2022 GREELEY ARTS PICNIC

Add tour of Tointon Gallery and 8th St. Art Festival to list of to dos

As the city of Greeley, vendors and artists from around the U.S. get ready to descend on Lincoln Park for the annual Arts Picnic, taking place the weekend of July 30-31, the Tointon Gallery and folks from Mariposa Plants and Flowers are busy prepping for two events that festival goers will not want to miss — the Arts Picnic Fine Art Exhibit and the 8th St. Art Festival.

Up until COVID shut the gallery down during 2020 and 2021, the city hosted a call for community art that would be featured in an exhibit in conjunction with the annual Arts Picnic, Kim Snyder, Public Art coordinator explained. Adults from the community are allowed to submit one piece of art while youth can submit as many pieces as they like.

Pieces submitted include a variety of wall and 3-D art such as photographs, paintings, sculptures, ceramics, drawings and other types of art mediums.

“This is the one time of year that it is truly a community exhibit. So once a year, we let anyone in Weld County submit one piece of artwork,” Snyder said “We are always trying to get student art, so we don’t limit the number of pieces students can submit. It’s hard to get that in the summer time because they aren’t connected to school. But we have some returning student artists this year.”

Jennifer Finch, a pho-

tographer and first-time Tointon Gallery exhibitor, will have one of her pieces displayed in the exhibit.

“I saw it on Facebook

and I thought maybe I would throw in one of my things,” Finch said, laughing “I’ve always loved the Arts Picnic and I’ve been

doing photography for my whole life, so I thought this was a unique opportunity to do something with the community.

“I think it’s a great thing that they open it up for the community to participate in because it is such a neat event.”

While Snyder and Stan Scott, Senior Public Technician of the gallery, are prepared to display 100 pieces, the most the gallery typically gets is around 70 pieces.

“We’ve never had to turn anyone away. I think the biggest year we had was 95 pieces,” Snyder said. “It’s a lot in that little space.”

In addition to having their pieces displayed in the gallery, artists are eligi-

ble to receive the city’s “purchase award” that will allow their work to become part of the Greeley Public Art Program’s permanent collection.

“We will have two or three pieces that we choose and pay for and put into the city’s permanent art collection to hang in offices and lobbies,” Snyder said “So every year we buy a few new pieces for the city collection.”

The gallery will host an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday, July 29 for people that want to get an early glimpse of the exhibit. Attendees will be treated to light refreshments as well as the opportunity to visit with some of the artists.

“One of the things that’s nice about the show is that it really displays the community’s dynamic and creative community artwork,” Scott commented. “My goal is to make everybody’s piece look good and what the viewers experience is going to be. So when you walk in, there will be a theme of cohesiveness.”

The exhibit is scheduled to run through Saturday, Sept. 3.

Admission into the gallery is free and all ages are welcome to attend the exhibit.

“We are bringing down all the barriers to entry and showcasing a lot of different looks, styles and media,” Scott said. “The more inclusive, the better the show.”

The Tointon Gallery is located at 651 10th Ave. in the first floor lobby of the Greeley Recreation Center

While Scott is busy placing pieces on display in the gallery, the owner and staff at Mariposa Plants and Flowers, 801 8th St., Unit 110 in downtown Greeley are busy organizing the first 8th St. Art Festival.

“We just wanted to bring some business down to 8th Street and to encourage local artists and artisans to be part of this big community event that didn’t get chosen to be part of the Arts Picnic,” Mariposa

owner Danielle DeVore said “We always want to encourage local artists and artisans to be more a part of our store, more a part of downtown and more a part of Greeley, period.”

The art festival will take place from 5-7 p.m. Friday, July 29 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m Saturday, July 30 in the 8th Street Plaza and features a variety of local and regional artists and their work.

“The word has just spread about the art festival,” Bailee Campbell said. “There’s a very diverse set of skills participating in the festival. We have printmakers, crocheters, a band, everything like that.”

Artists and vendors participating in the festival will be set up on the sidewalks alongside the plaza.

Some of the artists set to participate in the festival include:

•Daspetey

•Envisoin Artstore

•Raven & Rabbit Studio

•Kari Not Sorry

•Babu Tatu

•The Lavender Archive

The Ginger Cat will also be one of the artists displaying work at the festival. The Ginger Cat is a needle crafting shop located at 1335 8th Ave. in Greeley. In addition to offering classes on knitting, crochet and other needle and thread crafts, the shop offers a space where crafters of all kinds can come and gather to socialize, work on projects and share their knowledge and skills with

others.

“I dropped into Mariposa one day because I don’t know too much about the downtown neighbors, and I got to visiting and they told me about the art festival,” owner Lesli Anderson explained. “We want people to know we are just down the street here, so this is a great way for us to do that. We will have a few products for sale, but mostly it will be about what we have to offer in classes and other things.”

Along with art, crafts and supplies, the festival will have live music from the Eastside Blue Band.

“We are hopeful to catch the crowd at the Arts Picnic,” DeVore said. “It would be great to extend it to both plazas in the future. I know that there are artists that want to participate in the Arts Picnic, but may not have the amount of product needed or missed the deadline to apply.”

There is no cost to attend the 8th St. Festival and all ages are welcome

Spots are still open for artists, artisans and vendors to be part of the 8th St. Festival and people interested can contact Mariposa Plants and Flowers at (970) 356-1684.

LITTLE THEATRE OF THE ROCKIES

Get ready for some hip-jiving music in ‘All Shook Up’

tmarkard@greeleytribune.com

The University of Northern Colorado is known for having spectacular theatrical, dance and musical programs that not only offer UNC students the opportunity to engage and enjoy the arts, but the surrounding community.

One of the gems of the UNC College of Performing and Visual Arts is its Little Theatre of the Rockies.

The theatre, co-founded by Helen Langworthy in 1934, is the oldest profes-

sional summer stock theater west of the Mississippi River. The theatre is owned and operated by UNC’s School of Theatre Arts and Dance.

Funding for the theater and productions comes from a combination of state funding, tickets sales and donations.

“It’s quite amazing and the theater has a rich, rich history,” Artistic Director Megan Van De Hey explained. “I did my very first show at LTR when I was 13, and it was that show that basically introduced me to

the world of theater and what I was going to do for the rests of my life.”

Some of the theatre’s past performers include Nick Nolte, Victoria Matlock, Mary Jo Catlett, Cameron Stevens and David Richards.

In past years, the theatre hosted five productions during the summer period. However, with COVID shutting down shows in 2020 and 2021, directors have scaled back the offering to three shows per season.

“It is a two-and-a-half

week rehearsal process. The show goes up, it comes down and they immediately move on to the next,”

Van De Hey explained “So, it’s pretty intense.”

For its 2022 season, Van De Hey and Associate Artistic Director Marena Kleinpeter chose a lineup of “Clue,” “The Revolutionists” and “All Shook Up.”

“We kind of tied it around all three shows being about people pushing the limits and testing the waters and basically challenging the norm,” Van De Hey said.

The cast and crew in the summer series are composed of current and/or former UNC students as well as actors and actresses of all ages from the com-

munity and across the U.S. For many members of the group, their participation in the summer series is their first professional gig

“It’s a great in-between step between the professional world and school,” added Gavin Meyer, director of “All Shook Up and UNC grad. “You can dip your toe into the professional waters and sort of get a sense of how it feels to put up a show in a very quick amount of time. It also allows you to take what you learned in school and put it into practice in the summer.”

The theatre’s last show of the season, “All Shook Up,” opens at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 28 and runs through Sunday, July 31

The musical is loosely based off of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” with a taste of “Footloose.” It’s the 1950s and Chad, who recently was released from jail and makes his way to a small Midwestern town for a fresh start.

As the young man gets settled in town, he comes into contact with several different residents, who all are changed in some way after meeting the hip-swiv-

eling, guitar-playing young man. Audience members of all ages will enjoy the music which includes some of Elvis Presley’s biggest hits such as “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock” and “Don’t Be Cruel.”

The cast of the production is comprised of:

•Alyssa Peters — Sylvia

•Anders Arneson — Sheriff Earl

•Sean Johnson — Jim Haller

“All Shook Up” is directed by Gavin Mayer with musical direction by Victor Walters. Christopher PageSanders choreographed the production. The musical is rated PG for some adult themes.

The theater is hosting

the last day of it production of “The Revolutionists” at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Norton Theatre at Gray Hall, 1828 10th Ave.

The girl-powered comedy is set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror and follows four strong women — Olympe de Gouges, Charlotte Corday, Marie Antoinette and Marianne Angelle — as they all come together to tell their stories.

Jada Dixon directs the production and the show is rated PG-13 for language and adult themes.

Once the season wraps up, Van De Hey, Kleinpeter and the cast and crew from all productions will return to their homes, full-time jobs and pursuing other theater productions…until it is time to start planning for the 2023 season

“It’s really cool to be back on campus and just think of the 30 year relationship I’ve had in some way, shape or form with this college and the university,” Meyer said. “So, it’s very surreal, but very cool to be back working with the students in this capacity.”

Tickets are $29 for adults, $27 for seniors age 65 and older, $27 for faculty and staff and $23 for students.

Loveland’s Black Steer an icon

And plans to keep it that way

When a thing is called “iconic,” what people really mean is that the thing represents an image, concept or idea which carries with it symbolic significance so deeply attached to it, the tag isn’t easily shaken off.

That thing — when talking about the Black Steer Restaurant in downtown Loveland — is in part perfectly grilled, juicy steaks. But being an icon is so much more than simply what’s on the plate.

Iconic restaurants have a place above the others because they hold up an ideal of how a food should be prepared and served in an environment that’s eminently memorable.

The Black Steer captures an idealized portrait of the western lifestyle. It’s done so since its founding in 1966 by local painter and sculptor, Lee Stark.

Originally the ambulance garage for the Loveland hospital one door to the south, Stark bought the building and planned to turn it into an art gallery with a restaurant, Janice Eslan said. She and her husband, Hamid, bought the business from Stark in 1992

Stark incorporated alcoves to showcase westernthemed art and increased the building’s size, extending it to the parking lot on the east side and installing two bars.

The bar in the back of the building achieved its own unique prominence, Eslan noted, including having its own address and

phone listing Called The Rear of the Steer, she said it’s also where “the alcohol flowed!”

Those were the days when promoting alcohol was a hot ticket. Stark gave nurses from the hospital free drink tickets; he also doled them out to service-

men in Denver

“People were literally hanging from the light fixtures,” Eslan recalls people telling her, who says many say they met their spouses at the Black Steer. “If only walls could talk. It was quite the wild place.”

After the Eslans pur-

chased the restaurant, they lightened the dark interior, but retained the art alcoves and quaint western theme, including rustic reclaimed wood paneling, wrought iron lighting and plenty of horse shoe decor.

A meal at the Black Steer is akin to dining in a fine art

gallery — you’ll want to meander to absorb the original artwork on display. The Eslans continue to acquire their own western art to add to the collection and also highlight local artists.

changed since the days when Stark was the owner

“We cannot over-serve, there are stiff penalties and we send our employees to class on the correct propriety of serving drinks. We took out the middle bar and make food the restaurant’s primary focus,” she said.

The kitchen is a scratch kitchen preparing the same recipes Stark’s cousin and his wife gathered from their travels in Europe and around the United States more than 50 years ago. Although Eslan said there have been modern additions like mahi mahi, ahi tuna and T-bone steaks, the restaurant works to maintain the originality of what it serves.

That includes Chex mix on the salads — yes, the cereal that has been the life of the party (mix) since its invention in 1952

“The Chex is one of the things we’re famous for. Our kids laughed when they saw it after we’d bought the restaurant,” she recalled, noting that they were college kids at the time. “But it was a signature. It seems funny now, but it’s good.”

The Black Steer’s meat is hand cut in house from large sides of beef. After trimming, it’s aged in meat lockers on site and there are no additives or tenderizers. Cuts include filets, Tbones, a New York strip, ribeyes and sirloins. Signature selections are a twoand-a-half inch thick steak sandwich and the pepper steak.

“We wrap the steaks in the seasoning and then put them on a 500-degree grill,” Eslan said.

French fries are cut by hand and peanut butter pies are baked daily.

Eslan and her husband

are also proud of their philanthropic program. The Community Kitchen of Loveland was conceived in the Rear of the Steer and has operated as the city’s soup kitchen since 1994.

The couple invited federal government employees for free meals during government shutdown periods, and for 16 years closed on Thanksgiving to serve dinner to those without a place or means to cook the holiday meal.

The Eslans don’t plan on selling the restaurant recently their grandson told them he wants to take it over someday.

That plan ties into the generational ribbon running through the years of the business.

“People tell us they were here to celebrate their high school graduation or wedding and they come back. We also have employees who are third generation,” Eslan said, like their current manager, Amber Kaiser, whose mother worked there as a waitress, her uncle was a cook, her daughter has waitressed and her son is bussing tables.

Assistant manager Naomi Arvadi has been with the restaurant for years, as well.

It’s the kind of place where salads and sides are included with your meal and where the appetizers range from hearty classics like jalapeño poppers to more trendy fried forest mushrooms or seared ahi tuna with Creole aioli. It’s the kind of place where — if you’re lucky — the friendly waitress will call you, “Honey,” when she asks for your drink order.

Homey and comfortable, the food is reliable and straightforward. In a sense, that encompasses the western outlook in a nutshell.

And the Chex mix? Well, that’s the iconic icing on the … salad.
