnipeg. All is going according to plan, until she falls off the train.

Shymkiw further mentioned a story set in Kamsack.

“This one drops readers into a Doukhobor village rife with turmoil. A great debate rages in the community torn between the choice to abide by the local government laws or follow their spiritual leader to set up a new life in Alberta,” he explained.

Following the death of his wife in 2005, Shymkiw described how he “drifted” for a number of years. Eventually, it came to the point where he had to face the decision to either move to an assisted living residence or find someone to give him a hand in his own home. Opting for the latter, he

has not only secured the care he needed, but also a welcome dose of encouragement.

“I could not have completed this book without my helper and right hand, Rita McPherson,” said Shymkiw.

“I am partially blind, so I rely on Rita to type for me.”

In fact, the pair have made such a dynamic team, they have already launched into a second book. The next volume will include another 30 stories and will be published

by Friesen Press.

“At one time my retirement years included things like gardening and painting landscapes,” said Shymkiw.

“When I decided to write my first short story, I showed it to Rita, and she said, ‘hey, that’s not too bad.’”

Canora/Sturgis RCMP activity report

By Sgt. Derek Friesen Canora RCMP Detachment The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 30 calls during the week of November 5 to November 12, some of which included: two traffic accidents, five traffic offences, one i m p a i r e d d r i v e r, f o u r other provincial statutes, one other criminal code, one other federal statute, one harassing communications, one assault, one theft under $5,000, one theft over $5,000, two mischiefs, three frauds, one break and enter, and six other incidents.

Impaired driver On November 6, C a n o r a / S t u rg i s R C M P stopped a vehicle in front of the Co-Op parking lot in Canora for a motor vehicle violation. Through investigation it was determined that the driver

was impaired by alcohol.

The driver was arrested for impaired operation and breath samples were obtained. The driver was c h a rg e d w i t h i m p a i r e d operation and received tickets for traffic violations. The driver was released on an undertaking and charges are before the courts.

Canora assault Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of a male victim who was assaulted in Canora on November 8. RCMP attended, and the victim was taken to Yorkton hospital with minor injuries.

Patrols were made for the suspect who fled the scene. RCMP followed up with the victim who declined to provide a statement and press charges.

Farm theft Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint

on November 9 of theft from a rural farm property in the RM of Good Lake where several vehicle parts were stolen.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Deer collision On November 11, C a n o r a / S t u rg i s R C M P and Canora Fire Department responded to a deer versus truck collision on Highway No. 9 south of Canora.

The driver of the truck was not injured and the vehicle was towed due to damages rendering the vehicle inoperable.

The deer was mortally wounded.

Snowmobile patrols Canora/Sturgis RCMP will be increasing patrols in the winter months to prevent snowmobiles or any other powered vehicles on public roads or property. RCMP would

A Decade Ago Among the children who won prizes at the Preeceville and District Lioness Toy Bingo were: Carter Scheller, Tyrell Olson, Ian Erickson, Lyndon Gawrelitza, Zander Neitling and Katryna Englot. ***** At the regular Preeceville town council meeting one of the significant topics of discussion was the town’s new digital sign, according to Lorelei Karcha, town administrator. Rental rates were set for space on the sign, which was to be available after sign installation was completed. ***** Tyrell Schur was hired as the CAP (Community Access Plan) co-ordinator in Preeceville with the goal of assisting anyone that needs help with accessing the Internet or working with different computer programs. ***** Kelsey Ecological Society presented Journeys North by Paddle & Portage, a photographic presentation by Larry Easton, mainly including photographs of outdoor activities such as cycling, mountain biking, hiking, canoeing and kayaking. ***** Sturgis Composite High School students in grades 9 to 12, along with teachers Pat Prokop, Loran Varga, Gordon Schultz and principal Brad Cameron, attended Career Exploration 2010, organized by Good Spirit School Division and Parkland College. ***** In its sixth year of operation, the Christmas gift shop just for children, run by Linda Shewchuk of Preeceville, gave local youngsters the opportunity to purchase gifts hassle free with small sums of money.

Even after a smooth harvest, rail issues cause concern Canadian grain farmers can have a smooth year in terms of production. This fall went generally well for producers thanks to relatively good weather, so it should be a relaxing time for producers as combines are shedded.

But that is rarely the case for grain farmers.

There are simply so many pitfalls that can open overnight to cause issues. While one can understand the uncertainties of Mother Nature introducing production obstacles ranging from bugs to disease to frost to too much rain, or too little, those uncertainties continue once the grain is safely in the bin.

One of the ongoing concerns Prairie producers have is getting their production to international buyers.

In recent years there have been issues in terms of simply getting railcars when required.

It got to the point that a

new law was passed in 2018, requiring Canada’s major rail companies to publish winter plans. They can be forced to pay up if they fail to deliver on certain promises of rail cars.

That such a law was needed reflects the fact that grain delivery is frankly pretty low down in terms of the pecking order when it comes to the allocation of railcars, without some strict regulations in place. Oil and potash and other commodities just make better sense for rail companies.

So maybe moving forward the railcar allocation will be better maintained.

But, as one pothole on the road of grain delivery is hopefully filled in, another appears on the horizon.

If grain is not exactly a preferred commodity for rail companies to haul, it may not be the most lucrative product to be taking up port space either.

The area on which to build export ports is of course finite, and while the grain facilities are in place, they have to pay rates competitive with what other facilities do; which can be handling higher value products.

In a recent www.producer.com article Wade Sobkowich, executive

director of the Western Grain Elevators Association, said rent on federal property at the Port of Vancouver went up 13 to 30 per cent this year.

Those are significant increases, and in the end producers will be paying it in some fashion. It will not be a direct bill, but increased costs in the system will ultimately be reflected in what farmers are paid for their grain.

Farmers are very much captives of the systems with very limited options. Grain companies have generally carved up the Prairie map with less and less service overlap, limiting delivery options.

The country has been basically split between the two rail companies.

There are limited port accesses, east and west.

And so, good harvest or not, farmers have worries to face still.

COVID getting too close for comfort

By Kaare Askildt The COVID-19 virus is coming closer and closer, so we have battened down the hatches and close the doors.

We just got out of Saskatoon in time after the conclusion of Marion’s radiation treatment before a couple of coronavirus infections were reported there.

Now a COVID-19 case has been reported in Perdue which is 100 km south of us, and another case in Biggar which is only 70 km south. The pandemic is creeping us out by creeping closer!

In the meantime, Marion is anxiously waiting to receive the letter from the surgeon advising her of the date for her surgery. Most of her side effects have abated, and her energy has come back in spades.

The pandemic is foremost on her mind these days because her immune system is still compromised.

Ole and Sven were enjoying themselves at Moe’s

Bottoms Up Bar and Grille, and they got talking about the pandemic while sipping on some Akevitt. “ T h e Wo r l d H e a l t h Organization has officially declared COVID-19 a pandemic,” said Ole. “Who said that?” asked Sven.

“Yes,” answered Ole. “Who said it is a pandemic?”

“That’s right!” answered Ole. “They also said don’t touch anyone.”

“Who?” asked Sven.

“Anyone!” said Ole. “I’m asking,” said Sven frustrated, “who said don’t touch anyone?”

“Absolutely,” said Ole, “and they are not the only ones!”

“Who’s not?” asked Sven.

“Right,” answered Ole, “the newly formed ‘World Health Action Taskforce’ said the same thing.”

“The what?” asked Sven.

“Yes,” said Ole. “I just want to know,” said Sven, “what did who say?!”

“No, no,” said Ole, “both WHAT and WHO said it.”

“Oh, come on!” said Sven.

“This is like the old Abbot and Costello baseball story!”

“Now I know what you mean by WHO!” said Sven, “the World Health O rg a n i z a t i o n . D i d y o u know that the World Health Organization declared that dogs cannot contract COVID-19? Therefore, all dogs held in quarantine must be released.”

“So, to clarify,” said Ole, “who let the dogs out?”

“I have a good one for you,” said Ole. “I was talking to Jens the other day, and he told me that he saw on TV that wearing a mask and gloves would be enough during this pandemic. It wasn’t till he got to the store the he was told that pants and a shirt was also required.”

Knut joined them, and while sipping his Akevitt he told them that some scientists have discovered another pathogen they are calling the Peekaboo virus, because the doctors are sending anyone with Peekaboo straight to the ICU. “Before the COVID-19 virus,” said Knut, “I used to cough to cover my fart, but now I fart to cover my cough!”

“I asked my Russian friend Igor the other day,” said Sven, “if he is afraid of the COVID-19 virus.”

“Well, is he afraid?” asked Ole. “Igor said no,” said Sven, “because he has the antidote.”

“Really?” asked Knut, “what is the antidote?”

“Igor said it was vodka!” said Sven. “I didn’t believe him, so I asked him if vodka really kills the virus.”

“Well, does it?” asked Ole. “Igor said no,” said Sven,

NDP says Sask. Party held back COVID measures

By Brian Zinchuk Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Estevan Mercury The New Democratic Party (NDP) is alleging the Saskatchewan Party government has been holding back on measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 until after the election was over.

NDP Leader Ryan Meili spoke to reporters by zoom meeting from Saskatoon on November 6. He said, “This is a government that, during the campaign, wouldn’t tell us their real plans for cuts and privatization, and they didn’t tell us what was really happening with COVID-19, and they didn’t tell us their real plans for policy changes. Of course, they knew these numbers were coming. They had access to the public health information. They have access to the modeling that we should all have access to, but they wouldn’t take any action until after the election, endangering Saskatchewan people.”

H e a l t h C r i t i c Vi c k i Mowat said, “They have had months to prepare for a second wave and have failed to do so. And it’s unacceptable that we’re hearing from folks right now that they’re waiting 10 days

for results, just to find out that they have tested positive when they were only told to self-monitor. This is how COVID-19 spreads, not how we stop it. We know that people on the front lines are working as hard as they can, but they don’t have the resources they need to be able to test the capacity we need.”

Meili said, “During the election, we called for an immediate injection of $50 million into health and education, to help protect the public during this time of COVID-19. We’ve asked for action on class sizes. we see now that the Sask.

Party government is saying we reduce gatherings to 10 people, and yet we’re still sending kids into classrooms with 30, 35 kids or more. We need immediate action to reduce the size of gatherings in our schools as well.”

On the usage of masks, Meili said, “We’ve asked for action and clarity on masks and nothing until now, after the election, and we still don’t have clarity of enforcement. We still have only three locations. It’s not clear that those are necessarily the right locations and only places that should be having mandatory indoor

mask use.”

Asked about those people who say that COVID-19 numbers are still going up in places where mask usage has been implemented, Meili responded, “The science is clear. Masks prevent the transmission of COVID-19; not 100 per cent. And that’s why they are not the only thing to do, but they are very important measure of protecting each other. And what I would say to folks who are resistant, who are reluctant, and I understand it’s a big change, it’s an inconvenience, but that this is something we do for each other, and that this is a time to recognize viruses don’t discriminate, they will they will attack anyone. It is a time for us to take care of each other to understand that we are all in this together and that

wearing a mask is a pretty small thing to ask to keep those around us safe.”

Meili referenced rising active case counts in Alberta and Manitoba. Asked about North Dakota, which posted 1,764 new cases on November 6 after posting 1,540 cases on November 5, Meili said, “It’s extremely disturbing watching what’s going on in North Dakota, Montana and throughout the United States; extremely disturbing. And we have seen a government down there that has been very irresponsible under President Trump and, and I think it’s good news that it looks like he won’t be the president anymore.

“But we also are seeing down there, what can happen here. We’re at an earlier point in the curve, but that’s very possible right here in

Saskatchewan. And that’s why we need a government that’s actually paying attention to this, not acting like they’re doing a victory lap, but it’s actually understanding that we’re early on in this and it still needs serious work.”

Asked if he was saying the Sask. Party delayed bringing in mask mandates and restrictions on certain businesses until after the election because it was politically convenient, Meili replied, “They knew what they were going to have to do. They knew what the numbers were doing, and they haven’t actually shared the full information yet.

And this is what we’re asking for today.

“What’s exactly happ e n i n g ? W h a t ’s t h e truth of COVID-19 and Saskatchewan today? What does the modeling show for the number of cases in the weeks and months ahead, for the number of hospitalizations, for the number of deaths? We saw that back in the spring, where’s that been now for months on end?

“What’s happening with that R-zero (R0) number that we talked about so much, and the rate of transmission? And what are the

measures that will make the difference? We see other provinces put that up and say these actions will reduce that rate of transmission by a certain amount. We see none of that information from this government.

We need open, transparent, honest government, and we haven’t seen that from Scott Moe.” He said this is a government that hasn’t wanted to bother anyone, “but as a result, doing what’s politically convenient was politically easy. They put us at a greater risk of more people getting sick and losing their lives.”

Saskatchewan put out COVID-19 modelling in April that projected much higher infection rates and hospitalizations than what is currently being seen. Meili said, “We’ve learned a great deal since April. We know that COVID-19 treatment has advanced considerably.

We’ve learned more about the virus; exactly why we need to see what the modeling says today, what’s happening with the new R0, the new transmission rates, in terms of what we’re likely to see for cases, as well as what impact that will have on hospitals and on mortality.”

Moe says Meili is politicizing COVID-19 response

by New Democratic Leader Ryan Meili that the Saskatchewan Party had held back on measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 until after the election was over, calling them “irresponsible and false.” He also accused Meili of politicizing the COVID-19 response.

Moe said in an emailed statement, “Mr. Meili’s allegations are irresponsible

and false. Our government has consistently acted on the advice of public health officials throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and I have no time for Mr. Meili’s ill-advised attempts at politicizing our response to COVID-19. These statements only serve as an insult to the professionalism of the dedicated public health officials that have provided sound guidance, guidance which is based entirely on public health considerations, not on political considerations like election timing as Mr. Meili is irresponsibly suggesting.

How to help a friend or relative with anxieties and depression

By Stan Popovich Do you know a friend or loved one who suffers from fear, anxiety, and depression and do not know what to do?

It can be frustrating to watch someone you know suffer and not be able to help them.

Here are six ways to help the person cope in these kinds of situations and the best way to deal with anxiety.

1. Learn as much as you can in managing anxiety and depression: There are many

books and sources of information that will educate you on how to deal with fear and anxiety. Share this information with the person who is struggling with their mental health issues.

2. Be understanding and patient with the person struggling with their fears: Dealing with depression and anxiety can be difficult for the person so do not add more problems than what are already there. Do not get into arguments with the person who

is having a difficult time with their anxieties.

3. Talk to the person instead of talking at them: It is important not to lecture the person who is struggling with anxiety and depression.

Talk to the person about their issues without being rude.

Most people will listen if you approach them in a proper manner.

4. Get help: Seek help from a professional who can help your friend or relative with their mental health struggles.

A counselor can give you advice and ideas on how to overcome anxiety, fear, and depression. Getting help from a professional is the number one priority in helping your loved one deal with fear and anxiety. Joining a local mental health support group can also be helpful. Talk to your doctor to get more information about potential groups in your area.

5. Talk to the person regarding what will happen if they do not get help: Another way to convince the person

who is struggling with fear and depression is to tell them what may happen if they don’t get some assistance.

Anxiety and depression can make things worse and usually it won’t go away by itself without some kind of treatment.

6. Find out the reasons why the person won’t get help: Address the issues on why the person will not get the necessary help. Many people who are struggling are fearful and frustrated. Try to

find out the reasons why he or she won’t get the help they need and then try to find ways that will overcome their resistance to seeking assistance.

Saskatchewan unemployment rate lowest in Canada in October According to Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey, for the third consecutive month, Saskatchewan has the lowest unemployment rate in Canada.

Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate improved to 6.4 per cent in October, the lowest among the provinces (seasonally adjusted), and well below the national unemployment

rate of 8.9 per cent, according to a release.

War veteran addresses Preeceville students William Lesko, a Preeceville Legion member and war veteran was invited to address the students and staff at the Preeceville School during its virtual Remembrance Day service held on November 10.

Lesko graduated from Sturgis Composite High School in 1968. In 1969, he joined the air element of the Canadian Forces and 41.5 years later Lesko had reached the end of his career and was required to take compulsory retirement from the Royal Canadian Armed Forces.

“What is Remembrance Day and why do we wear poppies? What is a veteran?

Is Remembrance Day just another public holiday for you to goof off?” Lesko asked.

“A veteran, by definition, is anyone who has completed their basic military training and was honourably discharged from the Canadian Military. They are people who offered up their lives to be placed in harm’s way, should it be necessary, for the protection of Canada and its citizens.

“A little more than 100 years ago, in 1914, probably

during the time of your greatgrandfathers or great-greatgrandfathers, there was a Great War. Germany wanted to take over Western Europe,” continued Lesko. “Canada was one of many countries that took up arms against Germany to stop its aggression. It was a very brutal and horrible war that started in 1914 and did not end until 1918. On the 11th month, 11th day and 11th hour, 1918, the guns of the First World War fell silent.

“Canada had lost 67,000 military personnel and 150,000 were wounded.

This was supposed to be the war that would end all wars.

The first Remembrance Day was observed on November 11, 1919 but it would not be until 1921 that the poppy would become the symbol of remembrance.

“Remembrance Day marks the official end of the First World War. Remembrance Day is but a brief moment in time to give official recognition to all those who made the supreme sacrifice for Canada in the First World War and all wars and conflicts that

After the First World War, there was the Second World War, Korea, Afghanistan and other conflicts around the world. Why do we want to remember horrible things like war, death and destruction?

“If we do not remember, the sacrifice of more than 100,000 Canadians will have been meaningless. They died for us. They died for a collection of traditions they cherished and a future they believed in, they died for Canada. They died so you could have a better life. They

died so you could go to sleep at night with a full belly and you would not have to worry about a boogie man coming to your home and snatching you from your bed.

“Had we not been able to win past wars, things could be very different today. You could be marching to the tune of a different drum, lining up every morning in the school gym and pledging allegiance to some horrible tyrannical leader, maybe speaking a different language, wearing a uniform to school, not be allowed I-pads, I-phones,

quads, boats, a cabin at the lake, Disneyland, fancy clothes, no communication with your friends. Some of you may go to school but some of you may not be allowed to go to school.

“Your freedom, your right to choose, go to school, your right to vote, your right to practise whatever religion you chose, the right to have medical treatment when you need it, travel where you wish, play and party when you want; all of this is possible because thousands of Canadians laid down their lives, so that you could have a better life. That is why we must remember.

We must never forget. We must not take our Canadian values for granted. We must remember all those who serve or have served in our armed forces and recognize their willingness to endure hardships and fears, taken upon themselves so that we could have a better life and live in peace.

“If we remember, we can perhaps prevent something as horrible as the First World War and the Second World War from ever happening

again. The world is in a fragile state and world leaders try to resolve issues by peaceful means but you can never tell what the future holds.

“That is why you need to remember. If we forget what happened in the past, we are sure to go down the path of destruction again. Wear a poppy on Remembrance Day. Wear the poppy proudly and study the past. Read books about the wars. Increase your knowledge on the subject so that you can tell your children about Remembrance Day and how important it is that we remember.

“I believe everyone should be able to recite the words of The poem In Flanders Fields; a small sacrifice on your part.

On the days leading up to November 11, we must take time to reflect on the past and appreciate the freedom secured for us by those who died and fought in past wars for Canada. Freedom did not come free.

“Wear a poppy proudly and remember why November 11th is so important for all Canadians,” concluded Lesko.

Senior Cobras looking forward to new season With the first season of the new Sask East Hockey League almost here, members of the Canora Senior Cobras are getting ready for their first game action.

Of course, with COVID-19 prominent across the region, the pandemic is on the minds of local hockey fans and players alike. But Cal Homeniuk, Cobras president and general manager, said plans are in place for the season to start on time, barring any unforeseen changes in the COVID situation.

H o m e n i u k s a i d h e ’s looking forward to the start of action for the new nineteam league. In addition to the Cobras, the other teams

are: Hudson Bay Hunters, Theodore Buffaloes, Ituna Avalanche, Bredenbury Cougars, Esterhazy Flyers, Rocanville Tigers, Langenburg Warriors and Moosomin Rangers.

In addition to local players, the Cobras’ roster includes talent from a number of area communities. The goaltenders are Rylan Palchewich of Canora and Blake Foster of Kamsack. Members of the defence are: Matt Wilgosh, C a r s o n D e n n i s , Ty l e r Ostoforoff and William H a u b e r, a l l o f C a n o r a , along with Tyler Stratechuk of Springside, Logan Hilderman of Kamsack and Tanner Denesowich

Under the watchful eye of coach Terry Dennis, the Canora Senior Cobras held a spirited practise on November 11 in preparation for the start of 2020/21 season of the new Sask East Hockey League.

The Cobras home opener is set for November 21 versus Ituna. of Yorkton. The forwards are: Casey Mydonick, Sean Kolodziejski, Tanner

Kopeck, Bryce Pelechaty, Kody Rock, Ryley Stefanyshyn and Skyler

Hladun, all of Canora, Brandon Whitehawk and Logan Foster of Kamsack, Noah Tonn of Preeceville, Cole Rathgeber of Goodeve, and Tanner Mak and Brayden Fogg of Yorkton.

“Canora should have a competitive team right from the start,” said Homeniuk.

“We have a fast offensiveminded group with an average defense and above-average goaltending. I expect the Cougars will improve as the season progresses and the players get to know each other better, peaking just in time for the playoffs.”

Canora and area hockey fans have already shown strong support for the return

of the Cobras, as season tickets were sold out well before the team hit the ice for the first game.

“Due to social distancing, we have set a limit of 150 fans per game,” said Homeniuk. “Fifty single game tickets will be available for each home game, in addition to the 100 season ticket holders.”

Game day tickets are available from Community Insurance and the Town of Canora.

The season starts for the Cobras with a game in Hudson Bay on November 20, followed by the home opener at the Canora Civic Centre on November 21 versus Ituna.

U18 Pats hockey team victimized by weather The U18 Preeceville Pats hockey team was scheduled to play its first game of the season in Preeceville on November 8 but it was cancelled due to deteriorating weather conditions.

“Our season is based on home-and-home weekend games, then they like us to have four or five days off,” said Kirby Pankratz, head coach.

“We are only allowed to

play a mini league within our league before they expand us to play other teams. We play both Yorkton teams (Remax and Snap On) and Melville (Chiefs) in our mini league.

The other part of our league playing their mini league series is Langenburg, Indian Head, Esterhazy, Moosomin, and Whitewood.

“We are currently in phase 3 of SHA (Saskatchewan Hockey Association)

approval for return to play guidelines and if things go well we will expand our mini leagues and see some of the other teams tentatively scheduled for phase 4 return to play guidelines starting January 18,” concluded Pankratz.

The Preeceville U18 took on Yorkton Remax in Yorkton on November 9 and was victorious, defeating Yorkton with a 10 to 1 final

score.

SaskEnergy offers rebates, winter programs As the winter heating season begins, SaskEnergy has launched three programs to assist homeowners across the province with home equipment upgrades, maintenance and safety. SaskEnergy’s Residential Equipment Replacement Rebate, the Carbon Monoxide Alarm Rebate, and a second phase of the Tune-Up Assistance Program (TAP) are available to residents as of November 2, according to a release.

Rebate in 2019, SaskEnergy has renamed and expanded the program for 2020-21 to include monetary rebates for the purchase and installation of qualifying high-efficiency natural gas furnaces, boilers, combiboilers, HRVs, and water heaters through SaskEnergy Network Members. Rebate amounts will vary depending on the eligible equipment being installed.

“Last year, SaskEnergy provided more than $1 million in support for

Saskatchewan customers through rebate programs,” said Bronwyn Eyre, minister responsible for SaskEnergy.

“The expanded Residential Equipment Replacement Rebate will support homeowner investments in upgraded, energy-efficient equipment and optimize home energy use, which will save customers both energy and money.”

As the temperatures drop and furnaces across the province are firing up, it is important that homeowners

take steps to ensure that their furnace(s) run as efficiently and safely as possible through proper maintenance, continued the release.

S a s k E n e rg y ’s Tu n e - U p Assistance Program (TAP) has provided quality furnace maintenance to 1,300 low-income homeowners across the province over the past four years. The 2020 program was launched in June, and SaskEnergy is now opening a second application period to reach additional homeowners this winter.

Qualified applicants receive a free Home Heating Tune-Up from a local SaskEnergy Network Member, two furnace filters, a carbon monoxide alarm, and up to $100 in equipment repairs if required.

In addition to the program expansions, SaskEnergy is also offering a rebate on carbon monoxide alarms from participating retailers across the province. The $10 rebate will be applied at the point of purchase in 139 stores across 75 communities until January

31, 2021. Carbon monoxide alarms are the first line of defense when it comes to protecting residents from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Federal government moves to improve rural connectivity

In a press conference in Ottawa, Prime Minister Trudeau said on November 9, “Our government is launching the $1.75 billion universal broadband fund to connect all Canadians to high speed Internet.

The fund was boosted $750 million from the original $1 billion in the 2019 budget. The backgrounder provided by the government notes the strategy is to connect every Canadian by 2030.

The strategy is to reach 98 per cent of the population by 2026.

Elements of the program include a “rapid response stream,” with up to $150 million allocated for projects that will be completed quickly and be in service by November 15, 2021. For large-impact projects, the Canada Infrastructure Bank will be brought in as a partner for projects that are “transformative in terms of results and scope,” according to a backgrounder p r o v i d e d . T h e r e ’s a l s o funding for “a diversity of projects,” from “small ISPs (Internet service providers), municipal-led projects, Indigenous projects, as well as projects from the larger ISPs.” A further $50 million is included for mobility projects benefitting Indigenous peoples. This includes along highways and roads, as well as Indigenous communities.

The agreement with Telesat is to secure highspeed Internet capacity over Canada through the c o m p a n y ’s l o w E a r t h orbit (LEO) satellite constellation. Telesat’s constellation will utilize next-generation technology to significantly improve connectivity in rural and remote Canada, including the far north.

Te l e s a t ’s w e b s i t e s a y s its LEO network is truly global, noting, “every point on earth is covered, including polar regions.”

The company plans on expanding its low earth orbit constellation to 298 satellites by 2023, with plans to build out its constellation to up to 1,600 satellites down the road to meet demand.

Under the agreement, the Government has committed up to $600 million to secure capacity on Ottawa-based Telesat’s LEO satellite constellation. This capacity will be made available to Internet service providers at a reduced rate in order

to provide high-speed, reliable Internet access to the most challenging rural and remote communities in Canada, Telesat noted in a release. “ Te l e s a t L E O w i l l transform connectivity in Canada, and this agreement will bring affordable enterprise grade, high-speed connectivity to underserved Canadians no matter where they live and work,” said Dan Goldberg, Telesat’s president and CEO, in a press release on N o v e m b e r 9 . “ We a p plaud the Government of Canada and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada for leveraging revolutionary technologies like Telesat LEO to drive widespread social and economic benefits. We look forward to working with Canadian service providers to provide this capacity to qualified communities across the country to get all Canadians connected as soon as possible.”

Under the terms of the agreement, a dedicated pool of Telesat LEO rural connectivity capacity will be available to service providers at greatly reduced rates on a first come, first served basis to provide connectivity for eligible communities.

With Telesat LEO’s high performance network capacity, service providers will offer broadband services to their end users of at least 50/10 Mbps speeds with unlimited data, and mobility service providers will offer LTE services.

“Telesat LEO will provide the reliable, secure, fibre-like broadband connections needed to bridge the digital divide in Canada, ensuring that Canadians living in rural and remote communities have access to affordable high-quality broadband that meets the Canadian Radio-television and Te l e c o m m u n i c a t i o n s C o m m i s s i o n ’s ( C RT C ) goal of at least 50 Mbps download, 10 Mbps upload speeds with unlimited data,” Telesat said.

Telesat was formerly a Crown corporation known as Telesat Canada.

It privatized in 1998. It launched Canada’s first communications satellite in 1972.

Family ski trail all groomed and expanded The Preeceville Lions Club undertook a major project with widening and continuing the clearing of trees along the walking and ski trail around the Town of Preeceville, according to Ralph Ager, Lions member. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We created this idea for making improvements to

the existing trail and creating walking and cross country ski trails where individuals could walk or ski around the town when completed,â&#x20AC;? said Ager.

The multi-purpose trail will be funded by the proceeds from the Chase the Ace. A committee was established to oversee this project with members from the Lions club, Kelsey Ecological Society and community members.

The trails will be groomed by four committee members: Ralph Ager, Florian Balawyder, Joe Firman and Phil Murrin, who will take turns grooming the trails throughout the winter months. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We will continue making trail improvements in the spring with the addition of putting down reject gravel. We have also built a warm-up shack that will be placed at the entrance located west of the Wildlife Park entrance. The shack was built by the Lions Club members and made

The Preeceville Lions Family trail has developed into a multi-purpose trail for cross- country skiing in winter and walking and biking in summer. The trail is a simple loop with a couple of cross paths. It covers about three km in the loop. It is an easy trail, mostly flat. It winds through aspen trees and hugs Annie Laurie Lake

to the north. The trailhead is located at the west end of Preeceville at the Wildlife Park. There is easy access from several other spots in town. The trail committee maintains the ski trail with two tracks. The committee plans to expand the trail and include warm-up shelters and improved signing.

There are four concrete benches along the trail around the Annie Laurie

Lake and two are located along the trail. The benches are dedicated in memory of past Lions members, Ron and Rob Neitling, Peter Predy and Nestor Maksymiw. The benches are scheduled to have plaques paced on them in memory of the past members.

The Lions club would like to expand and add more benches and another warmup shelter in the near future.

As a continuation of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Masks for Seniorsâ&#x20AC;? project, Yorkton and District Community (YDCF) Foundation members will deliver 3,060 masks to residents living in seniors housing units in twenty district communities.

During phase 2, Yorkton and District Community Foundation connected with corporate donors to prepare mask kits for 279 seniors in housing authority properties in Langenburg, Churchbridge, Kamsack, Preeceville, N o r q u a y, B r e d e n b u r y, Ituna, Buchanan, Sturgis, Stenen, McNutt, Springside, Saltcoats, Pelly, Tantallon,

Grayson, Invermay, Dubuc, Calder and Theodore, according to a release. Each kit contains a reusable cloth mask, ten disposable masks and information about care and proper use of masks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everyone involved in this project wants seniors in our communities to know that their community cares about them,â&#x20AC;? said Ray Bailey, YDCF president. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We hope that having masks readily available will support seniors living in housing authority properties if they wish to use a mask when out in the community or when six feet of separation canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be maintained.â&#x20AC;?

Phase one saw delivery in July of 6,600 masks to 600 seniors, residents of Good Spirit Housing A u t h o r i t y a n d Yo r k t o n Housing Corporation properties, in Yorkton, Canora and Melville.

During discussions with residents and charities about needs, the lack of masks for seniors living in smaller housing authority properties was identified as a further concern.

Yo r k t o n a n d D i s t r i c t Community Foundation works with local charity groups to identify needs in the community, uses that information to make it easy for donors to connect with

causes that matter to the donor, and builds endowment funds generating grants to support local charity projects, year after year. â&#x20AC;&#x153; Yo r k t o n & D i s t r i c t Community Foundation was launched last year to build a legacy of support in our communities,â&#x20AC;? says Bailey. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Seniors Mask Project and the Community Emergency Fund are two ways to connect donors for immediate support during the pandemic.â&#x20AC;?

Donating to the project are Grain Millers, Legacy C o - o p , C a n a d i a n Ti r e , Baileys Funeral Home, Southern Document Solutions, Inc (Xerox Canada, Ltd.), Yorkton Rotary Club, and seamstress Judith Stewart. YDCF continues to welcome donations to the Community Emergency Fund from interested individuals and businesses.

In total, the YDCF, Seniors Masks Project will have distributed more than 9,600 masks to housing authority properties in 23 communities, concluded the release.
