REI is shining its two golds in the Best Sporting Goods Store and Best Outdoor Recreation Store categories. That’s no surprise, really, because REI will outfit you for camping or climbing, for biking or snowboarding, for cycling or skiing. With a full service bike shop, outdoor equipment rentals, even a community center, it’s hard to pin down one’s favorite thing about REI. “Our staff have fun, they’re passionate about what they do, and hopefully that comes through to the customer,” says asst. manager Chris Dangerfield. A trip to REI for ski boots may result in a backpacking class, booking a rafting trip, or just great conversation with fellow outdoors enthusiasts. REI is of course a co-op that has been around since 1938, but how does it fit with the myriad outdoorsy stores in our area? “There are a lot of great players in the local outdoors scene, and plenty of places to find what you need, “Dangerfield reasons. “Our stance is to offer a very personal approach to customer service, to connect at a community level. Our outreach coordinator does a great job of setting up events that foster inclusiveness.” Impressed?
