From mowing to seeding, fall maintenance sets up your lawn to emerge healthy and hardy in the coming spring. However, many homeowners stop paying attention to their lawns once cool weather sets in.

That’s a mistake. Not only does late-season yard care play an important role in overall lawn health, it minimizes the amount of time you’ll spend on maintenance once spring arrives.

WHAT ABOUT FERTILIZING? Several fertilizer applications throughout fall should help your lawn recover from summer stress; improve color, root structure and density; and help it spring back after winter.

The No. 1 rule when applying fertilizer: Always follow the instructions, including when and how much to use. Fertilizer misuse can harm the environment, and even destroy a lawn.

Also, buy fertilizer specifically blended for lawns. Of the three main nutrients in fertilizer — nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), potassium (K) — nitrogen is the most important for grass, so the first number in the ratio on the bag should be the largest.

HOW SHOULD YOU MOW IN THE FALL? Continue mowing as long as new growth appears. Cut the grass to a height of 3 inches — don’t assume mowing short will reduce time spent on lawn care.

That’s because in the fall, lawns focus more energy on root growth than blade growth. Scalping the turf stresses the roots, making it hard for lawns to resist weeds and pests, not to mention survive the winter.

As leaves drop, mulch them into the lawn along with grass clippings. Though many homeowners debate this practice, studies consistently show that mulching leaves causes no negative effects to lawns, turf or soil pH. Just don’t let the leaves pile

HOW MUCH FERTILIZER SHOULD YOU USE? Typically, you should apply 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of lawn. To calculate how many pounds of nitrogen to apply per thousand square feet of lawn: Take 100 and divide it by the first number in the fertilizer ratio.

So, if your lawn is 1,000 square feet and you have a bag of 25-0-5 fertilizer, you’d want to use 4 pounds of product per application.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO TACKLE WEEDS? For large infestations, consider a broadleaf herbicide, which comes in selective and non-selective forms. Selective herbicides only attack specific plants (dandelions, clover, etc.); non-selective herbicides kill everything they touch. For weeds within the lawn, use a selective herbicide, otherwise you’ll kill the grass.

If you’d rather not use a herbicide, you can always dig out weeds by hand, just make sure you pull out the root system or they’ll return the following spring. This method isn’t always practical for large areas covered in weeds.

CAN YOU SEED A LAWN IN THE FALL? Yes. Some pros even recommend it. Cool temperatures and warm soil conditions make late-summer to early fall an optimal time to sow grass seed. Just don’t wait until too long, or the grass won’t establish by the time temperatures drop.

As for repairing dead patches, remove the grass down to the bare soil, use a rake to rough up the soil and then add seed.

Germination usually takes around 10 to 15 days. It’s important to keep the soil moist but not drenched during this period. After it starts to grow, you should continue to water on a daily basis to encourage root growth and to prevent it from drying out.

From going to look at a place that’s nothing like the advertisement to finding the perfect home and having someone snap it up before you, the process can be grueling.

To help you weed out apartments quickly — and hopefully make the whole process easier — here are 10 things experts say to watch out for during your search.

A BORING LOCATION Location is key, according to Sam Radbill, writer for ABODO, an apartment search site. “If you’re moving from out of town, often you take the first apartment you see. But do your research and make sure it is a good personal fit,” said Radbill.

THE LENGTH OF YOUR LEASE “As simple as it sounds, some landlords will not clearly state that a lease is six or 12 months, unless you ask,” said Radbill. In addition to asking about the length of the lease, ask what happens when it ends — and how and if you can renew it. “If you love your place and your lease ends, you’d hate to have to move because they put it back on the market without asking you first,” added Radbill.

“In many cases, job offers come or personal issues occur that result in a need to move immediately,” said Radbill. “Find out if you can break your lease. Usually, you cannot. But if you can, that might make the apartment a bit more appealing.”

UNSAVORY PET REGULATIONS Many apartments have rules about pets — if you can have them, what kind, how many, size and even breed. If the apartment allows pets, ask if you need to make an additional deposit and how cleaning and repairs related to the pet are handled when you move out.

How often do you stay home and enjoy the beauty of your own outdoor space?

If your answer is not often or never, it’s time to create your own home field advantage.

With just a few simple improvements, you can make even the smallest outdoor space feel comfortable and welcoming to you and your guests. Start with these five projects and you’ll make your own yard the place to be when the weather turns beautiful.

Replace the cement with a raised deck That old cement patio or walkway in your backyard may be unsightly and uninviting, but it doesn’t have to be that way. You can make that space much more appealing by replacing it with a raised cedar deck. Easy to build and affordable as well, a raised cedar deck makes the entire area more inviting without taking up any additional space. Cedar is also naturally resistant to rot, decay and insects, and it is cool underfoot.

Light smart Your current outdoor space may have only a single light or it may have no light at all, making it impossible to use at night. To make the space more welcoming, add string lights or uplighting to your outdoor area. All home inspections should include the inspection of all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Smoke alarms should be located in the following areas: In each sleeping room; outside each separate sleeping area; on each additional story of the dwelling, including crawl spaces and

uninhabitable attics.

Most smoke alarms (smoke detectors) have a useful life of seven to 10 years. After this time period, the detecting elements start to wear out. Newer smoke detectors are more sensitive and more reliable.

Homeowners should consider changing their smoke detectors every seven to 10 years, batteries should be changed at least every year. Most newer homes have combo “hardwired” (with battery backup) smoke detectors. The smoke detectors are wired to a 120 Volt circuit as well as have a backup 9-Volt battery (for when power fails).

Carbon monoxide detectors/alarms should also be inspected for functionality and correct placement. Batteries should be replaced at least every year and the units changed after five years of use. Any dwelling that has a fuel fired heater or appliance, a fireplace, or an attached garage is required to have carbon monoxide detectors. If any of these conditions occur, the home must have an operational carbon monoxide alarm installed within fifteen feet of the entrance to each room lawfully used for sleeping purposes. Do not install carbon monoxide detectors directly above or beside fuelburning appliances, as appliances may emit a small amount of carbon monoxide upon start-up.

Combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are also available. They should be installed in all areas required for a smoke alarm/detector.

Could gardening lower your risk of cancer?

A Colorado researcher aims to find out

Don’t believe it? You’re not the only one. Which is why a University of Colorado Boulder researcher is setting out to find hard evidence during a three-year clinical trial that will measure a variety of health factors in 312 participants who will be introduced to community gardening for the first time.

“We tend to intervene from the top down,” CU Boulder professor Jill Litt said of programs to improve physical inactivity and poor diets. “You need solutions from the ground up to meet people where they’re at.”

Litt said that throughout more

than a decade of researching community gardening, people regularly say they there’s something about it that makes them feel better.

Her previous observational surveys found that gardeners eat 5.7 servings of fruits and vegetables on average per day compared to 3.9 for nongardeners. They tend to have lower body mass index. They also report an average of 2.6 days of poor mental or physical health in the past month compared to the national average of 6.2 days.

She said it’s likely because gardeners are less sedentary, often spending an average of two hours not sitting during the activity, and because they’re eating the organic food they produce. There’s some research to suggest that exposure to the microorganisms in the soil also benefits mental health, she said.

Additionally, the best ways to create a permanent shift to healthier behaviors is to get people in contact with nature and to have them build meaningful relationships, she said. Both of those are intrinsic to community gardens.

But it’s unclear if people who are involved in community gardening are more likely to already have those traits or if community gardening itself facilitates a change in people.

To put some data behind it,

Litt is measuring the body mass index, consumption of fruits and vegetables, stress and anxiety levels and other health measures of participants before planting, during harvesting and the following spring at community gardens mainly located in Denver and Aurora. The study will also use accelerometers worn by participants to measure physical activity levels.

There’s been growing interest in this type of research with a handful of similar studies also receiving grants this year, she said. But Litt said her study is distinguished from the rest due to its gold standard for measurements, noting the accelerometers.

The results of these studies could have a great impact. First, data from it could be used to help convince clinicians about the benefits of community gardens.

It could also help the gardens themselves.

In 2005, when Litt first started researching gardens, there were about 42 gardens in the Denver area. Now there are 165 gardens with 10 to 12 being built a year, she said.

The demand to build more gardens and the necessity to update old gardens are both pulling on already limited funds, she said. More people may be willing to put money toward community gardens if they realized the health benefits, she said.
