According to the most recent statistics from the U.S. Census, there are around 18 million U.S. veterans.
On and around Veterans Day, Americans take time to honor our military veterans for their pa triotism, braveness, willingness to serve and the sacrifices they’ve made to ensure our freedom
Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day World War I known at the time as “The Great War” officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France.
However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an ar mistice, or temporary cessation
of hostilities, between the Al lied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
For that reason, Nov. 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”
An Act (52 Stat 351; 5 U S Code, Sec 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereaf ter celebrated and known as “Armistice Day.”
Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, af ter World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in
the Nation’s history; after Ameri can forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars
We’re proud to present this special “Salute to Veterans,” hon oring service men and women past and present from Logan County.
We hope you will enjoy read ing it, and more importantly, that you will take the time to thank the veterans you know for their service.

Sterling Rotarians gathered re cently to celebrate the moving of the city’s Minuteman statue from the National Guard armory on South Third Avenue across the street to Columbine Park.
The statue was originally carved from a dead elm tree by Merino sculptor Brad Rhea The artist made his mark on the community in the 1980s and 1990s by using a chain saw and hand tools to con vert dead trees into wood carvings around Sterling. The sculptures were dubbed “Living Tree Sculp tures” and were touted as a possi ble tourist attraction.
Over time, as the wood began to deteriorate, some were coated in preservatives and moved to in door locations. Others, like Minute man, were used to fashion forms for bronze castings, which afforded Rhea the opportunity to use much greater detail in the finished stat
ues Rhea said he bought some of the items featured in the Minute man statue, such as the Brown Bess flintlock and powder pouch, to re tain authenticity in the finished piece.
The wood statue was converted to a bronze and installed in place of its predecessor in front of the ar mory in 2000, paid for by the Ster ling Rotary Club. When the Col orado National Guard decided in 2021 to close the armory as part
of a reorganization, retired Chief Warrant Officer Tony Cucarola, who served at the armory for 37 years, asked the Rotarians if they had suggestions about disposal of the statue. The immediate response was that it should be moved across the street to the veterans monu ment in Columbine Park. The city agreed to the move and it was com pleted this past summer.
Rhea, Cucarola and some of the Rotary Club’s members gathered
recently to celebrate the move and reminisce about the sculpture’s origins and history. Rotary Pres ident Patty Vandenbark said the club members were unanimous in their approval of the new location.
“This is just so symbolic of what our veterans are all about,” Vanden bark said. “Even if you were in the military a long time ago, I think most veterans would stand ready to defend America, just like the Min utemen did.”
