PRAHA Praha je vnímána jako magické město plné mystiky a fantazie, skrývající různá tajemství. V křivolakých pražských uličkách a v tmavých zákoutích jako by ožívaly starobylé legendy o alchymistech, Golemovi a neviditelných přízracích.

Ve své dlouhé a dramatické historii zažila Praha mnohá významná a slavná období. Město muselo v průběhu staletí odolávat válkám, požárům a povodním, bývalo centrem evropské velmoci s rozsáhlým územím i pouhým provinčním městem.

Podle pověsti byla Praha založena mladou kněžnou Libuší, první panovnicí na českém trůnu, navíc obdařenou věšteckými schopnostmi. Ve skutečnosti první stopy po osídlení pocházejí již z doby kamenné, slovanské kmeny se na území Prahy usadily v 6. století.

Před Slovany zde sídlili germánské kmeny a Keltové, kteří vybudovali svou nejvýznamnější osadu (oppidum) v Praze na Zbraslavi.

Rozkvět Prahy byl zapříčiněn především příznivou polohou na křižovatce starověkých obchodních cest z jižních a východních oblastí do západní Evropy. V blízkosti těchto cest postavil v 9. století první český křesťanský panovník, kníže Bořivoj (870–89), dobře opevněné knížecí sídlo — Pražský hrad. V 10. století bylo založeno druhé pražské hradiště, Vyšehrad, zpočátku nazývané Chrasten.

První písemné zmínky o Praze pocházejí od židovského vzdělance, který v 10. století cestoval napříč Evropou. Ibráhím ibn Jakúb se ve svých arabsky psaných poznámkách zmiňuje o hradbách Pražského hradu a čilém obchodu s luxusním zbožím a otroky.

V roce 1257 založil Přemysl Otakar II. (1253–78) Malou Stranu.

Románská Praha v té době však ještě nebyla jednolitým městem.

Na levém břehu se nacházel Pražský hrad s Malou Stranou, na břehu pravém stálo Staré Město, Židovské Město a Vyšehrad.

Za vlády císaře a krále Karla IV. (1346–78), který se rozhodl vytvořit z Prahy centrum křesťanského světa, se Praha stala kosmopolitním gotickým velkoměstem. V Praze byla roku 1348 založena první univerzita na sever od Alp, probíhala stavba katedrály sv. Víta a v roce 1348 bylo založeno Nové Město pražské. Roku 1355 se stal Karel IV. císařem a stanul v čele světské moci celého západního křesťanstva. Za jeho vlády náležely k zemím Koruny české Čechy, Morava, Slezsko, Lužice, Braniborsko a Lucembursko.

Císař Rudolf II. (1576–1612) byl významným mecenášem umění a vědy a také založil tradici celého českého sklářství. V Praze pobývali vynikající malíři, architekti, astronomové a filozofové.

V roce 1618 zástupci českých stavů vyhodili z oken Pražského hradu dva císařské místodržící a svým povstáním tak nepřímo začali třicetiletou válku. Ferdinand II. (1620–37) pak nechal v roce 1621 na Staroměstském náměstí veřejně popravit dvacet sedm vůdců povstání. S děsivou podívanou do Prahy naplno vstoupilo baroko, které se stalo neodmyslitelnou součástí jedinečné atmosféry města.

V roce 1784 byla císařem Josefem II. (1780–90) sloučena historická pražská města v jeden celek. V 19. století se rozvíjející Praha rozrostla o půl milionu nových obyvatel a rychle měnila svou provinciální podobu na velkoměsto.

Roku 1918 byla Praha vyhlášena hlavním městem Československé republiky. V následujících dvou desetiletích prošla prudkým růstem, stala se městem nových myšlenek a uměleckých směrů.

Po odstranění komunistického režimu na podzim roku 1989 se do Prahy začala vracet kosmopolitní atmosféra. Dnes je Praha městem, které si přes dějinné zvraty uchovalo své vynikající historické památky a zároveň se dokázalo stát moderní evropskou metropolí.

PR AGUE Prague is seen as a magical city, full of mysticism and fantasy, hiding many secrets. In its narrow, winding lanes and dark corners old legends of alchemists, the Golem and phantoms come to life.

In its dramatic history Prague has experienced times of power and glory. Over the centuries the city has had to withstand war, fire and flood; it has been the centre of a great European power with extensive territory.

According to legend Prague was founded by Princess Libuše, one of the daughters of Čech, who had led Slav tribes to what is now Bohemia. In reality the first signs of settlement date from the Stone Age, and the Slavs came to where Prague now stands in the 6th century. Before the Slavs there were Germanic tribes here, and Celts, who established an important settlement at Zbraslav.

Prague flourished thanks to its location, on the crossroads of old trading routes leading from southern and eastern regions into western Europe. In the 9th century the first Bohemian Christian ruler, Prince Bořivoj (870–889), built a new fortified princely seat, Prague Castle, near those trade routes. In the 10th century a second Prague settlement was built, Vyšehrad, originally named Chrasten.

The first written references to Prague come from a Jewish scholar who travelled through Europe in the 10th century. In his notes, written in Arabic, Ibrahim ibn Yaqub mentions the walls of Prague Castle and the flourishing trade in luxury goods.

In 1257 Přemysl Otakar II founded the Little Quarter. Romanesque Prague was not a single city, however. On the left bank was Prague Castle and the Little Quarter, on the right the Old Town with the Gallus Town, Jewish Town and Vyšehrad. The towns of Prague were finally unified in 1784 by the Emperor Joseph II (1780–1790).

Under the reign of Emperor and King Charles IV (1346–1378), who decided to make Prague the centre of the Christian world, Prague became a cosmopolitan Gothic city. The first university north of the Alps was founded in Prague in 1348, Saint Vitus Cathedral was built, and in 1348 the New Town was founded.

In 1355 Charles IV became Emperor, heading the secular power of all western Christendom. The Bohemian crown covered Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, Lusatia, Brandenburg and Luxembourg.

Emperor Rudolph II (1576–1612) was an important patron of the arts and sciences, and founded the tradition of Czech glass-making.

Prague was home to outstanding painters, musicians, architects, astronomers, philosophers and scholars.

In 1618 representatives of the Czech estates threw two imperial governors out the windows of Prague Castle, in an uprising that led indirectly to the Thirty Years’ War. In 1621 Emperor Ferdinand II (1620–1637) had 27 leaders of the uprising publicly executed on the Old Town Square. The Baroque came to Prague and became an irreplaceable part of the city’s unique atmosphere.

In the 19th century Prague gained half a million new inhabitants, and was transformed from a provincial city into an metropolis. There were new building works, and the fortifications were demolished.

In 1918 Prague was declared the capital of the Czechoslovak Republic. In the following two decades it grew rapidly, becoming a city of new ideas and avantgarde art.

After the communist regime was toppled in 1989, a cosmopolitan atmosphere began to return to Prague. Today Prague is a beatiful city that, despite its dramatic history, has preserved its superb monuments, and has become a modern European metropolis.

Nach der Legende wurde Prag gegründet von der jungen Fürstin Libussa, der ersten Frau auf dem böhmischen Thron, die darüber hinaus über hellseherische Fähigkeiten verfügte. In Wirklichkeit stammen die ersten Besiedlungsspuren aus der Steinzeit, von den Slawen wurde das Gebiet von Prag im 6. Jahrhundert besiedelt.

Vor den Slawen siedelten hier germanische Stämme und Kelten.

Das Aufblühen von Prag ist verbunden mit der günstigen Lage an der Kreuzung altertümlicher Handelswege, die aus dem südlichen und östlichen Europa nach Westeuropa führten.

Die ersten schriftlichen Aufzeichnungen über Prag stammen von einem jüdischen Gelehrten, der im 10. Jahrhundert Europa bereist hat. Ibrahim ibn Jakob erwähnt in seinen arabisch geschriebenen Aufzeichnungen die Befestigungen der Prager Burg und den regen Handel mit Luxusgütern Im Jahr 1257 gründet König Přemysl Ottokar II. (1253 – 1278) die Kleinseite. Pražský hrad byl založen knížetem Bořivojem ve druhé polovině 9. století kvůli ochraně osídlení levého vltavského břehu.

Hrad byl původně nazýván Praha a stejné jméno získalo ve 13. století i celé město.

Uprostřed opevněného hradiště stálo knížecí sídlo a kolem roku 884 byl v místech dnešního II. nádvoří postaven první pražský křesťanský kostel zasvěcený Panně Marii.

Hradčany byly od roku 1320 poddanským městem Pražského hradu, jejich osídlování však započalo již v 9. a v 10. století. V polovině 12. století byl založen Strahovský klášter, který byl plně připojen k Praze za vlády Karla IV. Císař Karel IV. proměnil Hrad v panovnické sídlo evropské úrovně. Nejvýraznějším stavebním počinem, kterým Karel IV. zcela změnil vzhled Pražského hradu a celého města, byla výstavba katedrály sv. Víta.

Za vlády císaře Rudolfa II., který z Prahy vytvořil kulturní evropské centrum, byla založena Rudolfova galerie (1598), v roce 1606 byl postaven Španělský sál.

V letech 1755–1775 nechala císařovna Marie Terezie (1740–1780) Hrad upravit a jeho fasáda dostala střízlivý vzhled.

V roce 1918 se Pražský hrad stal sídlem prezidenta Československé republiky.

Ve dvacátých letech 20. století prošel celý Hrad významnými úpravami podle návrhů architekta Josipa Plečnika.

Prague Castle was founded by Prince Bořivoj in the latter half of the 9th century to protect a settlement on the left bank of the Vltava. The castle was originally named Praha, and in the 13th century the city also took that name.

The princely seat stood in the centre of the fortified Prague Castle, and in 884 the first Christian Church of Our Lady in Prague was built.

In 1320 Hradčany became a tributary town to Prague Castle; it had already been settled in the 9th and 10th centuries Emperor Charles IV (1346–1378) made the Prague Castle a royal seat of European standard. His most important building work, one that entirely changed the appearance Prague itself, was Saint Vitus Cathedral.

Under Emperor Rudolph II (1576–1612), who turned Prague into a centre of European culture, the Rudolph Gallery (1598) and the Spanish Hall (1606) were built.

The Golden Lane was built onto the castle wall in the latter half of the 16th century.

The lane with the poorest houses at Castle first served to house the castle archers.

In 1918 Prague Castle became the seat of the president of the Czechoslovak Republic.

In the 1920s the Castle was modified according to designs by the architect Josip Plečnik. After 1989 the Prague Castle saw new building work and general renovation.

Die Prager Burg ließ Fürst Bořivoj in der zweiten Hälfte des 9. Jahrhunderts zum Schutz der Besiedlung am linken Moldauufer errichten. Die Burg wurde ursprünglich Praha genannt, und dieser Name wurde dann im 13. Jahrhundert für die ganze Stadt übernommen.

Um das Jahr 884 wurde an der Stelle des heutigen I. Burghofes die erste christliche Kirche in Prag erbaut, die der Jungfrau Maria geweiht war.

Der bereits im 9. und 10. Jahrhundert besiedelte Stadtteil Hradschin wurde um 1320 zur burggräflichen (untertänigen) Stadt erhoben.

Kaiser Karl IV. wandelte die Prager Burg in einen Herrschaftssitz europäischen Maßstabs um. Das bedeutendste Bauwerk, mit dem Karl IV. nicht nur das Antlitz der Burg, sondern auch der ganzen Prag veränderte, war der Bau der St.-Veits-Kathedrale.

Zur Regierungszeit Rudolfs II. – in der Prag zu einem europäischen Kulturzentrum heranwuchs – wurden die Rudolfgalerie und der Spanische Saal (1602) errichtet.

1918 wurde die Prager Burg zum Sitz des Präsidenten der Tschechoslowakischen Republik. In den 20er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts wurden weitere bauliche Anpassungen vorgenommen. Nach 1989 kam es zu weiteren Rekonstruktionen und zu einer allgemeinen Belebung der Burg.
