Burdick earns disc golf scholarship at Liberty U

Estes Park High School senior Jonah Burdick signed a letter of intent on May 9 to continue his athletic and academic careers at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia this fall where he will be competing for a top spot on the Flames’ Disc Golfing team on scholarship.

EPHS does not have a

Disc Golf team but Burdick says he just started playing with friend and baseball teammate Tre Swanlund a few years ago, and really started to get into it when he started going to tournaments and playing in events in the Denver area.

“I kind of played in some tournaments and played with one of my youth pastors, Garrick Mann. He got me really involved in the tournament scene. I went

to the 2021 Junior Disc Golf World Championships in Emporia, Kansas, and that put me on Liberty’s radar,” Burdick said. “The coach and I emailed quite a bit, I went on a couple of college visits and they offered to have me come play at the university.”

This is Barron’s fifth year working in the district and she says she knows what a dedicated and giving group of people she is working with.

“I believe the foundation of a strong, caring school community are the relationships within it. I can wholeheartedly say that our staff is committed to building genuinely thoughtful and respectful relationships with students and each other so that we can do the work of providing great educational opportunities for each one of our remarkable students,” Barron said. “I can also say this with certainty because I have a daughter who recently graduated

from EPHS and another daughter who is a freshman this year.”

Her three months of serving as co-principal have given her perspective on her role and the challenges she faces.

“I’ve seen the areas where we as a high school are excelling, and the challenges that we must continue tackling as a collective group – teachers, parents, administrators, board members and the overall community,” said Barron.

“The youth of Estes Park deserve it.”

One of the recent challenges that educators across the world have been struggling with are the learning issues caused by the pandemic.

“We have faced consequences such as decreased attendance due to symptoms, sickness and quarantine mandates, learning gaps and social emotional

wellness needs that have been exacerbated in the past 22 months. Students have been through a lot since March, 2020, just as we all have,” Barron said.

“We need to honor that these difficulties are real and help everyone move forward into better times.

We have made great strides and feel proud of the work we’ve done to remain in-person and as safe as possible. We will continue to keep this as our focus.”

Barron holds licensure as a Director of Special Education and received a Masters Degree in Special Education from the University of Missouri, Kansas City in 1997. Additionally, she holds her Principal Licensure through the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, and also holds a Building Level Leadership Licensure (Principal) in both Kansas

and Missouri.

“She is an amazing leader and has done wonderful work with the team and students there,” Rosenkrance said. “This move is extremely important and will keep a consistent environment moving forward for our staff and students, and the district truly believes that Mary is the right person for the job.”

Locally, Barron has served as the Education Director for Reflections for Youth, the Secondary Coordinator-Exceptional Student Services for Thompson School District, the Assistant Principal at Turner Middle School, all of which were in Loveland.

She was also the Special Education Administrator for Kansas City Public Schools in Kansas City.

“I am proud to work for EPSD and the students and families of this awesome town,” said Barron.

Kevin Miles will continue in his position as the Athletics Director and Assistant Principal.

CTE students auction off projects

Estes Park High School students enrolled in the Career and Technical Education’s Construction Geometry class have been putting what they have learned this year to good use building all sorts of creative pieces that were auction of at the End of the Year Showcase in mid-May. “The CTE program is doing a set of final projects in support of our Construction Geometry class, which is a math class students can take to learn geometry concepts like ratios, dilations, distance and midpoint, slope, and trigonometry – and apply them to building large projects like sheds, flights of stairs, custom painted cornhole sets, children’s playhouses, a pontoon boat, adirondack chairs, and a gazebo” said EPHS Science and Math Teacher Sarah Schmidt.

One of the projects being built is a skateboard minipipe which has the same design as a traditional halfpipe but on a smaller scale.

The CTE program is headed by Director Maren Bosley, who aims to connect EPHS students with local job opportunities, internships, and other ways to expose them to what their futures could look like after high school or post-secondary training.

“The CTE program has been working for years to more closely connect the school to the Estes Park community at large,” said Schmidt. “This event was be a big step for us.”

Father to Collin and Ryland and husband to Holly, Jason coached the EPHS Boys Basketball team and, by all accounts, was a great role model for his players.

Playing at the collegiate level is something Collin and his dad always talked about and worked towards.

On Monday, Collin made that dream a reality and he knows his dad is proud.

“He was really supporting me and trying to help me get to where I want to be and I feel like he would be pretty proud of what I’ve accomplished,” said Reetz who earned both an academic and athletic scholarship from Concor-

dia. “This is kind of like completing a dream for all of us.”

“I’m very proud,” added Holly.

Reetz’s coach for the last two seasons has been Aaron Carlson. The pair led the Bobcats to the state tournament in the spring of 2021 and won the first home playoff game in Estes Park since 2003.

“Very proud of Collin,” said Carlson. “As the community knows, he is one of the best players that have ever come through EPHS and he was a starter even as a freshman for a few games.”

His coach says what makes Collin not only a

great quarterback, but a great leader, is his competitive spirit and determination.

“He’s just a competitor, that’s the best thing about his game,” Carlson said.

“He’s got a lot of skill but he’s just a complete competitor … wants to win … wants to lift his team up … wants to do all he can to make that happen and I’m sure at the next level he’s going to bring that competitive spirit to the team and be very successful.”

According to MaxPreps.com, which tracks high school sports statistics entered by coaches and school officials, Reetz

has played in 32 games for the Bobcats. In those games he has completed 508 of his 962 pass attempts (52.8 percent) for 6,526 yards and 55 touchdowns.

He has averaged 204 passing yards per game for his career and last season he threw a career-long 99yard touchdown pass.

While his statistics are incredibly impressive for a high school quarterback, the college level will undoubtedly bring stiffer competition. Carlson believes Reetz is up to the task.

“It’s competitive at that level,” said Carlson. “He’s got a challenge ahead of

him but I am sure he will rise to that challenge and we’ll be hearing some great stories about him from Concordia.”

The Concordia Bulldogs play in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) which differs from the more widely known National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Founded in 1937, the NAIA is a governing body of small athletics programs that are dedicated to character-driven intercollegiate athletics. While there are no full-ride athletic scholarships in the NAIA, the

organization’s more than 77,000 student-athletes have the opportunity to earn over $800 million in partial scholarships, and compete for a chance to win national championships in 27 different sports.

Last season, the Bulldogs started a bleak 1-3 before righting the ship and finishing the season on a six-game win streak for a final record of 7-3.

Reetz will conclude his athletic career as a Bobcat this spring on the baseball diamond before joining the Bulldogs and working to help them improve on their 7-3 record and possibly earn a trip to the NAIA Football Championships.

Reetz Foundation Games

Bobcats played three games in four nights

Mid-December 2021 was a busy time for the Estes Park Boys Basketball team, who played three games in the span of four days. After a loss to open the week on Tuesday (Dec. 16), the team bounced back in a big way to win on Thursday, and bring home a big win at the first annual Jason Reetz Foundation Games fundraiser on Friday.

The Bobcats (4-3) began the busy week before Christmas break with a hard-fought home game against Denver West (7-1).

Senior Brysen Long led Estes Park in scoring with 13 points, followed by fellow senior Zeke Darnell with eight, but the rest of the squad only managed a total of 16 points and the Bobcats fell, 43-37.

It was a great effort on defense for Estes Park who held a Denver West team averaging 59 points to just 43. Senior Collin Reetz was a beast on the boards, snagging five offensive and four defensive rebounds.

“This was a hard fought game against a tough team.

We played with a lot of energy and intensity, unfortunately we just couldn’t get anything to fall on the offensive end,” said head coach Nik Buchman. “I was proud of the way the guys battled, as we had a chance to make it a two point game with ten seconds left but couldn’t get the ball to drop. It was a great learning experience for this team, and I really think that they’re starting to realize the potential they have. We have a talented team, I think the biggest thing is just getting them to understand that they are capable of beating these higher level opponents.”

under nine point games.

“Once we start learning how to finish out these close games, we’ll be a dangerous team,” Buchman said.

Like increasingly popular television soccer coach Ted Lasso would say, “Let’s all be goldfish.” For those unfamiliar, goldfish have an incredibly short memory.

When an athlete thinks like a goldfish, it allows them to forget mistakes and/or losses and move on to the next game without the weight of the last game weighing on the team.

And that is what the Bobcats did when they went on the road to Wiggins to face the Tigers (1-4) on Thursday (Dec. 16).

“This was a great team win. Any time you have to make the two hour plus long bus ride, your first concern is if the team will be ready to play after sitting around for so long,” Buchman said. “I think that definitely affected us, as we got down 12-1 to start off the game.”

Estes Park came back

strong to lead 23-21 at halftime and never looked back, finishing with a 46-41 victory.

“After the slow start, we found our energy and ended up going on a 36-18 run that brought us into the fourth quarter with a seven point lead,” Buchman said.

“We were able to close out the game with some big stops on the defensive end that allowed us to get out of there with a win.”

This time, Long and Darnell tied for the team high in points with 11 each with Reetz right behind them with nine points, sinking three of his four free throw attempts.

“Once again, we weren’t able to get as many shots to fall as we would like, but this team is gritty on defense and that allows us to stay in these games when things aren’t going right offensively,” Buchman said. “Brysen , Collin , and Zeke made some big plays on both the offensive and defensive end when we needed them. After Tuesday’s close loss, this was an

important turn-around game that showed these guys that they can finish these close games out on top.”

The following night was an emotional one at Estes Park High School (EPHS) as the team hosted the first annual Jason Reetz Foundation Games fundraiser.

“This was a great way to celebrate the life of our former coach Jason Reetz, a great father, husband, coach and member of the Estes Park community,” said Buchman. “Anyone that knew Jason knows that he cared so much about these boys and dedicated so much of his life to helping them as better basketball players and young men.”

A handful of amazing volunteers put together a great chili supper and raffle, the proceeds of which are going to be put towards two scholarships in Jason’s name for a boy and girl student at EPHS. “The game itself was a lot of fun, and you could feel the energy in the gym,”

said Buchman. “I knew coming in it was going to be an emotional night, especially for Collin and Ryland . We wanted them to know from the beginning that this night was for them and that we were all going to go out there and fight for them.”
