Addiction Is A Treatable Disease

Author’s Intent
Addiction is a treatable disease which without treatment threatens death or desperate life imprisonment. Having been to hell and back I share my message of hope using metaphor to avoid reinforcing the many prejudices about addiction.
Nothing matters to an addict except finding their next ‘Fix’ as, powerless against a cunning, patient and tenacious enemy they plummet to rock bottom. Those who then seek help face a tough regime of rehabilitation, withdrawal and isolation.
Lasting behaviour change, best built on spiritual (not religious) foundations, comes from working 12-Step Programs. These also provide a unified cohort strong enough to collectively ward off addictions continuing incursions.
Continuing treatment, attending meetings, and helping still suffering addicts avoids complacently relapsing into another cycle of make-believe, deceit and fear.
Recovering addicts frequently make valuable and trustworthy long-term partners and members of society, often beyond their wildest dreams.
