Bring your kite, your lawn chairs, your picnic blanket, and have a great time! That is what Lori Kempter, executive director of Aspire 3D, said about their first signature event, the Kite Festival.

When Kempter and her staff were deciding on a signature event for their nonprofit, they wanted to make sure there was an ability for their residents to participate. That meant it should be very inexpensive and an event that multiple generations could enjoy.

The event was planned for May of last year but of course, was canceled because of COVID. It will be in May again in the future.

After a crazy 15 months of masks and social distancing she said the community is excited to come back together for events again.

Kempter’s marketing director started looking for sponsors and was surprised by the excited response. So many doors were closed during COVID-19. The event has 29 sponsors, including its title sponsors, Nanci Garnand and Loveland Ford.

The Kite Festival is slated for 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 22.

“They have been great and incredibly supportive of the event,” Kempter said.

In its third year, Aspire 3D is a nonprofit organization that works with the Loveland Housing Authority to make a variety of services available to residents in low-income housing in Loveland.

The Kite Festival will include food trucks, kite flying experts, a kite-making booth, bands, and educational resources about what Aspire 3D offers its community.

“We focus on removing barriers to engage with resources in Loveland,” Kempter said.

Families are invited to bring kites. However, no worries if you don’t. The first 300 children to the event will receive a free kite and there will be a kite vendor on-site as well.

Kempter hopes to achieve two goals through this event.

The first goal is to spread awareness about the services Aspire 3D provides and to help people understand the need in the community for services. The second goal is to raise money to continue to help people be self-sufficient.

Aspire 3D seeks to help their populations become more self-sufficient and get access to the services they need such as having basic needs met, mental health, helping young people achieve literacy, veteran services, transportation and more.

“We are giving the community an opportunity to engage and give back to their neighbors that maybe need a little bit of extra help right now,” Kempter said.

Aspire 3D doesn’t create new programming but they put their residents in contact with relevant organizations in the community like the Boys and Girls Club, House of Neighborly Service, Meals on Wheels, Matthew’s House, etc.

There will not be a fee to attend the Kite Festival, but there will be opportunities at the event to make a donation.

“Loveland and Colorado as a whole build this strong network around their neighbors and really lifts them up, and this is another opportunity to do so,” she said.

Volunteers are needed to help set up and tear down, run the kite building station, help out at the hydration station, help with safety, or to be a point of contact for questions at the event. The organization works with previously homeless veterans to end their chronic homelessness, address mental health issues, work on their trauma and get them back in the workforce.

The Loveland Housing Authority has built clubhouses in many of their low income communities that have kitchens, community spaces and classrooms. Partners are invited to come in and present classrooms, work with youth or provide mental health services on site.

In-person fundraising is back in 2021

One of the biggest parties of the year – and a tremendously important fundraiser for the American Cancer Society – returns for full, in-person action in mid-September.

benefits cancer research and treatment efforts in Northern Colorado and across the U.S. Over its 25-year history, the event has brought in more than $8 million, and event chair Jean Schober Morrell said volunteers and donors have already helped the event get half way to its $1 million fundraising target.

“Our theme for this year is Back in the Saddle, Again … people are anxious to get back to an in-person event again, for an elegant evening under the tent,” she said. “But even though we had to do it virtually in 2020, it still went amazingly well – we raised $465,000, despite having to put together a virtual event in just a short time. We ended up being the 16th largest fundraiser for ACS in the country that year.”

This year, COVID-19 restrictions lifted, the Cattle Baron’s Ball will feature a full sit-down, white-table-cloth dinner, silent and live auction events and an intimate concert with Country Songwriter of the Year winning musician Phil Vassar and his band. Tickets are limited to 820, and Morrell said sales have been brisk, though plenty of spots are still available.

We’ve been very fortunate to get a lot of corporate donations, and are at a half a million dollars so far, so we know we will definitely pass our $1-million goal. And even if people don’t attend in person, they can also register to bid remotely on our silent auction.”

Like most of the folks involved with the Ball and the ACS, Morrell has very personal experience with cancer. She’s a 32-year survivor of breast cancer, and has been an active volunteer with the ACS for almost 30 years. Sadly, last year, she lost her husband Pete to a very short battle with pancreatic cancer, and said that helped energize her focus for this year’s event.

“I am more determined than ever to do whatever I can to help the American Cancer Society’s mission to ‘lead the NORTHERN COLORADO LIFE 11

a previous event, something she said was entirely unplanned, but was a nice surprise to see.

“This event has so many people involved, and it’s such a big community effort, which is really heartening to see,” she said. “At our first organizing meeting this year, everyone had a cancer-related story, either a loved one or themselves. Everyone’s really committed at a very emotional level.”

In a strangely fitting tribute to her late husband, Morrell notes that a promotional video for this year’s event on the Cattle Baron’s Ball website – featuring her dressed up in her country dancing best – features an image of Pete at

Featured performer Phil Vassar is best known for his 2000 hit “Just Another Day in Paradise” and 2004’s “In a Real Love,” as well as co-writing hits for performers including Alan Jackson, Tim McGraw and Jo Dee Messina. His most recent album, Stripped Down, features a variety of unreleased songs, including one co-written with his daughter, Haley Vassar.

Morrell said she’s looking forward to Vassar’s performance, having met him while she and Pete served as the grand marshals of the Greeley Stampede in 2009.

“Typically our performer gives us something like a signed guitar, but Phil is a pianist, so we’re going to figure something out,” she said. “There’s also opportunities to bid on a private meet and greet with him.”

In addition to the concert, Morrell said donations to the live auction have so far included a $40,000 automobile purchase from Weld County Garage in Greeley, plus a voucher for oil changes. Other items include diamond earrings and the day use of a Lamborghini sports car.

“We’re still looking for silent auction donations as well, anything $50 and over. So far we have a lot of original artwork, pottery and lots of dinners at local restaurants.”

BANNER HEALTH NAMES TWO NURSE LEADERS FOR COLORADO GREELEY, Colo. – Two veteran nurse leaders will become chief nursing officers to lead the three Banner Health hospitals in northern Colorado.

Julia Gentry is the new chief nursing officer (CNO) for Banner North Colorado Medical Center (NCMC) in Greeley effective June 27. Gentry will have overall accountability for providing leadership, direction

and administration of day-to-day operations associated with direct patient care activities and clinical education and development. This includes continuous improvement of nursing services and staff to meet the needs and expectations of patients at the hospital.

Gentry has been with Banner since 2000 and working in nursing leadership roles since 2013. Most recently, she stepped in as interim CNO and interim nursing director for women, infants and pediatrics.

Before that, she served in various roles such as inpatient services nursing director for Banner’s three northern Colorado hospitals, and at Banner NCMC she was nursing director of inpatient services, nursing director of critical care services and senior nurse manager of the observation unit.

Gentry earned bachelor of arts degree in psychology and a bachelor of science degree om nursing from the University of Northern Colorado.

She also holds an MBA and a master of science in

Cowan has worked in many areas of nursing including critical care, emergency, wound care, vascular access and inpatient rehabilitation units. Summer is all about fun, but that fun also can be good for the mind and body through things like races and outdoor fitness classes—and Loveland has plenty of options for both.

The Valley 5000 and the Last Call Triathlon offer beginning to challenging courses in one-day races, while the One Sweet Summer event series features fitness classes that go all summer long.

THE LAST CALL TRIATHLON The Last Call Triathlon (breakawayathleticevents. com/last-call-triathlon) combines running, riding, swimming and paddle boarding in six different races to give athletes of all levels opportunities for friendly competition. An estimated 300 to 500 athletes are expected to attend the Sept. 26 event.

“It’s not one size fits all,” said J.B. Tobin, owner and race director of Breakaway Athletic Events, host of the triathlon and other events like marathons and trail runs. “You don’t necessarily need to do a full iron man to call yourself a triathlete. We like to do shorterdistance races that are beginner-friendly to harder-toNORTHERNCOLORADOLIFE.COM

“They can see how it all works and at the end of the morning, they’re a triathlete,” Tobin said, adding that the day concludes with a post-race meal and a beer garden provided by Loveland Aleworks.

THE VALLEY 5000 The 39th annual Valley 5000 (runsignup.com/Race/ CO/Loveland/Valley5000) is a 5K run/walk Aug. 20 at Mehaffey Park and is expected to bring out more than 350 racers. The race starts in the park and heads to U.S. 34 and Cascade Avenue and onto a recreational path before returning to the park.

“It offers a wide variety of terrain and starts in the grass and ends up on the pavement. It’s a fast course,” said Shane McWatters, co-owner of Sweetwater City Racing with his wife, Sara. “It has a good downhill run once they leave the park and head toward Cascade. It’s a nice, long descent.”

Start times for the race are staggered with a citizens’ race beginning at 6:30 p.m., an elite wave at 7:15 p.m. and a littles race for children at 7:30 p.m. It’s the longest running race in Loveland, McWatters said.

The triathlon takes place at Boyd Lake State Park at the lake and along the trails within the park, plus there’s access to camping. The options include a sprint triathlon, duathlon, aquabike and aquathlon where participants can pick among swimming, riding and running for the different races. The swim is 750 meters in a single loop around the lake; the bike ride is 10 miles along the bike paths parallel to the park road; and the run is a 5K at 3.1 miles on the pedestrian paths.

There also is a supersprint triathlon with shorter distances for each leg of the race, including a 450-meter swim, a 4.6-mile bike ride and a 2.1-mile run. A second option for the supersprint is a sprint SUP triathlon, involving the use of a stand-up paddleboard for the swim leg of the race.

Start times vary for the different options and are at 8:24 a.m., 8:45 a.m. and 8:55 a.m.

“It’s a low-pressure atmosphere. Yes, you’re racing, but you’re racing against yourself,” Tobin said. “There is no prize money. It’s really just friendly competition.”

The supersprint is ideal for beginners and youth wanting to experience their first triathlon at a smaller level, as well as elite athletes needing to test new gear or practice for their priority races, Tobin said.

“We have runners who have done ever y single one,” McWatters said.

There will be a deejay on site, Michael Waldron, aka DJ Lil’ Joe, and a food truck to add some entertainment, McWatters said.

“For us, it’s all about the community,” McWatters said. “Anybody can get out and join us. That’s what we’re all about. It’s another way for people to get out and be active and to have some fun together.”

Proceeds from the race will support House of Neighborly Service, a Loveland-based nonprofit that provides assistance for those facing poverty or a situational crisis.

“SCR is dedicated to the community of Loveland and to anyone who wants to get out, see more of our city and feel stronger and better in their bodies,” the website states. “(SCR is) dedicated to providing fun, challenging and varied opportunities for runners of all abilities, from walkers to recreational joggers to ultra-marathoners.”

ONE SWEET SUMMER

The One Sweet Summer event series (downtownloveland.org/onesweetsummer) features three weekly fitness classes in piyo and yoga during a larger event hosted by the Loveland Downtown District. The summer event, held for the second year in The Foundry Plaza in downtown Loveland, brings residents and tourists to the area for a free, family-friendly community event geared to all ages that includes live music, festivals and Kids on the Plaza with a splash area, art and other activities geared to children.

The fitness classes, free and for all ages, last one hour, and participants are asked to bring their own yoga mats.

The fitness classes originally were taught by Chilson Recreation Center instructors—they were offered last year because social distancing could be put into practice during the COVID-19 pandemic. This year due to staffing issues at Chilson, the classes are being taught by private instructors—Cindi Meyer is teaching piyo, and Maureen “Mo” Geraghty, a former Chilson instructor, is teaching yoga.

“They wanted to do something that’s kind of simple and relaxing. It’s easy for everybody to do,” Floyd-Baltzer said. “Yoga is really approachable, and it’s popular.”

An average of 30 to 50 people attend each class—the maximum is set at 50.

Going to the Dogs

Pat Healy has known plenty of champion dogs.

Healy has spent the past four decades closely involved in the competitive dog-show circuit in northern Colorado, an association that ultimately brought her to her current role as chairperson of the Greeley Kennel Club Show. Long before she came to her current position, however, Healy has played the role of organizer and presenter alike, and she knows firsthand the excitement and glory that these competitions can bring.

“I’ve owned many dogs that have won different competitions,” Healy said. “My husband and I have shown our dogs all over. We have bred over 50 homebred champions. I show most of them myself. That’s a very exciting thing – when you’re the breeder, owner and handler.”

Healy will bring those experiences to bear on Aug. 21, 22 and 23, when the Greeley Kennel Club returns to a tradition that spans more than 70 years and presents its annual signature event. The all-breed dog show, which includes specialty competitions, lure races, barn hunts, breeder showcases and vendor booths, went on hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

most significant and highly esteemed dog shows west of the Mississippi – has drawn enthusiasm from dog lovers across the country. Along with the rest of the GKC, Healy is hard at work putting the finishing touches on the planning and organization for the 2021 event, a gathering that will draw thousands of dogs – and their owners – to the Island Grove Park in Greeley from Aug. 21 to 23.

“We’ll have dogs from every state, except Alaska and Hawaii. We usually have about 2,200 to 2,300 dogs. This year we’re going to be bigger, because last year there was no dog show … This year, our grooming spots were filled in two days. We already have 190 RVs booked. I think at the pace we’re at, we’re going to be as big if not bigger as our last show,” she said. “We’ve got 25 judges coming in from as far away as Connecticut, California, Washington, Maryland, Virginia. They’re coming from East Coast, West Coast, the Midwest. Along with the dogs and their owners, they’re coming from all over.”

This year’s show will also include single-breed shows with national participants.

“We have three national specialties with us. A national specialty is a single breed that has its own show.

Some have them multiple times a year; usually once a year in a locale when all of that breed tries to get together,” Healy said. “This year, we have the Skye Terrier, the Toy Fox and the Cairn terrier as national groups.”

These figurative canine headliners will be joined by aspiring champions from across the spectrum of breeds. The show will feature separate competitions in the seven traditional categories of dog shows Working, Herding, Toy, Hound, Sporting, Non-Sporting and Terrier. The stakes in these separate competitions are high, and the competition can be fierce.

“The judge picks one to four out of their group; some groups have 30 dogs,” Healy said. “Each one of the winners of those groups – each of those seven – goes into the contest for Best in Show, and Reserve Best in Show,” she added, pointing to prizes of $1,000 and $500 for first and reserve winners.

These main events will find a complement in a wide array of activities and competitions designed to feature every facet of the dog showing world. For example, junior handlers from all specialty breed AUGUST 2021

competitions will compete for a $500 scholarship. The weekend will also feature small-scale races, barn hunts, diving competitions, breeder showcases and other events, all centered in a facility that’s won a national reputation as one of the best spots for dog shows in the West, and in the U.S. as a whole.

“Spectators are welcome,” Healy said.

“This will be a great chance to see what dog shows are all about.”

For those like Healy, who along with her husband, touts more than four decades of experience in the circuit, the show is a chance to pay tribute to the faithful companions who make the yearlong organizational process worth all of the work.

“Trying to get to that ideal of that specimen when it comes to dogs – that in itself is what’s kept me in. All of this other stuff is giving back to the dog community,” she

said. “Dogs give so much to me – their love, devotion, the whole bit. If I ever never stepped into a show ring; I still have dogs.

“Breeding that perfect dog is what we strive for,” she added. “Doing the show is just our stamp of approval.”

After a long summer, you’re probably ready. They might be ready as well.

But school can take a lot out of someone—no matter what the age. But for younger children who are still developing, this can be a make or break time. This is when they learn to establish good, life-long habits. And this is when they start building a foundation for a healthy lifestyle and a keen mind.

Most conflicts between people and bears can be traced to easily accessible human food, trash, or other attractants with strong odors as a bear’s natural drive to eat can overcome its fear of humans. When bears become too comfortable around humans, they can destroy property or even become a threat to human safety.

• When camping in bear country, the easiest way to avoid bears is to not have anything in your campsite that has a smell that will attract them.

• Stash your trash. Put all trash in bear-proof trash receptacles or bear canisters.

• Keep a clean campsite. Scrape grill grates after use and clean used dishes.

• Never bring food or anything that smells like food - which includes toiletries, sunscreen and even the clothes you wear when cooking - into your tent.

• Lock cars and RVs whenever you leave your site and at night and close windows.

What if a bear tries to enter a campsite?

Try to haze it away with loud noises such as yelling, banging pots and pans together or use your car horn or an air horn to scare the bear away. Notify CPW park staff if a bear enters a campsite. As an extra precaution, carry bear spray with you when you go camping.

• Understanding bear behaviors and your surroundings can help avoid unwanted encounters with wildlife on trails.

• Stay alert at all times. Avoid using headphones and be extra cautious at dawn and dusk.

• Keep dogs leashed at all times.

• Respect forage areas. If your usual trail runs through berry patches, oak brush or other known food sources, be extra vigilant. Make extra noise by periodically clapping or calling out to alert bears to your presence.

What if you surprise a bear on a trail?

Stay calm, stand still and speak to it in a firm tone of voice. The bear will most likely identify you and leave.

Never run from a bear. If the bear does not leave, slowly wave your arms to make yourself look bigger. Continue facing the bear, slowly back away and keep slowly moving away until the bear is out of sight. If the bear gets within 40 feet, use bear spray.

If a bear attacks, do not play dead - fight back with anything available, including trekking poles, small knives or even your bare hands.

Parking is limited so it’s best to use shuttle buses.

Nearly 100 artists participate in this event that brings about 2000 pieces of sculpture. The nationally renowned sculture show is the is the largest juried outdoor sculpture event in the United States and draws artists from all over the country, Elyce said. The event draws upwards of 20,000 people throughout the weekend. Benson Sculptor Garden is ranked as the No. 1 trip attraction in Loveland, based on TripAdvisor. This year 30 new first time participating artists will be at the event, Elyce said.

Sculpture categories include bronze, glass, wood, ceramic, mixed media, and stones. Artists can also submit various styles including stylized representational, and abstract, Elyce said.

“We have art for everybody and have different price points for everybody. A silent auction goes on all weekend and closes out Sunday afternoon,” she said.

Tickets cost $10 for adults, kids 14 and under free. Food will be available in the concession area, along with beer and wine.

Loveland-based catering company, Food for Thought will handle concessions. Coffee will be sold by Espresso People, Inc. Calls for entry start in August and run through January. Continually check the website for updated submission information.

Many galleries and have special exhibits or demonstrations, and pop-up shops, carriage rides and sidewalk art have all made an appearance.

Pastels on 5th is a great way for artists to showcase their artwork while drawing people into the downtown area, says Event Director Vicky Bryant. The event is a fundraiser for Alternatives to Violence. Artists of all levels participate and patrons can cast votes online for all their favorite artists. Voting closes September 19, at 5 p.m. And for all you art collectors, remember to visit the artist marketplace on-site where artists sell their work. “The Fall Into Blues Fest also falls on the same day as our event so we hope it draws more people to both events,” Bryant said.

So why not make a festival around that concept? Loveland Chamber of Commerce invites the community come out and celebrate the annual Corn Roast Festival—in its 125th year.

About 10,000 ears of corn will be sold over the weekend, says Mindy McCloughan, President and CEO with Loveland Chamber of Commerce.

“Moving forward in the midst of a pandemic—it’s the largest event that Loveland puts on because we have over 30,000 participants.”

Planning an event of this size requires hundreds of volunteers, said McCloughan. Watching it come to fruition is quite gratifying, given the current state of affairs.

“To pull off a two-day festival coming off of a pandemic says volumes about our community spirit,” she said.

All Loveland breweries are encouraged to participate in the much-anticipated event. “We’re excited to get back to some of these events and hope the community is excited as well. We are all about serving the community, that’s why we partner with Kiwanis and all the local breweries.” Proceeds from the event help the Kiwanis support local community programs--including school supply drives and holiday programs for kids, Pilato said. Pay $7 per beer with cash or credit card. Grimm Brothers will be pouring their signature Oktoberfest brew, “Farmer’s Daughter.” Food trucks and vendors will supply all the tasty eats—including German fare, like hot pretzels and schnitzel, mouthwatering desserts and ice cream delights.

Oktoberfest fun continues in NoCo. Greeley OktoBREWfest brings German festivities to life with its 30-year tradition. Festival goers quench their thirst with a variety of sudsy libations from up to 15 local breweries and one distillery, says Alison Hamling, director of experience with Greeley Downtown Development Authority, the nonprofit hosting the event.

Fill those steins with suds from local breweries like Brix Brew and Tap and Loveland Aleworks—beer tokens cost $6. Local artist Dan Crosier was selected for his artwork to be used on the commemorative stein. His mural is displayed at WeldWerks Brewery.

Want to learn polka, Dutch hop, or German waltz? Kick up your heels up with Volkstanzgruppe Dancers, to perform twice on Saturday – and they will offer a dance lesson to the public. The event draws up to 8000 people including Denver folks. Locally owned Fusco’s Table, serves up brats, spaetzli with gravy and strudel. Stop by Schwartz’s Krautburger Kitchen for one-of-a-kind krautbugers, while Lonesome Buck Brewery has your hot pretzels covered— because no Oktoberfest is complete until you sink those teeth into a mustardy hot pretzel.

and Roaring Fork rivers. The nomadic Ute Native Americans were the first known visitors to the mineral-rich hot springs that flow along the banks of the Colorado River in Glenwood Canyon. They called the springs Yampah, meaning Big Medicine.

The community experienced a huge tourism boost after the railroads arrived in 1887. Two railway companies were competing to be the first to arrive, and Denver & Rio Grande won by a mere week after constructing a route that blasted through the south side of Glenwood Canyon. This is the railroad that is making the Rockies to Red Rocks route possible.

Entrepreneur Isaac Cooper and silver baron Walter Devereux envisioned creating a hot springs resort for tourists in tandem with the arrival of railroads and hired renowned Austrian architect Theodore Von Rosenberg to add European flair to the bathhouse design for Glenwood Hot Springs Pool, which opened to much fanfare on July 4, 1888. Devereux, who brought electricity to town a bit earlier in 1886, went great lengths to create a “spa in the Rockies” by rerouting the Colorado River to create the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool.

For many years, tourists chose to arrive in Glenwood Springs via rail instead of other more difficult options, including the bumpy single-lane dirt road that opened in 1899 through Glenwood Canyon.

Amtrak’s viewing car, with its floor-to ceiling windows, offers breathtaking vistas from start to stop. Trip highlights between Denver and Glenwood Springs include the 6.2-mile-long Moffat Tunnel, Winter Park Resort, Fraser Canyon, Granby near Rocky Mountain National Park, Gore Canyon, and the 12.5-mile spectacular Glenwood Canyon.
