Thailand’s Western Regionสิ่งState the Environment Report 2008 รายงานสถานการณ์ แวดล้อofมภาคตะวั นตก พ.ศ.2551 ✰ According to the 2007 survey, beach encroachment and property development on public land were reported critical at Cha-um beach in Phetchaburi Province. Human impact on the coasts was well reported and trends were increasing. ✰ Kaeng Krachan in Phetchaburi Province was designated Thailand’s 28th nationalpark, covering a total area of over 2,915 kilometers. There are a number of issues that affect the Park, including forest encroachment, waste management problems, and conflicts over new land demarcation.

Major Issues

✰ There are a number of environmental issues with significant emphasis on the Sirindhorn International Environmental Park in Amphoe Cha-um, Phetchaburi Province. The waste produced by visitors includes approximately 0.45 kilogram/day/head of solid wastes, comprising 64.2 percent of food waste. The sewage treatment plant at the Park operates at the capacity of 200 cu.m/day. The most alarming parameters in Park’s water resources include biochemical oxygen demand (BOD); whereas the concentration of fecal coli form bacteria (FCB) is reported high in coastal waters. Both air and noise pollution in the Park do not exceed the standards. ✰ During the period of October 2006 to October 2007, a total of 141 cases of environmental complaints (concerning air and noise pollution, wastewater, and solid wastes) were reported by concerned agencies in the REO 8 zone, of which 59 cases were received by the REO 8. The top 3 complaints included air quality, water quality, and solid waste disposal. Ratchaburi Province had the highest complaints, followed by Prachuap Khiri Khan, Kanchanaburi, Samut Songkhram, and Phetchaburi, respectively.
