COVID-19 case update for Saskatchewan According to information from the government of Saskatchewan website, as of June 28, there was one new case of COVID-19 in Saskatchewan to report, bringing the Saskatchewan total to 778 cases. The new case is located in the Far North region.

Of the 778 reported COVID-19 cases in Saskatchewan, 104 are considered active. A total of 661 people have recovered.

Six individuals are receiving inpatient care in the hospital: three in the

North, two in Saskatoon and one in the South.

There are no COVID-19 patients currently in ICU. Of the 778 cases in the province: • 165 cases are travellers; • 472 are community contacts (including mass gatherings); • 103 have no known exposures; and • 38 are under investigation by local public health.

O v e r a l l i n Saskatchewan: • 55 cases are health care workers; however,

the source of the infections may not be related to health care in all instances. • 323 of the cases are from the Far North, 186 are from the Saskatoon area, 114 from the North, 80 from the Regina area, 63 from the South and 12 from the Central region. • 11 3 c a s e s i n v o l v e people 19 years of age and under, while the remainder are adults. • 267 cases are in the 20 to 39 age range; 247 are in the 40 to 59 age range; 130 are in the 60 to 79 age range; and 21 are in the 80-plus range.

• 51 per cent of the cases are females and 49 per cent are males. • 13 deaths related to COVID-19 have been reported to date.

To d a t e , 6 4 , 8 0 0 COVID-19 tests have been performed in Saskatchewan. As of June 26, when other provincial and national numbers were available from the Public Health Agency of Canada, Saskatchewan’s per capita rate was 48,342 people tested per million population. The national rate was 70,241 people tested per million population.

COVID-19 Testing Testing for COVID-19 is available to anyone currently working outside the home or anyone returning to work as part of the ReOpen Saskatchewan plan.

Testing is also available to: • Those being admitted to acute care for more than 24 hours, including expectant mothers. • Immunocompromised individuals and their health care providers.

Re-Open Saskatchewan updates The second part of Phase 4 of Re-Open Saskatchewan was to begin on June 29.

As of June 29, libraries, museums, galleries, movie theatres and live theatres will be able to re-open, according to a release. The guidelines for these businesses and services are included in this week’s update to the Re-Open Saskatchewan plan.

The re-opening dates for the other activities in this part of Phase 4, including indoor pools, indoor rinks, indoor sports and activities, casinos and bingo halls will

be announced shortly.

Other updates to the ReOpen Saskatchewan plan include: Parks and campgrounds Effective June 26, parks and campgrounds are open to 100 per cent capacity for overnight stays and limitedterm campsites, continued the release. Along with this change, access can be provided to washroom and shower facilities; however, increased cleaning and disinfection must take place.

Outdoor sports and activities Wi t h o u t d o o r s p o r t s

getting underway this week, some revisions have been made to the Outdoor Sports and Activities Guidelines.

If physical distancing can be maintained, sports and activities are now able to resume, including playing games. For sports and activities where distancing can’t be maintained, such as full contact sports, minileagues should be formed to allow teams to safely return to playing games, while helping mitigate the risk of spreading COVID-19.

Usage of non-medical masks

Staff in restaurants and licensed establishments, gyms and fitness facilities, and personal care services that cannot maintain two metres of distance from customers must wear a nonmedical mask, such as a cloth mask, or a procedural/ surgical mask. As well, it is recommended that older staff/seniors and those with a weakened immune system wear procedural/surgical masks.

Locker rooms, showers and change rooms now open Locker rooms, shower

facilities and change rooms are now permitted to open for a variety of businesses and activities, including gyms and fitness facilities, beaches, campgrounds, golf courses and facilities where outdoor sports and activities are played. Increased cleaning and disinfection of these facilities is required.

Change rooms in clothing and retail stores can now move to 100 per cent occupancy.

As restrictions are gradually lifted in the province, additional information will continue to be added to the

Re-Open Saskatchewan plan based on direction from public health officials and input from businesses and service providers.

Saskatchewan residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the guidelines and follow their recommendations to ensure the province can continue to re-open in a safe manner without a significant increase in the transmission of COVID-19.

More campsites available in Saskatchewan Saskatchewan Provincial Parks is pleased to announce it is opening the rest of its camping inventory for the peak summer season, according to a release. “After slowly and carefully opening the parks in May and campgrounds in June, we are excited to offer more campsite availability,� said Gene Makowsky, parks, culture and sport minister. “This has been a methodical re-opening and every step along the way

has allowed us to implement enhanced cleaning and new operational procedures to ensure the safety of our staff and visitors.�

Nightly, group, double and equestrian campsites that were previously closed due to COVID-19 restrictions have already started to become available to book once again. More sites are becoming available, so campers are encouraged to check the reservation system regularly at https://

saskparks.goingtocamp. com/.

There will be no further seasonal sites available in Saskatchewan Provincial Parks, however, there is no maximum stay per site, so campers can enjoy any available campsite for the duration of their choice, continued the release.

Shower facilities will operate with enhanced cleaning protocols. Laundry facilities and shared cookhouses in day-use areas will remain closed until further notice.

campers are encouraged to continue booking online and if they haven’t already, purchase an annual park entry permit online with their booking. An automatic check-in process was implemented in June which allows visitors who have a 2020 Annual Park Entry Permit and a reserved campsite to proceed directly to their campsite upon arrival.

Sask Parks staff continue to implement enhanced cleaning and sanitization procedures. Signage is in place throughout the parks to remind visitors of the safety protocols and restrictions in place. Campers are asked to bring hand

sanitizer and disinfectant wipes, maintain physical distance from others, respect the restrictions and rules that are in place and to stay home if not feeling well.

By working together, park staff and visitors can ensure parks remain safe spaces for all. The public is reminded that beaches and playgrounds are open.

RCMP activity report for June 18 to June 25

By Cpl. Dallyn Holmstrom Canora RCMP Detachment The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 38 calls for service over the past week, which included six traffic offenses, six provincial statutes, two mischiefs, two uttering threats, one theft, one assault, one fraud, and one break and enter.

The Canora/Sturgis RCMP would like to inform the public about a Social Insurance Number (SIN) fraud that is taking place in the area. Members of the public have been getting calls advising that their SIN has been compromised and to press “1” for further details.

The fraudsters have been

using technology so it appears that a call is coming from a local Canora phone number to add credibility to their fraud. Please never give out any personal or financial information over the phone or to someone you have never met.

Fraudsters can be very persuasive making you think they are with law enforcement authorities, government agencies or health care providers but rest assured none of these mentioned would ever take or ask for information or money over the phone.

On June 20 the Canora/ Sturgis RCMP responded to a complaint of two males with knives and a pipe knocking on the door

of a local bar in Canora.

When police were en route to the area they both fled on foot. Police were unable to locate or apprehend the males. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Canora/Sturgis RCMP by calling 306563-4700. On June 22 the Canora/ Sturgis RCMP responded to an intoxicated male trying to ride a bike on Second Avenue West in Canora. Members attended the scene and located a

highly intoxicated screaming male in the middle of the street with a bicycle laying on top of him. The male was placed under arrest and placed in RCMP cells until he was sober.

On June 22 Canora/ Sturgis RCMP responded to an intoxicated male passed out sleeping in a back alley near Mary Street in Canora. This male was woken by a member of the public. The male then departed the scene and was not located again.

On June 23 the Canora/ Sturgis RCMP responded to a suspicious abandoned truck on Highway No. 9 in Canora. The truck was not registered and

owners or drivers have not been located. The truck is an early 80s blue Chevrolet 1500 regular cab. Anyone with information about this incident is requested to contact the Canora/Sturgis RCMP by calling 306-563-4700.

On the night of June 23 the Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to a complaint of an intoxicated adult m a l e a rg u i n g w i t h a n d pushing a member of the Canora Fire Department as well as throwing a beer

can and uttering threats to multiple fire fighters. Police responded to this complaint and the male fled from police with a female passenger.

Later in the night RCMP, Canora Fire Department and Emergency Services responded to a single vehicle rollover involving the same vehicle and occupants. Both the male driver and the female passenger were trapped in the vehicle when Emergency Services arrived on scene with serious non-life threatening injuries. The Canora Fire Department members were able to free both occupants and they were transported to hospital for their injuries.

Town of Preeceville holds regular meeting The Town of Preeceville Council held its regular meeting on June 17 with approval for release of minutes from the May 27 monthly meeting, according to Lorelei Karcha, chief administrator.

The meeting was held at the Community Legion hall due to the social distancing guidelines resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Council acknowledged that Dr. Shamsher Singh had notified the Saskatchewan Health Authority and the Town of Preeceville that he will be leaving the Preeceville and District Health Centre as of August 31. It was also acknowledged that the Doctor Incentive Agreement between Singh and the Town will be cancelled as of his departure date with the final incentive payment provided. The Town terminated the house lease agreement for the house that Singh was residing in with his family.

Council agreed that a letter is to be written to the Saskatchewan Health Authority requesting a

review and accept any qualified physicians recruited by the Town of Preeceville for the upcoming physician vacancy in an effort to avoid the lengthy Saskatchewan International Physician Practice Assessment (SIPPA) program process.

Wo r k o n t h e Wa s t e Water Treatment Facility Project was acknowledged as being done by Acadia Construction Management Ltd. The Town of Preeceville was to advertise to have a contractor assist with the cleanup work of properties that have been identified as unsightly and unruly nuisance properties under the Town’s Nuisance Abatement Bylaw.

Council received and approved a quote from McGill’s Industrial Services for dust control services in the amount of $13,766.

Council acknowledged that Phase 2 of the Asbestos Abatement services provided by Got Mold, Air Quality specialists at 20 Main Street North is now

complete and the remaining contract portion of $27,503 was paid as of May 22.

Council also decided that Squareone Consulting Ltd. be hired to complete a final asbestos inspection and sampling work required for the remaining portions of the building.

The lease agreement between the Town and the Saskatchewan Health Authority for Physiotherapy and Public Health space within the Preeceville administration building was approved and authorized for another year.

A new bylaw was passed and approved to provide resident and visitor parking only access on both sides of Second Avenue Northwest from First Street Northwest to Second Avenue Northwest.

T h e To w n o f Preeceville approved a donation of $250 towards the Presentation of the Preeceville Graduates 2020 virtual event.

Council accepted the resignation of Jesse Nelson, arena manager and shop labourer effective May 15.

The position will be advertised and filled as soon as possible.

Shawn Kowal, shop labourer, was acknowledged as receiving his Water and Sewer Level 1 certification from the Operators Certification Board.

It was acknowledged that by Minister’s Order all municipalities assessment appeal periods for 2020 have been extended by 30 days due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Town of Preeceville assessment appeal deadline was June 1.

Council accepted the resignation of Chris Balyski,

Town of Preeceville councillor effective May 12 and the vacancy will be filled at the 2020 election held on November 9.

A demolition permit was approved for #42-Fifth Street Southeast for a house and porch demolition.

Council agreed that in response to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic the Town of Preeceville cancel three months of current rental payments for the following leases: the Preeceville Recreation Centre, Dawson Ramsay, Preeceville Nursery School and Studio Dance One. Council approved its budget and mill rate which will remain the same at 6.6 mils for the 2020 tax year.

A new bylaw was approved for base tax and property tax incentives and penalties.

A tax reduction was agreed to be given to both the Preeceville Senior ’s Club 60 and the Preeceville Ukrainian Catholic Hall for

2020.

It was acknowledged that the Parkland Regional Wa s t e M a n a g e m e n t Authority’s 2020 Recycling Levy was set at $18 per capita totalling $20,250 and the Regional Landfill Levy was set at $54 per capita totalling $60,750 less the Town’s $100 weekly hauling rebate.

Council approved the Preeceville Lions request to erect a Lion’s International Sign on the Town’s property located on the south side of the Highway Avenue East.

Approval was also given to the Lion’s Club to set up a gate entrance to the Lion’s Family Trail.

Adapting new energy technology While the dream of some to see the taps of oil and gas to be turned off completely is largely hyperbole on their part, any reduction on the reliance of those resources should be seen as generally positive.

Of course such steps have to be taken with a view to the larger picture.

In terms of energy there is the element of preserving stocks for key sectors over the longer term, and of course the environmental impact of extracting and processing oil and gas reserves versus whatever technologies develop as an alternative.

Nothing we do as human beings happens without it having some impact on the natural environment we live in, and that is a fact of life that cannot be overcome completely.

What we do need to do as a species is limit our

impact, because we rely on this planet to produce food, to supply water and to have clean air to breath.

For agriculture that will mean looking to adopt new technologies as we move forward.

One area that is intriguing for farmers is the idea of electric powered machinery.

On-road electric vehicles and hybrids, think cars being at the forefront, have become if not common, at least on the radar these days. Most consumers may not look at an electric car as their first choice to purchase,

but they know they exist as an option.

T h e o ff - r o a d m a r k e t that includes agricultural applications, think tractors, is not as developed.

It might never be as widely reasonable given the power required, but there are going to be farm applications where electric is a viable option in the future.

The agriculture machinery sector has always been an innovative one, with an ability to go into the shop with a problem in mind, and emerge sometime later with a viable solution that could be manufactured for farmers

to use.

One only needs to look at the zero-till equipment of today. There was a time when producers could not envision being able to seed directly into h e a v y t r a s h c o v e r, b u t today it is an accepted practice.

We will see the same evolution in terms of electric power for farm equipment, although at present it is difficult to envision exactly the scope the development will encompass, and of course the timeframe of the arrival of various elements to the marketplace.

Certainly, in this era we are aware that development can often happen far more quickly than we might imagine.

Increasingly, technology is moving forward at a startling pace, and we are likely to see that in the case of electric equipment for the farm.

The benefit of a sense of humour while dealing with cancer

By Kaare Askildt The on again, off again treatment schedules that Marion has experienced and endured could in part be blamed on the coronavirus.

But reading the news regarding the number of corona patients at the three Saskatoon hospitals combined, which is only five so far, does not seem to create a shortage of medical staff or hospital beds. Of course, I could be wrong in my observation, as there might be other factors weighing in as well.

Marion will be finishing her last chemo treatment in two days, and there is no further treatment scheduled, but that could change later today.

Today is the day that the oncologists at the Saskatoon Cancer Centre will be having their round table discussions and setting the triage. It conjures up a few scenarios.

Like for example, the physicians dressed in their scrubs with the face masks hanging around their necks, are sitting around a large table

with files piled high. That’s the image that they want to project to the patients that rely on them for treatment.

Each oncologist presents his or her case or cases, discussion ensues and decisions are made as to which patient gets the prescribed treatment and when that will start.

However, in my twisted mind I see them sitting around a table wearing their golf attire and contemplating which golf course they should play on today. On the table is a roulette wheel with the names of patients in the various slots. They start the triage by spinning the roulette wheel, and as the ball stops at names, the lineup of first to last patient is created. Then they do a heads- or-tails coin toss as to the treatment procedure such as chemotherapy or radiation. They’re done in half an hour, and head out to the golf course wearing their face masks because of the COVID-19, leaving their nurses to take the heat when

calling the various patients to inform them of the latest decisions.

A sense of humour is a must for us while Marion is going through her cancer treatment. The preceding description of how the medical professionals arrive at their decisions and conclusions is meant to be humorous, and I beg forgiveness if I have offended anybody. Both Marion and I have nothing but great respect for all the medical professionals that are doing their level best to help Marion beat her stage four cancer.

The oncologists had their meeting, and Marion was scheduled for her radiation markers and then the radiation was tentatively scheduled to start on May 7.

Ole and Sven were enjoying a couple of shots of Akevitt at the Bottoms Up Bar and Grille while making small talk.

“With today’s pandemic, we all have to have a sense of humour,” said Sven.

“You’re right,” said Ole. “Look at the Americans, they have a great sense of humour, just look at who they elected President!”

During the Viking era, Randolf, a self-pronounced King, needed a court jester; a jester that would be able to make everyone laugh. He announced a competition where the participants would be judged by his half sister Gunvor who was known to have absolutely no sense of humour at all. Ten brave souls entered the competition and the date of the competition was set to coincide with the annual fair, to make sure that there would be a big audience. There was only one rule for the competition.

Tell your joke or amusing anecdote to Gunvor, and if she laughs you live, but if she does not laugh you die.

The contestants had about two weeks to prepare their material, and never before had so much original content been created in the little kingdom. Jokes upon jokes

were tested, tweaked, and committed to memory. The contestants had worked very hard and were ready for the competition. The people at the fair were ready and eager to listen to the jokes. Before the competition started, Randolf extended an offer to whomever thought he had the best joke to come forward and present it first.

Bjørn volunteered right away as he felt that his joke was really funny and wanted to make sure to tell it to Gunvor before she would get too tired from laughing.

Bjørn nervously approached the podium and presented his material which made the audience almost kill themselves with laughter. It took several minutes before everybody calmed down, except for Gunvor.

She just sat stoically in her seat, not even cracking a smile, staring back at Bjørn who was led away never to be seen again. The other contestants didn’t fare any better, as Gunvor just sat

there solemnly and without a smile. They were all led away never to be seen again.

The last contestant was Magnus who had the reputation of having a warped sense of humour. He slowly walked up to the podium thinking that he was actually walking to his execution. He stood on the podium, hesitated, stuttered, stammered, but presented the joke as best he could. When the punchline or what seemed to be the punchline was delivered, there was a collective moan throughout the audience. The joke, if you could call it that, was absolutely horrible, and everyone knew that he would be escorted away and killed like Bjørn. But wait! Gunvor started to chuckle. Not just a hee-hee chuckle, no, a real chuckle that grew into a full on guffaw. She was laughing so hard that she almost fell out of her seat.

Standing up while holding on to Randolf, she roared with laughter and said, “I just got Bjørn’s joke!”

East Central Saskatchewan crop report for June 16 to 22 The northern and western areas of the region received rain this week, improving moisture conditions in these areas. The southeast area of the region, however, hasn’t received the same rainfall as the rest of the region, which has reduced the topsoil moisture conditions relative to the rest of the region, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly crop report.

The Rose Valley area received the most precipitation in the region during the reporting period with

55 mm. The Saltcoats area received three mm; the Roblin area, five mm; Foam Lake, 13 mm; Bulyea, 27 mm; Raymore, 28 mm, and the Kenaston area, 45 mm.

Moisture conditions in the region improved slightly over the past week, especially in areas that have received a good amount of rainfall the past few weeks. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 62 per cent adequate, 37 per cent short and one per cent very short. Hay and pasture land topsoil moisture is rated as 54 per cent adequate, 41 per

Regionally, 60 per cent of the fall cereals, 62 per cent of the spring cereals, 44 per cent of the oilseed crops and 77 per cent of the pulse crops are at a normal

stage of development for this time of year. Thirtyseven per cent of the fall cereals, 38 per cent of the spring cereals, 55 per cent of the oilseed crops and 22 per cent of the pulse crops are behind in crop development. Farmers are busy spraying herbicides and insecticides, as well as hauling grain and scouting for insects and disease.

There have been a few isolated reports of reseeding due to damage from hail as well as flea beetle and cutworm feeding, the report concluded.

Clubroot Monitoring Program — Test your field for clubroot

By Raul Avila A.Ag, M.Sc., Crop Production Intern, Crops and Irrigation Branch Early detection of clubroot is important to keep spore levels low and reduce crop yield loss.

Early detection of clubroot through DNA-based testing can help guide proactive onfarm disease management strategies. Laboratories can detect spore levels of 1,000 spores per gram, which is considered lower than what may cause disease symptoms under field conditions.

Clubroot is an emerging disease in Saskatchewan.

This means that it is not present across the entire province and, when introduced, will initially be at low levels. To continue to better understand the distribution and severity of clubroot in Saskatchewan,

the ministry and our partners will be conducting in-field monitoring.

This year, we’re also ensuring farmers have the tools they need to detect clubroot on their farm at low levels through the 2020 fall clubroot soil testing program, offered by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture and SaskCanola. As part of this program, a producer can pick up a soil testing bag, collect soil from his or her field and submit it for testing at no cost.

All producer information will be kept confidential, and the legal land location will be shared with the appropriate rural municipality (RM) only when a positive test result is returned and a clubroot bylaw has been enacted. All findings of clubroot and the clubroot

pathogen will be added to the Saskatchewan Clubroot Distribution map (at an RM level) to raise awareness of the presence of clubroot and to guide proactive biosecurity and management decisions.

Because of the value that these test results will provide other farmers and the industry, SaskCanola will cover the $100 cost of each test.

How to get a soil test There are different ways that you can get your soil test: • Sign up online, and we will send a soil testing bag right to you; • Contact your local Ministry of Agriculture regional office; • Contact the SaskCanola office; or • Contact your local SARM Plant Heath Officer.

When to sample Soil samples should be collected in late summer or around swathing time. This is when clubroot galls start decomposing and releasing spores back to the soil.

Where to sample To reduce the risk of a false negative, it is important to collect soil from high clubroot risk areas. These areas include field entrances, hightraffic areas, water runs and low spots.

Invermay graduates among those to receive Saskatchewan youth apprenticeship industry scholarships The Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) has announced S a s k a t c h e w a n Yo u t h A p p r e n t i c e s h i p ( S YA ) Industry Scholarships for 100 graduating high school students in 72 communities across the province, according to a release.

Among those to receive scholarships were two graduates of Invermay School. Gavin Swiderski of Invermay, who plans to study as a welder/industrial mechanic (millwright) received the Breck Construction Scholarship.

Melony Koturbash of Rama, looking to pursue a career as a heavy duty equipment technician, was awarded the Nicholas Harold Korpan Scholarship.

Scholarship recipients must finish the SYA

program, which exposes students to opportunities in the skilled trades. Students complete 12 activities, including interviewing a journeyperson, researching and writing a report on a designated trade and completing the Young Worker Readiness Certificate Course. Students who complete SYA and register as apprentices in Saskatchewan within five years of graduation receive valuable benefits. Their apprenticeship registration fee is waived; Level 1 technical training tuition is waived; and they receive 300 trade time hours.

The scholarship program, launched in 2009 and overseen by the SATCC, relies on the continued investment of industry sponsors.

To date, 59 sponsors have invested almost $750,000 in the fund.

The Government of Saskatchewan has also invested through the

Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunities Scholarship, bringing total contributions to nearly $1.28 million.

“The Commission board of directors is proud of industry’s significant investment in the SYA Industry Scholarship fund,” said Drew Tiefenbach, SATCC board chair. “Their contributions ensure we can continue to encourage students to pursue apprenticeships and careers in the skilled trades.

We appreciate their generosity and support.”

Currently, more than 300 schools and more than 4,000 students are registered in the SYA program. Participation continues to grow. Student enrollment in 2019-20 increased by 26 per cent over 2018-19.

Sturgis Kindergarten class encouraged to “Imagine with all your heart” Ten Sturgis Composite School kindergarten students were acknowledged in a special unique way through a Zoom presentation. The traditional graduation was not possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic with restrictions placed by the government.

Families and friends were encouraged to log in and watch the Zoom presentation on June 15.

Lisa Serdachny, teacher, spoke briefly, acknowledged everyone and highlighted some of the students’ activities through the year.

During the Zoom presentation each student was shown during the Zoom meeting and then presented their diploma by their parents. Each family group

received a certificate from their child and Serdachny thanked them for all their help and support during online learning.

After diplomas were presented, a toast to the graduations followed.

“In a world where you can be anything, be kind. Imagine with all your heart, believe with all your mind and achieve with all your might. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think. Congratulations kindergarten graduates,” said Serdachny.

Through the year before the COVID-19 pandemic the students enjoyed many activities that kicked off with a Family Engagement N i g h t h e l d i n O c t o b e r.

Each student made a time capsule and added items inside it. Families contributed notes and students completed different centres to create materials to add to their time capsule.

Christmas Past Program held in the month of December. Students had a wagon ride, made a craft and did a scavenger hunt in the museum galleries to see how Christmas was celebrated in the past. They also toured the Godfrey Dean Art Gallery to showcase where students could create art to display in the spring/summer of 2020.

The Grade 11 English students visited the class, read the stories they created and encouraged students to become authors too.

C o o k i e s w i t h Kindergarten held in December featured three grandmas and one mom who came and made

cookies with the students in the Home Ec room. Each student got to take home a bag full of cookies, a recipe book of the cookies made and decorated gingerbread cookies for a treat that morning.

Students travelled to Swan River for swimming in the month of January.

Kindergarten students were accompanied by students from Grade 1 to 6. Students swam at the pool, then had lunch and a treat from Dairy Queen before returning home.

Kelsey Newman, Lakyn Seerey’s mom, came and read to the students from a book on Calculus for kids and talked to them about her job as Sturgis Composite High School math teacher.

J o e l a n d a To w n s e n d , Ayden’s mom, came and baked bread with the class, as she makes her own homemade bread. Each student got to take their own loaf of bread home and there was one loaf that the class shared.

In March, the class began celebrating Colour

Days. Every kindergarten day, the class highlighted a colour and students dressed in that colour. The class shared a snack that was that colour and did lots of fun activities around that colour theme.

Do you owe more than what your car is worth?

The Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) would like to educate consumers on vehicle negative equity. Vehicle

negative equity occurs when a consumer owes more for a vehicle than what it is worth, according to a release. Vehicle negative

equity often takes place because of the lure of extended term loans (ETLs).

Consumers can purchase the vehicle of their dreams,

with no money down, for a monthly, bi-weekly or weekly payment that appears to be affordable. Traditionally, four to five-year vehicle

loans were the norm, said the release. Today, it’s common for consumers to finance their vehicle over seven to eight years, which is a significant amount of time for a product that begins depreciating the second it’s driven off the lot.

“While getting an extended term loan to help finance a vehicle over a period of seven or eight years may seem like a good idea, having these loans can result in negative equity when a consumer wants to trade in their vehicle prior to paying the loan off,” said Denny Huyghebaert, FCAA deputy director of consumer protection. “We have seen situations where a consumer has traded in their old vehicle for a $70,000 new truck, but due to the debt still owing on their previous vehicle, the consumer actually had to pay $110,000 to acquire the new truck.”

How to Avoid Negative Equity:

• Consider a shorter term loan to minimize the possibility of being in a negative equity position.

• Make a sizeable cash down payment when purchasing the vehicle.

• Pay off existing vehicle loans to avoid rolling negative equity forward into a new vehicle purchase.

• Don’t just focus on the monthly payment when purchasing a vehicle, consider the total price of the vehicle and the length of the loan.

• Have a vehicle budget in mind and stick to it.

Preeceville Graduation class “changed the future” Emily Prestie of the Preecevile High School graduation class was chosen by her classmates to give the valictorian addess. She spoke to her fellow classmates through a video that was recorded on June 5.

Her recorded speech was seen in a video presentation shown at the Preeceville Elevator for family and friends on June 20. The video also featured all the graduates, families and their special graduation ceremony on June 5.

“Here I am, about to deliver my valedictorian address, but it won’t be to an arena full of family and friends, with my fellow grads on the stage beside me,” said Prestie.

“This pandemic has changed everything about our lives and taken from us so many things that we once took for granted. So, this speech will be like no other valediction’s because this graduation day isn’t like any of the rest.

“Writing a speech like this is supposed to make a person think back to the beginning of our story as brand new students when

we were wide-eyed children so anxious to be in kindergarten and then to all of the moments in between that lead up to the last few, especially the last months of Grade 12, building memories together. Not having all those opportunities felt surreal. I know that for a long time, we all mourned our losses: the tournaments not played, the recitals not performed, the classes not finished. Our high school story did not get the ending that we imagined.

“Instead, we had isolation, not classrooms and being together, no freedom to be with our friends, no May graduation, and no fretting over final exams one last time. We didn’t know just how much we would miss the comfort of our school and classmates until we realized that when we walked out of Preeceville School on March 19, it would be for the last time.

“But even though those last all-important memories have been snatched from us, we are resilient enough, and during this pause in our lives, we have had a rare opportunity to embrace many

life lessons. We learned to be thankful for the constants in our lives. Our community, here and global, has reevaluated the importance of human connections, compassion and taking care of each other.

“Not a day passes without us hearing about unique ways people are kind and supportive of one another.

Right here, in our town, the people have rallied and found a way to give us this graduation experience, and celebrate us, even if it’s from a distance. After all, the people in small towns like this one take care of their own.

“We’ve learned that even though our generation was born into an era dependent on technology, it is not a substitute for those pivotal moments in the classroom, for gathering to socialize with friends, or a hug from someone you care about, all things we took for granted.

“We have learned to be grateful. The irreplaceable things in our lives are our family and friends, and making every day count together. Over the years, our parents, grandparents

“We can all agree that by adapting to life during this pandemic, our eyes have been opened to what is truly important. And if these

realizations are our focus going forward, we will be okay on the other side of this, and we will get the happy ending to our story, instead of the cliffhanger we have right now.

“So, my fellow graduates, we are that class, the one that changed the history of what graduation might be for a while.”

count on. My hope is that the graduating class is as fortunate as I have

been in developing good working relationship with other projects and

organizations. There are always an incredible number of volunteers involved. As graduates move forward in life in whatever community they may reside in, my advice is not to forget and to help out and volunteer where they can.”

The message for this graduation speech was perhaps from a slightly different perspective.

Tonn feels strongly that the values and lessons taught to graduates their whole life is based on some very simple concepts which will lead to their happiness and success. There is also the realization that happiness a n d s u c c e s s w i l l d i ff e r for everyone. The basic

concept of a good work ethic and working hard at whatever they choose to do will go a long way in life. It is important for the youth of today to strive to keep the idea of a strong work ethic in place.

Education is important, educating themselves in whatever field they have an interest in, as the power of learning is never wasted. Take time to spend with family and friends, work hard but find a balance by doing things with the people who are important in their lives.

“It is important to show respect and be good to others, say hello, please and thank you, I love you and, I’m sorry. These

little things all make a huge difference in other people’s lives. Be strong and stand up for yourself, don’t let anyone knock you down. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes as long as you work really hard to learn from them and correct them if you can.

Remember the idea of never looking back but n e v e r f o rg e t t i n g w h e r e you came from. I received some very sound advice when times were tough and it was ‘don’t look back, you are not going that way,’” Tonn concluded At the end of the day her simple wish for the graduating class was that this life becomes all that they want it to be.

Crossroads CU reports successful year The Crossroads Credit Union’s 12th annual meeting was originally scheduled for April 20, but had to be rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the rescheduled meeting on June 22 at the Canora branch reception area, Crossroads’ representatives reported on “building mutually rewarding relationships that drive growth and prosperity for us all.”

The message from the board was presented by Walter Ostoforoff, board chair. “ We l c o m e t o t h e Crossroads annual general meeting,” said Ostoforoff. “ We ’ v e h a d t o c h a n g e our method of delivery in order to protect the staff and members from being compromised by the virus, so that’s why we’re having it here at the Canora branch.”

He reported that 2019 operations produced a financially successful year end.

“We were able to pay out members’ equity in three years instead of four years as planned,” he said. “As well, we will be paying out more than $350,000 of patronage dividends for 2019. Our success was due to several factors, basically the economy, our staff, and most importantly, you the members. Our staff has been offered more opportunities to become educated,

inspired and empowered.

They have responded by providing better service and more valuable financial advice to the members. Thank you to all the staff, and thank you to the management for keeping Crossroads on course.”

Ostoforoff highlighted the emphasis placed on giving back to the community at Crossroads. “ T h r o u g h t h e Community Investment Fund, $36,500 has been donated to various community organizations.

The largest donation was $15,000 to be given to, as selected by members, the Sturgis Curling Club.”

Since mid-March, Crossroads staff has adapted to supply safe service to the membership after the arrival of the pandemic.

“Thank you to CEO Jeff Bisschop and all the staff for their efforts,” said Ostoforoff. “Thank you to the members for their cooperation and patience. We hope more normal service may be restored in the future. Let’s stay safe.

“COVID-19 has changed many of our plans. We ask that you stay the course and continue to support Crossroads throughout these challenging times. Together we can continue to be a successful organization. Thank you very much and stay safe.”

“We have seen a trend from members to do their day-to-day banking digitally,” reported Bisschop.

“This shift saw a significant increase in 2019.

Crossroads continues to invest in its digital channels. This investment allows staff to shift from providing transactional support to easing the membership into these new channels, while at the same time providing expert advice and continuing to help you make your decisions at each of your financial crossroads.

“An improved patronage program has now been implemented by our Board of Directors that will reward member loyalty and allocate payments directly into your deposit accounts.”

Bisschop fully expects further challenges in the future, including continuing to deal with COVID-19.

Rhonda Fullawka, manager of finance and risk, presented the report of the auditor and financial statement.

“We had a very profitable year in 2019, as our member equity grew by $2.25 million or 9.6 per cent,” said Fullawka. “Our assets grew 1.16 per cent or $3.48 million.”

Election results were announced at the meeting, with four directors elected to serve on the board. In the central district, Calvin H o m e n i u k a n d Wa l t e r Ostoforoff were elected, while Dale Zubko won by acclamation in the northern district and Duane Sweatman was acclaimed

in the western district.

The meeting marked a milestone for Crossroads.

It was the final meeting for Gary Herbert, who has decided to retire after serving for 36 years on the board of directors.

O s t o f o r o ff o ff e r e d a tribute to Herbert and his contributions over the years.

“Gary has served the board wholeheartedly with his member-first philosophy,” said Ostoforoff. “He has been an integral part of the board as Canora Credit Union grew and expanded over the years and has since become Crossroads Credit Union. On behalf of the board and the entire membership, we thank you for your well-informed discussion at the board table and your long service.

Your wisdom and humour will be missed. We wish you the best of health as you pursue more personal interests. Thank you very much Gary.”

Herbert was presented with a 35-year pin in recognition of his service to Crossroads Credit Union.

At his last meeting as a board member, Herbert presented a convincing case to attract future board candidates. “ Yo u c o u l d i m a g i n e that one would tire of the routine. But the service of a director is never boring,” he said. “There are always new issues coming to light, directional plans to be made and implemented, and of course all the great people one meets along the way, people with novel ideas and yet sharing the same vision, people committed to the CU movement and the co-operative spirit. I would strongly recommend to anyone that is a member of our credit union family who has public service in mind, to put their name forward and help guide our institution into the future.

Outreach and support during the COVID-19 Crisis While recent restrictions surrounding gatherings and travel, and the need for physical distancing and restricted contact levied by government and health authorities have been essential in protecting and preserving the health and safety of everyone, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Regina recognizes that these same restrictions which protect us, also create additional

emotional, social and spiritual burdens, stated a release.

In particular, this time of social isolation makes it challenging for individuals who may lack adequate social support networks to access needed grocery items and medications. Social isolation, coupled with fears and anxiety regarding the pandemic itself, can also create emotional and spiritual challenges that can be difficult to

manage alone.

In response, the Archdiocese of Regina has launched two outreach projects that seek to alleviate some of these burdens and provide a point of safe social connection between neighbours, continued the release.

The Archdiocese of Regina Good Samaritan Project has organized volunteers in Regina and throughout southern Saskatchewan

who are willing to reach out to people in need of groceries or essential items but are ill, immobile or quarantined, and not able to leave their home.

Individuals in need of this service are invited to contact the project where dispatchers will set them up with a volunteer who can help. We are committed to operating in such a way that the Health Canada guidelines, and provincial public health orders

from our chief medical officer and provincial government are strictly adhered to.

Oldest business in Preeceville The following was taken from an article by Curtis Pollock on February 19, 1987 and information provided by Dalton family members.

Dalton Electric Ltd. is a family business first opened in 1928 by Frank and Anna Dalton, who operated a garage and electrical service.

The couple had four children: Jack, Mary, Bernice and Murray.

Frank was active as a machinist. Earlier the Kipp Kelly Company of Winnipeg had named three towns wanting power: Benito, Delisle and Preeceville. They had suggested Preeceville be the one to get power and in the fall of 1927, Frank entered into negotiation with the Village of Preeceville where was no electricity and had a population of 414.

A bylaw for the 10-year

electrical franchise was adopted by the Village council on January 23, 1928. The plan was to be in operation no later than September 1 that year.

On July 1, Jack Dalton and lineman Jack Brooks arrived to begin construction of the plant buildings and the power lines. The building was constructed by Lars Skogen. The site for the plant was supplied by the Town for the duration of the contract at a rental fee of $100 per year.

All equipment was purchased from the Kipp Kelly Co. and the five diesel electrical generating units were shipped in one box at a freight cost of $98.

Water for cooling the plant was hauled from the Assiniboine River in the summer and from blocks of ice hauled from Annie Laurie

Dalton Electric Ltd. started its family business in 1928. Frank and Anna Dalton operated a garage and electrical service during the early years.

During the summers in 1928 to 30, Frank was involved in road construction in southern Saskatchewan and Jack managed the power plant and wiring. When Preeceville Electric Light Works first began service in the community it was on a dusk to midnight basis, operating from 6 a.m. to 12 Noon for washing and ironing on

Mondays and Tuesdays. The 24-hour service began in 1932 and Preeceville was the first town north of Yorkton to operate on a 24-hoiur basis.

There were 56 customers at the time the system was inaugurated. By 1948 it had expanded to 178 customers. After two consecutive 10-year terms of supplying electricity to the town, Frank Dalton sold it to the Saskatchewan Power

Corporation.

On termination of the contract with the Town, the Daltons purchased the old plant site. Frank and his two sons Jack and Murray branched into a wiring, plumbing, heating and electrical business called Dalton Electric Ltd. Frank retired in 1948 and died in 1970.

Jack and Murray continued that family business with Jack retiring in 1986.

Murray and his wife Dorothy owned the company and employed the couple’s three sons Dwayne, Delwyn and Derrin, two son-in-laws, Doug Decksheimer and Walter Burym and daughter-in-law, Adine Dalton. as well as Don Bocking of Lintlaw and Peter Walther of Preeceville.

Through the years the business had expanded into three buildings to incorporate

the expanding business.

Dalton Electric was bought out by Murray’s son Delwyn who operated the business in Preeceville until he and his wife Joanne moved to Red Deer, Alta. in 2006. Murray formed Murray Dalton Plumbing in Preeceville in 2007 and retired in 2015 at the age of 85.

Derrin Dalton, another son of Murray’s, formed Precision Plumbing in the early 1990s in Preeceville until the early 2000s when he moved to Red Deer, Alta. and started a new company, Dalco Services Inc. Dwayne Dalton, oldest son of Murray, went into the ministry and also worked as a company rep for his brother Derrin. Brother-in-law Doug Decksheimer joined a publicly traded company in Red Deer and is its Canada-wide marketing manager.

YAGELNESKY, Jean - Jean Yagelnesky, beloved wife of Bert Yagelnesky of Yorkton and formerly of the Stenen District, SK, passed away at Jowsey House, Yorkton & District Nursing Home on June 19, 2020, at the age of 82 years. Jean was born on September 5, 1937, in New York, New York, USA, to Peter and Anna (Balabun) Scheschuk. At the age of two, with her mom, dad and older brother, Stanley, they arrived in Canada and settled north of Danbury, SK. Jean attended Swan Bluff School up to grade eight, followed by Sturgis Composite High School where she completed her grade eleven education. Jean and Bert Yagelnesky were married on November 13, 1954. They settled on the Yagelnesky homestead, north of Stenen, SK, where they raised their two children, Larry and Lavern. During the early farming years, they focused on grain and livestock. In the later years, they concentrated more on grain farming. Jean and Bert took great pride in maintaining a beautiful yard, manicured lawn, trees and flower gardens. Jean enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, sewing, and spending time with family and friends. Together, Jean and Bert enjoyed camping and fishing with friends. They retired from farming in 2000 and moved to Yorkton in 2002. While in Yorkton, they frequented coffee row where they met new friends. Jean was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Anna; son, Larry; and brothers, Stanley (Helen) and Ludvick. Left to mourn Jean are her husband, Bert; son, Lavern; and brother, Harry (Pauline); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. In Jean’s honour, a Funeral Service was held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 25, 2020, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Rev. Miles Russell of the Grace United Church, Sturgis, SK, officiating. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to a Charity of Donor’s Choice, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Jean Yagelnesky. Town waste water project on schedule T h e T o w n o f Preeceville Wastewater Treatment Facility Project is still on schedule for construction to be complete this fall.

On June 23 the Townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Project Steering Committee held an onsite construction meeting and toured the construction site.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The new cell berms are almost complete, the piping between cells is being installed and construction has started on the mechanical/blower building. As well, the new force main installation is approximately 30 per cent complete,â&#x20AC;? said Lorelei Karcha, Town of Preeceville administrator.

The Town of Preeceville Wastewater Treatment Facility Project is on schedule for construction to be complete this fall.
