How the time has flown by for the class of ‘68 The graduating class of 1968 from Sturgis Composite High School got reacquainted when the class celebrated its 50 th school reunion on August 17.

This was the second time that the class held a reunion.

It was just 20 years ago that this same class held a 30year reunion.

There were 92 students who had attended Grade 12 Sturgis Composite High School in 1968. “We had 76 classmates out of the 92 that took part in the graduation ceremony on May 10, 1968,” said Bill Lesko, classmate.

Graduates journeyed from as far as Vancouver and Abbotsford in B.C., Whitehorse in the Yukon, Vegreville in Alberta and Regina and Saskatoon.

The afternoon started with registration and a meet and greet in the school gymnasium, followed by a tour of the school. Countless changes and developments had taken place at the school over the past 50 years.

then proceeded to the Sturgis Read Club for a buffet catered by the Black Bear Inn. In total there were 55 graduates, spouses and guests. “The evening continued with remembering the 12 students who are no longer with us. There was a presentation of memorabilia to each graduate and a quiz of trivia questions from the 67/68 school year. John Davis, a long since retired teacher who once taught the class of 1968, humoured us with a speech on growing old and being a senior citizen,� said Lesko.

The evening ended with more socializing and more eating. “Concluding the evening was bittersweet; if only time could stand still a moment longer, from the expressions of all in attendance. Though time was short, all had a wonderful time at the 50th reunion of the class of ‘68 and all will remember this day for a long, long time,� he said..

Twelve families from the local and surrounding area took advantage of the chance to spend some quality time together as a family and experience camping through the family camp supported by Family Support and the RCMP Depot Stand Easy Division at Nelson Lake Bible Camp.

The Family Support Program is an in-home service, equipping parents with tools and skills for developing a stronger family unit. “This is the first time that the camp has been hosted and it has been a great success,� said Sharon Karcha, Family Support volunteer.

The camp focused on giving families the opportunity to experience camping and family wellness.

Cpl. George Riffel from Community Service RCMP Division in Yorkton was in attendance the entire week of camp. Riffel provided information on many topics that covered drinking and driving, bullying, impaired driving and other programs available for families.

Urbanoski, Olson, Bashforth reappointed to Sturgis Housing Authority Hazel Urbanoski, Donna Olson and Kathleen Bashforth have been reappointed to the Sturgis Housing Authority board of directors.

Other members of the board of directors are Blaine Medlang and Elaine Christopherson. Christopherson is chairperson, said a release from Social Services.

The Sturgis Housing Authority is a

community-based organization that provides daily management of 27 housing units constructed and operated under the terms of a federal provincial municipal cost sharing agreement, according to the release.

Paul Merriman, Social Services Minister, paid tribute to the volunteers who manage the social housing projects in their community.

“This local hands-on approach ensures that the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation responds effectively to the needs of each community,� he said.

Saskatchewan has a network of 260 housing authorities and more than 1,400 volunteer members who assist with management of housing units throughout the province for seniors, low income families and persons with disabilities, said the

release.

Persons interested in volunteering to serve on the board of directors for the Sturgis Housing Authority are encouraged to contact Allan Holmberg, the mayor of Sturgis. A local nominating committee recommends board members.

Applications for accommodation are available from the manager of the Sturgis Housing Authority.

Preeceville youth wins second place honours in national literary contest Kalyssa Tuz, daughter of Cherilyn and Michael of Preeceville recently became a published author for her poem Outside the Box and won second place honours in the poetry category, Mensa Canada 2018 literary contest.

After becoming a member of Mensa Canada, Kalyssa decided to submit a poem for its annual Literary Contest, said Cherilyn Tuz, mom.

“She then attended the Mensa Canada Annual Gathering in Calgary at the beginning of August where she found out she had won second place,” said Tuz. “She has always enjoyed writing and this is definitely a prestigious award to receive given that the contest included Mensans of all ages across the country. She will be back at it again next year, I’m sure.”

Kalyssa is 17 and entering Grade 12 with the Sun West Distance Learning Centre out of Kenaston, stated Tuz. Kalyssa is the granddaughter of Brian and Laural Okrainetz and great-granddaughter of Gladys Nazar, all of Preeceville.

“She’s always loved writing. We were planning to attend the conference anyhow, so she submitted a poem. It took her 15 minutes to write it. There were guidelines that she had to follow. She

finished second but first in English, as the winning poem was written in French,” stated Tuz’ mother.

By Kalyssa Tuz. Mensa, Canada is known as the International High-IQ Society and is an organization for people who score in the top two per cent in intelligence tests, said the website.

Mensa was founded in England in 1946 by Roland Berrill, a barrister, and by Dr. Lance Ware, a scientist and lawyer. They had the idea of forming a society for bright people, the only qualification for membership being a high IQ. The original aims were to create a society that is non-political and free from all racial or religious distinctions.

The word “Mensa” is Latin for “table”, the idea being society is a round table where all members regardless of age, sex, race, beliefs or income are considered equals.

The Mensa Canada Society welcomes people from every walk of life whose IQ is in the top two per cent of the population. The objective of membership is to enjoy each other’s company and to participate in a wide range of social and cultural activities.

LOOKING BACK...

A Decade Ago

A group of 20 family and friends gathered for a photograph before departing on a special journey, the first Trent Paul memorial bike ride, from Sturgis, Saskatchewan to Sturgis, South Dakota. ***** The Preeceville Trap Club hosted its annual shoot with 27 entries in a variety of events at the Preeceville Sports grounds. In the first singles category, Julien Englot of Endeavour won the Class C event, shooting 99 out of 100. ***** Benny Wen, Linsey Yanke and Sarah Sushelnicki, students from the local area, had a fun four days putting together birdhouses and adding their own personal touch to each one with paint at the Preeceville Sports grounds. ***** The 2008 harvest was just getting underway with crops being desiccated and some winter wheat being combined, said Phil Parker, an agronomist with Hudye Soil Services. ***** Preeceville Hospital candy stripers Pam Myhr, Judy Mai, Janine Buchinski and Hilary Ivanochko were recognized for their accomplishments and volunteerism during a season windup program. ***** Lorna Brodziak, Preeceville museum secretary treasurer, and Lorne Plaxin, president, displayed the $2,500 donation cheque from the Painted Hand Community Development Corporation.

Sask. Party debt alarming When it comes to which parties are running up big debt, the numbers speak for themselves.

Let us be clear that no party holds the monopoly on big spending.

While the Roy Romanow/ Lorne Calvert New Democrats were rather tightfisted, their government also made bone-headed investments in U.S. high-tech and growing potatoes that cost Saskatchewan taxpayers millions of dollars.

That said, its combination of cuts and high taxes did bring public debt back down to around $10 billion by the time the Calvert government was voted out in 2007.

Similarly, the Tommy Douglas government of the 1940s ‘50s and ‘60s along with the Allan Blakeney government of the 1970s did balance the books, at least when it came to the general

revenue fund.

H o w e v e r, t h e i r g o v ernments’ penchant to invest heavily in Crown Corporations like the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan ultimately meant higher taxes and not saving money we might otherwise have had in a Heritage Fund.

But accumulated public debt was actually rather minimal under Douglas and Blakeney, a stark contrast to what’s happened under the right-wing Progressive Conservatives of 1980s and the Saskatchewan Party of today.

In the case of the Grant Devine PCs, it was an added billion dollars a year in public debt for the entire decade of its existence.

Not only did the PCs fail to present a single balanced budget but it also added massive Crown debt

through spending in areas like the old Saskatchewan Economic Development Corporation (Sedco) and megaprojects in the major utility Crown corporations.

In fairness, this big spending did have its positive elements.

Massive agricultural spending kept farmers on the land in drought years and we all benefitted from huge tax breaks like the (temporary) elimination of the gas tax.

Similarly, public investment in natural gas lines and the Rafferty-Alameda/Shand projects kept us warm and

kept the lights on.

But in the end we have all wound up paying for public debt that increased from about $3 billion when the PCs entered office to $13 billion when they left.

Of course, debt went down to as low as $7.9 billion in the early days of the Sask. Party Premier Brad Wall during the high oil and potash prices a decade ago.

H o w e v e r, s i n c e t h e n unbalanced budget and borrowing for big capital spending has us headed towards an expected $22.8 billion by 2021.

Yes, Wall and current Premier Scott Moe have also delivered new hospitals, schools and highways. But the Sask. Party is also now on track for an added billion dollars a year in debt.

Recently, Sask. Party cabinet authorized in an order-in-council the power to borrow up to $6 billion if “the general revenue fund is or will be insufficient to meet the charges and expenses.”

This follows $1.7 billion in borrowing from the open markets in the last Ken Krawetz budget and first Kevin Doherty, borrowing around the time of the 2016 election.

The Sask. Party government insisted this was no big deal and still takes that approach.

In a recent tweet, Wall noted that Saskatchewan continues to have the

second-lowest debt-to-GDP ratio, did receive an AAA rating and had reduced operating debt.

The problem is, comparing yourself with the bad record of other provinces is a weak argument. And lower operating debt and improved borrowing rating will not last as deficit budgets and operating debt mount.

That this government loves capital spending, $1.6 billion on capital projects in 2018-19 alone that will contribute $2.3 billion to more debt this year, is obviously one problem.

But more borrowing now adding to rising public debt is a far bigger problem the government must start to take seriously.

Notwithstanding their rhetoric, conservative-minded governments just haven’t been all that conservative when it comes to debt.

Bypass scandal far from over On July 25, the RCMP announced that they would not be criminally charging any of the political and private enterprises individuals who seem to have been caught red-handed in a series of misappropriations of Saskatchewan taxpayer funds, after completing their investigation into the Regina Bypass land transactions which had transpired next to the Global Transportation Hub. Well, we have now sunk to an all time low in the annals of Saskatchewan’s legal processes

and proceedings. The decisive decision by the RCMP is destined to be acknowledged in Canadian political history textbooks as a colossal miscarriage of justice.

The RCMP stated, “approximately 7,500 person hours were devoted to the file,” that “thousands of documents were examined,” and that all of the examined documents “were freely provided to investigators by the holding parties.”

Then the spokesperson read this jaw dropping statement: “Police

never got to the point where investigators reached the ‘threshold’ to execute any search warrants.”

We have to ask: What or who were the sources of the evidence they sorted through during their many months of devoted investigation? We truly believe the volumes of evidence we have complied and chronologically ordered over the last five years would have provided the RCMP with invaluable additional facts and figures.

Should we naively believe that those individuals who were under

legal scrutiny would have freely handed over the documents which could have resulted in their criminal convictions?

The RCMP may have concluded their involvement in these controversial matters, but their no-search-warrants issued disclosure emphatically underscores the need to go beyond their efforts. A comprehensive public inquiry as well as an intensive forensic audit are critically needed, because too many concerned citizens feel there are so many buried truths

that absolutely must be brought to light.

As a famous philosopher once wrote, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” We direct this to all the political and private sector players who may have irreparably damaged the biggest infrastructure project in Saskatchewan’s history: firstly, are any of you good men?

And secondly, can any of you ever be trusted to do the right thing?

Woke up to another merger deal in the patch I woke up this morning, and unlike Tony Soprano, I did not get myself a gun. But I did get an email which indicated there was yet another merger in the works.

Merger, acquisition, buyout, hostile takeover; same difference. But there’s been a lot more of them in the oilpatch recently.

In this case, Ensign Energy Services Inc. was making an offer directly to the shareholders of Trinidad Drilling Ltd. These are two of the biggest players in the Canadian drilling industry, and they play on a global scale. Trinidad had, as of May, 68 rigs in Canada, 66 in the U.S. and overseas, and another five in a joint venture with Halliburton. The corporation works in Mexico and the Middle East.

But its share price, compared to its heyday, is peanuts. The offer from Ensign, a 20 per cent premium over the recent Trinidad price,

is roughly one-seventh, per share, what Trinidad was trading for in early 2014, before the oil downturn hit.

I take particular interest in this deal because it involved some local content I’ve spent the last 10 years writing about.

When I first came to Estevan, I spent a lot of time writing about Eagle Drilling, which was building new rigs as quick as it could, including eight yellow rigs before selling to CanElson Drilling, whose corporate colour is tan. At the same time, Totem Drilling sold its six orange rigs to CanElson. Then a few years ago Trinidad Drilling, green, bought CanElson. Now Ensign Drilling, dark blue, is seeking to buy Trinidad. By the time this is all said and done, Ensign may end up with a Skittles-fleet. Good thing I know a guy who sells industrial paint. I hope he makes a killing.

More seriously, though, it has been the evolution of small drillers where the management knew all the staff, to companies where the employees would simply be numbers. And that’s kinda sad.

What’s also sad is that Trinidad’s board, for all intents and purposes, threw in the towel a few months ago by announcing one of those corporate strategic reviews, where it basically told the market, “we give up, come buy us.”

There were no takers, at least no takers that were worth announcing, from Trinidad’s board’s

perspective. So the board members said they’d keep plugging along.

Ensign then came in and made an offer, which Trinidad’s board didn’t seem too keen on, so Ensign put out its press release on August 13 appealing directly to Trinidad’s shareholders.

In other words, it became something of a hostile takeover of a company that had just recently said “come buy me.”

Ironically, if Ensign is successful, it will gain another 13 rigs based in southeast Saskatchewan. A little over two years ago, the company shut down 13 of its own,

admittedly older rigs in Oxbow and Carnduff. And for these new rigs, they will be paying an average price of $6.8 million per rig.

That price is across the entire Trinidad fleet, which includes a lot of much bigger, more advanced and more capable rigs, many of which are AC-powered. So maybe it’s not fair to say they would be paying $6.8 million each per telescopic double (teledouble) rig in Saskatchewan. Maybe they’re paying more like $11 million a crack elsewhere, and a lot less here.

The reason this is significant is that much of the southeast Saskatchewan teledouble drilling rig fleet has been gobbled up by Matrrix Energy in the past year. It has scooped up either the company or the assets of Vortex Drilling, Stampede Drilling, D2 Drilling and Red Dog Drilling, and the price per rig was only in the

$1.4 million to $3 million range, for rigs that were $8 million and up to build. Does the Ensign offer for Trinidad improve the value of rigs in Saskatchewan today? Maybe it does. Maybe it doesn’t.

Time will tell.

These mergers are not a sign of health in the oilpatch, or of recovery. They are a sign that many companies simply can’t hold on any longer. We are a very long way from a healthy industry.

Even US$65/bbl. oil has not been enough to revive them.

A rising tide may float all boats, but either the tide has not risen enough yet, or the boats had too many holes in them.

Hopefully the companies that are doing the purchasing will be strong enough to grow, now, with these additional assets.

Otherwise, I can expect more early morning emails announcing mergers in the future.

Market roadblocks created by government impact prairie farmers In this space it has often been suggested one of the biggest challenges for farmers in terms of making a profit is maneuvering through the varied roadblocks created in the marketplace by government.

Of late the disruptions have generally been the result of the loose cannon American President Donald Trump, but other countries are getting involved in setting up barriers largely based on creating trade barriers rather than because of good science or food safety reasons.

For example, a Brazilian judge recently suspended the use of products containing glyphosate, a herbicide widely employed for soybeans and other crops in the country, as well as in

countries such as Canada where most canola is resistant to the herbicide.

The federal judge ruled new products containing the chemical could not be registered in the country and existing registrations would be suspended within the next 30 days until the government re-evaluates their toxicity.

Glyphosate has been studied extensively since its discovery in 1970, and while there is a general distrust of science growing in the world, it is not likely the Brazilian government is going to discover anything new. The government can still make a ruling that might ban the herbicide, but it would not be one made based on the best science of the day, but rather on

suspect interpretation of the science, if not outright fear of it.

The ruling particularly affects Monsanto, which markets a glyphosateresistant, genetically modified type of soybean that is planted on a large scale in Brazil, corresponding in general terms to much of the canola grown in Canada.

With canola so reliant on glyphosate usage, the final Brazilian decision, after what will no doubt be

protracted court challenges, could have a ripple effect on canola here in Canada.

And then there is the spat happening between Canada and Saudi Arabia, stemming from Canada refusing to back down in its defence of human rights.

The record of human rights in Saudi Arabia is a rather dismal one, a record which would be publicly deplored far more if the country wasn’t sitting on an ocean of oil the rest of the

world needs. That reality has most world leaders turning a blind eye to any issue surrounding the Saudis as a way to ensure oil exports flow.

“Saudi Arabia has a criminal justice system based on a hard-line and literal form of Shariah law reflecting a particular statesanctioned interpretation of Islam,” notes Wikipedia.

“It is usually carried out publicly by beheading with a sword. A recent report by the European Saudi Organization for Human Rights (ESOHR) shows that the number of beheadings in the kingdom during the first quarter of 2018 rose by over 70 percent compared to the same period last year.”

But what are a few beheadings compared to oil

flowing?

Saudi Arabia has frozen new trade and investment and expelled the Canadian ambassador among its retaliatory measures after Ottawa’s call to free arrested Saudi civil society activists.

And the trade cuts are hitting agriculture.

S a u d i A r a b i a ’s m a i n state wheat buying agency has informed grains exporters it will no longer buy Canadian wheat and barley, and it appears forage sales for livestock feed may be impacted too.

Again, the free flow of goods based on supply, demand, and price, cornerstones of organized trade, are abandoned for political reasons which impact farmers here.

Archers enjoy 3-D Archery Shoot at new location Avid archers were encouraged to take aim at numerous 3-D Archery Shoot targets at its new location at the Sturgis Sportsgrounds Grounds on August 18 and 19. “There were 94 archers registered between Saturday and Sunday. Everyone loved the new location and said wonderful things about the new trails,� said Kim Ryczak, secretary for the Sturgis Archery Club.

Archers had the opportunity to walk two courses, each approximately two kilometres long and with twenty 3-D targets, each with its own challenges. Targets were placed in realistic settings. The types of targets included: bear, turkey, wild boars, panther, cougars, elk, deer, moose, antelope, buffalo, dinosaurs and an alligator.

The Sturgis Archery Club hosted a pancake breakfast on each day.

Lintlaw Services provided two side-by-side vehicles for the shuttle service.

Preeceville Archery was in attendance both days offerings assistance to shooters regarding bows an arrows.

Medals were handed out for first to third place in male, female and junior categories.

In the bow hunter male category, Steven Geistlinger

won gold, Ian Thomas won silver and Kelly Masley won bronze. Belinda Bocking won gold in the female category; there were no silver and bronze medals presented.

Skylar Yurkiw won gold in the junior female compound division. There were no silver and bronze medals presented.

In the cadet compound male division, Carter Masley won gold and Jakub Turchinetz won silver. There was no bronze medal.

In the hunter male division, Dean Bocking won gold, Chris Halkyard won silver and Corey Nelson took bronze. In the female category, Leann Yurkiw won gold. There were no winners for silver and bronze medals.

In the pre-cub compound male category, Cole Masley

won gold, Parker Ryczak took silver and Hunter Nelson captured bronze. In the female category, Cierra Bocking won gold and Quirin Nelson took silver.

There was no bronze medal.

In the peewee male category, Carter Halkyard took gold, Trae Peterson won silver and Jaxon Nelson went home with bronze.

Canora and district peewee baseball team competes in provincials On the weekend of July 27 to 29, the Canora Reds peewee baseball team competed in the provincial peewee baseball championship tournament in Moosomin, said Jennifer Sleeva, team representative.

The team was made up of players from Canora, Sturgis, Norquay, and Invermay.

The tournament included 10 teams, with five teams playing in each pool in a round robin format.

The Canora Reds played Muenster in the team’s first game on July 27 and came out victorious. That was followed immediately by a tilt against the host Moosomin squad, which resulted in a loss for Canora.

On July 28 the Reds lost their first game against a team from Estevan. The final round robin game resulted in

a victory over the Saskatoon Blue Jays, said Sleeva.

“Canora finished with a record of two wins and two losses, which was an improvement from last year’s record at provincials,” she said. “The players had a hot, yet fun weekend.”

Team members really appreciated the efforts of coaches Graham Lamb and Kelly McTavish for giving up so much of their time and summer to coach and teach all the players, Sleeva concluded.

The players on the team were: Lucas Latham, Nate Wolos, Porter Wolkowski, Logan Wolkowski, Ty Sleeva and Hunter Lamb of Canora; Carson Ebert and Keegan Dyck of Norquay; Xage Miraflor and Kimmuel Albarracin of Sturgis, and Nathaniel Minhinnick of Invermay.

My busy days filled with important senior activities

By Kaare Askildt Being a retired senior is very hectic, so many things that I don’t have to do and other things that I must do if I can remember what they are.

I’ll walk into a room in a hurry, but by the time I get inside the room I have forgotten what I needed to do there. I look around to see if there is anything in the room that will trigger my memory, but I usually draw

a blank.

When I walk into the bathroom and see the toilet and such, then I remember right away why my body made me go in there. But rushing into the bedroom just after I got up has me wondering if perhaps I might have lost my mind, so I shake the pillow to see if I left it there, but no, just some small goose feathers flying out. Kelsey Ecological members explore new provincial park Kelsey Ecological Society members explored the newest Provincial Park in Saskatchewan, located in the Porcupine Hills area on July 28. The park has not been officially named by the Province.

“We enjoyed the wild flowers at Johnson’s ranch site and at the former site of the Danbury and Norquay Fairs and Rodeos,” said Kathleen Pitt, Kelsey Ecological Society president. “We also explored Parr Hill Lake.

“The day ended at the cottage of Ken and Melody Lozinsky at McBride Lake for a hot dog roast lunch. Thank you goes to Ken and Melody for organizing and hosting, and to Jennifer Bayer, with Saskatchewan Parks, for bringing park maps for each of us and for sharing her knowledge of the new park,” concluded Pitt.

The importance of a functioning sense of smell Continued from Page A8 nowhere to get rid of my mouthful, so I swallowed it all in a panic, then gulped in some water. I could see steam coming out of my mouth, nostrils and ears, and my tongue felt like it had shrivelled up.

I didn’t dare close my mouth because my lips were burning very hot, and I thought if I closed my mouth the lips might fuse together. I didn’t dare breathe through my mouth as I thought that would just fan the heat.

I kept breathing very carefully through my nose only. I could feel the lump burning in my stomach, and I already dreaded the moment when it would continue through my internal food processing system and be ready to be expelled from the body. I knew at that moment it would give the famous Johnny Cash tune Ring Of Fire a whole new meaning.

After I had cooled down somewhat, I grabbed my b o w l o ff t h e f l o o r a n d brought it back to the kitchen where I spooned the contents into the garbage, s e a l e d o ff t h e b a g a n d carried it outside to the garbage container, just in case so it wouldn’t burn the house down if it caught fire.

Then I went back and opened the fridge to take a look at what I had thought was homemade raspberry jam. As you might already have guessed, it was not raspberry jam at all. It was actually a red salsa made with spicy hot peppers, including jalapeno peppers, probably a leftover from visiting relatives. I spent the rest of the afternoon in the bathroom gargling and rinsing out my mouth using an entire bottle of mouthwash before I could safely close my lips.

My days are usually more mundane than that.

I’m either busy working on a story, or playing a computer card game like

cribbage, or lounging in my comfy chair reading a book.

These are all very important chores that must be done every day, no rest for the wicked.

Of course, Marion makes sure to take me on my daily walk. To ensure that I remain upright and not stumbling all over the place like I’m an old Viking drunk on Akevitt, she bought me a walker with wheels. When I grab the walker and roll it towards the door our dog Lady gets all excited knowing we’ll bring her with us

on our daily walk.

It is my chosen chore to preview the movies or shows on Netflix. That normally takes up my evening.

Marion usually joins me, and we will watch a variety of shows from comedies and suspense thrillers to real crime shows. One time we watched a true crime show about husbands murdering their wives, and she looked at me and told me that she had hidden all the knives. I told her not to worry, that she’s safe, because I’m no longer

ROSAASEN - Yolanda Rosaasen, age 96, went to be with her Lord Jesus on July 23, 2018 in Killam, AB. Yolanda immigrated to Canada from Hungary with her parents and siblings in 1928. She married her husband Spencer Rosaasen in November 1942 and they settled in North Prairie, farming both dairy cattle and grain.

Yolanda loved to cook, entertain her family, friends and even strangers. She also loved to garden, sew knit and crochet. She was well known and loved for her lefse making skills, a prerequisite for living in a Norwegian Community. She was not afraid of hard work and long hours on the farm.

She is predeceased by her husband Spencer Rosaasen, parents Albert and Rosalee Toth, brothers Albert, John, Frank, and Kelly and her daughter Eunice. She is survived by her son Lynn (Dixie) Rosaasen of Killam, AB., Debbie (Jon) Erickson of Minneapolis, MN., Vonda (Arni) Eikeland of Beaumont, AB., 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life was held July 29, 2018 in Killam AB. There will be a brief graveside memorial at North Prairie Lutheran Church cemetery on Sunday, September 2, 2018 @ 2:00 p.m.

Our history, good and bad, needs to be preserved All things considered...

As a former History teacher and concerned citizen, I have watched with interest the ongoing debate regarding the removal of

statues and changing of building names of controversial historical figures.

Like so many others, I question if this is really the

best approach in dealing with matters. After all, good or bad, history is history, and erasing references to the past is neither easy nor

wise. I am certainly not proposing that we should ignore the wrongdoings of former leaders, in fact, just the opposite. We need to better educate society.

But removing statues does not erase our past, it only hides it.

A few years ago I visited a concentration camp in Dachau, Germany. It was here that SS guards were trained to carry out the horrendous actions of the Holocaust. The guide told us that German students were taught about those darkest days in their country’s history and visited the camps (which obviously have not been destroyed.)

I couldn’t help but admire the Germans for not hiding from their past wrongdoings, but taking the opportunity to teach their young about it. Here was an example of learning from past mistakes in hopes of never repeating such an atrocity.

I question the decision by the mayor and city council of Victoria, who have had a statue of Sir John A. Macdonald, our nation’s first prime minister,

removed. Although he must be held accountable for his role in establishing residential schools, he also had the foresight to bring British Columbia into Confederation. Sir John A. was instrumental in the construction of a transcontinental railway which provided a visible border and thwarted any American expansion northward.

Does this latest action also suggest that the city of Victoria might be considering changing its name?

After all, Queen Victoria, enlightened as she was about many things, did create cruel hardship for the Irish people when she knowingly blocked the Turkish sultan from providing food to the starving masses during the Irish Famine. Are we now going to erase her memory?

Christopher Columbus might have sailed the ocean blue in 1492, but he also started the slave trade. Winston Churchill inspired his country to persevere during the Second World War, but some of his

comments suggest he had racist attitudes.

Former Saskatchewan Premier Tommy Douglas, voted as our nation’s greatest Canadian because of his role in introducing medicare, is also not without controversy. Douglas wrote a thesis in which he proposed the sterilization and segregation of people with “sub-normal” intelligence.

A l l o f t h e s e a r e r e prehensible actions, but if anything, it shows that like anyone else, these figures were human who had their flaws. Removing visible signs of their role in history does not change what they did, it only masks it.

What we need to do is a better job of preserving history and teaching more of our country’s history to our youth. The truth, good and bad, needs to be acknowledged.

Then, and only then, can we move forward with the intent of doing better.
