Preeceville woman thrilled to be manager of Canadian reining team The Canadian Reining Committee of Equestrian Canada formally welcomed Rhea Pole of Preeceville on February 8 as its new Chef D’equipe (manager) for the 2018 World Equestrian Games Canadian Reining Team, stated a news release from the Canadian Reining Committee of Equestrian Canada.

Pole was nominated to the position by the Canadian Reining Committee. Her hard work and dedication to the sport helped her attain the title.

“I was so excited to receive the news and very humbled to be acknowledged,” said Pole.

Pole needs little introduction to the reining horse industry. She has been involved in horses her entire life. She has represented Canada as an International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) Young Rider at the World Junior Championships in Europe.

Pole has worked with the elite in the reining

horse industry as both a competitor and trainer. She has worked in the US and Canada and has equipped herself with a wealth of k n o w l e d g e a n d e x p e r ience, said the release.

Reining is a judged event designed to showcase the athletic ability of a ranch-type horse within the confines of a show arena. Each pattern includes small slow circles, large fast circles, flying lead changes, roll backs over the hocks, 360 degree spins done in place, and exciting sliding stops that are the hallmark of the reining horse.

“The road to qualifying for the Canadian 2018 World Equestrian Games (WEG) Reining Team is a long and expensive one for both the trainer and owners of the horses,” it said.

“Not to mention the cost of the games once they have made the team can be anywhere from $15,000 to $35,000 USD individually, depending on the location.

horses pay their own way. That is why I have been setting up a strong fundraising campaign worldwide that has now raised over $15,000 for the Canada Team,” she said.

“We still have more to raise but we are extremely humbled at the support and response we have received.

“This level of fundraising for our team is unprecedented. Riders are encouraged to try out for the team with the actual team selected in July.”

There are 10 to12 individuals who are trying out for the Canadian team with four based out of Canada and the remainder of the participants coming from C a n a d i a n t r a i n e r s c u rrently residing in the USA and Europe, Pole said. “ Yo u m u s t h o l d a Canadian passport to compete, but you can live anywhere in the world.

The riders must compete at specific classes held worldwide to qualify and one of those classes has to be on home turf in Canada.

This spring will see many of our best riders from all over the world returning home to Canada to achieve their final qualifying score.”

The sport is a western discipline style of riding, and is currently the only western discipline i n v o l v e d i n T h e Wo r l d Equestrian Games that are scheduled for Normandy, France in August, she said.

“It is a pattern sport with riders marked on how well each manoeuvre is made within a pattern.

Quarter horses are predominantly utilized for the sport as riders use the a n i m a l s ’ a g i l i t y, s p e e d and ability that is ideal for the ring as well as on the ranch to aid in working cattle.”

The sport has come a long way with potential to have the sport declared an Olympic sport in the future, Pole said.

Duane Latimer of Bienfait was part of the World Equestrian Games Canadian Reining Team Canada which won a silver and a gold medal in 2006. Latimer is scheduled to try out for the 2018 World Equestrian Games Canadian Reining Team.

A Decade Ago

The Preeceville Hospital annual bed push for Telemiracle raised over $5,800 which was part of the total presented by the Sturgis Kinsmen and Kinettes. ***** Nordic Oil and Gas Ltd. of Winnipeg drilled two exploratory wells in the Preeceville area and was hoping to find oil in the region. ***** Kendra Jacobsen, Preeceville School Student Representative Council president, took advantage of the opportunity and pied Bill Dodge, her favourite teacher in the face as a fundraiser for Telemiracle. ***** Constable Pernell St. Pierre of the Sturgis and Canora RCMP detachment spoke to Preeceville Kindergarten to Grade 6 students during the kick off for Students against Drinking and Driving (SADD) week. ***** The University of Saskatchewan Wind Orchestra, featuring Bryce Lisitza, a Preeceville 2007 High School graduate, performed at the Preeceville School, much to the delight of the large audience. ***** Andrew Meroniuk played some toe tapping music on his fiddle at the Mini-Miracle talent show in Sturgis. ***** The Sturgis Trojan senior boys’ basketball team won the SHSAA 1A conference playoffs in Sturgis by defeating the Norquay Knights. Rail backlog again causing headaches Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but we appear to be back to 2013 when it comes to moving grains, pulses and oilseeds by rail.

According to one report, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railways two weeks ago only supplied 49 per cent of hopper cars ordered; 34 per cent for CN and 69 per cent for CP. It’s been another brutal Canadian winter when trains don’t move as well as they should, especially through the Rockies.

However, an even bigger problem is the spike in oil and wheat prices. The West Texas Intermediate price for oil has increased six per cent since November while wheat prices have increased eight per cent on the Chicago Futures exchange.

We again have reason to suspect the railways are

giving priority to moving oil over other commodities.

And that’s a big problem because it seems we lost sight of the problem since the near crisis situation of 2013.

To this, we can blame our politicians, but maybe we all should blame ourselves a bit as well.

“In all fairness, everything was going so well,” said Vicki Dutton, a Patyonarea farmer and member of the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers’ Board. “When things are going so easily, do you ever worry about the future?

“I don’t know if we lost sight of the future, but I think farmers are every bit as guilty as government.”

To that end, credit new Saskatchewan Party leader and Premier Scott Moe for at least trying to refocus government attention to this

problem.

True to his leadership run commitment, Moe has appointed former economy minister Jeremy Harrison to head the new Ministry of Export and Trade Development.

It may sound little more than lip service to a largely federal problem that the provincial government has demonstrated it can`t fix.

Given the failure of former economy minister Bill Boyd to address these issues back in 2013 when he had the co-operation of a Conservative government

and local agriculture minister in Gerry Ritz, there seems to be some validity to that.

But maybe the economy ministry is finally past its distractions that in recent years have ranged from the Global Transportation Hub controversy to fights with Alberta over licence plates at construction job sites and stocking of local craft beer on their liquor shelves.

And let`s also note Harrison may actually be rather well-suited to this role.

minister, and as a former Conservative MP who knows his way around Ottawa, much of his political career has been dedicated to these very issues.

It also helps that Harrison seems to very much like focusing on the details; things like fixing local problems like rail crossings and sidings to ensure that can be just as big a hindrance.

Unfortunately, fixing the seemingly littler problems may do little to solve the bigger problems, or for that matter, new trade problems that pop up every day.

For example, prior to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s trade mission to India, Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart urged the Prime Minister to address India`s p e n d i n g 4 0 - t o 5 0 - p e rcent tariffs on Canadian pulse crops. Unfortunately,

Trudeau`s trade mission seems to be yielding more controversy than results.

That said, it`s not all bad news for the pulse industry, with the recent successful Saskatchewan bid by Regina-based AGT Foods and Ingredients for the federal government`s $950-million federal Innovation Superclusters Initiative.

Pulse growers need all the help they can get in an increasingly tougher world market.

Dutton noted former Soviet satellite countries like Kazakhstan are emerging as major players in the world pulse market industry.

So it`s more important than ever that we do all we can to can ensure our producers have a rail system that allows them to get products to market.

Good Spirit School Division responds to concerns Recently I have been made aware of social media posts and a letter to the editor regarding a Good Spirit School Division (GSSD) Administrative Procedure on Gender and Sexual Diversity.

I appreciate the anxiety and concern that some wording within the draft Administrative Procedure has created. Please be assured GSSD is following Ministry of Education guidelines in ensuring that all students have safe and supportive school environments despite the diversity represented within each of their families.

Staff, parents, and other community members will continue to be consulted as the division moves closer to completing our Administrative Procedure.

To avoid misinformation, I would ask that GSSD parents consider the following information: •The Administrative Procedure (AP) being referenced is in

“draft” form and is still undergoing revision. The AP is still undergoing a vetting process which means it will see significant change and refinement before it is instituted.

•The intent of the Administrative Procedure was to construct guidelines around the inclusion of all students and staff within GSSD regardless of their gender or sexual identity.

•GSSD is “not” promoting or teaching a preference to any particular lifestyle. GSSD is mandated to follow the Saskatchewan curriculum and is not implementing any other curriculum which is currently a perception among fractions of our GSSD family.

•GSSD respects and appreciates the role of parents and identifies them as the most important stakeholders in a child’s education. It is not the intent of GSSD to withhold or “hide” information from parents. Rather GSSD is committed to working with parents to keep “students first.”

•GSSD is respecting provincial and federal codes of Human Rights and Freedoms. We continue to respect diversity among our children and their families by ensuring inclusive, safe environments. Inclusion means we respect all differences and treat all children equally.

•GSSD will continue to provide training and development to our staff and families as we venture to support all students within our division to create bright futures.

•GSSD is following guidelines set forth by the Provincial Governments Ministry of Education. In 2015, the document “Deepening the Discussion” was published as a set of guidelines to be followed by all provincial school divisions (Public and Catholic).

Agriculture Day highlights the importance of agriculture Last week Canada’s Agriculture Day came and went with limited awareness and almost no fanfare.

It is perhaps easy to dismiss such days in the era because there are days marking everything from avocados, (July 31), to hotdogs, an effort dating back to 1971. Even important days can be lost as the world begins to tune out the ridiculous.

Agriculture Day is a new endeavour, one which began in 2017, thanks to the effort of groups such as Agriculture More Than Ever.

Lawrence MacAulay, minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, who participated in the Canada’s Agriculture Day celebration in Ottawa, captured the reason that Agriculture Day is one worth marking in this country.

“Our agriculture and agri-food sectors contribute over $110 billion to our economy and generate thousands of quality middle-class jobs in the food processing, transportation and retail sectors across Canada,” he said in a recent release. “Our government has an ambitious plan to grow Canada’s agriculture sector in order to meet our target of $75 billion in agri-food exports by 2025.

“At a local level, family farms are the lifeblood for many rural communities; they support small businesses, their children attend local schools and they contribute in many ways to the quality of life in rural Canada.”

MacAulay, used the day as the platform from which he

officially launched the six federal programs under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

The Partnership is a $3-billion, federal-provincial-territorial agreement which is expected to help chart the course for government investments in the sector over the next five years.

Developed with input from provincial and territorial partners, as well as industry, federal programs and activities under the partnership will focus on key areas outlined in a recent release. Those areas include: -Growing trade and expanding markets ($297 million), including providing core industry services, such as timely market information and sector expertise to help improve the sector’s competitiveness, growth and adaptability, as well as advancing and defending international trade interests, improving market development and market access activities to address emerging needs of the sector, and of small and medium enterprises

(SME), which will help expand markets and trading opportunities for the sector.

-Innovative and sustainable growth of the sector ($690 million), including enhancing the competitiveness of the sector through research, science and innovation, and adoption of innovative products and practices, with an emphasis on the environment and clean growth.

-Supporting diversity and a dynamic, evolving sector ($166.5 million) by strengthening the sector by better reflecting the diversity of Canadian communities, enhancing collaboration across different jurisdictions through a new Regional Collaborative Partnerships Program, securing and supporting public trust in the sector, and improving client services.

“The Canadian Agricultural Partnership reinforces the Government of Canada’s strong agenda for agriculture. These initiatives will focus on priorities such as growing trade and expanding markets, innovation and sustainable growth of the sector, and supporting diversity and a dynamic, evolving sector. These investments will help ensure Canada’s agricultural sector remains a leader in job creation and innovation, and will help achieve our objective of expanding agricultural exports to $75 billion by 2025,” said MacAulay in the release.

Whether the new programming will achieve what is hoped will be determined over time, but importance of agriculture remains, and a day to mark that is a positive.

We’re not going to take it, B.C. Oh, poor baby, little B.C; worried about your ouchie coochie wine business, are you?

Yeah, well you can whine all you want. Cry us a river, like one that will fill the Fraser Canyon.

Alberta’s NDP Premier Rachel Notley has shown some serious spine in Alberta’s conflict with British Columbia over pipelines. Ironically, the new B.C. government is also NDP. On Family Day, no less, the British Columbia government issued a formal challenge to Alberta’s ban on B.C. wine. The Canadian Press reported on Feb. 19, “B.C. said Monday it has notified Alberta that it is formally requesting consultations under the Canadian free trade agreement’s dispute settlement process.

“Trade Minister Bruce Ralston said Alberta’s actions threaten the livelihood of the families that have worked to build B.C.’s wine industry. “‘These actions are inconsistent with Alberta’s obligations under the (trade agreement,) and we will protect our reputation and the interests of British Columbians,’ he said in a statement.”

Wow, that was rich with irony. Perhaps as rich as the oilsands are with bitumen.

Go to hell, B.C. You’re worried about a few vineyards and wineries in a very rich valley? We’re worried about the bread and butter of Alberta, and a good chunk of Saskatchewan, too.

You know, the industry that pays a very large portion of the bills? The one whose downfall in recent years has led to horrendous deficits in both Alberta and Saskatchewan?

If Northern Gateway had been built by now, as originally it should have been, it would have buoyed the price of bitumen, and with it, heavy oil (which Saskatchewan produces), meaning billions more dollars coming to our industry, and through

royalties and taxes, our provinces.

This is what Bronwyn Eyre, Saskatchewan’s new Minister of Energy and Resources, said to me in an email response in a story where I touched on pipeline politics. She said, “Saskatchewan’s oil and gas sector accounts for 15 per cent of provincial GDP, over 30,000 direct and indirect person years of employment, and accounts for between $3 billion-$5 billion annually of investment in the province.

“It is critical that Western Canada be able to diversify its crude oil export markets in order to get a better return on our products, as this will allow for greater job creation and revenues to government to provide public services and critical infrastructure, including the building of new schools and hospitals. In fact, the lack of pipeline connections to tidewater cost Saskatchewan approximately $56 million in royalties and Saskatchewan producers $800M in 2017. The Trans Mountain Expansion is critical and the project must go ahead now that it has been approved by the federal government.”

If it cost $800 million to Saskatchewan producers, imagine what it cost to Alberta producers, who would directly be exporting via the West Coast. We’re talking billions, with a very large, capital B. Personally, I would like to see Premier Notley ratchet this

fight up every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until B.C. folds.

This has gone on for years, including under former Premier Christy Clark’s five principles (of extortion). It’s gone on long enough. The patience is over. Let’s hit ’em where it really hurts.

Like forestry.

Remember that bark beetle infestation that got all the headlines a decade ago? Maybe every single load of lumber, by train and by truck, crossing the continental divide eastward bound, should be inspected at the Alberta border. And perhaps Saskatchewan should also do the same, for good measure. We wouldn’t want to run any risks now, would we?

B.C. fruit trucks might need to be quarantined for a week before crossing both the Alberta and Saskatchewan borders.

Can never be too safe, you know.

Since it’s apparently nigh onto impossible to get a liquefied natural gas plant built on the coast (even if you plan on spending $36 billion in the province), B.C. relies in large part on the Alliance Pipeline to export is enormous natural gas reserves. (I worked on building that portion of the pipeline).

If Alberta oil can’t go through B.C., maybe B.C. gas shouldn’t flow through Alberta. There are some valves near Gordondale, Alta., that would do the job. Some people in Chicago might take serious exception to that. Refer them to B.C. Premier John Horgan to explain the situation.

Maybe Western Canada should start using Seattle as its primary export port? Not just for the short term, but, like, forever? We might have to build a few rail connections, but that’s probably easier than a pipeline in B.C. right now. I know the marketing guy with the Port of Vancouver, Washington. He would love to increase their business by a factor of five, or 10.

Preeceville pee wee hockey team keeps provincial and league playoff drive alive The Preeceville Peewee White hockey team has kept its provincial run and playoff hopes alive with important wins.

Provincial games are based on the best of two games and total points from both games. Regular playoff games are the best of three games.

Preeceville played

The first game of that provincial series was held in Preeceville on January 27 with a 5-4 Preeceville win.

Kaiden Masley scored all five goals, unassisted.

The second game was held in Strasbourg on February 11 with a 4-1 final score in favour of

Preeceville students enjoy curling day The grades 4 to 6 students from the Preeceville Elementary School put away their books for the day and put their curling skills to the test in a school bonspiel at the Preeceville curling rink on January 16 Fifteen teams had a

fun-filled day of learning to curl and learning the importance of good sportsmanship, said organizers. Each team had the opportunity to score two points per win, one point per tie and one point per rock scored in each game.

Each game consisted of two ends.

Capturing the top spot with the most points was the team of Cassidy Paterson, Emerson Strykowski, Brody Descalchuk and Hannah Johnson. The

team members received a plaque.

The runner-up team consisted of team members Paje Reynolds, Viktoriya Utkina, Tessa Covlin and Zander Purdy.

Preeceville councillors have positive impression of SUMA convention held in Regina February 4 to 7 The Town of Preeceville sent five councillors and its administrator to the Saskatchewan Urban Municipality Association (SUMA) convention held on February 4-7 in Regina, and they left with positive impressions.

Delegates Johnny Petryshyn, Stacey Strykowski, Sheldon L u c i w, We l m a B a r t e l , Darin Newton and Lorelei Karcha (administrator) all enjoyed the sessions.

This is an annual event where elected representatives from municipalities across Saskatchewan get together to attend learning sessions to help attendees, as well as network with other municipal leaders, stated Darin Newton,

councillor.

There were opportunities to speak directly to government ministers, and finally a “bear pit” session, where the Premier and his ministers were all on stage and the floor was open to almost any type of question.

The keynote speaker this year was Doug Griffiths, president of a community development company named 13 Ways.

“He spoke to all of us about what we need to stop doing in order to build our communities, presenting many examples and suggestions,” said Newton.

At the health sess i o n , w i t h J i m R e i t e r, Minister of Health, and Greg Ottenbriet, Minister of Rural and Remote Health, there were more questions than time allowed unfortunately, and even fewer answers, according to the Preeceville representatives.

Councilor Stacey Strykowski asked about what the definition of a flex bed was, as that is the current term used for some of the beds at the Preeceville Hospital. The answer was a bit of a runaround, as were most in that session, Strykowski said.

The new cannabis legislation being put in place by the federal government with Bill C-45 was a hot topic in many sessions.

There was a lengthy presentation about this, and there seemed to be many things that needed to be decided and figured out in regards to legalizing cannibis in Canada, and quickly, as the federal government is hold onto summer 2018 for legalization across the country.

He deferred to Ottenbreit, who did say the beds can be used for acute care, but that there is not staffing available to service those beds. This item made the news in some areas, and received considerable attention on Twitter, according to the Preeceville delegation.

The Preeceville delegates attended the trade show and spoke with a variety of vendors relating to municipal operations.

On February 4, a welcome reception was held in the AGT Lounge at the new Mosaic Stadium. This included a guided tour of the management and player

areas of the Roughriders, said Newton.

Stacey Strykowski echoed Newton’s impressions.

“It was all good. There were several good education sessions and a powerful keynote speaker who gave us many ideas and tools to become more effective municipal leaders,” Strykowski said.

“Having the chance to speak with other leaders from across the province gave us many ideas for our own community.

“We posed two questions at SUMA. The first was in the health breakout session. It was: Where else in our province does a rural hospital have “flex beds”?

And define flex beds without using the terms respite, palliative and alternate level of care or at the very least define alternate level

of care.

“Of course none of the questions were answered,” said Strykowski.

The second question was posed at the bear pit. It was asked of premier Moe: “Premier Wall promised our 10 acute beds would be fully restored, can you honour that promise and ensure it is followed though?”

He passed the question to Ottenbreit for a response.

“He basically said we don’t have the staff to run acute beds. We weren’t allowed to follow up but the reason we don’t have that staff IS because they aren’t actively recruiting or hiring registered nurses and by changing the registered nurse schedule to ensure there is never a 24-hour schedule, we have been set up to fail,” concluded Strykowski.

Preeceville United Church members prepare to stage spring play Cast members held their first organizational meeting and reading of the United Church annual spring play at the Trinity United Church in Preeceville on February 5.

The play is scheduled to be performed in three communities over three days: in Stenen on April 27; Sturgis, April 28; and Preeceville, April 29.

Agatha Crusty and The Village Hall Murders is a comedy-murder-mystery play written by Derek Webb. Sheila Ivanochko, director, said 10 dedicated actors have taken on the challenge.

“This is the first time that this play will ever be staged in Canada. We put a local twist on the English play.”

Agatha Crusty (pronounced Croosty) is a

crime novelist, according to the play’s website. She’s also pretty adept at solving crimes. And when her sister-in-law Alice invites her to spend a few days with her in the village of Chortelby, it’s not long before she gets caught up in a series of murders which seem directed at members of the All Saints Village Hall committee.

From Toby, the vicar, and Eleanor, chair of the committee, to Harry Knott the caretaker and twins Olivia and Oliver TruscottPratt, there are a number of suspects. And with an investigating officer as incompetent as D.I. Twigg, there are plenty of laughs as the murders begin to pile up.

But, while packed full of wit and very funny scenes, this is also a

genuine murder mystery with an ingenious plot which will tax the little grey cells of the audience at the same time, said the website.

The United Church players have taken on the challenge of performing Agatha Crusty and The Village Hall Murders, a comedy murder mystery play written by Derek Webb.

Leko’s Conservation Corner – Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs

By Lindsey Leko I would be remiss if I did not talk about an excellent program that provincial conservation officers administer and support. It is called Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs (HOFNOD).

The purpose of this program is to teach youth about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and how to deal with challenges in their young lives through the great activity of angling.

One of the common issues we see is that some kids do not know how to fish, or have the equipment to do so. Well, the Saskatchewan Association of Conservation Officers (SACO) had a solution for this.

SACO currently has two fully stocked trailers that make their way throughout the province upon request from the public. Officers provide instruction and equipment free of charge to all youth and youth groups regardless of background or location.

Each trailer is equipped with open water and ice fishing rods, lures, augers, tents, heaters, nets and instructional tools to help kids learn to fish. These trailers are common at many provincial parks during the summer to support their programs, but it can also be made available to youth groups and schools.

Contact your local conservation officer or ministry field office for more information about the program or to arrange a HOFNOD presentation.

One question I am asked is how to become a conservation officer and what type of training do we take.

So let’s start with some basics . . . first, you need Grade 12 along with sciences.

I opted to take home economics rather than chemistry because I got hungry before football practice. This proved to be not a great choice, but things worked out.

If a career as a conservation officer is in your future, you will need post-secondary education.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic in Prince Albert, Lethbridge Community College, and Lakeland Campus all offer a renewable/integrated resource management program.

Depending on the institution, these programs are either a two-or three-year diploma, with an option to get your degree. Again, depending on the program, after your first year of post-secondary education, you can apply to be a seasonal conservation officer in Saskatchewan. This is a good opportunity to get your foot in the door and experience the work of

This generally involves working in a provincial park for three to four months, doing park enforcement and other conservation officer duties.

Working in our parks will get you some great experience, a feel for what the future holds, and help you determine whether or not this is a job for you.

Permanent conservation officer positions are advertised on the Government of Saskatchewan Career Centre.

Yo u m u s t s u b m i t a n application detailing your education, skills and abilities. Based on your application, you are then selected for further examination.

The recruitment process requires you to complete physical and psychological testing. Successful candidates are hired on a temporary contract position and sent to the Western Conservation Law Enforcement Academy (WCLEA). It is similar to the Saskatchewan Police College or the RCMP Training Academy.

At WCLEA you will get hands-on training and be provided with all the tools and skills you will need to be a conservation officer.

It is here you will obtain your basic pistol course, shotgun course, defensive

Conservation officer candidates were trained at the Western Conservation Law Enforcement Academy in Candle Lake. Alberta is hosting the next class in 2018. tactics, investigations, boat/ snowmobile/ATV course among many others over a four-month period.

Upon graduation of WCLEA, vacant positions are then staffed by graduates on the eligibility list.

But this is not it for our training. Conservation officers upgrade their training, education and personal development with a variety of other training offered by the ministry and outside agencies.

This includes: arson investigation; migratory bird courses; specialized interviewing courses;

de-escalation and communication techniques; problem solving skills; crosscultural and diversity training; and many others designed to assist officers in the field to do our jobs effectively and safely.

Every conservation officer has to certify annually during a week-long course on a variety of disciplines, including recertification on all firearms, defensive tactics, classroom theory and scenarios. This training is done at a training facility near Prince Albert that we share with the Prince Albert Police Department.

Canada Safety Council celebrates 100 years in safety The new year brought with it a milestone date for the Canada Safety Council, which will be celebrating 100 years of safety in Canada in 2018.

The Canada Safety Council traces its roots back to the foundation of the first national volunteer safety movement started in Canada, as the Canadian National Safety League was founded in 1918, said a release from the Council. Through its activities and collaborations, the organization merged with the Canadian Highway Safety Council and the Canadian Industrial Safety Association in 1968 to form the present day Canada Safety Council.

As Canada’s national voice for safety, the Canada Safety Council has undertaken many initiatives

throughout its history to ensure the continued safety of Canadians, the release said.

Notably, the organization implemented the Defensive Driving Course in Canada, started High School Driver Education teacher instruction in Canada, lobbied provincial governments to enact safety belt legislation and developed the country’s first national motorcycle program.

“There’s a reason that strong, impactful safety messaging has stood the test of time throughout the past century,” said Jack Smith, president of the Canada Safety Council. “It isn’t because of the number of fatalities in the country. It isn’t because of attention-grabbing statistics or percentages, and it isn’t because of the overly idealistic and unachievable end goal of

hitting the number zero on fatality counters. “ R a t h e r, i t ’s a b o u t the people and the relationships,” Smith said.

“Numbers pale into insignificance when we remember that each and every one of them represents an individual, a person who has hopes, dreams and aspirations. What makes this industry rewarding is not the achievement of milestone years, but rather the lives we’ve been able to save and the quality of life we’ve been able to improve through our efforts.”

Education and awareness are core pillars in ensuring that safety measures are taken proactively rather than reactively. To that end, and to ensure the effective dissemination of safety-related information to Canadians, the Canada Safety Council

is using this opportunity for a website refresh and re-launch.

The new site is available for viewing at https://canadasafetycouncil.org/ and ensures that safety information will be available at all times.

Whether the user is on a computer, mobile device or tablet, he or she will be able to quickly access information on a variety of topics in the fields of traffic, occupational and off-the-job safety.

Phrases and their unique application in day-to-day life

By Kaare Askildt Over the years a lot of phrases have been developed in the English language. I’ll try and write a story about Sven and Ole, using some of these phrases.

“Birds of a feather flock together,” could be an apt description of the fraternal o rg a n i z a t i o n k n o w n a s Sons of Norway, of which Sven and Ole used to be members in good standing.

However, Sven found himself about to be “hung out to dry,” as he had not been able to come up with the membership due. Ole was no better off, as the two of them had been spending a lot of time in the casino playing poker and losing money.

Lena, Ole’s wife, kept complaining about his constant losses while playing poker. She said that he obviously got the “short end of the stick,” and always ended up “in the red.” Ole got tired of Lena’s nagging, and told her to “put

a sock in it.” He decided to give her all of his monthly pay cheque, to see if she could do any better. Lena voiced her concern about all the money, saying “a fool and his money are soon parted.” But Ole said “money doesn’t grow on trees,” so “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.”

Lena did as Ole requested and went to the casino. She kept on losing and felt that she was “on the ropes.” That’s when she decided to “go for broke.” That started a winning streak. Her last hand of the night was a royal flush, so she laid the cards on the table and told the other players “read ‘em and weep.” She had tripled her money and headed home about 2 a.m. When she got home she decided to be quiet and not wake Ole. She undressed in the living room, put her purse over her shoulder, and tippy-toed nude into the bedroom. She was surprised to see Ole sitting up in bed

reading a book.

“Wow! Lena, did you lose ‘everything but the kitchen sink?’” said Ole shaking his head.

Knut, Sven’s young son seemed to have acquired a gambling addiction. He always walked around laying odds and betting with his parents and kids at school.

Even though Knut was thought to be “not the sharpest knife in the drawer,” he always kept away from the “jaws of death,” as he won most of his bets.

Sven called the principal of Knut’s school and discussed the matter.

“I need you to help me stop my son gambling. I don’t know how he got this way,” said Sven “Leave this to me,” said the principal.

A week later the principal phoned Sven and said, “I think I’ve cured him.”

“How did you do that?” inquired Sven.

“Well, Knut was looking at my rather large

beard, and he said, ‘I bet that beard of yours is false,’ so I asked him how much he was willing to bet, and he said $25.”

“Then what happened?” asked Sven.

“Well, I allowed him to pull my beard, which he found out is quite natural, and I made him pay me the $25. I’m sure that taught him a lesson or two, said the principal.”

“No, it didn’t, he bet me $50 on Monday that he would pull your beard with your permission by the end of the week,” said Sven.

Sven and his wife Kari were finally able to lure Knut away from gambling.

They had been able to get him interested in traditional Norwegian fiddle music, and had bought him a Hardanger fiddle.

Knut normally practised playing in the shed, so as not to disturb his parents. However, early one Sunday morning, he decided to surprise his parents with some fiddle music.

He pulled a chair up outside their bedroom door, sat down, put the fiddle up to his chin, and “let her rip.” He was totally off key and made a racket. Sven nudged Kari and said, “Honey, move over, you’re squashing the cat!”

The phrase is “what goes up must come down,” but Ole did it in reverse when bungee jumping.

He went down to come back up again, and he was happy that he did, once was enough. His cousin John did it the right way, he went up in an airplane, and came down by skydiving with a parachute.

I recall when I was in the Norwegian Air Force, taking an administration course at an airbase that also offered a course for parachute packing.

Apparently, it is crucial that the chute is packed p r o p e r l y, o t h e r w i s e i t could become dead wrong.

To pass the course, the student had to jump out of an airplane with a chute

that he packed himself.

The chute opened, and the student passed. If the chute failed to open, well then, the student also failed.

Oops and uffda! Just kidding! By the way, no skydiver has ever complained that the main and safety parachutes didn’t open.

Personally, I’d rather take up golf than sky diving. Playing golf, you’d hear “smack……damnit!” Whereas when skydiving you might hear “damnit……smack!”

Newsflash: If a woman experiences engine failure while driving on the highway, she’ll immediately call AMA for service. A man, on the other hand, will first open the hood, pull on some wires and hoses, scratch his head for 30 minutes, and then call AMA. A man is brave enough to become a soldier and go to war, but he’s not brave enough to be by himself holding his wife’s purse in a crowded shopping mall.

Ministry of health announces long-term care resident and family surveys As part of its commitment to improve quality of longterm care in Saskatchewan, the Ministry of Health is asking residents and their families more directly how long-term care is performing across the province.

In 2017, the Ministry of Health and the former health regions (now the Saskatchewan Health Authority) concluded the first Resident and Family Experience Survey, said a release from the Ministry. This survey provides a first-hand account of the satisfaction of residents who live in specialcare homes, as well as hearing from their families.

More than 2,700 residents and 2,400 family members responded to the survey, the release said. The results show that 88 per cent of residents and 83 per cent of family members are generally satisfied with their long-care homes.

Concerns shared by residents and family members are considered as opportunities for improvement, it said.

improvement work that corresponds to specific facility concerns. The transition to a single health authority has provided an opportunity to change the way long-term care reporting is done.

These surveys will complement the annual Long-Term Care CEO tours. Officials from the new Saskatchewan Health Authority will continue to visit long-term care facilities and report back results. Starting in 2018-19, the ministry will conduct the Resident and Family Experience Survey every two years.

“Since the launch of the CEO Tours in 2013, we’ve learned a lot, which has helped us to make improvements to benefit residents,” said Jim Reiter, Health Minister. “The Resident and Family Experience Surveys give us the opportunity to harness a greater degree of feedback from residents and their families.”

OBITUARIES

SWANSON - Laverna Swanson of Preeceville passed away at the Preeceville and District Health Centre at the age of 83. Laverna Selma Swanson was born on the family farm in Preeceville SK to Martin and Anna (nee Saugmyhr) Swanson. After attending Checkow School Laverna travelled east to Ontario and Manitoba to find adventure and work. She returned to the Preeceville area later in life to raise her children. Aside from raising a family, Laverna had a great faith and appreciation in the Lutheran Church, enjoyed music, gardening and knitting. She is survived by her son, George; three daughters, Gisele (Ace), Michelle and Myrna; grandchildren, Heath, Chad, Brodie, Shayla, Taylor, Jordan and Macy; two great-grandsons, Tristin and Benjamin; her sisters, Elsie and Ilyn; brother, Alex and their families. Laverna was predeceased by her parents, Martin and Anna; her son, Martin; and two daughters, Ellen and Melody; her brothers and sisters, Frank, Edna, Thelmar, Jack and Malcolm. Laverna was a loving mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed. A Funeral Service was held on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. from St. John’s Lutheran Church in Preeceville with Pastor Hein Bertram officiating. Words of Remembrance were shared by Michelle McKenzie. The Honourary Bearers were all of those that loved and shared in Laverna’s life. The Interment took place at Preeceville Community Cemetery with Lynnel Person, Lou Roste, Les Kozloski, Craig Sandager, Garth Harris, Grant Russell serving as the casket bearers. Memorials in memory of Laverna may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church or to the Preeceville and District Health Centre Auxiliary as gifts of remembrance.

Government proclaims Approved Private Service Home Week in Saskatchewan The province proclaimed February 19 to 25 as Saskatchewan Approved Private Service Home Week to recognize approved private service home providers

and families who support and care for people with disabilities.

Approved private service homes and approved mental health homes are

private homes in communities which provide support for people with intellectual disabilities or mental health needs, said a release from Social Services. These

homes make it possible for residents to experience family living in a community setting.

There are currently 202 approved private service homes and 180 approved mental health homes in Saskatchewan.

“Approved private service homes and approved mental health homes not only provide the opportunity to develop social, recreational and life skills, but they create inclusive communities,” said Paul Merriman, Social Services Minister.

The Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan identifies supportive housing as a priority to help secure better outcomes for people living with complex mental health and addictions issues.

“Mental health approved homes provide an important service to individuals living with complex mental health needs,” said Jim Reiter, Health Minister. “We recognize their commitment to their clients, and thank them for their good work.”

Saskatchewan Approved Private Homes Inc. (SAPH) is a registered non-profit organization and professional association that provides information, education, resources and supports to approved private service home providers and promotes approved home development across the province.

“Saskatchewan Approved Private Service Home Week is an opportunity to celebrate those individuals who open their hearts and share their homes with this province’s most

vulnerable citizens,” said Iris Miller Dennis, SAPH executive director.

This work supports the Saskatchewan Disability Strategy which was released in June 2015. It focuses on six priority areas including: transportation, respite, accessibility, residential services, service co-ordination and navigation, and awareness/understanding of the rights of people experiencing disabilities.

Saskatchewan residents and communities that have done work which aligns with the Disability Strategy are encouraged to share their accomplishments using the hashtag #SKDisability. The Saskatchewan Disability Strategy Facebook page can be found at www.facebook. com/skdisability.
