Spill Area The building sits in the industrial area of Naraina surrounded by noise and pollution. This spill area is a transition space from the main road to the interiors. To distinguish the building from the industries/factories around it, planters and bamboo is used to filter the air in spill area. The space has a canopied verandah to filter the harsh sunlight of Delhi during summers. Huge porous windows serve the purpose of a seamless transition for visitors who can glimpse a part of the interiors from outside.

Retail Store & Exhibition Space Pearl Academy requires more space for student facilities. This building will house some of those. Buildings in Naraina are clustered due to which there is a lack of space to display/exhibit student work, rejuvenate or chat. Constant traffic noise causes disturbances inside the building premises. The retail store has two entrances. One closer to the main entrance of the building and the other through the exhibition space so more people come and visit the store which will sell products made by students. The retail store is more porous with big glazed windows to expand the field of view from the outside to inside and vice versa. The black metal windows and concrete wall gives it are used to make it look spacious, clean and minimalistic so that the attention is diverted towards the products/display more.Bamboo is used on the ceilings with electrical connections for lamps and lights on display. The Exhibition space is small yet spacious with raw finishes which will bring the exhibited products to highlight.

HERITAGE RETROFIT Agrasen ki Baoli

Location: Connaught Place, New Delhi | Type: Wellness centre Duration: Jan-Feb 2015 Agrasen Ki Baoli is situated in vicinity of CP and surrounding areas, where there is hustle bustle at all times. This lead to the development of a concept that transports one away from the city life to a place that is closer to nature and provides a sense of tranquility.

Concept Wellness as a holistic concept of health combining physical, mental, spiritual and social well-being go back much further than the use of the term itself in this context. Agrasen ki Baoli is a peaceful place. The plan uses this existing quality of the Baoli to develop this area into a wellness centre. This proposed design consists of Yoga/Exercise space (with a deck) Tea shop Meditation Area Zen garden Tensile Structure

Hierarchy Different levels of the degree of meditation. The lowest level being the deepest level of meditation. Waterfall inside the arches.(meditation space) The idea is to feel close to natural surroundings and be close to oneself. There is water flowing on the steps to enhance the nature-like quality of the space and keep it cool during summers.

Water curtain and seating space for meditationpurposes within the arches.

Meditation Space Water curtain Platform Zen garden Yoga Area Tea shop

Tensile Structure Development Lotus flower is one of the symbols of meditation, hence the tensile structure was made to resemble the form in a geometric pattern.

There are various interpretations of the term wellness. In Europe it came to be associated with spas and non-medical treatments. In the US, this term had been manipulated to sell services and used as a marketing tool. In India, since long ago well has been associated with an active lifestyle including the practice of yoga and is believed to cure diseases without medicine.

Zen Garden At the Entrance there is a Zen garden. The purpose of designing a Zen garden there is to set the mood of the user right at the beginning. Zen gardens are intended to imitate the intimate essence of nature, not its actual appearance, and to serve an aid to meditation about the true meaning of life.

Yoga/ Exercise space Yoga is recognized for its ability to enhance physical and emotional health. A large area has been provided to carry out this activity, including a deck.

Tea Stall Adjacent to this space is the tea shop, where herbal teas will be available. The tradition of consuming tea after yoga dates back to ancient times and the baoli is one of the best ways to connect to the past ,both in terms of architecture and old practices of life.

Balcony deck The yoga space has a balcony deck from where one can have a panaromic view of the Baoli and soak in natural surroundings.

SOUVENIR STORE National Gallery of Modern Art

Location: Shershah Road, India Gate, New Delhi | Type: Retail design Duration: September-Nov 2014 This project involved redesigning of the New wing of the National Gallery of Modern Art. Areas of intervention included the retail gallery, lobby area and washrooms. Concept The entire design encircles around organic forms. The Curves and flow comes from the concept of organic forms in artworks. Since this space is dedicated for the display of artwork, it seemed appropriate to go with the flow and explore new forms which compliment the design. The design required a fusion of the National(Indian inspired) and Modern elements of design. National Element The foyer is designed like a courtyard surrounded by different sub-areas. The user stands at the centre of this courtyard as they enter. Modern Element While the space is designed like a courtyard the forms of the store, i.e. the tables, sofas, swing are organic, similar to the modern architecture forms.

Outdoor Tensile structures with sitting space. They provide shade to the user and view of the outdoor space of the N.G.M.A Outdoor Semi permanent structures that lead to the administrative block. They provide a sense of direction to the space. Entrance 3D Installation (with LED lights) at the Entrance of the N.G.M.A to attract the attention of the public. Entrance Scaled Up structures at the other gates as well.

Entrance Light projections on the main structure i.e. The Jaipur House on special occasions/ exhibitions.

Seating-Providing seating in the lobby area so that the public can view the gallery even while they are seated

Orientation Space: Modular sofas and swings for seating with a screen

Primary Circulation Secondary Circulation

Circulation and Movement Circulation plays a key role in designing this space. The entrance to the shape/ arrangement of furniture in the space has been dictated by how people with interact and move around the space. The free flowing forms adds an artistic character to the essentially orthogonal space.

Grounding Principles Primary Secondary

Book Display Focal point of the store is the curved Book display next to the collection of paintings is bright and vibrant and is designed to capture the visitor’s attention as they browse through the store. Orientation Space Has been designed to accomodate a few people who visit the gallery as a group for discussions. It’s right next to the balcony from where one can see paintings, which can be helpful while having a discussion about the space. There is modular seating and swings inside the area to make it playful and encourage interaction.

First Floor

As we climb up there are openings lighting up the entire staircase and spaces closer to that area. The family lounge is the space one comes across first. After spending some time on the ground floor and coming up all the family members would want to sit and relax and talk to one another. This kind of a placement makes them sit together and talk instead of heading to their rooms first. Further ahead is the guest room. Since there are not many guests coming, its placed in the west. Guests that come usually sit and interact with us. The master bedroom is spacious and on the north-west side. It has a balcony and an opening on the north side which wouldn’t allow excessive heat to come in but there will be light in the room through the day. The sibling bedroom is on the north Aeast side. It will receive good morning sun and light throughout the day. Temperature in the room will also remain pleasant. There is a balcony on the north side to sit with friends. On the south side there is a terrace and pantry area with bar. There is also a sitting area in front of the terrace to enjoy the outside view from the inside for the times when the weather is extremely harsh. There is a pergola over the terrace to prevent the harsh rays of sun coming in. The pantry has openings on 2 sides where there are bar stools for sitting, eating and enjoying food while sitting in the open. It also makes the space interactive and fun.
