Fall sports aren’t limited to high school and college students. In this edition we’ll explore some of the ways we can stay active throughout the fall, from organized sports to some ideas that are little more out-of-the-box. But before you jump into anything, you should consider how you can avoid injury, so you can continue to enjoy yourself.

But even though warmer days are waning, that doesn’t mean that the fun is. There is still time to get in a few more days outside and a few fall-flavored events to enjoy with family and friends between school schedules and homework. TPC Colorado’s First Charity Golf Tournament Benefits

On August 13, 2018, the Berthoud Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) held its annual Chicago Title Spartan Charity Golf Tournament at TPC Colorado, the brand new championship golf course in Berthoud.

This was the first charity tournament hosted and sponsored by the newest TPC golf course.

The Chicago Title Spartan Charity Golf Tournament funds scholarships for seniors graduating from Berthoud High School, home of the Spartans. “We are so honored that TPC Colorado chose to sponsor our charity for its first tournament,” said Deanne Mulvihill, Executive Director at the BACC. “They are proving to be dedicated to community involvement and we couldn’t be happier to have them here.”

Starting in 2012, the scholarship has been awarded to locally active, Berthoud High School graduating seniors. “We are a small, tight-knit community, so being able to offer students from our local high school a scholarship to help with furthering their education is important to us,” said Mulvihill. “In the past we’ve been able to give a few seniors between $500 and $1000 each, and in May 2018 we gave $4,500. Now, with TPC Colorado as a partner, we were able to raise $29,192 and our goal is to get to $30,000 by May 2019.

Treating SPORTS INJURY When a St. Vrain Valley volleyball player twists her ankle coming down from a block or a football player pulls a muscle during a play, trainers from Front Range Orthopedics and Spine are most often the first responders.

Through a partnership with the St. Vrain Valley School District, Front Range Orthopedics and Spine has a certified athletic trainer assigned to each high school in the district.

They’re on standby at games and many practices -- doing everything from wrapping ankles to checking for signs of concussions.

In addition, Front Range Orthopedics and Spine runs a “Bumps and September/October 2018

Bruises” Clinic from 7 to 8 a.m. on Mondays and Thursday during the school year. The clinic is located at 1610 Dry Creek Drive in Longmont.

St. Vrain Valley student athletes who are injured during a school-sponsored sporting event or practice are eligible to receive a free evaluation of their injuries, including X-rays if warranted.

Monitoring and treating injuries in high school athletes is imperative, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. While teenage

athletes are injured at about the same rate as professional athletes, the injuries affecting high school athletes are often different from those affecting adult athletes. That’s because high school athletes are still growing, and that growth is generally uneven.

That means bones grow first, which pulls at tight muscles and tendons, the academy explains. Uneven growth can make student-athletes more susceptible to muscle, tendon and growth plate injuries.

Leslie McConnon, marketing director for Front Range Orthopedics and Spine, says the business has long been a strong supporter of high school athletics. The trainers, many

could be associated with injuries to the elbow and swim strokes can be associated with injuries to the shoulders of swimmers.

The doctors are living in the Longmont community, and even have children in St. Vrain. They want to be able to give back and make sure students are getting top-notch orthopedic care. Coaches within the district have described the training partnership as a godsend.

The Bumps and Bruises Clinic has also been a tremendous resource for athletes, says Rob Berry, Director of Athletics, Activities and Fine Arts for St. Vrain Valley School District.

“Athletes are able to get in easily for further diagnoses, they receive possible treatment, X-rays, braces or splints as well as consultation with a doctor on what is needed next,” 14 LONGMONT MAGAZINE

Injuries among high school athletes falls into two basic categories: overuse injuries and acute injuries, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Both include injuries to the soft tissues (think: muscles and ligaments) and bones. Acute injuries involve sudden trauma, like a collision between players. Common acute injuries with high-school athletes are bruises, sprains, strains and fractures. Of course not all injuries happen because of single fall or collision or landing wrong on an ankle, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons explains. Overuse injuries happen over time and when parts of the body don’t have enough time to heal between playing. These can affect muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones and growth plates. Kevin Mayeda, a Certified Athletic Trainer with Front Range Orthopedics and Spine, says he understands that having to sit out due to an injury is a great fear for athletes.

When athletic trainers aren’t noticing improvement in athletes they’ve been working with, they can send them into the clinic for X-rays and further evaluation.

“We also see a lot of athletes that come in on their own, that have not been able to connect with the athletic trainers yet, to have their injuries taken care of,” Mayeda says. Some of the common injuries Mayeda says that he sees include overuse injuries, such as tendonitis. “It is important to treat these injuries aggressively and stay on top of them because if you don’t, they tend to nag athletes all season and usually do so the most when it is most important to perform well—which is the post- season,” he says. In addition to having trainers assigned to high schools and the Bumps and Bruises Clinic, Front Range Orthopedics and Spine also has an after-hours, walk-in clinic. The after-hours clinic was developed to treat acute bone and joint injuries and is staffed by specialists from Front Range Orthopedics and Spine. Orthopedic providers and sports medicine specialists can use state-of-the-art technology, practices and treatments for musculoskeletal injuries. As an alternative to the emergency room and urgent care, the clinic can be a more affordable option. Examples of injuries treated at the clinic include: sprains, strains and tears; bone fractures; back and neck injuries; sports-related injuries; hand and wrist injuries; shoulder, arm and elbow injuries; hip, leg and knee injuries; foot and ankle injuries. Of course, it’s important to keep in mind that conditions such as head trauma, deep lacerations and non-orthopedic conditions like the flu are not appropriate for this walk-in clinic and you should consult your primary care physician or local urgent care or emergency room.

LOCAL COLLABORATION GIVES BACK TO LOCAL NONPROFIT Two Longmont-based businesses have teamed up to create a unique collaboration project designed to give back to the Longmont community.

Colorado Crafted is an online shop that hand-picks the best products being made in Colorado and makes them available in gift collections. They have collaborated with StickerGiant, a Longmont-based sticker manufacturer, to create a custom collection of locally made snacks and treats—with 10 percent of all sales being donated to Longmont Meals on Wheels.

“One of our goals for this year is to use our platform to give back to our community,” Sarah Welle says, “and we’re so excited to have connected with StickerGiant. They’re a much larger business than we are, and partnering with them is giving us the opportunity to amplify what we’re trying to do.

“We thought this partnership was a great way to test this idea out and we love the fact that it’s keeping every step of the process—from sourcing to packaging to making the donations —local in Longmont.

This is the true tale of a group of kids who were having the time of their lives. And it’s the story of how a community can help them get back on their feet after a really tough break.

A few years back, the ladies of the league saw an opportunity to get kids involved in roller derby and initiated a juniors program.

Although it didn’t take the first time around, the potential was still there for the right circumstances to reopen the door.

Enter Chelsea Pohl (aka Leslie Nope … derby name), who began skating with the Boulder County Bombers in October 2016. “The September/October 2018

actual sport is a manifestation of working through challenges and learning to push yourself beyond anything you previously thought you were capable of,” she says. “I never ever thought I’d be able to play the game, let alone learn to skate, but I did! I realized fairly quickly that it was something that I wanted to be able to share with my two daughters. I thought, ‘If only I had this when I was a kid.’”

With the backing of the league, Chelsea and some teammates started the co-ed Boulder County Bottle Rockets junior division in summer 2017. Anyone can start without experience. The training starts with beginners and teaches the basics of skating before the child ever competes.

For Chelsea, the family connection is very real. “I think the roller derby community is a huge part of why it is attractive to families,” she explains. “It is a welcoming and empowering group of people who seek to build people up and help them cope with the rest of the challenges in life.”

Now the Bottle Rockets program is on hold as the league waits to see what materializes. Pohl says the loss of the practice space has been devastating: “We don’t have a place to practice regularly and therefore we have put the program on an indefinite hold until something becomes available that fulfills the needs of the league. We have had a couple of sessions at outdoor rinks, and one of our trainers set

The entire roller derby community struggles with the issue of practice space. The unique space requirements make it difficult for the league to find anything affordable.

They haven’t had any luck with asking regular sports facilities to host them. What they need most is a dedicated space that can host their bouts/tournaments and that can become the home of the Boulder County Bombers and the Bottle Rockets. “Roller derby empowers people and is a community of people who lift each other up,” Chelsea says. “There is nothing more valuable than giving those gifts to the youth in our lives.”

Elite-X Softball is a competitive girls’ fastpitch softball club, the only girls’ softball club here in Longmont. GEAR UP for local sports as a family Since boyhood, Christopher Salt has cherished the freedom of cycling: wind in hair, heart pumping, legs zooming. Now the owner of Longmont Bicycling Company & Cafe, he helps people fall in love with bikes.

“It’s cliché, but families who cycle together, or who exercise together, are more likely to stay together,” Salt said. After all, time outdoors as a family fortifies relationships and builds fitness – two goals the City of Longmont advocates. Greenfield noted that Longmont Recreation provides helmets dependent on financial need.

Longmont Recreation offers indoor cycling classes, as well as a winter biking class with tips for cyclists riding in snow. “With layers, visibility and awareness,” Greenfield said, “we are lucky in Longmont to be able to bike all year long.”

TENNIS – AN ECONOMICAL TEAM SPORT

In 2005, a few local tennis players resurrected the former Longmont Tennis Association (LTA), said LTA member Dan Raykovitz, to “offer more tennis options for area players.” Raykovitz, who began playing tennis in his 40s nearly 20 years ago, said it’s one of the easiest sports to commence. “After the initial expense of a racquet, pick up a can of balls for $3, and you’re good to go,” he

Aimed for cyclists ages 14 and up, the class helps “individuals seeking more ride options, whether from their home to the greenway path or seeking new destinations in and around Longmont,” said Lauren Greenfield, traffic safety coordinator with the City of Longmont. She helps cyclists map the best route from their home to a destination September/October 2018

and said the class, offered for the first time this summer, is popular with students riding from home to school.

Greenfield explained, “As flood restoration continues along the greenways, community members are often seeking alternative routes to the closed greenway sections, and this class will assist in identifying the safest route.”

She added, “The City of Longmont bicycle map is a great resource, and people enjoy the legend as well as LongmontMagazine.com

Popular culture is again the source of a new interest in the multidisciplinary skills of the modern ninja warrior – competitions where athletes dodge obstacles, climb seemingly impossible walls and traverse ropes, minus the ninja sword activities of those bad 1980s movies.

There’s been so much interest generated by the American Ninja Warrior show, itself a spin-off of a successful Japanese TV series,

that athletes have begun to use those chaotic and improvisational obstacle courses to build muscle and agility.

And if it looks like a giant playground for adults, of course the kids are going to want to be involved, as well.

Families can test their skills at Longmont’s Warrior Playground, a facility set up to emulate some of the challenges thrown at those televised athletes. It’s located in the back of Grit Fitness Center, and was created by local per-

GO CLIMB A TREE. LITERALLY. Can one really find wisdom and bliss by climbing a tree, and does that work for the kids, as well? That’s the message of Tree Climbing Colorado instructor Harv Teitelbaum, who will be leading family tree climbing classes this fall at the Longmont Rec Center.

The Dances with Branches courses are designed to use a rope system to allow climbers to get up into the crown of a full-grown tree and experience a very different perspective, while developing muscular skills at the same time.

Teitelbaum, a Sierra Club activist and former Division of Wildlife employee, says he got interested in recreational tree climbing during his working years and decided to become fully certified as an instructor.

“It’s a great, all-ages activity, a way for people to get back into using their bodies and experiencing nature up-close,” he says.

Tree Climbing Colorado’s courses mix safety – full saddle-styled harnesses and helmets involved – with some hands-on climbing experience and the chance to swing or even walk on the branches of a tree. Once climbers are rigged up, they use their own body power to climb up as high as they’d like.

The courses help build perseverance and independence, Teitelbaum says, and a little exposure to “tree time” offers some great perspective, for climbers aged seven and older.

Besides boosting productivity, research suggests that people who work in shared co-working spaces report lower levels of loneliness, which is commonly reported among freelancers and solopreneurs because they usually work in isolation.

“My son looks forward to coming here everyday because he likes his new friends and all the crafts,” said Kain.

While Family Village sounds like a dream come true for working parents of young children, Piazza said the space is inclusive to anyone who needs a place to work. It’s especially useful for anyone who likes the idea of joining a community of other self-employed and remote workers. Members can take advantage of countless opportunities to expand their business horizons, from business workshops and writing classes to weekly networking opportunities, she said.

Plus, anyone who needs to add some wellness into their world can sign up for yoga, Zumba or qi gong classes.

And voice lessons too. Some classes cost extra, said Piazza, but others are included with the membership fee.

In a 2017 UK-based survey of freelancers and self-employed people, 39 percent reported feeling lonely; and at 54 percent, millennials topped the list.

In a 2015 survey published by Emergent Research, 89 percent of people in co-working environments reported feeling happier since joining, while 83 percent reported feeling less lonely. The survey also suggests that coworking environments help boost motivation and career success.

beyond self-employed workers. In fact, large corporations use companies like WeWork, headquartered in New York City, to outfit satellite offices, a single floor or entire building, said a WeWork company spokesperson, via email statement.

“25 percent of the Fortune 500 now office out of WeWork,” he added. “In Denver, a great example of a company we work closely with is Full Contact, who announced in July that they are moving their HQ to WeWork.”

WeWork also plans to launch another coworking space in Boulder, but because of a “pending lease agreement,” could not release dates, said their spokesperson.

Eventually, Piazza would like to expand Family Village so that it too partners with larger companies that need to accommodate their remote staff.

Longmont Times-Call helps seniors, families navigate successful aging at

BY SHELLEY WIDHALM for LONGMONT MAGAZINE To age successfully takes some planning ahead—and Longmont Times-Call wants to give as many seniors and their families and caregivers the information they need about everything from health care to housing.

The 2018 Successful Aging Expo on Oct. 9 will combine vendor booths with presentations about products and services geared to the senior population ages 55 and older. Last year, 200 to 250 people attended the four-hour event, and the expectation is for 250 this year.

duced to a whole lot of people that have products and services geared to them,” said Christine Labozan, retail advertising director of the Longmont Times-Call, Colorado Hometown Weekly and Broomfield Enterprise newspapers. “It helps centralize all those resources into one place.”

The informational expo, offered for about 15 years, changed venues this year to a more centralized location in Longmont. It will be at the Wild Game Entertainment Experience, an entertainment center and restaurant with a banquet facility that will serve as the site for the expo.

Last year, the expo was at LifeBridge Christian Church and was originally at the Longmont Senior Center, which it soon outgrew and has since been at several locations.

The expo is geared to seniors and their families and caregivers of older adults and is a service Longmont Times-Call provides free to the community, Labozan said.

“It’s geared to children of seniors who are working with their parents for planning the next stage of their life, as well as seniors,” Labozan said. “It’s really for both.”

The proactive parent’s checklist for

(BPT) - A new school year is quickly approaching, and while you probably have supply lists and bus schedules in hand, there are a few other things parents should tackle to get a head start on the back-to-school season. Prepare kids for the best school year yet by handling these important tasks that sometimes are overlooked during the hectic summer.

ROUTINES

Before the school year starts, begin building a routine so children can adjust properly. This means structuring activities so kids know what to expect, including healthy meals at the same time each day and a regular bedtime.

Getting enough sleep is critical to students’ well-being and ability

He suggests establishing a bedtime routine before school starts to help children fall asleep and get a good night’s rest. He adds that children rest better if they skip caffeine after dinner, get regular exercise, turn off electronic devices an hour before bedtime, and silence phones so text messages or alerts don’t disrupt sleep.

Children’s Center pediatrician and vaccine specialist, advises parents to ensure their child has recommended vaccinations and to be aware of changes to those recommendations.

He suggests parents contact their family physician or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s online registry to stay informed of the recommended school admission vaccine requirements for their child.

For example, children can now be vaccinated for human papillomavirus (HPV), at age 11, rather than having to wait until they are 16 years of age.

What’s more, some vaccines are now more easily administered. Jacobson says, “We’ve combined the measlesmumps-rubella vaccine with the chickenpox vaccine so a single dose will cover all four of those diseases.”

If your child is starting a new school or after-school program, you may be required to supply medical records or vaccination forms. Doctor’s offices should be able to supply this to you at no charge simply by calling or stopping by and filling out a request, just make sure to allow a week or more for processing.

Oktoberfest, October 5 and 6 in Longmont’s Roosevelt Park, is ranked as a “Must Visit Oktoberfest” by DRAFT Magazine. The featured Friday night headliner is JJ Grey, known as a fearless, blissful performer, and his band Mofro. Left Hand Brewing is the main sponsor but there are more than 10 breweries featured. There’s local food from Abo’s Pizza, Cheese Love Grill, Georgia Boys BBQ, Boulder Sausage and SAMPLES. Children’s activities include Dizzy Family Fun Center and the Home Depot kids area.

The Dia de los Muertos exhibition is in Longmont Museum’s two-story Swan Atrium starting October 12. In September/October 2018

partnership with the Mexican Cultural Center, the Longmont Museum is showcasing Xólotl: Dios Perro, a monumental alebrije sculpture by international artist Oscar Becerra.

Alebrije are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures. Altars honoring the dead, or ofrendas, created by community members will also be a central part of the exhibition.

Centennial State Ballet presents

associated school, Longmont Dance Theatre Academy (LDTA). LDTA is home to the Pre-Collegiate Ballet Intensive Program (PBIP), the training ground for CSB performers.

Students in the PBIP program receive superior instruction in ballet, pointe, variations, modern, and related disciplines. The students also have multiple performance opportunities throughout the year that serve the Boulder County community.

Centennial State Ballet (CSB) will perform The Secret Garden for their Fall Showcase at the Longmont Museum & Cultural Center’s Stewart Auditorium on Saturday, September 29. The nonprofit youth ballet organization celebrates their 21st performance season, entitled Coming of Age, with this first performance.

The title of the Season reflects the celebration of 21 years of presenting exceptional ballet performances to the Boulder County Community.

“Turning 21 years of age in our culture means you become an adult; it’s a coming of age. It felt fitting that this was our theme for the season,” explains Kristin Kingsley.

CSB is proud to be a part of the Longmont Arts Community. The vision of CSB is to provide live ballet performances to the community.

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS CELEBRATION November 3, 11 a.m.- 3 p.m.; Longmont Museum, 400 Quail Rd., Longmont People of all cultures honor the memories of their ancestors. In many parts of Mexico, South America, and the United States, El Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a time to honor and celebrate deceased loved ones. Community participation is an essential part of this holiday that is full of life, reflection, food, family and fun.

Longmont’s annual Día de los Muertos celebration is the Longmont Museum’s signature event and the largest Day of the Dead celebration in Colorado. The celebration demonstrates how a diverse community can come together to share a common desire – to honor our ancestors and keep their memories alive.

TURKEY TROT November 10; Altona Middle School, 4600 Clover Basin Dr., Longmont Show your state pride and join this annual 10K or 2-mile fun run/walk, now in its 43rd year.

Proceeds benefit the City of Longmont Youth Scholarship Fund. Canned food donations for the OUR Center will also be collected during packet pick up on both Friday and Saturday. Longmont Turkey Trot proceeds benefit the City of Longmont Youth Scholarship Fund.
