AIMS COMMUNITY COLLEGE

AN INSTITUTION OF DISTINCTION IN THE HEART OF GREELEY

Nestled in the heart of Greeley lies Aims Community College, an institution of higher learning that has been transforming lives and shaping futures for more than half a century. Renowned for its commitment to educational access, Aims has carved out a distinct niche in the academic landscape, proving itself to be a true community pillar and a launchpad for career success.

Since its inception in 1967, Aims Community College has blossomed into a shining example of academic excellence. With a workforce of approximately 1,350 faculty, staff and administrators, the college serves around 8,000 students annually across its multiple locations in Greeley, Fort Lupton, Loveland, and Windsor.

Aims extends its educational reach beyond traditional classrooms by offering a wealth of learning opportunities through more than 200 degree and certificate programs. With an impressive 4,000 courses offered day and night, on weekends, and online, Aims has demonstrated its unwavering dedication to providing accessible education.

“Aims is more than a place to learn. It is a cornerstone of our community’s development, and our model of education is built on the belief that everyone should have access to quality education,” said Aims Director of Communications Julia Smith.

A Student-Ready Approach

What truly sets Aims apart from other community colleges is its unique philosophy. It focuses on being ‘student-ready’ rather than expecting students to be ‘collegeready,’ meeting them at their unique points of need. “We aim to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve, nurturing an environment rich in inclusivity and innovation,” Smith adds.

Celebrating Individuality: The Aardvark Spirit

Another defining trait of Aims is its mascot — the aardvark. Much like the aardvark stands out in the animal kingdom, Aims prides itself on its unique and progressive approach to higher education. The college’s innovative, state-ofthe-art facilities reflect this spirit of individuality, which mirror its forward-thinking ethos and

commitment to student success.

Making Education Affordable

As one of the most affordable colleges in Colorado, Aims provides a cost-effective pathway to quality education. Whether a student’s goal is to graduate with minimal debt or transfer to a four-year college while cutting expenses by half, Aims stands as a beacon of financial accessibility in the world of higher education.

Engaging with the Community

The Aims journey extends beyond academics. For more than 56 years, Aims has maintained a symbiotic relationship with the northern Colorado community, continually evolving to meet its needs. “Our approach is simple, broad, and practical. If there’s a need for a course, we’ll teach it,” explains Smith, quoting Dr. Edward R. Beaty, Aims’ first president.

Aims actively invests in regional programs and partnerships across northern Colorado, not only setting up pathways for career success for its students but also contributing to the development of the region. It seeks to create a community that is as diverse as the population it serves, working tirelessly to increase the enrollment and success of first-generation, nontraditional, and under-represented groups.

“Aims Community College was established to serve the community, and that’s exactly what we’ve done for the past 56 years,” Smith says. “Community isn’t just in our name – it’s at the heart of everything we do.”

As Aims looks towards the future, its unwavering commitment to accessible, excellent education and community engagement promises to further cement its position as a stalwart of higher education in the region.

A Legacy of Excellence

Today, Aims stands tall with a legacy spanning over half a century and boasts an alumni network of more than 35,000 graduates. This legacy is a testament to its commitment to the community, where it has become a trusted place for education and personal growth.

“Being part of the northern Colorado community drives us to continue offering innovative educational solutions that meet the evolving needs of our region,” Smith shares.

A Vision for the Future

As it forges ahead, Aims remains dedicated to creating an inclusive and diverse environment that nurtures talent and drives innovation. The institution is keen on strengthening its community connections and enhancing its programs to continue providing opportunities for success.

“We are committed to helping our students carve their individual paths to success, providing them with the resources they need to excel in their chosen fields,” Smith said.

Aims Community College is more than just a place to earn a degree — it’s a driving force for personal growth, community development, and innovation. By embracing diversity, fostering inclusivity, and continually striving for excellence, Aims is not only educating the next generation but also shaping the future of the northern Colorado community.

Greeley Area Business Leaders Work To Support Growing Startup, Tech Industries

As new technologies and continued innovation transform the business landscape, Greeley area business leaders are working to support new and existing businesses to thrive in the changing environment.

Despite national workforce challenges and economic concerns about a possible recession, the Greeley area has continued to see economic growth.

“In ‘21, we saw a huge influx of startup companies, and I think that was due to COVID,” said Lisa Hudson, executive director of the East Colorado Small Business Development Center. “So last year, we saw more sales increase, more job creation, and I think we’ll see that continue this year.”

Greeley was recently selected as one of 17

cities to participate in the Good Jobs, Great Cities Learning Network, a national program to boost economic and workforce development. The network is expected to help boost economic development, supporting startup and scaleup businesses.

Phil McCready, Greleey’s economic development manager, said there are two ways to spur economic development: attract outside investors or grow internally.

“Many startups don’t actually even come from your home area, but they’re looking for places where they can grow and scale, and that’s a very dynamic part of economic development,” said Phil McCready, Greleey’s economic development manager. “Creating a good environment for those companies to do that actually makes it easier to attract companies that are moving in and investing.”

Nearly half of jobs in the U.S. are created by small businesses. By creating a good

environment for businesses to start and grow, it’s easier to attract those outside investors, McCready said.

“It strengthens Greeley’s story as a dynamic economy having the skills that companies need for the new types of work,” he said.

The city continues to work with the Monfort College of Business at the University of Northern Colorado to help foster that environment. The college hosts the Entrepreneurial Challenge, an annual business pitch competition, and offers entrepreneurial courses. It also recently developed a computer science course and is considering more in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics space, including artificial intelligence.

City leaders are hopeful the attraction of the tech company Bitwise Industries to Greeley will also grow the workforce’s skillset to support and attract tech companies. The company bills itself

as building “tech economies in underestimated cities” on its website, by facilitating tech training and digital apprenticeships.

The Small Business Development Center recently hosted a class on AI — an offering that garnered a lot of interest, Hudson said.

Hudson and other community leaders are hopeful the High Plains Library District’s Library Innovation Center in downtown Greeley will be another hub of great resources for local businesses. The new library’s offerings include recording spaces, meeting spaces and other creative spaces for 3D printing, woodworking and more.

Jaime Henning, president and CEO of the Greeley Area Chamber of Commerce, believes the city is well-positioned to support entrepreneurs.

“Greeley is known for its legacy work around creating whole new industries, and I think that energy is still here,” Henning said. “I see it in the work we’re doing with our young professionals and in their energy, and I think you’ll see more to come this fall.”

The chamber is developing new events for startups, Henning said.

“There’s definitely that mindset around incubation and support that I think happens because we are a small and inclusive community,” she said. “I think that’s definitely an important thread that you see here in Greeley.”

The city’s efforts to build up the startup community over the past couple of years have already led to some interesting companies, McCready said. More than 200 people signed up for “Startup Greeley-Weld,” a networking group for business innovators, entrepreneurs and startups, on the group’s Meetup page at meetup.com/startupgreeleyweld.

The city is working with private sector groups to build an incubator program and the infrastructure to give more support to startups, including investor networks, connections to higher education, internships and other resources, McCready added.

At the Small Business Development Center, offerings have recently grown to include a sustainability consultant and support for Spanish speakers. The center helps business owners across 20 counties navigate local resources for their businesses, including local programs available through the city and county.

“We are always open to hear what our market needs and what they think should be put out there, so if people have ideas, we’d love to hear them and support those efforts,” Hudson said.

As wider economic concerns have continued, including fears of a possible recession, business owners are carefully planning ahead. After some businesses survived flooding nearly 10 years ago and now the COVID-19 pandemic, they’re putting an emphasis on strategy, according to Hudson.

“I think that’s a big reason why small business owners are looking to develop strategy and backup plans on what to do if that comes. They want to be prepared,” she said. “I think strategy development is huge right now.”

Area businesses have experienced some of the workforce challenges that have affected companies since the pandemic. As a result,

business owners are looking for ways to recruit and retain talent. Part of this includes a renewed focus on company culture, Henning said.

“I also see businesses who are having some of the best numbers they’ve ever had,” she added. “So I think it’s a mix of companies that are struggling, but also some companies are thriving as well.”

McCready said the city’s business sector continues to grow, including its industrial spaces. Work is underway on an industrial site in east Greeley, where city officials hope to see expansion to provide new industrial space and create new jobs on that side of the city. In west Greeley, Highpoint Business Park, southeast of U.S. 34 and Colo. 257, has continued to expand, including work on a new industrial building and commercial space.

The city’s work to support continued economic growth also incorporates regional efforts in the tech and innovation world, including Innosphere Ventures in Fort Collins, the Rockies Venture Club in Denver and the CSU Spur center in Denver.

“There’s a lot of energy that’s going into the world of innovation and technology across a whole range of different spaces,” McCready said. “So that’s something that we have to be really mindful of, because that’s what will help us stay ahead and stay competitive.”

UNITED WAY OF WELD COUNTY

OVER EIGHT DECADES OF COMMUNITY IMPACT

For more than 83 years, United Way of Weld County has been an indomitable force in the community, embodying the spirit of collective action and shared responsibility. Through its extensive network and robust initiatives, the organization works relentlessly to create a stronger, healthier Weld County.

Since its inception in 1940, United Way of Weld County has been more than just a nonprofit. Its purpose is to address the county’s most pressing challenges through catalyzing changes that bring about a better life for us all. It envisions a community where children are proficient readers by the 4th grade, young adults are gainfully employed by age 25, families have stable housing, older adults age well, and individuals can effortlessly access the help they need.

Embracing Community Challenges

United Way of Weld County distinguishes itself through its approach to fundraising. “We are not raising money for the sake of distributing it. Instead, we focus on attracting and pooling resources to solve community challenges,” shared Melanie Woolman, president & CEO.

This perspective sets United Way apart, illustrating its commitment to generating meaningful, long-lasting change. Rather than merely applying a band-aid solution, United Way aims to understand and tackle the root causes of local issues.

Solving Enduring Challenges

United Way is equipped with a comprehensive vision, deep understanding, organizational flexibility, and extensive connections. “With these attributes, we are well suited to take on and solve some of Weld County’s most enduring challenges,” explained Melanie. The organization’s responsiveness to community needs is a testament to its effectiveness. Following the devastating 2008 Windsor tornado and the 2013 Northern Colorado floods, United Way spearheaded longterm recovery efforts, demonstrating its capacity to mobilize and act swiftly in times of crisis.

Celebrating Diversity

United Way values the rich diversity of the

Greeley area and Weld County as a whole. Melanie spoke fondly of the ethnic and racial diversity, diverse communities, varied food and entertainment offerings and a wide range of industries.

“We love the diversity in Weld County. It’s one of the reasons we are so committed to this area,” Melanie offered. “The various backgrounds and perspectives in our community enrich our work and inspire our initiatives.”

Fostering Community Connections

At its core, United Way is about bringing people together. It fosters connections between individuals, businesses, foundations, and public and private organizations. These shared efforts lead to community-wide solutions and a stronger Weld County.

“Our work is as much about creating a space for collaboration as it is about implementing initiatives. We believe that when we come together as a community, we can create more impactful, sustainable solutions,” Melanie shared.

Looking Forward

United Way of Weld County remains steadfast in its mission, and with over eight decades of

experience under its belt, the organization is well-equipped to face future challenges. As it moves forward, it will continue to harness the power of collective effort to drive change and improve lives in Weld County.

“United Way is, and will continue to be, a unifying force in our community,” Melanie concluded. “We are committed to creating a better Weld County, and together with our community, we believe we can make that vision a reality.”

TERI SEGELKE / J&T FEEDS

A PASSIONATE FORCE IN PET NUTRITION AND FEMALE ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Teri Segelke, the owner of J & T Feeds in Greeley, has been a steadfast advocate for pet nutrition and a trailblazing female entrepreneur for over 21 years. Her unwavering passion for animals has been behind her journey from working in a larger retail setting to owning and operating a flourishing pet store that has garnered numerous accolades, including the ‘Best of Greeley’ award in the Pet Store Category every year from 2017 to 2022.

Segelke’s love for animals fueled her ambition to open her own store after her previous place of employment closed. Starting out in 2002 in an 1,800-square-foot building, she has since expanded her business to a much larger and better location. The seasoned team at J & T Feeds has many years of expertise in pet nutrition and has been instrumental in addressing issues, such as obesity, food sensitivities, and geriatric needs. Despite encountering challenges as a woman in a male-dominated field, Segelke persevered and pushed forward, propelled by her determination and a strong support system. One instance she recalls is when a male banker suggested that she open a clothing store instead of pursuing her dream of owning a pet store. Instead of being deterred, Segelke used this remark as motivation to prove her worth and achieve her goals. Today, she is a successful business owner, standing as a testament to the power of resilience in the face of adversity.

As a Weld County resident for over 30 years, Segelke has formed a deep connection with the community, which has provided unwavering support for her business. This support has allowed J & T Feeds to flourish even in the face of the challenges and growing pains that many businesses endure. Segelke is grateful for support from the community, stating, “Growth is sometimes very challenging, but with the support of our local community, we are thriving.”

When not working, Segelke enjoys gardening, as well as stream fishing on the Poudre River. She also takes immense pride in her two sons, whom she considers her greatest

accomplishments. Segelke acknowledges the invaluable role her family and her team have played in the success of her business, saying, “Without my family and my team, we would not be where we are today.”

Segelke has some sage words of advice for young women looking to pursue their chosen career field: “Don’t ever give up on that dream. Some dreams change, as mine did. Find the support team you deserve and a banker that knows your worth.” Her determination and resilience have not only earned her numerous awards and accolades but have also led to her being recognized as an Outstanding Woman of Weld County in 2016 and a Colorado Women of Influence Honoree in 2015.

As Teri Segelke continues her journey with J & T Feeds, she stands as an inspiring example of what can be achieved when passion, hard work, and a supportive community come together. Her commitment to providing top-notch pet nutrition and her unwavering resilience in overcoming the obstacles she has faced as a female entrepreneur make her a shining role model for young women and aspiring business owners alike.

In an age where female entrepreneurs continue to break barriers and shatter stereotypes, Teri Segelke has emerged as a force in the world of pet care and business. Her dedication to J & T Feeds and the Weld County community showcases the power of passion, hard work, and a supportive network in achieving success. Segelke’s accomplishments extend beyond her business achievements. By fostering a loyal customer base and maintaining minimal

turnover among her team, she has created a tight-knit community around J & T Feeds that spans both her employees and clients. This sense of community is a testament to Segelke’s leadership and ability to bring people together for a common goal — ensuring the health and happiness of pets.

J & T Feeds’ commitment to excellence is evident not only in the numerous accolades and awards it has received but also in the day-to-day operations of the store. From the knowledgeable staff to the wide range of products offered, every aspect of the business is designed to cater to the diverse needs of pet owners and their beloved companions.

As the business continues to grow and evolve, Teri Segelke remains at the helm, guiding J & T Feeds with unwavering dedication and a clear vision. Aspiring entrepreneurs, pet lovers, and members of the community can look to her story as a source of inspiration and motivation.

Teri Segelke’s journey with J & T Feeds is a shining example of the power of passion, determination, and a supportive community in achieving success. Her accomplishments in the field of pet care and as a female entrepreneur serve as an inspiration for young women and aspiring business owners. As she continues to lead J & T Feeds and serve the Weld County community, her legacy will undoubtedly be one of resilience, innovation, and a deep love for animals.

A CENTURY-OLD LEGACY OF TAILORED FINANCIAL SERVICES

WELD COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION

MORE THAN EIGHT DECADES OF “PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE”.

In the heart of Greeley, stands an institution that embodies the spirit of community and cooperation. Weld Community Credit Union (WCCU), member-owned and -operated since 1936, isn’t just a financial service provider — it’s an integral part of Weld County’s social fabric.

The Credit Union Difference

A credit union is similar to a bank, offering credit and debit cards, checking and savings accounts, CDs, and various types of loans. However, credit unions are owned by their members allowing them to enjoy better rates and lower fees. “If you live or work in Weld County, you can be a member/ owner too!” WCCU proudly announces.

WCCU is a single site credit union with access to over 30,000 ATMs fee-free throughout the United States. They believe in the power of local — shopping local, borrowing local, and banking local.

People Helping People

More than just a catchy slogan, “People Helping People” forms the very basis of WCCU’s operations and ethos. This extends beyond excellent customer service and into impactful community engagement. The credit union donates $10 for every new member and every new loan to the Weld Food Bank and Guadalupe Community Center, and the staff also supports fundraising initiatives for local nonprofits; WCCU exemplifies the spirit of social responsibility.

“Employees get involved by paying to wear jeans for two weeks, and then they give that money to a local non-profit, which is a testament to their dedication to making a difference on a personal level.”

One standout initiative is the credit union’s commitment to education. To date, WCCU has given over $160,000 back to Weld County classroom teachers in the form of mini-grants. These funds have been invested in class projects, libraries, educational manipulatives, musical instruments, and other educational needs.

Competitive Advantages: Real People, Real Service

While WCCU is known for offering some of the best loan rates throughout Colorado, their competitive advantage extends beyond favorable financial metrics. “We have real people that

answer the phone during business hours. We have real people greet you and help you with your accounts and loans. They can talk to the same person that granted the loan. We build relationships,” they explain.

This people-centered approach to banking reflects WCCU’s mission to listen to each member’s story and tailor their services to individual needs. This high level of personalized service results in a banking experience that fosters trust, understanding, and strong relationships.

The Charm of Greeley Being situated in Greeley is a source of pride for

the WCCU team. The area is home to a diverse business community and an excellent school system, both public and charter, which further strengthens the community. WCCU staff are part of the friendly, down-to-earth people of Greeley, along with the sense of community and mutual support that they embody.

For over eight decades, Weld Community Credit Union has served the Greeley community with dedication and a strong commitment to “People Helping People.” They’ve merged their member-focused financial services with robust community involvement, positioning themselves not as a credit union, but as an integral partner in the community.

In the end, Weld Community Credit Union is more than a financial institution—it’s a family of real people providing real services, ever ready to listen to each member’s story. This unique blend of financial services and community engagement creates a banking experience that goes far beyond transactional relationships. With WCCU, members get more than just a credit union—they receive a steadfast partner in their financial journey and in the broader Greeley community.
