As a child, I was drawn to making models out of the unused materials, this further brought in the notion of materiality, geometry, and proportions. The eagerness to learn, experiment and objectify these interests, lead me to architecture school so as to push the boundary to make a difference.

This portfolio is a collection of selected works from the first four years of architecture school. This portfolio best speaks my passion for architecture and my determination towards it.

VISION

To transform Madikeri from a popular tourist hub to an engaging tourist destination

WHY?

Madikeri is currently a tourist hub - it connects tourists to other popular destinations near the town.

Kodagu district is littered with numerous places that attract tourists and Madikeri, being the capital of the district and being somewhat centrally located, has become the access point to all these places. Tourists come to Madikeri to avail facilities required for a vacation in Kodagu or other places nearby. While there is a constant flow of tourists through the town, Madikeri lacks attractions and nightlife to retain all these tourists in the town. It has been reduced to a mere stop on the way and its potential as a tourist destination in itself is being wasted.

Our vision aims to redevelop the area around the fort as a vibrant city centre which has both attractions and nightlife to retain all different kinds of tourists in the town of Madikeri.

HOW?

A successful tourist destination is not just about having attractions and activities for tourists but excels in multiple aspects as well.

ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES

A tourist destination should have a variety of attractions and activities to offer visitors. The fort precinct currently lacks any activities for a tourist to do other than visiting the fort. Adding activities in and around the area will help keep a tourist engaged for longer periods of time.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Good tourist destinations have well-developed infrastructure and transportation networks. While the city has an excellent transport network, the infrastructure leads a lot to be desired. Prioritizing the pedestrian and developing a good network of pathways with other infrastructure such as public toilets, seating, parking and so on becomes essential.

SAFETY & SECURITY

A good tourist spot should have a reputation for being safe and provide a secure environment for visitors. The lack of nightlife contributes to the unsafe feeling in the town. Promoting a vibrant nightlife would create a sense of safety amongst both tourists and locals.

HOSPITALITY & TOURISM INFRASTRUCTURE

The presence of a welcoming and friendly local population, as well as a well-established tourism industry, enhances the overall tourist experience. Establishment of a dedicated tourism industry with information booths, guides and all other amenities a tourist may require will make it a more popular place.

By developing the fort precinct as a tourist hotspot, we establish a precedent which can be applied to other parts of the town as well.

AIM

By implementing these elements into the redesign of Madikeri, we will create an engaging tourist destination that preserves its cultural heritage, fosters sustainable development, and offers authentic experiences for visitors. Together, we can transform Madikeri into a place that showcases its unique identity, encourages community participation, and leaves a lasting impression on all who visit.

INTENT OF THE STUDIO

The school is designed to cater to students who may not thrive in a traditional classroom setting, and instead, focuses on individualized learning and experiential education in an urban setup following the philosophical ideologies of Jiddu Krishnamurthy. The school is for children age 6 - 16 years considered for day scholars of the neighborhood with a strength of 40 per class and proportional number teachers.

The process involved examination of several case studies and visiting schools to understand this idea of combining commonality with distinctiveness. Aspect of scale and how it applies to the overall vision of creating an “alternative” school, where students from grade 1 to 10 are housed under one roof was one of the main highlight of the project.

INTENT OF THE STUDIO

The studio focused on understanding the validity of abandoned architecture. The ways of deducing relations between the existing and the new. This would be further applied in deciphering the links between people, practices, architecture and the river.

Analysis happened through the act of mapping, inferences were extracted via drawings and models. Further, students were encouraged to take positions; essentially conveying a design intent(s) using analysis.

Site location: Paschima Vahini Srirangapatna , Mysuru , Karnataka

Site Area : 6000 sq m

Built area : 2000 - 2500 sq m

Duration : 10 weeks

About the Place

Paschim Vahini, located 2km south west to the historic town of Srirangapatna, has a strong traditional lineage of its own. The name of the place comes from the branch of Kaveri that flows westward, Paschim meaning west, and Vahini referring to the rive Kaveri.

Paschim Vahini has been the host to a long list of Traditions and rituals like immersion of ashes, performing last rites. These rituals are performed on ghats of the river Kaveri.

Amidst the hundreds of trees and other lifeforms, is the royal pavilion; used by the royal family to conduct the rituals. This pavilion finds itself in a state of ruin or Abandonment at present. There is also a lot of architecture dating back to the 18th century, to name a few: the bridge, a temple, the ghats etc.
