We are delighted to introduce you to our GCSE Options booklet for 2021. Our school motto, “Pro Omnibus Excellentia” – excellence in everything, extends right through all aspects of our College and we are committed to ensuring the best possible education and experiences for all of our pupils. You have almost finished your journey through Key Stage 3 and I am confident that despite the many challenges you have faced this past year, you are all working hard.

St Ronan’s College is delighted to be able to offer you a wide range of subjects at GCSE level. In St Ronan’s College you can be confident that you have access to high quality subjects which will lead to future learning, success and the world of work.

As an all ability school, we strive to create a centre of excellence in learning and teaching and make every effort to ensure first class opportunities and experiences for all of our young people across the curriculum and within pathways.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, unfortunately this year we will be unable to meet with you in person.

However, we have created and designed a Virtual Options process for you instead. Every day for two weeks, departments will post their virtual options talks on Google Classroom. We encourage all our pupils to engage in all talks to ensure they are in the best position to make informed decisions regarding subject and course choices. As always, our outstanding Careers Department are on hand for advice and guidance.

This booklet has been designed to help you make important decisions about your future. To help pupils choose their courses, assistance will be offered by subject teachers and careers teachers. A pupil can seek advice at any time, so please ask.

We make considerable efforts to ensure that pupils have the opportunity to study their preferred choice of course and subjects each year. Sometimes however, this may not be possible. If it is not possible to give you your choices, your year team and careers teacher will discuss this with you. We know it is difficult to be absolutely sure about which courses and subjects you want to study in Key Stage 4 and perhaps beyond, but please try your best. A good rule of thumb I believe is to choose subjects you enjoy, are good at and that you feel combined with your other choices will provide you with a well rounded education that keep pathways open for the future.

Vice Principal’s Welcome Dear Students and Parents, Year 10 is moving very quickly towards its completion and now is your opportunity to choose subjects that will open doors into future career paths.

You have a number of very important decisions to make in the coming weeks that require much thought and research.

Making Your Choice If you have a clear idea of the career you would like to pursue, then your choice of subjects should be guided by the requirements of that career. If you find it difficult to decide on a particular career or subject, then the following points should be considered: Consider carefully those subjects that you enjoy and in which you have demonstrated academic ability or potential.

Try to maintain a balance of subjects. In this way a broad range of future options are kept open.

Do you have a preference towards academic exam based subjects or do you prefer vocational subjects which tend to have a more practical element?

At St Ronan's College we strive to offer a wide variety of subjects to suit the needs of each individual pupil. We also offer distinct pathways suited to an individual strengths and abilities. Pupils, teachers and parents work together to ensure the best possible route is chosen for each pupil.

What is Occupational Studies?

Occupational studies is a vocational course designed to suit a practical learner. There are fourstrands of occupational studies currently available in St Ronan’s College; 

The marks for each subject in occupational studies is calculated by the following:- 60% practical, 20% knowledge checks (these are assessed verbally and written), 20% evaluations. There is no examination and the course is 100% coursework assessed.

What do they involve?

The course was initially designed as a taster for GCSE to give pupils interested in the associated career a taste of what is involved whilst earning a GCSE equivalent.

You will be expected to work independently and follow instructions in order to complete various assessments within the associated vocational area. The practical element of the course is vital as it is worth 60%.

Where will they bring me?

Some pupils have continued their studies to A level, FE college, apprenticeships or employment.

The skills developed within this course are transferrable skills such are self management, organisation, team working and communication skills, which are useful for interview preparation for future employment.

What is BTEC? (An Overview) What are they?

BTEC Firsts are designed for Level 2 learners, and are equivalent to GCSEs. BTECs offer pupils a more hands on approach to their studies and an insight into future vocations.

How you learn: BTEC students develop their knowledge and understanding by applying their learning and skills in a work-related context. BTEC First assignments offer learners the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in a real-life context. Students work on assignments in a variety of ways; some they complete on their own, and for others they work as part of a team.

GCSE Business Studies This is a new subject and not offered at KS3 but pupils will be expected to have a good level of English and Maths skills.

    

What is this subject about?

The Child Development Programme includes the study of the physical, social, intellectual and emotional development of young children from conception to the age of five years.

GCSE in Construction & The Built Environment CCEA GCSE Construction and the Built Environment This subject encourages students to develop their knowledge of the construction industry and the built environment. They then apply this knowledge in relevant and work-related contexts. They learn to interpret drawings of domestic buildings and explore the materials and sustainable methods used in domestic and commercial construction. The specification also helps students to appreciate the importance of health and safety in the construction industry.

To enhance their practical skills, students complete a craft project based on woodwork, brickwork or blockwork. They also develop their computer aided design (CAD) knowledge, understanding and skills by producing a portfolio of work.

With this qualification, students may choose to progress to our GCE Technology and Design. They could also progress to a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment or further study in a related area such as engineering, manufacturing or architecture.

Their career route may include working as a construction apprentice while they study.
