Co-op store edges closer to opening in Preeceville The building process on the new Preeceville Home Centre, C-store and lumber store has made tremendous progress since the initial sod turning ceremony at the card lock location on August 12, 2019.

It started back in 2005 when the Town of Preeceville first acquired the parcel of property. It was utilized as housing for local physicians for a brief time before the Federated Gateway Co-op purchased it from the Town. In 2012,

the Co-op put up a card lock facility with intentions of building a new Home Centre, C-Store and lumber store.

“The original project started with almost 10 months of planning before we got to the sod turning and the beginning of the building process,” said Brad Chambers, general manager for Gateway Co-op. “We had to make sure that it was feasible and that there was a market to support the store. We are very proud

and excited that we are supported by many dedicated members that believe in Coop,” he said.

Currently the paving process has begun, causing some delays with the card lock being temporarily shut down to allow for the paving process. The delay is expected to be short with operations getting back to normal as soon as the paving can be concluded. The paving runs from the back of the C-store to the street.

“Members can still purchase

their fuel at the home hardware location as well as receiving it in the bulk form,” said Chambers.

The propane tank has been installed with some electrical work still required. The interior of the C-Store still has electrical, plumbing, shelving, fixtures and some drywall and painting that need to be done.

COVID-19 case update for Saskatchewan According to information from the government of Saskatchewan website, as of June 21, there were 20 new cases of COVID-19 in Saskatchewan to report, bringing the provincial total to 746.

Eighteen of the new cases are in the South region and two are in the Far North region. Of the 746 reported COVID-19 cases in Saskatchewan, 88 are considered active.

Fourteen new cases first reported on June 18 were connected to an outbreak that has been declared by the Saskatchewan Health Authority in two Hutterite communities in the Rural

Municipality of Maple Creek. Two members of a rural household in the area initially tested positive for COVID-19 last week. Contact tracing is underway.

Cases are being investigated for connection to interprovincial travel to Alberta, as well as travel in the area.

Of the 746 reported COVID-19 cases in Saskatchewan, 88 are considered active.

A total of 643 people have recovered.

Three people are in intensive care: one in Saskatoon and two in the South. There are no other

COVID-19-related inpatient hospitalizations.

Of the 746 cases in the province: • 156 cases are travellers; • 452 are community contacts (including mass gatherings); • 96 have no known exposures; and • 42 are under investigation by local public health.

Overall in Saskatchewan: • 53 cases are health care workers; however, the source of the infections may not be related to health care in all instances.

• 301 of the cases are from the Far North, 185 are from the Saskatoon area, 113 from the North, 80 from

the Regina area, 53 from the South and 12 from the Central region.

• 108 cases involve people 19 years of age and under, while the remainder are adults.

• 258 cases are in the 20 to 39 age range; 234 are in the 40 to 59 age range; 125 are in the 60 to 79 age range; and 21 are in the 80plus range.

• 51 per cent of the cases are females and 49 per cent are males.

• 13 deaths related to COVID-19 have been reported to date.

So far, 60,060 COVID-19 tests have been performed in Saskatchewan. As of

June 19, when other provincial and national numbers were available from the Public Health Agency of Canada, Saskatchewan’s per capita rate was 44,955 people tested per million population. The national rate was 63,390 people tested per million population.

COVID-19 Testing Testing for COVID-19 is available to anyone currently working outside the home or anyone returning to work as part of the Re-Open Saskatchewan plan.

Testing is also available to: • Those being admitted to acute care for more than 24 hours, including expectant

mothers.

• Immunocompromised individuals and their health care providers.

Re-open Saskatchewan enters phase 4 The date for the next phase of the Re-Open Saskatchewan plan was June 22, according to the Saskatchewan Government website The first part of the plan allows day camps, outdoor pools and spray parks to open. Seasonal/recreational outdoor sports and activities will also be allowed to open.

The second part of phase 4 with dates for reopening to be announced will be indoor pools, indoor rinks, libraries, museums, galleries, movie theatres, casinos and bingo halls. The allowable size of indoor public

and private gatherings will increase to 30 people.

All businesses and customers are expected to practice physical distancing.

Activities scheduled for the first part of Phase 4 of the plan to re-open the province can get underway including: child and youth day camps, outdoor pools and splash pads, and outdoor sports and activities.

Residents are advised to check with the local operator of the activities noted above regarding availability. Some municipalities have indicated that activities, such as outdoor pools,

may remain closed.

A date for the second part of Phase 4 will be announced at a later time and will include indoor pools, rinks, libraries, museums, galleries, movie theatres, casinos and bingo halls.

The following recommendations should remain in place through all five phases: • Protective measures for vulnerable populations.

• Individuals should continue working from home if they can do so effectively.

• Physical distancing must be maintained, wherever possible.

• People must stay at

home when they are sick.

• Vulnerable individuals, such as seniors and those with underlying health conditions, should continue to exercise caution and minimize high-risk exposures, such as public outings.

• Personal hygiene will continue to be a key prevention measure.

• Enhanced cleaning and disinfections should take

place in workplaces, public spaces and recreational facilities.

Although the public health order regarding the size of gatherings does not apply to businesses and workplaces, they are expected to follow the recommended public health measures, including: physical distancing for staff and clients; regular cleaning

and disinfections; frequent hand washing and sanitizing; use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) where available and appropriate; and keeping staff who demonstrate or report COVID-19 symptoms out of the workplace.

Special care and personal care homes must ensure that each staff member works in only one facility.

Guidelines announced for students’ safe return to classrooms in September The Government of Saskatchewan has released the Primary and Secondary Educational Institution Guidelines for the return to classroom learning in the fall.

The guidelines have been developed to support Saskatchewan’s education sector in planning for student and staff safety as the delivery of in-classroom learning resumes this September, stated a release.

The school year is set to start as early as September 1, based on local school division calendars.

“As we return to normal activities within our daily

lives, we want to ensure that our school communities have time to prepare for new health and safety requirements,” said Gordon Wyant, deputy premier and education minister. “These guidelines reinforce minimizing physical contact while maintaining a school atmosphere that’s as normal and comfortable as possible.”

The Educational Institution Guidelines were developed under the direction of Saskatchewan’s chief medical health officer, and with the help of the Response Planning Team.

that operators of provincial Prekindergarten to Grade 12 schools can plan for school to resume as previously scheduled this fall.

Parents and caregivers have been asked to monitor their children for any signs or symptoms of illness. COVID-19 infections in children tend to be mild and similar to other viral respiratory infections. If any symptoms are present, both students and school staff remain home.

Schools have been asked to increase sanitation measures and continue to promote proper hygiene practices. This includes the availability of hand sanitizer wherever possible, establishing clear protocols for bringing supplementary school materials such as backpacks and school supplies in and out of schools, and planning for minimized contact among students and staff as much as possible.

As this is a highly evolving situation, the guidelines may be updated and adjusted depending on the impact of COVID-19 and the feedback of education partners in our province prior to the beginning of the school year.

Canora/Sturgis RCMP Detachment activity report for June 11 to June 18

By Sgt. Derek Friesen Canora-Sturgis RCMP The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 53 calls for service during the reporting period, including one assault, four breach of peace, four 911 hang-ups, one disturbing the peace, one impaired driving, one lost and found, one Child Welfare Act, 20 traffic, one harassment, one vehicle

collision, one theft under $5,000, four suspicious persons, and three Liquor Act complaints.

On June 11 at 2:13 a.m.

Canora/Sturgis RCMP were called to a vehicle on fire in Preeceville.

The Preeceville Fire Department attended and extinguished the blaze.

On June 13 at 2:30 p.m.

Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to an assault

complaint in Canora. The suspect fled prior to police arrival but was later located and arrested by the Wadena RCMP. The suspect was charged with assault and break and enter. As the suspect was on a Conditional Sentence Order at the time of the assault he was remanded into custody for court in Yorkton on June 15.

On June 13 at 9:21 p.m.

Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of two missing children at Canora Beach. The children returned home on their own a short time later after the game of Mantracker was over.

On June 15 Canora/ Sturgis RCMP received a complaint of young children operating off-road vehicles in the village of Buchanan. Canora-Sturgis

RCMP want to remind the public that it’s against the law for children to operate off-road vehicles on public roadways and that miniature versions of offroad vehicles are only permitted for use on private property.

On June 16 at 9:16 p.m.

Canora/Sturgis RCMP received a traffic complaint of a vehicle swerving into oncoming traffic on

Highway No. 9. Yorkton RCMP assisted with this complaint and was able to locate the suspect vehicle in Yorkton. A male driver from Manitoba was found to be intoxicated and was subsequently charged with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol over 80 mg per cent and operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol.

Emergency services resume at Preeceville The emergency services at the Preeceville and District Health Centre have resumed effective June 18 and normal operations are now in place, stated the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA).

The SHA is appreciative of the co-operation and support of the community during this temporary disruption of emergency services.

“I think we were very fortunate not to have anything serious happen while

the emergency services were closed,” stated Stacey Strykowski, Preeceville and District Health Action Committee.

“Every day that was closed, put our residents in danger. I’d like to thank all the residents for voicing their concerns. The Facebook group of rural people certainly helped reverse these decisions.

The government and the SHA saw that this decision was premature and unwarranted,” she concluded.

East Central Saskatchewan Crop Report for June 9 to 15 Strong winds caused damage to emerging crops and continued to dry out t h e s o i l , m a k i n g e m e rgence of later seeded crops like canola patchy.

The wind prevented many farmers from spraying for weeds and for insect pests like flea beetles

and cutworms, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly crop report. There have been reports of reseeding due to reduced emergence and flea beetle damage.

Most of the east-central region received some rainfall during the reporting

period, but more is needed to support crop development. The area southeast of Humboldt received the most rain with 41.6 mm.

The Esterhazy, Kelliher and Bethune areas received eight mm, the Craik a r e a 11 m m , t h e F o a m Lake area 20 mm and the

Wynyard area 36 mm.

Drying winds this week reduced topsoil moisture conditions in the region.

Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 57 per cent adequate, 42 per cent short and one per cent very short. Hay and pasture land topsoil moisture is

Highway No. 9 to Yorkton among those to get passing lanes The Saskatchewan government has announced funding for up to 50 new sets of passing lanes along provincial highways over the next two years.

The province announced the infrastructure spending in the 2020-2021 budget on June 15, according to a release.

The province said it is spending $715 million on highway safety and efficiency, with the passing lanes being a large part of that.

Some of the project planned for 2020 include:

•Three sets of passing lanes on Highway No. 9 between Canora and Yorkton; •Three sets of passing lanes on Highway No. 10 between Melville and Yorkton; •Nine sets of passing lanes and repaving on Highways 6 and 39; •Four sets of passing lanes and repaving on Highway No. 7 between Rosetown and Kindersley; •Two sets of passing lanes and repaving of Highway No. 5, and •Planning for a short section of twinning of

Highway No. 5, between Saskatoon and the junction of Highway No. 2.

The province is also planning for passing planes to be constructed in 2021 on

Highways No. 16, No.14, No. 12, No. 3 and No. 2.

The budget also included $52 million to upgrade and replace bridges and culverts, concluded the release.

Crop development is normal to behind for this time of year. Development of later seeded crops is delayed due to lack of moisture and cool temperatures in some areas. Fifty-four per cent of the fall cereals, 62 per cent of the spring cereals, 53 per cent of the oilseed crops and 75 per cent of the pulse crops are at their normal stages of development for this time

of year. Crop conditions range from fair to good in the region, with 39 per cent of the canola, 56 per of the spring wheat and 41 per cent of the lentils being in good condition at this time.

The majority of crop damage this week was due to strong winds, dry conditions, flea beetles and cutworms. There were also reports of frost and localized flooding in some areas of the region, the report concluded.

Canadian grain exports reach new weekly record It is interesting how well the Canadian system can move grain when the commodity isn’t competing with other higher value loads as much as normal.

It was reported recently that Canada set a new weekly wheat export record in week 40 of the 2019-20 campaign, according to the Canadian Grain Commission.

According to a Western Producer article terminal elevators shipped 926,000 tonnes of wheat and durum, shattering the previous record of 691,000 tonnes set the same week the previous crop year.

The numbers are interesting because it shows two things; one, there is obvious demand for wheat.

That isn’t surprising given the COVID-19 pandemic. You only had to go to a grocery store in Saskatchewan over the

last couple of months to know there were times the flour shelves have been scantily stocked, if n o t c o m p l e t e l y e m p t y.

People recognize flour as a key food product should there be general food shortages and stocked up on their home supply.

So it stands to reason the demand for wheat on a worldwide basis would be stronger than usual this spring as importing countries add to their stocks of the commodity to ensure there is enough bread to feed their citizens.

But, that is of course only half the answer as to why the record movement

has occurred. It’s important to have demand, but there have been times in the recent past where there were sales to meet and the system couldn’t move the grain from farm to port.

The bottleneck has largely been the rail system.

So why are railways able to move the big numbers now?

Simply put, there is greater rail capacity right n o w. I t ’s n o t t h a t r a i l companies are necessarily making handling grain as a higher priority.

It’s also not because the system has added capacity in terms of rolling

stock.

There are simply less forestry and oil and gas products moving, so those products are not competing for rail cars due to COVID-19.

Of course this sort of dual anomaly will not last.

Demand fueled by fear of shortages, or hording at a national level will not continue once the pandemic is brought under some semblance of control by better science.

When the science does advance to create vaccines, or better treatments for COVID-19, the demand for oil, gas and other products will return to more normal levels, and that will have rail companies dedicating their rolling stock to the higher valued products, pinching the supply of cars and engines to move grain.

The blip shows what can happen, but it will not be a new norm.

Kamsack veterinarian urges increased police funding The purpose of my letter is to register my sincere opposition to the “defund the police” lobby. I empathize with the family of Mr. Floyd, regarding the excessive use of force. Instead of defunding the police, I implore our government to increase funding. With the increased funding we can ensure our police force is well-staffed, well-equipped and welltrained. The funding will also allow for sufficient civilian oversight.

Canada’s police are essential for a free, safe and secure society.

Reducing funding will not make our communities safe. Given the current environment with Covid-19, which

has resulted in vast unemployment across our country, many families find themselves in a difficult situation. Now is not the time for defunding our police force.

As indicated on the Stats Canada website, as the unemployment rate rises so does the rate of homicides. Given this positive correlation, a reduction in funding would put countless individuals in harm’s way, making our neighbourhoods more dangerous than ever.

There are several ways to improve the finances of our police force. The first of these i s o v e r t i m e . Wo r k i n g overtime does nothing to reduce the number

o f 9 11 c a l l s . C u t t i n g budgets for overtime likewise does nothing to reduce the need for it. If staffing levels were sufficient (including times when officers are on mandatory training, desk d u t y, a n d s u s p e n d e d ) then officers would not be required to work overtime. This would save the department millions, which could be reallocated to ensure proper staffing and training. Excessive overtime results in an inefficient and stressed police force, which is detrimental to optimum performance.

Understaffing is known to be associated with increased absenteeism and burnout, high staff turnover, administrative

and communication bottlenecks and backlogs, increased public complaints and poor safety statistics, as well as excessive overtime, in any organization or business.

The interests of society will not be served by cutting police budgets.

In the event we call 911, we want to know that there is someone available to respond within a reasonable time.

Our greatest concern is not whether or not a criminal is apprehended.

Our concern is for our o ff i c e r s ’ s a f e t y. T h e y need to be adequately equipped to do their job e ff i c i e n t l y a n d e ff e c tively. Our media has completely ignored this issue. Have we so easily

forgotten all the officers who have died in the line of duty? Do we forget the contributions of constables like Heidi Stevenson who lost her life this year defending the people of Nova Scotia? It grieves me to think who will answer the call the next time there is a mass murder or a terrorist attack. With an ill-equipped police force I fear for the lives of our brave men and women in uniform.

Our police and military officers experience a great deal in the line of duty. We need to provide them with exceptional support services. It is unreasonable to ask so much of them and then abandon them in their

time of need.

C e r t a i n l y, w e n e e d to address the socioeconomic root causes of criminal activity. However, I am concerned that we are becoming a society where criminals have free reign to operate with impunity.

In interesting times such as those we are currently experiencing, policing becomes even more important. In the interests of safe and secure society, I urge the Government of Canada to give our police services the priority they deserve by increasing their funding.

Book promoting mental health dialogue among men Calvin Daniels Yorkton This Week A new book hopes to do its part to open the conversation around men and mental health.

M E N t a l H e a l t h : I t ’s Time to Talk; written by Allan Kehler, tells the true stories of prairie men; including Chris Beaudry, former assistant coach of the Humboldt Broncos, “who have persevered through various issues of mental health. Together, they put a voice to topics including masculinity, mental illness, addiction, and suicide,” details the author’s website at www.outfromtheshadows.ca But, why did Kehler think a book looking at mental health and men was worth writing?

“Many men spend their entire lives hiding their feelings, learning from the action, or rather, inaction, of their fathers, mentors, and friends that when it comes to mental health, vulnerability equals weakness,” he said. “Statistics show that men are far less likely to ask for help than women, and too many men are suffering in silence because of this deeply-rooted societal stigma.

“The perception of what a ‘man’ looks like and how he is supposed to act has existed for generations.

Human programming surrounding the idea of masculinity influences boys. Boys were training to be men, and men were supposed to be physically strong, ruthlessly competitive, confident, and stoic at all times. “ B o y s w e r e n ’t o f t e n taught how to recognize and talk about their feelings; they were taught to ‘be a man’ and suppress their emotions. Anger, on the other hand, seemed to be a perfectly acceptable emotion for a man to feel, as the act of expressing aggression was more in line with the ‘tough guy’ mentality.

“Kids are always watching. If we can’t talk about this stuff why would they?”

Kehler said he found as he began to gather stories for the book there were commonalties in what he was hearing.

“There was a common theme in the interviews,” he said. “Men were afraid of judgement, perception of being weak, their reputation, or worse, sympathy. One of the men, Eric Harder, said he felt like hands would push him away. However, it was the complete opposite. People welcomed him with open

arms. In other words, what men thought would happen did not, and many were left scratching their heads wondering why they suffered in silence for so long.”

For Kehler the latest book, he has authored four previous ones, is a deeply personal one, at least in terms of motivation to write it. He said he wanted the book to send a message that people “are not alone in our struggles, and secondly, we were not meant to fight our battles alone.”

It goes deeper for Kehler.

“My own struggles with mental illness began at the age of 14, and intensified at 17,” he said. “I was given numerous labels over the next few years along with various pharmaceuticals.

Throughout this time the world was always my stage. While I smiled on the outside I was in pain on the inside. So I know what it feels to suffer in silence.

“But, I also know what it feels like to be vulnerable, put a voice to my pain and be free from it.

As a kid I did not choose to struggle with mental illness or addiction, and in the same way I did not choose to become a motivational speaker. However, I believe that our voice is our greatest tool and I wanted to help others find their voice.”

Over the years Kehler met others who faced the same challenges which added inspiration in terms of doing the book.

“I have met a lot of men who had been carrying their pain for too long,” he said.

“I began to wonder, ‘Why does it have to get so bad before we as men ask for help? Why do some of the headlines read ‘Women Seek Help. Men Die’?”

“It was my hopes that through a book like this, I could answer these questions. I have always believed that there is nothing more powerful than someone’s story so I decided that this was the best approach to take.”

But with the subject of mental health often being avoided by men, Kehler had to get them talking to share their stories. He said it was a challenge to write someone else’s story.

“After interviewing these men I had to transcribe our conversation, but then I thought, ‘Who am I to edit someone’s story?’ It was also important for me to do justice to their story,” he said.

“The most difficult interview was Ed Andres,

Justin died by suicide, but I knew that Ed had so much value and insight to offer as a father having lost his son. While it was painful for both of us, it was also rewarding and felt good to speak openly about such a significant loss.

“My wife, Tanya, was the one who made the book make sense. She spent countless hours editing and providing strong structure and layout.”

The stories were all emotionally difficult, but crucial to create the book Kehler was striving for.

“This book was bigger than me since the beginning and it took on a life of its own,” he said. “I put a call out for proposals, but knew many of these men personally and reached out to them. Others, I found through social media or word of mouth.

“When I reached out to these men they were committed to this project before I even finished my pitch.

There was absolutely no hesitation to put their name and face beside their story because they were done with hiding, and they wanted to use their stories to assist other men who remain in hiding. We all knew that we were creating something special, and I believe we did. From the idea to write this book to the actual book launch was only 11 months so it all came together with general ease.”

Overall the book was one that did not unfold easily, even with the co-operation of the men, because the stories were emotionally hard.

“Of the four books that

I have written, this was hands down the most challenging,” said Kehler. “I have experienced themes of mental illness, suicide, addiction, and sexual abuse in my own life so it brought up my past and caused those old emotions to rush back. This significantly impacted my own mental health. My wife, Tanya, is my rock and greatest support. There was a time during the writing process where she said, ‘As a motivational speaker you are always encouraging people to put their own needs before others and to take care of themselves. It’s time to take your own advice,’ so I did. I shelved the book for a few weeks until I felt strong enough to continue.”

So what does the author think is the best aspect of the book?

“In my eyes, these men are heroes because they had the courage to talk about their own struggles,” s a i d K e h l e r. “ M i c h a e l Landsberg did the foreword and he said it perfectly.

He said there is nothing contagious about mental illness, but there is something contagious when we share.

It gives others permission to do the same. That is what we have done. Men need to see other men be vulnerable. They need reassurance that their reputation will not be shot.”

But, is Kehler satisfied with the overall story he created?

“I have always struggled with value, and while the other books were extremely successful, I had a difficult time feeling proud of any previous books,” he related. “ T h i s w a s d i ff e r e n t .

I truly believe that we

created something that will change lives. I hope that this book gives other people permission to be vulnerable, put a voice to their pain, and reach out for help.”

As for an audience, Kehler hopes it’s men, in particular those men needing a little nudge to seek help.

“As men, we seem to struggle when it comes to putting a voice to our thoughts and emotions.

Information is power,” he offered. “As former NHL goalie Clint Malarchuk said in his testimonial, ‘this book will help women to understand and support us better.’

“The nice thing about a book is that it’s nonthreatening. It can be gifted to a man, and he can read it in his own time in his own way. Because the book contains 16 different stories and various themes, it is inevitable that something will resonate.

“I understood that women would likely be the ones to purchase this book more than men themselves. For that reason, we dedicated a chapter on how to support the men in your life. Two women share their personal stories on this theme.

“I also believe that we can get this book into every school in Canada along with the interviews of the men that we recorded.”

In the end, hopefully the book will help men move past the perception that they should not show emotion; that they must toughen up, and act like a man.

“It comes to mental health. The problem is that you can only stuff so much in before it is going to come

out,” said Kehler. “Children were never taught the tools.

If you don’t have the tools you are really limited, and there is only so much that you can do.

“The best way to move past the perception is for other men to be vulnerable and give themselves permission to feel.

“Today, boys are being taught to feel, to cry, and to reach out for help in times of need. Boys are beginning to understand that asking for help is not a weakness but rather a strength. They are learning that it’s okay to not be okay. What’s not okay is to fight your battles in silence. There is nothing manly about suffering in silence. While the pressure to be strong still exists for boys, silence has never equalled strength.

“The men in this book are motivated to help boys and men recognize that they don’t need to conform to the old stereotypes of masculinity. They are motivated to represent a new and healthy form of masculinity, and demonstrate that real men can, and should, ask for help.

“These men understand that the conversation around men’s mental health won’t get better unless we make it better.”

Many men still feel as though they need to stuff their emotions deep inside to be strong. They feel the pressure to just ‘suck it up’ and keep going. It’s this very mindset that keeps many men silent.

“These men understand that the conversation around men’s mental health won’t get better unless we make it better,” concluded Kehler.

Special pot stove returned to Sturgis Museum The Sturgis Station House Museum had received a special donation of a potbelly stove from K e n To y i n 2 0 1 8 . T h e

stove had belonged to his father Jack Toy who had operated The Northern Café in Sturgis from 1949 to the early 1970s.

The Sturgis Station House Museum had previously received a special donation of a potbelly stove from Ken Toy in 2018. The stove had belonged to his father Jack Toy who had operated The Northern Café in Sturgis from 1949 to the early 1970s. It was recently refurbished and restored back to its original state.

The stove had previously sat in a corner of the museum prior to being refurbished by Manny and Effie Silveira of The Prairie Cricket Antique Shoppe of Saltcoats. The stove, after being refurbished, was delivered back to the museum on June 18.

The following recounts the historical story of the stove and the store submitted by Ken Toy, son of Jack Toy. The Northern Café in Sturgis was rebuilt after a fire, about the year 1936, and subsequently rented out to Chinese proprietors, according to the Sturgis History book, Harvest of Memories. It is possible that this was when the potbelly stove was first brought in.

J a c k To y ( To y Yu e n Jack) had immigrated to Canada in 1919, at the age of 14. He returned to China several times, to visit his family and to dutifully marry, but his wife Louie TooHoy was unable to join him for many years because of the Canadian g o v e r n m e n t ’s C h i n e s e Exclusion Act. Jack, along with bachelors Jim Toy and Gue Toy took over the Northern Café restaurant

in 1949.

The upper story of the building provided living quarters for the men, and other rooms were rented out to boarders.

In February of 1954, Toy L o u i e To o H o y ( l o c a l l y known as Mrs. Jack Toy, or simply Mrs. Toy) and their son, Kenny, finally arrived in Sturgis from China, completing Jack’s family structure.

Kenny, not speaking a word of English at age 7, was immediately enrolled into the school system in the fall and began his education.

In about the year 1957, due to disagreements between the three partners, Jack Toy decided to sell his share back to Jim and Gue and followed his dream of a solo interest in a business in Kelwood,

Jack and his family move back to Sturgis and take over the Northern Café solely, when Jim and Gue decided to retire “back to the old country.” By this time, Kenny was old enough to do the chores and for the next few years, he was charged with hauling water from the town well, splitting wood for the kitchen stove, and bringing in the coal for the potbelly stove to heat the café during the long cold winter months.

It was approximately 1966 that Jack finally hooked up to the town water system and the luxury of indoor toilets.

Until then, customers had to make a trip to the outhouse at the back.

Kenny was then relieved of hauling water with a wagon in the summer and with a sled in the winter using 5 and 10-gallon milk cans. Jack sold groceries, fresh meat, tobacco, had an impressive array of penny candy, and was known for his ability to cook a tender steak and bake amazing pies.

Menu offerings were strictly Canadian-style food. Chinese food was reserved for the family’s private dinners and shared with visiting Chinese families, most of them on special occasions when other rural restaurant owners were able to get together.

Many a local resident came to the Northern Café on a cold and frigid day to visit with Jack and fellow locals. On cold days they could be seen trying to solve the world’s problems while huddled around this stove with one foot on the warming ring and hands competing for the limited space on the warming umbrella.

He departed with a school mate in the summer of that year and hitchhiked to Winnipeg where he eventually completed his high school and continued on to university receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba. Ken went on to join the RCMP later in

life and retired at the age of 67.

In 1971, Jack suffered a stroke upstairs above the restaurant. The Coop delivery agent happened to arrive and he managed to carry Jack downstairs, get him into his delivery truck, and get him to Preeceville Union Hospital.

Jack passed away approximately one week later. His family has never forgotten the strength and compassion of the Co-op delivery man.

Ken returned to Sturgis immediately.

His father was buried in the Sturgis Cemetery. The business was dissolved and an auction held. Ken

took his mother back with him to Winnipeg where she spent the next 17 happy years with Ken and his wife, Leslie.

They returned annually, with their growing family, for a traditional observance of respect at Jack’s gravesite. When TooHoy passed away in 1988, she was buried at Brookside

Cemetery in Winnipeg, and it was at that time that Jack’s remains were moved, to rest beside his wife’s at Brookside. Ken and Leslie have returned to Sturgis many times. The couple has three children.

U n f o r t u n a t e l y, s e v eral valuable artifacts that Ken had kept aside for the family, including a

large ornate cash register, had mysteriously ‘disappeared’ when he had returned to bring them back to Winnipeg. Jack’s descendants still use several of the old restaurant utensils, which have a solidness of utility about them, and the patina of many stories, concluded the submitted information.

“We have faced some time delays with workers following social distance guidelines due to the COVID-19 pandemic but for the most part things have gone according to the plan that was established,” said Chambers.

“The hours for the C-Store will be determined as we get closer to opening and customers can expect extended hours. The C-Store has the ability to lock off the other portions of the store and just have the convenience part open to the public.”

In order to prepare for the move from the old store to the new location the employees at the old

store provided an entire inventory of the store with inventory being brought over to the new location as

soon as it is finished.

“The major store inventory was part of the yearly

inventory but this year the staff did the inventory due to the COVID

-19 pandemic as we could not bring in staff to do the inventory,” said Chambers.

Seven invasive species Saskatchewan can help contain this summer as the weather gets warmer Submitted Yorkton This Week Many Canadians are itching to get outdoors after weeks of COVID-19 self-isolation and a lengthy winter. Some are able to in provinces where restrictions have been lifted, while others remain close to home.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is marking Invasive Species Awareness Week by urging people to help minimize the spread of invasive species, whether they are resuming recreational activities or spending time in their yard, according to a release.

NCC has issued a list of invasive plants and species that Saskatchewan residents should be aware of and watch for. They include: • Canada thistle, • common tansy, • European buckthorn, • European common

reed, • knapweeds, • leafy spurge and; • purple loosestrife.

Dan Kraus, NCC senior conservation biologist, suggests that with more of us spending time at home and taking short walks in local parks, now is an ideal time to identify and report invasive plants in our communities.

Spring is also an ideal time to audit the backyard for invasive species. While many non-native plants are not an issue for biodiversity, there are several that are known to spread from backyards into nearby natural areas. Property owners can play an important role in reducing the spread of these species by removing them from their gardens.

Also, growing native plants in yards can help contribute to a healthy ecosystem.

People can help by reporting sightings which contributes to early

Saskatchewan residents who are anxious to take advantage of the warmer weather and spend more time outside are encouraged to watch out for invasive plant species which can cause significant headaches and increased costs. Saskatchewan residents of all ages and levels of experience can join in the effort to stem the spread of invasive species by downloading the iNaturalist phone app (iNaturalist.ca) and uploading photos to help scientists and government agencies identify the species and monitor their spread.

Invasive species can

include insects like the Rose Stem Girdler that attacks native prairie roses and raspberries and has few natural predators to control them. Once they get into ecosystems, they’re often able to rapidly spread and can negatively impact native plants and animals.

NCC works hard to detect and control invasive species on all properties

across Saskatchewan, and has partnered with Agriculture Canada to implement biological control of some invasive species in the form of natural predators that target specific species like leafy spurge at Big Valley and yellow toadflax at our Messier property.

There are various ways residents can assist in mitigating the spread of invasive plants. Once recognized, the problem can be tackled by manually removing the plants before they become established.

Invasive species spotted in greenhouses, or elsewhere, can be reported to the Saskatchewan Invasive Species Council.

“Globally, invasive species have been identified as the number two threat to nature, with habitat loss being the primary issue,” said Kraus. “Invasive species not only threaten our Canadian plants and animals, but also impact our

economy and well-being.

Invasive species cost us billions of dollars each year and are altering the character and functions of many Canadian ecosystems.

“Invasive species are an everyday concern for Saskatchewan land managers and the public alike.

Controlling the spread of invasive plants like absinthe or downy brome and animals like Russian carp or feral pigs have real world implications,” says Matthew Braun, manager of conservation science and planning with the NCC. “It can take thousands of dollars to deal with a single weed species in your pasture and one family of wild pigs can create an awful mess in the wild. These species reduce available forage for grazers, decrease biodiversity by outcompeting native species, and mar the beauty of our pristine native ecosystems.”

Sturgis Museum keeps busy despite COVID-19 The Sturgis Station House Museum faced an uncertain season when the decision was made to cancel all museum functions due to COVID-19.

Despite the setback Stacy Wiebe, the museum curator,

along with Tyrell Olson, summer student, and board members have been keeping busy cleaning and better cataloguing artifacts.

“We have finally managed to catch up to the backlog of better cataloguing and

numbering each artifact,” said Wiebe. “We may be closed to the public but we are still accepting artifact donations. The 100th year celebration of the Brookview School that was to take place this season will be postponed

until next year,” she said.

The museum strives to: collect artifacts and archival materials of historical or cultural significance which hold documentary evidence, past and present, of the people and their activities in the

development and ongoing story of the community of Sturgis and surrounding area.

Its goal is to describe, interpret and communicate through exhibition, display, programming or research

opportunities, those items for the education, study and enjoyment of all members of the general public; and to properly care for and preserve all items held in its trust, for present and future generations.

Yorkton & District Community Foundation takes part in new Emergency Community Support Fund Yo r k t o n & D i s t r i c t Community Foundation has announced it will provide $75,000 to support local charities responding to COVID-19 as part of a new partnership with Community Foundations of Canada, United Way Centraide Canada and the Canadian Red Cross, funded through the Government o f C a n a d a ’s $ 3 5 0 M Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF). This vast national effort aims to support vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by COVID-19.

“The efforts of our

communities to reduce the spread of COVID-19 is impressive and nothing less than heroic. It has taken a toll on our community members, in particular our most vulnerable populations,” says Sharon Tropin, Yorkton & District Community Foundation president. “Local charities and non-profit organizations have worked tirelessly and their resources are stretched. We know that the ramifications from the pandemic will be felt for some time to come. This additional funding from the Government of Canada will provide a much-needed boost to their efforts. We’re looking forward to flowing the ECSF grant dollars quickly to where they are

needed.”

The Emergency Community Support Fund was initially announced on April 21 by the Prime Minister of Canada, continued the release. It is part of a broad series of emergency response measures by the Government of Canada.

“Canadian charities and not for profits are always there to help you, in your time of need. But the COVID-19 pandemic is bringing real chall e n g e s t o t h e s e i m p o rtant organizations. With today’s announcement, the Government of Canada will be there for them so they can continue to be there for Canadians,” (Ahmed Hussen, minister of families, children and social

development).

Yo r k t o n & D i s t r i c t Community Foundation will immediately begin accepting applications for funding from qualified donees. Grants can be used for a variety of purposes, including to cover staffing or resource needs, purchase assistance and more. Funding from the ECSF will be issued on an ongoing basis through July. Charities and community organizations are invited to visit the foundation website www.ydcf.c for eligibility and application details.

In addition, people wishing to support local charity work related to COVID-19 can donate to the Yorkton & District Emergency Fund campaign. Information

about the campaign is also found on the Yorkton & District Community Foundation website.

Rural residents dissatisfied with Internet service The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) is raising concerns about the continued lack of adequate telecommunications services in rural Saskatchewan.

Without service, APAS warns rural residents will be

left behind, according to a release.

From May to December 2019, APAS conducted a survey on rural Internet and cell service and found a high level of disruption, dissatisfaction, and disinvestment in rural communities.

Reliable Internet and cellular coverage are critical for rural communities to support their businesses, students, health services, and overall quality of life.

“When you’re out harvesting you have no time to waste, so when slow service

keeps you from getting your parts, bidding on equipment, or signing your contracts it can mean the difference between a profit and loss that day,” said Todd Lewis, APAS President and farmer in the release. “It’s not only the difference between making and

losing money. If I get stuck out in the field and I can’t call for help it can be a potentially dangerous situation.”

Health Foundation annual report highlights new regional hospital to be built in Yorkton The annual general meeting of The Health Foundation of East Central Saskatchewan was held on May 28 in the offices of the Foundation in Yorkton and via Zoom.

In her report to the members, Diane Rusnak, board chair, said 2019 was a very positive and successful year in enhancing the healthcare available to the residents of east central Saskatchewan.

“The highlight of the year came from a lot of work that happened in 2019, and culminated in the government announcement in March that a new regional hospital would be built in Yorkton and the government was providing $500,000 to begin the planning,”

said Rusnak. “This is a significant announcement for Yorkton and the result of a lot of work on the part of many people. I do want to recognize the City of Yorkton for the work they did with us last year, and the work of our MLA Greg O t t e n b r e i t a n d Wa r r e n Kaeding, the minister of remote and rural healthcare.”

Rusnak said there are many challenges in the year ahead in preparation for the new hospital, as well as looking after the day-to-day work.

“The Health Foundation did a great job that way in 2019, raising gross revenue of over $2 million.

Those funds were raised from 5,278 donations,” she

reported. “We raise money for equipment that will provide new or enhanced services that people can see will make a difference in the healthcare available locally.

“People see the results of their donation right away.

When people see the new stroke clinic or the new CT scanner in use shortly after they make a donation. they know their donation went where it was supposed to, and that new equipment is at work making a difference.”

The Health Foundation purchased $257,373 worth of medical equipment in 2019, and in addition raised $500,000 to purchase and install a new digital mammography machine.

Some of the other key

pieces of equipment purchased were: • $64,380 – for a new hematology analyzer for the lab • $16,234 – a Lucas chest compression system • $16,018 – a Bladder scanner • $15,396 - equipment for the Ear Nose and Throat specialist so he can do procedures in Yorkton • $76,349 – was spent in the healthcare facilities outside of Yorkton.

In addition, $42,079 was spent on the Education and Scholarship program, assisting 27 nurses and therapists to take courses. Highlights of that program are: • assisted two nurses to take the courses required to

become ICU nurses • funded two 3-day workshops, where we brought in an educator to assist staff to develop new clinical skills for work with patients. The workshops had a total of 34 participants and the topics were: a Challenging Geriatric Behaviours Workshop, and a Neuro-Developmental Treatment Workshop.

Rusnak said volunteer support continues to be key in the success of the Foundation.

or working on one of the Foundations’ many events,” she said. “It is important to remember, The Health Foundation is not actually part of the Saskatchewan Health Authority. We are an independent community organization, managed by a volunteer board, and receive no government funding. We have only two full-time staff. We could not do the work we do without volunteers.

MS Society of Canada asks Canadians to go the distance, make a difference MS Bike goes virtual this year as the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society of Canada brings communities together all summer to support Canadians affected by multiple sclerosis, according to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.

When and how far you choose to ride is up to you, but on July 25 and 26 the MS Society will host a weekend-long online event to rally Virtual MS Bike participants together, share their stories, connect with each other and be inspired as one MS Bike community, no matter what your goal is.

A virtual ride means that throughout the summer you

can choose when you ride and the distance you cycle, but still come together with the MS community for the first-ever Virtual MS Bike, on July 25 and 26, where we’ll connect online across the country to rally with the tens of thousands of Canadians affected by MS. “MS Bike has been running for more than 30 years. It’s a staple in our awareness building and fundraising efforts at the MS Society of Canada and although we are facing challenging times globally, it’s important that we continue to find ways to connect as a community and support one another,” says Pamela Valentine, president

and CEO, MS Society of Canada. “The current health crisis has impacted all Canadians, and for those affected by MS it’s another uncertain and unpredictable concern on top of an already challenging disease.

in me that is still burning brightly. Year after year, I am able to connect with others living with this disease who may be struggling to feel less alone, just like I was all those years ago.

Although we can’t come together and ride in-person this year, the awareness and funds raised through MS Bike are needed now more than ever.”

This year’s Virtual MS Bike will have weekly challenges such as the fastest kilometre and longest ride, event weekend distance goals of 40 to 200km and even includes a virtual ride across Canada (7,117km).

By Kaare Askildt They did it again! The medical support staff at the cancer centre called yesterday and cancelled the radiation and the insert of a skin port rather than a PICC line for further chemo treatments.

We suspect the coronavirus might be the cause, but no reasons were given, other than Marion’s case will be discussed at the next round table discussion of all the oncologists.

We are guessing and hoping that these two decisions were made as a result of her latest CT scan.

Perhaps the tumour had shrunk considerably, and they would discuss other options like surgery to remove the remnants of the tumour, but who knows.

The sparse information given only creates uncertainty and speculations. I wish they would be more forthcoming with clinical information or provide a progress report.

Because of the coronavirus, we are self isolating (hibernating) to try to avoid unwanted germs. Marion will call in her shopping list to the grocery store, and they will call back to tell her the amount to make the c h e q u e f o r. O n e o f t h e clerks will deliver the groceries about two hours later and no delivery charge! We just love living in a small town.

The usual seniors’ service at the local hospital has been suspended indefinitely, which means that Marion had to perform a pedicure on me, because the nails were snagging the socks. What a rodeo! We d o n ’t h a v e a h o r s e anymore and Lady doesn’t want Marion near her nails again. She chews off her own nails when they get too long. That should have been a clue for me.

I’m very ticklish, so grabbing my toes doesn’t come without an involuntary reaction. The first foot went fine, but I got a bit concerned when she was working at the end of the second foot, and Marion mumbled to herself “hmm, where did all that blood come from?”

She then declared the job finished, went to the bathroom and brought back two bandages, one for the little toe also known as the furniture toe, and the other for the little toe’s neighbour. I concluded that she must be a clip-toe-maniac.

My feet were slightly tender, and I had a bit of difficulty walking afterwards. It seems to me that she has cut the nails back so that the pedicure would last to Christmas.

It was Ole’s birthday and Lena had arranged for Ole to get both a manicure and a pedicure at the local spa. The appointment was for 8 a.m. of his birthday.

His good buddy Sven had decided that he would wake Ole up that morni n g b y p l a y i n g G r i e g ’s Morning Mood from the Peer Gynt Suite on his fiddle. Ole really enjoyed listening to Grieg’s Per Gynt Suite and Morning Mood was very special to both him and his wife Lena, especially if Lena played the CD in the morning. Lena let Sven in at 6 a.m. Sven tippy-toed over to the bedroom, carefully opened the door, took out his fiddle and began to play Morning Mood. Ole turned over in the bed and said “Hey Lena! Move over you’re crushing the cat!”

Hospitals are full of unwanted germs, so it is a good thing that Marion spends very little time in that environment. There are many strange stories about hospitals and what goes on in there. Ole and Sven were enjoying a couple of shots of Akevitt at the Bottoms Up Bar and Grille, while engaged in some small talk.

“Truls was a lawyer,” said Ole. “When he was

on his last legs in the Lutheran hospital, I went to show my respect and visit with him before he passed.” “ I r e m e m b e r Tr u l s , ” said Sven. “He passed away a couple of weeks ago. He had a reputation as a defense attorney that would find cracks in the Crown witnesses’ testimonies and pick them apart, winning about 80 per cent of his cases.”

“Well, he didn’t mince his words, that’s for sure” said Ole. “When I walked into his room at the hospital though, I found him sitting up in bed reading the Bible.”

“Really?” asked Sven.

“Was he turning religious and looking for spiritual comfort and guidance?”

“Nah. He told me that he was just looking for loopholes,” said Ole. They ordered the chef’s special and another couple of shots of Akevitt.

“You know Olga, the nice-looking nurse that lives next door to me?” asked Sven.

“Yep!” replied Ole. “I know her, she’s a nice gal.

What about her?”

“She told me about our friend Knut,” said Sven.

“Apparently he had some minor surgery done, and was in the recovery room.

Olga went into the room to check on him and asked him how he was.”

“OK,” said Ole, “so, how was he?”

“According to Olga,” said Sven, “he told her that he was fine, they had only given him a local anesthetic, so he was awake during the procedure. He told Olga that he didn’t like the four-letter word that the surgeon had uttered during the operation.

When Olga inquired as to what four-letter word, Knut told her the surgeon said ‘Oops!’”

Stein had major surgery done to both of his hands, and when the surgeon came to check on him, Stein excitedly and dramatically held up both his heavily bandaged hands. “ Te l l m e d o c , ” s a i d Stein, “when these bandages come off, will I be able to play the piano?”

“Yes, of course,” answered the surgeon. “ Wo w ! ” e x c l a i m e d Stein, “I never could play it before.”

Preeceville kindergarten class celebrates a milestone Twelve kindergarten students from the Preeceville School were acknowledged in a unique celebration due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Although we did not f i n i s h o ff t h e y e a r a s I wished we did have some pretty fantastic times t o g e t h e r, ” s a i d K a y l y n Barsby, Preeceville School kindergarten teacher.

The class could not get together to celebrate the milestone in the students’ lives but Barsby made the acknowledgement as special as she could. She made a slide presentation with all the events and activities the class had participated in and she also made up gift bags for each student. Each family received the presentation as a keepsake for their child.

Members of the P r e e c e v i l l e k i n d e rg a rten class were: Zachary Durand, Samer Budd, Isaac Johnson, Lane Townsend, Hayley Hartl,

Brooklyn Modeland, Chelsa Heskin, Monica Anguluan, Max McLaughlin, Lane Townsend, Sage Ward and Christina Paligan.

The class had fun making memories with participating in the Terry Fox run, created dens for animals and learned what animals hibernate. Class members celebrated Halloween, Christmas, birthdays, and interacted with family members through reading and fun activities and made home made ice cream.

“In kindergarten the class learned many new things like rhyming, letter and number recognition and formation, health topics that included how to be healthy, what to eat to be healthy, making healthy choices and making healthy friendships,” said Barsby.

She concluded with a Dr. Seuss quote, “You’re off to great places. Today is your day. Your mountain is waiting so get on your way.”

This Blended Learning model provides the programming flexibility needed to manage the risks of the COVID-19 p a n d e m i c w h i l e e n s u ring the continued health and safety of students, faculty, and staff.
