The Garden of Woven Tapestries

“How do we seemingly blur the line between the built and the unbuilt? How does one achieve the space one desires, with the intent of minimizing visual boundaries? How does one create a series of spaces- functional, recreational or otherwise and combine them to synthesize a new spatial entity?”

Silk Sanwardhan – The Story of Silk

“How do we seemingly blur the line between the built and the unbuilt? How does one achieve the space one desires, with the intent of minimizing visual boundaries? How does one create a series of spaces- functional, recreational or otherwise and combine them to synthesize a new spatial entity?”

The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of these culturally vibrant ecosystems, from the banks of the Godavari and the lake along with the bird sanctuary to the Paithani Centre where the people practice the craft and other places scattered across the town, exploring the resilience of these weavers and the nuanced stories etched into every intricately woven motif.

The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of these culturally vibrant ecosystems exploring the evolution of the handloom industry and the nuanced stories etched into every intricately woven motif The architectural narrative presented is a tribute to the resilience of the handloom weavers who, despite facing challenges, continue to weave the vibrant stories of Paithan into the very fabric of our cultural identity

As a heritage of elegance, history and tradition, the Paithani saree not only graces women but also carries within its folds, the stories of silk and gold, artistry, and the resilient spirit of handloom weavers

This Design Dissertation embarks on a journey of understanding the craft and the craftsman behind the Paithani sarees, and attempts to preserve the same for the future that stands on its threshold It aims to sustain the craft, passing it on to the hands of the future generations and hoping that their efforts turn fruitful

Pursuing Paithan

Paithan, historically known as Pratisthan is a town located about 60 kms from Aurangabad city It is known as the “City of Saints” by virtue of the many saints that have hailed from there

It is also revered for the Paithani saree, which gets its name from the town itself The saree gets its heritage and value owing to the fact that it is made entirely on a hand operated loom, woven using fine silk and silver or gold threads

Paithan & The Weaver

Paithan has been a flourishing trade and textile town since the 2 2nd century BCE however the craft of the Paithani really flourished in the 7th century and further reached its z zen th n the ear y 9th century before witnessing a s ow dec ne over time till it was r rev ved n he 960s and 970s under various government schemes and workshops

Historically, Paithan has always been c centered around he weav ng ndus ry Every household in Paithan was linked with weaving and ancillary activities s such as dye ng the s k w nd ng the zar (go d thread) o even se ng the s k sarees

Research shows that the c y evo ved the way it has in esponse to the n needs o he weav ng ndust y The flow of raw material, processing of raw materials, the communities involved in various processes and the political patronage are all the factors that resulted in the settlement pattern that we see today

Narendra Nagar Palace Documentation

On-site architectural documentation of the Annexe palace at Narendra Nagar, Dehradun with TeamARC under Ar. Jiten Desai. Summer Internship Monsoon 2022

27

Narendra Nagar Palace Documentation

In the early 1900s, Narendra Nagar became a popular destination with the British Viceroys of the time. The Palace ‘Annexe’ was added to the original palace building in 1910 to house the Viceroy and his entourage who visited Narendra Nagar fairly often. Over the years, the regal corridors of the Palace has echoed with the footsteps of many distinguished guests as well as the last British Viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten of Burma. Crowning a picturesque ridge of the mighty Himalayan ranges, the palace is a symbol of the grandeur and splendour of an era gone by.

The aim of the site visit and study was to understand the logistics of load bearing construction techniques applied in a practical realm, regional architectural nuances and detailing as well as understanding present day existing conditions and hence the need for restoration and conservation. On-site work included photographic documentation and condition mapping, producing measured drawings of the building by hand (later transferred to software) and get introduced to the concepts and process of Heritage Conservation.

The Garden of Learning

“The school, monikered as The Garden of Learning, brings the school out into the garden, where learning isn’t confined to four walls and a roof, where learning is omnipresent.”

The Architectural Design Studio aimed at proposing a Primary & Secondary High School in the heart of Panchgani, a popular hill station in the Sahyadris. Situated in the heart of the town, and surrounded by dense vegetation, the school looked at creating a campus which provided learning as one simply walked through, be it inside the building or outside, thus emphasizing on the concept of “learning is everywhere’.
